Change Is Who We Are
Chapter 1 - Encounter
Word Count: 4023
(next chapter)
“Aunt Nikea, when will the Night People come see us?”
“They will someday, and when they do, it will be beautiful. But I am afraid that it is a day I will not live to see.”
The sun was taking the light with it as it started to set behind Polyphemus. Oliver had just started a fire to keep himself warm for the night. Tomahawk, his banshee, was perched in the nearby canopy of the island’s small forest, snacking on some fish he had caught earlier. As Oliver stared into the flames, he was reminded of the events from two nights ago.
Gunfire and screaming filled his ears. His squad mates were getting picked off one by one. If he thought the first encounter with the Sullies in the forest was brutal, then this was more than a rude awakening.
“Mansk!”
By the time he turned around after hearing Prager call his name, Oliver saw his teammate get impaled with a spear. Not even a second later, Sully had dropped from a staircase overhead and landed right in front of the private. He raised his gun to take aim, but before Oliver could fire, a dead body was being hurled at him with full force.
Sully’s wrathful glare was the last thing Oliver saw before he stumbled backwards against the railing. He tried to stop himself from falling over, but he did anyway after losing his footing and banging his head against the railing.
It couldn’t have been more than 15 minutes. Flashing lights overwhelmed his vision and made his head spin. Oliver wearily lifted a hand to push himself up, but the second he did, his body slipped forward.
The sudden slide was enough to speed up his recovery and make him grab the railing before he could fall any further. His eyes widened upon realizing that the ship was beginning to capsize: If he didn’t move fast, he’d be taken with it.
He could save himself from drowning by running across the deck and jumping overboard, but that was risky if not impossible after such a hard hit to the head. Opting for the only option he could, Oliver steadied himself, shook his head to ward off the double-vision, and ran for his life.
Hauling his ass to the boat’s edge while dodging the debris falling in his path was hard enough, but between a brutal concussion, the AR on his back, and flames nipping at his heels, Oliver was starting to wonder if he would even live to see morning. He tossed his AR to the side. It wasn’t ideal, but at least he still had his WASP revolver.
He didn’t have a second to lose once he was at the rail: one of the catwalks above had just collapsed and was about to cut off his escape route. As he gracelessly leapt over the railing, Oliver could swear that a few hairs on the tip of his tail were singed by the surge of sparks.
The landing into the water was simple enough. He just crossed his arms, straightened his legs, and closed his eyes. It was the cold shock of the water and darkness that caught him off guard.
Even with a Na’vi body that gave him better night vision, he couldn’t see a thing when he was underwater and struggling to remember which way was up. It’d been a while since he had done any actual swimming. In fact, this was his first time ever as a recom. But he couldn’t afford to panic. Not right now.
Oliver sacrificed a breath of air to see what direction the bubbles would flow and figured out that he was facing sideways. His lungs were burning and screaming for air; his arms and legs felt like they were about to give out, and right when he thought he wouldn’t make it in time, he gave one last kick and breached the surface. The gasp he let out could be heard for miles.
The private panted as he regained his strength. He looked around and found a floating crate as if it were a Godsend. He eagerly doggy paddled his way toward it, and as soon as he latched on, the current suddenly changed.
He was far away enough that he didn’t have to worry about being pulled toward the scene, but in the distance, Oliver could see that the ship, engulfed in flames, had fully capsized and was now sinking.
He pressed his hand to his throat comm.
“Z-dog, you read?”
Nothing.
“Lyle? Colonel?”
Silence.
He tried again, but he noticed that the comm wasn’t sitting correctly against his throat. Oliver tore it off and held it to the fire’s light to see what was wrong with the damn thing.
The backing of one of the buttons was dislodged and had allowed water to drown the comm’s inner workings:
”Dammit!” he cursed.
The private couldn’t even start paddling toward the wreckage; the oil spill had been set ablaze, separating him from the ship. Oliver could only watch helplessly as the vessel fell below the surface.
His head started buzzing now that the adrenaline was starting to wear off. He didn’t want to accept that there was nothing left he could do, that he might be the sole survivor while all of his friends died in the fire. His ears fell back as he pressed his forehead to the crate.
His thoughts were interrupted when a screech came from above. Oliver only had a few seconds to look up before Tomahawk tried to land on the crate next to his rider.
“Tomahawk, no!” he yelled. The crate swayed beneath them from the unbalanced weight, and the banshee let out a startled squawk as he tried to steady himself. As close as the two of them were, even Oliver had to admit that Tomahawk wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
Once they both balanced themselves on the crate, and now that Tomahawk had calmed down, Oliver was able to lean over and grab onto his saddle. It was an awkward process to climb onto Tomahawk’s back while trying not to topple back into the water, but the private couldn’t afford for his banshee to take off while he was still stuck in the ocean.
Once he was secure on the seat, he queued up with Tomahawk and took off for the sky. Oliver made one last circle around the wreckage, and as far as he could see, there was no sign of survivors in the wreckage. No sign of life.
His stomach turned from the guilt, so he turned his eyes to the night sky. It reminded him of the night he first arrived on Pandora, back when he was human.
The officers barked at them to run straight into the compound and not to stop until they were inside. He’d only jogged a few yards when he glanced up. The sheer number of stars and the clarity of the other moons made him stop dead in his tracks. It was so much different than looking at it through a satellite station’s windows.
Oliver had only known what a night sky looked like from textbooks and the internet; Earth’s atmosphere was so polluted with smog that you could barely see the moon. It didn’t help either that he grew up in the city where the light pollution was bad too. Granted, the moon was practically gone ever since the RDA obliterated it to harvest its metal.
A nearby corporal snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Quit the gawking and hurry the fuck up!”
That was how Oliver met Lyle. Good times.
The guy was a certified asshole, but surprisingly enough, turned out to be a great friend. And it was through Lyle that Oliver met his other closest friends, like Z-dog, Fike, Ja, and Prager. They were lucky that they all got to be friends in this life too. Even if it was short lived.
Tomahawk’s shrieks erupted from the canopy. Oliver’s head snapped upwards to see what was going on when he was snatched from the sands and lifted into the air.
He craned his neck to see what it was that grabbed him, but he couldn’t get a good look with the limited range of movement. The private struggled to reach for his WASP, but the animal held his arms too tight for him to move.
It dumped him onto one of the enormous trees’ limbs where he continued to tumble from the momentum. He managed to grab the moss in time before he fell over the edge and fell the long way back to the ground.
Sensing that the animal had left, Oliver scrambled to his feet and drew his WASP from its holster. His breathing was quick but calm. He remembered what Spider had taught him and the other recoms about using their new heightened senses. Something about when you see nothing, you see everything, right?
Oliver flicked his ears in different directions and dropped into a crouch. His eyes couldn’t see anything disturbing the bioluminescent foliage, and his ears weren’t sensing anything behind him. He also couldn’t feel any vibrations in the tree limb through his feet to tell him there was something else walking nearby. His nose, however, told a different story.
There was a new scent coming from behind him. Something about it was very particular. It was almost… familiar?
Apparently, his sense of smell was more sensitive that the rest of the squad’s, and that made things even more uncomfortable for him than they already were. It creeped him out to be able to smell someone’s emotions because of the way hormones worked . Oliver had asked one of the doctors about it when the recoms had to get a routine check up; They said that it was normal and “not to worry about it.” It didn’t make him feel any less of a freak, though.
But he knew that whatever it was he sensed, it was behind him and drawing nearer by the second—
A hand grabbed the barrel of his WASP and a foot slammed into his gut. The kick was so hard that Oliver probably would’ve thrown up if he’d had a chance to eat earlier. He felt his gun get pulled out of his hand and fell square on his ass.
He looked up to see a Na’vi woman staring down at him. She was about his age (late 20s, early 30s), but it was hard to tell because of the strange way she dressed.
The RDA had given the rundown on all of Pandora’s Na’vi races regardless of whether or not the recoms would ever run into them. They’d seen pictures and watched videos for two weeks straight, but Oliver didn’t remember any mentions of the kind of Na’vi he was looking at right now.
The biggest difference was the clothing. She was wearing a long black clock that went down to her ankles. She also had one of those visors that he’d seen Na’vi warriors wear when they rode their banshees, but this one had black insect wings that covered the entire top half of her face. Only her big glowing eyes could shine through. Then there were the ears. Hers were so much bigger, and they each had tufts at the end that bounced as she adjusted her ears’ positions. Oliver noticed that her left one was mangled and scarred to the point where it flopped over slightly.
Yeah…if these guys had been in the lecture, he would’ve remembered.
His eyes widened when he heard a blade unsheath from under her cloak. Before he could blink, she was pointing a knife at him. Nope…not a knife, a machete.
He jumped to his feet and drew his knife. The Na’vi woman’s scarred ear twitched in annoyance, and, while maintaining eye contact with him, turned her machete to Oliver’s campfire in the distance. There, he could see a pack of viperwolves fighting over and munching away on the fish he had worked so hard to catch. Great. Now he didn’t have anything to eat for tomorrow’s flight to the next island.
Oliver let out a growl of frustration but stopped when he saw something move out of the corner of his eye.
He thought it was nothing at first. Then a light flickered. It flickered again and this time, he could see it was shaped like an eye: the kind you’d see on a moth’s wings. As the light moved closer, Oliver realized that what he had thought was the trunk of the tree all along was actually the animal that had snatched him up earlier.
It was shaped like a banshee, but it had two extra arms tucked to its chest. Instead of the typical bright colorations and patterns, it had black leathery skin, a smaller body, and much broader wings than Tomahawk. Oliver was going to comment on the lack of glowing freckles until the animal’s antennae bristled, and instantaneously, its body illuminated with thousands of rippling lights. It reared up on its back legs. On its enourmous curved wings, he could see giant pairs of eye-spots staring right back at him.
It was beautiful. It was terrifying.
When he turned his knife towards the animal, he heard another blade behind him leaving the sheath. Thank God this lady was smart enough to put their differences aside to fight off whatever this thing–
A blade’s point gently but warningly poked his back. His eyes widened, and then the animal before them leapt over the two of them. Oliver didn’t know what else to do, so he slowly put his knife back into its sheath. He let out a mental sigh of relief when he felt the machete lower itself from his back, and when he turned around, the banshee-like creature stood behind the woman in a defensive stance. There was a saddle sitting on its shoulders; whatever that thing was called, it was her mount, and she was its rider.
“Ka…ltxì,” Oliver said slowly. It might’ve been an awkward way to start a conversation, but what the hell was he supposed to do? Spider directed all of his Na’vi lessons towards Quaritch most of the time, so his vocabulary was limited.
The woman still had that owl-like stare locked on him when she tilted her head to examine him. It was probably his eyes that were weirding her out. Ever since he woke up on the table, he’d been covering his eyes with sunglasses because of a hiccup with his recom body. His left eye was yellow like it was supposed to be, but the right one was a shade of green for a reason the doctors couldn’t explain.
“Oeru syaw,” he said, and then pointed at himself. “Um…Oliver. Oliver Mansk. Angya?”
The Na’vi’s banshee cocked its head at him disapprovingly. At least Oliver thought it was meant to be disapproving. It was hard to tell since it didn’t have eyes. Just soft indents on its face where they should’ve been.
Flapping sounds emerged from the darkness as Tomahawk finally came to his rider’s rescue.
“About damn time,” Oliver muttered and rubbed his banshee’s snout. Tomahawk let out a hiss at the Na’vi woman and the strange creature behind her. In return, her banshee’s antennae silently ruffled up, and Tomahawk cowered behind Oliver.
“Are you serious right now?” Oliver groaned. He turned his gaze back at the woman whose expression was now bordering on judgmental. She rolled her eyes and turned to hoist herself onto her banshee’s saddle. That’s when Oliver spotted something odd under the feathers of her cloak’s collar.
“Is that a throat comm?” he asked in plain English. Her eyes widened and she faced him again. The banshee-like creature snaked its head in front of its rider to protect her. Jesus, for an animal that couldn’t see, it could sure read a room.
“Looks like you know English, too,” he scoffed.
She didn’t move. Neither did her banshee. They just kept staring at Oliver and Tomahawk. Well… the woman kept staring. He wasn’t really sure what to call it when the banshee had the whole no-eyes situation.
“In fact, I knew that scent was familiar,” he said. “You’re from the forest, aren’t you?”
The woman’s large ears shot upward, and her eyes screwed up in confusion under her visor. Now that got her attention.
“And there’s no way you could’ve disarmed me the way you did. Not without someone with experience to teach you,” he said. “So I’m willing to bet good money you know Sully too.”
She still wasn’t moving, just watching.
Now, Oliver didn’t want to admit it, but without his gun, he didn’t stand a chance against her. Not when she was holding two machetes and had a freakish-banshee to back her up. He was just going to have to bluff and hope that it scared her off.
“Look, if you just take it easy,” Oliver said. “I won’t tell my squad about you when they get back to our little campsite. They’re gonna be wondering where I am, so you might–”
“For a demon, you’re not very good at lying,” she said.
Now it was Oliver’s turn to be surprised. He didn't expect her English to be that good. Sure, she had an accent, but she was clearly fluent.
“And instead of raising your knife against my ikran, you could be more appreciative of the fact that I just saved your life,” she added with an annoyed tone. “Those aynantang had been watching you the moment you started cooking those fish.”
Aynantang? Oliver asked himself. She must’ve meant the viperwolves.
“Where is the boy?”
“I don’t know what you mean,” Oliver answered. She tilted her head and frowned as if to say really?
He sighed, “I don’t know. I got separated from my group. I’m just trying to find my way back home.”
The woman looked to her banshee who still hadn’t shifted its “gaze” from Oliver and Tomahawk. She rolled her eyes again and resumed the process of climbing onto the saddle. The private noticed that this saddle had wider foot holds and that there were straps tied along the creature’s neck in addition.
“Wait, so,” Oliver asked in confusion. “You’re just gonna leave? You’re not gonna kill me?”
“I don’t have to,” the woman deadpanned.
She made a clicking sound that signaled her banshee to leap off the tree limb and into the night. Oliver ran to the edge just in time to catch a glimpse of her banshee’s eye spots just before they disappeared into the night.
Nikea couldn’t help but silently curse herself after that encounter. She must’ve gotten careless when she and Rini were tracking that pack of demons back in the forest. That or the man was just blessed with better senses than the rest of his friends.
But no matter, that problem would solve itself: he was ignorant enough to camp on the forest floor where the aynantang and aypalulukan could catch him, and his fate was decided the moment he was chosen by that incredibly dense ikran.
But Nikea had bigger issues at hand. It didn’t bode well that she found one of these demons so close to Awa’atlu, where Neytiri and her family had taken residence. On the bright side, if Nikea ran into him here, then there was a chance that Spider wasn’t far.
“Are you listening to yourselves?”
Jake, Neytiri, and Nikea were standing in the Sullys’ family tent as they discussed an important matter. Neytiri was on the far side packing her personal belongings while Jake leaned against one of the posts. Nikea stood with her arms crossed across from Jake trying to talk some sense into him.
“They sent demons after our family!” Neytiri said while packing her things for their journey. “I do not wish to leave either, but it is for the best.”
If the situation wasn’t so grave, Nikea would’ve been laughing.
“I would understand if you wanted to leave your children with another clan while you fight here, but this is ridiculous!”
“It’s the only way to keep this family safe, the clan safe,” Jake said. “Them coming after me is what put the kids in harm’s way.”
“The Sky People threaten your children, and this is how you rise to the occasion?” Nikea asked. “Neytiri, how can you go along with this?”
Neytiri’s unwillingness to take her side was aggravating. She was opposed to leaving the forest too until Jake convinced her otherwise.
“And you,” Nikea continued, turning back to Jake. “Since when do you run from a fight? Even if the Sky People stop looking for you, they will still continue to destroy everything until there is nothing left of this world! The only way to save your family is to drive them out!”
“The war can be won without Jake leading—”
“Of course it can’t,” Nikea spat. “He used to be a warrior of the Sky People! The only reason we won the battle all those years ago was because of his insight!”
“Maybe we’d have a better chance at winning if you’d help us get the Night People on our side!” Jake countered, but he immediately regretted it when Nikea’s eyes widened and she bared her teeth.
“Do not try to blame me or the Alyara for your foolish decisions,” Nikea hissed. “I already explained to you that even if Nakir wasn't their Tsa'hik, they still wouldn't help.”
“They have Spider! Who knows what info they’ll get out of him!” Jake continued, trying to change the subject again. The hair on Nikea’s tail bristled at that remark.
“Spider would die for this clan knowing full well you wouldn’t even try to go back for him,” she hissed. “Everyone knows that boy is incapable of betraying us.”
“Of course he would betray us,” Neytiri said reluctantly packing the last of her clothes. “He is the son of the man who destroyed Kelutral. I’m the one who killed—”
“This animosity between you and the boy is of your making and yours alone, Neytiri!” Nikea replied vehemently. “He is just a child! When will you see that?”
“They can torture him, Nikea,” Jake said, trying to reason with her. “They have ways of picking his brain for all of the answers they want even if he’s not willing to tell them. Hell, they’re probably doing it right now!”
“All the more reason for you to stay!” Nikea exclaimed, throwing her hands up. “If not to rescue him, then to lead the people with a new battle strategy. We can work on finding him as we advance our attacks.”
“Do you have a death wish?” Neytiri growled. She tossed the now fully packed bag at Nikea’s feet. “Being within seeing-eye-distance of their settlements could get you kill—”
“What if it had been one of your children?” Nikea shouted. “Don’t either of you at least care that they took him? Enough to even try to find him?”
Jake sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Neytiri had nothing to say while her tail whipped behind her.
The silence that followed spoke volumes, and Nikea shook her head.
“You shame yourselves.”
Nikea turned to leave the tent and then paused at the tent’s entrance.
“The Sky People do not have outposts in the Eastern Seas,” Nikea said. “The Metkayina clan is in the center of that region. It will make it harder for you to be found. I have only ever been to the southern islands, but from what I have heard, Tonowari is a tough Olo’eyktan—their Tsa’hik Ronal is even tougher. I will have the route ready for you by sunrise.”
“You’re not coming with us? To guide us there?” Neytiri asked incredulously. She put her hands on Nikea’s shoulders, silently begging her to change her mind.
“So you can manipulate me into staying there once we arrive?” Nikea asked. She swatted Neytiri’s hands away.
“If there is a chance that Spider is alive, then I intend to bring him home,” Nikea stated. “Someone has to be able to say that they tried.”

Eden of the East (Episodes 5-11)
Not gonna lie, I thought that this anime was going to be a bit longer. I know that there are two movies but the show abruptly ends with Takizawa dumping all his money to become the "King of Japan".
In this last half we learn who Takizawa really is and what happened to all of the NEETs that he made disappear. In addition, we find out about the people really behind the missile attacks and their motives. The three seleção behind the new missile attack want to send Japan back into the postwar era in order to re-ignite the economic boom that occurred form the 50's to the 80's. I think this is quite a stupid idea, not just from a moral perspective, but logistically. There were a multitude of reasons that the Japanese economic miracle occurred, chiefly, a large workforce of soldiers needing new jobs and U.S economic and political intervention to prevent the influence of the Soviet Union. When 60 tomahawk missiles are launched at cities and important locations, sure that may cause some governmental restructuring or some widespread public outcry. But there is a lot missing in order to become the economic powerhouse Japan once was. There wouldn't be nearly as much U.S aid, and there is no giant workforce suddenly looking for jobs. I don't think it would work as they planned.
I did think that it was cool how the NEETs actually played a critical role in stopping multiple tragedies. Normally, NEETs are viewed as useless to society and not having any value, but the missile crises prove that when they have proper motivation they can solve incredibly difficult issues.
It is also important to note the commentary on unhealthy relationships that are shown in Eden of the East. Osugi's infatuation with Saki is clearly not great. He stalks Takizawa, entering his home to find evidence of anything that would cause Saki to dump him. He even uses the Eden app to crowdsource any information about Takizawa, which isn't explicitly wrong, but it feeds Osugi's doubts and enables him to continue looking for reasons to incriminate Takizawa. It is the perfect example of a stalkerish/obsessive relationship when clearly the other part is not interested.
Last thing I remembered real quick, the "bang" statement Takizawa says at the end reminds me of Spike saying "bang" at the end of Cowboy Bebop. Nothing substantial, just something I found cool.

𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐎 & 𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐓 @multipleoccupancy
Yes, Bad Theo was no longer an impressionable 16-year-old. He was an adult now, and he was a cultist. But her dad was right. Trying to argue with him was probably a pointless endeavor, and so far it had only managed to incur his wrath. "You're right," she sighed, "I tried to do like you said, and talk to him. I tried to lie. But I'm not very good at it. Every time he told me about the horrible things he does, I couldn't help but tell him... just how horrible he was."
Violet brushed the back of her neck with her hand. "I banged my head, yes. I was sick earlier, but I feel better now. I'm not nauseous or dizzy anymore." And to be fair, she could have very well thrown up because of the human heart she had found. Just thinking about it again made her feel queasy.
While she laughed at her dad's joke, Violet did believe Bad Theo to be heartless, in some way. She had witnessed his cruelty and wickedness. But he had saved her, too, and so she knew that things weren't so simple. "He did not hurt me, and he didn't force me to do anything else," she replied, "I think it's because I look just like his daughter."
"I searched her room, you know. And I found terrible things. A knife, and a tomahawk. A scary-looking book, too. She... I think she sacrifices people, too." She shook her head. "I know her parents would be heartbroken to find out. I'm sure they raised her like they raised me. But now, she's a cultist."
"It sounds like it, but it also sounds like he's fully embraced that life." Theo commented on the man he had never met but felt like he had a right to, given it was also somehow him! "You are right to be cautious about Wiley, and anyone who claims to worship Him." He praised her with another small flash of a smile, though he knew that she had already gone through the drama of trying to talk to his other self, he hoped that the apparent upset was clue enough that she should not push the subject with him. "You have to be mindful that it sounds like you trying to convince this other Theo that what he does is bad might be like trying to convince me to become a cultist." Not ever going to happen, essentially.
Violet had not followed his suggestion to talk to his other self but he did not know or understand the situation and if she had felt the need to run then he was not about to scold her for it. "I'm sorry you got hurt," but he frowned all the more at her mention of dizziness. "Did you bang your head?" Did she have a concussion as well?! "Are you still feeling dizzy or sick?"
He was shocked to hear who the heart had belonged to. He'd seen cultist do some crazy things in his time but he had never really considered their home life and whether or not they took things like giving someone their heart literally. He swallowed and then shook his head as he went to put another plaster on for her. "I guess you could call him heartless then," He tried his best but shakiest dad joke, just baffled by this other Theo and so terrified for Violet. What must she have seen in her sleep? "He didn't harm you though? Or make you do anything else?"

Jack: Ma won't let me have my own gun.
John: I know how you feel, son. When I was your age, I really wanted a tomahawk, but your grandpa Hosea wouldn't let me have one. So I held my breath until I passed out and banged my head on a rock.
John: Your uncle Arthur kept saying I might have brain damage.
Jack: Pa, what's the point of this story?
John: I like stories.

so there’s this nhl pride collection with prints for each team saying “in [blank] we have pride” or something along those lines. for every team except the blackhawks. Chicago is listed as a city that a charity will be donated to, but no art. felt weird to me and I’m having trouble pinpointing exactly why. Artists are under no obligation to make art of something that makes them uncomfortable (which the hawks logo probably did) but I don’t get why the alternate logo couldn’t have been used I guess? And I know hockeyblr hates hawks fans but it feels weird to be excluded in something like this. my little gay ass was so excited when I saw some of the prints then very sad when I realized they just ignored Chicago. anyways rant over have a good day 💛
Hey! I understand your disappointment entirely, especially because of the number of fandom writing initiatives (big bangs, fic exchanges, etc.) exclude either the Blackhawks or Kaner.
Because of that I ended up contacting the artist, whom I've been following for some time even before he released the pride logos. I should add here that my ask could have been formulated differently--I was mostly tired of not getting to participate in other fandom initiatives and then this on top of all that felt a bit shit. His response was far nicer than my tone warranted, to be honest, and really nothing but professional.
Anyway, as you predicted, the reason is indeed the artist's discomfort drawing the Hawks logo and secondary logo. He didn't mention this in his response, but the alternate logo is of two Native American tomahawks, which themselves have not just functional purpose but also ceremonial meaning (x). I also did not get the impression at all that the artist hates Hawks fans in any way, shape, or form.
So while personally I think a statement to the Hawks fans would've prevented frustrations on our side and any misunderstandings regarding the intent here, he is in no way obligated to do so, and I do fully understand his decision not to draw the logo. He also made sure to include a Chicago charity to still support the city's LGBTQ+ community that way.
I will say, I was very much looking forward to an alternative design for Chicago, and preferably one that would have somehow omitted the logo(s). I don't especially want to use anything with the primary logo on it, and the alternate logo is questionable to me for the aforementioned reasons. Seeing something different would've been nice and I'd definitely have bought it in that case--but alas.
In the end, though, while I absolutely agree that it sucks that the Hawks are frequently omitted in the fandom, nobody is obligated to include them. This is especially true for something like a replication of the logo. Anything allegedly behaviour-based I find veers quickly into the area of virtue signaling, and a holier-than-thou approach that I don't personally think is appropriate for the NHL's generally toxic culture.
#I hope you're alright nonny <3#but yeah it still sucks and you're allowed to feel sad about it#to the artist in question: lmk if you want this taken down#but 0 hate and i do think it's something fans need to know#especially when tumblr makes it so easy for us to believe it's an act of malice towards the fans which it just is not

HBO War College Sports AU
Been watching alot of college football lately so I thought I’d do some headcannons and take a break from the WIP I’ve been banging out. Hope you guys enjoy this one.
Toccoa University is known for athletics, their very first year most of the guys already signed up
Their team is the “Toccoa Chiefs”. At every game the crowd does the war chant and the “tomahawk chop” (Big shoutout to my favorite college team which is the Florida State Seminoles)
Winters, Haldane, Jones, Basilone, Randleman, Buck, JP, Manny and Brad all play football. One time they painted their faces before a game and Sink wanted to kill them for it. It was all in good fun but they quickly learned their lesson cause that shit took FOREVER to come off
Nix and Web both play baseball. Webster always keeps his baseball jersey cleaned and hanging up in his closet at all times. Nix unfortunately forgets that his has dirt and grass stains all over it and forgets to bring it down to the college laundry room
Jay and Liebgott play lacrosse for the college. They love it but on the days when they play a really competitive school it can get ugly pretty fast
Jay’s had almost any kind of injury he can think of, scrapes, bruises, skinned knees and elbows, sprains etc. but he doesn’t let it get him down
Sledge, and Sid play soccer. Sledge was desperate to play for the Chiefs. At first his mother wouldn’t let him, but he quickly proved her wrong when they went 13 and 0 the entire season
Burgie, Snafu and Hoosier play rugby, soooooo many injuries but still fun
Runner’s specialty is track and field. This guy is lightning fast on his feet
Tatum, Evanson, Walt and Ray all play basketball. Cobb got kicked off the team for complaining when Tatum made team captain
Tipper is the newest addition to the basketball team. The guys all gave him his new Chiefs jersey on his birthday
Leckie is the school sportscaster along with Chuckler. He does alot of podcasting, radio broadcasts and sports articles for the college papers
Luz, Muck, Malarkey, Welsh and Penk are all involved with the swim team. The coach brought them up to Maine once to practice for the Polar Plunge.....never....fucking.....AGAIN
Lip, Roe, Babe, Julian, Spina and Speirs are part of the canoeing team. Every year they go to Hawaii to compete on the open ocean competitions
Guarnere and Toye are also part of the football team. At first Guarno and Winters didn’t get along but when the team started winning game after game, he quickly wised up
Kitty, Faye, Franny, Lena, Vera and the rest of the girls are the cheerleaders. The guys are proud to see their girlfriends at the games and Leckie’s especially proud of Vera

Charles and Tayen’s first robbery
this is their first robbery with the gang, featuring Arthur
hope you enjoy!
Tayen and Charles had been with the gang for close to a week now, “members” but haven’t yet been welcomed as one, as they haven’t been taken on a job so someone can see how they work.
While Charles was happy to wait, doing chores around camp as needed, slowly getting acquainted with everyone, Tayen was quite the opposite. Almost every day she would go to Hosea or Dutch, “Found a lead yet?” And every day they would smile and laugh and shake their head, saying her time to shine would come soon.
That time finally came when Arthur came back to camp after first meeting them, telling Dutch about a stage coach of a wealthy oil man making his way West.
“Good,” Dutch nods with a smile. “Take the two new ones with you: Charles and Tayen.” Arthur gives Dutch a two finger salute and walks off to gather the other two.
He finds them at the campfire, tending to their weapons, idly passing the time. He approaches the two and calls out, “Mr. and Miss Smith! We got a job for you.”
“WOOHOO!” Tayen leaps up with a cheer, quickly putting away her knife and getting her other things ready. “What is it? Where is it? Oh! Do I get to sneak into a house-”
“Easy woman, Jesus.” Arthur holds his hands out like he’s trying to calm a spooked horse, but there’s laughter bubbling in his chest. “Just a stage coach headin’ West. Some rich oil guy.” But Tayen did not seem put off by that, nearly vibrating with excitement as she eagerly awaited her brother who got ready much more leisurely and carefully.
“So we’ll take ‘em at night?” Charles asks as he walks up, holstering his sawed off.
Arthur begins walking to the horses, the other two following. “Yeah, from what I heard he wanna ride through the night, so we’ll take ‘em on the road.”
Arthur strokes Boadicea’s nose, waiting for the two to tack up and get up. Their horses matched their personalities: Taima calm, munching on a carrot Charles had given her. Whereas Inola was nearly prancing in place, head bobbing up and down, Tayen having to work to get the bit in.
He waited for the two to mount up before he mounted Boadicea, “Alrigh’, we’ll stake out on the cliff overlookin’’ New Austin. Wait for ‘em to ride down, then follow.” He turns Boadicea, bringing her into a trot, they had hours to get there after all.
Only Tayen and Inola races past him, cheering and calling out. “Keep up old men!” Arthur could hear Charles’ sigh from his spot, but Arthur only gives him an amused smile.
“She always like this?” Arthur questions, Charles looking to the man for a moment, a small smile forming.
“Normally not this... excited. Think she’s just antsy to show off what she can do.”
“Well, ‘m sure you two’ll be fine.” And Arthur meant it: they were clearly competent at nearly everything they do, working very well together despite their clear differences. But that’s how family is, Arthur thinks, briefly reminiscing on him and John’s jobs, back when they were close Brothers.
Arthur and Charles ride in relative silence, not awkward silence, but silence of two companions simply taking a ride.
They reach the cliff just as the sun begins to set, catching Inola off to the side grazing, but his rider nowhere to be seen. Arthur looks around, not freaking out... yet, but certainly a little on edge.
“Tayen? Where are ya?” He calls out, noticing Charles leisurely riding up to the cliff without a care.
“Up here!” Her face suddenly appears beneath the foliage of the tree, upside down with her braids dangling. “Nearly fell asleep waitin’ on you old ladies!”
“Simply not wanting to push our horses,” Charles answers back as he dismounts. “Now come be helpful.” Tayen groans and Arthur swears he can hear Tayen give a little mocked copy of Charles’ order before flipping off down the tree.
Being “helpful” included taking care of the horses and handing Arthur some salted meats and water, which Arthur took generously, giving his thanks.
The three waited as the sun set and the stars began coming out, a waning crescent moon slowly making its way in the sky. They didn’t talk much, but Arthur still seemed to learn more about the two.
Charles was always doing something productive, whether that was fletching arrows or cleaning his gun or even sharpening his knife and axe. Hands always busy.
Tayen seemed to always do things as well, but in a different way. She’d touch up the paints on her face, putting the paint on confidently without a mirror. She’d sometimes flap her hands or pull her braids, but seemed to stop herself after a while, sitting on them. She’d even call out different animal calls, saying what the animal was and maybe even a fact about them. Arthur caught her a couple times softly hooting like an owl, a very convincing owl, he thought one had perched up at the tree before realizing it was her.
By the time they heard the coach, Arthur had finished sketching the two around the fire, Charles hunched over an arrow and Tayen smiling with a hand on her braid.
“Alrigh’, bet that’s them.” He called out, and just like that it was like they were brought back to life. Tayen leaping up and jumping up onto Inola, and even Charles hurried a little to Taima. The three rode to the cliff edge, watching the stage coach make its way down the cliff edge. A single lantern illuminates the front of the coach where they see the driver and a shotgun driver.
Arthur takes out his binoculars, conveying the rest of the information. “Shotgun driver with two riders in the back. Think the Rich Man’s got a wife wit’ ‘em as well.” He puts away the binoculars, sniffing, thinking.
“Alright,” He looks to the other two. “Charles, yer gonna ride ahead an’ stop the coach. Do your best not to shoot anyone but the shotgun does look experienced, so might need a bullet in the arm.” He nods, face stone. “Tayen, you an’ I are gonna take out the guns, like I said I wanna try to avoid killin anyone, but we might have to take out the guard.”
“Not a problem for me!” She grins crookedly.
Arthur laughs, pulling up his bandanna. “Didn’t think it would be.” He looks as the two pulls their own bandanna up: Charles a simple black like his own, but longer, covering his entire neck. While Tayen had a black bandanna that was also painted: a grinning animal with sharp teeth, wolf maybe.
“Alright, let’s go.” He turns his horse, trotting off with Tayen as Charles is the one this time to ride ahead.
The two follow behind him, not the silence like from earlier that day, but one of seriousness, of two people preparing for a job. They stay behind Charles but not too far behind, watching him easily catch up to the coach from a distance, keeping away from the coach to catch them off guard.
The driver was just beginning a turn when Charles cuts in, pulling Taima right to the front of the wagon with his sawed off aimed, the driver pulling on the reins hard, the horses snorting as they skid to a stop.
“Drop it.” Charles orders the shotgun driver, and even from the distance, Arthur could hear the pure intimidation in his voice, and the lack of a shot ringing out proves that he is good at that sort of thing.
Now it was their turn, the two riders readying themselves to take Charles out, but they aim their own guns and Arthur grunts out this time. “Don’t even think ‘bout it, partner.” The two guards look over their shoulder, catching the two guns to them, and they sigh heavily as they raise their hands in surrender.
“Drop the guns, all of ‘em.” Tayen orders and Arthur doesn’t miss the blink in surprise from them as they realize one of their assailants is a woman. But they do comply, dropping their repeaters and taking off their gun belt slowly.
By this time Charles was by the side of the coach, the gun the shotgun had was tossed to the side.
“Watch these two,” Arthur orders Tayen, pointing to the two guards as he dismounts and meets up with Charles. He goes to the door and knocks harshly, “C’mon. Money, valuables, all out ‘ere. Sooner you do it the sooner you can be on yer way.” There was hushed talking on the other side, and Arthur was worried they were up to something.
But then the door opened and a stack of money, a coin purse, and several jewelry hit the dirt at his feet.
“Thank ya kindly,” Arthur charms as he picks it up, trusting Charles to watch his back. He counted the money: a good three hundred dollars plus the jewelry. Not a bad take. He pocketed their take and was ready to head back when suddenly Tayen called out.
“Hold up,” Tayen dismounts, ignoring the guards as she approaches the coach, eyeing it. “This is a personally owned coach.”
Arthur shrugged, “So?”
“So personal coaches tend to have secret stashes. In case something like this were to happen.” Tayen informs, her smile growing. “I bet they’ve got somethin’ hidin’ in there. Arthur scratches his chin, it was a good observation, but he wasn’t sure if it was true.
“That true?” Charles now calls out. “You got more hiding away?”
There was silence on the other side, so Arthur banged his hand on the door again. “Hey! Answer the damn question!”
“Yes!” A shrill cry of a woman came from inside. “T-there’s a hidden compartment beneath the dashboard.” Charles went to the front of the wagon, watching the driver and shotgun carefully as he felt around, finding a latch and breaking it open with the hilt of his sawed off.
Arthur is watching Charles work, making sure he didn’t run into any trouble, and Tayen was bouncing on her toes, excited that her hunch worked out.
But that meant none were watching the two guards behind them: where one was slowly dismounting, reaching for his handgun.
But Inola saw, and Inola was already skittish. He stomped his hooves, giving a high-pitched cry. Tayen turned to see what was wrong, only to see the man cocking his gun.
“SHIT!” She shouted and instinct took over before Arthur could even draw his gun. But even his instincts were too slow for the woman: with her left hand she took her tomahawk at her side and threw it sideways, a dull thunk sounding as it split into the man's forehead. Arthur shot the other guard who was now trying to reach his gun now, a bullet to his chest and he quickly dropped dead.
“Damn fools,” Arthur sighed and holstered his gun, turning to Charles. “Got it?”
Charles nodded, tossing the extra take to him: five hundred dollars.
Arthur shoves the money into his satchel and marches up to the driver, eyes hard as he ordered. “Now you two are gonna close yer eyes and count to sixty. When you do you, you can open ‘em an’ be on yer way. Got it?” The two men nodded, gulping, very much not wanting to be shot.
The three mounted their horses and quickly rode off, kicking up dust as they raced through the silvery moonlight.
Arthur finally slowed them down once they were back up the cliff and well into West Elizabeth, putting down his bandanna. “Think we’re good.”
The two slowed and followed suit, and Tayen was quick to speak. “Sorry for not watching those guards... didn’t think they’d try shit.” Arthur turned, seeing genuine guilt in her eyes, it caused Arthur to smile.
“Naw yer good, Tayen.” He chuckled. “No one got hurt an’ you’ve got some good reflexes on ya. Just stay focus next time.”
“Will do!” She straightens, guilt suddenly gone in favor of a broad smile.
“You both did good,” Arthur compliments, looking to Charles and nodding to him. “You work well together an’ are good with orders. More than I can say for most in the gang,” he can’t help but add at the end. “Once I fence the jewelry I’ll split the cut. ‘Member, half goes to camp, the rest is split between us. ‘Cause this is your Welcome Robbery as Dutch likes to put it: you get more of the cut.”
The two nodded in agreement and they rode back in relative silence: Tayen popping up every now and then to share a story or to simply make her owl noises.
Yeah, Arthur thought. These two will be a good fit.

Classes/Jobs the Assassin’s would play in Final Fantasy XIV
Jumping on the hype train for the Endwalker expansion coming out! I’m in love with FFXIV however I’m very anxious and cheap when it comes to spending money on video games so I’m playing the trial to the absolute fullest until purchasing the full game.
Wanted to apologize for the slight absence in posts, I’ve been consumed by the trenches of this MMO and most recently Genshin Impact.
Without further ado, what classes would the Assassin’s be?
Altair: Paladin
I headcannon this more so with Altair being a little bit older and becoming more wiser over the years whilst in the brotherhood. He’d want to protect his team just as he would his family and his fellow brothers and sisters and I thought the Paladin class would be a good blend. He protec but he also attac
Ezio: Dragoon
This one was tricky cause Ezio is skilled with numerous weapons and fighting styles. We’ve seen him with the assassin blade, swords, some hand to hand combat, but there is just something about him wielding the spear that seems so sexy and fun, so I thought Dragoon would be a fun choice. Also that one mechanic from the game may or may not have enforced this decision.
Connor: Bard
The closest thing I’ve seen to a tomahawk fighting wise was an axe so I originally fought of the warrior, however I was worried it might feel too bulky for Connor’s prefered fighting style. Yes he’s a big strong boy and can take on a whole army if he wants to, but let’s be honest, I think his most threatening weapon would be the bow. His cold and calculating strikes would strike fear into all the mobs.
Desmond: Monk
This one was kind of a no brainer for me. Not much really to say about this choice other than it seemed to fit Desmond very well, and pretty much any of the assassin’s in general, especially the modern day assassin’s where if traditional or normal weapons weren’t available, why not use your fists to get the job done?
Edward: Machinist
When it comes to pirates in FFXIV, there aren’t technically any pirate themed classes. We know that Edward is skilled with a cutlass so perhaps he could be a warrior, but he also knows his way around hand to hand combat through bar fights and knives/daggers, so he could be a monk or a ninja. However one of my personal favourite weapons to use as him in Black Flag were the pistols and so the most logical choice to me was the Machinist class. Edward can knock down all those who get in his way with a bang!
Arno: Red Mage
This one by far is the perfect fit because it is one of the more aesthetically elegant classes. A good combination of sword and magic skills, Arno can sweep the floor with his enemies and look damn good doing it. Plus I think Arno wearing those big hats with the feather on the side would look really cute.
Evie: Scholar
Brains or brawn? Why not take both! Scholars are brilliant healers and damage dealers, especially when they summon their magical companions to come to their aid. Evie would help heal and stat boost her party members and have her own fair share of action in the boss battles.
Jacob: Gunbreaker
A similar idea with Arno, this class combines two of Jacob’s strongest skillsets. Sword play and marksmanship, allowing him to fight up close or steer back and take aim when the situation calls for it. A quite flashy and in your face job class, it’s perfect for the brash yet brave gang leader.
#post was getting a little long so I'll pause it here#but I'll be making a part two#expect more posts like this combining other fandoms and games#it's really fun figure out how everything would match up#do you play ff14?#What are your thoughts on the game?#assassin's creed#final fantasy xiv#headcannons

@slutteryingreen tagged me for the four album thing. To mix things up I decided to go with the last four albums I’d played:
1) Funkdoobiest - Brothas Doobie
I’ve been on a bit of a 90s hip-hop binge recently (what a decade) and this is a decent album. There’s some proper bangers on here; Lost In Thought, Rock On, Dedicated as well as... lot’s of quite gross sex songs. I’m not being a prude it’s proper sick-in-the-moth stuff, like sitting in the passenger seat next to a divorced uncle muttering ‘pwor she’s a bit of alright isn’t she’ at the sight of jogger. Anyway Son Doobie ended up making porn so I guess that squares up, it’s kind of strange how now that hardcore grot is freely available on tap it hasn’t infected every single crevasse of pop culture (compared to the 90s anyway) but maybe it has and we’ve all been too busy wanking to notice. ANyway all that stuff if forgiven for Tomahawk Bang which is about a load of settlers being slaughtered by Native Americans and is absolutely divine.
2) Sleigh Bells - Treats
If you haven't heard Treats then for heavens sake do. Even if you don’t like it at first, just experience it, let it overwhelm you and soak it in because there’s really nothing else like it. I’ve never really bothered to listen to any of their other albums because I don’t see what they could do that would progress from this but I probably should. Even though it’s the most conservative song on the album, Rill Rill is my favorite track because I’m sucker for anything that plays with sixties sounds without just replicating it slightly worse.
3) Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
I love Cypress Hill. I’m not sure whether this or their first album is best but they’re both crawling with amazing stuff. Insane in the Brain and I Ain’t Going Out Like That are of course standouts but Hits From The Bong will always have the most special place in my heart, I adore the way it offers a practical guide to the advantages of smoking a bong and steadfastly refuses to go anywhere deeper or more philosophical.
4) Soccer Mommy - Color Theory
Look you don’t need me to write paragraphs gushing about Soccer Mommy because you already know that I love her so. Anyway it’s about a year since Color Theory came out and it’s still my go to for when I feel a bit dejected. Every song on here is good but I’d like to point out that Royal Screw Up manages to walk an incredibly delicate tightrope in describing self loathing in a way that’s very simple, direct and moving but still sounds very fresh. Well done Sophie.
That was fun: I tag @742evergreenterrace @plastic-tulips @safeinthewomb and @toasterwhisperer love ya xx
