I know I just made a post the other day about how it's cruel and unusual for artists to write a fantastic song and make it less than 2 minutes long but fr that is so fucked up of them. Anytime the Dance Music madness descends on me (out of my control) I have to listen to it 20 times in a row because as soon as it starts, it's over. This your fault, Mr. Darnielle. You gave me no other choice. You should have put more song in your song.

" okay so look, i'm 17 years old
and you're the last best thing i've got going
but then the special secret sickness
starts to eat through you
what am i supposed to do?
no way of knowing
so i follow you down your twisting alleyways
find a few cul-de-sacs of my own
there's only one place this road ever ends up
and i don't wanna die alone
let me down
let me down
let me down gently
when the police come to get me
i'm listening to dance music "

*Eta: CRY FOR JUDAS
renowned goats aficionado and good opinion enthusiast sarah eternalgirlscout i come seeking your wisdom. what are some boppy or danceable tmg tunes
I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED. your mileage may vary on danceability, but i do think all of these are certified bops. there are many more goats songs that could be classified as such, but i tried to make this quick + short so i limited this list to ones i had something to say about off the top of my head.
spotify link, if you're so inclined
Dance Music
this one was my first thought and it's not exactly a happy song to start with, but the upbeat tempo in contrast to the subject matter is intentional and one of my favorite things about the song
Southwood Plantation Road
allow me to share one of my favorite tmg banters from 2003:
"This, my friends, is a dance number. Somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty audiences so far this year have declined my kind offer that they get they freak on to this song. But you may freak away. I won’t tell nobody. [Audience member: Southwood Plantation Road!] That’s the fucking song, my friend!"
Alpha Rats Nest
another anti-love song in the vein of "No Children." a lot of songs off of Tallahassee could be categorized as bops, but this is the other one i think of when i think of tunes that make me want to get up and move
Corsican Mastiff Stride
when the album Getting Into Knives came out and i heard this song for the first time, i literally dropped what i was holding when the drums started
Parisian Enclave
the sheer rhythm of this one is irresistible. it really gives the sense of collective, swift movement, like the rats this song is about
Pigs That Ran Straightaway Into The Water, Triumph Of
another song about movement, about freedom
Choked Out
when I was in undergrad, there was more than one incident of me headbanging so hard to this song while driving that i didn't realize i was going like 15 over the speed limit
Foreign Object
an old friend and i used to joke about getting tax benefits married if we were both single in our mid-30s, and a vital part of the scenario we imagined was that this song would be our first dance at our wedding
January 31, 438
a song about dancing! like "Dance Music," the subject matter is enhanced by the irony of being paired with this tune
Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome
another song i should not be allowed to listen to while driving
First Blood
like a lot of high-tempo mountain goats songs, the boppiness and danceability is at odds with the topic in order to make a point. it's a fast-paced, entertaining jam tearing down the mythology of the action movie, an often fast-paced genre that puts entertainment above the implications of its philosophy. and you can shake your ASS to this song
This Year
what else is there to say about this song? the first time i saw the mountain goats live, in a tiny theater on a college campus in northern wisconsin, almost the entire crowd stood up from their seats and danced in the aisles. i spun under my now-husband's arm and i swear i got a smile from john darnielle. there WILL be feasting, and dancing. this year, next year, every year
any other Goats Enjoyers are welcome to add to this post! i admit this skews fairly recent. let's get some crunch on it

ok ok fine, ill start listening to the mountain goats. what songs/albums should i start with?
THE SUNSET TREE
Okay, here's what I would actually recommend. For albums:
If you wanna feel kinda sad and nostalgic but in a righteous way: The Sunset Tree
If you want a lot of songs about coming home to love and what it means to be alive: Heretic Pride
If you want a collection of songs that will change your worldview and are also about what it means to be alive but in more of a like, you exist not as an individual but as a part of something much bigger: Transcendental Youth
If you really like professional wrestling: Beat the Champ
If you've ever felt like you want to bite and punch and fight and get revenge: Bleed Out
I would also recommend Jenny from Thebes but JfT is better if you've listened to All Hail West Texas which I don't recommend as a starter album because the audio is really crunchy and doesn't have the same aural punch that some of the other albums do but JfT is also so so good and I love Fresh Tattoo so much (because it's about Nathan Wuornos)
For individual songs if you want more of a sampler (it is SO HARD to choose just 10):
Amy AKA Spent Gladiator I is maybe my favorite TMG song because I live my life by "do every stupid thing that makes you feel alive" even though I know it's about drugs but I choose to interpret it differently. That said,
This Year is THE classic top tier fan favorite
Sax Rohmer #1
Clean Slate
You or Your Memory
Up the Wolves
Dance Music
The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton
Get Famous
Training Montage
But also like, TMG really does have a song for everything and everyone and every mood and every vibe so you'll just have to listen to them all to sus out which is your favorite. Also there is a song for every single blorbo/ship you could possibly imagine like how San Bernardino is about Polivia and how the entirety of Bleed Out is about Duke Crocker and Love Love Love is about McWexler and

🎶✨when u get this, list 5 songs u like to listen to, publish. then, send this ask to 10 of your favourite followers (positivity is cool)🎶✨
oof this has been sitting in my inbox for AGES ella sorry!! i have so many opinions about music and i didn't have the energy to pick 5 when you first sent it lmao, i'm so sorry i forgot about it!!!
i've been on an I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats kick lately (in the literal sense, not in the podcast of the same name sense), but i will refrain from listing 5 mountain goats songs lmao, i do actually listen to a variety of stuff i promise 😅 though it will be difficult to narrow it down to only 1 TMG song if i'm being honest. edit post list creation: same w/ all the listed artists tbh. i think i got too involved/detailed on this lmao sorry.
when in comes to music, i get really connected to songs based on memories that get attached to them and am particularly invested in lyrics (vs my partner who is a musician and much more interested in bands doing things musically/technically unique/interesting) so my favs tend to be based on loving the lyrics first and the sound/what is interesting musically second.
but in no particular order:
Autoclave - The Mountain Goats (god this was a tough choice. Idk if heretic pride is my fav album of theirs but it IS very good. my fav album of theirs is, i think, impossible to choose. my friend dan made me a mixtape of TMG songs when I was 18 or 19 because he thought i'd dig them, and he was right. i've been in love with them ever since.) When I try to open up to you, I get completely lost / Houses swallowed by the earth, windows thick with frost / And I reach deep down within, but the pathways twist and turn / And there's no light anywhere, and nothing left to burn
Jealous - Camp Cope (this is from Running With The Hurricane, which is their latest album and it's gorgeous. it came out during the early days of COVID and i was living alone in LA in this miserable bachelor unit and would go on walks in the middle of the night in K-Town, where i was living at the time. i very vividly remember the first time i listened to it on one of those walks. this was also my Izzy song back in my intense ofmd days lmao. Camp Cope, my best friend Camp Cope) I'm so jealous / I'll take anything you give to me / Yeah, I'm so jealous / Oh, I'm laying at your feet / Take me, baby / You're never in the wrong / I'm so jealous / Yeah, I'm so jealous of your dog
Cactus Tree - Joni Mitchell (would have been very easy to pick literally anything from Blue but this is, i think, my fav of hers to listen to/sing along to. It's so full of longing, and Songs to a Seagull was her first album. it's so gorgeous. i've loved Joni since i was a little kid because she was my mom's favorite and i have so many good memories of listening to Court and Spark and her live album Miles of Aisles over and over and over again on the floor of the living room or in the car or on my portable cd player in the hallways at school. i used to both sing along to the songs and talk along, reciting her commentary between songs on Miles of Aisles 😅) She will love them when she sees them / They will lose her if they follow / And she only means to please them / And her heart is full and hollow / Like a cactus tree / While she's so busy being free
Easy to Love - Cayetana (i've been attached to Cayetana for years ever since I saw them open for Lemuria many years ago. even finding them through an experience w my abusive ex is not enough to dull my love for cayetana. this song makes me feel so many things and i love this whole album) And sometimes I can't articulate the words trapped in my head / The way the morning does its dizzy dance / And I can't get out of bed / I learn too late / I learn too late
Delicate, Petite & Other Things I'll never be - Against Me! (very difficult pick, Transgender Dysphoria Blues is my fav album of theirs, but I also love a lot of their earlier stuff. This song from Shape Shift With Me - and the whole album tbh - is excellent) I'm still waiting for the visions / Possession has yet to take hold of me / We all want to burn on a pyre / So tell me what kind of witch are you / The skin on your neck looks like a little thin / Don't go sticking it out for me / Like a beggar with a cold cup to fill / I am the dirt under your nails
some honorable mentions:
Easier - Nate Roy (Nate is a former coworker/friend of mine - we've drifted apart but he came out as trans when we were working together and the whole album is about his transition. i've listened to it countless times and it was part of what led to me realizing i was also trans.)
Red Wine Super Nova - Chappell Roan (idk that i need to link this one everyone knows Chappell lmao but still. I'm late to the game on Chappell Roan. i never actually listened to the album in full until this past August right after my cat died because i desperately needed something fun to listen to while i was driving bc most of my music is either sad or angry and would just encourage me to cry which is Not Safe while driving lmao. i fell in love instantly and i love this song so much)
Love Me, I'm a Liberal - Phil Ochs (i just love Phil Ochs and this song is just. funny and depressing and funny. so much of it is sadly still relevant and every time i listen to it, i think about writing an updated version of it with modern references. have genuinely asked my partner to teach me to play the guitar so i can do this. idk if anyone would even want to listen to it though lmao)
will send this ask to a few people but if anyone sees this and wants to do it, please feel free and tag me, i'd love to see your favs!

tmg asks
2: top TWENTY FAVORITE SONGS
holy shit twenty is a big number in no particular order heel turn 2, heretic pride, autoclave, get lonely, dilaudid, broom people, this year (jordan lake sessions vol 3 specifically), cotton, sicilian crest, going invisible two, slow west vultures, game shows touch our lives, riches and wonders, no children, love love love, elijah, wear black, deuteronomy 2:10, never quite free, dance music, rat queen. i think thats twenty.
8: favorite song with a location in the title
ok the obvious answer is a going to. the obvious answer is one of my favorite going tos like palestine, maryland, or georgia. the real fuckin answer is moon over goldsboro. get lonely MY BELOVED
20: personal story
oh man oh man. what the hell is there to even say. i think my earliest memory of tmg is from when i was in middle school, like i very specifically remember this one specific lyric video that probably was circulating in one of my fandom discords that i listened to and i just loved it (it actually might have been one of you were cool but i dont remember). like i was entranced. but i remained a very casual fan for a long while until at some point in like high school. and i think i read some fanfic of probably cr with a heel turn 2 reference and i listened to it and just again was entranced and it happened again and again until i got to where i am today. i have a massive fucking reverence for jd and i could list in an innumerable amount of ways in which his music has pushed me through and brought me joy but honestly i just admire how strongly he lets himself be expressive and keep up this incredibly prolific music career despite the fact that most people look at this massive catalogue and confusing lyrics and go what the hell. i also know the feeling which i think he has of just stories and words falling out of you and i just!!! the goats. the greatest of all times.

6 12 17 & 24! 🎶
6: a song that makes you want to dance tmg's "dance music" - is that cheating?
12: a song from your preteen years relient k's "who i am hates who i've been." i was raised evangelical by a dad who loves frank zappa, so up until around 10 i only heard worship music sets and classical music. (i got the intro to zappa and the beatles and david bowie as a teen, when my dad figured i was old enough to hear songs about sex.) my dad HATES modern christian pop lmao. it's one of his best traits. of course this means i found the local christian radio station enticing when my only other option was the local state university's classical music station (and they played a LOT of cpe bach, the lesser bach imho). pre-teen me would've fucking loved fall out boy. all they had, though, was relient k. pre-teen me had a lot of confusing feelings about matt theissen, the front singer, which in hindsight mostly boil down to "oh i want to be you," in a gender/embodiment way. i spent a lot of time in the garage and my bedroom singing angst over someone who could either have been a girl or jesus.
17: a song that you would sing a duet with on karaoke me asking myself if i know the words to any songs i might find on a karaoke set list. uhhh. the decemberists' "sucker's prayer"? i'm a shit singer but i think i can do a decent colin meloy impression.
24: a song by a band you wish were still together IS there a band i wish was still together? i guess nine inch nails because i like trent reznor doing soundtracks but also i wanna see him climb a microphone stand in his lil butch outfits. let's say "i would for you" from hesitation marks.

okay, so my favorite mountain goats songs are generally of the Lovecraft in Brooklyn/Choked Out/Training Montage/Dance Music variety.
I am less a fan of his slow songs for whatever reason, but sometimes they contain lyrics that I need in my life, like Wild Sage "some days I think I'd feel better if I tried harder/most days I know it's not true"
which is, like, extremely very resonant for me but I just don't care for his slow songs as much. sorry, authentic Wild Sage enjoyers.
and it's not that I don't like slow songs, especially by women singers in particular, because I do, it's just that for whatever reason tmg slow songs do not do it for me even when they're lyrically transcendent.
anyway, this is all to say the above Youtube video is a cover of Wild Sage by The Scary Jokes and it is very good and I can already feel it becoming important to me.
it's a woman singer over I think a ukulele and my ears like it a lot.
the full verse in question is "some days I don't miss my family/and some days I do/some days I think I'd feel better if I tried harder/most days I know it's not true"
so if you need that in your life or just like this kind of song, here is its Youtube.

tmg song asks! :)
Spent Gladiator 2, Dance Music, and Done Bleeding
Spent Gladiator 2 – I haven't sat down with this song until now, so I'm happy your ask is helping me expand my discography knowledge. I really like the determined, gritty optimism of this song. The juxtaposition of both these images in this verse feels compelling to me
Like the mice in the forgotten grain Way up on the top shelf Like someone who's found a small town to escape to Keeps one eye on his abandoned, former self
Dance Music – using music as a comfort/escape -- big mood, JD, big mood
Lean in close to my little record player on the floor So this is what the volume knob's for
Done Bleeding – I haven't listened to this one extensively either. (In general i gravitate less towards In League with Dragons compared to JD's other albums. And i tend to just make big playlists of songs i like, so it means my overall album knowledge can be spotty. Been trying to spend time with individual albums per friend recommendations.) After listening it definitely fits in the genre of "songs about sitting alone in a room waiting for something to happen" -- and then eventually finding the exit. This verse struck me in particular
Take a picture or two Just to remember the view Leave a mark on the door As an empty warning sign from one who's gone before But isn't here anymore
Something something every place i've ever lived is full of ghosts / moving beyond selves or places you outgrow / imperfection of memory.
send me a Mountain Goats song title and I'll tell you my favorite line(s)

Swynrpwrimo Task #27 - Fairy Talent
[tracker]
I'm not good at anything actually cool like art or singing lmao and I didn't feel like making a gif pack so uhhh what about "accidentally making characters neurodivergent when you didn't plan to, but they clearly are" and "thinking too hard about their music taste" or "knowing what little bits they do in their daily life"
Here's a collection of music-based bits, vocal stims, etc that Mu-yeol will do with an explanation for each below! Not at all exhaustive lmao. Some of these are used as vocal stims others are just song-based "bits" he does.
Like Being Shot By A Bullet - Baek Ji Young
This is is a bit!
Technically this is, like a very popular sad Korean breakup type song, but Mu-yeol will reference it all the time. Like, if Nemo grabs the last dumpling or piece of kimbap as he's also reaching for it, he'll look at him and sing the line that translates to "like being shot by a bullet", as in like, "wow, beTRAYal"
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
This is a bit! He'll use the "well! how did I get here?" sometimes when he walks into a room and forgot why lol
Taeyang Singing To The Crowd
This one is a stim, this moment has been memed on K-pop and Korean internet for years. Mu-yeol isn't super online, like he uses Spotify and reads John Darnielle's tweets, and there's some educational YouTube channels he's discovered and checks periodically for new nerd content, that's p much it, but this video has appeared in the Bae family WhatsApp chats so he knows it and it got stuck in his brain.
Feel Like Cinderella Naega Byeonhae!
Stim, lol. THIS one got stuck in his head because of it being played at K-pop dance night while he was working at Pixie's. And idk Nemo probably likes TXT and everyone who likes TXT got that line stuck on repeat when this song, Cat & Dog came out. Mu-yeol has listened to this song willingly maybe a total of twice but that line is in the stim rotation, comes out while cleaning the house a lot.
Foreign Object - The Mountain Goats
This one is a bit; if something, usually an inanimate object or Karen the squirrel annoys him, he'll deadpan "I'm gonna stab you in the eye with a foreign object."
No Spill Blood - Oingo Boingo
This one is a very ongoing bit and has been a stim off and on for like...over 20 years now. If it's a stim he'll repeat the chorus by himself. If it's in bit format, it's like a call and response between him and whoever else, usually if it's been quiet for too damn long. When Nemo was a kid, to tell him it was time to settle down and pay attention to him, he had to mix up the methods to get his attention. In the rotation was using the chorus of No Spill Blood. "Nam-min, What! Is the law?" "No spill blood!" "And who makes the rules?" "Someone else!" at this point little Nemo would usually come running to see what Appa was going to tell him to do. There was a variety of songs he'd make call and responses out of -- mostly much more Normal ones, a lot of Shinee or 1st gen K-pop songs, but that's probably the weirdest one. Anything that Nemo would've grown up listening to just because his father did could've been used.
Sinaloan Milk Snake Song - The Mountain Goats
This one's a stim lmao. Sometimes WILL do it on purpose though when he's trying to tell someone something - usually Nemo because Nemo gets all of his TMG references even though 95% of them are against his will, just by absorbing it growing up.
Beautiful Liar - Monsta X
This one's a stim, when he's under stimulated in his environment.
Monsta X is like, THE K-pop group he really likes independent of "oh, my son loves them so I got into them" or "I mean it's BTS! Nobody loves BTS more than middle-aged Koreans living abroad." There's a couple groups or artists he follows casually because everyone likes pop music to SOME extent and they make pop songs he likes, but Monsta X is the one he like...genuinely keeps up with. Like he will live-text his brother in the music industry in South Korea his reactions to the albums and music videos, he can tell you who is singing what line without looking it up, that's his silly little group he likes. Joohoney's verse on Beautiful Liar lives in his head rent free, and it's probably one of the songs he'd show someone to try and get them into the group too.
Cà Phê - Min
Stim! One of the man reasons he began learning Vietnamese tbh. Came across this song and "Ngồi uống cà phê đến tối / Không giờ rồi mà anh chưa tới / Cà phê cứ tí tách rơi / Anh quên mất em rồi" simply took over his life. This is also a great song to zone out and like physically stim to, just put in on and do your little dancey dance to while you're doing chore. Idk how to explain it but something about it just scratches the neurodivergent brain.
No Children - The Mountain Goats
Stim!
He'll just be reading in his room and quietly go "...and I hope you die! ... I hope we both die!" for no reason
