Tolkien Elves Clothing Headcannons

Please read: These are only my headcanons, meaning my ideas and interpretations of what Tolkien's elves would have worn based on the text, my clothing knowledge, and imagination. I am in no way claiming this is how it should be. Also I own none of the photos used in this post.

Also this is obnoxiously long and wordy, so if you skip to a section that interests you, I won't judge. I may have went ( A lot ) over bored ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Also I just want to say thank you so much for all the support I got on the post asking if I should do this, I hope it lives up to everyones expectations.

Okay so in going on this journey of research, I ran into an issue. What culture or cultures to base the clothes off of. My first thought was to have each elven group take ideas from different human cultures. Which makes sense to an extent.

I feel elves would all dress more similar than different across Tolkien’s universe. My reason for this is all the elves started out in the same place (the awakening) and were all exposed to the same things. I believe their clothing would be strongly influenced by the Valar due to Orome’s influence in the beginning and since elves are immortal this influence would not die out as generations go on (I talk about this in the trends section of this post).

If you look in human societies throughout history, they are often unified culturally, despite being far apart, by a religion and I'm applying this to elves. They would emulate the Valar’s clothing in my mind.

Okay now that I narrowed down that I want to use one culture mostly, what culture to pick? There honestly is no right answer to this I feel, but i'm going with European influence (Which is super general I know) since that is where the concept of elves originates from and Tolkien was English. Elves started making their way into stories and poetry in around the 1500s, so that gives me a general area and date to start forming my headcanon. I'm also going to take quite a lot of liberties and take influence from the Lord of the rings films, and general fantasy aesthetics as well to form these headcanons.

Fabrics

When talking about clothes the first place to start is what they are made of: the fabric. What kind of fabric would the elves use and have available to them. When coming up with this I considered two main things, One how durable the fabric is and two could elves make it.

I think durability would be extremely important to elves. According to the International textile association, the average regularly worn garment will last two to three years. Imagine how short of a time period that is to elves! This is why I believe durability would be extremely important to elves, they want something to last. especially the less wealthy elves because they can not afford constant new clothing.

I am only going to list clothing I think the elves could realistically make, so no polyester, plastic and chemical based fabrics.

Considering these two things I have come up with this list using this website as reference.

Note: We are looking at shape/Silhouette in this section, don't mind the colors or fabrics in my reference photos.

So if you study fashion history and culture at all you know the silhouette is one of the defining things of a culture and era. This brings on the question of what the Silhouette for elves would be. I think elves would share one general silhouette with similarities between the male and female silhouettes but have differences as well. This also applies to elves of different lands. They may have the same general silhouette with slightly different things.

For Elleths

For the common elleth silhouette I am going to say one thing SLEEVES. This is taking inspiration from both the LOTR movie and 1500s european paintings and fashion. long graceful sleeves is something I think would be an elven stable on formal/evening gowns. I feel there would be different styles of sleeves however the most common would be something like this. However I will say for casual work wear they would yield unhelpful.

Another thing I feel most elleth dresses would have is a waist seam. This is one thing I strongly dislike about the LOTR movie dress, a majority of the dresses at their base looks like a modern slip dress or a night gown and im not a fan. I understand this was probably a stylistic choice to represent how refined and ellagent the elves were, but to me it just looks like an ill fitted fast fashion nightgown. Here is a link to a good example photo if you want to look. Almost no dresses until the last hundred years lacked a waist seam like this. Some cultures don't have a waist seam in woman clothing but will almost always have a belt like garnet if there is no seam. And I personally think waist seemed gowns, look far more elegant. Plus 1500s european gowns all had waist seams so we are adding a waist seam.

Now the skirt, I feel it would be simple and more on the flat flowing side. No hoop skirts or bum roles for the elves. I do think in some gowns they may add some under lawyers to add volume and or warmth.

For Ellons

I actually really like the LOTR movies interruption of elven male robes for formal situations, Here is an example. I also think similar styles but shorter would be worn by either younger ellons or ellons wanting to branch out in a different style for a formal occasion. Here is an example.

For General Elves

I feel something both genders would share in their formal and non formal clothes is the use of capes in very versatile ways. The cape could have a function like keeping one warm, or just be purely for show and drastic flare as one descends from their throne *cough* Thranduil, Feanor *Cough*. Here are some examples: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.

Now onto the talk of practical clothing. No matter how graceful elves are they can not wear gowns and robes when training or horse back riding. I imagine simple slacks and tunics would be a common site among elves who do physical activities. What Legolas wears in the lord of the rings, is perfect I feel. Practical and rather similar to what humans wear. Here is the example.

Colors

I feel the elves would have clothing of all colors overall. depending on a couple things. Elves' clothing colors would be different depending on the environment and what dyes they have available in it. As well as what colors function best in an environment, so a lot of greens.

I don't think elven royals would enforce any laws that limits what colors an elf can wear depending on class like most royals throughout human history have. I do feel that certain elven houses, or elves would take on certain color themes. For example I believe Feanor and his house would wear a whole lot of reds, and blacks. While Finarfin and his house would be wearing more blues, whites and silver.

I think plant based dyes would be the most common among elves, making their clothing fall more on earthy toned down colors, opposed to bright synthetic ones we are used to (See mood board above). I do think some brighter colors could be achieved by dying a garment multiple times or using a rarer material like minerals. However I feel majorly would be as I said earthy and natural.

Embellishments

I believe elves would dabble in all forms of embellishments on their clothing, I mean they have so much time on their hands so why not? I think embroidery would probably be the most common, Little swirled designs on hems and such. Bead work probably would be reserved for more formal garments, due to it being done with crystals and gems and taking lots of time.

I think what designs elves created would mostly be inspired by nature. Different flowers, birds, and stars being the most common.

I think some elven royals would have robes glistened with sewed on diamonds and jewels, to draw attention to themselves and show status.

Environments

(Note: The way I arranged this mood board above is by environment. So Beach/tropical first row, Temperate forest middle, and snowy cold place third row.)

I feel the main thing that will be changing between different environments and temperatures is what materials they use. Fur and wool lined cloaks and robes for cold places. Light breathable fabric, decorated with sea shells for tropical beach environments. And cotton and medium warmth clothing for forests. I also feel for hunting clothing elves in forests would wear green, and in snowy areas would wear white furs.

I believe elves would still maintain the same general silhouette in different areas (Go to the Silhouette section for more details) just adding on layers and warmer fabrics in colder places.

Trends

So this section does not get a mood bored because I could not think of what that would be.

Trends are something extremely prevalent throughout human culture, often decided by those in power: Celebrities nowadays and in the past royalty. I don't think elves would have trends like we do, for two main reasons.

Reason one is as I said, trends in the past were decided by royals and oftentimes when a new royal took throne fashions would change in their image. However elven rulers don't die of old age like humans, they live forever. making the constant change of trends not occur with each new ruler because there is not a new ruler often. When there is a new ruler it is most likely extremely tragic because that means the past ruler died, and the next (Most likely a child of the old ruler ) would probably not want to cause a drastic change in clothing out of respect.

Reason two being age groups. Trends often times change as new age groups move into the prime of their life and old generations die out. However elves are immortal and don't die out. I have no doubt younger elves would dress somewhat differently but there would be no massive clothing changes, In silhouette or fabrics due to the older elves pushing back against it. As well as the elves wanting to continue emulating the Valar.

What’s your favorite scene so far from ‘Bones’? Why the Devonian period in particular? Also, when Celebrimbor first finds Sauron, he was still in the form of a pillar of flame, and wasn’t talking. But only 3 months later when Celebrimbor returns, Sauron was in a form of kind-of flesh and could sort of talk. Does this mean that Celebrimbor’s presence actually caused Sauron to start healing?

For scenes, hmm. A lot of the time my favorite bits are a couple paragraphs within a larger scene. For entire ones, I like Sauron's apology scene an awful lot. And anything with physical closeness, really.

The Devonian Period is mostly that it's my favorite. Plants invent forests and terraform the world! They create soil! They drastically change the climate! It's the first period that's recognizable as our world, different, alien, but the land was no longer a barren wasteland* there are trees! (It's Tolkien, trees are good.) *ok there were some weedy plants huddling by the water in the late Ordovician through early Devonian, but then plants go from 6 cm to 60 meters in the blink of a geological eye. And true trees, under stricter definitions, with secondary growth and single stems and height and all. (I have plans to do an image board about what Avathar looks like - there is some cool paleoart - but considering I fail at mspaint, I may just post pictures lol.)

Yeah, it was Celebrimbor's presence. Less, hmm. Less Celebrimbor as himself at first, but more something that Sauron had a sense of as a thing outside of himself: it made him just the slightest bit curious. It was Celebrimbor coming back to him that gave Sauron the tools to remember who he was (specifically Celebrimbor sharing the memory of when they first met). There's also simply talking. Sauron at one point thinks that it was language that was the final thing that solidified himself as a person. That part is headcanon, ofc, though the importance of language to Sauron is something I'm pretty attached to so when he starts to become something more than loss and rage, he starts to talk. And sounds like Gollum.

It is NOT what I planned, I wanted it to be a different place, a different time, and different characters. But when I saw a blank screen, this is what happened. It’s a bit ridiculous, but who cares, I am only learning to write. See notes at the end to find more :)

And let it be for Tolkien Gen Week. I would appreciate feedback! Just any! Critics too! (Also, English is my second language, and I’m never sure I do it right. Tell me if you see any mistake, please!)

They wandered on the shore, looking upon the long-lasting darkness of the Great Sea. Their kind had crossed it over already, and they were late and lost, and longing for both those who departed and those who were in the forests. Olwё was to be their king now, but was he to lead them farther? They did not decide yet.

Therefore, they dwelled on the shore, gazing at hissing waves at one side and great unlit land at the other. Generally scared of things and beasts in the shadows, they looked up to the skies to find comfort in the brightness of the stars.

But once, it changed. The great wave crashed to the shore with a roaring sound and shaped itself into an elven-like creature. "Maia" - someone gasped. Wave carefully stood, yet changing a little, becoming still and defined. Like an elven maid she now looked, with a small smile and a welcoming gest. Uinen she called herself.

And Uinen told them the love for the ocean with all its deep and dark waters. For they were not to fear it. Hiss of waves was music now, and they could hear it now, and make their instruments or use their voices to sing the music of the sea. Still, they did not come too far into the ocean, for its depth was too great and too unknown.

Then Ossё came. They first saw him sitting on a rock near to the margin of the land and talking with their young. From then, he told stories of sea creatures and plants, explained underwater life along with the order of waters. With understanding, the fear went away, it was not scary to learn to swim or (for some of them) even see those things Ossё talked about.

But some wanted to explore by themselves. "Teach us to go by water," an elf asked. Ossё smiled but refused.

Nendil arranged boards in an order she thought to be the right one. She knew wood floats in water, so it only needs to be reliable enough for two elves to be on it. She dreamed of beautiful devices - ships! - that could carry her anywhere, they could be a bit rounded up, so water does not get on the floor. She would like it to go by itself somehow, but from what she learned from the Sea Maiar, she needed to first find a flow to do so. So she decided to use another device, maybe, a stick, to move.

With her friend, Aearndir, they found suitable wood and instruments.

"Let's try to make it a simple, flat form for the first time," he suggested.

"We need to start with something," she sighed.

So they laid wood on the sand, simply one by one, and connected it with fine ropes. Two flattened sticks were to help them to control the thing.

The sea was calm, dark long waves hissed when crashed onto the sand and whispered when rolled back. They dragged their float near to the ocean, and then helped it to get into. Waist-deep in water, they last pushed the woods and climbed on them. Aearndir stood on one side of the float, and Nendil on another, with sticks in their hands, they shoved themselves further from the shore, at first using the sea bottom but then pushing off the water. It was hard but excitingly new.

"It goes well!" exclaimed Nendil.

Aearndir did not answer. Instead, he started to push harder, wanting to get as far away as they could and see what is there.

At last, they both grew tired and seated themselves on the floor.

"The land is so far away, I can hardly see it," Nendil sounded troubled. She did not want to get lost in the endless smoothness of seawaters. "We should get back, I think."

"In a few minutes. Don't you like the sight?" Aearndir, on the other side of a float, seemed delighted. Indeed, the expanse looked great. Smooth black water was perfectly still this time, and they could see the stars in it almost as clearly as they were in the sky. Nendil moved to the edge of the float. Her tired face smiled at her from the water.

"Alright, let's get back," sighed Aearndir in a few minutes.

"Next time we will make a rounded ship," claimed Nendil and took her stick. "We should call these things 'an oar'. “

Notes: sooo… The Silmarillion says that Ossё taught them both sea-lore and sea-music. I decided to change that. It also says that Ulmo somehow made elves who were on the shore to love the sea instead of fear it. But, if I understood it right, Teleri were not there at the moment, so I made them still afraid of it a bit.

As I said, I did not plan any of it at all. The second part came to be when I was rereading some chapters to understand how things worked, and (wrote this post), and thought that it’s just strange to tell them sea-things but not to teach them to make ships. Maybe, just maybe, there was something strange with the wind at the moment (that’s why I made them use oars), but that is not so much of a problem, they could have boats without sails. However it was, I decided that if Noldor can be crafty, then Teleri can too.

And they don’t hust live on a shore. I wanted to include it somewhere but did not find a good place. They have a city of course!

Social Distancing Book Recs

I’ve been getting tons of book recommendations from friends and family to help get through social distancing/self-quarantine, so I thought I should share some of my favorite books with everybody!

Horror/Apocalyptic: *all books are ADULT*

- The Stand by Stephen King “This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. - House of Leaves by Mark Z. Comedy:

- Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett “People have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be skeptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day. But what if, for once, the predictions are right, and the apocalypse really is due to arrive next Saturday, just after tea? You could spend the time left drowning your sorrows, giving away all your possessions in preparation for the rapture, or laughing it off as (hopefully) just another hoax. Or you could just try to do something about it. It’s a predicament that Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon now finds themselves in. - Dad Is Fat by Jim Gaffigan *PG-13* Dad is Fat is a comedic memoir that details Jim Gaffigan’s life growing up in a large Catholic family to his experiences as a husband and father (specifically parenting his five young children while living in a tiny walk-up apartment in New York). I highly recommend the audiobook (which is narrated by Jim Gaffigan), my family and I always listen to it during road trips. It never stops being funny.

- Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings by The Harvard Lampoon *ADULT* “A quest, a war, a ring that would be grounds for calling any wedding off, a king without a kingdom, and a little, furry ‘hero’ named Frito, ready -- or maybe just forced by the wizard of Goodgulf-- to undertake the one mission which can save Lower Middle Earth from enslavement by the evil Sorhed… Luscious Elfmaidens, a roller-skating dragon, ugly plants that can soul-kiss the unwary to death-- these are just some of the ingredients in the wildest, wackiest, most irreverent excursion into fantasy realms that anyone has ever dared to undertake” (Goodreads summary).

Middle-Grade:

- Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan (book 1: The Lightning Thief) “Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends-- one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena-- Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods” (Goodreads summary).

- The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan (book 1: The Lost Hero) “Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper, and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for ‘bad kids.’ What id Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly? Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare about his being in trouble. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits during the school trip, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out. - The Children of the Red King series by Jenny Nimmo (book 1: Midnight for Charlie Bone) “Charlie Bone has a special gift-- he can hear people in photographs talking! The fabulous powers of the Red King were passed down through his descendants, after turning up quite unexpectedly, in someone who had no idea where they came from. This is what happened to Charlie Bone, and to some of the children he met behind the grim, gray walls of Bloor’s Academy. - Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements “Bobby Phillips is an average fifteen-year-old boy. Until the morning he wakes up and can’t see himself in the mirror. Not blind, not dreaming. Bobby is just plain invisible... There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to Bobby’s new conditions; even his dad the physicist can’t figure it out. Science Fiction:

- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick *Adult* “It was January 2021, and Rick Deckard had a license to kill. Somewhere among the hordes of humans out there, lurked several rogue androids. Deckard’s assignment-- find them and then... ‘retire’ them. Trouble was, the androids all looked exactly like humans, and they didn’t want to be found!” (Goodreads summary).

- Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton * Suitable for Young Adults* “An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now humankind’s most thrilling fantasies have come true. Fantasy:

- The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman *ADULT* (book 1: The Magicians) “Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he’s still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery. Castle in the Sky: If you could live in any fictional place what would it be? (laputa, atlantis, narnia etc.)

hmmm... hmmmmmm.... honestly, i would love to live in idris (from shadowhunters/the shadowhunter chronicles.. not sure if it was ever in the show?) because the way that it’s described... the fields... the forests... the aesthetic (women in long skirts but still wielding weapons???? stfu). the shadow world itself would be amazing to be a part of, and i’d like to think that with training i could actually survive, but haha aNYWAYS i’d love to learn about demonology, about the dead languages. I would love to have a travel year and visit another institue and learn about culture and customs. I would love to learn to wield different weapons??? also like, the existence of the fae and warlocks and vampires and werrwovles... yknow, young adult fantasy stuff lmaooo.

Secret World of Arrietty: Tell me about the most beautiful place you have ever been.

I’m rather sure I saw something recently that made me think, wow, this is the most beautiful thing i’ve seen. but i can’t recall it. darn. hm, but seriously thinking... i’m not sure. i’ve always found beauty in the night sky, and that’s.. well, that’s everywhere, no? oh! but an actual place - at the beginning of this year (early feb) i went on a cruise, and there was a spa there for 18+. not that it was an adult spa, just that it was supposed to be a place for adults to get away from all the kids on board...? hm. well, it was a physically beautiful place - it was at the front of the ship, and was almost like a greenhouse - glass domed roof all around the front, and i think if there were less lights inside, you could see the stars. but there were lights - warm yellows, purples and blues. I don’t know how they did it, but the purple and blue lights really worked well w the yellow to create such a nice atmosphere. The spas were in the middle front, and a bar was at the back. there were all these trees - palm trees are the only ones i can name (sigh) but ther ewere so many plants. everything looked so nice and it was very empty at night, so it was the most calming and relaxing thing to go at night. my description does this no justice, but gosh it was so good and just being there was so calming. the question doesn’t ask this but the place was also really nice because i could talk with my cousins and bond more??? er. i swear it’s so much nicer than i’m making it out to be. (i wanted to answer this q with this place but i’ve talked about this place in another ask meme game thing before sigh)

Jan 1. National Hangover Day: What’s the worst hangover that you’ve ever had? The one after the last night I ever drank. That night was horrible. I got so sick and it was embarrassing and ugh it just ended up ruining the rest of the night. I still trip out because I honestly don’t recall drinking that much, but I got really drunk. I guess the drinking games made me lose track or something. Thank goodness for my best friend at the time who took care of me. I couldn’t really sleep that night cause I got sick a few times and just felt like shit and the rest of the day I just did absolutely nothing. I didn’t even want to look at alcohol for awhile.

National Bloody Mary Day: Do you believe in the Bloody Mary folklore? No, but I still don’t mess around with that kind of stuff.

Euro Day: Do you have any Euros? No.

National Black Eyed Peas Day: Do you like listening to the Black Eyed Peas? How about eating them? The group was cool, I liked a few of their songs. I’ve never had actual black eyed peas.

Apple Gifting Day: What’s your favorite type of apple – red, yellow, or green? I’m not an apple gal. Well, when it comes to the fruit. I love Apple products haha.

New Year’s Day: How did you celebrate New Year’s? My mom had to work until 11PM and my brother was at a friend’s house and was spending the night, so it was just my dad and I. We got takeout and watched the New Year’s Eve shows, but he ended up falling asleep a couple hours before midnight. My mom got home just in time to watch some of the New Year’s Eve shows before midnight and then we watched the ball drop, so at least I wasn’t alone. My dad slept right through it lol. It was a very chill night.

Jan 2. National Buffet Day: Where’s the best buffet in your area? The only buffet I liked was Mongolian BBQ. You put your noodles, meats, veggies, toppings, and sauces yourself and then they cooked it right in front of you on a big, round, super hot grill, so I felt comfortable consuming it. Other buffets where the food is brought out for everyone to have access to... yeah, no thanks.

World Introvert Day: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert? Oh, I’m an introvert all the way.

Swiss Cheese Day: What meat do you typically eat Swiss cheese with? Ya know, I don’t think I’ve ever had Swiss cheese.

National Joygerm Day: How do you treat people with kindness? Do you typically have a positive attitude about things? I try to be understanding and openminded, I try to be a good listener, I don’t put people down or belittle others, I try not to be rude or impolite, and I try to help if I can. I don’t have a positive outlook when it comes to myself, but I can for others. We could even have the same issue and I’ll be able to see it differently for them than I do for myself. I’m forgiving when it comes to others and I’ll see the good in them, truly believing it, but I beat myself up all the time.

National Winter Skin Relief Day: What do you treat your skin/lips with, when they are chapped? Ugh, I have that issue in the summer as well it’s so annoying. Anyway, I just use lotion and chapstick. I don’t use it as often as I should, though, for some reason. It would definitely help. I should also use a face moisturizer.

Jan 9. National Apricot Day: Do you prefer apricots dried, in fresh fruit form, or the canned version? I don’t like apricots at all.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day: Do you have issues with people of authority? I have an issue with the bad ones who abuse their power.
