tag list: @sweaters-and-silly (lmk if you wanna be added too) ______________________________
His chest is tight as fuck. Tommy breathes through it. Head between his knees, feels his pulse uncomfortably loud and present in his neck. Lockers have emptied out mostly. His vision is swimming. He feels like throwing up.
"Kinard? Oh shit, hey."
He can hear fast footsteps, and then a warm, big hand on his shoulder. "You got it," the voice says and Tommy's brain is desperately trying to place it. His hands are shaking. "Inhale.... hold your breath, three, two, one, ....exhale. Good. Again, come on."
By the time Tommy emerges from what feels like the deepest, darkest sea and comes up for air, he's realized that the warm hand and firm voice belong to his new captain. Hen had given him a week tops. But Nash has persevered. Four weeks and counting. Tommy would've rather been found dead before ever letting Gerrard see him like this but Nash has a softness to him. His whole lets have dinner together shtick, his we're a family and we ride together pathos, his unwavering determination to make them act like a team -- Tommy's not sure he quite fits in there. Right now, though, he's glad it's Nash who found him like this and not Howie or Hen. They'd stage an intervention immediately.
Nash hands him a water bottle, sits down next to him. "Better?"
Tommy lets out a shaky breath. “Thanks cap. I, uh, I don’t know what just happened." He rubs his hand across his face. “I don’t usually get… like this.” He forces a smile. "Guess it was a couple of tough calls."
Nash eyes him, somewhat curiously. Several beats. "Everything alright at home?" Tommy shrugs. He should go home. Sleep it off. He meets Nash's steady gaze, but there's a flicker of genuine concern. Tommy can't handle it, Nash's empathy.
"Yeah. Everything's good," he lies and reaches for his bag. Nash stops him. "Not so fast. I uh -- I'd been meaning to talk to you."
Tommy blinks, confused, his hand still hovering near the strap of his bag. He’s not sure where this is going. "Uh oh," he says dryly. His pulse is still racing and only slowly returning to normal. "Am I being fired, too?" Deluca is still pissed at Nash but Tommy knows it was the right call. He's been putting in the work, though. Doing his part. It would be really shitty timing for Nash to let him go as well.
Nash’s gaze sharpens for a moment, like he’s sizing Tommy up, and then he exhales softly. “No, you’re not getting fired.” He pauses, like he’s choosing his words carefully. Tommy's shoulders relax. "But?" he asks.
"But..." Nash continues, "I've been wondering if maybe you're not exactly who you're supposed to be."
"That so?" Tommy asks, aiming for casual. Nash doesn't know, does he? Fuck. He wonders sometimes if it's all over his face. Tommy Kinard thinks about kissing boys. Tommy Kinard is a queer. Don't ask, don't tell. But look at him, he tries so hard to be a big guy but he'd take it lying down, wouldn't he? Fuck. He needs to get his dad's voice out of his head. It's funny, the way he is still such a fuck up. How he tried to make it work so hard and how he still failed. He would've given everything to be happy with Abby.
He juts his chin forward. Nash looks at him with so much kindness it makes Tommy want to crawl out of his skin.
"You're a pilot," his captain says, oblivious to the dark spiral of Tommy's mind. Tommy exhales. Breathe. For fuck's sake. Breathe.
"And you're competent, skilled, you're quick. I'd love to keep you here. But I keep thinking maybe you belong elsewhere. And I hear the Harbor is looking for someone like you."
Tommy must look genuinely surprised because Nash lets out a huffed laugh. Tommy hasn't considered flying in years. "Seriously?"
Nash nods. "You're one of my best. But I saw the way you lit up when we called in air support last week. You loved working with them. So, my guess is, that's where your heart is."
Tommy thinks no one's ever paid attention to him like this before. His stomach unknots slowly. Shoulders uncurl.
"I'll -- I'll think about it."
Nash squeezes his shoulder. "You should. It can feel like suffocating. Denying yourself what you want."
Tommy stares down at his hands.
"Yes, cap," he says, throat working.
"Bobby." Nash points to the jeans he's wearing. "Off shift. I'm just Bobby."
"Bobby." Tommy echoes. His legs still feel like jelly.
He takes a few sips from the water. "I might --" His tongue feels heavy in his mouth.
"I might have to look for a new place soon."
He hasn't talked to Abby yet. But he needs to, has to. He wakes up, shirt soaked through with sweat at least twice a night. The darkest, deepest sea in his mind and his father's voice are so hard to turn off. He can't live like this anymore. He's been googling apartments. Abby doesn't even know yet.
"I really uh --" Tommy doesn't know why he keeps talking. "I tried to make a good thing work and it didn't work."
Bobby nods. "And that's causing the panic attacks?" He asks it matter of factly.
Tommy clears his throat. "One panic attack." Lie. But Bobby doesn't have to know or be right about everything. "And I guess --" He hesitates. "Gotta figure out some stuff. Big stuff."
Bobby doesn't say anything for a while. Keeps his gaze steady. Tommy thinks he could probably confide in him. Bobby would see the ugly, dark, twistedness of Tommy's insides and tell him it was okay. That it gets better. And the thing is, Tommy knows. He knows. He saw some kid online the other day on YouTube. They were what, 15? When Tommy was 15 -- well. He's mid thirties now, not any less terrified. It's difficult to explain, out loud. How his head works. How the stuff that goes for others, doesn't apply to him. How he's less deserving of it.
"The big stuff," Bobby says after a while. He looks at Tommy, face open. He says it like a question, gently prompting Tommy to continue.
Tommy's eyes prickle. He should go.
He exhales. "Yeah. Been pretending to be... Someone I'm not."
He's a teenager and his dad caught him with a magazine of naked men and his hand down his pants. He's in the army and Micah is kissing him. He's 34 and engaged to a beautiful woman and he feels nothing when she shakes around him.
His mouth is dry as cotton.
Bobby squeezes his shoulder. "I hear you." A beat. "Don't need to say anything else."
They sit like this for a little while longer. Then, Tommy gathers his things, shoulders his bag. The ground feels a little less shaky. His knees don't buckle. He'll find an apartment. And he'll tell Abby.
"Kinard," Bobby says when Tommy's already at the door. Tommy turns around. "Promise me you'll think about transferring, yeah? Go after what you want?"
Tommy huffs out a laugh. Shakes his head. His chest is lighter. "Aye aye cap." He gives a half hearted mock salute. What he means to say is thank you.
He's pretty sure Bobby hears it anyway.
On the way home, at a red light stop, a jeep comes to a halt next to his car. A guy leans out of the window and asks for directions to the LAFD training academy. He's young. Bright smile, short blond hair. Tommy tells him where to go and the guy thanks him profusely. "Starting a new chapter," he says enthusiastically and adjusts his backwards hat. Out of his stereo Tommy can hear hip hop blaring. Eminem. "Me, too" Tommy shouts back and watches the lights switch to orange. "Good luck then!" the guy shouts over the revving engine and grins. "See you around!"
Tommy laughs.
"You, too!"
Lights turn green.

New BuckTommy Fic!
Tumblr media
The Captain's Legacy: What He Left Behind And The Man I Chose To Become.
Rate M Read full story here.
🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒
After Captain Bobby Nash’s death, the 118 is left without its anchor — and Buck is left with an unopened envelope bearing the results of the captain’s exam he took in secret. When his name is unexpectedly called to lead, Buck must step into Bobby’s shadow, confront his doubts, and prove he’s more than anyone ever expected — including himself.
Snippet below!
🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒
The firehouse had never felt so quiet.
Not the usual calm between calls, not the comfortable stillness of a night shift winding down — this was hollow quiet. The kind that pressed into the walls and stretched long shadows across the floor. The kind that came after something irrevocable. The kind that came after Bobby.
Hen counted supplies with mechanical precision, Chim's frustrated muttering punctuating each slam of the med kit lids. Ravi moved through the bay, setting down equipment with just enough force to make everyone wince. And Eddie—Eddie had retreated so far into himself that his silence felt physical. This wasn't just mourning; it was anticipation. They all sensed the ground shifting beneath them, the inevitable collapse of what had been.
The locker room offered Buck a temporary shelter from all that weight. In here, time stood still enough that he could almost convince himself Bobby would appear any second, leaning against the doorframe with that patient look, ready to dispense exactly the right words Buck needed to hear.
But Bobby was gone and so Buck sat alone, hunched forward with his elbows digging into his thighs, turning the envelope over in his hands. Plain white paper, no frills. Just "Evan Buckley" typed across the front in standard font. Nothing special to look at. Nothing that hinted it would change everything. Yet somehow, he already knew.
The results of his captain’s exam. He'd started studying after things ended with Tommy—empty apartment, restless nights, that familiar ache of another relationship gone sideways. He needed an anchor. Something concrete to focus on while everything else drifted. So he cracked the books. Night after night. Long after his friends had wrapped up their shifts and disappeared into their lives.
He'd kept it to himself. Nobody knew. Not Hen, not Chimney, certainly not Eddie. He couldn't even bring himself to tell Bobby. As if speaking it aloud would somehow jinx it—like wanting more was tempting fate. Now here he was, Bobby gone, the 118 in pieces, sitting alone with a letter that might offer him a future he wasn't even sure made sense anymore. 🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒 @jamieroyjamieroy @fand0mfancies @xtarmanderx @loulou-land @winterbuckwild

We have enough ‘c!tommy goes through the horrors and then gets help from some other character’ fics. I want a fic where someone else is going through the horrors and c!tommy is the concerned bystander turned support character. And I dont mean for c!wilbur because that’s the only dynamic I’ve really seen like that. I’m talking: Puffychu couples therapy- with Tommy as the increasingly concerned therapist. Role reversal or something

chapter 2 of i am my mother's child is up now!
chapter excerpt:
“Eddie- what?” He looks over Buck again, moving closer and mentally cataloging every inch of him. He runs his hands down Buck’s arms, presses into his ribs, grabs his face and shifts it so the light covers it in its entirety. There’s a small, fading bruise across his forehead. But, Eddie knows that bruise, remembers the exact day Buck got it, so it’s nothing new, nothing to provoke immediate concern. He knows there’s something wrong, it’s practically radiating off Buck. But, physically, he’s in perfect health. There’s not a single scratch or bruise that wasn’t there when he saw him earlier that day. "You're okay? I just- you didn't answer and I thought maybe..." he trails off, unwilling to finish the sentence. "No. I'm okay," Buck says, in the tone of someone who is definitely not okay. But, he's here. He's right in front of Eddie and he's leaning into his hands, and- Eddie realizes then that his hands are still cupping Buck's cheeks, tracing across his skin in a gesture both soothing and reverential. And, maybe if this was a few months ago, he would've pulled away. But, this is now, and he has spent the last couple hours convinced Buck was bleeding out somewhere. So, he lets himself have this.

I don't think I've ever seen a wealth of fanfics quite like the DreamSMP's. Not only was fanfiction one of the building blocks to the actual canon there was just so much of it in so many styles. You had pages upon pages of just one specific subsection. I can tell you I've read at least ten raccoon hybrid tommyinnit hurt/comfort SBI fics. And there were more. There were vigilante fics, there was coffee shop, there was canon-adjacent, canon compliant, vampire, werewolf whatever the fuck you could imagine it had it.

Lookin' Good Good Looking
Kinda inspired by Ryan's new IG story
***
Eddie would deny if ever asked, but he liked to dress up and make himself look good. He especially loved to make himself look good for his boyfriends. Now that they had their daughter, Eddie temporarily took time away from firefighting to work at dispatch, he had a lot more time on hand. So he put that time to good use by learning new recipes for his boyfriends and son and learning new ways to make himself look good. Tonight was one of those rare nights when Chris was away at his friend's place and both Tommy and Buck were going to be at home since their shifts ended early. So the three of them decided to make a date night out of it.
After getting off work, Eddie picked Lily up from daycare and took her home. He let her nap while getting everything ready for dinner.
It was a movie and dinner in the backyard kinda night. The three of them bought a house with a big backyard with the sole purpose of holding movie nights in the back with their friends, but tonight it was just the three of them.
Dinner was all movie theater themed food. He got everything ready for the build-your-own nachos bar, as well as the mini sliders and hot dogs. By the time he finished snacks and dessert, Lily was awake. He brought her to the kitchen and fed her some mashed veggies which she always ate with little fuss.
"You like that huh?" Eddie cooed to the 6-month-old and leaned over to kiss the top of her head.
Lily made gurgled noises in return, making Eddie laugh.
"After this, you're gonna help Daddy pick out his clothes for tonight."
Lily giggled at that and clapped her hands together.
"You're so cute," Eddie said in awe and picked her up from her high chair. He took her to the sink and had her wash her hands and face before taking her to his room, where had one of her playpens. He put her in it and then started looking for what to wear. He found a white shirt with small flowers on it, picked up a pair of blue chinos, and showed it to Lily. "What do you think, Lily?"
He didn't get any reaction from her and she instead just blinked up at him with her big brown eyes.
"Yeah, I didn't think so either." Eddie frowned at the clothes in his hands like they had offended him personally. He threw them aside and picked up the next pair.
After seven tries, he finally got a reaction from Lily when he picked out a light pink shirt and paired it with white pants. This was a new set he had just bought but never worn because he wasn't sure he could pull it off.
But Lily seemed to love it as she made happy noises and clapped her hands together again.
"I like this too, but I don't know if I can pull it off," Eddie told her.
Lily just tilted her head to the side and blinked at him.
"You're right, I should try it, anyway."
After that, Eddie left to take a shower, letting Lily continue to play in her playpen.
After showering, he got ready and looked at himself in the mirror, letting out a deep breath. He looked good if he said so himself. The pink brought out the color in his cheeks and the tight white pants accentuated his thighs and even his ass when he turned to look at it.
Eddie put all the products in his hair and spiked it but he didn't like how it looked so after several tries, he finally just put it back like he usually did and left it at that.
"What do you think, Lily?" He asked his daughter who just giggled in return.
"I'll take that as a good sign," Eddie replied and picked her up.
He put sunglasses and a hat on her and took her to the backyard in her stroller where he set everything for movie night. Once the chairs were lined up and the projector was set, Eddie sat down on the chair with Lily and looked up at the sky as the day started changing to night.
He bounced Lily in his lap and cooed to her, making her cheer happily in return.
When Eddie looked at his watch, he realized it was close to 8 and Buck and Tommy still weren't home. He sent them both a text and got a quick reply from Buck telling him they were still on a call. Tommy, however, did not reply. Eddie tried not to let that concern him as he figured Tommy was probably flying.
Eddie's stomach growled at some point but he ignored it and instead played with his daughter. He doesn't know when, but sleep soon took over him and he fell asleep on the chair with Lily protectively held against his chest.
"Eddie."
Eddie heard his name being called and slowly opened his eyes. Buck's face came into view and Eddie couldn't help but smile softly, "Hey."
"Hey," Buck replied stroking the back of Eddie's cheek with his hand. "Looks like you and Lily took a nice long nap."
Eddie felt something heavy on his chest and looked down to see Lily fast asleep. "What time is it?"
"10," Buck replied.
"Sorry, we got home late."
Eddie looked over to his other side and saw Tommy giving him a remorseful smile.
"It's okay." Eddie sat up slowly, making sure not to wake Lily up. "I'll put her to bed."
"I got it," Buck offered and took Lily from him.
Once Buck left, Tommy squeezed into the seat with Eddie, making Eddie chuckle as the lounge chair wasn't big enough for two men their size. Tommy pulled Eddie into his lap and kissed him. "You look beautiful," he told him.
"Yeah?" Eddie asked as he got up and straddled Tommy's lap instead.
"Mhmm," Tommy hummed, slipping his hands inside Eddie's shirt. "You made yourself look pretty for us?"
"I made myself look pretty for me," Eddie replied, smirking. "And maybe you two too."
"Feeling a little left out here, fellas," Buck said coming over to them and pulling another chair close. "Damn, you look really nice by the way, babygirl."
Eddie blushed at that. "Thank you," he said.
"That's what I said," Tommy added. "I feel worse now for coming home late."
Eddie shook his head, "Hey, don't be. Work is important."
"Not as important as you," Buck replied. "Either one of you or our family."
"I agree," Tommy replied and kissed Eddie before leaning in to kiss Buck as well.
Eddie also kissed Buck before laying his head down on Tommy's chest and reaching out to take Buck's hand. "So do we still wanna do movie night?" He asked them.
"Hell yeah, we do," Buck replied. "We promised each other a movie and dinner date and that's what we're going to do. Besides, I think I saw nacho toppings in the kitchen."
"And I saw some chocolate strawberries in the freezer," Tommy told him, smirking.
"Were you two snooping?" Eddie playfully narrowed his eyes at them.
"Of course we were," Buck replied and kissed the tip of Eddie's nose.
"Thanks for doing this, Eddie," Tommy told him and brought Eddie’s hand to his mouth, kissing his knuckles.
Eddie chuckled and tried hard not to blush again but failed.

🚒❤️🚒❤️🚒
words, how little they mean when they're a little too late by Polish_Amber
Margaret and Phillip spent years not seeing their children and then slowly got back into contact with them until this point, where they think they’re in a pretty decent place, actually.
Except then Buck gets injured and, as his hospital room fills with evidence of a life they know absolutely nothing about and they meet and hear about people they’ve never heard of (including a child?!), they realise that perhaps it was all simply too little, too late after all.
—--
Or, the one where Buck builds a family and his birth parents get exposed to pieces of it in the aftermath of 6x10: In a Flash.
with every heartbeat i have left by iriswests
Buck and Eddie were expecting to have a little girl.
When their baby girl is born a baby boy, instead, Buck is suddenly confronted with everything he’s been ignoring since he learned about Daniel every time he looks at his son.

or; buck and eddie have a baby boy, and buck spirals a little bit
Atlas (bound) by Cecily_v, liminalmemories
A behind the scenes look at how you speedrun a relationship, and what happens when the pieces of yourself that you try to hide, embarrassed and afraid, come to the surface.
He glances at Tommy. Waits for him to say something. "Do you even know what you’re apologizing for?” Buck doesn’t say anything. Partly because what he’s apologizing for is too big to quantify, and partly because Tommy’s right, he’s not sure what it is precisely that Tommy’s mad about. “You know," Tommy finally says in that tone of voice that sounds calm but isn't. "When you asked me to your sister's wedding for our second date, I did kind of assume that meant you were close to your family."
in a little while (you will find some relief then) by allisonRW96
"Holding his breath, Buck turns on the bathroom light. His reflection in the mirror makes him want to sob.
Patches of pink cover his body. Not just his arms and hands, but swathes of his chest and stomach. His calves and shins. His arms are the darkest, pink giving way to lines of angry red and rising in blisters that Buck knows are only going to get worse. All of it itches."
Buck gets a severe case of poison oak. He handles it about as well as you'd expect.
Merry / Bright by Pansys_goth_gf
That’s when Eddie gets an idea. An awful idea. A wonderful, awful idea. An idea that’s going to break his heart if he proposes it to Buck. He does it anyway. “You could say I was your boyfriend. I mean, Chris is your kid too, Buck. You should get to be with your kid on Christmas.”
Or, there’s fake dating, Buck is loved by many people, and Eddie Diaz interacts with snow for the first time.

Completely forgot about 911 for a while but now that I’ve watched it again and I’m seeing Buck and Tommy… I kind of don’t like Eddie and Buck anymore??? Like it feels like Tommy is so much more committed and honest and Eddie feels kind of toxic in how he doesn’t speak his mind and is super petty. I still like his character I just don’t think I want Buddie anymore.

Seven(-ish) sentence sunday is still a thing, right?
Home. Tommy gets to go home and isn’t that a prospect. He is almost glad that he has to stay in the hospital for another week. Where else is he even gonna go? The doctors are still worried his burns might get infected and he has to get surgery on his knee again. There are complications during surgery. Tommy doesn’t have enough medical knowledge to understand the details of what the surgeon tells him. She talks fast and keeps to the facts in that same polite yet distant tone Tommy has grown accustomed to and she barely looks up from her clipboard the entire time she’s in his room. She looks tired and Tommy gets it. Her job is exhausting, physically and emotionally, and the shifts are long. He is just a box she can’t wait to have checked.
(Excerpt from chapter 3 of the Bucktommy fic I'm working on.)
