Animage July 2024 Issue Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger 20th: Fireball Booster ft. Sainei Ryuji x Hayashi Tsuyoshi Interview (translation below)
Publication: June 10, 2024
The Returning Heroes
The Dekarangers fight space criminals and protect people's peace and safety. Sainei Ryuji-san and Hayashi Tsuyoshi-san, who play the roles of the famous duo Ban and Hoji, talk about their thoughts on the new film.
Ban (Akaza Banban): A former detective of the Earth Branch, he's now active in the Special Unit Fire Squad. He used to be reckless, but over the years, he's learned to use better judgment.
Hoji (Tomasu Houji): A serious, calm and composed detective of the Earth Branch, who's an exceptional marksman. While he does recognize Ban's abilities, when called "partner," he always responds with, "Don't call me partner." _
SPD: Special Police Dekaranger
20 years ago, six detectives from the Space Police's Earth Branch confronted the Space Criminals Alienizer. They've gathered again after such a long time, and launch an investigation into a large explosion. In pursuit of their suspect, Raenjo, the six must face the grand plan left behind by her husband, the galactic drug lord Tarewarane.
The 28th Super Sentai series, "Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger," which aired on TV from 2004 to 2005, is currently screening its newest film in theaters. As one of the most popular series, Dekaranger has often had sequels produced since its broadcast ended. This film, made on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, contains many topics, such as the appearance of a new form for DekaRed, and location filming in Kochi, but the relationship between Ban and Hoji is most noteworthy.
Ban steps away to teach and guide the newcomer, while Hoji remains the same at the frontlines. As his "partner," Hoji has mixed feelings about Ban, who's lost his reckless side from 20 years ago. The drama of friendship between the two men, portrayed through the incident, is sure to be felt even by former fans. Fighting coolly with passionate hearts, we hope that you'll be able to witness the courage of Dekaranger in its 20th year.
Sainei Ryuji x Hayashi Tsuyoshi Interview
-In the next production, Hoji will be…?!-
"Please tell us your thoughts after reading the script for this film."
Sainei: Honestly, I thought the details didn't have a 20th Anniversary feel to them. However, it seems like the Producer's aim was to not do anything special, and that they wanted us to work on it without it being overbearing.
Hayashi: I also felt like it was an extension of the main TV series. Of course, there are depictions that'll make you feel the passage of time.
Sainei: Among other things, I think that the relationship and feelings Ban and Hoji have for each other, and their conflicts about what hasn't and has changed were depicted well.
"Did you do any preparation before filming began?"
Hayashi: Weirdly enough, I can become Hoji naturally as soon as I flip the switch. As my debut work, I have alot of memories, as well as a strong emotional attachment to it. That being the case, I decided to recreate the look and feel of my original appearance in order to make it more enjoyable for the fans. With Ban in particular, the other members have changed alot, from their hair to their clothes, so I thought of atleast getting my hairstyle back. I spent nearly a year growing it out, and I changed it from being black as seen during the 10th Anniversary (Dekaranger: 10 YEARS AFTER) to a more natural brown color. I don't have a perm, but when I get my makeup done, I have them add abit of a wave to make it look like I have a perm. Even when I was asked to cut my hair for other jobs, they were understanding when I explained things to them.
Sainei: I myself didn't do anything.
Hayashi: So cool (laughs). Still, you become Ban in no time, right?
Sainei: Yeah, that's right. Director Watanabe even said, "I thought you'd become an adult after 20 years, but when you say your lines, it's amazing how you return to being Ban."
"How have your impressions of each other changed over the past 20 years?"
Sainei: Tsuyoshi and Kinoshita-san are the only ones among our members who can genuinely say, "My profession is being an actor." Including myself, the other four do a variety of things, and acting is one of them. It's difficult to continue doing one thing for 20 years, but I think we've gained something by doing so. I felt that the two of them, who've been actors for a long time, were different from the rest of us.
Hayashi: As a full time actor, if you ask me, it's the other way around. I think you have to learn alot in order to be able to take on various challenges.
Sainei: I couldn't take the dissatisfaction that comes with an acting career, so I left. I'm sure there must be things that've happened during Tsuyoshi's acting career that he absolutely couldn't stand. It's truly amazing that you've been an actor for so long while enduring it all.
Hayashi: I've felt this way since back then, but unlike Ban, Ryuji's smart and has composure. And now, 20 years later, I feel like he has a much more curious mind to pursue something. This may be an old fashioned expression, but I think he's going to become a really nice, handsome old man. As usual, he possesses something I don't have, moreover, his capability has become greater.
"What are some key points you'd like people to especially pay attention to in this film?"
Sainei: I'd like you to pay attention to the Suit Actors this time. Especially Fukuzawa-san, who became an Action Director over the past 20 years, and is also a Director for Kamen Rider. Not only was he the Action Director, but he himself played the role of Premiere DekaRed, and not only was he able to move well, but he also added a sense of weight to it, which was truly wonderful. Anime fans watching anime pay attention to Voice Actors and think, "They can do this kind of voice" or, "They can do this kind of performance," right? I hope that the audience will enjoy the film from that same point of view and think, "This Suit Actor is in it, and he can move like that" or, "It has more weight than before." I hope that the profession of being a Suit Actor will be recognized with more respect.
Hayashi: If I had to name a scene in which I appeared in, it would be the untransformed action scene with Naoko-san, who plays DekaPink in this film. I was the only one among our members who had an action scene this time, and it was the first time for me to do an action scene with Naoko-san. At first, they planned to cut alot of the film, but Fukuzawa-san said, "Tsuyoshi can do it," and we were almost able to do the whole thing from a single angle. Even though I don't normally do action scenes, Naoko-san did a great job of making me look strong and cool, while Fukuzawa-san skillfully made it look appealing. I don't mean to steal Ryuji's words, but I realized that there are many areas where we shine due to the presence of the Suit Actors, so I hope that you'll pay close attention to them.
"So far, Dekaranger has produced multiple sequels, and we think there are those who are anticipating even more sequels."
Sainei: As I mentioned in the beginning, including the way it ends, there's not much special about this one. So, I personally think it'd be better to do some sort of production with a conclusion, or a grand finale. However, I feel that if we don't do it within the next five years, it'll start to become tough for everyone. Especially from the point of view of the audience. The gap between their memories of that time and the present is becoming increasingly large. If we're going to do something for the 25th Anniversary, we need an idea of what we can do. If we're talking about characters, Hoji should definitely die in the line of duty.
Hayashi: What the heck! (laughs).
Sainei: It's fine, it'll be an unexpected role (laughs).
Hayashi: It's true that unexpected is good, but… (laughs). After what happened to Teresa (character who appeared in episode 37 of the TV series), why can't he be rewarded in the end? Everyone else is grabbing ahold of their own happiness, so it'd be good for Hoji to have some sort of redeeming part too, right?
Sainei: I see. Something like marriage?
Hayashi: Right. After his wedding, when Hoji's child is born, Ban would say something like, "My partner's become happy."
Sainei: Seems like it raises a death flag, no? (laughs).
Hayashi: It certainly raises a death flag! (laughs). In the final scene, Hoji's child would say something like, "I'd like to partner up with Ban-san" and then Ban will say, "Well then, I'll wait until you've grown up" and then it ends……I'd be fine with that (laughs). _
(page 109, from top to bottom)
Eternal Combination The members of Earth Branch, including Hoji, Sen, Jasmine, Umeko and Tetsu, and the other Dekarangers, Chief Doggie Kruger, and mechanic Shiratori Swan, are all still alive and well in this film. With a combination of skills, they conduct a massive search across the entire universe.
Promising Newcomer Edogawa Rui, a member of Fire Squad, appears in this film as Ban's junior. He's a promising newcomer who's been entrusted with the SP1 License by Ban. While cool and reasonable, during the investigation, he has his doubts about the overly unusual approach used by the members of Earth Branch.
The Special Police go to Kochi While Ban, Umeko and Rui head for the Alienizer Special Zone, and Hoji and Jasmine head for the planet Chima, where Raenjo, the suspect in this case used to live, Sen and Tetsu fly to Kochi. They try to get in touch with Mokumisu, a Ridomihan who's familiar with plants, and yet…..?
Premiere DekaRed The Suit Actor for Premiere DekaRed, DekaRed's new form, is Fukuzawa Hirofumi-san, who played DekaRed in the TV series and is the Action Director for this film. Make sure to pay attention to the special action performed by this Super Sentai legend.
Absolute Flawless Teamwork! With all mysteries unraveled, the curtains rise for the final decisive battle between the Dekarangers and Alienizers. Blinking is prohibited as you watch the battle scenes featuring the sleek teamwork of the six, the efforts of the Dekaranger Robos, and Premiere DekaRed's standout performance!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: 10 Years After (2015)

Note
This maybe a dumb question, given there’s are 10 Years After movies series for Super Sentai, what is your ranking of them?
I guess we can go over all four of the official "10 Years After" movies and see how they hold up.
Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger: 10 Years After
One thing that I like about this movie is the intrigue the first act sets up. While Nanami, Kouta, Ikkou, and Isshu have mostly settled into their new lives in addition to being heroes, the fact that Yousuke is working with the bad guys adds a lot of intrigue.
I also like how they don't really drag out the whole "Yousuke is evil" thing for too long. Towards the end of the first act, it's revealed to be an act so the villain doesn't hurt his new student, named Tenkai, only for said villain to immediately double-cross him as soon as he has the Shinobi Medals (the things the heroes use to transform), so the next ten can focus on the team reuniting after ten years.
The new kid, Tenkai (real subtle naming there) is an okay character. A lot of his scenes are connected to the story, and how he's the reincarnation of the Evil Will. The Evil Will was already a very vague threat in Hurricaneger itself, and it's not really explained how it became the more noble Sacred Will or how be became the next Shurikenger. There's nothing offensive about the character, I just feel like the concept behind him needed more work.
Also, even though he become his successor, they don't really talk about Shurikenger that much, if at all. I get he died ten years ago, but you would think since he acted as a mentor to the team, he would at least get a few mentions, seeing how Yousuke is essentially now in his role.
Hell, Mugensai and Oboro barely get to do anything in the two scenes they get. For a reunion movie, a lot of characters were really underutilized.
The final battle was honestly pretty underwhelming. While it was really cool to see Yousuke and Tenkai using the same technique together, there was less action and more focus on comedy. While Hurricaneger was a more comedic season, you would think for a movie where the team wasn't able to transform for most of the runtime, we would get more scenes of the actual Hurricanegers fighting instead of scenes where the team deals with the footsoldiers using techniques related to acting and dancing. The final attack was pretty cool too.
Overall, the movie was just okay. Nothing too special, but if you're a Hurricaneger fan, I'd at least give it a shot.
Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: 10 Years After
I love how much effort is put into worldbuilding and how SPD has evolved over the past ten years. Not only was the new base (obviously meant to justify the fact that the old sets weren't available) created as a result of how Agent Abrella's final attack involved hijacking the DekaBase, so it was moved underground, but a big part of the plot involves traveling to this planet where time moves differently to explain why all of the Judgment Time scenes are so short.
While it's a pretty cliche idea, I still like the way the Dekarangers have been estranged, as it's mostly in-character for all of them. Sen-Chan and Umeko are still on the original team, Ban is with the Fire Squad, Hoji is slacking off on the job (it's explained later on), Jasmine is a mother, and Tetsu is the acting chief of the Earth branch after Doggie was framed for murder.
In spite of that, the cast all does a great job with their roles, and while Hurricaneger's 10 Years After special didn't really do a lot, there are plenty of scenes showing the characters reunite, and they feel so genuine, showing how close friends they all are.
There's also plenty of fanservice here too. They explain stuff like Jasmine being an ESPer or Sen-Chan's thinking pose like in the show, and they also play with some running gags like Hoji's "I'm not your partner" line. This is a special that really sets out to pay tribute to Dekaranger after all these years.
The climax is just so much fun. Each of the Dekarangers is revealed to have their own plan to help prove Doggie's innocence, and it's so exciting to see how they play off each other, and the resulting battle is also really cool.
Overall, it's just a really fun movie to watch, and feels like a love letter to one of the most popular Sentai seasons.
Engine Sentai Go-Onger: 10 Years Grand Prix
Right off the bat, I don't really think this movie does as good a job at maintaining the tone the season its based off had compared to the previous two movies. The plot is more serious, with the Go-Ongers essentially being made criminals by the government. Go-Onger was arguably goofier than Hurricaneger was, yet a plotpoint early on to explain why the Go-Ongers themselves are outlaws involves the fact that Hiroto was framed for a suicide bombing. Yeah, it was obviously not true, and there are still goofy moments scattered through the film (they even make a joke about how dumb the actual circumstances behind the alleged bombing were), but it's strange that they even mention stuff as serious as suicide bombings and terrorism in the first place.
That's not to say the plot is bad. After all, the Go-Ongers arguably had one of the strongest senses of justice out of any Sentai team, so the idea of the law itself turning against them leads to an interesting idea on how to achieve peace, as the villain tries to use his political power to bring his own twisted form of peace to the Human World.
In my opinion, this special does a really good job at showing how things have changed in the ten years after, as it points out how technology has changed. When we see the return of the reformed Gaiark generals, they point out how electronic waste has become a concern in recent years, what with smartphones, computers, and video games becoming more mainstream.
Hands down, the dumbest part of the movie has to be that it takes way too long for the Go-Ongers to realize that they're being tracked thanks to the advanced microchip devices the main villain developed for citizens to use while he was disguised as Japan's Prime Minister. You would think that since the Go-Ongers are being hunter down by the government, and since everyone was using these, including the obligatory kid who got tangled up in this mess, that maybe that's how the government is tracking them down. They don't even realize this until about halfway through.
Also, the main plot twist that the micro is pretty much the same as what Plankton did to the citizens of Bikini Bottom in the SpongeBob movie, down to turning Saki into a mindless drone.
Thankfully, the final battle more than delivers, with some well-edited flashbacks to the events of the show, Kegareshia temporarily becoming Go-On Yellow, and seeing a giant robot crush the main villain for a change. It was pretty fun.
Overall, while I think this is my second least favorite of the four, it was still a pretty decent movie to watch.
Also, for some reason, the ending where the kid the Go-Ongers helped learns to fight back against his bullies references Jin's death from Gosei Sentai Dairanger, down to the coin flipping and the sunset. Yeah, they don't show anything happening to the kid, but... why would you reference that scene of all things to close out your Go-Onger anniversary movie? I'm sorry, that just really bothered me.
Kaizoku Sentai: Ten Gokaiger
YEAH, BABY! Gokaiger, the first Sentai I ever saw finally gets a fancy reunion movie! Sorry, had to get that out of my system there.
But yeah, while structurally, I think Dekaranger's 10 Years After was better, this is my personal favorite, if only because I love Gokaiger so much.
What really makes this movie stand out to me is that it avoids a lot of the pitfalls and overused cliches you expect from tokusatsu movies. Right after the opening scene, we see some past Sentai heroes fighting each other in a battle royale game called "Super Sentai Derby Colosseum". Instead of making this the main conflict by focusing on infighting or revealing that the veterans are being forced to fight, we soon learn that not only did they all agree to willingly relinquish their powers for the game on the condition that they get them back when the Earth is in danger, their lives aren't in danger because the Ministry of Defense reverse engineered Basco's technology to create clones to use their powers, and even most of the money earned from people placing bets is used to finance the Earth's defenses. It's only later on that it's revealed to be a front, but it's still a welcome change of pace from the stereotypical death game that's become far too common in tokusatsu this past decade.
This extends to the main villain, the Minister of Defense. Like with Go-Onger's 10 Years After movie, you'd think he's really an alien in disguise, but nope. He just works with some aliens and plans to create an army out of the Ranger Key clones because after seeing the Earth get invaded by aliens for so long, now the Minister wants to be the one invading, a unique take on how humanity would see the events of the past Sentai seasons.
The Gokaiger fanservice is, of course, on point as well. One of the workers for the Ministry of Defense is revealed to be the kid who inadvertently inspired Captain Marvelous to start seeing the value in a planet like Earth in Gokaiger's second episode, and seeing the Gokaigers all play up their roles as part of their shared plan is a welcome treat. Seeing the Gokaigers fight to return the Ranger Keys back to humanity is a great way of showing how far they've come to value their predecessors and successors. They even acknowledge the fact that they accidentally left Navi behind during the events of the Zyuohger team-up.
The one thing I'm not a fan of is the ugly powerup the team gets at the end thanks to the fragment of the destroyed Gokai Galleon. They say it's the Galleon's "Ultimate Power", but it just comes out of left field. It's a decent idea to show the Gokaigers' ship contributing to the action, but it's not as impactful as something like the Going Merry saving everyone on her final voyage.
But overall, it was a really fun movie to watch, and a good way to cap off this little marathon.
I'm probably going to make a post about the Hurricaneger and Abaranger 20 Years After movies once those come out with fan subs.

S.P.D! Special Playboy Dekaranger!
Some SPD + Playboy Bunny outfits for Bonnie and Kenji. I got the idea from my previous pictures of drawing Bonnie or another character in an SPD hoodie plus another outfit. Very classy. Since there’s no official reference of the Omega Ranger’s jacket unmorphed (We did only see Sam unmorphed for a second) sp I used the coat from Tekkan Tetsu Aira/Deka Break from Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: 10 Years After.
Bonnie is owned by me.
Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, Super Sentai ©️ Toei and Bandai

Do you know why some sentai shows get a 10 years later movie and others don't? Is it based on the availability of the actors?
I have a feeling that is a pretty big part of it.  Some actors either retire from acting, move on to other things or don’t want to go back to their beginnings or they have become too big for a small production to afford.
Tumblr media
I also have a feeling it might be based on how well a show did.  I really wonder if we will get more 10 years after movies for shows like Tensou Sentai Goseiger or Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters.
Tumblr media
I would also add that some series seem to be SO Popular they get not only a 10 Years After Special but also follow ups and crossovers such as Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger getting to be a massive part of the new Space Squad movie!
Tumblr media
For the record, there are shows I would -love- to see a 10 Years Later special for.  I mean, yeah, we’ve seen what Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger is up to 5 years later and I have a feeling they’ll be back in another five for the next Anniversary.
Tumblr media
However, I would love to see a joke version of a 10 Years Later special for Hikounin Sentai Akibaranger!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: 10 Years After (2015)
Super Sentai teaching you that when you were young in school, you're always together with your friends. But when you grow older, becoming adults, you will each go your own separate ways, different career, getting married, moving out elsewhere, everything's different.
But you can always catch up again once in a while, but it's just that it won't be the same anymore. So enjoy your present while it last.

My Top 15 Best Sentai Openings
I love sentai.  I know, shocking. I’ll give you a moment to pick up your jaw. Super Sentai is filled with action, a surprising amount of drama and men and women in colorful spandex! But for all of that, there are things we as fans tend to sometimes overlook. One of them being music. Toei, the owners of the Super Sentai franchise, make some great music. For this post, I’ll be looking at the opening themes to Super Sentai  The opening to a show isn’t there to just show the title card and credits. It’s to show what the series is about with its theme song and visuals hoping to get you hyped up for it. Sometimes, we tend to remember the opening to a show more than the actual show itself.  I will say, most if not all Sentai openings are very memorable and catchy, even the truly terrible ones...unfortunately, but that’s for another list.  Before I start, I just wanna let everyone know that if you hate or like any of these, more power to you. Just please don’t harass me over it is all. With that said let’s head on into...
MY TOP 15 BEST SENTAI OPENINGS! Why top 15? Because there were too many good sentai openings to leave out! --- #15: Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8x5ea9f3rs)  This opening is definitely not everyone’s cup and I can see why. The person who sings it sounds like he smokes 3 packs of cigarettes a day, but for an opening about a team of animal rangers, I think it fits well. However, I will admit it does get kind of old after binge watching for more than two hours.  #14: Kyukyu Sentai GogoV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87BBbm5Q-KI)  A sentai about a team of firefighters, a pilot, a policeman and an EMT ( all of whom are siblings) deserves an epic opening and that’s what this song brings. The song has a sense of urgency to it that I think fits well with the show, even in the lyrics  “Save the Earth! Save the Life(?)”  It just fits well with the theme of the show. #13: Tensou Sentai Goseiger  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nUT9Lr39pA)  Goseiger is the most disappointing sentai ever, but that rant is for a whole other thread. Here, I’m actually going to say something good about Goseigers. The theme song is great. I love the instrumental at the beginning, I love how after that it becomes quit somber and then cheerful, with children cheering “Tensou” during the chorus. It’s a good song.  #12: Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81ntnX6wEkg) The 70 sentai’s had very disco sounding openings. Even in Denjiman’s theme, you can hear the disco influence in the guitar riff, but starting with Sun Vulcan it seemed like there was a clear jump. I don’t know how to describe it since I’m not an expert on music, but you can clearly hear the difference. This opening to me signifies the change sentai would go through over the years.  #11: Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKcEvrOWhBc) Ah, Dynaman. The Michael Bay of Sentai. I swear, there are more explosions in the opening then some sentai’s have in their whole show! Anyways, its theme is extremely catchy. I mean almost all sentai themes are catchy but this one, in particular, will have you singing “Dy-dy-dy-dy-dynaman” ALL DAY. I also love the epic violin part at the beginning. It’s a solid 80′s sentai theme #10: Doubutsu Sentai Zyouhger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQa4P7b2NCA) Zyouhger is...meh. I only got 20 episodes in before dropping it. It wasn’t terrible, but it could be better. Maybe one day I’ll rewatch it and finish it, but for now, I’m putting on the back burner to watch other sentai seasons. It’s theme song, on the other hand, is fantastic. It has a very jungle feel to it which matches the theme of the show. My favorite part is when they do the call out to the rangers animals “EAGLE, SHARK, LION, ELEPHANT, TIGER” it honestly gives me goosebumps almost every time.  #9: Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iWRNAW6N1E)
Ohranger has the best theme song out of all the 90′s sentai in my opinion. Other than GogoV, the other 90′s Sentai theme songs range from ok to god awful.  This was the season Toei and Super Sentai was going to go all out and you can hear that in the theme. Every time I listen to it, it gets me pumped! The chorus is honestly me my favorite part of the song (starts at the 1:00 mark in the video) Not much else to say other than it’s a great song and the best 90′s sentai theme.  #8: Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kqFVvyKr6Q) Dekaranger was the first sentai I ever watched so there’s bit more bias in this one than just the theme is good. Like with the others before the music matches the theme of Dekaranger well. It has a sense of urgency to it like GogoV’s. The rangers are raring to go without a moment's hesitation. My fav parts have to be the beginning and the countdown. It might be a bit Engirshy, but its fun.  #7: Choushinsei Flashman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzKTRJsoyvo) When I first heard the beginning of this theme, I knew I’d love it. The trumpets combined with the guitar just work so well. It’s also the first sentai theme on the list that actually makes me want to dance! It’s a shame this season isn’t fully subbed yet. Maybe one day.  #6: Tokumei Sentai Gobuster (1st theme)  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V-u08pynXs&t=104s)  BUSTERS READY GO!  Why did they have to change this theme? Seriously it was fine! The 2nd theme is...ok I guess. I know it was an attempt to rebrand the show due to declining ratings and toy sales, but to me, the first theme has way more impact and emotion.  #5: Ressha Sentai Toqger:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW9q06Z9O1M) Want to make Trains seem cool? Put it to an awesome pop/punk song about imagination, and that’s exactly what they did here. No other sentai theme makes me want to headbang to it like this one.  Everything about this theme is just fun! I hope in the near future, Toei brings in more rock themes to Super Sentai #4: Kosoku Sentai Turboranger: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTj4Ho4dQJY) I feel like I love this theme more than I should, but I really don’t care. This theme to me is the best 80′s-90′s sentai theme. Everything just works. From the trumpets to the double pedal, every instrument and sound just adds to the song, nothing feels like filler and nothing feels like it shouldn’t be there. Also, I think I like songs with the word “dash” in them because this is the second theme with it.
#3: Juuken Sentai Gekiranger: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIuvq0-XrJg) Now we’re getting into the hard part of this list. Honestly, I wish I could give this and the next two theme’s the number one spot, but unfortunately, it wouldn’t be a top 10, or 15 in this case, list if I just put multiple songs in one spot.  Right off the bat, Gekirangers theme hits you with the classic Japanese instruments and then hits with a sort of modernization of those instruments and it’s like a beautiful explosion of martial arts. Makes me want to punch and kick my TV screen! (I suggest you don’t that)   #2: Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vToLwIEuI8) This is probably cheating, but I’ve never watched Shinkenger. I know! I know! Blasphemy! It was never that high on my “must watch” list...but that might have changed since after hearing the opening theme, because oh my god. To say that I was floored would be an understatement. This theme captures everything I want in a children's theme song. Catchy, high energy, fits well with the themes of the show and actually makes me want to watch it. The ONLY complaint I have is that the part before the chorus is a little too slow for my liking. Other than that this is almost a perfect theme.    Before I continue to my #1. Here are a few HONORABLE MENTIONS: Chojin Sentai Jetman:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvwKKYUCwQk) It’s a good theme and will get stuck in your head all day long as you sing “Jeto, Jeto-Jetoman!” over and over again!  Also, the dance exercise video of the song is a thing of beauty and must be seen!  Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6aDs8cvReI) It’s such a fun and happy theme. It makes me feel all bubbly inside. The only problem? This theme is for a sentai about thieving PIRATES! While it’s a great song on its own, it just doesn’t fit with Gokaiger in my opinion. Chikyu Sentai Fiveman:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmF6wqCtRug) Even though this was the series that almost killed super sentai, doesn’t mean it didn’t have a pretty good theme song. The first part is really good. The chorus, on the other hand, is a little weak, but it hangs in just enough to get on the honorable mentions list.  Dengeki Sentai Changeman:  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-7MzNRs4CY) I don’t think any theme song makes me want to shake my finger around like the swing dancers do like Changeman theme does. This and Jetman’s theme would be tied for the 16th spot. And now. My number 1 sentai theme song is!... #1: Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67dQUTP3Has) Is this a cop-out? Maybe, but I don’t care I love this song SO MUCH! Everything is nearly perfect about it. The vocals, instruments, the way it builds up,  and the sense of hope it brings, that just because the universe is ruled by an evil tyrant doesn’t mean there isn’t someone out there fighting it. A tiny flickering light in the void of darkness. That’s what this song fills me with and it’s the reason it’s my favorite sentai theme! Thank you guys! I hope you enjoyed this list! Let me know what you think and what are your favorite sentai theme songs!

Dekaranger 10 Years After was real enjoyable! The Space Gavan special has some shoes to fill ^^
I’m glad I watched certain portions first, because while I vaguely remember the plot + the incredulous outbursts alone would’ve indicated “Carrie” wasn’t Carrie, I liked seeing how the hints all added up. “Carrie” being noticeably bothered when Umeko mutters they don’t need Ban. Ban’s blunt speech and defiance contrasts Carrie’s mild, even timid manners. The way he sat in the plane. Subtly nudging Umeko to praise him when she talks about her teammates’ good points. The slight exasperation as Umeko runs in to protect “her”
I think I would’ve been Umeko if I blindly went into the movie. Completely oblivious until Ban stops using Mirage Dimension, right in front of me pffft
I love that they retained the tone of the original series but didn’t rely entirely on the nostalgia factor, and didn’t deride anyone’s character development. There’s also how you can tell they’ve gotten older (not just physically), and yet they’re the same people from ten years ago. Like how Umeko’s kindness has a more maternal quality to it; how Ban is still passionate yet his experience shines through; how Tetsu has the air of a commander, but his “youthful” enthusiasm pops up when he sees Swan again
I particularly like how Hoji’s “thawed”, from someone who was occasionally sharp and harsh to someone a lot more...gentle? Lax? Not that he was incapable of quiet kindness, but I think this side of him shined when he asked Ban what he did to make Umeko cry, and when Sen joined him on the ship and teased him
The best callback was everyone anticipating Hoji to retort “don’t call me partner”, and he only caves in because everyone wants in on that nostalgia factor. I think the chasing that ensued was less Ban and Hoji, and more of the actors having a good time XD
Me when the police siren head singer of the ED appeared: :D Me when I thought they were going to kill him: D:
Thankfully he didn’t die! Thankfully! I have a huge soft spot for him
As a (on hiatus) fic writer, I love thinking about what occurred in the ten years between then and now. Especially because I, resident shipping trash, have some tweaks in mind ^^
They’ve implied Jasmine reunited with and married Hikaru (who’s at least 10 years younger than her) in the two years Doggie was comatose; meaning there’s a gap of at least eight years since their last encounter. While that’s perfectly fine (they did only see each other as prospective lovers when Hikaru was an adult) and Hikaru seems like a fine young man, I find it hard to perceive the kid I saw in the original series as Jasmine’s love interest, let alone husband. But that’s just a me problem
I’m also not sure how to feel about Jasmine receiving teleportation powers through breastfeeding. Then again, the power of a mother’s love can do wonderous things - and there’s very little I know about ESPer lore. Still on the fence though
Umeko basically proposed to Sen, proving that she, indeed, wears the pants in this relationship. I knew this the moment she fell for him in episode 46 but it’s nice to have official confirmations. And while the movie didn’t focus on their love life, I could tell they’ve had a good ten years together
Doggie/Swan is the kind of couple where I don’t ship it but I’m also fine with seeing them get ship teased. And yet I was mentally shrieking when Doggie said “aishiteru” - I was expecting “suki da”, I guess ten years warrants a different choice of words
