I’m reading the LN version of the first attack on the Witch Cult and — oh my god, the anime totally undersold how much everyone else started seeing Subaru like a little boy in that loop.

He can’t fight, sure, they all knew that. They also already knew about his whole bratty grudge against Julius. But then they start seeing him freeze up when he sees dead bodies, and harshly blaming himself for the demise of soldiers, and feeling pity for Witch Cultists, and picking up an infamously dangerous Gospel like “ooh, shiny” — and you start seeing this shift in how the other characters start talking to him, because there’s details like Ferris making a point to emphasize that the dead soldiers they found died quickly and painlessly for Subaru’s sake, specifically, and Wilhelm having little quiet talks with Subaru about Subaru being scared of the dead bodies of the Witch Cultists because they “resemble dolls,” or coaxing him away from the dead soldiers while he’s having a bit of a breakdown while murmuring that “it’s not the time,” and later breaking him out of his spiraling into despair following Sloth’s surprise attack, and Wilhelm, Tivey, and Ferris all making a point to gently dissuade Subaru from sympathizing with the dead cultists while also humoring his little wondering about why anyone would do such a thing as to join the Cult, and Julius commenting after the surprise attack that Subaru did everything in his power to help and “the rest was our duty, as knights,” and even later offering to teach him the basics of the spirit arts —

It totally drives home how 1) Subaru is surrounded by soldiers and 2) Subaru is absolutely not anything even remotely resembling a soldier.

And then Subaru experiences arguably the worst fate out of any of the soldiers by getting possessed, boiled alive, and only then put out of his misery by a cut to the throat.
