muse: tobias salvatori [ 50s, detective, divorced ] open to: m only pls! age gaps for this are encouraged. plot: give me the usual, aka co-dependent friends/detectives working intense cases together and feeling like they can only rely on each other... but having to suppress that simmering attraction between them.

The days were stretching colder, darker, and more unforgiving, mirroring the slow freeze creeping into Tobias’s chest. The Midnight Strangler case had gone silent, too silent, and Tobias hated it. He despised the bitter reality of knowing the trail was slipping away, just as so many others had in his too-long career. He had learned how to brace himself for that inevitable moment when the scent faded and the shadows consumed their quarry. But it didn’t make it any easier.

These cases always wormed their way into his mind, carving jagged grooves into his thoughts and making it impossible to focus on the fragile beauty of the world. His team teased him about his restlessness, the way he gnawed at unsolved puzzles like a dog with a bone. They didn’t know how it felt to see the darkness behind every closed door, every unspoken word. Tobias forced himself to take a breath as he leaned against his desk. He glanced at his partner----- sharp-eyed, and irritatingly good at seeing through his defenses. Their partnership had its friction, sure, but there was a strange solace in it too, like being tethered to someone who understood the same haunting rhythm.

“We should get some real coffee,” Tobias grumbled. “The good stuff. Not the station’s dishwater.” He shot a pointed glance toward the break room, where the stale brew was a sad reminder of how joyless the case had become. “Wanna go on a run with me? I’ll even listen to you babble about… whatever you’ve got going on for the holidays. Seeing your family, or… I dunno, a boyfriend?” The words hung in the air, heavier than he’d intended. He hadn’t meant to let it slip; the curiosity, the subtle edge of something too warm to be professional. He busied himself adjusting the files on his desk, refusing to meet their gaze now, his pulse quickening at the thought that maybe, just maybe, they might read between the lines.
