Girls:

Christmas Specials - Day 2: A Very Happy Sweater

That day after work, you rushed home immediately to see did the second letter come to be met with a package on your doormat, the same place where the mysterious sender had left the pot of Poinsettia.

It had red packaging and a golden ribbon wrapped around it, a bow decorating the top of the box. It was most definitely made with magic, no one could make a bow as exquisite as that.

The bow had a bit of glitter on it, with golden beads drooping from the middle and there was a pine cone in the middle with fake snow. No wonder the scent of pine cones lingered around the box.

You pushed the door open with the box in hand, setting it down on the table, you waved your wand and the wrapping unwrapped on its own, revealing a simplistic brown box. You took off the lid and to your surprise, it was a red and gold sweater with reindeer patterns on it.

It was tightly knit and seemed very thick and warm and you loved it. You picked it up and a letter fell from it, the envelope of the letter containing the same designs as the last letter. Yellow and simple, with your name scrawled on it.

You opened the envelope and took out the contents.

'To my dearest Evelyn,

Did you expect this gift? I suppose you did, seeing that you were smarter than most of the students in your grade.

I know that this is a really cringy gift but I hope you liked it. My mum was the God of ugly sweaters, and I took it upon myself to make sure that your sweater wasn't as ugly as mine. She wanted me to give you one of her knitted sweaters, but then again, she really was the god of ugly sweaters.

I knitted it myself(with the help of the magic of course), so please excuse me if it didn't come out the way I wanted it to. Very unoriginal, I know and please excuse me, but I wanted to give you something that looked nice and could keep you warm at the same time.

"Y/n, are you listening?" Luna waved her hand infront of you, shaking you away from your thoughts. Though you didn't answer back, your eyes only stayed from where it was earlier.

Luna raised her brows and looked at what you were staring. "Oh y/n/n..." she sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose.

You only stood there and stared. Hurt was clear in your eyes, you didn't want to believe the rumors but there they were, standing with each other and acting all lovey dovey.

Draco snaked his arm on pansy's shoulder, while whispering something it must have been funny since that made pansy giggle. You sighed and looked down. "He will never see me the way he sees her".

Luna stared at you empathetically, and glared back at pansy with rage. She knew that you liked draco and still decided to ask him out. And you did nothing about it, only because you didn't want to ruin pansy's happiness even if it meant sacrificing yours.

That's what made luna's blood boil, you were too nice to be her friend. "Come on y/n let's get out of here, it reeks of trash" she yelled the last part, emphasizing the word trash.

It made pansy look at the two of you and rolled her eyes earning a scoff from luna. Luna then grabbed your hand and dragged you away from the unseemly awful sight, you only followed and stared blankly. Everything inside of you just feel numb, you wanted to just stare at the ceiling of your dorm room and just lay there doing nothing.

The two of you finally stopped, you looked up and saw that you were in an empty class. She grabbed your shoulder and shook you, "wake up y/n you have to move on, can't you see what she's doing to you?".

Luna kept on scolding you but you didn't want to hear it. You looked to her side and just zoned out.

Why?

You only wanted to share your feelings to your dearest friend, but why did she have to steal the guy you were pinning on for years. What did you do so wrong to deserve this, you were nothing but nice to her and she repaid you with that?.

The image of them clouded your mind, at that moment you want nothing to just be her. You wanted him to have his arm around you not hers. You want nothing but to feel his love for you and only you.

The next thing the wonderful watercolor boy made Tom was a lake. There was no way to tell time inside the diary—it might’ve been an hour since the Watercolor Boy painted Tom the little hut, it might’ve been a year, who’s to say?

But eventually, the color maker returned. Tom sat back against the low stone fence surrounding his hut, watching with rapt fascination as the paintbrush reappeared, moving with wide, confident sweeps as it created a small lake just at the bottom of the hill. He watched, mouth slightly agape, as the brush hesitated, before slowly painting in a wisteria tree that wept dusty lilac petals all over the ground. A petal fell onto the surface of the lake, staying stationary for a moment before sinking below the surface.

It was beautiful.

Tom laughed, loudly and genuinely, as he sprinted down the hill towards the newest treasure, barely stopping to kick off his shoes before leaping into the lake.

It was freezing. As Tom resurfaced, his teeth clacked and chattered. His robes were heavy with water (real water!) and he had to slowly drag himself out of the depths. He laid on the bank, breathing heavily and shivering.

As he looked up at the never-changing paper sky, he wondered (not for the first time) what would happen if he asked the Watercolor boy to paint him something specific.

What if he got scared off?

What if he stopped painting?

No, Tom couldn’t risk that.

So he kept silent.

The first living thing the Watercolor Boy painted in the diary was a girl. Barely reaching his shoulder in height, she had long, wavy blonde hair and a perpetually faraway look in her eyes. At first, Tom had wondered if Watercolor Boy had made a mistake while painting her to get such a dreamy look on her face, but then she’d introduced herself as a Lovegood. It all made sense then.

Luna.

Her name was Luna.

Tom thought that was the most beautiful name in the world.

Or at least he did.

“Luna?” Tom whispered, his voice cracking from decades of disuse.

“Yes, Thomas?”

They both laid on their backs underneath the wisteria tree, watching the petals fall and the stars glimmer.

(Stars. Stars! Watercolor Boy had gifted them with stars.)

“The Artist. The Creator. Who is it?”

“Who made me?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas,” Luna sings, spinning around barefoot in the center of his hut. Her wand (that doesn’t work inside the diary, as it turns out) is tucked behind her ear, threatening to fall with every movement.

“Yes, Luna?” Tom looks up from his copy of the Quibbler. (The issue was from 1997. 1997!)

“There’s a door.”

Tom blinked. “A door?”

“Yes,” Luna murmured, her earrings swinging as she spun around again. “It’s not painted. It just appeared. Right there,” she slows her spin to point at the wall, where sure enough, there is a door. It’s not a true door, though. It looks cut, like someone took scissors to his beautiful hut and left a jagged doorway.

Tom stood. “Do we- should we go in?”

“I can’t leave, Thomas,” Luna smiles. “I already know. I can see it. I’m not real, so I can’t leave. But you’re real.”

“You- it leads to outside the diary?”

“Yes. I’m just a painting, so I am afraid I cannot accompany you. It was lovely meeting you, Thomas. I’ve much appreciated our friendship, however short lived.”

Tom touched the jagged edge of the door and gasped when the paper cut his fingertips. “I can’t just leave you, Luna. I’ll- I’ll miss you.”

“I won’t be truly gone,” she smiles again, that lovely dreamy smile. “If I never existed, then I can’t ever really be gone.”

Her words hit him hard.

“I’ll miss you anyways,” he said stubbornly, feeling a bit like a child again.

Luna stopped spinning entirely, stepping forward to grab ahold of Tom’s hand, and maneuvering it palm up in front of them.

Tom gasped.

His palm and fingers were streaked with blood from the paper cuts.
