LAST TIME ON MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II: Casey’s being a little bitch and bringing villains into Angel Grove and destroying the Command Center and cutting off the rangers from the Morphin Grid.  And NOT because he’s under a spell.  But he has a good reason for it, honest!!!!!  (He does not.)  At least Shredder’s here now to be the newer, cooler Casey.  MMPR/TMNT II #3!

How many parts of your tmnt fan continuity are just parts of other continuities you like, and how many are your own headcanons? Like, the ratio of percentage, I'm curious of the ratio of remix to original

OOOOUGH GOOD QUESTION

So I'd say a good percentage is just tidbits of stuff I like from the main IDW comics, MMPR x TMNT comics, and the 2012 cartoon with some similar aesthetics taken from the og cartoon and Rise. But mainly the 3 first ones because those are my favorite TMNT medias so far!

I definitely like the art direction of 2012 and IDW more than Rise, so I'm snatching that but I'm also snagging the different turtle species from Rise because it's cute!

Also art style i'm talking about:

I AM TRAINING MYSELF TO DRAW LIKE THIS. BUT MY WRIST INJURY AND CHRONIC PAIN IS MAKING ME STAGNATE.

As for original stuff...? It always made me sad that these kids just can't be normal teenagers, so I'm being a wee bit self indulgent and making them slowly be more and more exposed and accepted by the populace of their city. I mean, cmon, these people have marvel-esque villains every other week, also canonical mob bosses and alien invasions in 2012 and IDW, let the teenage superheroes be loved and accepted. Friendly neighborhood escaped unethical science experiments!

Also, yoinking Pepperoni from IDW because I'd DIE FOR HER.

Splinter isn't mutated in this, while he does have mutagen-related chemical burns and other injuries in his arms, he's still a person. They also still live in the sewers because Splinter can't risk the turtles being seen in fear of what might happen to them. Def projecting how certain adults around me talked about my autism and undiagnosed ADD growing up since, yeah, definitely felt like I was a mutant freak at times. Splinter isn't ableist or anything btw, this is just me prpjecting how I felt growing up with a heavily stigmatized condition onto the turtles. (Also not talking about my parents, talking about the parents of other kids, relatives, and teachers. My parents are p great)

The turtles will also be ND coded because yes.

I'm still getting all the gritty plot details together but I'd say the ratio between tidbits from canon vs headcanons and og stuff is uh... 60:40, 6:4, at the moment at least.

World's Finest - I don't even like Kingdom Come but still intrigued on what Waid and Mora are going to be doing.

Captain America - First issue was very familiar for a Steve Rogers story. I think it's working so far.

Cyborg - Kick their asses, Cyborg!

Daredevil - Matt's a priest! Don't know how I feel about that.

Dark X-Men - I just wanna see this team do more things.

Ghost Rider - I like Talia.

Green Arrow - I'm just here for Green Arrow shenannigans.

Hawkgirl - Um, when did T+ become 13+. Skimmed through because I'm behind and I'm a little surprised some stuff got approved. Not that I have a problem, just surprised.

Immortal Thor - Ewing Immortal book and Ewing Thor book - I'm going to check it out.

Jay Garrick: The Flash - Jay is a dad can be good, but I'm a little apprehensive.

JL vs. Godzilla vs. Kong - This is so stupid but I am so here for it.

MMPR - I don't care for Death Ranger. Lot of things trying to be accomplished here with too many characters. This is MIGHTY MORHPIN power rangers - not a lore book. Wanna do a lore book - do a lore book! Also, Matt still sucks.

The Alternates - More Minor Threats world-building.

Moon Knight - 8-ball as a supporting character is still funny. Sabbatini still makes this book stand out in my opinion.

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant - More of Kamala's mutant romp.

Radiant Black - Might drop after Catalyst War. Depends.

Sensational She-Hulk - More Jen! That's nice!

Steelworks - They're fighting a giant robot! Heeheehee!

Superman - Dropped for now, might pick up again at a later date. More of me needing to drop something.

TMNT - What a wild ride!

LAST TIME ON MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II:  Casey’s still being a little bitch but he has ~~~~good reasons~~~~~ which leaves us without ranger powers.  So how are we coping with this loss?  For the Turtles, it’s taking a field trip to Dimension X with our new best friend Shredder.  For The MMPRs?  WITH FURRY POWERRRRRRRR  - in MMPR/TMNT II #4!  

- I usually don’t post too much in the main recaps that were already covered in the previews but since the previews basically had all the Mutant Ranger content in this issue (boo hiss) you get them again

- I love them sm and I hope they actually get the spotlight in the finale

- uh huh yeah i’m sure this is super necessary SKIP

- sorry Casey but you’re nothing next to the power of the girlboss

- On the one hand this is the most engaged I’ve been with Rita in years because she’s pointing out how stupid this whole Casey subplot was but on the other hand........she’s pointing out how stupid this whole Casey subplot was 

- Dimension X really did have their own rangers!  And they’re exactly in our colors!  That’s convenient.  Give Leo orange just to be funny

- Though admittedly, while I love them, always picking the same six MMPR monsters is getting a little tiresome.  Godzilla vs MMPR giving the spotlight to Rhinoblaster is feeling like a radical choice at this point

- yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah Ryan doesn’t understand Pumpkin Rapper the way Kyle did.  Ryan.  Do you know how many rhymes I made from “shell” off the top off my head just in the process of writing this passage.  It’s not hard

- Karai sweetie I am so so so sorry you were nerfed this entire series for dumb old Casey you would have rocked the Ranger X look so hard and actually did things of importance

- also I already talked about the Dimension X Turtles in other posts so I won’t repeat what I’ve said here.  We’ll see plenty of them in the final issue, don’t worry 

- I need you to look at this panel again.  Romance is beating the shit out of mutant alligator men  

- I hope the deep shadows here further making Dan’s Splinter design resemble the 2012 Splinter were intentional

MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS / TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1-5 (THAT’S A VERY COMPLICATED TITLE) DECEMBER 2019 - JUNE 2020 BY RYAN PARROTT, SIMONE DI MEO, WALTER BAIAMONTE, IGOR MONTI, DAN MORA, ALESSIO ZONNO

DISCLAIMER: If you are a fan of the MMPR, you would probably score this story higher... after all, it relies A LOT in knowing about Power Rangers... which is not my thing.

Crossovers are usually a marketing ploy to attract readers into buying books they wouldn’t normally try. That is the idea, but in reality, writers in an ongoing hate doing them because it disrupts the story they are telling. When the crossover happens in a mini-series or limited series, it may or not disrupt the ongoings or other books by the company. When the crossover is between two companies (let’s say, DC vs Marvel), the crossover is unlikely to have any lasting effect and no other titles will be affected. So what are you accomplishing with it? Mostly pleasing the fans. And that was the key here. I am not completely ignorant of the Power Rangers, I tried a few episode, and watched their latest movie, but the appeal wasn’t really there for me (maybe that is why it is taking me so long to finish TMNT: Next mutation... the production value is not good at all). But I have to admit, they were very popular and to this day, they continue to release new series (the latest one is being filmed in the country I live on).

So as a TMNT fan, I was still looking forward for this story. But it ended up being a little disappointing anyway. Mostly because of all the Tommy/Tyler drama that I just couldn’t follow. The rest is just a standard team-up. Good guys fight each other. Then team-up. Then villains team-up, then villains betray each other, good guys win. The only entertaining factor in this story is seeing role-reversals and interesting mash-ups.

The “canon” of the story also belongs mostly to the Fred Wolf cartoon, with some few elements from other incarnations (but mostly from the 4kids show, as Karai and the Foot Ninjas are pretty much from that version).

It also had some bad timing... it would have been great to see Jennika in this story (instead of April taking the missing place).

Where the story didn’t impress me, the art shined. I would have to say that it was probably the coloring process that did a lot of heavy lifting, but the art in general looks very flashy and the human figures look good. The turtles look a bit weird, but I have seen worse.

I get it, a title like this will attract fans, so there was no need to explain backstories. But I was kind of left out half of the time.

So yeah, most of the cool moments were about the turtles becoming power rangers and the rangers becoming ninjas. Casey Jones is also there, for some reason.

I would have appreciated more splash pages, especially with Mecha-Shredder (or was it Shredder Zord? Mega Shredder Zord?).

Overall, I think the story looks very cool. But the story was very average.
