HEADCANONS
strained relationship with parents. when kotoki became an airbender after the harmonic convergence, their parents shipped them off to tenzin in order for them to learn to harness their abilities. kotoki had already been severely neglected beforehand, but after being sent away, contact between them and their parents ceased entirely.
obsessed with tenzin. after arriving to train with the other newly awakened airbenders, kotoki and tenzin quickly developed a codependent relationship; kotoki made tenzin feel very important and powerful, and tenzin made kotoki feel cared for and special. the two gradually began to engage in a sexual and almost-romantic relationship. without any other form of support, kotoki began to obsess over tenzin, following him like a duckling and quickly becoming his "apprentice".
friendly with korra + bolin. even though they aren't particularly close, kotoki is much friendlier and more familiar with them than anyone else, aside from tenzin of course.

The Myth of Y/N (Korra x Reader) Part 37
Y/N ALONE - PART TWO
Y/N’S POV
The unrolled scroll sprawls across the wooden table like an infinite river of knowledge. The words are halfway into fading into nothingness, emphasising the ancient energy emitting from them.
So much knowledge from one mere text.
Ever since I became an airbending master, I have realised just how many responsibilities there are to be a leader of a nation. I am now responsible for teaching students and future Air Nomads who will go on to teach the next generation and etcetera. It can be overwhelming.
However, there are perks to being a master.
I was pleasantly shocked when Tenzin told me I was allowed to access and read the books and texts from his office. Normally, only he’s allowed to be in his office (for obvious reasons) and to have a look at the stuff he has collected over the years. But, like I just found out that Jinora is allowed to have a look too, he said I have his permission to go through and expand my knowledge on our culture.
And, right now, that is exactly what I am doing and I have learned that, despite being a master, I still have much, much to learn.
This scroll, in particular, is for a special research project I have had in mind for a while now. And, as I read its contents, my intrigue is amplifying as I learn more about the infamous site that tormented me:
The Fog of Lost Souls.
Over two years ago, Jinora and I were trapped in the desolate place by Unalaq’s dark spirits. While Tenzin was able to save us, including Bumi and Kya, the memories of what happened in the fog itself were almost entirely erased. We were able to recover bits and traces since then, the overall experience is an empty spot in our minds.
But I know something happened there. The last few thing I can remember in the fog was Jinora and I being separated after running away from something. After that? Blank.
I asked Tenzin about the Fog of Lost Souls and he told me that apparently, from the contents of the text I am reading right now, that it is actually a spirit who infects the minds of its prisoners, imprisoning them in their own darkest memories and driving them to insanity. Overall, a fate worse than death.
I didn’t think much of it at the time but, a few days ago an idea came to mind. A very intriguing but dangerous idea.
A light knock on my bedroom doors brings me out of my thoughts.
“Come in.”
I hear the two doors slide open and I turn to face the visitor.
It’s Tenzin, dressed robes of red and yellow that makes him look awe inspiring.
“Y/N, I hope I am not intruding.” The older airbender asks in a gentle tone.
I smile at seeing my mentor and gracefully rise from my chair. “Of course not, Tenzin. Is there something wrong?”
He walks closer into my room and gives me a smile of his own. “No, nothing wrong. I just have a task for you, if you don’t mind.”
“What is it?”
“I’ve heard from reports that there are pirates stealing supplies from ships travelling in-between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom. From what I’ve read, the United Forces have not been able to capture them. I was wondering if you would want to assist them.”
My eyebrows raise slightly in interest. Pirates, huh?
“Of course, I’ll get everything ready and head out as soon as I can.” I tell him. “Besides, it will give me an excuse to stretch my legs and have a change in scenery. I’ll fly by the Fire Nation once I’m done to see if there’s anything I can do there to help. I’m sure Fire Lord Izumi would appreciate it.”
At the sound of my agreement, Tenzin’s smile widens in gratitude. “I suppose she would.”
I then see his eyes move slightly to behind me and I know he is looking at the scroll sprayed out on the table. “I see you have already started your reading.”
I nod. “I’m researching about the Fog of Lost Souls.”
That clearly wasn’t what the wise master expected as his jaw drops slightly. “That’s an odd starting topic. Is there a specific reason why?”
I nod again. “Yeah…”
“What is it, Y/N?”
I swallow aloud. Tenzin is really not going to like this.
“It’s been nearly three years since I had my vision, Tenzin. Nearly three years and I still remember nothing except “Only justice will bring peace.” Despite the countless meditations and techniques, we’ve tried, I am still nowhere close to remembering the rest of it, let alone what it actually means. I was fine with being patient but then…an idea came to my mind.”
Tenzin’s left eyebrow rises slightly. “What kind of idea?”
Well, here it goes.
“I remembered what you said that the Fog of Lost Souls forces you to relive your darkest memories. I can’t remember what I saw in there but…what if the fog showed me the rest of my vision?”
As soon as the question leaves my lips, I know I made a mistake. Tenzin’s eyes widen in horror as he realises what Im proposing.
“No.”
Dammit.
“Tenzin-“
“-Y/N, it’s too dangerous. Do you have any idea how crazy this sounds?“
“-Yes, I know, but-“
“-I barely got you and the others out last time. I don’t want any unnecessary risks.”
“-But-“
“-Even if you were able to escape the fog a second time, can you even be certain that the rest of the vision will appear to you, let alone you being able to remember them?”
“No! No, I’m not. But, Tenzin, its been nearly three years and I’ve made no progress! The Fog of Lost Souls could be the key to learning the truth!”
“But at what cost?” He asks gravelly and then places his hands on my shoulder. “Y/N, listen to me. I know you are frustrated. I know you are still concerned about your vision. But risking the chance of eternal suffering for answers is not worth it.”
“But-“
“-No buts.” Tenzin says with a new found sterness, hard as steel. “You will not go to the Fog of Lost Souls. Promise me.”
Frustration grows within me as I clench my hands into fists. He’s talking to me like I’m one of his children. Normally, I’d love that but this concern is holding me back from learning more!
I don’t say all of that, though. I don’t want to cause a heated argument. Besides, with everything that’s happening I need to stay here. I can’t risk being trapped for eternity and leave my family.
So, as much as I am angry, I have to follow along…for now.
I concede.
“Fine. I won’t go.”
Tenzin lets out a relieved sigh and let’s go of my shoulders. “Good. I know you are frustrated, and I know I’ve told you this countless times but the best course of action is to be patient. The answers will come in due time.”
I nod melancholy. “I suppose you’re right.”
“Besides, sometimes the answers we seek come from the most unlikely of places. Perhaps, you will find more about your vision when you least expect it.”
As Spectre finally leaves the blanket of clouds, I spot it immediately. From a distant, it looks more like a giant claw, ready to engulf anything in sight. The mountains that are ontop of the sharpened claw make it look armour that rises to touch the sky.
Kyoshi island.
We have arrived.
“Attaboy, Spectre!” I tell him encouragingly. “We’re finally here.”
I freeze when I spot them.
There, by the lagoon, are airships which I recognise are from Kuvira’s fleet. Terrific.
What could Kuvira possibly want from Kyoshi Island?
Spectre growls at the sight of them and I gently smooth him. “Easy, Spectre. Just get us to its village without them spotting us, okay?”
Luckily enough, we pass over them without them even spotting us. At least, I think we went by undetected. Hopefully.
Soon enough, we eventually make it and, surprisingly, despite some banners and flags there are no troops anywhere. Just…normal people. And the village itself looks…fine. Normal, in fact. It looks fairly rural, built from simple wood. And yet, it looks far cleaner and well-off than the previous village I was at. Maybe Kuvira doesn’t have much influence here?
As we land, I see that people have noticed us and ever so slowly a small crowd of people being to edge closer and closer to the bison and I, curiosity overpowering them. When I get off Spectre, a lanky middle-aged man with black, and a hint of grey, hair walks past the crowd followed by…
By Kyoshi Warriors!
The descriptions, drawings, and images I’ve seen on the books I’ve read do the female fighters zero justice. As with their tradition, their armoured kimonos and white as snow with a hint of red face paint was designed to make them all look spitting images of Avatar Kyoshi, to intimidate anyone who dared stand in their way. And a dozen of them are behind this man, who now appears to be the village’s leader.
“You are an Air Nomad.” The man simply states, his voice gruff and tough which contrasts his rather stick-like figure.
I nod in confirmation. “I am Master Y/N of the Air Nation. It is an absolute honour to meet you. And you are?”
“I am Muyang, the leader of this village.” He replies. “Why are you here?”
I raise an eyebrow slightly at the tense tone of the man’s voice. What has been going on here? Maybe he’s just on edge from something?
Still, I can’t just say it out in the open. The last thing I want to do is cause panic on the small island. I need to discuss this alone.
“I wish to discuss this in private, if you don’t mind.” I tell him.
Muyang frowns for a moment but then relents. “Very well. Come.”
I quickly turn back to Spectre. “You stay here. Just move into the woods and stay there so Kuvira’s men don’t spot you. And…try not to cause any trouble, okay?”
I walk off without giving the bison any time to respond and follow the village leader, with Kyoshi Warriors surrounding us in a rough circle. We do not utter a single word throughout the small journey but eventually we make it to what I presume is Muyang’s house. It is slightly bigger than the other ones, with a triangle shaped roof to mark its uniqueness.
When we finally enter, we all stand still like statues.
“You have your privacy.” Muyang tells me sternly. “Now, tell us why you’re here.”
Here it goes.
I straighten my back and clasp my hands behind me. “I am conducting a search on Avatar Korra. She has been missing for six months.”
“The Avatar is missing?” A rough feminine voice emits from the right, and I see one of the warriors walk up to the side of the middle-aged man. Perhaps she’s the leader of the other fighters? “How?”
I shrug. “I don’t know. The last person who saw her was her father, Chief Tonraq of the Southern Water Tribe, when she left to travel to Republic City. She hasn’t been since.”
“That still does not answer my question.” Muyang reminds me. “Why are you here?”
“I had a vision.” I tell him cautiously. “I saw Kyoshi Island. I…I assumed it was a clue to Korra’s whereabouts.”
As I speak it out, I realise how silly it sounds. A single image of an island and I immediately link it to my search for Korra? There’s little to no evidence that the two are even connected.
But it had to mean something, right? What else could it have meant?
“I see.” Muyang says hoarsely after a few moments of silence. “Well, I’m sorry to say but Avatar Korra is not here. We, nor the other villages, have seen her.”
My heart shatters at his answer. No…
“Are-Are you sure?” I ask him.
“I’m sorry, but I’m sure.”
Worry, panic, and frustration boil in my stomach as I clench my hands into fists and swallow an ocean’s amount of saliva.
So, Korra isn’t here. But why was I given that vision? There HAS to be a meaning behind it. Maybe it has something to do with Kuvira’s fleet?
“Now with that business is over with, you are free to lea-“
“-What are Kuvira’s army doing here?”
The Kysoshi Warrior, who had a neutral expression throughout the conversation, scowls. “What they are probably doing with the rest of the Earth Kingdom: Seizing control.”
“I was under the impression the Kyoshi Warriors supported what Kuvira was doing.” I slowly say, trying not to offend anyone. “I’ve heard how Kuvira was awarded the Kyoshi Medal of Freedom, the highest honour of the nation.”
“That was before we found out who she really was.” She angrily replies. “By the time we realised we were tricked, it was too late. She ordered some of her men to stay behind to make sure no-one enters or leaves. They robbed us of our communications so we couldn’t contact the rest of the world.”
I curse under my breath. Dammit! I knew Kuvira has gone mad. I guess this explains why everyone was so tense earlier when I arrived.
“I’ve been warning President Raiko about Kuvira for months and he didn’t listen once.” I say. “I have a feeling he will soon realise just how wrong he was to ignore me.”
I then realise something and point to the direction behind me. “Why are they all at the lagoon then? When I swooped by, I saw an airship and the troops there.”
“For their own supplies, no doubt.” Muyang grunted.
So…what? They just leave them for a bit and they…do nothing?
I turn back to what seems to be the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. “And you just…let it happen?”
That seemed to tick her off as she snarls and glares daggers right in my eyes. “You think we want this? What choice we have? If we fight back, more of Kuvira’s men will arrive and punish everyone on the island. I will not allow that to happen.”
I…I guess she has a point. But still just doing nothing feels…wrong. These are definitely not the Kyoshi Warriors I have read about in the books.
“Which is why you have to leave.” Muyang says sternly. “If they spot you, you could put our whole island on jeopardy.”
No way I came all the way here just to immediately leave. There has to be a reason why I got that vision. Maybe…Maybe I was given that vision because of Kuvira’s fleet? Because I am supposed to be here when whatever happens, happens? Spirits, this is so confusing.
“I can’t.” I tell him. “Not yet anyway. I was directed to here for a reason. Just give me a day at least and I’ll leave in the morning. Please.”
The leaders of the village and the Kyoshi Warriors exchange looks that, while appear to last for seconds, makes it feels like I’m waiting for centuries. Their expressions are unreadable, but I can tell they are silently arguing.
Eventually, Muyang turns to me.
“Yukari will take you to the Kyoshi Shrine and watch over you. You leave first thing in the morning. Do you understand?”
I nod frantically. “Of course. Thank you so much.”
The Kyoshi Warrior Leader, who I now know is named Yukari, walks up to my side. “Let’s go.”
The journey was long and silent, not a single word uttered between us. Its clear to me that Yukari isn’t that much of a speaker.
After who knows how long, we arrive.
And it is definitely not what I had expected.
I have seen and read pictures and descriptions of the Kyoshi Shrine and what it was like during the Hundred Year War. From the books, they described it as a small village temple within a small stone floor.
But now? Now, the shrine looks revamped. Its much wider than its predecessor and in front of it has statues of Avatar Kyoshi in fighting positions. It emanates a mere fraction of the power the Earth Kingdom’s Avatar had.
Yukari must have saw my shock as I can hear her chuckle to my side. “Not what you expected?”
I silently shake my head. “Not at all. The books I read made it sound…smaller.”
“That was what it was like during the Hundred Year War.” Yukari says as we approach closer to the temple. “It was badly damaged when some pirates and bandits attacked. My grandmother led the warriors to victory and after the battle thought it would be wise to revamp it to further praise and honour Avatar Kyoshi.”
I hum in acknowledgement. “Your grandmother sounds pretty cool.”
I then freeze to stone as I begin to connect the dots.
Grandmother…
Led the Kyoshi Warriors…
No way…
I stare at the back of Yukari’s head. “Was your grandmother Suki by any chance? Like, the Suki?”
The Kyoshi Warrior stops in her steps and drops her head with a heavy sigh. “Yeah.”
My jaw drops to the ground.
NO WAY!
“You’re Sokka and Suki’s granddaughter!” I exclaim excitedly. “Wow! It’s an honour to-“
“-Stop it.” Yukari interrupts with a harsh tone. “Don’t make a big deal about it.”
Oh…
That…wasn’t what I was expecting.
“I-I’m sorry. I just-“
“-Excited to meet a descendant of the heroes of the Hundred Year War? You’re not the first one.”
Oh…
Wait a second. If she’s Sokka and Suki’s granddaughter…
“Aang and Toph’s kids never mentioned you.” I pointed out to her as we finally reach the entrance to the shrine. “I just assumed Sokka and Suki never had kids.”
“They had one. My mother, Kanna.” Yukari says quite quickly. Its clear she doesn’t like talking about it and is trying to clarify the confusion as fast as she can so I won’t ask any more questions. “She was the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors before me. I took up the mantle. The reason you’ve never heard of me probably stems from the fact that I cut ties from the rest of my family.”
My eyes widen in shock. Why would she do that?
“Why?”
She then glares at me full of annoyance. “If I answer, will you please shut up about it?”
I nod frantically.
“If you really must know, I cut ties with them because I was sick of it all.” She says with a hint of venom. “The expectations, the fame, all of it. It was what ruined my parents’ marriage and drove my mother to an early grave. I didn’t want a single reminder of where I came from. So, I said goodbye and burned my bridges. Kyoshi Island is my home, and the people here are my family. Nothing else matters.”
She glares at me again, her brown eyes piercing into mine. “Does that answer all your questions, Air Nomad?”
The acid in her voice makes me mute. All I can do is nod and in response the tension in Yukari’s body releases slightly. “Good. Now, since you’re going to be here and I’m supposed to watch over you like a good babysitter, I might as well show you around. Follow me.”
Before I can even respond, she walks inside. I stand there for a few seconds, processing everything I have just learned.
I…I had no idea things were that bad. I’m used to being recognised and I have some sort of popularity, but I never really considered the bad sides of it. I’ve seen Korra get her fair share of critics but most of the time she didn’t really let it bother her. And I haven’t really got that much at least when compared to her.
But with Yukari…it seems like she suffered a lot because of it.
“Air Nomad, come on!”
Snapping out of my thoughts, I rush into the Kyoshi Shrine and my eyes wide in awe as I see the interior. So many artifacts used by Avatar Kyoshi including her fans, boots, and headpiece. Not just that, but there are also little sections of writing that detail bits and pieces of her life.
“Wow…”
“Impressed?”
“Definitely. Then again, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Avatar Kyoshi lived for over 200 years, right?”
“That’s right. She’s the longest living Avatar in history.”
I can’t imagine living for centuries. There is so much you can do in that time. Roku was left for dead by Sozin, Aang died at sixty-six. Could Korra perhaps live that long?
Yukari shows me each and every bit and piece of artifacts and texts of history of events the Avatar participated in. I recognised most of them, one of them being the creation of Kyoshi Island and the death of the infamous Chin the Conqueror.
But then, as she’s explaining the details surrounding some other event, I notice something at the very end. I lean slightly forward and squint and when I read the text my eyebrows raise in surprise.
That’s interesting. I’ve never read anything like that before.
When I zone back in, I can hear Yukari still talking.
“And that was when Avatar Kyoshi established the Dai Li and-“
“-What’s the Kyoshi Civil War?”
My interruption freezes her rambling and before she can ask, I walk up to the stand and see what it says. I am a bit disappointed to see that there isn’t that much detail compared to the others.
“That…was probably the darkest period of Avatar Kyoshi.” Yukari reluctantly says as she comes up to beside me. “It happened during the twilight years of her era.”
“What happened?”
Yukari sighs heavily, the tension in her body returning. “Are you aware of the beliefs Avatar Kyoshi had?”
I do. All too well.
“Only justice will bring peace.” I recite. “That’s what she believed. She was willing to bring balance to the world by any means necessary.”
She nods in confirmation. “Yes, she was. And when she began the Kyoshi Warriors she taught us to be protectors of our homes and those in need. She taught us the same beliefs she had. And, for the majority of the duration of her era the organisation had little issue. However, near the end, there was a…friction.”
“Friction?” I echo, titling my head in confusion. “What kind of friction?”
Yukari sighs once more, clearly finding the topic difficult to talk about. “There was one warrior who believed we and Avatar Kyoshi weren’t doing enough, that we could be doing so much more. She witnessed corruption persisting in the world despite our efforts. And so, she believed we should increase our numbers and expand and increase our influence and control on all nations to eradicate the scum of the Earth. The Avatar disagreed, claiming that her beliefs were dangerous and could lead her down a dark path that will bring more harm than good. At the time, they all thought that was the end of it. Little did Kyoshi and the rest know was that the warrior was conspiring and plotting against them in secret and growing an army of her own followers.”
My mouth part slightly, stunned at how this one warrior was able to this right under the nose of an Avatar. She must have been really skilled at deception.
“What was this warrior’s name?”
Yukari takes a deep, long breath and clench her hands into fists. After a long, tense exhale she utters two words.
“Lady Yuchin.”
I frown in concentration as I try to remember if I ever heard of that name before but…nothing. Blank.
“I’ve never heard of her.”
“I would be surprised if you did.” She chuckles without humour. “The Earth Kingdom used to have more history of her but most of the knowledge was lost during the Hundred Year War. What you see is all we have.”
Spirits…so much information was lost because of the Fire Nation. So much.
“What happened after that?”
“Eventually, she and her followers were discovered.” Yukari continues. “It is unknown what happened specifically, but they somehow escaped and hid. Then, after a short period, Lady Yuchin returned to public light and disowned her loyalty to the Avatar and the Kyoshi Warriors and begun her own organisation, declaring that they will not rest until they take control of the world and eradicate the corruption from within and anyone, even her former allies, who dared to stop them will suffer.”
Spirits…
“And what was this organisation’s name?”
“We don’t know.” Yukari simply says, shrugging nonchalantly. “That bit of information has been lost. However, after she was killed in battle her followers renamed their group after her to honour her memory: The Yuchin Order and its followers, the Yuchin Knights.”
She was killed?!
“How did she die?”
“The Kyoshi Civil War lasted for five years. Lady Yuchin died in the Battle of Shamu during the third year of the war, killed by the Avatar herself. The Yuchin Order’s numbers were growing very fast and so did the Kyoshi Warrior’s to combat them. Many lives were lost. But after Yuchin’s death was when the tide turned to our favour. Without her leadership and guidance, many of the Knights desired to take the role of the order’s master to fill in the power vacuum. Sources say that many of them betrayed and backstabbed one another to achieve authority. In the end, the Yuchin Knights’ worst enemy were themselves. Eventually, Lady Yuchin’s apprentice, Konrok, eventually obtained leadership and did achieve some success but, by then, it was too late. In desperation, Konrok launched one final attack on Kyoshi Island and, from what I read, it was an absolute bloodbath. Total carnage. Casualties were extremely high and most of the island was badly harmed. However, in the end, it was clear who had won. When the fighting stopped, all of the Yuchin were destroyed. None of them survived. And, after five brutal years, the Kyoshi Civil War was finally over.”
As she finally finishes the story, my jaw drops slightly.
Spirits…an entire civil war full of death and suffering and I had no idea it existed. I knew Avatar Kyoshi wasn’t perfect and experienced her own challenges and failures, but a full civil war?
Wait a minute…
“Why is it called the Kyoshi Civil War, though? Shouldn’t it have been the Yuchin-Kyoshi War or something?”
“You would think that, wouldn’t you? But no. Despite the philosophical differences, the majority saw the Yuchin as rogue Kyoshi Warriors. The Avatar was heavily criticised for the conflict after it ended but thankfully it didn’t tarnish her reputation. The Civil War prompted her to reduce the quantity of the warriors to prevent such a betrayal from happening again. And, thankfully, the group has experienced nothing but peace amongst its members.”
We stay silent for a moment as we feel the weight of the story. Just from hearing it I feel nearly crushed by the Civil War’s intensity. I couldn’t imagine what it was like to actually live in the Earth Kingdom during that period.
A new thought enters my mind, and the intensity amplifies.
Is…Is it possible that this was what my vision was about? About the Yuchin Order? If that is the case, why? To teach me some valuable lesson? Or, more terribly, to warn me about its return?
No. No, that was impossible. Yukari said herself that all of the Yuchin Knights were killed in the final battle of the war. There was no way they could come back.
I look up at the board and see a rough drawing of Kyoshi Warriors and Yuchin Knights engaged in a deadly battle. While the former were all women and were dressed to look spitting images of the Avatar they worship, their enemies were a mixture of male and female and dressed in golden yellow with night-sky boots. Some wore bulky armour, others wore mere robes, and others wore a combination of the two. They all wielded sharp silver swords tainted with blood, some wielding one and others wielding two.
“There are women AND men in the Yuchin.” I point out, filling the silence. “Why is that?”
Yukari hums in acknowledgement and deep thought. “I am not entirely sure because of the lack of information. But from what I gathered it seemed as if Lady Yuchin believed that the eradication of corruption was a task for all, not just for one specific category.”
Hm. Interesting. I look at the drawing again and I spot her. At the very back of the army is one female warrior elevated standing on some sort of platform to make her above the rest, marking her importance. Unlike the others, she wields a double-bladed sword and is using it to direct the charge against the Kyoshi Warriors, all the while her red cape is blowing along the wind.
This must be Lady Yuchin. To think, she was once a Kyoshi Warrior herself until her desire to eradicate corruption consumed and transformed her into becoming the very thing she despised. I have seen this with my own enemies over the years. Amon and Tarrlok despised their father and yet became just as bad as him, and now it seems like the same is happening with Kuvira.
“Yukari!”
The shout or, more accurately, scream of the Kyoshi Warrior Leader’s name startles both of us as we turn to the entrance. There, just outside the door, another of the female fighters is there but is shaking badly with…fear.
“What is it?” Yukari asks as she rushes over to her comrade and takes her in her arms. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Kuvira’s troops. More of them have arrived and are planning on taking complete control of the island!”
WHAT?!
Dammit! Since I’ve been gone for a while, the coronation of Wu has no doubt already happened. And since Kuvira’s troops aren’t standing down it means that their leader hasn’t given up her power.
Of course, she hasn’t. The power has gotten to her head and now she’s taking control of the entire Earth Kingdom. I shouldn’t have been surprised.
I was right. I was right. I. Was. Right.
The Kyoshi Warrior continues, and her words shake as much as her body. “Her men are calling Kyoshi Island and its people the property of the Earth Empire. Any resistance will have severe consequences.”

Avatar this time. I went with Korra bc I figured making myself an outfit that fit with that one would be easier, but it wasn't really. Still not sure I like the outfit I gave myself, but I'm fairly pleased with how the pro bending uniform came out.

I honestly think Bryke are ridiculously overhated. Like they’ve said and done somethings I disagree with, but Z (y’all know who) Ks take things way to far and act like a couple of misogynists who owed it to cave in and make their non-canon ship canon. They act like they hated Katara even though A:TLA and even LOK show that they clearly value Katara to a degree, they speak highly of her in behind the scenes interviews. And I am so tired of the nice-guy self insert argument when that was literally proven to be false.
now yall will never catch me defending white men for nothing LMAO
as much as i love atla, it’s not free of its criticisms, especially in how they write the oppressed characters. aang’s anger as a genocide survivor is often written as irrational (the northern air temple episode), and katara and sokka’s grief surrounding the fact that they are also genocide survivors is often overshadowed by their parental trauma—which is a valid aspect of their story to show but is not all their story should be. even azula is treated like an incurable monster by the narrative while the men around her are given redemption arcs and iroh’s history of and complacency in colonization is never actually given any consequences or addressed appropriately. so while i love atla and do believe it has pretty good writing, it is far far FAR from perfect as it is very obvious the writers are WHITE. this isn’t even including the cultural aspects that were misrepresented or plain out wrong or maybe even disrespectful
and they did do katara (and the rest of the gaang, mind you) dirty in tlok—just not in the ways zutaras claim—so i don’t think they are undeserving of their katara-related lashing either
what i will say is the whole “self-insert” allegations regarding aang are ridiculous because in what way are white men being represented in aang. aang falling in love with katara and having her return those feelings isn’t a “self-insert” because, what sounds more like a self-insert for western white men to yall:
a pacifistic 12-year-old monk whose people—of whom he is the only one left—have been genocided by a racist colonial regime entering a mutually reciprocated relationship with a brown indigenous girl who is also a genocide victim of said racist colonial regime OR
a powerful colonizing agent of a racist colonial regime entering a relationship with a brown indigenous girl who is a genocide victim of said racist colonial regime after he went through a hero’s journey of self-discovery
answer honestly. which version would a white man most likely see himself in or want to see in the media he consumes? if you’re confused, look to history and pay attention to how nations with colonial pasts (and presents) treat and portray oppressed women of color and get back to me

honestly.... kuvira has irl parallels w putin.
I mean yeah I've compared her to Stalin and WOW IT'S ALMOST LIKE RUSSIA HAS BEEN DOING THE SAME DAMN THING FOR DECADES. Like seriously it's starting to feel like fucking groundhog day man.
And look, I don't want to be the asshole who shames people for liking Kuvira. I like a lot of aspects of Kuvira's character.
She's hot, she's charismaric (mainly due to Zelda Williams but yk) and she's a relatively compelling character. People are allowed to enjoy a villain character without endorsing the shitty stuff those villains do.
Tumblr media
But there is a distinction between Kuvira the character and what Kuvira represents/the thinly veiled real life ideologies behind her.
Kuvira as a character is interesting, you know? Fun to talk about. Someone who was abandoned at a young age and proceeded to self sabotage her relationships and became a control freak who fears vulnerability due to that. Pretty standard villain shit. But fun, and there's a little more to her.
Kuvira as a representant of real world ideologies carries much more weight. People catch onto her Nazi imagery, but the Soviet stuff isn't as obvious. A lot of western europeans and Americans, the main demographic of Avatar won't immediately clock those influences behind Kuvira.
Tumblr media
To those countries, Soviet occupation of Eastern Bloc countries was just the cold war, the red scare, a looming threat that could cause harm, but was at least not capable of influencing their lives too intimately.
While the countries that were under the power of the Soviet Union still have that memory fresh in their minds. Hell, my mom grew up in the PRL, my uncle was a part of Solidarność. People remember that shit it wasn't that long ago. Reading literature from not that long ago like A Minor Apocalypse or Madame feels surreal. When I read memoirs or just heard stories from my older relatives, I could taste the atmosphere of bleakness, distrust and confusion.
So maybe I'm just more primed to notice how Kuvira's actions play into patterns of Russian aggression. Maybe when Western European and American viewers are more willing to give Kuvira the benefit of the doubt, or see merit in her actions, I'm more willing to look at her through the lenses of the ideologies she represents.
Throughout most of the show, we don't actually see that much of Kuvira as a character. She's more a silent, looming villain in the background and due to her more calculated demeanour, we don't get a lot of insight into her personality until the last two episodes. So maybe it's easier to look at her more as a representant of dangerous ideologies than as a character.
Tumblr media
Mind you, I don't think Bryke really thought through the implications of giving Kuvira the aesthetic and ideology they did. Nazis and to a lesser extent, Soviets, have become very much shorthand for "bad guy" in fiction. If they had thought this through, I wanna at least hope that they would have handled Kuvira more carefully.
Because by giving Kuvira a sense of moral ambiguity and the clumsy handling of her character, you have dumbasses ob reddit defending her. I'm genuinely shocked at the amount of Kuvira apologism in the tlok fandom.
But that goes back to the Western Bloc viewers and creators not really being familiar with the history Kuvira embodies. Not fully imagining the perspective of for example the people under her rule. Which is a perspective I am desperate to see, filling out the blanks with the history Kuvira draws from.
Most of B4 is seen through that 'outside perspective' of Korra and Republic City. Not unlike how a huge part of the narrative around the cold war and Ussr is the Cold War and how it affected Western Bloc countries.
Once again, the only characters who are actually part of the Earth Kingdom and have some experience with Kuvira's occupation are the Beifongs. But they are dismissed as biased, irrational, agressive or pushed aside when our heroic USA inserts get the spotilight. The fandom despises Suyin, derides Zaofu for not being the perfect victims. A story we see more and more of nowadays.
Suyin is depicted as "white woman liberalism" depsite being a leader of a community based, anti monarchist city which seems to allow it's citizens to flourish as artists and scientists and also refusing to seize power over a vulnerable country to hand it over to a monarchy she didn't support and then wanting to kill a fascist? But "ooooh Zaofu is culty and Suyin is a bit of a hypocrite" so I guess she's worse then the fucking Hitler Stalin lovechild that threatened to lay seige to her peaceful city.
Tumblr media
The Kuvira apologism in the fandom does sometimes give me similar vibes to Putin dickriding from Conservative americans tbh. At least that explains it.
The reason I'm so unsettled by so many people being blind to the ideologies and history Kuvira represents is because that ideology is not dead. It seems like a lot of westerners don't really seem to care about it anymore, but Russia is still commiting a genocide in Ukraine. Hell, it seems like people from countries that aren't close to the conflict kinda forgot that was still a thing. People are fucking dying, homes are being destroyed. And you think Russia will stop at decimating Ukraine? They're already hiring arsonists to cause chaos in Poland, they're not gonna stop.
These ideologies still cause pain and death today. They're not for cheap villains who can be watered down and excused by a sad backstory. And they're certainly not to he excused and supported by edgy fans who somehow didn't realise that the previous show was violently anti fascist.
Love Kuvira as a character, enjoy her, her storylines, her personality. But for the love of God, acknowledge what she represents, who she represents and that it's bad.
Tumblr media
Whew that kinda... got a little heavy. I apologise for the rant, I'm just very frustrated. By how Kuvira is woobified and exhonorated hy both fanon and canon, and by current events in the Ukraine and Poland and the rest of the ex-second world countries and the seeming apathy of the rest of the wider world.
Quick note: The terminology in this post may not be fully up to date, since a lot of terms have went out of usage and lost their meaning.

I feel like the upcoming kataang!movie they are gonna do a hell of a job compensating for everything that peeved people about tlok like have them mention how they are like so super happily married for every five seconds and that they have no marital problems, like, ever and that they are each other’s one and only 5ever and that Katara is happily a housewife if it means Aang can do his avatarly duty and that Zuko officiated their marriage to get back at those Zutara shippers or whatever
considering literally everything that has come out about kataang in the last half a decade has been nothing more than damage control for the show and early comics... yeah, i see it.
they literally shoved in a "look! aang does domestic work after all HAH!" even in the fucking cookbook that maybe like 2% of the fandom bought so the movie is definitely going to be chock full of entirely unsubtle moments put in solely as a fuck-you to anyone who dared criticize bryke's perfect self-insert ship. poor zuko's probably going to become the bryke soapbox on kat.aang just so they can rub it in our faces because "look! even zuko loves kat.aang what do you MEAN he would never say that shut up about his sizzling chemistry with katara - "
either ways, it makes no difference to me. they could have every single character turn directly to the camera and say aang and katara have the most perfect romance of all time, and that would still do absolutely nothing to fix how their relationship started in atla, and how it inevitably ended in lok. nothing they do in the gaang movie will retcon how utterly irrelevant katara became in the legend of korra, or the complete lack of respect aang (and the narrative) had for her agency and boundaries in atla.
short of inventing time travel and rewriting the show, the problems with kat.aang cannot be handwaved away no matter how much bryke tries to word-of-god it. it's a pity most of the general atla fandom is definitely going to eat it up, but i'll just be over here shipping my beloved zutara in peace and ignoring the fuck out of "canon" like i always have :)

it's pretty horrible thinking about how airbenders/air nomads are treated in canon (and as a result by the fandom). they were just existing peacefully for 1,000s of years, and sozin felt the need to wipe out their whole civilization because he saw them as weak (i know he mainly did it because he wanted to kill aang, but he also didn't want the air nomads to exist anymore). then throughout atla aang has to no only hear disrespect towards his people from randoms, zuko, who's supposed to be his friend, mocks his culture right to his face.
then in tlok the earth queen captures the new airbenders in ba sing se to use for her army. i know those people aren't air nomads, but there's something so sinister about airbenders, who have historically been know to promote non-violence/pacifism, being forced to fight.
then of course a certain section of the fandom hates aang for staying true to his culture and not killing ozai. it would honestly be laughable if it wasn't so sinister.
it’s sad really.
and then you have yangchen used as a scapegoat to undermine aang’s pacifism when her books actually show how beautiful air nomad culture was (and tibetan buddhism is) and how much she loved her culture, despite being a walking contradiction herself.
i mean like it or not, the canon and the fandom are largely reflected by the writers themselves. most of the 20-something of them being yt western men. and the writing shows it (along with the underdeveloped female characters, entire water tribe, etc.) aang and the air nomads never had a chance 💔
it’s actually so funny to me how the creators have gone on record saying their favorite characters are korra and zuko (and it shows) yet there are people that think a buddhist genocide survivor is the self-insert of a yt 40 year old american man. lol.

I keep thinking about that post that says Sokka should’ve taken Varrick’s place in TLOK and directed a movie based on Gaang’s experience with high romantic tension between Bolin’s character who is actually Sokka’s self-insert and Zuko’s character. And then I thought TAHNO would be the PERFECT Zuko-character actor. Sokka took one look at his emo ass haircut and went “you, i need you, a pro waterbender, to play a firebender with your pro-bending nemesis Bolin, I will pay you handsomely,” and that’s fucking ex-Chief Sokka of course you take the role.
Anyways Bolin and Tahno being extremely confused about how they ended up between Sokka and ex Fire Lord Zuko’s messy divorce which isn’t really a divorce because they found them kissing each other behind one of the sets(the image could not be burned otu of their eyes, they tried).
Zuko randomly showing up to be like “No you should play this moment with trepidation, confusion regarding the blossoming feelings but also a dedication towards Sokk- I mean Nuktuk.”
Tahno, terrified out of his mind: There’s a silver sandwich, take a bite out of it

The Myth of Y/N (Korra x Reader) Part 36
Y/N ALONE - PART ONE
Y/N’S POV
Wind rushes past my face as Spectre flies high into the air and dark sky at a speed that surpasses the speed of his previous flights.
FUCK FUCK FUCK
Korra has been gone for six months?! What happened to her?! Is she okay?! Is she safe?! Where is she?!
A low grumble emits from the bison’s mouth, its own way of questioning its human partner in their bond.
Where are we going? That’s what Spectre is trying to ask. A simple question. A simple fucking question.
And my answer?
“I don’t know, Spectre.” I mutter. Then, I shout into the night. “I DON’T KNOW!”
How am I supposed to find Korra when I have no damn clue where she is?
I rushed off without any plan, without any resources, and without telling my friends where I am going at all. They all must be worried sick.
I don’t have any food and drink with me. None at all. That’s a great way to quickly starve and dehydrate.
Should I turn back?
I look behind me and I see Air Temple Island, shrinking second by second as we get further and further away.
The temptation nearly takes me over. Logically, this is ridiculous. This is completely irrational. All the odds are against me. Really, I should turn back and plan with the others.
But…Korra has been gone for six months. She’s all alone. What if she’s been captured this entire time? What if she’s in danger?
The image of Tonraq holding a nearly dead Korra in his arms flashes in my mind’s eye and its all I can see. And, just like that, my decision has been made. Frowning in a determined gaze, I turn back to the open sea in front of me and I tighten my hold on the rope used to guide my bison.
“Keep a steady course, Spectre. Korra’s out there, somewhere. She might be in danger, and we must find her. I will find her. I don’t know how, but I will.”
“I will find you, Korra!”
I open my eyes and spin around in. No-one is here.
I’ve just finished counting to thirty seconds. There’s no way Korra managed to find a good hiding spot already, right?
Hmph. Well, if she did, it won’t matter. I’m the best seeker in the Southern Water Tribe! I’ll find her quicker than Prince Zuko found Avatar Aang during the war! I’ll show her!
I rush out of the room and look down left and right corners of the house. It doesn’t have much, just boring brown walls with little additions of paintings of some boring stuff I have no idea what are about.
Hm. Which way did she go? Left or right?
A short giggle echoes down the corridor from the right!
Ah ha! Korra is so bad at this!
“I’ve got you now, Korra!” I shout out and begin rushing down the corridor. “You may be the Avatar but you can be so easily caught!”
When I reach to the end of the corridor, I see two doors. One leads to the outside and the other to a very dark room.
Uh oh.
Knowing Korra, she would probably enter that one. She knows I get a bit scared in the dark so she thinks I won’t go in there! Well, I’ll show her!
I take a super, super deep breath and I charge!
“I’ve got you, Korra!”
I barge through the room and…
Nothing.
Huh?!
The room’s dark but I can see just enough and…there’s nothing. Just a bunch of boxes! Maybe she’s in the boxes?
I walk up to one of them and open the lid.
“BOO!”
“AH!”
I jump back and fall to the ground on my butt in shock!
Then, Korra starts laughing! LAUGHING!
“Hahaha, I got you!” She lets out, voice high. “You were like “I got you now!” and I was like “Boo!” and you were like “Ahh!”
UGH!
“Kooorrraaaa” I whine, getting up and brushing the dust from my clothes. I put my hands on my hips and I pout. “That’s not how you play hide and seek! You hide, I come and find you!”
“But its so borrriiinnnngggg sitting here and waiting for you to find me!” Korra whines back. “You’re so bad at being seeker, you would take hours to find me!”
WHAT?!
“I’m an amazing seeker!” I argue, crossing my arms.
“Are not!”
“Are too!”
“Are not!”
“Are too!”
“Are not!”
“Are too-ughhh, you tricked me!”
That only makes Korra start laughing even harder, her head back in the air and arms holding her belly.
Ugh!
But then, I look at the box and a smile creeps onto my lips. I quickly rush around the box and push so Korra spills out of it like water!
“Hey!” Korra lets out.
I cross my arms and smirk. “That’s what you get for calling me a bad seeker!”
“Well, I’m the Avatar so, whatever!”
“Oh, here’s the “I’m the Avatar” card.”
“That’s it!”
She lunges at me and I fall to the ground on my back with her on top of me. We have a habit of play fighting and this is so different as we twist and turn, giggling as we do so.
“Admit you’re a bad seeker!”
“Never!”
Then, the door suddenly opens wide and orange light pours into the room. Three people stand by the door’s entrance. On the left I see Dad and the other two are White Lotus members. Uh oh.
“Y/N, your father is here to collect you.” The White Lotus Guard says. “Korra, you got to get back to preparing for your final waterbending test.”
Oh man. Playtimes over?
“Okay.” We both say sadly and we get up on the floor.
“Good luck on your waterbending test.” I tell her.
Korra just smirks and crosses her arms. “I don’t need luck. I’m a waterbending master.”
I chuckle a bit and smile. I like seeing Korra so confident of herself. It makes me feel nice.
“Of course, Sifu Korra.” I tell her jokingly. Then, I pull her into a hug. She hugs me back even tigther and even lifts me up in the air.
After a few moments of silence, she puts me back down and we reluctantly let go of each other.
“Bye, Korra.”
Korra smiles softly. “Bye, Y/N.”
I walk up to Dad and we start leaving the compound.
“Did you have a fun time with Korra?” He asks me with a warm smile.
I nod really quickly. “Yep! We played a bunch of games! We played hide and seek before you guys came but Korra just wanted to scare me. She said I was a bad seeker too!”
Dad just chuckles and ruffles my hair. “Well, I think you are an amazing seeker. You always managed to find mum and I when we play together.”
See? Dad thinks I’m a great seeker!
“I tried to tell her that!” I huff out, then pout again. “She won’t believe me.”
Dad just ruffles my hair again. “Well, I suppose you would have to find and catch her next time.”
I smile. “You’re on it! I will! I’ll show her!”
Next time, Korra. Next time I will find you!
Hours. I have been awake for hours to the point that dawn has just broken loose and I’ve had no clue or trace or any idea how to find Korra.
And I’m fucking exhausted. So is Spectre. Each hour his flight speed decreases little by little. Now, he’s flying at the air bison equivalent of a snail’s pace.
Dammit.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I let out a frustrated groan. “Land, Spectre. We need the rest.”
Rumbling in satisfaction, he lands us to a small clearing on a mountain surrounded by an army of trees. Then, I fall on my back and let my furry friend’s soft hair bring me to a welcoming darkness and I let myself fall into its arms like an old friend.
Images flash through my mind. Images of an Earth Kingdom town filled with standard homes and standard citizens. Poverty and dirt fill the dark alleys like a disease waiting to be unleashed from the shadows.
Another flash and the scene has changed. This time, it’s a much bigger building, similar to that of a warehouse. People surround the entrance with intrigue and excitement.
Again, the scene changes. Now, its an arena, decorated with green, gold and silver with a symbol of a powerful fist crushing rock in the centre, with a claustrophobic cage trapping it. The image lingers and, this time, I hear voices surrounding me.
“You know, you look very familiar. Yeah, you ... you kind of look like that Avatar girl!”
“I get that a lot.”
“Whatever happened to her anyway?”
“I wouldn’t know.”
That voice…
“KORRA!”
I leap forward as my shout echoes across the mountains, so loud that it results in a scattering of birds. Spectre roars in panic at being abruptly awoken at the sound of my scream. Panting frantically with sweat flowing down my face like a waterfall, I bury my face into my hands.
That was Korra’s voice. That was definitely Korra’s voice. But those images…
When I fully joined the Air Nation and began my studies and training, I focused a lot on trying to gain more visions in hopes of finding any more clues on what the vision I experienced when Korra and I were held captive by Tarrlok was about. I barely remembered any of it. Future visions I had had the same fate, I barely remembered it.
Now, though? Now, I’m glad to know I was able to remember all of it.
It’s a clue. Korra was definitely in the Earth Kingdom and she was definitely fighting in what seemed to be an arena. But why? What for? Did Korra just…give up and start fresh?
No. No, don’t be stupid. Korra doesn’t give up. No, there’s got to be a good reason why she was there. Maybe she was forced to fight? But her conversation with that man didn’t appear like she was forced. So, what?
Releasing my face, I look back up and the black-orange sky is now gone, replaced by the blueish ocean high above symbolising that it is now midday. I have been asleep for a good amount of time. Now, I’m recharged.
Spectre grumbles in a questioning tone. Are you okay?
“I’m okay, Spectre.” I tell him, patting him. “I just had a vision. We now have a clue on where Korra is.”
From the vision, I saw that the town was right by the infamous woods and swamps. And, I have a feeling I will let the universe guide me to the right location. Just follow my gut.
“Let’s get going, boy. Yip yip.”
TIME SKIP
After a few hours of exploring the kingdom, I find it. The town looks just like what it did in my visions. Average rundown buildings with alleys littered with rubbish. We ride past it for a few minutes, trying to find that one building that housed the cage fight. It takes a while but eventually a find it.
“We’re here, Spectre.” I tell him. “Good job. You stay up here. I’ll call you when I’m done.”
After a grumble of acknowledgement, I flip off the air bison and with my airbending I propel myself like a fireball towards the building. Then, just before I hit the ground, I flip forward and spin around, slowing my speed until, finally, I land gracefully on the ground. As I do so, I see a number of citizens around me gazing at me with awe, jaws dropped in amazement.
I ignore their looks. Instead, I march towards my destination and head inside the building. After a few quick steps, I am greeted by a familiar site: An arena surrounded by a silver-grey cage, filled with colours of forest-green and golden-yellow with a powerful symbol of a intimidating fist destroying a piece of earth with its power.
This is the place all right. This is where Korra was. But now the questions are just resurfacing. Why was she here? Was she forced to fight? Or did she come here on her own accord?
“Oh, uh, you’re an Air Nomad!”
I turn to the left at the sound of the familiar voice. He’s a skinny man wearing a dark green jacket of some sorts with a shirt of a lighter shade of the same colour underneath as well as a grey, unkempt and baggy trousers. As for his face, he has a short and narrow spiky black hair with a thin black moustache and dark brown eyes. His sharp eyebrows are raised in surprise at seeing an Air Nomad of all people in such a violent setting.
That voice. I know that voice. It’s the one from the vision. This is the man who talked to Korra.
I approach the figure with a glare. “Are you in charge of this establishment?”
The sound of my steel voice causes him to back away a bit. Then, realising that he’s making a fool of myself, leans forward and stands straighter in an attempt to appear confident. “I am. What’s this about?”
“I am here to discuss about one of your fighters.” I tell him. “Specifically, one from a recent fight.”
Clearly my answer isn’t what he was expecting as he frowns slightly in confusion. “Uh, sure. But you do realise how many fighters come here, right? I don’t keep a log or anything.”
Dammit. Just when I thought I couldn’t run in any more problems Still, any bit of information will be useful.
“I am aware.” I lie so I don’t betray my intimidating image. “However, the one I am looking for will be easy for you to remember. Did you hire a fighter that looked like Avatar Korra?”
“Uh, yeah.” He says, confusion growing. “I did. She came in, asked to enter, got her butt kicked, I paid her, and she went on her way.”
So, she did come here on her own accord. But why? Surely, it couldn’t have been for money.
“Did you see where she went?”
The frown on the man’s face increases. “What’s this about?”
“Did you see where she went?” I repeat, adding further steel to my voice. I don’t have time to answer this guy’s question.
“No, I didn’t!” The man sputters, leaning back slightly in anxiousness. “I don’t track my clients!”
I look away from the man and mutter a curse under my breath. Dammit!
I guess that means I have to ask around if anyone’s seen Korra which might take a while. Terrific.
“What did she look like?”
“Blue eyes, short hair, wearing green.” He lists off. “She wasn’t Avatar Korra, right? She fought terribly!”
I shoot a glare back at the man and he silences himself immediately.
“Thank you for your cooperation.” I tell him professionally. “You will not reveal the details of this conversation to anyone. Is that understood?”
He nods. “Yep! You got it! Understood!”
I nod in return and, just like that, I walk back into the outside world.
Korra might still be in this town. Somewhere. She’s also trimmed her hair. Huh, Korra with short hair. Never thought that would happen.
I glance at my dark skinned hands that surround the bold and blue arrow tattoos that symbolise my mastery of airbending. I changed too…in more ways than one.
Staring into my eyes I see only oblivion, a sad darkness emanating over them. But that darkness is overwhelmed by the brightness that covers my skin.
Glancing upwards at my reflection from the dark ocean to the large, tattooed arrow on my forehead that stretches all way down my back. Moving my arms upward, I examine the same arrows on my hands.
It’s official. I am an airbending master. The first master of the Harmonic Convergence airbenders. The first master of the new airbenders.
The official ceremony of my ascension has been over for hours now. Everyone has either gone back to Republic City or gone to sleep on Air Temple Island. It was great. It was really great.
And yet…
Two years. It’s been two years since I’ve spoken to Korra and my parents. None of them were here to see me in my proudest moment of being an Air Nomad.
As much as I enjoyed and was honoured by it all, their absence amplified the emptiness in my heart. I really, really wish they were there.
Tears land directly on the arrows and my hands tremble.
Dammit.
“Y/N?”
Jinora!
Wiping the tears away, I turn to the source of the voice. Standing a few meters before me is Jinora in her pyjamas. Her hair is blowing elegantly in the wind and her eyes wash with concern.
“Jinora.” I greet in a neutral tone, hoping to not betray my sadness. “I hope I didn’t wake you.”
She shakes her head and she walks a few steps forward until she reaches my side, both of us standing at the very edge of the port of the island, pointing in the direction of the mystical and glowing golden lights of Republic City.
I turn back to gaze at the city alongside her, my cape breezing in the wind. The wind also brings a new chilly feeling to my now shaven head and I rub it a bit.
“Not used to it, right?” Jinora asks with amusement.
I chuckle, grateful at the attempt to lighten the somewhat sombre mood. “Yeah. I never thought I would go bald. I have to say, I’m really not liking the look. Can’t wait to get my beautiful hair back.”
The younger airbender laughs. “That’s exactly how I felt when my hair was shaven.“ she says as she touches a strand of hair and placing it away from her face. “I was relieved when I finally grew out my hair again.”
I hum in acknowledgement. “That was two years ago. It’s crazy how fast time has passed. Sometimes it feels like my life is riding on the fastest satmobile in the world.”
“I get what you’re feeling.” Jinora says. “With my new role as a master, I’ve gotten a lot of new responsibilities which means I’ve been too busy to notice the passage of time.”
“Well, now I am a master, we can share the responsibilities and your busy time could be halved. I’m sure Kai would really like that.”
Even in the night sky, I can see the red tinge on Jinora’s cheeks. “Shut up.”
“No, really.” I assure her. “He would. I know you would too.”
“I will.” She agrees, a smile forming on her lips. “There are times where we’ve been so busy that we barely spend time together. Not to mention the times where Kai or I have to go somewhere. But we’re doing good.”
I smile. “You love him, don’t you?”
Her blush deepens and shyly looks away. “I…I think I do. I know, its silly because of how young I am but…”
“Hey, your grandparents were around your age when they got together.” I assure her. “If you love him, you love him. Doesn’t matter how old you are.”
She glances back up at me and her smile widens. “Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it. And, in my opinion, I think he loves you too.”
And just like that, she blushes again.
I chuckle and I turn back to gaze back at the city. We stand there in a comfortable silence for a minute or two, the gentle wind acting as a soothing cool rather than a frozen current.
“You were thinking about Korra and your parents, weren’t you?” Jinora eventually asks with caution, careful not to disrupt the calmness of the situation.
I sigh heavily. “Am I that easy to read?”
“I’m a good guesser and you’re deflecting.”
I snort. Smart.
“Yeah. I was.” I answer her. “Its been two years since I spoken to any of them and they were not on the best terms. Not seeing them at my ceremony was…very difficult to handle.”
I turn back to her and give her a reassuring smile. “But I did have a good time. Really, I did. All of you there made me feel very proud of myself. I know all airbenders are our family but, really, I can only really say that to a select few. Team Avatar is my family but nowadays its just Mako, Asami, and I, and whenever Mako goes Prince Wu follows and you know how I feel about that. But, to be honest, since I stopped talking to my mum and dad, Tenzin and Pema have been second parents to me. And I care about Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan, I really do, but Jinora…you’re like a little sister to me. So, thank you. For everything.”
Immediately, two strong arms wrap around my waist and Jinora pulls herself to me in a tight hug, head pressed to my chest. I bent down slightly and hug her back, feeling a comfortable warmth swarming me.
“You’re the older sibling I never had.” Jinora says, her speech muffled but the family love obvious. “Thank you.”
My smile widens and all the bitterness I felt mere moments ago has now been vanquished, replaced by my love for my new family.
When we finally release from each other, much colder air blows against us and Jinora shivers. Best we don’t stay out here any longer.
“We should probably get some shut eye. We have a lot of stuff to do tomorrow.”
Jinora nods in agreement. “Yeah.”
Then, a smug smile forms on her lips and, all of a sudden, she dashes toward the island in a run. “Race you to the entrance!”
“Hey, that’s cheating!” I exclaim with a grin as I dash after her.
Times have changed. I have changed. But I know I will always have a family.
I have been exploring this town, asking strangers, exploring every dark alley I can find and I have found NOTHING!
Where in the spirits has Korra ran off too?!
DAMMIT!
I reach to the end of the town where nothing but forests lie ahead. Those trees stretch out forever, its practically a maze in there.
But, then, a thought comes to my mind.
Could…Could Korra be there?
I take a few steps towards the forest until I reach the very edge to the entrance of the labyrinth of green and wood.
I don’t see why Korra would go there but…maybe its worth a shot? I mean, I haven’t found anything in the town. It won’t hurt to quickly look around some of the forest, right? Maybe some clues might be there.
I take a step forward and place my hand on the trunk of one of the trees-
-AND A BLINDING LIGHT CONSUMES ME!
WHAT’S GOING ON?! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!
But the light fades and, in my mind’s eye, I see only one image…
A small, singular island. An Island I recognise all too well from the books I’ve read.
And, like that, the image is gone and I return to the here and now. My hand is still on the trunk of the tree.
That…That’s the first time a vision has happened when I’m not meditating or sleeping. This…This is new.
But, that doesn’t matter. No. This has got to be a clue where Korra went off to. It’s got to be! Why else would I have been given that vision? I don’t know why she’s there, but I’m about to find out.
I take one last glance at the silent woods and I turn and rush off to get to Spectre. When I finally meet up with him, I hop onto him and grab the rope to steer him to another direction.
The air bison lets out a questioning grumble. Where are we going?
I frown in determination.
“We’re going to Kyoshi Island.”

And that's it!
I hope you all enjoyed it!
Feedback is appreciated!
See you all in the next chapter! :D

I see so much shallow and missing the mark criticism against Korra and TLOK that forget that Aang also gets this kind of nonsensical negative criticism especially if not exclusively from zutara shippers, definitely not because personal biases and preferences.
It all comes back to 3 things
1 - Fans always see fanfiction as a “grass is greener” scenario
2 - Fans get attached to a certain character and view any other character’s presence as a threat
3 - Some fans get to a point in which they will defend an idea they have over any sort of evidence from the property they supposedly like
First off, the beginning point is always a big issue. Fans do not have to work to establish characters/settings/arcs when making fanfiction, theories, headcanons, etc. They do not have to think through the details so whatever they come up with automatically works in their head. In ATLA, many people created ideas of what WOULD happen while the show was airing and/or what would happen after the series ended, and it was always something that catered to their specific tastes more so than a realistic continuation of the story. It’s why not just a certain group of people were mad about the comics. No matter what, fans without a mature sense of reality were bound to think anything they came up with was superior to what the comics (or LOK by extension) was doing.
Second point, a lot of people’s hostility comes from their attachment to characters. It’s especially bad when it’s not the protagonist. Many people became unhealthily attached to Zuko and thus they view any sort of presence from Aang as “bad,” labeling everything he does as some sort of mistake or abusive behavior. They self-insert and then pick the most stereotypically attractive main character (Katara) as their OTP and then trash or sideline any character they don’t like. You can flip this for some fans (I.e. they attach to Katara, have a crush on Zuko, and then hate on every other character). What’s funny is that even the secondary character within the ship they love usually gets sidelined, as in many who love Zuko and ship Zutara shove Katara into an obedient mousy wife role. The people who got super attached to Aang thus hate Korra because she is much different from him despite filling the same role. They will downplay her accomplishments again as “mistakes” or “problematic” because it’s an easy excuse to make themselves feel correct.
And finally, people are more willing to defend their own ideas over any sort of canon because it’s easy to just say “canon bad” and move on. When both the headcanon and the misinterpretation of the story both lack any sort of context, the base level congruency in the argument is there. Any, literally ANY deeper dive will reveal the bullshit. In other words, you can defend the worst takes ever if you vastly misinterpret the show and prop up your own ideas based on that misinterpretation. That’s not real discourse, as much as those people like to say it is. It’s just fanfiction being championed as a “fix” to a story/character.
