losing my mind what do you mean martin is canonically Down Bad for jon? and jon is canonically ace? these were casually confirmed in the span of like 30 seconds? i thought those were just the typical in-denial fanbase headcanons, they're REAL?!?

Yesss Jonathan
Hide information from your colleges and be suspicious all of them
Trust nobody
.....Suspect Elias being a murderer (low key same he's like mega sus though the fact that Jonathan suspects him that early makes me believe he didn't actuallydo it....but lets be honest was probably involved somehow)

Random question but, What was your first impressions of tma when you first started listening? quite curious abt this one lmao
the first time I started listening to it, jon's voice kept lulling me to sleep so I didn't get anywhere farther than ep 11 haha
the second time I started listening, I still really like jon's voice. though if you want like an actual first impressions, i have a liveblogging thread per season somewhere tagged under tma liveposting
here are some fun ones though

how did you get into the magnus archives? like how did you discover it since you were a fan before you got cast?
have your opinions on the podcast (like fav character, headcanons, etc) changed since getting cast?
anyways thanks if you do answer!!! you do such an amazing job as gwen in tmp and it’s truly a delight every time we get to hear from the fandoms favourite character!!!
Hiya!
So, during lockdown I started a TTRPG campaign with friends from uni, college, drama school ... you name it. Just a random bunch of people who liked the idea.
Around October/November 2020, one of them recommended Magnus. They're a massive horror nerd, and I was not into horror at that point (or so I thought, like a FOOL.), but I liked the sound of it and decided to give it a go. I listened to the first two episodes and only broke off because I was about to go and play D&D, and from that moment I was in love - with Magnus, with horror, with voice acting, the whole lot. I said "God, I don't care if I have to work awful jobs for 6.5 days a week - just let me spend the remaining half day working on a show like that" (touch wood, I haven't needed to keep that promise yet ...).
Anyway, time went on, friend and I were on the phone to each other sobbing over the finale (I had liveblogged every episode with them), and that was that. A week later I finished my MA, started working day jobs, and had already e-mailed RQ after being encouraged by my old improv teacher whose name I had heard in the credits a few times (thank you, Ian ❤️).
Three years on and here we are! Madness.
Anyway, I'm not sure how much my opinions have changed as I haven't re-listened since I was cast (except to the odd old favourite). I think it would feel strange to do so now - so much has happened and changed in my life both personally and professionally, and I also listened to TMA at such a distinct moment in time. I always loved the Archivist, Jonah, and the whole concept of the Eye, as well as the Leitner storyline in S2 (possibly my favourite series).
Right, that's turned into another essay. Thank you so much for such kind words - I fully expected everyone to loathe Gwen, so this has all been something of a surprise. Still, I suppose there's still time yet ... 😊

okay i know pretty much nobody will pay attention but im going to live blog my reaction to season 5 of The Magnus Archives because i have had too many feelings during the previous four and i really want to slow down and process and savor this final one.
it’s going to take a while to do the whole thing because i’ll be taking breaks between episodes since im not in a great mental state and i am pretty sure they’re not going to be easy to go through.
i’ll make a new post for each episode i listen to and tag them as #tma 5 liveblog
i already listened to the first two so i’ll post those soon.

Liveblogging TMAGP2: Making Adjustments
I think this is the first "entry" into the TMA franchise written by Alexander J. Newell? And it's a hell of a good one. I know I only have 3 incidents to pick from so far, but this is my favorite. As a reminder, I have already seen this episode. Everything after will be new to me though.
2:09 - "-and that’d be another “resurrection,” possible subsections… “obsession,” “medical”, “pursuit” and… hmmm. “Blasphemy”, maybe, so that would make it… four two three seven." Again with these subsections! Some of them are thematic, but some of them are just elements that were present. The main focus of Frankenstein in my eyes is his focus on avoiding responsibility. He goes against the laws of nature, and just abandons his creation because it has scary eyes. He lets Justine literally get executed because he refuses to reveal the fact his creation killed his brother. And then Victor makes then entire thing about him! About how bad he feels, about how he'll have to live with the guilt and regret of knowing. He's so up his own ass, Frankenstein's Monster basically tells him "I'm going to kill your loved ones" and Victor assumes the monster is just going to attack him on his wedding night. Idiot. What a goddamned idiot. And do any of these subsections get all that? Nope. Maybe "Blasphemy" gets close to it.
3:15 - "We aren’t here to decode the system. That’s Colin’s job and you’ve seen what a delight it’s made him. Just try to learn your codes and process your cases." Interestingly, while Gwen is determined to take this job seriously and process incidents to the best of her ability... she still seems to willing to overlook some of the absurdities and look deeper.
3:33 - "Then quit. No-one’s making you work here." Gwen can be mighty capricious at times. I think she might have taken Sam saying even she doesn't have perfect memory of the system as a blow to her ego. Alice doesn't want to take the job seriously at risk of it feeling real, and Gwen herself has said a lot of "hopeless wasters" come into this job. So why does Gwen take it so seriously? What is her goal here? Why does she even want Lena's job when everything about the job seems so... obfuscated.
4:32 - "Hey Gwen? Gwen? Gwen? Time isn’t real." Did I mention I love Alice?
8:40 - "I was meant to be doing a portrait for some generic witchy alchemist and it was when I was researching the symbols and stuff that I came across “Ink5oul”" It's always the symbols. And Ink5oul is already being associated with alchemy.
9:39 - "Looking beyond into the interior, it seemed like more of the studio was dedicated to ring lights and photography gear than tattoos!" It's like the focus is all on being scene. Being perceived. Not just having the tattoo for yourself, others, EVERYONE seeing it. I think this whole thing is pretty Flesh-coded, and that's only gets more intense the further this goes. It's the relentless observation of the body. The soul doesn't matter. Appearance does.
9:56: - "they had an absolutely gorgeous floral serpent design running up their arm and into their neck that was so vivid it looked ready to slither off their skin and onto the chair." That tattoo has to come alive in a later episode. I want to hear an incident where this icon just siccs a tattoo snake on someone. I support non-binary wrongs.
10:40 - "Before I could reply they hit a button on their set-up and suddenly we were live streaming with lights in my eyes and their arm tight around my shoulders. I don’t remember much of what they said to their viewers, but they kept telling everyone how lucky I was whilst they dragged me into the chair." You know, listening to this again now... I'm getting Mr. Beast vibes. Like it's awful. "Oh, I'll do this charitable thing for you, you just need to agree to let my exploit your image to be ravenously consumed by my thousands of fans! I'm not even going to give you a warning, just start being content! If you aren't content, then what's the point of your existence?" Ugh. Gross. And then the immediate painful torture. This would be a nightmare for me.
11:35 - "I wanted to scream but I couldn't even breathe as it felt like thousands of wasp stings ravaged my body whilst mediocre dubstep thrummed through my chest and Ink5ouls chatted to their viewers completely unconcerned." 11:57 - "The stream was over and I was apparently forgotten." 12:39 - "Just as suddenly as the lights had turned on, they were off and I was bundled towards the exit. No debrief, no aftercare." This really gets to me also. The sheer... banality of it. Imagine going through the most unimaginable torment you have ever experienced, having your flesh merciless carved into... and someone is just playing shitty EDM over it. It's the worst day of your life but to the person causing it, it's just Tuesday. They're not even really being sadistic, they aren't relishing in it, it's just... nothing to them! And then you're just thrown out, like a product that's been used! There's no conclusion, no explanation, no catharsis, just intense pain and then it's over and you're expected to just move on like nothing ever happened. Awful.
15:04 - "Looking around me, I realised that all of my paints were still out" So as a rational person not being mindscrewed by alchemical symbols on your tattoo feeding on your body dysmorphia, you used the paints on the portrait, right? Right?
15:32 - "I began to take a pallet knife to the left eye. Just a small tweak. It was as subtle change, barely noticeable but I knew I was making progress, because I could feel when the knife scraped bone." :( I had to double back when I first listened to this. And then triple back. I thought she was talking about the canvas. And she was. For a moment. And then she seamlessly transitioned into being the canvas. The switch is just, instant. There's no direct moment of it starting to blur or be confused, and I love that because it makes it so jarring. 16:42 - "It was small tweaks at first" Proceeds to give very extensive list to 'tweaks'. Just completely broken from reality and now looking for anything and everything to fix. And there is ALWAYS something to fix.
19:50 - "If I wanted to clear the canvas, I would have used turpentine." The nonchalance of this line makes me laugh. I'm a bad person.
20:40 - "Just stop paying attention.. Don’t look at me like that, I’m serious. I just skim the case for keywords, and if it’s a talker I hit play and get on with other work." I've already said my whole thing about this. Sam does not seem to want to accept the horrors of the world however. The absurdity of the systems, the way the computers haven't updated since the 90s. He forces himself to listen to the incidents. He wants to figure out what things mean. He wants to make a change. Time will tell if this is a virtue, or if it will get him killed.
22:07 - "They’re “expanding external operations” and you know what that means. Outsourcing. Redundancies" I don't think that's what Lena meant. I think that was code. Code for what? Something bad, probably.
24:46 - "Er yeah, that should be fine. It’ll need to be after the 28th though as that’s payday." What's going on with Alice's brother? Is he in a tough spot since his music career hasn't kicked off yet and he needs to ask Alice for cash?
I really do love this episode. Body dysmorphia is one of my favorite aspects of the Flesh, and this gave all of the vibes. I know we aren't going to have the same clear-cut entities as TMA, but still.
Woof. This was a lot of yapping. First Shift was 10 to 15 minutes longer than the rest of the episodes though. Now I'll be able to get to episodes I haven't seen yet! See you then!

Thanks for your TMA liveblogging! It felt like hearing the story for the first time again! So excited to hear about your thoughts on protocol, it's a ton of fun up until now!
Aw, thanks! It's been a blast listening to all the episodes, I feel like it's been a while since I've gotten so heavily invested in something. Can't wait to see what happens in Protocol!

i'm suffering under the curse rn BUT. i am 3 episodes in to The Magnus Protocol and so far my thoughts are that it seems pretty good! on the one hand i should probably do my best to separate tmagp from tma but at the same time, i mean, the only reason i'm listening to tmagp is bc of prior attachment to tma, so it's interesting to me to contrast and compare them (though in all fairness it's been a while since i listened to tma).
the new cases are definitely cool so far in terms of allowing for more formats, i wonder if we're gonna get any future explanation for their eloquent presentation like we did in tma since idk if there's any hints so far at what the whole worldbuilding deal is with that so far in tmagp.
i will say that- do to the different formatting and immediate bigger cast who gets more focus and whatnot- tmagp feels more 'TV' in a certain way. which isn't a pejorative statement and i actually really dislike it when ppl assume something being 'TV' means it's low quality or shallow, lol. tmagp is a good example of something feeling 'TV' but it's a notable difference and is casting my mind back to the discourse/discussion about a tma tv adaptation and what that would look like back when archive 81 got one. i imagine it'd feel a lot more tmagp inspired.
cast is cool so far! i admire alice's actress for being able to pull of the extremely tumblrific dialogue (which i know is on purpose but was also VERY off-putting to me at first- it's the kind of thing that i love when written but spoken aloud in a fictional setting sometimes raises my hairs for some reason). i already love gwen, she's defs gonna be the toxic woman i get attached to and then regret it (assuming i listen to more episodes which i hope i do? i'm not great at it but i do like finishing things, my brain is just pulled into all directions rn if that wasn't already apparent). Colin you're great, i can't wait to watch you break down. Sam you're great too in a way that your personality rn makes me very excited for your potential future corruption arc (obligatory reminder i'm only 3 eps in and just making educated guesses based on what jonny and co did for tma, though i do acknowledge that there's a lot more fingers in the proverbial protocol pie rn)
in general i'm curious about the direction of the show, namely how they're gonna make it tragic in a way that's different to tma? bc i always maintain that the beauty of tma is the slowburn, and how everything happens so slowly that by the time you realise what path we're on, it's too late to stop any of it, and the more you learn about these people and this world, the more you realise it was always going to end like this, even if it didn't have to.
it's a tough feat to pull off and the inherently different structure of tmagp makes me wonder if they're gonna have to pivot what kind of tragedy this is. it's probably apparent right now to anyone who's properly caught up but as for me? i'm curious and cautiously interested. idk if i'm ever really gonna get involved with the fandom like i did with tma (bc that was a mostly great but also wild and formative experience for me and in general i'm bad at being multifandom no matter how much i wish i could be bc it would make my life sooo much easier. but unfortunately the shape of my autism (title of my new movie and/or hit single /j) does not allow for it with any ease. only struggle)
anyway i have an essay on political cinema to write so i really need to close this window lmao. will perhaps consider some kind of liveblog or sequel post to this as my listening progresses

oh, our dream last night.
the first dream we had we were in a void listening to an episode of tma but we don't remember what happened. and we liveblogged it. @thr4shit was there in a blanket nest with us.
every dream after this, michael distortion was in them all (so, in a way, most likely still thrash considering we're personally not that far in the series).
in one of our dreams i successfully manipulated the scene around us. i had a water bottle half full and shook it while saying "you're full." and it worked. it was full.

The Magnus Protocol- Episode 1: First Shift
Sooo, first a bit of a confession I did not actually finish listening to TMA before listening to this start of this series. I kinda dropped off somewhere around season 2 or 3 trying to catch up while season 5 was still airing!!
Not at all due to a lack of interest I was very invested! I just burnt myself out on podcasts since i was following a bunch of other podcasts alongside Tma at the time, and when i felt i could finally stomach listening to another podcasts again TMA had already ended and it felt like such an intimidating amount of episodes to listen through since had been maybe over a year since i lasted kept up with the series. Plus i did not all keep myself away from spoilers about the ending so yeahhh…. whoopsie!
spoilers don’t ever ruin a show for me, especially out of context ones, but for the sake of maintaining my own attention span. I shall be making an attempt to avoid spoilers for once in my life <3
now all that preamble aside, oh man… i love all the new varied accents but I really needs the transcripts on standby this time round, because i lost track of who was talking real fast, with maybe Colin as the sole exception to my confusion.
That distinct Scottish accent is blissfully easy for my ears to latch onto through all the confusion. i dearly hope despite the death flags, he doesn’t join a certain kayaking trip any time soon.
as for Sam, I like him so far! maybe its just because his new guy but he seems like he has an nervous yet easygoing vibe to him so far, low key kinda of remind me of myself whenever i’m working a new job, terrified of fucking up and eager to please! should be fun to figure out what his like when he come his his shell a bit more
and Alice….she worries me a lil bit ngl She is the reason Sam got this job in the first place and was the one to introduced him to the statements…Gwen worry me as well too…the fact she’s trying to move up the ranks of THIS job specifically is highly suspicious to me
as for the first statement, eh was bit weak didn’t quite, grip me the same way the Angler statement did. Now the second statement(?) the institute being in ruins is very very interesting, and very very worrying.
Does this mean everything is taking place in The Somewhere Else universe? if so I’m not sure which would be worse, this all taking place Before Jon and Martin bring the horrors on over or after.
