Um, is Discworld magic a physics thing, as in a quasi magnetism/quantum/radioactivity thing, or is it a mental/spiritual/supernatural thing?

Oh wow.

4 The Dryads are about to sacrifice Twoflower to Bel Shamaroth, soul eater, the sender of eight.

So, Bel Shamaroth is adressed as he, implying a personality. He is bad news, but not a demon. Something oposite both good and evil. Something that lacks vitality.

He is also not on Cori Celesti, playing the game, although he is, for lack of a better word, involved. And his number is eight, which is also the number of magic. But magic is not by itself bad news. On the contrary, magic holds the Discworld together. Also his symbol is on the Octavo, the book left after Creation. But Bel Shamaroth is not the Creator. It is not stated if he is sentient or not, but the Octavo is said to have sentience of a sort.

He has worshipers, but wizards do not worship him. In fact, everything about him is taboo to wizards, including the number eight. But the Octavo is kept in Unseen University. Bel Samaroth is atracted in wizards becasue dabling in magic means being on the shores of the unnatural, and the unnatural is his domain. But magic is innate to the Disc, which only exists because of magic.

So, not at all like in the later books. Pratchett changed his mind and fortunately it can be easily explained away by the Wizards being wrong. On prety much everything.

7 The Dryads harnes immense magical power by rotating inside the Discs standing magical field - electricity-stlye. This is Old Magic, which is forbidden to wizards.

So, Old Magic is spiritual and automatic when it binds living beings togeather, but it’s quasi-electromagnetism in the way it is harnessed. Except when you sacrifice a person to a... something, in exchage for ... what? more power?

“New” magic - wizard magic - has the law of conservation of reality, which is actualy about the conservation of effort. But this law was imposed externaly, after the fact. It’s an artificial limitation.

I hadn't noticed this it until now, but in this one book, magic is always presented in a way that best fits the moment, usualy for humor, even if these presentations conflict with each other. This is great while you read it but if you think about things a bit deeper...

So, old magic, original magic, is a raw force like electromagnetism. Except when it's a bond between living beings. Except when it's unnatural and the domain of something worse than evil. Except when it holds the Disc togeather and makes things come true by belief.

This will carry on into the later books.

The wizards will treat magic as a threat to reality not worth the effort of practicing, the withces will treat it as the Force, and "muggles” will treat it as something which embodies their thoughts and makes things come true by faith.

Once I've noticed this fudging with magic, I've realized that even characters change to fit the need of the moment. Not just Vetinari vs proto-Vetinari, or Sam’s character growth, but the way Colon changes from book to book.

In "Guards! Guards!" Colon is risk-averse to the point of not doing his job, but a great archer who mourns a colegue and saves Carrot from himself. In Jingo he is an ignorant and arrogant butt of the joke, used to expose the contradictions of racism/nationalistm. Later, he's still the bad cop, but he’s harmless becasue he's lazy and incompetent, and guards buildings from being stolen. By Fifth Elephant he's overbearing and insecure, nearly tearing apart the Watch in Vime's absence. After that he's a prison guard, and his simplicty and lazyness are used as an advantage, as he has the patience for a dull job and is too dumb to fool. Etc etc.

His innitial redeeming qualities disapear, replaced by brand-new flaws, before the flaws themselves are repurposed into advantages. And my sympathy for him / enjoyment of him, swings wildly with how he is used.

This is, uh. I don't know how I feel about this.

PART I

It was a normal day,i was walking around school when i heard some noise from a class room i entered and i saw my friends Mike Eddy and my brother Leon, i went in and said hi and we talked for a while and since this class room had one of those projectors we thought about watching a movie since class was canceled, mike and eddy thought it would be great since we would have almost 2 hours of spare time, me and leon thought it may have a risk but eventually we said ok to the idea, we were trying to turn on the main computer to watch the film but suddenly the computer started having glitches and after a while it went up in smoke and almost exploded we ran out of the class room when suddenly the teacher was standing there we looked at her and then she went in class, she looked at us with an angry stare and yelled at us WHAT DID YOU DO !?! we told her it was an accident but she wouldn’t listen so me and leon said we are sorry eddy as well but mike said no. he said its not his fault and she doesn’t need to act like a bitch. she looked at him with suprise and grabbed his hand and told us to follow,

PART II

we followed the teacher to the principals office and she told us to sit, We all looked at mike and eddy told him ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID ??? she almost let us go but then u had to act like a tough guy me and leon tried to calm him down but he wouldn’t eddy kept saying you are dumber then a rock im blaming you i don’t deserve to be here this we told him its everyone’s fault and we calmed down, the principal went in and looked at us and told us in a calm way just tell me what happened you don’t need to be scared we wont have to expel you from school we told him what happend and he told us fine you wont be expelled,we all felt relief but then he said although you have two options you can either pay for the projector and computer for 3000$ or you can do community service we obviously picked community service, then the principal told us to go to the police station and hand them the note we did as he told and they told us that a nearby forest was set on fire and we need to go at night with escort we all agreed to the officers terms and went to our homes to prepare.

PART III

at sunset me and leon were at the police station we saw eddy running towards us from the distance and we waved at him we talked a bit then mike showed up as well we all waited at the entrance to the police station just waiting to end this punishment when an officer came to us with a pistol and car keys and asked, are you the kids that need to do the work at the forest ?, we all nodded and he said follow me we walked with him to the police car and entered he told me to sit shotgun while leon and everyone else was on the back side of the car we drove for around 2 hours when we saw someone in a stained white hoodie run across the road the officer almost hit him and yelled watch when you’r walking moron !,the man looked at us with a terrifying stare and stood there for a moment as if he was memorizing our faces i felt like i need to yell at the officer the start driving but as soon as i looked at the window the man was gone, we kept driving but no one said a word we arrived shortly after to the area the cop dropped us at the spot and told us to open the trunk of the car,we did as he said and saw 4 shovels 4 small bags of acorns and other kind of seeds, and 4 bags of 1 kilogram of fertilizer we each took a shovel and a bag of each and stood next to the officer he told us to not go in over 100 meters because this forest is dangerous he placed a big lamp that lighted up almost 60 meters away he then told us to just plant the seeds around while he goes to get some food from a nearby mcdonald’s we passed by he left and mike said lets just get it over with and go home.

PART IV

we started planting for around 2 hours it was already 11:00 PM and we used up all of the seeds and fertilizer the area smelled like crap but we didn’t mind at all but suddenly we saw a white figure wearing all black just watching us at the edge of the light the lamp made we thought it was the officer and we waved at him but the figure didn’t move he just stood there watching us mike said ill go and check who it is eddy agreed to the idea but me and leon told him not to leave but he did anyway he grabbed a shovel and started walking towards the man and stopped walking around 10 meters away from him he froze in place, we yelled MIKE WHO IS HE !?! but he didn’t reply he just looked back at us in terror when he was suddenly grabbed by multiple tentacles and dragged to the darkness, we all watched in terror as the tall man walked away while he walked away leon froze in spot when the man disappeared leon started saying t..th.tthe tentacles !!!!! we told him what about them he yelled THEY CAME OUT OF HIS BACK !!!, shortly after we heard mike scream his lungs out, eddy grabbed his shovel and ran towards the place we heard the yell from and disappear’d in the darkness i stood there and told leon it will be alright when we saw eddy walking back towards us and he had blood all over his jacket and for some reason he had cuts around his face and arms we asked him what happened but he dropped to the ground and didn’t move shortly after a white figure appeared behind his dead body holding a bloody knife he looked at us and i recognized that stare,

PART V

that stare. that horrifying stare was the same as the man we saw on the road he walked towards us while removing his hoodie top i got a glance at his face he had dark eyes and no eyelids and his mouth was cut and shaped into an horrific smile both me and leon looked at him and almost passed out of fear but then i got some guts to ask him a question… i said WHAT DO YOU TWO WANT ?!? he looked as me as if he didn’t understand what i meant by you two he said with a hoarse voice Who is the other one ?… i started feeling cold sweat on my back when suddenly i heard Leon Scream behind me when i saw the tall man grabbing him with the tentacles i grabbed my shovel and started running at him swinging it hitting the man in the head body and everywhere else i thought i might kill him but the hits didn’t affect him. he took leon and face him in front of me in an X position leon starting screaming in pain as the man starting pulling back his tentacles leon cried and yelled HELP ME PLEASE !!! and shortly after it was all over the man looked at me while leon lost his arms and legs, i tried looking at his face but all i saw was a white face with no eyes or mouth i yelled at the man i will get you ! i will fucking gut you for what u did to mike and leon ! i looked back and the man in the hoodie was there being angry i yelled at him as well i will get u as well you son of a bitch ! i took leon’s shovel and charged at the man the man ducked as i swung the shovel towards his head and quickly stabbed me 5 times in my stomach and legs the pain was unbearable he held me as i fell and whispered in my ear in a calm but horrible way, Go to sleep my friend you saw enough he probably thought he killed me because i guess one of his stabs were in a old surgery scar while i was watching from the side struggling for my life i heard him say to the tall man you… you took my kills before and i remember you from before.

PART VI

The man in the hoodie charged in rage towards the tall man and the lashed at each other the tall man tried to grab the man and he manged to grab his left arm and starting mashing it with his tentacles the man yelled DO YOU THINK THAT CRAP WILL WORK ON ME ?!? he quickly swung his knife and chopped down the mans tentacle with no effort he tossed the tentacle to the side and kept lashing the knife towards the other tentacle with surprise i saw he succeeded he removed two more and suddenly the tall man pulled back his last tentacle and charged towards the hooded man he grabbed his knife and threw it away the knife got stuck on a tree the hooded man became enraged and he grabbed the tall man and they started to fight bare handed when suddenly gun shots were heard from nearby the tall man suddenly disappeared while the hooded man climbed the tree grabbed his knife jumped down and looked towards the shooter.

i struggled to turn my head but when i succeeded to turn my head i saw it was the officer he was shocked to the sight of leon amputated and mikes dead body he looked at me and he saw me coughing out blood and apparently the hooded man did as well the officer looked at the hooded man and yelled out.. ARE YOU THE MAN THEY CALL JEFF THE KILLER ?!?, the hooded man said calmly what gave it away ?? i looked in shock when jeff looked at me and said ill help you go to sleep later on my friend from those words i went into shock and passed out.

PART VIII

i woke up in a hospital when i saw needles in my arm and bandages over my stomach and legs i saw a nurse coming in and she looked at me in surprise she called in the doctor and he shortly after came in the room he told my lucky to even wake up with my wounds he told me the officer shot jeff and grabbed me threw me in the back of the car and drove as fast as possible to the hospital the officer came in and told me that nobody survived not mike eddy or leon, i knew about leon and eddy but i asked how he knew about mike he told me that 50 meters away from the main area they found him hanged from his own intestinals,i started to vomit and cry at the same time the officer stood aside as the nurse wiped my vomit off and calmed me down she told me my parents are on the way and the office told me ill be guarded 24/7 until my complete recovery the doctor told them all i need my sleep and walked them out and closed my room door i closed my eyes but i heard glass breaking,the officers tried opening the door but the doctor locked it i suddenly saw him.. looking at me with his smile and he said with his hoarse voice.. I..I told you ill hell you sleep.

[INTRODUCTION]

FULL DISCLOSURE: I never had any particular aspirations to become a movie producer.

While it's true that I've effectively been making movies of my own since the tender age of five, and then did indeed go on to actively enroll in film school as a teenager, I've never actually received any formal training is this specific field -- this integral aspect of the business wasn't covered within the curriculum of my academic institution, believe it or not.  Thus, with no formal qualifications under my belt, I've essentially been faking it until making it, to be perfectly honest... and I think I've done reasonably well at it, all things being considered.  I mean, no-one else was producing my earliest works -- or any of my personal projects, for that matter -- so I've garnered a fair bit of practical experience over the years, I think it's fair to say.

On a personal level, I've taken especial gratification from giving a pragmatic leg-up to those starting out as filmmakers, lending assistance to their individual productions in a capacity that nobody was willing or else able to afford me back when I was starting out.  While I'm a firm believer that art should never be easy -- without struggle, it has no substance -- I'm by no means of the belief that it should be impossible, either.  To date, I've helped get some amazing product made.  And... some >not< so amazing, heh.  But quality notwithstanding, I do take genuine pride in what has been creatively achieved through these labour-intensive efforts.

OK, I need to speak up on this matter because a bunch of the people I follow are being very blunt on the subject of Politics being in a Sonic Comic.

If handled poorly, yes, it’s bad. If it’s not needed, yes, it’s bad. That’s what has happened so far in the comics as have been written. 

That being said, I’m a sucker for politics in my franchises. Nothing really brings out a character like seeing what their ideologies are. I’m not saying they all have to be politicians, but they do have to have a stance, and how cooperative they are with that stance. At its very core, Sonic is a hero for the people. His ideology is to help others and keep them safe from the likes of villains like Eggman. Doesn’t have to do with politics, but the elements for politics are there. The ideology.

Of course, Sonic is never going to be a diplomat, and he doesn’t need to. No one needs to make him a liaison or ambassador for anything, (except that one time where he actually did have to be one and he did more or less a good job. You know? Wolf Pack vs Mysterious Cat Country? That was Politics and it wasn’t all that bad compared to the other examples people gave).

The echidna politics was a clusterfuck because it was handled by none other than Ken Penders, and everything he touches goes to shit.

The Council of Acorn, on the other hand, was actually handled superbly well. Many people don’t like it because many times, it went out of its way to hinder the Freedom Fighters. Many would ask why people on the same side are trying to stop each other. It doesn’t make sense. And this is very true, but there’s also something important to consider. Every member of the council has their own agenda and goals, and one specific member had an agenda AGAINST the Acorn family: Rosemary Prower.

While allied with the Republic, she functioned as a unique antagonist. One who was their ally but seeks to further her own goals. 

This is something I think people might miss because it’s supposed to be represent the people of the Republic. Many of them are friends of the Freedom Fighters, and when it came down to it, most of them were ready to oppose evil, but once again, between Geoffrey’s efforts to undermine the Freedom Fighters and Rosemary’s disdain for the Acorn family, they FORCED the rest of the members to accept an evil wizard as the elected King.

I would like to point out, this subplot has no relation to Sonic, but rather, relates to Sally and Elias, the other half of the Comics and a part of it since the very beginning.

And if you think the politics are gone now that there’s been a reboot, think again.

Nigel and the United Federation have shaky relations at the current point of the comics, and bridges are currently being mended. THIS is politics. As simple as it might seem, it is. I have yet to see anyone complain about it. Why? Because it’s being handled well, and it doesn’t NEED to be stated anymore than it was for that point in time.

An Alien presence that the United Federation KNOWS about has taken refuge in the Acorn Archipelago, and only NOW after they NEED access to the islands within the King’s borders is he told about the THREAT TO HIS PEOPLE. He wasn’t too harsh about it but he made his point very clear that there needs to be clairvoyance between the two governments if peaceful relations are to continue.

As far as I’m concerned, the politics are necessary because of the mere fact that a government, whether it’s the United Federation or the Kingdom of Acorn, exist. Every story that includes a government has to include politics if it’s to be a believable story.

Want Proof?

King Bowser and Princess Peach. They rule over huge kingdoms. There are no politics to be seen anywhere. Do the kingdoms matter? Not really. As far as the games are concerned, Bowser is the real ruler of the Mushroom kingdom, but he’s not? And the confusion goes on.

Sure, it leads to a great premise for a story, but you have two opposing rules, which requires borders, and formal armies as well as many other things, which requires POLITICS to be involved. Otherwise, the kingdoms don’t matter and don’t really have any meaning beyond their title.

You could reduce the game to Bowser being the mob boss and Mario to the streetwise hero to save his companies’ secretary Peach. Same story. No kingdoms. No Politics. Just a guy saving a girl from a creep. 

If you don’t want Politics in Sonic, that’s fine, but the story is going to become less interesting, I can assure you that much, because then Nigel doesn’t matter nor does the UF President nor Abraham Tower, because there’s no bureaucracy that would hold back Shadow and his team from doing whatever the fuck they want.

There’s no intrigue, you know the heroes are going to win, blah blah blah. Meh.

You want another example where the politics matter? Spider-man. In the Marvel Comics, even focusing on one superhero, involves someone working as a vigilante to take down criminals. This is something that people like J. Jonah Jameson deems as a bad person because he’s undermining the cops, and he twists it further to call Spider-man a criminal. Some people believe JJJ and some believe Spider-man is good. While it doesn’t affect Spider-man directly, the laws of the nation and the public views are a product of the politics that govern New York. What he’s taught in school, how the people around him act, whether they’re cooperative or rebellious, they’re all tied to their ideologies.

Sometimes, it’s more direct, like whether or not they can do anything to Dr. Doom at the Latverian Embassy in New York, or whether or not the Avengers should get involved with internal political affairs of a foreign nation even when they know someone like Red Skull is involved.

The Bottom line, Politics serve a good plot point in stories, both as the cause of conflict and as an obstacle to overcome, especially for people like the Freedom Fighters who aren’t normally prepared to face such an opponent.

Can Politics get boring? Fucking yes it can. We see it in the Star Wars Prequels. Holy fuck, does it get boring at times. Once again, it has to be used correctly or it all goes to shit.

But I can’t imagine a Sonic Comic without some form of politics being involved.

“Beckon call” (instead of “beck and call”) and “hunger pains” (instead of “hunger pangs”) are a examples of an Eggcorn! An “eggcorn” is something that is misheard/slightly misinterpreted by the person who says it, but in a way that actually makes a certain amount of logical sense. Other examples include “old timer’s disease” (instead of “Alzheimer’s disease”) and of course, the namesake of the term -- “eggcorn” instead of “acorn”.  And frankly I’ve always thought it was “enact” revenge (though it’s possible both versions are viable? I mean, it’s at least grammatically sensible...). “Extract Revenge” would make for a GREAT pun though, like for a chemistry or baking themed murder mystery title. :D The funniest one of these though, hands down, is “nip it in the butt” See, “nip it in the bud” refers to the act of cutting off a flower bud before it turns into a full blossom, hence why it’s used to refer to “stopping something before it becomes a bigger problem”. What amuses me right now though is I could believe “nip it in the butt” means the opposite: a common definition of “nip” is to bite or attempt to bite in a not particularly deep, but still sharp way (the way a canine might snap their teeth at someone as a threat gesture, or possibly just lightly bite), and the butt (rear end/bottom) of a person or animal is commonly a place where a, say, dog, might attempt to do so, due to, er, accessibility...but needless to say, if you were to nip at someone’s butt, most of them would just move ahead faster.  ;) Oh! And another one not on this list that I see SO often, due to the homophone nature of the two words: no, it is not supposed to be “baited” breath; it’s “bated”! The difference being “baited” indicates you’ve set some sort of lure (”bait”) to attract something or someone in...but to “bate” means to stop (you also see this meaning in the term “abate” in other uses, such as “his fever abated” = “his fever ended”).  And while I’m talking about breaths, how about the difference between “breath” (the thing you suck in or let out of your lungs, hopefully full of oxygen!), and “to breathe” (the verb form of “breathing”)?  In that case, here’s the handy tip for both native and non-native English speakers alike that helped me remember the spelling difference: with exception to some, say, French-derived loanwords? The so-called “silent E” at the end of some English words is not actually there for decoration, it does in fact usually change the pronunciation of the word! It elongates the final vowel! See for example the differences between: “cap” and “cape”, “cop” and “cope”, or “snip” and “snipe”, or, IIRC, “butt” vs “butte”. (Note: I struggled to find a combination for “e” end vowel sound differences shown by a “silent” E modifier that was less obscure than “red vs rede” - the latter is pronounced like “reed” IIRC - but I think that’s just because for whatever reason it’s more common to spell out “long E” sounds as “ea” - like in “each” or “reason” or “season”  or “glean” - or as a doubled E, such as “teen”. Which goes to show this is more a general pattern, and not a solid universal rule because like all English spelling rules there’s going to be exceptions, of course there is, because my language’s grammar and vocabulary, let alone spelling system, is a Frankenstein-style mess of mismatched bits ripped from multiple languages that all used different systems themselves, and then was written down for a few hundred years by people who all had their own differing ideas about how it should be done and often treated it more like the Pirate’s Code than a steadfast system to begin with, including William Shakespeare having spelled his name like five different ways, Because Reasons?) Anyway, my point is: “breath” is usually pronounced kinda like the ‘a’ isn’t in it, like ‘breth”; but “breathe”, with the “silent E” on the end, has the elongated “eeee” sound in it, so it’s said more like “breeth” (also come to think of it, in this case it’s also a softened sound compared to “breath”, but idk if that’s just me or something else at play) While we’re at it, a couple more common confusions: * “glean” vs “gleam”: “Gleam” with an m on the end, means simply to shine or flash (like light bouncing off the surface of something smooth and reflective), “glean”, with an n on the end, however, is originally a verb meaning “o gather grain or other produce left by reapers” (reapers being the initial harvesters) which is why if  you are trying to refer to “gathering information or other material bit by bit”, “glean” is the word you are looking for in standard English. If you’re referring to light bouncing sharply or dramatically off of something, then you use “gleam”. These get pretty commonly confused because they sound really really close and it’s not uncommon for people to not emphasize the final consonant in them much.

* “waist” vs “waste” : “waist” is the thing in the middle of your torso; “waste” is garbage, trash, rubbish, something never used that should have been, something or somewhere desolate and barren, and/or something left over at the end of a process. They’re homophones (pronounced the same), so this is a very common bit of confusion even for native speakers but TRUST ME, if you’re trying to describe the place in the middle of your torso you definitely don’t want to call it your “waste”. ;)

Lessons from Drawer Fic

I'll admit to being exhausted lately. (One shouldn't wake up more exhausted then one went to bed. But, this is my life and that can be status quo normal.) And I've been feeling like Scrat the Squirrel when it comes to both my writing and my current portfolio project.

You know:

Being tired, I went back and read a bunch of old drawer novel (what others might call fan fiction) and when I got to the end of where I'd written (somewhere 2/3 of the way through the third book) I read my notes and was somewhat sad that I couldn't remember exactly where or what I was going to do with it. (And also sad that the premise is so stuck in this certain fandom that I can't simply find and replace names and turn it into something salable.)

These first few novels (before I got to depressing point A and thusly got stuck and then got distracted by the Lone Prospect and the fun that biker werewolves) were the first real stories to me that proved I could write a novel with conflict, plot and a beginning and an end. The whole thing was supposed to be up to at least four or five novels before you got to the main bad guy that started the whole ruckus.) I learned a lot while writing it.

I learned about conflict. For a very long time, I had a very hard time putting conflict into my stories. Conflict is stressful even in the imagination. I felt greatly stressed and didn't desire to put stress into my fun time pretend escape, aka writing. Thus, a lot of my old stories are really long, have no real plot or stakes and thus get really boring! Sadness. Stories need stakes. They need the characters to be stressed about something and to have a portion of themselves on the line. Getting over this hump was huge for me.

I learned about research. The world for this fandom is huge, it's been rebooted multiple times, it has alternate canons, comics, television shows, movies and there is simple a ton of information that even dedicated hard core fans may or may not know. And I wanted to address some of the issues I saw in the main portion of the universe that I played in that had glaring plot holes, but first I needed to look into the rest of the universe to see what or who was already there. Then, I needed to research the actual area and learned a lot about things like police precincts and gun laws and the insanity that is the foster system and rhythmic gymnastics.

Now I do this research stuff without even thinking about it.

I learned about descriptions. Before writing this novel, I wasn't really great at descriptions. I favored leaving them out rather than having to fuss around with something that may or may not be important. (Because people glomp onto the strangest tiny details and that drives me nuts. No. That wasn't significant! It was there so you could see it in your head. Oh for fuck's sake!) But I was putting in a bunch of characters that people didn't know and creating new ones. (Police procedural buddy cops for the win.) I couldn't be lazy. I had to describe things! And it'd be silly only to describe the new things (and really obvious). So, I needed to describe what people already knew as well.

I learned that I could finish something long. You're going. "Ginny, you left off 2/3 of the way through the 3rd section of the story. How is that finishing things?" You missed the point. I finished 2 novel length stories with clear beginnings and endings. I had plots and subplots. I completed something! I could create something of a novel length that was finished and whole with a plot and everything! Maybe, maybe I could actually do this!

When you're at the Scrat carrying a coconut stage and have tons of stories in progress and you feel like drowning. Finishing something, anything is a major relief and accomplishment! Relax. Celebrate. Eat Gelato, Ice Cream, Sorbet! Order a damn pizza! Do a funky dance. You've won this minor war. You finished something! Go you! Or me.

I learned more about my writing. I'd known for a very long time that I was good at dialogue, that I enjoyed writing romantic comedies. I didn't know that in order to actual finish something I needed to throw in an explosion, a gun fight and some old one two action adventure fisticuffs. I didn't know that I wasn't that bad at description, just lazy. The concept of purple prose was terrifying and I never wanted to stray into that rabbit hole! Then, I tried it and realized that purple prose makes my brain itch and if I have a thesaurus to hand it's because I've used that word five times already or it's not quite the right word I want!

Old writing is useful. So, despite feeling like Scrat trying to shove his acorn places it just doesn't belong, I know that I'll get through this. I'll figure out how to get my brain away from world building a new series through yet more drawer fic (hindu based stuff, much fun is being had but Dawn Princess languishes) and figure out how to present my next portfolio project (good vs. evil, my usual style of showing by groups isn't working) and you know store that acorn in a hollow tree where it belongs. I've done it before. I can do it again.

Money at 30: Acorns vs. Robinhood

A few weeks ago, I offered a list of some of my favorite personal finance apps and shared how they could come in handy at different points in your financial journey. Two of the apps I included on the list — Acorns and Robinhood — are aimed at would-be investors who may be intimidated by the world of brokerage firms, commissions, and more. This then begs the question: which is better for beginning investors?

Before we get to an answer for that question, let’s take a look at how Acorns and Robinhood works, what each has to offer, and where both could be improved.

How the Acorns and Robinhood Apps Work

How Acorns works

Acorns is what’s known as a micro-investing app. In fact the platform will allow you to start investing with as little as $5. Additionally, Acorns has a clever way to ensure that you’re consistently funding your account and building your portfolio.

The main feature of Acorns is called Round-Ups, with the idea being that you’re investing your spare change. To achieve this, Acorns will ask you to link your credit and debit cards so that it can monitor your transactions and total up your “change” by rounding up each purchase to the nearest dollar (hence the name). Once you reach more than $5 in Round-Ups, Acorns will pull the money from your linked account and invest it in a selection of stocks and bonds for you.

Beyond Round-Ups, users can also elect to make one-time contributions or set up recurring transfers. Plus the app’s Found Money section features offers from various retailers. By completing these offers, you can earn a little extra money that will be added to your account.

How Robinhood works

Robinhood’s selling point is fairly straightforward: buy and sell stocks without fees. That’s exactly what the app offers, enabling users to purchase real stocks from real companies, all at face value. Sure it may sound like a simple idea, but it’s actually quite revolutionary.

Despite it being a free service, Robinhood doesn’t skimp on features. When it comes to buying and selling stocks, this means having the ability to set limit orders (where you can state how much you’re willing to pay for a stock and have Robinhood execute your order if it becomes available) among other options. Like with Acorns, Robinhood also allows you to set up automatic transfers to your account or make one-time contributions on the fly.

Although stocks were the main game on Robinhood for some time, recently they’ve expanded to bring new investment opportunities to the platform. For example, earlier this year they introduced Robinhood Crypto, allowing users to buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and — most recently — Dogecoin. They’ve also started rolling out support for options trading the past few months as well.

The Pros and Cons of Acorns and Robinhood

Where Acorns succeeds

The biggest benefit Acorns has it that it makes investing simple, automatic, and accessible. From the Round-Ups feature that show’s doubting users that they do have enough money to start investing to the Found Money features that further incentivize you to contribute to your account, the app does a great job of keeping users engaged. Also motivating are the projection charts the app provides, showing users how much money they’ll accrue if they stay on their current course.

Another way Acorns makes investing easy is that it doesn’t ask users to build their own portfolios but instead allows them to choose from five options. These range from conservative to aggressive, with the mix of stocks and bonds shifting each time. Furthermore, with Acorns sharing what each portfolio option is comprised of, those investing rookies who do want to learn more about best practices can find value in these resources.

Where Robinhood succeeds

As I’ve said before, if Acorns is investing 101, Robinhood is likely the 201. With this app, users can select which companies they invest in and become full-fledged shareholders. This includes the ability to vote on shareholder matters and receive dividends (I should note that Acorns also enables users to earn dividends).

Even though it may be a more advanced experience than Acorns, Robinhood still has a lot to teach its users — especially with the recent addition of options trading. The app not only allows you monitor your current positions as well as a watchlist of other stocks but also includes a feed of financial news that can help users stay informed about the markets and beyond. At the same time, Robinhood also succeeds in demystifying investing by erasing the images of brokers yelling over a telephone to a guy on a crowded sales floor and replacing it with an elegant, easy to use interface.

Where Acorns could improve

My single biggest complaint about Acorns is that it isn’t free. Instead, their basic service is $1 a month. That might not sound like a lot but, in the old days when the fee was deducted from your investment funds, you could see how much it cut into your earnings. These days the app pulls its monthly fee from your linked bank account instead, which does make it so you can continue to earn on your money but also makes it so you don’t notice how these dollars are adding up.

One other slightly annoying aspect of Acorns is that Round-Ups don’t actually happen right away, leaving you to wait until you’ve crossed that $5 threshold before your money is transferred. That said, the company has announced their own Acorns Spend debit card that enables instant Round-Ups. Then again, the card carries a $3 monthly fee, which covers the basic Acorns service, their Acorns Later retirement account service, and the card itself.

Finally, one of the aspects of Acorns that’s a “pro” for some may be a “con” for others. In this case I’m referring to their pre-set investment mixes. While these five options do allow some flexibility, it’s not hard to imagine some users would like to have a bit more control over their own investment destiny. Therefore those who don’t want to leave their investment portfolio up to algorithms may want to look elsewhere.

Where Robinhood could improve

Speaking of controlling your destiny, one downside of Robinhood is that you’re really on your own. If you choose to buy a stock that goes from $40 to $5 overnight (or, in the case of crypto, $20,000 to $8,000 in a few weeks), you’re really S.O.L. Meanwhile, it seems less likely that Acorns’ investment mixes would experience nearly as much volatility, easily making it the “safer” choice — if there is such a thing when it comes to investing.

The other thing about Robinhood is that it doesn’t necessarily offer as much motivation or instant gratification as Acorns in the sense that there’s no Round-Ups equivalent. Sure you can set up automatic transfers but, since you can only buy full shares of stock, you may have to wait a while before you have enough to purchase the likes of Disney, Netflix, Alphabet, etc. One could argue that this set-up actually teaches an important virtue and that investing shouldn’t be as much about quick wins as longterm gains, but it’s something that needs to be discussed nonetheless.

Acorns vs. Robinhood — The Verdict

At the risk of it sounding like a cop out, the answer to the “Which is better: Acorns or Robinhood?” question is, “it depends.” Personally, I’ve taken more of a shine to Robinhood in recent weeks because of how it allows me to invest in the stocks of my choosing and does so without costing me a thing. Meanwhile, those who aren’t quite ready to take the plunge and purchase big-time stocks will likely prefer the “set it and forget it” options Acorns provides — although they may start to resent that $1 a month fee like I did.

Ultimately, I will say that I still hold accounts with both apps and use them frequently… I just find myself using Robinhood more. Of course, with Robinhood being free and Acorns costing just a $1 for your first month, there’s little risk in trying out each of these options for yourself and seeing which one you prefer.

In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""

I'm shopping around for insurance quotes because I thought my car insurance was too high. Progressive gave me a very low quote, which I was happy about. It was what I thought I should be paying compared to friends I've talked with. All the other quotes from the other insurance companies were in the same price range and very high. I began to worry that Progressive had some incorrect info, so I called them back, we went over all the info again, and everything is right. They even emailed my quote to me and it's all correct. ok so my problem is, I am currently on a provisional license (in the UK of course) and literally all of my friends that are driving currently are getting insurance for less than 2k a year. Hello, I recieved a ticket in January for Driving without Insurance in Florida. The officer cited me 110$ and let me go, I stayed off the road for a few weeks immediately purchased insurance within 30 days.
