I was only today years old when I realized that Trafalgar Law's names are probably references to two battles that led in our real life history to a certain emperor (Napoleon)'s defeat.
*arrives 10 years late with a meta post because of a realization*
uhh Dressrosa spoilers, I guess.
Trafalgar and Waterloo... Water Law.
Tumblr media
In One Piece world that emperor being Doflamingo, who suffered two major loses thanks to Law's existence:
First being cca 13 years ago from the main storyline - at the Minion Island where Corazon managed to get the Op-op devil fruit for Law and saving his life from Doflamingo. On that island, Doflamingo lost both Corazon and the devil fruit he wanted to much to get his hands on, as well as Law, someone who he wanted to use as the sacrifice to get the immortality via the devil fruit's powers.
Tbh I haven't really heard about the Trafalgar battle before today. When I first heard about Trafalgar Law as character while I started to read One Piece only cca 5 months ago, I only thought "huh, isn't that a square in England, I was there on a trip once" but didn't look more into it now.
So I just skimmed throught the wiki pages of those battles, I don't know all the details, I don't want to compare it too much, but some maybe similarities/parallels that piqued my interest:
The Battle of Trafalgar were the spanish-france forces against english navy, and Donquixote/Dressrosa arc including all those spanish themes, as well as Law being from the North Blue (where Sanji and Mont Blanc Noland are/were also from) being a bit influenced by France, plays interesting role when this happened in North Blue as a prelude to what would 13 years later happen in Dressrosa (the birdcage, Doflamingo's rule, the puppets, etc).
This part of the Trafalgar battle describing the british was at first outnumbered, that the spanish had more ships along with one of their biggest one:
Tumblr media
reminded me of how Corazon himself faced with the whole Donquixote family, including Doflamingo:
Tumblr media
and some more interesting similarities how the "hero" of the battle died even before it ended:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but thanks to his informations, the Navy later arrived, and Law got away.
Tumblr media
(even on the wiki of the Trafalgar battle there were mentions of some false informations, previous pursuits of the ships and admirals etc, so that vibe kind of fits.)
I haven't read much about the Waterloo battle, except how known it is for being the final defeat of Napoleon, by Coalition armies - which would nicely parallel to Law and Luffy starting their own Alliance during Dressrosa, and thanks to that it caused for Luffy to be there to beat Doflamingo once and for all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some other small details I noticed:
The Don Quixote book was apparently first published in two parts, one in 1605 and the other in 1615.
The battle of Trafalgar happened in 1805, and the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
I found one person even connecting the date when was published the chapter of Doflamingo's deafeat in Dressrosa - 18th of June, 2015, which is the same date only 200 years later after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.
I love that in some sense both battles have in common water, and for the One Piece world that is connected with pirates and ships - with the historical aspects the battle of Trafalgar being a naval battle, and Waterloo for the Water in Trafalgar D. Water Law - he concealed his full name from Doflamingo for all those years, his secret name as well as the will of the Ds. - for our world a possible reference if one looks more that he really was meant to be Doflamingo's downfall.
There's just something beautiful about Law's whole existence to be a sort of a foretelling of the fall of one of the emperors of the sea, just by having these names. And it's not just the names of his, but the parallels to the situations and results of the incidents taking place at those locations.
It's literally a middle finger to Doflamingo:

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

rewatching 1899 because I sold my soul to Bo and Jantje and im on ep.3 around 56:38
Daniel points out the fog and how it’s “almost like someone sent it here to stop that madman” (paraphrasing) and the way Maura defends him 😭. I can’t help but feel bag for Daniel. I love him but Eyk and Maura are my beloveds they’re my otp I cannot help it.
Anyways I think it’s really interesting how the conversation plays out ESPECIALLY after the scene with Ángel and Ramiro; again paraphrasing because I don’t have much time to find the exact quotes, but Ángel says something along the lines of “you can’t change the nature of things, I will always be who I am and you will always be who you are” and thinking abt the true husband/key eyk theory makes me want to implode. Maura is constantly choosing Eyk, she does in the beginning by opening up to him the way she does, (I’m sure there are faults in my statements but like I said they’re my otp and I’m just excited to ramble about them) and even though their letters all say trust no one they have this weird invisible pull to each other. Also before I joined tumblr, everytime I rewatched it I would always focus on Sebastian. I think it’s really interesting (I could be looking to much into this of course) that some of the time when Eyk and Maura are interrupted it’s because of Sebastian— and he always kinda has this look or behavior around them. It just makes me think if hypothetically he had seen this happen over and over again, he definitely sees patterns. Again with what Henry says, I don’t need to state the line because we all know it— takes me back to this same statement of “you can’t change the nature of things” god I love the dialogue in this show.
I just think personally, there are a lot of things I know I choose to exaggerate knowing Jantje and Bo write very with the flow of the show— (flashbacks to andreas saying he stopped trying to understand Jantje a long time ago gives me a giggle) but the way Eyk and Maura behave around each other is no coincidence I won’t except any other answers. They love each other.

who is dylan in welsh mythology??
ANON, THIS IS MY DREAM ASK!!!!! WHSHSHSSB
Okay, so Dylan, or to give him his full name, Dylan Ail Don (or Eil Ton, depending on which translation of The Mabinogion you read. Basically, the Second Wave) is the nephew/implied son of Gwydion and the defo son of Aranrhod. Gwydion is a magician and God of stories, bards, and an all-around tricksy bastard, and Aranrhod is the goddess of the moon and Woman Who Wants To Be Left Alone. (Eternally valid.)
They are also SIBLINGS.
That's the family of Dôn, babyyyyy.
Now, Dylan's birth is the only real concise thing we have about him as well as his demise. So essentially after Gwydion has done some heinous shit to his uncle, Math's, footholder, Goewin, he declares he needs a new one. See, Math has a curious condition where exactly dies if his feet touch the ground unless Gwynedd goes to war. So, to combat this his feeties need to be held by a virgin. Gwydion suggests his sister, Aranrhod, as Math's new footholder and Math heartily agrees.
Except... Gwydion is LYING about his sister's state. (Colour me shocked.)
Aranrhod, to prove she's a virgin, has to walk over metal rod. That's fine and dandy, you might think, it's a lil rod. It's harmless. Except it's an enchanted rod that can tell if you're a virgin or not. To everybody's shock and Aranrhod's shame when she walks over the rod a baby is born, fully formed.
This lil lad is Dylan! 🥳
After him, a 'lump of flesh' is born which Gwydion duly takes up.
Aranrhod flees, wanting nothing to do with her kids, and Math takes Dylan up. The Mabinogion essentially says that they 'had the boy baptised, and as they baptised him he plunged into the sea. And immediately when he was in the sea, he took its nature, and swam as well as the best fish that was therein. And for that reason was he called Dylan Ail Don.'
So this boy is having the time of his LIFE. Presumably, because his tales are lost to us he had lots of shenanigans, some even with his brother, Lleu Llaw Gyffes (said lump of flesh that Gwydion bore away). Unfortunately, Dylan has somehow by accident inflamed his Uncle Gofannon's anger. All we have about his death is a mere sentence which reads: 'And the blow whereby he came to his death, was struck by his uncle Gofannon. The third fatal blow was it called.'
Now, it's said that 'the clamour of the waves dashing upon the beach is the expression of their longing to avenge their son.' And in North Wales, near the Menai Strait Dylan has a rock that bears his name, Pwynt Maen Dylan, while the sound of the sea as it rushes up the mouth of the River Conwy is called, 'Dylan's death-groan.'
Scholars can't agree on whether he's a local sea god who was simply added to the Mabinogion by a later storyteller - which I personally believe because the tale is set in Gwynedd, and compared to Lleu he is very much somebody who is connected to just Gwynedd, whereas Lleu is a Big Lad in Welsh mythology - or if he was Lleu's darker double. Also, Welsh mythology has a sea god already, Llŷr, so why would they need a wave god too? Not to disparage Dylan because I will literally fistfight anybody who thinks he's rubbish character, but I do not think you'd need a diddy wave god if that was the case.
Anyways, he is perhaps the most mad-cap version of 'local boy done good.'
This is his rock BTW:
Tumblr media
'Where the waves make a sullen sound' as 'The Stanzas of the Graves' states.
Anyways, anyone this was a SUPERB QUESTION EJDJDJDKDKD

One Piece #758 (vol. 76)
Hang on, I need a second... Usopp, who usually takes credit even for things he didn't do, who respects Luffy's good opinion so much that he credited his faith in his crew as the reason they kept fighting, that he agreed to work with a random, dangerous Warlord in a plan to take out an Emperor of the Sea just because Luffy complimented him, saying it doesn't matter if he never finds out that Usopp saved his life, as long as he's safe and can keep going...
Not that it's unprecedented for Usopp to do something like this - in fact, it's one of the first things we see him do. He also kept Kuro's invasion of his home village a secret. And maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I don't think it's completely irrelevant that Syrup Village's existence such as it was (a peaceful and carefree place that, if anything, could use someone like Usopp causing mischief to liven it up every once in a while) depended on the secrecy. Here he just thought, "I saved you, that's enough".
(Not to mention the comparison - this would be putting Luffy on the same level as his home village, the place he grew up in.)

(I think I just accidentally made an kinitopet au…) ANYWAYYYY , here’s the origin of the KÏÑĪŤØŁM! some lore drama problem that I will not speak of (yet) caused this silly billy known as Kinito to turn into the Kinitolm that you probably already knew about. Character species : Sam : The Starlet anemone , Jade : The Mane jellyfish / Lion’s Mane jellyfish and Kinito : the olm ! How interesting…
(Jade does also wear a pearl necklace occasionally ,how cute!)
