Skill issue.
I’d love to be allowed to be as flawed and clever and mad and wonderful and nuanced as a Moffat Woman. I’d love to reclaim my narrative against fate itself and find myself a happy ending even after death. I’d love to still be sexy when women are past the age of being allowed to be in media.
I’d love not having to be perfect to be a victim and be able to stick it to the people who made me one with their so-called “harmless” thoughts and actions. I’d love to be able to look a man who betrayed me in the face and tell him that he is the problem and his jokes aren’t harmless.
I’d love to find my fairytale. I’d love to be a sapphic given immortality to travel with my lover and I’d love to do all of this with insanely good banter and character moments.
This is a skill issue on your part, being a Moffat Woman would be fucking awesome.
If there’s one fictional thing I’d never want to be, it would be a Woman Written By Steven Moffat. I’m not sure what this guy’s deal is, but he has an awful habit of creating badass yet sexualised female characters and then killing them tragically before they can be properly developed, then having them mourned by a sopping wet cat of a man. Now, some of these characters are my absolute favourite parts of the show - Clara Oswald, River Song and Missy for example, and there are a few exceptions such as Bill Potts, but I just think it would be a terrifying fate. I mean, can you even imagine? You’re wandering around a very dodgy London/space location in a short skirt with a thousand witty quips on the tip of your tongue, being trailed by a skinny guy in an unusual outfit, then you get shot or something and it’s very sad and tragic. I would just hate it.
#steven moffat#not derry girls#doctor who#Of course no show beats Derry Girls for being the best at portraying womanhood#but I maintain the likes of Douglas is Cancelled and Doctor Who and Press Gang are good as well#I don’t normally do responses but this was in the tag and I just want cool gifsets and analysis#also what the fuck /respectfully do you mean ‘and then you get shot or something?’#the point is that death doesn’t have to be the end for the Doctor Who women#they died AND THEN they live on somehow#and live full lives#like the Doctor!!!#why should he be the only one to live past death#it’s!!! building up to Thirteen thematically!!!#if anyone got the fridging treatment it was Rory but that doesn’t fit him as a sexist writer now does it#amazing how the companions and River Song reclaiming themselves after a death of sorts is dismissed#they quite literally have some of the most blatant agency any male writer has given their women#or have we forgotten Donna was mindwiped and Rose was given a clone of her love to pacify her loss#the fact that RTD went back and fixed Donna’s ending is a response TO MOFFAT making Clara have agency over her ending#I WILL BITE THINGS ACTUALLY I DO NOT CARE#Autism and ADHD walk into a bar and someone insults Steven Moffat’s Doctor Who writing: 👀😤😡🤬#I would actually go so far as to say as far as straight white make writers go Moffat is S-tier at writing women#“oh but he writes sex comedy! respectfully - fucking so what?#most of the bad Matt Smith moments were ad-libbed by the actors anyway so#and one written by Neil Gaiman#so#there’s that#also why CANT older women do sex comedy?#they should it is subversive actually#Bill Potts is me a black sapphic but Amy Pond is also me: neurodivergent and an outsider#and Clara is me: lowkey a control freak and River is me: curly hair and sex jokes

I feel bad for Donna that she is stuck with the sad old weasel version of the Doctor. The way she looked at Fifteen!!! Overall Fifteen is probably the most conventionally attractive, the most outright sexy and fit Doctor (ever?). Not saying the others weren’t attractive at all, but back then they portrayed the Doctor more in the nerdy/ geeky-attractive kinda way. I think considering Fifteen’s charm, charisma, humour and looks, after his run he might end up as “The Sexy Doctor”. I know Donna would agree. In general the new TARDIS-Team with Millie Gibson, Varada Sethu and of course Ncuti Gatwa is ridiculously good looking. I guess New New Who doesn’t allow “ugly”/ normal looking people any longer. 😂
Hello kind Anon
I get the feeling that you are a great deal younger than I am (and rather ageist), because I know the "sad old weasel version of the Doctor"
will be only a temporary situation. Soon, he'll be back to his cheerful, pre-bigeneration self. Look at how delighted he was to be reuninited with Donna
And Donna doesn't seem to mind at all with being 'stuck' with him.
especially when her old best friend ocassionally looks at her like this:
Even the Not-Thing!Doctor knew how he felt about her.
I totally agree that the Fifteenth Doctor is a very attractive man/being. His good looks, kindness, intelligence and charm won us all over instantly upon his emergence.
Oh yes, he knows what he's doing to us.
But as for "the most outright sexy and fit Doctor (ever?)" well... I was around for the anouncement of Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor; and Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor. Both were generally considered very fine specimens of manhood, back in the day! And truth be told, I still get a thrill out of seeing them in anything. Sexiness is a matter of personal taste, after all. Plus, while I appreciate Ncuti Gatwa visually (among other things), I feel he is rather too young for me. I'm more likely to pat his cheek and try to feed him up.
Grandmothers, eh?! What are we like.
We've only had one episode of RTD's latest Season 1 run (if we ignore the 60th anniversary specials) so as far as "I guess New New Who doesn’t allow “ugly”/ normal looking people any longer. 😂" is concerned, it's a bit hard to tell how influential the move to Disney+ has over the general casting. Especially when you try to dodge any spoilers. Not that Moffat was immune to casting based on looks rather than talent, but I am expecting to see more conventially attractive people to appear in the coming episodes.
Of course, I'm hoping that the old trend of hiring decent actors rather than model/actors will be maintained, but you never know how that extra streaming coinage will be. The casting of attractive companions like Millie Gibson and Varada Sethu was no surprise at all. *mentally beats the 'something for the dads' thinking to a pulp* In fact, it's refreshing when that doesn't happen.
Personally, I want RTD to create those DW spinoffs he jokingly referred to when the Disney+ announcement was made. Those tend to be pretty good and/or interesting.
In conclusion, while I really love the new, Fifteenth Doctor and look forward to seeing his adventures.
Donna certainly appreciated his physique and good looks, but I could never turn my back on the Fourteenth Doctor. I mean... Just look at him
He needs our special love. Especially because he loves and adores Donna. In the way she deserves to be.
#kind Anon#Fourteenth Doctor#Fifteenth Doctor#Doctor x Donna#we all get old#the only way to stay young#is to be frozen#or pickled in a jar#hmm#either way you'd become something hard to love

theimmaturityofthomasastruc blog has become nothing but needless drama.
Maybe at some point and time it was about conducting criticism towards a creator that appeared to be too fussy towards their fans. Now? It's "Oh, look. Thomas made a social faux-pas. Thomas blocked you like literally any other Twitter user would. Thomas doesn't listen to criticism that comes from a place of unchecked anger."
It reduces a human who's... just a dude at the end of the day into a fandom punching back. I saw this with Steven Moffat when his Doctor Who run was going and the fandom got BAD. Lies, misinformation, quotes taken out of context from years ago, etc. It was cancel culture before it was cool.
Like... I might be hypocritical for this because I've fallen down the Lily Orchard rabbit hole myself. But Lily is somebody going beyond having bad takes and has displayed a pattern of toxicity in her relationships as well as with her own fans.
Thomas Astruc? I don't agree with all that he writes, barring the times he had to appease the multiple production teams Miraculous acquired, buuuuuuuut he's generally just some guy. Hell, he's pretty far left if you took the time to look at his Twitter feed (not that politics and morality always overlap).
Until tangible accusations come forth about him, I'm sorry to say that theimmaturityofthomasastruc is, well, ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. And NO, that one video essay about the woes of the Miraculous fandom isn't going to sway me.
I am done, done, done, dooooooooooooone with giving this kind of discourse the time of day. Especially when similar cases in other fandoms have turned well and truly ugly. I beseech the Miraculous fandom to see the red flags that have been waving this whole time.
Creators deserves to be opinionated. They deserve boundaries. And even if there are incidents of overlooking more "reasonable" fans, well, once burned, twice shy is a cliche for a reason.

Doctor Who, but Chronologically: 46
Back to the 1980s! Fun fun fun. Or not, because it's now 1983 and we're watching a Mark Gatiss episode set on a Soviet nuclear sub, which is. Well. Not fun. He's a very boring writer. Lots of stereotypes in both plot and set pieces, and a general feel that he'd have made a very good writer in the 1960s. WITH THAT SAID THOUGH I remember absolutely hating this episode at the time, but on a rewatch, I'm delighted to say it's actually very solidly just below average.
So, Matt Smith and Clara again - ironically, in the air date order we've only skipped backwards by one. Here, they land on said Soviet sub in the middle of the Cold War. Because this is a Gatiss episode, every single person on it is a white man, because aliens and time travel are fine, but women would be Pushing It. Fun fact! This is the first time since 1978 where the only woman is the companion. Two of these white men, in accordance with the laws of Films About Russian Submarines During The Cold War, are at loggerheads because one wants to blow up America and the other thinks nuking the planet is Bad, Actually. Oddly, even this tension feels like a shoehorned-in stereotype, given that the nasty one dies like a third of the way in, but whatever.
ANYWAY the nuclear sub has found what they think is a mammoth in some ice, and Cold War nuclear subs are famous for wanting to advance the plight of natural history museums, so they have it on board. Unfortunately, some science-hating one-scene character decides that thawing out a dead mammoth carcass to continue decomposing in an enclosed submarine is a fantastic idea, and so thaws it with... well, a blowtorch, somehow. This reveals that the mammoth is not a mammoth! It's an Ice Warrior! We've met their queen. It immediately chokes out and kills the idiot with the blow torch.
(Another Fun Fact! This is the first televised Ice Warrior story to feature no Ice Warriors played by actors from Trinidad.)
Meanwhile, Clara and the Doctor arrive and nearly get arrested, then in a scene that belongs in a mildly tedious 1950s it's-behind-you farce, the Ice Warrior turns up on the bridge. It gets assaulted by the nasty Russian who wants to nuke America. This then sets off the premise of the episode, which is that there is an Ice Warrior on a stricken nuclear sub that wants to wipe out humanity because Martian honour means "Attack one, attack all" - as multiple characters stress multiple times, because the Nasty Russian attacked it, the Ice Warrior now gets to kill everyone. "You attacked me," insists the Ice Warrior at one point.
Which is very interesting, given that the first scene of this damned Ice Warrior was of him attacking stupid blowtorch boy.
Obviously, this is just resolved by convincing the Ice Warrior not to kill everyone, and then an Ice Warrior ship turns up and takes it away, presumably back to the queen and that one human guy on Mars. Would he still be alive? Can't remember the year we saw him, now.
SO! What's plot relevant?
Well, this is clearly early Clara - it's her first trip, possibly? We find out about the TARDIS' translation circuits again, which she didn't know about. She gets to have her first Companion Does a Thing scene, I presume (first from her perspective, anyway), but is in fact utterly fucking useless in it, because it's written by Mark Gatiss. Her only actual function in this story is to remind the Ice Warrior that he has a dead daughter, because she is the Only Woman in this story (seriously why did the Ice Warrior have to be male as well? That would have at least HELPED.) Also we find out about the HADS for the first time! If the Doctor leaves it on, the TARDIS just gtfo if it senses danger. Cool. Oh, and another extraordinarily tedious Moffat-era "You are a soldier, Doctor... Another soldier can always tell..." moment.
Otherwise... yeah I think that's it.
Let's update the board!
“She” (an unknown person) is returning (perhaps River returned as Missy. Maybe Me? Maybe Clara???!)
There is something on Donna’s back
An entire planet, Pyrovilia, just… disappeared, somehow. (Maybe because the TARDIS is exploding??? Saturnine was also lost, and that WAS because of the TARDIS exploding. The lion man’s planet was also lost but he was a bit of a knob about it if I’m honest. The Thijarian planet was destroyed by some sort of impact). Is this the Flux?
Amy is maybe dead (she’s not)
The Doctor has been cubed (he’s out, but how?)
River is possibly blown up (unless she’s Missy. Nope: she is definitely not blown up)
The TARDIS has blown up (It’s fine now. Except it’s sort of melting now because it’s corrupted, but it’s fine again. NOPE, back to not working.)
The universe appears to have ended (the universe is back again)
The Doctor has employed(?) Nardole
(And Nardole was “reassembled???” Nardole had glass nipples and invisible hair?? WHAT THE FUCK IS HE)
There’s a vault in the TARDIS and it contains Missy but we don’t know why (sometimes she knocks for the bants)
There’s an immortal Viking girl now. Her name is Me and she’s now looking after the people the Doctor abandons
Why was Rory entirely unconcerned by the entire world suddenly going silent when that is Not Normal and should have been, at the very least, extremely disconcerting?
What did the Doctor do to Queen Lizzie One?
Why is Amy seeing a one-eyed woman in a vanishing window? (She’s with the Silents, but we don’t know why Amy saw her)
Why is Amy’s pregnancy inconclusive? (Maybe because the baby had Time Lord DNA?) She’s deffo pregnant and the baby becomes River, but why inconclusive?
Who is Sarah-Jane Smith?
How is the Doctor Bill’s teacher and why/where does he have an office?
What is going on with the Cyber War and the Cyberium???
What happened with the Other Cyber War?
What happened with the Third War that deleted the void?
Why does Rose seem particularly important?
What order do these Doctors go in? (Eccleston, Tennant, uncertain, Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker)
Which companion just… forgot the Doctor, and how?
Yaz and Vinder are about to die as Mori/Mwri/Muuri (Not anymore, somehow)
There is a Lupari shield around Earth.
What’s a Time War?
What’s the Rift?
What’s Bad Wolf?
In which war did the Doctor become a war criminal, and how?
Who is the Master?
Why has Amy forgotten Rory? How did she forget a Dalek invasion?
Is Rory plastic or not? Yeah, must be, he couldn’t possibly remember being plastic otherwise
Why is the Doctor sulking on a cloud?
How exactly does the Doctor have a cloud?
What exactly happened with Strax to, uh, tame him?
Which friend killed Strax?
Which friend brought Strax back?
Where did this lesbian lizard and human couple come from?
What happened with Clara as Souffle Girl and the Daleks?
How does Clara actually join?
Why so many Claras? A psychic midwife says she’s just normal human
Why is Missy apparently in robo-heaven?
Why is probably!Missy pushing Clara and the Doctor together?
What is Trensilor and what happened there?
Who is Handles?
The Doctor is about to be dissolved by a beautiful geode man
The universe is being crushed by the Flux
Will the Doctor open the fobwatch?
Sontarans are invading Earth again
Who is Kate?
Who is Osgood? Another name of Clara’s again?
The fuck is the deal with the Grand Serpent
Does Martha get to go to an ice cream planet with 12-fingered massage aliens?
How did the Doctor forget Clara?
Who is Bill’s puddle girlfriend Heather?
How did Nardole die?
When does Bill get Cyberman-ed and die?
When does the Doctor shrink and enter a Dalek called Rusty?
Whittaker is falling to her death rn
Was that ring relevant?
Does anyone know the Doctor’s name?
When did Yaz talk to Dan about fancying the Doctor?
When did Dan talk to the Doctor about fancying Yaz?
What’s happening with the bees?
What happened with Donna’s ex and a giant spider?
What war wiped out the Daleks, and is it one of the ones already mentioned?
What did the Doctor mean when he said “The (Daleks) always live, while I lose everything?”
If Dalek Caan is the last Dalek left why are there more now?
How did the rest of the Time Lords die?
How and why did Amy melt?
What’s the question that will make silence fall?
Why do the Silents… want silence to fall?
How and why are Silents at war with the Doctor when he… hasn’t even heard of them?
How does Hitler get out of the cupboard?
What’s the significance of fish fingers and custard?
Why does the Doctor feel guilt about Rose, Martha and Donna?
What happened with the space whale?
When does Rory defend Amy for 2000 years? Since Roman times, it seems
How does the Doctor survive River? He doesn’t, apparently
How does he erase himself from history
Did Captain Jack lose his memories to the same people as the Doctor? What did he lose?
When did the Doctor send the Daleks into a void to save the universe?
What’s with the weird crack in the wall and is it affecting memories?
Why do Amy and Rory think the Doctor is dead? Is it because of River as an astronaut?
Is Matt Smith’s Doctor a tree racist?
Why is the beautiful geode woman stealing people into a Passenger form?
River says she’ll die one day when the Doctor doesn’t remember her, let’s hope she doesn’t mean it
Why doesn’t the TARDIS like Clara?

Boom
So I had vaguely seen things about Moffat coming back, but I'd always interpreted the 'next' series as being... the NEXT series. after the upcoming one. anyway BIG ol' surprise in the opening titles lol
are these those anglican marines back from what?? s5? s6?
....is this a flashback? I think those guys had the same name
we're finding out he swapped a duty and now he's injured
oh wait it’s not a flashback lmao
this is where being bad at faces fails me
is this an american ambulance situation where they cost too much and ruin your life?
ah
they ruin your life in another significant way
‘villengard’ assuming this is pre-bananas lol
*dramatically throws open tardis doors* 'someone needs me!!!'
Fifteen’s theme is so good
Moffat??????? well that explains the anglican marines
Fifteen is excellent at answering questions. shame they're not the questions Ruby is asking
‘one wrong move and boom’ eyy title drop
when can Twelve and Fifteen bond over capitalism and being scottish
‘i’m not even screaming. yet.’ yeah
‘it’s going to be tricky’ ‘it’s going to be a MOMENT YEAH’
gotta think of health and safety at war what can I say! only the finest ventilated air before our ambulances murder you
Ruby on her first planet <3 (though only now after 6 months?? Fifteen you've been slacking clearly!)
‘he was being sMELTED??’ ‘it’s a good word smelted’ 'NOT AT THE MOMENT???’ obviously Fifteen's not having the best time but poor Ruby lmao
‘ooooh I am. havin’ a day 🙃🙃’ never has a Doctor been so me. minus the landmine.
Ruby don’t make the Doctor laugh when he’s balancing on one leg!!
oh man the Doctor really IS having a day
ok those soldiers are definitely not the same guy lol but I could have sworn they had the same name!
‘everything is possible. everywhere is a beach eventually’ RIP Mundy left out of that lil callback to earlier
Ruby grabbing the gun, shooting it and yelling is v much banging the pipes in Space Babies lol
love that her instinct is make noise and yell, think later
meanwhile Splice is chilling with her lil photo album
…did I mishear shoot me little bitch??
oh lol ‘shoot me a little bit'
nooo Ruby!!
‘I can’t think unless I’m talking and I can only talk to you’ oh that is VERY Twelve Clara
and also a lot to put on someone you’ve known for so little time that they’re only just seeing their first planet RIP
Fifteen: do you get it do you get it!! Ruby: 😴
'there are no Kastarions’ big Doctor’s Daughter vibes
Thirteen: have faith!!! <3 Fifteen: >:(
love fifteen giving his big speech with snot running down his lip. giving Nine in Dalek
‘how much of the countdown left’ ‘3 minutes maybe’ I mean you said 5 minutes 4 minutes ago
speaking of which what is the point of assessing for life and having a countdown if it just blows anyway
(to give it flashy lights and features I know)
bud I appreciate the romance going on here but now is maybe not the time
oh yeah very much not the time
…..delighted that Ruby hasn’t been smelted. yet.
(.....also 3 minutes have now passed. where is the boom the title promised!!)
the deaths are stacking up and Splice is just having the best chill time lol
oh the ambulance is the twist lady!
just for the record it took that failsafe 8 minutes to trigger
lol poor confused Ruby. honestly rude to die and miss the action
there’s the closeup from the trailer!!
who knew that serene deep breath came shortly after prolonged near death by landmine
‘he’s not gone. he’s just dead’ <3
‘you keep the faith Splice’ there we go
‘snow isn’t snow until it falls’ maybe it’s just my love for Twelve’s era but I’ve been endeared to these nonsense Moffatisms lol
ok looking at the credits those characters have different names but they're still similar! you can’t have two characters with similar names played by incredibly similar-looking people and expect us to tell them apart??
WAIT HANG ON
varada sethu????? as in new companion???????
is Mundy coming back?????? or is this a Karen Gillan situation?
Really enjoyed this one!! Easily my fave of the first three, very tense and WHAT a showcase for Ncuti!!! Absolute powerhouse. However. On rewatch I really did notice how much Ruby was written like Clara lol. Ah Moff you've got your strengths and weaknesses like us all

Martin Freeman (60/366)
Sherlock 2010–2017
Writer & Creator Mark Gatiss Steven Moffat
*Modernized version of the Conan Doyle characters.
T1.E1 A Study in Pink (2010) Directed Paul McGuigan
Great 'dialogue exchanges' between characters: N°1 Sherlock and John (1x1; crime scene).
SHERLOCK: Good shot. JOHN: Yeah, it must have been. Through that window… SHERLOCK: Well you’d know. SHERLOCK: We’ll need to get the powder burns out your finger. I don’t suppose you’d serve time for this, but let’s avoid the court case. Are you all right? JOHN: Course I’m all right. SHERLOCK: You have just killed a man. JOHN: Yeah. True. But he wasn’t a very nice man. SHERLOCK: No. No, he wasn’t really, was he? JOHN: And frankly, a bloody awful cabbie. SHERLOCK: Yeah, that’s true. A very bad cabbie. You should’ve seen the route we took here. JOHN: Stop it, we can’t giggle. It’s a bloody crime scene, stop. SHERLOCK: Don’t blame me. You shot him! JOHN: You could maybe keep your voice down a bit. JOHN: Sorry. Sorry, just … nerves. SHERLOCK: Sorry. JOHN: You were going to take the damn pill, weren’t you? SHERLOCK: Course I wasn’t. Playing for time. Knew you’d show up. JOHN: No, you didn’t. That’s how you get your kicks, isn’t it? Risking your life to prove you’re clever. SHERLOCK: Why would I do that? JOHN: Because you’re an idiot.
youtube
N°2 Sherlock and John (1x1; Angelo's restaurant).
JOHN: People don’t have arch-enemies. SHERLOCK: I’m sorry? JOHN: In real life. There are no archenemies in real life, it doesn’t happen. SHERLOCK: Doesn’t it? Sounds a bit dull. JOHN: So who was that guy? SHERLOCK: What do real people have then? In their real lives? JOHN: Friends. People they know. Peoplethey like, people they don’t like…Girlfriends, boyfriends. SHERLOCK: Yes, well as I was saying… Dull! JOHN: So. You don’t have a girlfriend then? SHERLOCK: A girlfriend? No. Not really my area. JOHN: Oh. Oh, right… Do you have a boyfriend? Which is fine, by the way. SHERLOCK: I know it’s fine. JOHN: So you’ve got a boyfriend then? SHERLOCK: No. JOHN: Right. Okay. Unattached. Like me. Fine, good. SHERLOCK: John, you should know, I consider myself married to my work, and while I’m flattered by your interest I’m really not looking for any kind of… JOHN: No, no, I wasn’t asking you out. No! I’m just saying, it’s all fine! SHERLOCK: Good.

I'm curious about your opinion about 'a discussion' about the Doctor saying in Survivors of the Flux: "Earth has been shielded from the Flux, but it'll be vulnerable. It'll become a target. If the Flux is destroying the universe, if planets and stars are being wiped out, there will be displaced creatures who need a home. Somewhere to take over." Mostly due to how I've seen it being said to be the Doctor expressing anti-refugee sentiment, especially the usage of 'take over'.
i've sat on this one because it depends Entirely on how this ~discussion~ happened. Your grammatical choices in writing this ask do not fill me to the brim with confidence, however.
Anyway.
If we're having an on the level discussion on linguistics and phraseology where we talk about how innocuous turns of phrase like 'take over' (mice took over my loft once, it sucked) have been co-opted as very not innocent phrases, and how it would have been better if they'd made it verbally explicit that they meant a colonization like something along the lines of what the Sontarans literally already did in Liverpool a couple of episodes ago then... You know, I may even agree? I do think contextually it's clear what they're saying here but hell, might as well be on the nose. If people are gonna accuse the era of spelling everything out for people, they might as well have done so.
However, if we're being cunning enough to ignore all context available in both that A) this whole era is a criticism of treatment of refugees AND simultaneously even more so a scathing criticism of colonialism, all to genuinely spout that they'd suddenly, in one of the last couple of episodes, do a step-heel-turn and deliberately say fuck them refugees that are gonna come steal all our jobs or something then... I mourn our good friend, Nuance McNuance. Such a good guy. Miss him so much. Gone too soon.
This line did not happen in a vacuum and should not be considered like it did.
(this is bringing me Back to people who complained that war of the sontarans had inconsistent morals. No. Actually it was just giving the thumbs up to beating the shit out of violent colonizers and also saying to stop waging pointless stupid war and getting people killed for no reason other than ego. Oh the death of nuance.)
Anyway, like i said, it depends on how this was said. Discussing linguistics choices is a totally normal port of fandom call, but ignoring context both of the scene and era at large to Choose to interpret in such a way that contradicts the themes and morals of an entire era of the show is... Well. We'll highball and say it's uncharitable.
(and since when does the Doctor refer to somebody being Nice as a Creature??? If we're digging in linguistically already then that is. Not a thing.)
You know that post going around saying that a person saying they support something but doing so using "bad" language is Far better than the person who uses the up to date appropriate terms, but is supporting a fucked up message? How in such cases sentiment is where you look because that is Far more important than linguistic choices? Yeah. I'm still far more worried about the zygon two parter, thanks (but i'm not gonna talk about That one bc i'd have to watch it again and hell no).
They're talking about daleks, and cybermen, and sontarans, and whatever other species may make like the british empire and colonize. This is clear, frankly, to the point you don't Need to think about it.
The conversation is about phrasing, which could be improved but is not, you know, Horrifyingly dire as it's obvious what they meant.
Incidentally, due to context, if said line had been said in Moffat's era i'd be Way more leery because of some unfavourable context in his era.
And, to conclude;
In the words of Fred Jones in Scooby Doo, Monsters Unleashed
"I think coolsville sucks"
#sapphichymns#dw shit#idk#i hope shoving that scooby doo quote there makes sense to anybody Not me#it makes sense to me#somethingsomething removing context to deliberately support an uncharitable take somethingsomething

you’re so right! and the bit about companion writing or the lack thereof rather lmao. you’re telling me this all happened while rose was just standing off to the side. you think ten would run off and just abandon the companion who he’s incredibly attached to and desperately doesn’t want to lose just cause “reinette and him are equals cause they’re both educated and also she is rich” or whatever bullshit from that bts was. what the hell. i deeply dislike that. it positions rose as somehow lesser for her background and completely ignores rose’s role as a companion and the things she has done to help the doctor himself and others. oh, so she should just be thrown away because she’s not “his match” or a super smart time lord? ten doesn’t give a shit about that. do you know nothing moffat. why are you so insistent on throwing everything down the drain? there is this character that loves so strongly and deeply and you go lol! no. rich french girl
it’s not even a good emotional payoff. yes she died. that’s so sad but we don’t know this character. we just met her. as a child. .and now they have deep love? i’m not buying it. you just made a weird and uncomfortable episode.
also..why do you sit down and go oh i will write an episode where the doctor meets a girl and then in the future she’s madly in love with him! and then you have people saying that it’s not creepy at all like what. i apologise for bringing this up again but gitf truly upsets me so much and that episode should burn. its so bad
god literally all of this. and atp i feel like the empty child/the doctor dances being that good was sort of an accident bc how are you gonna write nine and rose without understanding that rose's importance is not in spite of her background it's because of it. the doctor should not give a fuck about someone being their intellectual equal because they would become an infinitely less interesting character otherwise. painting them as inherently aristocratic or of a higher "rank" somehow rather than as an outcast from that society that feels more belonging on earth is! certainly!! a choice!!! (i have beef w the caretaker in twelve's run for many many reasons and a couple of them are bc of this).
the resolution to gitf is so fucking stupid too bc why the hell can't you use your actual fucking time machine to travel to a time when she's not dead and see her again. i can't even say this episode is well constructed bc it fails on its most important emotional beat. it is the only one in ten's whole run where i cannot think of any explanation to justify why he's acting like that. he is so ooc and it is so out of place in his arc and WHY is it so popular have you all lost your minds. it has a luxury of being placed so early in s2, like it had the potential to do some very interesting character work with ten and rose, but instead it drove itself off a cliff and went against what was already established in like. the first 4 episodes of ten era. that should be a record or something

who is your favorite iteration of the doctor to be shipped with river?
I thought a lot about my answer to this, and unfortunately I am going to give the BIGGEST cop-out of a response and say that I can't actually choose between Eleven and Twelve 😭😭
Just for the sake of having an answer, I'll say Twelve, just because he's my favorite Doctor. (And as much as I love it when characters are so broken up about losing people they love that they can't even talk about it--i.e. series 7 Eleven--I do very much appreciate the fact that we got to see Twelve actually consistently grieve onscreen. Also don't TALK to me about how the specific type of goodness he was able to successfully impart to Missy-about helping someone even when there's little to no chance of it succeeding, of getting anything good out of it for yourself, or of the other person ever knowing about it-CAME DIRECTLY FROM RIVER.)
But I really don't have like. A Specific Preference. I skew more toward the Doctors we've seen River interact with onscreen (and specifically during the Moffat Era because as everyone knows it's my favorite, lol), but I've really liked the fic I've read of her with Eight, and some of the stuff in the supplementary materials has gotten me to come around on her with Ten as well (I am notably not a Particularly Huge Fan of Ten). And I also even wrote a story once about her and Thirteen (that I then orphaned later for very stupid reasons). (It's here, if anyone's interested.)
All this being said, I wouldn't have fallen in love with this ship as much as I have if Eleven/River didn't exist. Twelve/River sees them both finally on the same page, and the whole "HE WOULDN'T BE IN LOVE ENOUGH TO BE STANDING [IN DANGER] WITH ME (*has actually been in the middle of said danger the entire time because he is in love enough*) was...look, that CHANGED MY BRAIN. PERMANENTLY. But I don't think people appreciate how truly DERANGED Eleven and River are.
She insults him/makes him look stupid and he just goes like this -> 😍. He starts accepting his interest in her WHEN HE LEARNS SHE'S IN PRISON FOR MURDER (probably for murdering him). They get so caught up in flirting (over River being A Scary Person specifically) that they completely forget that their best friend/family member is in the room with them and also in extreme danger. She expresses her affection by shooting his ridiculous hats off of his head. "Are you married/are you asking/yes." (*cue the most charmed expression on his face to ever exist*) "It's a shame you were busy that day" (<-because she had POISONED HIM AND HE WAS DYING). "And unlike me, she really doesn't mind shooting people, I shouldn't like that, kind of do a bit." "You graffiti-ed the oldest cliff face in the universe!"/"Well you wOuLdN't aNsWeR yOuR pHoNe." "You've got that face on again"/"What face?"/"The 'he's hot when he's clever' face"/"This is my normal face"/"Yes it is." "I do NOT sneak out at night to parties with RIVER SONG"/"How is she?"/"Fine. 😊"
His response to someone bringing her up and mentioning that she tried to kill him is "totally married her XD." She confessed her love to him via "getting the whole universe to mention how much they need him and agreed to marry him and he's still like, "Oh, gotta go check my fucking hair before I say hello to her again" in TATM. (Fun fact, the "Sorry honey, traffic was hell" line was originally, "Traffic was a bitch" which would have been the like. Highest-level curse word we've ever seen this man say, and it would have been in the context of trying to cleverly greet River which AGAIN, DERANGED BEHAVIOR.)
Fixed point that would destroy the universe if it were messed with? Too bad! Not if she thinks she has to kill him! "I'LL SUFFER IF I HAVE TO KILL YOU, MORE THAN EVERY LIVING THING IN THE UNIVERSE" OH MY GOOOODDDDDDDDD. (<-Worth noting that he calls her out over this for all of about two minutes before deciding the best way out of the situation is having an impromptu wedding.) She tells him TO HIS FACE "When I was little, I wanted to marry you" and then ALMOST INTENTIONALLY PERMANENTLY KILLS HIM LIKE TWO MINUTES LATER. He's dying on the floor in Berlin and still has the energy to go absolutely FERAL over the idea of someone hurting her. In the series 7 finale, she isn't even tangible and only exists through a conduit in Clara's head and he goes, "Too bad! I can hold you and kiss you and talk with you because I miss you, screw the actual laws of physics." (And then he's like, "Hmm, I probably look stupid right now. Oh well, back to talking to my wife, who I refused to say goodbye to for God Knows How Long because I would have been too sad.")
HE FALLS FOR HER POISONING GAMBIT BECAUSE HE'S HAVING TOO MUCH FUN FLIRTING WITH HER.
DUDE.
(Like, Twelve is also Deranged™ about her too, as evidenced by responding to her threat of cutting out his organs in alphabetical order with, "Which alphabet" and being jealous at the MOST inopportune times and, while in the middle of them fighting over who gets to risk sacrificing themselves, saying, "NOT ONE LIVING THING IS WORTH YOU" which is. Sure a line!!! That sure lives in my head rent-free!!!!! Also they have a Bonding Moment™ about carrying a severed head around in a bag. But the absolute INSANITY that goes on between River and Eleven is. Incredible.)
.........uhhhhh this. This got away from me. I also didn't really answer your question. Sorry? (<-Not actually sorry.)
#doctor x river#your daily DERANGED posting about this ship courtesy of me enjoy#multi t(ASK)ing#mel screams about The Weird Little Space Show again#otp: you are always here to me#LITERALLY every single thing I look for in fiction can be traced back to these two I genuinely DO NOT THINK YOU UNDERSTAND#REMEMBER WHEN SHE CHANGES HER WHOLE LIFE IN LIKE 5 MINUTES BECAUSE SHE REALIZED THAT THE PERSON HE AND HER PARENTS WERE SO FOND OF#WAS /HER/???? EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS ACTING JUST. THE FARTHEST FROM A GOOD PERSON WE'VE EVER SEEN HER ACT??? EVEN THOUGH SHE ALMOST#/INTENTIONALLY KILLED HIM/ BUT THEY STILL ALL CARED SO MAYBE THAT MEANS SHE MATTERS??!?!?? REMEMBER THAT?!?!?!?!?!????!?!!!!!!!!#okay I'm normal now I promise (<-absolute lie. biggest lie in the universe.)

So, have you watched the new Doctor Who episodes? What do you think of them if yes?
Yes
I LOVED IT ALL SO MUCH
Hugely relieved that the nostalgia tour is now over; I don't think my neurons could tolerate much more of it
I think my favourite is still The Star Beast because I enjoy when Doctor Who gets all hamfisted about social issues. I'm a sucker for that!!
But oh man, oh man, the Giggles!!! The music sequence! The ending!!! AHHHHH
And then the fucking. The direction on Wild Blue Yonder, fuuuuck. Like, I expected the actors to be amazing; it's Tennant and Tate. To describe them as "good actors" does not capture the skill that they have specifically in working together.
But I was blown away by how well it was directed!! The fucking scenes where you as an audience member are realizing "wait, that's not how the Doctor talks to Donna normally.... WAIT THAT'S NOT THE DOCTOR AT ALL" just. Delicious. Perfectly done. Which is extra wild to me when looking at the dirctero's other credits which are ummm. Not that good, shall we say.
And THEN you find out that the torso-and-head framing of each camera shot was So On Purpose and it just!!!
It was all so good.
Oh man, I know I'm the specific target demographic being pandered to (queer millennials who loved Eccleston, obsessed over Tennant, enjoyed Smith, wandered off during Capaldi, and bounced off Whittaker).
I was always going to love it. It's designed to make me love it!
it's designed to bait with nostalgia. I know that. I recognize it.
But the thing is? Oh my god, the thing is, instead of a nasty little trap, the bait was just to get you SO HYPE for Gatwa.
And it worked. I'm so much more excited for his run than I was beforehand. Like. WAY more hype.
I was excited enough for him that I knew I would watch his Christmas special and probably the first 1-3 episodes of his run.
Now? Just from the little sample we got of the way Gatwa will be carrying this role, in the context of the more child-friendly* approach that earmarks Davies as a Doctor Who showrunner?
I'm SO fucking COMMITTED. I wanna see where they take him. I have always preferred the... the times when DW is like... Cringe? But earnestly cringe? Hamfisted social messages. Monsters that sound absurd until you see then. Monsters that stay absurd even as you're hooked. AMVs as threats.
All that shit is MADE to please me specifically.
AND BUDDY!!!!!!!!!! I AM PLEASED!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot WAIT to see the Situations they're going to put Gatwa's doctor in and watch him get out of them. He has the perfect level of charismatic charm and genuine emotion.
Normally I need to see the Doctor and his Companion interact before I can get a sense of the pathos the actor will bring to the role and how they work off the writing and direction.
But shiiiiiiit, Gatwa came out swinging and I already have SUCH high hopes.
And this hasn't even gotten to how fuckin' diverse the backgrounders were in these specials. They really said, "okay, we have filled these scenes out with too many unmarked people, we need to dial that down." And I know, I know, packing your background with diverse actors (race, gender, ability, etc) while you foreground two white, abled actors that were brought in specifically to be nostalgia bait is, like, on paper it's a bad look.
But they gave those backgrounders each a lot more charm and character in their writing than I was expecting. Everything from Sgt Singh's suspicion loosening to military obedience and Shirley saying "don't make me the problem just go" to Rose reframing her mother's tic into a statement of her own independent power.
(Yes I know Davies has a thing about how he writes moms but listen I'm going to let him have that one)
And fuuuuuuck meeeeee, but they just KEEP saying trans rights, even after The Star Beast ended.
I just really, really enjoyed all 3 so much.
*Child-friendly isn't the right term, but I've gotten through the whole post and I can't figure out better phrasing. What I mean is, under Moffat and Chibnall, Doctor Who was not for children. The show didn't go out of its way to exclude them, but it certainly didn't try to provide education, entertainment or even engagement for them.
Doctor Who is not "a kids show" but critically, it shouldn't be "an adult show" either. It functions at its best as a family show. Something you can watch with your parents and your kids both on the same couch, and everyone enjoy it. This is an absurdly difficult line to walk. It's why Disney had so many years of failure before the renaissance.
And one of the ways people fail to walk that line is by treating children as an afterthought (Chibnall), or not at all (Moffat). Meanwhile, Davies's previous stint as Showrunner did a phenomenal job of bringing up The Horrors in ways that would put adults on edge while letting Children also enjoy the ride.
And the same is true of these 3 episodes.
I think "can kids get really into it too" is an extremely important benchmark for this type of scifi (and, I think it's part of why many modern Star Trek properties are so fucking tedious).

random, unasked-for take #342914.
ive seen some ppl say Rogue was the first episode to "feel like" a (good) quintessential 2005+ era DW episode, despite ironically being written by new writers - except i honestly don't think it's ironic at all. as counterintuitive as it might sound, i think the fresh perspectives are necessary to try and capture that very specific vibe.
put together, rtd & moffat have written 70~ episodes of doctor who. even disregarding burnout, i just feel like... having written so many episodes for so long, you do sort of just get stuck in your own work. not necessarily even in a bad way. it can produce good work if you continue to push yourself.but in doing so, there's this tendency to start to deconstruct the medium youre working with.
its like random comparison here. those epicurious, 3 levels of food videos. so often i see ppl say "oh the level 2 chef's work is so much better. a simple, well-executed meal is so much more enjoyable than something overly elaborate." which isnt a controversial take really. but sometimes for, like, the chef themselves... if theyve literally made a traditional dish and made it a million times over, for their own development and passion, experimentation can be necessary to continue. and also if they understand each of tehe core components far too well, its hard not to start taking different unconventional approaches. thats sort of the nature of it.
and im not saying rtd & moffat have completely mastered the standard dw episode. but i feel like a lot of the episodes this season (and this is also partially to blame for the slashed episode count) have been what would be considered the more Unconventional episode of the seasonin seasons past.
so yes now new writers come in, and they dont have that burnout, or that over-awareness of the shows mechanics and so its like yep. we can get a solid meat and potatoes dw episode. the sort people would be like "this is well-executed and more enjoyable than the previous ones."

What are your thoughts on Amy Pond? Especially in the beginning of season 5 she reminds me of Rose quite a lot. Yet another very young woman, who almost immediately falls for the doctor/ is attracted to him. And similar to Rose she chooses to ignore the fact that she has a boyfriend/ fiance and decides to travel with the doctor instead. Plus she even tries to seduce him. For me it is a similar level of unhealthy obsession.
Also I’m still kinda mad, that the Doctor, when he first met the older Amy Pond in the first episode of the fifth season, didn’t made a comment like: “Oh another ginger.” or “I knew another redhead once…” Idk I’m not a writer, but including a phrase like this, which acknowledges Donna’s important role in the Doctor’s past, would have been the proper thing to do. (However it is likely that I missed such a comment. I’m currently on a rewatch, that doesn’t include all the episodes. So...) I mean they did it with Rose. Ten mentioned her a couple of times after she was gone.
I guess I’m just not a fan of the way characters, mainly female characters, were written during the time Moffat was showrunner.
You would have thought the Doctor would have made some comment about Amy/Amelia being ginger, but he didn't. Quite pointedly so. No doubt fans of Moffat will say the Doctor was too traumatised to mention his last companion; and I would have to agree to disagree with them. It was like Moffat was trying to paper over the previous DW years with thick wallpaper paste.
A few years ago Moffat said that he regretted having Amy try to kiss the Doctor on the eve of her wedding to Rory; but that didn't help because the damage was done long ago.
I only remember ONE reference to Donna throughout Eleven's series, and that was during the "guilt" scene where Donna's cardboard cutout appeared, after images of Rose and Marthe, caused him even more guilt. I also remember Moffat almost stomping over some iconic scenes featuring Donna; like River landing on top of Eleven when she jumped out a window and landed in the Tardis. He just didn't care about Donna, despite the excuse (conjured up by RTD?) used by Twelve for his choice of face.
Anyway, you asked about Amy Pond and what I initially thought of her. Well, I was excited to see the new companion, just like I've always been with Doctor Who, and was ready to love and adore her. I certainly felt that way about young Amelia. And then the policewoman in a miniskirt appeared as the older Amy, and my heart sank.
The choice of costume, job, and (I know I'll get stick for this opinion, but it was immensely offputting) the 'acting skill' displayed by Amy. In fact, my husband still refers to her as "that girl that can't act". I can take bad sets, and dodgy plotlines, but the inability to act turned me right off and I never bothered to see Amy as anything much beyond that. When they encountered The Hungry Earth in series 5, I desperately wanted Nasreen Chaudry to become the new companion instead. Okay, I cheered when Amy got swallowed by the ground because I found her whiny, uninterested and brattish. If it weren't for Rory, I'd have switched off totally.
Okay, the acting improved a bit in series 6, but my interest in Amy didn't. By that point my interest in Rose had long gone too, so I didn't try to compare the two. But I see what you mean. Definitely.

Disclaimer: This post is going to be Anti Moffat for anyone who’s reading and is a fan you’ve been warned.
“The Wedding of River Song” is the thirteenth episode and aside from being a boring episode it was, unfortunately, also my least favorite season finale.
The Good: I haven’t watched Classic Who, but I do know the Brigadier is a very important person in the Doctor’s life and I saw his character in one of the episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Having his death in the show to reflect that of the actor’s was incredibly beautiful, and I liked that it seemed to be the moment the Doctor realized it was his time reminding me a lot of Ten and Wilf. The different settings where time is happening all at once looked really cool, and there were some funny jokes especially with Emperor Churchill.
The Bad: I think the reason I feel like I don’t know Amy and Rory that well is b/c instead of developing them as characters for two seasons now we keep getting fake/different versions of them, there’s always a plot twist of “oh actually that wasn’t the real version of them” and frankly it’s tiring. This finale felt like a rehashed poorly done version of previous concepts. All the “voices” saying they’ll help reminded me of everyone thinking of the Doctor at the end of S3, and the different realities reminded me of the end of S5. The Doctor leaving Dorium’s head again in that place was horrible, why not take him to his home or at least some fancy hotel?
The River storyline being the absolute worst: That comment about how River spends her days in prison and her nights with him was disgusting, if she didn’t really kill him why on earth is the Doctor making sure she’s serving time?? The fact that we’ve seen her slip in and out of prison easily so many times leads to the horrifying implication that the Doctor just takes her out whenever he pleases like she’s some sort of...idk but that was awful. I genuinely did go into Moffat’s era trying to keep an open mind when it came to her character b/c I was under the impression it was going to be an interesting love story with their timelines not matching. But this has fallen apart in the most horrible ways with everything regarding River seemingly being tacked on w/o any actual thought. How in the world did River convince Ten to trust her in the library? He said that she knew his name, but here he didn’t actually tell her his name...unless later he tells her to fulfill that paradox. But even then I really thought that he would grow to love her in his own way, but the way he treated her here was awful “I don’t want to marry you” and “you embarrass me”. The fact that she loves him when he acts like that with her is probably my least favorite thing Moffat could have ever done. On that same note River saying no one loves the Doctor more than her would feel far more impactful if we actually saw them interacting more in a healthy way, instead we’re just constantly told that they are going on trips and we’re to assume they enjoy spending time with each other when on screen I’ve never once gotten the sense that he actually cares for her. She wanted to rewrite time itself instead of killing him which I suppose I could understand her doing if they’d had a more believable love story, but her relationship with him seems more obsessive and toxic than anything. She knew them touching would cause time to move forward and fix itself, but she wouldn’t allow it until he married her essentially blackmailing him. And Eleven only marrying her to whisper his escape plan seemed horribly manipulative as well, it’s obvious it matters far more to her than him and for him to play into that obsession seems really dark. And I’m not even sure if that counts as their wedding if he didn’t tell her his name? I don’t know enough about the lore, but I was under the impression from the library episode that it was a requirement.
The Unresolved: Apparently there’s a bigger story to tell with the Trenzalore stuff.
Overall I feel disappointed, I have now watched six series of DW and my biggest concern is that I was so unbelievably bored during this episode and several others in this series. The Doctor telling Churchill how everything played out felt like someone was reading the script out to me instead of me watching things play out on screen. I had a really rough time getting through these episodes, but I’m still staying optimistic that it was a dud and next series is better. I think the thing I feel the saddest about is that I don’t find myself loving the characters as much as I used to in the past, Amy has really grown on me, but even then I don’t feel the same attachment I do to the other companions I’ve seen.
#doctor who#anti moffat#moffat salt#anti river song#anti eleventh doctor#dw watch#my ramblings#the wedding of river song#i felt an insane amount of pity for river in this episode#the fact that i really thought it was going to be some incredibly love story#when it's just sad

got carried away writing a book review of the day of the doctor so here u go i guess
the episode itself is. fine I guess. there are some good moments & its fun seeing ten & eleven interact and there's some good angsting etc. like the episode is fairly solid even though it does that typical moffat retroactively-changing-massive-parts-of-canon thing that he liked doing. its not perfect but whatever, there are lots of good bits! The Novelisation. Is. Dare I Say Kinda Bad.
(also I should point out that this is written by steven moffat who was the showrunner and wrote the script for the episode like he should know what he's doing)
it starts off with the doctor narrating in a typical slightly silly pretentious fourth-wall breaking kinda thing and you're like okay this is sort of cool yup very eleven that feel like him. the narration switches between the doctor talking about himself in third person cos a) that's how books work and b) he's just Like That but will slip into first person in select moments to show he's getting caught up in remember events or his feelings and the idea is that you're reading it on psychic paper & it's being beamed into your head telepathically or whatever and that's cool!! that's a good idea!
HOWEVEr. there are three (mainly) versions of the doctor in the book the war doctor the tenth doctor and the eleventh. and YOUD THINK THEY JUST CALL THEM WAR DOCTOR TEN AND ELEVEN like normal people but noooooooo depending on whose pov you're in he gives them all silly nicknames based on how various characters perceive them which is really hard to follow, or just call all of the The Doctor, which is their name yeah but like ??? which one is talking???? you kinda have to guess sometimes??? added to that is that there are shapeshifters in this one so there's another layer of 'is this the real guy or the Copy Guy' as well as BAD WOLF being there (who isn't rose, its bad wolf, but it isn't her either because it's a sentient superweapon that's talking to him that just LOOKS like rose.), there's just all in all a lot of Multiple Versions Of The Same Few People which can be hard to keep track of. like it's just confusing to read sometimes. not too hard even if the endless silly nicknames for ten & eleven get annoying a bit.
and there's a bunch of inconsistencies too (and yes I know I know this is the who needs continuity show) between this and the episode and I guess moffat can do what he likes adapting his own stuff but he kinda missed out some good bits? doesn't even have the 'this is his grunge phase' line and some of the stuff that makes ten and eleven's dynamic so funny but has all these random extra scenes of kate lethbridge-stewart and osgood that are just ?????? we didn't need that there??? it wasn't reeeeally adding anything??? and in the episode ten and eleven cant see bad wolf/rose/the moment ar all but here they see it for a bit?? but like no reaction really from either of them even though ten at LEaST should have had a visceral moment of loss there or something. idk.
and then at the end where there's that curator guy who is tom baker and its kinda I think supposed to be ambiguous as to whether its really four or not or some kind of coincidence but in the book it's like 'ahah! i was really narrating as four all along!' but like how is that even possible sorry I know this is the time travel show but why is he there and what is the implication? i think it's cos 11 says 'oh I could retire and be a curator' and then four is all old n stuff and Is the curator but like???? he regenerated?? is this a ten/fourteen type situation of the far future like a decade before they came up with that and then why is four in 2013??? what?? idk did they just really really want tom baker in it?
and then there's more foreshadowing of peter capaldi as twelve and then ten says 'i don't want to go' again which you're supposed to find sad but is fitted in in the most awkward way possible like. he would not say that no one would have said that sentence just then sorry guys. the ending feels kinda rushed more so in the book cos the narrator (four?? eleven??? is literally Not Paying Attention to the last conversation and then there's a page that says HELP ME over a bunch of tally marks ?????? idk man????? also there's all this stuff in the comedic chapter interlude narration that's referring to 'chapter nine' 'stop trying to find chapter nine' is he just saying 'yeah ok the ninth doctor's not in this one sorry guys'???? i think so??
cos it starts with chapter eight which is the eighth doctor getting regenerated into the war doctor (a soldier in the time war, the very thing he was saying he'd never become) (more of Moffat retrospectively Majorly Altering Canon) which was uhm. quite the scene cos in the episode he chooses it?? but in the book it says he was forced to by the sisterhood of karn???? what???????????? if that's so then why isn't that made Very Clear in the episode???? girl what???? there's lots of references to classic who which is fun but then he goes and says 'oh yeah btw one and two were actually colourblind that's why 1963-69 was in black and white' like okay. that's a slightly stupid writing decision which every other author has managed to ignore because it doesn't matter that they were in black and white cos the show started airing IN THE SIXTIES you can accept the limitations of historical content into canon!! he did the exact same thing in twice upon a time when he made One make sexist jokes so he could point out how progressive the show was Now which actually backfires Majorly because it makes The Doctor sexist instead of making The White British Colonial Men Who Wrote It In 1960s England sexist like ausgnauhgnshansghn CMON! and on that note Why Is This STuff So Sexualised like????? there was no need to say that the doctor found clara pretty, or rose/bad wolf/the moment/whatever, ten ends up marrying queen Elizabeth I which is kinda funny ngl but some of the things eleven says about that! is so weird! and unnecessary! and theres the fuckinhnsaa scene with the comparing the size of the sonic screwdrivers which is SO BAD LIKE YUCKKKK WHAT WHY WOULD YOU PUT THAT IN THERE ITS A FAMILY SHOW DUDE and like all the women at some point have a Comment on their appearance except for maybe kate lethbridge-stewart but idk. ahjsajnsajnsan. ick. and moffat just changes canon around all the time! gallifrey is gone again! but not really! but now it's back for real! the hybrid! (still don't know what was up with that) the impossible girl! mels/melody/river song! why!
and like some of it was so good!! the three doctors who are all the same person but not the same person, and some of the character writing was really really good & the interactions between different regenerations and like i Knew sometimes when ten was speaking cos the way he reacts to his own issues is so predictable (good predictable. like he has A Way He Acts its fascinating) and how they talk to each other (themself) as a representation of what the doctor is always struggling with about the decisions he's made. and i love the 'time lord art is bigger on the inside' bit that's really cool & when the war doctor starts the calculations and then eleven can finish them cos its four hundred years later even though they're in the same room together, like that's cool! moffat understands how to use timey-wimey stuff in the time travel show and he does it very well, a lot more (and better) than russell t davies does. but i watch this episode and think what no i really like this one and then i think about it and There Are Problems!!
anyways. uhm. haha. my favourite show 👍
#day of the doctor#doctor who#i wont tag this as moffat that feels mean. i dont vehemently dislike him i swear i just have Questions
