hi!! i know you've posted some favorite liveshows before but as someone who gets easily overwhelmed choosing shows off the Archive i'd love to hear some more of your fave shows to listen to!
Hi!! Here's a handful of recs, but if you want a more specific vibe feel free to send another ask and I can definitely give more :)
2023-07-13 (Four-piece band configuration) is maybe my all-time favorite for sentimental reasons, since that was my first tMG concert ever. Primarily Bleed Out and The Sunset Tree, with a banger solo set of Jam Eater Blues/Commandante/From TG&Y/The Monkey Song. Crowd energy is really high and there's some delightful banter and interactions!
2017-11-11 (Four-piece band configuration) is a slightly older but still fairly recent one. Since they were touring Goths at the time, it's a pretty Goths-heavy setlist, with my all-time favorite rendition of Shelved, also featuring a really cool solo Night Light and a gorgeous full band rendition of Snow Crush Killing Song!
2021-08-06 (Five-piece band, with fifth goat Erin McKeown) is notable for being the first show back after a year and a half of lockdown, and the energy is palpable. Live debut of a lot of Getting Into Knives, featuring an unreleased song and one from the first tape, and overall really fantastic and high-energy from both the band and the audience. This show is the one I reach for when I've had a bad day.
2009-06-13 (John solo) was the first of two shows back-to-back at Zoop, and while I shy away from describing any shows as "definitive", the Zoop shows are big in the same way Bottom Of The Hill shows are big. This one features a really great range of older and more obscure songs, and if you like this one, there's another show directly following it!
2014-06-15 (John + Peter duo), speaking of Bottom Of The Hill, this is a favorite BotH show! They play the entirety of Taboo VI: The Homecoming, and to this day I've still never listened to the actual Taboo VI tape, just this performance. It's the third of three consecutive shows at BotH, and all three are worth a listen for sure, but this one is my go-to recommendation.
2024-03-01 (John solo) is probably one you've seen me recommend before. This solo show from earlier this year was at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and the atmosphere of it is haunting and gorgeous. The acoustics of the cathedral make a lot of these songs just immensely powerful - there's something about this Hast Thou Considered The Tetrapod that makes me cry pretty much every time I listen to it.
Additionally, no talk of live tape recs is complete without shouting out Emerald's live comps! You might know Emerald as The Sticker Lady, or if you've spent a few hours in queue with her, just an absolute delight of a human being and one of my favorite people in this community - she's seen tMG probably a hundred times, and each of her themed compilations are lovingly made with great skill and artistry.
(ETA: also worth including here, What's the Live Music Archive?)
Hopefully this is a decent enough rec list! I tried to keep a decent assortment of shows without being too overwhelming with options, but again, please feel free to drop another ask if you want more specific recs or anything. Happy listening!!
#txt#ask#transmissions from lyric#tmg#the mountain goats#tapes#gonna go ahead and toss this under my tag#resources#because its a good starting point for anyone curious about getting into the tapes!#also @ my friends who are also lma enthusiasts please feel free to add stuff!#i know my picks generally skew somewhat modern and are only a small range of what the lma collection has to offer :)

Just got my JfT vinyl in the mail
It's so fucking good.
Like, I think I have a new favorite TMG album. It's just so fucking good. Jenny III Is my personal favorite.
Anyway, the reason I'm making this post is the little sticker that came attached to the plastic wrapping. It reads: "NINE SONGS LEADING UP TO THE DAY JENNY BOUGHT THE KAWASAKI, TWO FROM THE IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH, AND ONE FROM A DISTANT HIGHWAY DOWN THE ROAD"
So when the album officially releases tomorrow and everyone is piecing together how this album fits in to other songs, I feel like this could be useful for assembling the timeline since the songs aren't chronological order.
Also, I doubt anyone cares about spoilers, but just in case, some additional things I wanted to mention under the cut
-Distant Stations is mentioned. And it seems like the song itself may be from the perspective of the second narrator speaking to Jenny.
-The second narrator, Jenny's lover, is almost certainly The Woman from Taipei. Everyone was pretty sure Jenny was a lesbian anyway, but the way that The Woman from Taipei is
Introduced first in Color in Your Cheeks
The one houseguest spoken directly to (rather than about) in Clean Slate Makes her seem especially important.
-Somewhere along the line the bike was ditched. It is unclear if this was by Jenny or by William Staniforth Donahue. The way the second narrator talks about it rotting in a junkyard makes me think that Jenny ditched it William found it in the junkyard.

Hi! I bought a jerma sticker from you at TMG, but it's not on your online store. Are you going to put it in your online store in the future? I have a friend who'd love a copy. Thanks!
Hi there! So glad you found my booth at TooManyGames and like my silly little art! 💖
I'm currently in the middle of a busy con season (I am packing for Anime Expo as we speak lol), so it'll be a hot minute before I'm able to update my store. I'll try and put out a big store update, but it likely won't be until around September once my events slow down and I have the time. I'll be sure to post about such an update on my socials, so keep your eyes peeled! In the meantime, you can also view my event schedule to see if I'll be at a con near you!

[ID: A reddit thread on r/The Mountain Goats by user ChickenlessTenders (source here). The topic says, "Happy 4/20 to those celebrating". The post is a fancy Bugs Bunny meme. Bugs stands on a black background, wearing a tuxedo and looking at the camera calmly. The text beside him reads, "I wish all 'observant Mountain Goats fans' a very 'Get High And Listen To The Cure'". On his other side is a stoner emoji giving a thumbs up and a 'Welcome To Passaic' TMG sticker. The thread is at sixty-nine likes. /End ID].

Oh, he also took a moment to mourn an unsuccessful strike before leading into Solidarity Forever by saying "And up North, you know, if you say you have a problem and you live south of the Mason Dixon, they just say 'move.'" No elaboration was needed other than an eye-roll, we were already cheering.
I didn't realize at the moment that I would need to wait almost until the show was over, when No Children and This Year came up, before I would hear the crowd sing along as feverishly as we did then. A lot of people were shouting more than singing, I know I was.
I've corralled the rest of my disaster queer disorganized thoughts below the cut.
At the start of the evening I was delivering food through an app to scrounge up ticket money, all the way until 30 minutes after the opener had taken the stage. As I approached to buy my ticket, someone who looked like me but with a cool piercing and better fashion sense came darting up and asked if it was okay for me to buy an extra ticket she had and cashapp her half-price.
She anxiously assured me it was a real ticket, which suddenly introduced the idea to me that it might not be, so I pulled up cashapp and got my wristband before paying. I assured her in return that security was welcome to tackle me if i turned deadbeat. Sending the money, I saw her last name was Hays and laughed, "like the code. That's funny considering where we are."
She hadn't heard of it. I summarized it by saying it was the sort of pre-movie-ratings set of rules that dictated you could only have a gay character if they were a villain and died horribly. Between my saying this and my converting the other half of my ticket money into an irresponsible volume of pbr, the opener had managed to perform a song about how a lot of people really ought to go to heaven even though they rules say they can't, a song about how no one should really want to go to heaven because it's fucking boring and there are no honkytonks, and finally a sort of impassioned half-song, half-manifesto about being southern and pansexual that veers into un-lyrical shouting about dismantling White Supremacy brick-by-fucking-brick that has the small crowd going wild.
"It's my pleasure to cede the stage to the awesome power of the Mountain Goats," he declares before exiting stage right, and I wander out to his merch table to congratulate him on being a very impressive specimen of the exact sort of cast-iron cornbread cooking queer who might respond to a suggestion of moving with, "Oh hell no, it's my fucking home. If they don't like it, THEY can move -- and if they won't move, WE can march."
But first I meet his child who is studiously performing illegal labor in the form of churning out stickers to "sell." (When I told her I didn't have cash upon being offered a "robot" sticker, she said she could sell it to me for free. I was forced to awkwardly admit that I do not take care of my things well enough to accept such a nice gift.)
The opener emerged and I congratulated him on making such a neat kid, and also on being really very cool. He was abashed in that way very cool millenial southern queers are when we receive compliments that remind us how totally pointless much of our previous suffering was.
I step out to vape and catch up with my ticket seller. We bond over having been victimized in our teens and I take a moment to bitch about how it makes you stick out after, never quite on the same page as other people, and in some subliminal way they can smell it on you just like the tourists can spot me for a member of the help from a mile away.
She cracked a joke I enjoyed, at that, "Oh for sure. You don't even have a nose ring, but i could tell."
She hadn't seen or heard much TMG before this show, so as we went back in I made sure to let her know that despite the gracious opener's words leaving the stage, the "awesome power" of the Mountain Goats was going to be delivered in the form of a strange, silly middle-aged man who will sing words to you that make you feel like you just caught a handhold on the way down to oblivion ... but the majority of the time, it's going to be four middle-aged men on stage with the one in charge being the guy who has the *exact* energy of a second-grade only child who has been waiting all year to do his report about an amphibian because they are the coolest thing he has found out about so far, and his mom just finished going through it and changing every "hellbender" to "h-bender" so he's sort of hopping in place and rambling about the ugliest muddy little lizard-thing in a way that makes it seem somehow a little endearing, maybe even *necessary*, except in this case the ugly little lizard-thing might be a retired semi-pro wrestler, or an alcoholic should-be divorcee, or maybe even me at the party wearing my lizard suit because otherwise it's so hard to get noticed in this town.
I don't think I said it all that way thought. If I remember right, I said something more along the lines of... He's going to come on stage and being a fucking loser for two hours, just a super cringey, awkward, old guy dork, and that's why we love him. If you can get on stage that giddy to be an unrepentant cringe-lord then you should, because it's basically the point of living.
He came out and did just that for a couple hours, making silly faces to his own jokes in the lyrics, somehow managing to place his guitar clip the wrong way four times in a row, putting Minnesota and Tallahassee back-to-back with me standing 10 feet away in what can only have been an intentional bid to make me personally sob like a child, but thankfully at some point I realized he was practically screaming the chorus of spent gladiator at this little congregation of mainly wounded ex-christians under thirty.
How often the old love has asked me for more again, and how often I have come down here for it... I think I might be ready to spit some blood at the camera after all. Sometime in the encore, Palmcorder Yanja moves in for the emotional coup-de-grace. Thankfully our remarkabe opener inoculated me with lyrics about his friends all being hooked on either alcohol or amphetamines, and I've got quite a lot of pabst in me by now, so I can't help but think of Steal Smoked Fish and leave in a good mood.
Some weird guy, who was apparently accidentally forgetting to bring song tapes to the mastering of his own albums the year I was born, looked out at us all night with pure glee and thanked us for being such a special crowd. If there's an angel up there who doesn't love me after all, I think I'm alright. Nights like this make me feel loved like a hellbender returning to the once-polluted delta; or if you know the old story, like a half-parched starfish launched into the ocean, being rescued ass-over-teakettle by the kind of wanton compassion that brooks no argument and sasses you, laughing, if you try to argue anyway.
Every artist I have seen perform at soul kitchen has complained we aren't loud enough, our energy is too low, tried to pump us up between songs. John Darnielle looked at that crowd and said, "You hear rumors of crowds, in Japan or somewhere, who stay quiet during tuning. Thank you so much, now I can play some of the quieter songs. People think it's the loud ones you feel most, but it's the quiet ones."
Cohen said there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in, but at the moment that light is coming from John Darnielle using a shitty dollar store keychains to admire the splendor of the humble yet elusive roly-poly or simple green rain frog taking a bath in the cup of an upturned day-lily

describe yourself in aesthetic things: a laptop covered in national park stickers, thrifted Hawaiian shirts, bonfires on the beach, novelty haunted houses, sand sticking to your sandals, jars full of salt water taffy, a circus tent, the opening scene of the parent trap, the stars peaking through the trees above, riding the monorail to prom, leather boots, a dirty martini.
I’m going to tag @raksheshi @tallsinspace @goatmilkoatmilk and @backwardsheadphones if y’all want to!
