Ukaku ghouls need to be preened, just like birds do. It's a common way to show affection for them, having your loved one sit behind you and making you feel nice and fresh again. Ingrown projectiles acting as pin feathers and kagune shards stuck in places they shouldn't be. It gets a bit stuffy and stiff when going without grooming for awhile, even when the kagune isn't actually out. Signs of this are reoccurring shivers, upper back pain, and tender soreness around the sight.

"I am a mother of seven children. My youngest is an infant in need of milk and diapers, and my four-year-old son has diabetes, relying daily on insulin to survive. I had to leave my husband behind to care for his sick father and fled with my children in search of safety. But even here, safety does not mean a dignified life or basic needs.
Have you ever watched your children suffer and felt powerless? Heard your baby cry from hunger with nothing to feed them? If you live in comfort and safety, maybe it’s time to ask: have I done enough to help those truly in need? A small act of mercy from you could bring our children hope."
Everyone, I hope you know that, it was never a trend to begin with, the lives of many Palestinians being at risk due to a Zionist state that has been trying to wipe them out was never a trend to begin with. Those people dying and suffering in Palestine are real. And it's HORRIBLE to see that the majority of the people have stopped caring about this big problem going on because apparently no more light is shed on the topic anymore.
So please, if you have morals, if you have human decency and common sense, then you would willingly help those who are suffering and stand with them. Even if you can't donate, the least you could do is bring awareness to this. Tell other people you know about it. And if you were able to do more than just bring awareness, then donation is also good.
Help out Amal. She is a mother who has been seeing her children suffering in different ways under different conditions, and she even had to leave her husband behind to take care of his sick father. The least you could do is bring awareness by reblogging or whatever way you could do that's helpful.

Do you think ghouls have to be careful with bandages because their bodies would fuse with them or grow overtop of them if the wound was bad enough?

for the tg head canons
Thank you! Why did I get so many 1's you all know my favorite critter is Furuta and I know most of you hate him (fairly) but I'll take it.
1. His whole thing is kind of just layering himself in caricatures full of the hypocrisy he finds so evident in those surrounding him while simultaneously mocking and irritating them despite how arguably he's exactly within the lines set for whatever position he's placed in. Hence the swing from compliant yet cowardly subordinate, to annoying, overconfident and toxically masculine V agent, and so on and so forth. That's a lot of words, allow me to summarize: Nimura's functionally intentionally ticking off everyone at once, but technically he's always the ideal person for whatever role it is. The Washuu King Kichimura is much the same because arguably he's the culmination of everything they wanted in a Bureau Director. He's commanding, intimidating, he's charismatic, he's terrifyingly efficient and if it was actually his intention I have no doubt he could've wiped ghouls off the face of Tokyo but it's not, and no one actually likes him because they're not supposed to. He plays the perfect role not because it's what he wants, but because that's how he shows how truly disgusting those people are. He's efficient but he completely lacks morals and boundaries, he's very masculine and commanding but effeminate and ridiculous in a conflict, he's intimidating but he's so evidently taking none of this seriously, dressing up in a ridiculous costume and calling it a party because really that's what the CCG does, it dresses up the atrocities so that no one has to feel uncomfortable about it. Kichimura dresses up the atrocities so that you feel uncomfortable about the present ones, and have to start thinking about the ones of the past- though it's kind of a thing that works only in retrospect because I imagine all the investigators were a little too focused on "Oh my god what is this guy doing" to realize it was exactly what they've been doing from the start cranked up to 100. All this to say it would be entirely in character of post-clown siege arc Nimura to wear heels and the added height would make a good distinction from the meek persona of Rank 1 Furuta. I REST MY CASE!
Also this is less of a headcanon and more of a thought which is why I'm sticking it here, but I find it hilarious that he's not actually that much taller than I. Can't even joke about biting his shins because I know multiple 14 year olds taller than this man. 2. You didn't specify a character so random person it is! Uta and Itori made use of Uta's kagune disguising ability to pretend to be a pair of famous food critics they ate once upon a time, and it started as a joke but they're in way too deep to back out now. They give the wildest reviews you've ever heard, but as long as they dodge around describing actual flavors and just talk about the feeling people eat their stupid fabrications up, and they find it hysterical. They've singlehandedly demolished the reputation of 3 perfectly respectable restaurants out of boredom and they don't even know what steak actually tastes like, they're beasts unleashed having the time of their lives. 4. Ship unspecified... Mutsukanae? Mutsukanae. Sometimes the two just collapse upon each other after a long day and wrap each other in a spiky, tangled mix of Bikaku and Rinkaku and pass out for an hour. They will not be moving, do not disturb them. 9. Probably just rampant projection but Seidou feel very ADHD ish to me. I have more thoughts on this but I'm too tired to explain it and I don't want to seem like I'm just slapping it on so ambiguous reasoning it is! 12. Kagune cloning and facial copying exists as a byproduct of extremely advanced aggressive mimicry (when a predator acts like the prey animal, or the prey animal's food source so as to catch them off guard) only certain ghouls are capable of the process by nature and they're considered powerful to a fault, however a large number of the already very small portion of ghoul capable of this will go their entire lives without knowing, because their parents were killed before they could be taught how to do so, and/or they simply don't have access to the RC needed to make a branching puppet and then separate it from their main body. If you manage to get yourself to that point in the first place however, (such as Uta) you're pretty much never going to have an issue reaching it again because one ghoul with that many RC cells in their system is formidable enough, but if you're your own hunting party have pity to the poor souls deemed dinner. But such a ghoul comes around so scarcely and leaves so few survivors that it's not even acknowledged by the CCG. Ghouls without this evolutionary advantage occasionally still practice a rudimentary form of it, so people are often cautioned against chasing after a child's silhouette in an alleyway if it looks a little awkward, as there's always a chance it's really a bikaku's tail or something.

What is a Ghoul?
Ghouls (喰種グール, gūru, translates approximately to eater species) are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species that are only able to feed on the flesh of humans and other ghouls. They normally share and display the same attributes as Humans; being similar in physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the main exceptions being their inner biology, mentality, and diet.
Due to their status as predators of humans, ghouls are prosecuted by The CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul).
DIET A ghoul can only feed on humans and other ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues is also different from that of humans, making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable. If ghouls attempt to eat normal food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit. When forced or forcing themselves to digest such food, their physical condition will deteriorate. While ghouls cannot eat normal food, they are however able to drink coffee (and eat the beans), as well as regular drinking water.
Ghouls do not need to eat regularly like humans do. They can survive for one or two months on just one body. However, some ghouls eat merely for pleasure.
When a ghoul enters an extreme state of hunger, they will suffer very painful headaches and their mental ability will be impaired, causing them to become driven by instinct alone. They will feed on any available source of human meat to end this state. Ghouls have described this state of near-starvation as, "hell for any ghoul".
[TL;DR — Ghouls eat humans and other ghouls. They can't eat normal human food or they'll feel immediately sick, but they can drink coffee, eat coffee beans, and drink water. Ghouls can survive on one human for one or two months, though extreme hunger is agonising.]
GHOUL BIOLOGY Ghouls possess extreme physical capabilities, and are four to seven times stronger than the average human; they are able to send the average human flying if struck with enough force, and can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands. Ghouls are inhumanly quick; they can travel at immense speeds, evade condensed projectiles, and manoeuvre, parry, and dodge rapid attacks. They are also capable of jumping to heights not achievable by a regular human. Their agility and balance are similarly great; they're often shown performing various acrobatic feats during combat and casually manoeuvring on narrow surfaces (such as lamp-posts); some are even shown easily running up or across vertical surfaces.
Their bodies are extremely tough and resistant to injury. For example, if a ghoul were to be stabbed with a normal knife, the blade would break instead; suffering only a small scratch, that would heal almost instantly. However, higher kinetic forces, such as a fall from a great height, can and will harm them.
A Ghoul’s senses are considerably sharper than those of humans; they have a heightened sense of hearing that allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away, they can also smell people or meat from afar, and tell humans and ghouls apart by their scent.
[TL;DR — Ghouls are significantly stronger than humans, and inhumanely quick, have superior balance and agility, and are extremely tough and resistant to injury. Regular weapons do minimal harm to them (if they were to be stabbed by a knife, the knife would break), and all injuries heal almost instantly. A fall from a significant height would damage them though. They also have heightened senses of smell and hearing.]
Ghoul Terms
RC CELLS Rc (Red Children) cells (Rc細胞, Rc saibō) are certain cells that exist only in the story of Tokyo Ghoul. The origin of the name comes from how each individual cell looks like a curled up fetus. They exist in both humans and ghouls. They flow like blood but can become as solid as teeth, and could be called "liquid muscles". Typically, a ghoul stocks Rc cells by eating people. Within the body, the Rc cells are concentrated and stored in a kakuhou. The kagune is formed by Rc cells that have been released from a kakuhou and have pierced through the skin.
The Rc factor is a measure for the amount of Rc cells in the body of a living being. Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than humans. If, for whatever reason, a normal human receives an excessive amount of Rc cells, such as through experiments, they will start to develop ghoul-like characteristics and eventually not be able to consume human food. This can lead to the creation of a half-ghoul, or a one-eyed ghoul.
[TL;DR — Cells that both ghouls and humans have (made up) that can be in liquid or solid form. Stored in the kakuhou (ghoul organ), and when released, form the kagune. Ghouls replenish Rc cells by eating humans. Ghouls have more Rc cells than humans, but if a human were to experience an increase in Rc cells, they would develop ghoul characteristics.]
KAKUHOU A kakuhou (赫包, kakuhō, approximately red wrap) is a sac-like organ that is only present in ghouls. The purpose of the kakuhou is to store Rc cells. The nutrition contained in the Rc cells are absorbed by the ghoul. These cells are transported to the kakuhou in the blood and stored inside.
The Rc cells can be released from the kakuhou piercing the skin either consciously or due to excitement. These released cells form the kagune. A damaged Kakuhou can not form a kagune until it has healed.
(There are no images of this, use your imagination.)
[TL;DR — An organ only ghouls have that stores their Rc cells. This organ allows the Rc cells to be released from the body and form a kagune.]
KAGUNE A kagune (赫子, red child) is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood (the colours are varied in the anime to distinguish the kagune of each individual), flexible like the flow of water, but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient, and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles." The Rc cells are released from a kakuhou piercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. The kagune are voluntary muscles as ghouls can control them whenever they want and repeatedly harden and soften them at will. Kagune size depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user.
Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune. Hence, ghoul investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls.
(See below for kagune types.)
[TL;DR — Ghoul weapon made from Rc cells. A kagune has the ability to be flexible while still being solid and sturdy. Ghouls become stronger when their kagune is released. Ghouls can control their kagune at will. While ghouls can heal rapidly, they heal slower if the injury was caused by a kagune.]
Ghoul Types
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc type of the ghoul. There are four different Rc types: ukaku, koukaku, rinkaku, and bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristically subdue another type, although it may be different for two specific opponents. Each Rc type has a set of strengths and weaknesses, each one unique to its type.
UKAKU An ukaku kagune (羽赫, ukaku, "feather-red") is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area.
Specializes in high speed attacks
Lightweight
Primary method of attack - high speed, torrent-like projectiles
Able to use as a shield
Suited for short-distance and long-distance attacks
However, short-range is considered their weakness
Ukaku type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time
Ayato Kirishima
KOUKAKU A koukaku kagune (甲赫, kōkaku, "shell-red") is released below the shoulder blade.
Extremely heavy and robust
Well suited for defence
Generally shaped into armour or shields
Can be shaped into melee weapons such as blades
Inferior speed due to weight
Difficult to wield
Tsukiyama Shuu
RINKAKU A rinkaku kagune (鱗赫, rinkaku, "scale-red") has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist.
Users of this type have powerful regenerative albilities
Able to survive critical damage
Superior striking power
Excel in brute strength
Some users are able to manipulate the shape of this kagune such as forming into swords/blades or claws
This kagune is very soft and easy to break
Able to create between 1-8 scaled tentacles
Kaneki Ken
BIKAKU A bikaku kagune (尾赫, bikaku, "tail-red") typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tail-bone/coccyx.
Good for medium-distance attacks
Decent offence, defence and speed
No notable strengths or weaknesses
The number of tails a bikaku user can create is usually one, but some can create more.
Nishiki Nishio
Ghoul Lifestyle
Ghouls had two choices of lifestyle: living as hermits; isolated and avoiding society's eyes, or attempt to assimilate into human society.
IDENTITY If caught in ghoul activities or suspected of being a ghoul, CCG Investigators have the right to apprehend or kill them as they see fit. Ghouls that are identified could be hunted down like criminals as per the Ghoul Countermeasures Law. As such, ghouls act discreetly or try to hide their faces when engaging in ghoul activities by wearing masks.
Ghouls in Tokyo, in particular, developed a trend of wearing masks to hide their faces, making the mask the identifying feature instead of their face, some even forming gangs based on their masked identity. Since the ghouls are only identifiable by their masks, they are safe so long as their face is not exposed.
HUNTING Ghouls can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. However, they must make themselves throw up soon afterward, or they will become sick.
Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to, "hunting grounds" on which it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul, as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Some groups of ghouls can provide human meat for those that prefer not to hunt for themselves. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscriminately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume.
❯ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗖𝗚 (𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹)
Who are the CCG?
The Commission of Counter Ghoul (喰種対策局 Gūru Taisaku Kyoku, literally "Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau"), usually abbreviated as CCG シーシージー (Shīshījī), is a federal agency in the Tokyo Ghoul series that serves as a criminal investigative body in cases connected to ghouls.
The Ghoul Countermeasures Law was the legal foundation for the CCG's prosecution of ghouls. The CCG's headquarters are in the 1st Ward.
The ghouls commonly call the ghoul investigators Doves (白鳩ハト, Hato), a nickname originating from the CCG's seal.
Initially, the CCG utilized firearms to oppose ghouls, which proved ineffective due to their physique. After a certain period of time, the organization, developed a new weapon to battle ghouls, the quinque, which was derived from the ghouls' kagune. The ghoul extermination rate increased rapidly thanks to that weapon, and it is the desired weapon of choice to the investigators.
INVESTIGATORS CCG employs two different kinds of investigators:
Ghoul investigators, employed at CCG's main office, carry out the actual investigations and capture suspects. They are often assigned to carry out investigations in one of Tokyo's wards. Only ghoul investigators are permitted to be armed with quinques.
Bureau investigators deal mostly with paperwork and back up ghoul investigators when necessary. Most of them are employed at CCG's branch offices. They are armed with firearms loaded with Q bullets.
CCG Investigator Terms
QUINQUE A quinque (クインケ, kuinke) is a weapon manufactured from a ghoul's kakuhou used by CCG ghoul investigators. The quinque emits electrical signals that stimulate the kakuhou to release and control it. They can be made into types of melee or ranged weapon, but most retain a few characteristics from the original kagune. In contrast to kagune, quinque cannot change shape nor store or absorb Rc cells other than what was harvested from the ghoul it was made from.
(that fourth image is so fucking bad I'm crying please TG anime remake I'm begging)
RATING Ratings are a system used by the Commission of Counter Ghoul to classify ghouls with respect to their perceived individual ability and threat level.
Ghouls are rated based upon various factors, including their basic strengths, activity levels, influence and hostility towards investigators. There are six rating levels, from SSS (the most powerful) to C (the weakest). In some cases, a tilde (~) is added to the base rating. This indicates that the ghoul is estimated to be at least that strong, but the rating may change once more is known about the subject.
SSS rated - Criteria is unclear. SS rated - Multiple Special Class Investigators are needed. S+ rated - Equivalent to the ability of an average Special Class Investigator. (approx.) S- rated - Equivalent to the ability of an average Associate Special Class Investigator. (approx.) A rated - Comparable to a First Class Investigator. These ghouls are usually set as a target and some ghouls might develop a second tail/tentacle. B rated - Comparable to a Rank 1 to Rank 3 Investigator. These ghouls should have their Kagune mastered and are usually a small threat to the CCG. C rated - Ghouls of smaller ability, these ghouls usually can't fight any ghoul investigators and only attack unarmed humans.
In addition to the ghoul's individual ability, the actual damage caused by the ghoul is also evaluated. The rating is set in consideration of the predation and killing incidents committed by the ghoul.
For some ghouls, their influence over other ghouls is also taken into account when ratings are given.
CCG Investigator Ranks
Usually, ghoul investigators were instructed at and graduated from the CCG's Ghoul Investigator Training Academy. When they enter the CCG, they begin their career as Rank 2 investigators.
New ghoul investigators are typically partnered with a senior investigator or join a squad to continue their training on the job.
SENIOR INVESTIGATORS
Special Class Investigator: The highest possible rank, achieved by the smallest percentage of investigators. They are considered the strongest of all investigators, and typically command operations as well as oversee the daily running of their assigned wards. Associate Special Class Investigator: Also known as assistant special investigators. The second highest rank, achieved by a small percentage of investigators. They possess the authority to command operations or oversee individual wards as necessary. First Class Investigator: Also known as Senior Investigator, with most investigators achieving this rank later in their career. It is typical for an investigator to retire at this rank, and their responsibilities are typically training a junior partner. Very few investigators move beyond this rank, and reaching it before their thirties is considered the mark of an exceptional investigator.
JUNIOR INVESTIGATORS
Rank 1 Investigator: Also known as second class, The highest rank for a junior investigator, having gained experience but not yet at the peak of their career. On average, Rank 1 investigators are around twenty-seven years old when they are promoted. Rank 2 Investigator: Also known as third class, This is the rank at which almost all ghoul investigators begin their career, after graduating from the Ghoul Investigator Training Academy. Rank 3 Investigator: Bureau investigators begin their career at this rank. Ghoul investigators who begin their career at this rank are "special cases," made investigators without formal training at the Training Academy.

What is a Ward?
Tokyo is divided into 24 wards. I think the best equivalent would be London boroughs or New York City boroughs.
NOTABLE WARDS
The 2nd Ward
This is where the main character of NTG is from.
The CCG has a large presence here due to its proximity to the 1st Ward. It is almost impossible for ghouls to live here.
It borders the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th wards.
The 13th Ward
This is where the story of NTG is set.
It has been described that this ward has experienced so much bloodshed, it's scary even for ghouls.
It borders with the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th wards.

Centipede file: Half-Ghouls and Half-Kakujas
Ghouls are creatures that predate exclusively on humans and other ghouls. While they resemble humans, ghouls and humans are two separate species with different biology, physiology, diets and mentality. It is possible., however, to create hybrids either through natural offspring (this is an extremely rare situation) or by having ghoul organs transplanted onto humans.
Kaneki is a half-ghoul, half-human, retaining mostly ghoul characteristic
Anatomy
RC cells and RC cells vessels
In the world of Tokyo Ghoul a specific type of cell exists, the Red Children cell or RC cell. These cells flow through the body with blood (in humans) or in specialized RC Cell Vessels (in ghouls) and they can become solid when they bind together (the vessels are usually called "RC Cell Pathways"). They exist on both humans and ghouls, however ghouls have a higher amount and can store them in specialized organs that are interconnected by the vessels. These cells are what give the ghouls all their abilities.
Kakuhou
Ghouls have a sac-like internal organ that stores and concentrates RC cells, located on the on the back, and this is what was transferred onto Kaneki and what turned him into a Half-Ghoul. According to the specific location the back and the kagune formed from there, the Kakuhou is given a specific name: shoulder area (called ukaku-type), below the shoulder blade (koukaku-type), by the waist (rinkaku-type) or at the tailbone (bikaku-type). It’s also possible for a ghoul to have more than one Kakuhou. Kaneki’s kahuhou is located by the waist, so he is a rinkaku-type.
Kagune
It's a predatory organ, however it's not always present. It takes shape thanks to the RC cells stored in the Kakuhou: whenever the ghoul needs this organ, they bind together, harden and then pierce through the Kakuhou and skin and become external. The ghoul may decide if they wish for the kagune to remain softened (it looks similar to a flame or water) or hardened (which is what is used in order to attack/defend). Generally speaking, kagunes can't be cut/destroyed by anything other than kagunes and one type of kagune can be defeated by another specific kagune type.
Kagunes are used as defense and offense. As they are physical "limbs" that can virtually cut through most materials, and ghouls can use it to fight each other, fight Ghoul Investigators and of course kill their victims. Depending on the kagune's shape, they can use it as extra limbs (hands or legs) or as shields. Imagine a weird shaped sword that comes out of someone's back and it has amazing mobility (the whole "liquid muscle" thing), and it can kill you. Kagunes are capable of changing form and size according to the user's strength and imagination, which called kagune manipulation. At this stage, kaneki is quite capable at this.
Kagunes can have special abilities (such as creating electricity or fire, detaching themselves, being reshaped into weird forms) and what each can do will depend on each kagune’s form. Kaneki’s kagune can grip things while Touka’s can’t, but Touka can form projectiles from her kagune, while Kaneki’s can’t.
Kaneki’s rinkaku looks like three red-scaled tentacles with a scary striking power (it excels at brute strength), which makes it capable of winning against the defensive power of the koukaku thanks to the force of its strikes, but it’s weak against bikaku, that also has great strength but it’s less breakable. Indeed, while a rinakku’s has extreme strength and the RC cells bind together with much ease, the binding force among them is weak and that makes the kagune fragile; that means enough force can indeed break Kaneki’s kagune (a punch will not, but metal beams falling on it will). Kaneki’s kagune is covered in scales, which can move usually in sync; these scales can remain flattened but also “flare up”.
Kagunes do not bleed, but can be destroyed. With enough impact, the RC Cells bound together will break apart, causing the kagune to vanish. This will look like the kagune is actually fading away and turning into dust because as the cells unbind, the structure disappears until only individual cells (which are invisible to the naked eye) are left.
Kakugan
When a ghoul’s RC cells react (even if the kagune isn’t released; it could be excitement, hunger or just threatening), the ghoul's eye turn red, the sclera turns black and red veins across the eye and into the skin around the eye. Kaneki only has one reactive eye because he is a half-ghoul.
Physiology
Strenght
A ghoul is much stronger than a human, able to send them flying if hit with enough strength. By using their bare hands, a ghoul can penetrate the human body, and with just a bite – even through the clothes – they are able to rip out the human flesh just as easily. However, an extremely strong human can still face off a ghoul as long the ghoul isn’t using their kagune. Roughly, a ghoul can be compared to the strength of about 9-10 men. Kaneki is extremely strong, and he can match ghouls that are considered "most dangerous".
Speed and reflexes
Speed and reflexes are also enhanced. While Ukakus are known for their extra speed, the other ghouls can still be must faster, jump much higher, and havemuch more balance than a regular human. With their agility and muscle strength, they can jump several meters high, as well as land from a big fall without much of a problem.
Natural resistance and healing
Ghouls can take critical hits and still survive and some even keep going. kaneki is known for his endurance and ability to withstand a lot of pain and torture, such as 10 days of being cut and broken by a crazy ghoul.
It's thanks to their regeneration, also strength, and of course the RC cells, a ghoul's skin cannot be pierce by much; a gunshot to the head will not work. Ghouls have a tougher body than most regular solid materials and are capable to withstand them.Only materials as strong as their skin (or stronger) can do so, or a strong enough force (like metal bars falling on top of a ghoul from huge heights, that can kill them). Membranes, however – such as the eyes, lips, nostrils (and the rest…) can be easily pierced and there are even laboratory-created products that can block the RC cells binding, which renders the ghoul's abilities null.
Ghouls also have regeneration abilities thanks to their RC cells as well, that travel from the Kakuhou to the wound through the vessels/pathways (or, in a half-ghoul's case, new pathways are created as they pass through the body). Small wounds and fractures heal in a matter of hours to a day and grave wounds heal after a few days, as long as a ghoul has adequate food supply. However, wounds caused by kagunes take much longer to heal and may eventually be fatal; the same goes for a ghoul bite. Kaneki has a huge regenerative ability due to his kagune type; rinkakus rely greatly on their regenerative abilities thanks to Rc cells that easily bind together. However, once again, his regeneration also comes from the RC pathways, as they are continuously being created whenever he gets hurt (more information on this under the hybrid section).
Senses
Finally, they have heighten senses. Kaneki not so much, but many ghouls are seen capable of smelling people from big distances, hearing them to the point of being able to pinpoint details such as size and exact location, or even see better at night. While kaneki can certainly smell everything better than a human (since most things smell awful to him, thanks to not being able to eat most thing - except humans), he still isn't amazing at it. It can be trained, however.
Ghouls are unable to smell anything that is not human or ghoul or coffee. Anything that doesn't fall under those specific categories smells extremely bad, although ghouls are known for still wearing perfume and similar, in order to fit with human society.
Special abilities
A ghoul may possess unique abilities thanks to their kagune and RC Cells. The reason why it happens is unknown, but it seems to be related to high concentrations of RC cells. These abilities include Pseudo-Electrokinesis, Pseudo-Pyrokinesis, Shapeshifting, healing or even detaching the kagune itself; Kaneki's ability is Kagune Manipulation: kaneki is able to control the size, shape, form, feel and sturdiness of his kagune at will. This allows Kaneki to grow several tendrils if needed and and command the tentacles to process different tasks at once. He is also noted to have a better control over his kagune than natural-born ghouls which is ultimately due to his kagune manipulation ability.
He has shown to be able to form "wings", claws, hands, they can even form a springs, blades, body armour and cages. In the last part of the manga, Kaneki was seen literally replacing all of his body (full body, from head down) with his kagune to allow him to stay alive under dire circumstances, which means Kaneki can reach a point where his Kagune manipulation will be so extreme that the kagune will allow him to survive fatal blows.
Diet
A ghoul can only eat and digest humans due to an enzyme their body produces. In other words, anything coming from a human is used as nutrients, but nothing else can, leaving ghouls with little choice of diet habits. Thanks to their taste buds, anything that doesn't come from humans will taste really bad to a ghoul, enough that they'll have the urge to vomit, and can even make a ghoul ill if often consumed. The only exception to this is coffee (either brewed or not), however it's still unknown why.
A ghoul doesn't have to consume food as often as humans. One body is enough for a ghoul for about one-two months, however, many ghouls find pleasure in hunting and killing, thus they become avid eaters with no regards for human life. In return, starvation is hell, and it can drive one mad and take all of their reason away. A hungry ghoul might even feast on their friends and they rely simply on their instinct to find food and eat it; indeed, cannibalism can also occur.
While the flesh of another ghoul will taste awful (just like any non-human nutrient), they are able to digest it without the downside of human food. By cannibalizing another ghoul, they absorb the victim’s RC cells and it increases the concentration of them within the attacker. If repeated often, this eventually leads to mutate the RC cells of the attack and the kagune takes a new shape with increased power. The ghouls with a mutate kagune as result of cannibalism are called kakujas.
Hybrids
Hybrids between ghouls and humans are possible due to genetic compatibility of the two species. Hybrids are called One Eyed Ghouls or Half-Ghouls and they are often treated as an urban legend. They are easily recognizable due to only having one active Kakugan. These beings have a unique scent that combines traits of a human and a ghoul, which can be considered inciting and delicious to many ghouls, however only ghouls with a keen sense of smell can tell Kaneki is human, and often he is told he smells of a female ghoul. Their flesh and blood is also noted to be particularly delicious, making them a potential target for cannibalism. One Eyed Ghouls are more powerful than ordinary ghouls, which explains Kaneki's above normal regeneration and kagune manipulation. Most individuals are able to develop their abilities and kagune drastically within a short period of time.
Artificial vs Natural Born Half-Ghouls
Hybrids come into existence through two methods: normally born as a result of the union between a ghoul and a human or through transplanting a kakuhou into a human host. Both cases are extremely rare and the chances of each situation happening are very low, however both are still possible. Kaneki Ken had Rize's kakuhou transplanted onto him and he was the very first subject able to survive, often called "Miracle Human" by the doctor who created this technique and performed the surgery. It is confirmed subjects who undergo this procedure have a shorter lifespan, which means Kaneki will most likely not live as long as a regular human or ghoul. Natural born Half-Ghouls are able to consume regular human food, as well humans and ghouls, however Artificial Half-Ghouls gain most ghoul characteristics, including their specialized diet and inability to taste/smell anything that is not human or ghoul.
RC cells pathways
RC cells travel through a ghoul's body using specialized vessels; when born, a ghoul contains a specific hereditary map of these vessels which allow the RC cells to travel through the body of a ghoul and in some cases, these vessels can be developed to grow bigger thus allowing the RC cells to be used faster and more efficiently. However, half-ghouls are not born with any vessels at all and as such, they create it as they get hurt and/or the body requires RC cells. This is why Half-Ghouls are stronger than most ghouls: each time their body requires RC Cells, new RC Cell vessels are formed through the body. This means every time Kaneki gets physically hurt, new vessels form, and thus stronger he becomes and faster his regeneration ability is. Once created, these pathways are permanent.
Although pathways may not be created yet, it's heavily implied they slowly form themselves and can be trained. This is the reason why Kaneki still had ghoul strength even though he hadn't been hurt in certain places at the time. Physical injury simply allows a faster way for this to happen.
Kakuja
Kakujas are mutated kagunes thanks to the continued cannibalization of other ghouls. This comes from mutated RC cells, triggered by the increased amount of them gained through the flesh of another ghoul. As consumption continues, the kakuja keeps changing its form, though the shape and size depend also on the user's imagination and strength. The Kakuja works as an armour take engulfs the ghoul’s body, amplifies their strength and resilience, their powers and their abilities. Despite being a mutated kagune, it is possible for it to return to normal; Kakujas usually only come out when the ghoul needs a boost of power. Unfortunately, in exchange for this, the user will lose their mind bit by bit, which makes it harder and harder for them to actually control the kagune and kakuja as they please.
Weaknesses
Ghouls do have limitations. Their weak points are membranes, such as eyes, lips and so on, and these can be easily pierced the way a human's would also be.
Ghouls are always dependent on how much they eat and thus how many RC cells they have; if a ghoul doesn't feed enough or uses their powers too often, they won't be able to keep going and their abilities will be crippled.
Finally, while they can face most weapons, anything with enough impact could damage a ghoul, such as metal beams falling on them. Fire, cold, electricity, acid and similar elements can also affect them, although if they are well fed they will regenerate in order to patch themselves.
In a RP setting, magic can certainly affect them as well.

A love letter to touka kirishima
For the entire time I've been back into Tokyo ghoul I've centered on one lady specifically. Touka has been my favorite character, there's something alluring about her that draws me in.
When we first meet her, it's that sweet waitress front. With a bat of the eyes and a "welcome in" she sells it well. Our second meet with her it's red. A pretty girl slicing a man in half. Not that he didn't deserve it but still. It's such a drastic change and if Rizes turn didn't set the tone for the series Toukas did.
Her reveal puts it into perspective that anyone could be a ghoul. Even a cute waitress from a humble little coffee shop.
Our third and the setting meet with her is her saving kaneki from Nishio. Stating herself as one who isn't to be fucked with. When Kaneki reveals he used to be human she feels... Jealous. Sure the insult hurt but that fact he tasted that freedom before..? He had everything she longed for.
Touka has always had this fascination with humans, maybe it came from her father. She yearned to be in their world highschool and Yoriko giving her a chance to experience that. She forces herself to eat human food. Both to not waste Yorikos efforts and to feel normal for once. Even if it means making herself violently ill.
Anteiku made her feel that way too, talking with humans and ghouls alike. It made her dream of a world that she could be herself without being human. But that's just, not possible is it.
She grows attached to kaneki, it's not intentional but it happens nonetheless. Maybe it's his sweet nervous smiles or his endearing book obsession. He's nice and sees the good in her, something she didn't think was possible.
His connection with his little human friend reminds her of Yoriko, it makes her want to preserve that friendship between them in hopes of saving her own.
When Kimi tells her she's pretty, specifically her ghoul parts, it's unbelievable. A human sees that in her? A human can love a ghoul? I wondered if that made her hope.
When Touka was younger her brother left, rejecting the human esc or life yoshimura was offering them. While touka basked in the opportunity to live an almost normal life ayato was disgusted by it. Humans are what took away dad aren't they? When ayato pipes up about it she initially takes it as jealousy, sure he's bitter she's living the good life! She doesn't even see his abandonment when it happens.
Did Dad leave too? Where did those doves come from? Did they get him? Does everyone leave in the end? Is she that unlovable?
Her theories are proven right when Kaneki leaves too, white stalk hair leaving her life
She was so worried about him when he was taken, probably the only person genuinely losing sleep over him. And then he just... Leaves. He promises to see her again but touka doesn't believe that.
Touka throws herself into her studies, striving for kamii. Sure she DOES wanna get into there for her own reasons , biology and all that. wanting to know where she came from how she works. What they living weapon inside of her shoulder blade means. But she wants to feel closer to Kaneki.
Her job at anteikus on hold, they'd just recovered after the break in, finally open again. Her studies are her priority trying to busy herself.
When kaneki does come back, she's angry. There's a deep longing and happiness that he's okay but she pushes that away in favor of giving her a peace of her mind. She hits him and the contact after so long is euphoric, then there's the crash. Kaneki has never been good at consoling has he? She tells him to never come back, something she doesn't mean but he takes it as truth.
Touka doesn't see kaneki again after that. Besides for right before his "death".
She has to abandon her old life, they've been discovered as ghouls. That's something she can never run away from.
Touka is a brash impulsive mean girl, she's a bit bossy and impatient but under those walls she's soft. At her center she's so lonely, aching for someone to stay with her. She cares so deeply about the people she loves and will throw herself into danger at the change to avenge or protect them.
I will always sing her praises, she was a phenomenal character, I won't talk about her portion in re because today is meant to celebrate her. She is my favorite character ever my favorite girl alive.
Happy birthday Touka !!

Dear Monsterfuckers of Tumblr,
here's a poll for you
You see, I'm sloooowly working on a list of various monster romance mangas, (not strictly "good" ones, just ones that I know of, while keeping it varied so that everybody could find sth for themslves) and I want it to be ACTUAL monster romance, no "nomal guy with horns" no "normal girl with animal ears" etc. I have some criteria I go by, and usually it's pretty easy for me to determine if sth is a monster romance or just a supernatural romance.
HOWEVER Tokyo Ghoul is one of those few mangs I keep hesistating over. Because yes, on the one hand they look like humans most of the time and their "monsterous" transformations are basically humans with some power ups, mostly. Which is a big, big point toward "No!". But on the other hand the only thing they can eat is humans. Which is very monsterous! And their different biology, their ways of living and the social tensions their existence inroduces are major plot themes! So I'm just really, really torn here.
Help a gal out?

Tokyo Debunker OC lore dump!!
I made a Tokyo Debunker OC like all the other cool people in the fandom😼
I am no artist but I tried!!! it's hard to draw when you're a decaying zombie with rigor mortis :/
woo hoo time for a lore dump!!
Her name is Allister (just like me bc it's the best name ever!! defiantly not cus I'm bad with names!) and she's a member of Jabberwock (and by proxy, a ghoul)
Allister's stigma is kinda similar to Jin's? just a little. She can compel people to do things, but it doesn't work best on *people*. Her stigma works better on lower-intelligence creatures which is why she's so good with animals.
Also it's not apart of her being a ghoul, but shes immune to almost all poisons, venoms, and disease cus she's a special snowflake!! She often pesters Yuri to do research on this condition of hers so she has an excuse to hang around Mortkranken and see Jiro.
Allister is a transfer student from America. She moved to Japan after a certain incident... *foreshadows tragic backstory*...
Her special artifact is a butterfly knife that can shrink and grow. It's just barely sentient , so she can control it with her stigma. She often uses it like a boomerang. She also named her artifact "Billie"
Allister is incredibly researched in Cryptozoology and all matters relating to the undead. She's also pretty good with just regular zoology and biology, but she sucks ass in everything else.
She takes care of an anomalous octopus she claims was "gifted to her by The Mighty Cthulhu" (she found it while on a mission). Allister decided "this is my child now" and named the octopus "Kithy". Kithy isn't a baby kraken like Calamari, but he's relatively the same size. Kithy isn't dangerous at all, just very, VERY mischievous. Allister's stigma is why she's such a good candidate to be Kithy's caretaker and in Jabberwock in general. Though she doesn't really have to use her stigma on Kithy since he sees her as her mom anyways. She prefers to work with reptiles, but she loves all animals.
As you may have noticed, Alli is an emo kween 🖤🩸⛓️ She accessorizes to high hell (ignore that she doesn't have many in the artwork) and enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Darkwick dress code >:3
About that tragic backstory I teased a few paragraphs ago.... She left America because her vampire fianceé was murdered by her rival, Lucy. Lucy is this bitch that just likes to fuck with Allister cus she can. "haha I killed the women you were gonna have turn you into a vampire and marry". Typical Lucy shenanigans!!!
Allister, unlike me, is not a lazy decaying zombie, so she does her part to help around Jabberwock - mainly trying to pick up Ren's slack. I imagine the two of them have a sibling-rivarly-like relationship. Also their rooms are right next to each other so they like annoying the other with their music/movie volume.
Allister gets along with the other members of Jabberwock too - she gets along with most people. Except for the Sinostra members.... she despises them for being "the cool ones who get red in their uniform". She also doesn't really like Yuri that much but she sucks up to him anyways so he's more likely to let her hang around Mortkranken
Speaking of uniforms- Allister is constantly changing her fit depending on where she's doing. There's her school uniform, of course, and The Jumpsuit..., but she also has a casual fits she likes to wear when working around the park, usually made up of a band tee and jean shorts. Whenever she's loitering helping out at Mortkranken, she wears a cute little red velvet bodycon dress and a lab coat. Whenever she's out on missions, she goes all out on the wardrobe too. She's a little fashionista ✨
final tidbit of lore for her - Her favorite flower is the Spider Lily, which is also the nickname Towa calls her. There's a lot of meaning to spider lilies. Rebirth and renewal, eternal separation, paying tribute to the dead, and I think all of those really suit her.
I put a lot of love and crying over my lack of art skills into her, so I hope you guys like her at least a little bit 🫶🫶🫶
