Imagine you're a 15 year old boy. You probably never knew kindness in your life because your mom died when you were little and your dad is too obsessed with war and murder and world domination to care about you. You live to please him. You'd do anything to make him proud. You *have* done awful, awful things to appease him. Things that keep you up at night. You're mean and a bully and act like you're the boss of everyone because you hurt inside and because you're trying to play the part of the man, the big authoritative man your father can't help but be proud of. There's this one kid who your father is obsessed with for some reason. He makes you work with him. You don't get why this guy is so special but whatever. You fight with him everyday but you still work side by side. You two commit more awful things to appease your father. Your father is kinda ... happy? No one can read him anyway. You spend months and months with the other kid. You two grow kinda close. Maybe he's not that bad after all. You both get a promotion. Your father is so proud of you two, his sons. You're so happy you can't even think straight. Maybe you can all be a family now, yes , you your new brother and your dad. Your father trusts you to lead his army to war and you will, you'll prove yourself to him and he'll love you. You come back from what ended up being a diversion, not the actual war, and your new family is fighting. Your dad tells you to shoot your brother. You would never. Your brother threatens to shoot you. What? Your father shoots you. Why? to "remove you from the equation". You die and in your last seconds you ask to be forgiven. You regret it all so much. You finally see through your father's constant manipulation but it's too late. You die. Your brother goes to war with the rifle your dad had given you , the rifle you were to protect yourself with in battle. You're dead and you don't know that the rifle was unloaded. You're dead and everyone you've ever loved betrayed you. You're Davy fucking Prentiss Jr and you haunt my existence

I made an oc..😔 reg oliver (stole a name todd listed at the beginning of tkonlg i think im clever for it) and made him into a goofy character, never drew any more than these bc his design didnt look how i wanted thoufh its still a silly concept i think. Yes, Todd! He'd grown up with his only exposure to women and girls through disgusting men's Noise, then only seen other settlements deal with the Noise by dividing men and women and forcing control of one over the other. But right here, he gets it. He didn't save Viola from Aaron because he owns her or to get her to owe him something. She's her own person and she's someone he's going to save. They're both true.

SUBLIME CINEMA #660 - FAR FROM HEAVEN

Todd Haynes' masterpiece feels more classic now than it did when it first was released - the gorgeous cinematography by Edward Lachman deliberately evokes 50's era technicolor melodramas in the style of Sirk, and ironically now even the look of this modern film feels like a remnant of the past. Movies simply don't look this good anymore.

One of the many things that make me insane about the chaos walking books are the parallels between the characters. I could talk about them for DAYS. Viola and Mistress Coyle. Todd and Mayor Prentiss. Mayor Prentiss and Mistress Coyle. Davy and Todd. The return and Todd. Ben and Mayor Prentiss. The Sky and the Return. The Sky and the Return and the Mayor and Todd and so on and so forth until you combust.

Some of these specifically keep me up at night. The Sky telling the Return "you have no father, I have no son , we should totally be a found family" and the mayor constantly telling Todd that he's proud of him , that they are connected, forcing this bond between them , forcing him into the role of his son while the Sky asks, the mayor creating this test where to become part of the men of Pressintown you have to kill someone while the Sky's test is not to kill, to be able to show mercy, let go of anger to join the Land. Either way both Todd and The Return find themselves unable to kill, they are both angry and broken and Todd does hate Aaron and seek vengence just like The Return hates Todd but in the end they can't kill. but then there's Todd killing a spackle with a knife and The Return unable to stab Ben but he kinda kills Todd with a rifle while Todd purposefully doesn't shoot any spackle with his rifle during the first fight of the war And and and both the mayor and the sky die but while the Sky's memory is treasured and the Return is proud to follow in his footsteps Todd will never become like the Mayor ( who is only remembered as a horror story I hope )

There's so many characters mirroring each other it's insaneeee like mistress coyle and the mayor who both believe they are so high and mighty and so different but when it comes down to it they are both deranged fucking people obsessed with control. They go about it in different ways , one a murderer and the other a terrorist, they make sides and they fight and he poisons people and she's a healer but when it comes down to it she almost blows viola up with a bomb while the mayor saves Todd's life countless times. They are so obsessed with power and control that when they see it getting permanently out of their reach they kill themselves. She , "the martyr", "the voice of the people", goes out with a bomb while him "the president of the world", "the general", tries to leave behind countless deaths in a war he designed to have no winners. THEY ARE FUCKING INSANE YOUR HONOR "(if she wins) you'd be swapping one tyrant for another" YEAH WE NOTICED and and and do you see how they're unstoppable forces ?? The only reason they are defeated is because they defeat themselves!! No one else in the whole new world could have stopped them otherwise!!! AND did you guys notice how they were such better people in the past?? Mistress Coyle helping the protagonists of The wide open sea and Todd's mom describing the Mayor as a good man at the beginning of her journal??? But then power got to them , the need for control made them such horrible people

The genesis was that I wanted two teen characters who were like the teenagers that I knew, rather than the teen characters that I saw. Cuz--There's always...at the time I was always complaining that there was always a thick but brave, principled, troubled boy and a brainy-but-beautiful-behind-her-glasses girl, and I thought, well, why can't they both be brave and why can't they both be foolish and why can't they both make mistakes and why can't they both make incredibly good decisions? And that's where it really came from and I wanted them to fall in real love. I didn't want it to be cheap. I didn't want it to be in twenty-four hours like they make a joke of in Frozen....I wanted it to really mean something. In terms of the theme they really were against the odds. Different places, different backgrounds, different education levels. They were physically separated for most of the books and I thought well, when it comes, when it finally comes, and when you're a teenager in love it feels as if the entire world has shifted, which is so fantastic and so painful, but so brilliant but so awful but so great. I thought I wanted it to really, really feel like something. I want to take the feeling of teenage love and treat it really seriously. So that's where it came from.
