He doesn’t want to drag himself down from the high he’s on at this moment, the high he’s getting from finally giving his truth a try.

Summary: Buck, Tommy and what happens between two trucks.(Link to AO3)

Stolen Moments between two firetrucks.

A giggle that ends in a breathless moan as Tommy playfully pushes Buck back against the truck behind him. Warm lips part and connect in an already familiar way. Eyes flutter close and skin flushes. Fingers sneak into Buck’s hair, tousling it, uncaring about the soot caught in his curls.

Buck feels floaty. His heart is pounding, spurred on by the excitement that comes with the fact that they are hiding and kissing like two teenagers with a crush. He could forget time here. He could forget the job and all the problems of the last week. He could …

Tommy breaks the kiss and steps back. Buck instinctively reaches for him, grabbing Tommy’s arms. And yes. Maybe, he even pouts. “No.”

“You can have more kisses later,” Tommy chuckles, head turning to where someone could see them if they chose to stand between the two trucks right now. “Come on. We have to go back.”

Buck sighs. He knows Tommy is right. Time doesn’t stand still after all. He lets go. But only for the moment.

Stolen moments. Whispered conversations.

“Are you okay?” 

“No. Not really.”

“I’m sorry. The day will pass.”

“And another one will begin tomorrow … I feel like I’m going insane. I need this man gone.”

“Don’t let him get to you, Evan. That’s what people like him want. He is not worth losing your job.”

“I know. I know .”

“Hey. Look at me. Relax your shoulders. You got this. Just … think about home, alright? You will always get to go home after work. And I’ll be waiting for you there. Take all of this to me.”

“Okay. I’ll try.”

"Now go back and be awesome. My gorgeous hero firefighter."

"Thanks. But we all know I can't be more awesome than my gorgeous firefighter pilot."

"Aw. Look at that. You made me blush. Now we need to spend a little more time here together until I don't look like a tomato anymore."

"I can give you another kiss."

"That doesn't help, Evan."

"I don't care. Come here ..."

And sometimes, it’s just Buck. He sneaks away for a few minutes, leans back against the truck and sighs, pulling out his phone to check for a text from Tommy. He smiles when he sees it. Writes a reply. Chuckles about a funny image. Moments like these always brighten his mood, even when the day is shit.

He takes some deep breaths, looks up as a helicopter flies over his head, and takes a picture because maybe it’s Tommy. Buck’s whole phone gallery is full of pictures of helicopters and he never really wants to delete them because even if it wasn’t Tommy, Tommy can always tell him cool facts about the model. After sending the picture to Tommy, Buck puts his phone away and returns to his team.

Last he heard, Sal was over at the 122; he could always head in and see if anyone around there knows anything, but it’s a bit of last resort – and one that rushes to the back corners of his mind when the call is picked up. “Sal DeLuca here, who is it?” “Hey, man,” Tommy says carefully, leaning back against the kitchen counter; he’s making breakfast for Evan, who’s just on his way home from a shift, and the smell of bacon is lathered thick in the air. Tommy breathes it in slowly before he speaks, trying to calm his racing mind. “It’s Tommy Kinard.”

Summary: After the bee-nado, Buck waits for Tommy to wake up (Link to AO3)

“Have you seen the Bee Movie?” Buck asks, chuckling quietly and fidgeting with the bandage wrapped around his hand.

“I, uh, watched it with Chris once. We were laughing so much. It was a cute and funny movie. A bee fell in love with a human. And, uh, there was a plane. The pilots were knocked out mid-flight and so the bees helped land it. We really have to watch that movie together sometimes.”

He takes a deep breath, rubbing a hand over his still sweaty face. “Man. I wish those bees we had to put up with these last two days were as much fun as that movie …”

He shudders, remembering all those red swollen faces. Swollen hands. Swollen legs. Swollen arms. Everything and everyone swollen. No fun at all. Especially because the stings of those bees hurt like hell. Buck received one as well. Underneath the bandage, the whole side of his left hand is red and hot. He got some cream and a cooling pack for it.

Now, Los Angeles is slowly recovering from the insane incident that was called the “bee-nado”, the bees who were still crawling around alive being collected and settled somewhere else. The hospitals are filled to the brim with bee-related emergencies.

Buck is in the hospital too. Waiting for his boyfriend to finally wake up after he had to crash land his helicopter in a field and ended up unconscious, with a probably severe concussion and several bruises as well as lacerations. It could have been worse. Way worse. But still …

“You can’t keep doing that, you know?” He says, looking up from his hands at Tommy’s too still face. “You can’t always play the hero and let me sitting here, wondering if you will ever open your eyes again. And yes. I know that was what I was doing to people who cared about me way too often. But still. I can’t get used to how much this hurts. I miss you so, so much.”

And he could really use a hug right now. After everything that happened at work with Gerrard … 

Buck shudders as he remembers. Gerrard screaming at him for every little thing. Gerrard taunting him because he noticed Buck texting Tommy with a smile on his face. Gerrard telling him to stay behind and clean the trucks while the rest of the team went to deal with the bees. Gerrard still scowling at him even when Buck was the one who rushed to help him.

“Gerrard is allergic to bees, did you know that?” Buck tells Tommy. “He almost died. He didn’t even tell anyone. But I gave him the epinephrine that kept him alive until he could be taken to the hospital.” Buck scoffs. “Wasn’t grateful at all … I wish we could get rid of him somehow. I was thinking about something. But so far, I have no idea.”

He leans back in the uncomfortable plastic chair, squinting into too-bright neon lights, his thoughts floating away, to better, easier times. To Bobby. Oh he’s still pissed at Bobby. How could he resign?! Without telling anyone … Buck shakes his head, trying to think about something else. He’s not ready yet to face those emotions …

Time passes.

Buck almost dozes off. But then, a groan and a cough make him perk up. Tommy moves, brows furrowing and lids fluttering. He finally opens his eyes, blinking up at the ceiling in confusion. 

“Tommy!” Buck feels like a heavy weight is taken from his heart. Finally. Finally, he gets to see his boyfriend’s eyes again. He takes Tommy’s hand, squeezing it. “I’m so glad you’re awake.”

Tommy looks at him, eyes widening a bit. “Ev … Please. Tell me. Bees are gone,” he croaks.

Buck chuckles, leaning over to give Tommy a kiss on his cheek. “Yeah. They’re gone.”

Tommy sighs, eyes closing again. “Good. Everyone … safe?”

“Yeah,” Buck says, swallowing. His stomach clenches. “Everyone is safe. But Tommy … You have to be more careful in the future. I was so worried …”

Tommy hums. “Sorry. Didn’t … didn’t tell the bees to fly into engine.”

Buck huffs. “Yeah, I know . Still. It was risky to fly in these conditions.”

“Helped. Save the day. With the water,” Tommy points out.

“Yeah. You did. Again,” Buck says softly, holding onto Tommy’s hand firmly. “My big brave hero.”

Tommy smiles. “Hmmm. Another medal?”

Buck laughs. “I don’t know. Do you think chief Simmons has to do some damage control for his career again? If not, I don’t think so. Listen, I’m going to go and get your doctor, okay? She said they have to run some tests when you’re awake. Just to make sure it’s not more than a concussion.”

“Okay,” Tommy says, one eye opening and searching for Buck. “Please. Come back.”

“Of course,” Buck says, swallowing around the lump in his throat. “Always.”

He hasn’t gotten used to being this worried. But what he and Tommy have … It is worth all the pain.

In June of 2024, I went on a camping trip with my family for a week down by the beach. While we were watching the waves crash against the shore, I was scrolling through Tumblr when a certain gifset in my For You page caught my attention. I can't remember who made the gifset, but the scene it captured was Buck coming out to Maddie in 7x05.

I stopped scrolling and watched a mute version of Evan Buckley play the pronoun game with his sister, I watched him say the words "Sure, I'll check out a hot guy's ass, but that's normal," and watched Maddie say "It's not... abnormal," and despite having no idea who these characters were, I could perfectly hear every delivery for those lines in my head as if I had already seen the show.

Curiosity got the better of me, so I clicked on the gifmaker's profile and watched another gifset. The Fabled First Date scene. My introduction to Tommy Kinard was his eyebrow raise when Evan Buckley stuttered out "But I'm not weirded out!" The little nod he does after Buck says "I mean, I'm an ally." while on a date with a man never fails to make me laugh, and it was that gifset that had me text a friend and say: "hey have u heard of 911. the tv show?" The response I got was: "gay firefighters. i wanna watch the show ngl." When I sent over the link to the gifsets I watched, my friend sent approximately fifteen crying emojis, then proceeded to say: "Im so watching this show. You should watch it too. So we can talk abt it together. I never have ppl to talk to abt this stuff."

Thus, history was made.

As soon as I got back from that trip, me and my friend proceeded to binge the entirety of 9-1-1 in just over two weeks. I started 1x01, "Pilot" on 6/27/2024 at 9:40 PM, and finished 7x10, "All Fall Down" on 7/12/2024 at 1:59 PM.

Since then, I've become the most involved in a fandom I've ever been in, met plenty of wonderful people who share the same love for this series and these characters as I do, and have made dozens of memories that will be quite difficult to forget.

9-1-1 has been an unforgettable experience, and it's all because of a single small acting decision that Lou Ferrigno Jr. made while playing Tommy Kinard in 7x05, a gifset made by a random person on Tumblr that just so happened to show up on my For You page, and the encouragement of a friend to open Hulu and watch a silly little firefighter show.

Buck and Tommy were a fundamental reason as to why I started watching this show, and seeing them break up hurt me in a way I wasn't really prepared for. I knew I was invested in their relationship, but I never knew how invested I truly was until they were gone. Their breakup may be temporary or it might be permanent, and although their relationship is fiction, the hurt I felt was real.

And that's why the Bucktommy fandom has been so important to me, because in spite of the breakup, we're still going strong. The @alliwantforchristmasislou positivity project is amazing. Unfortunately, I cannot donate to a charity, but I strongly implore anyone reading this to donate if you can and haven't already.
