I Had a fantastic meal a few Saturday nights a go in a traditional old English village pub called the Anchor Inn. Nestled in the South Gloucestershire countryside this pub is located in Oldbury-on-Severn. A traditional Bass house it is warm, friendly and inviting. The food is traditional pub grub and is delicious. The portion sizes are perfect and everything is freshly homemade on the premises. There where four of us dining and we where sat very comfortably in the main dining room which is nicely furnished and has a warm country feel to it.To start we had to share two rosemary and garlic focaccia breads with olive oil and balsamic reduction. A very light sharing starter this is quick and simple and even though it is bread does not make you feel like you’ve ate an entire Hovis factory. For mains I had a homemade steak and kidney pie with a Stilton cheese crust. The pie was packed with plenty of filling and the pastry was perfect. All to often I go into a pub especially what they call now a ‘gastro pub’ and find a pie on the menu which in fact isn’t a pie. Instead you get a half decent stew pith a puff pastry lid. This is not a pie, it’s a mess. Or at least that is what ends up on the dinner cloth after cracking open one of these puss pastry pillows! So it was really nice to be served a proper pie! To accompany it I had fresh veg and miniature roast potatoes with chopped bacon and onion. I also had a side order of their homemade coleslaw which was delicious. We didn’t have dessert because with the bread to start and the mains we where stuffed. All the food was amazing and so tasty it was worth every penny. The service was good and was quick. Probably a little too quick but that is really my only criticism.
