Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure SAO is one of the few anime I dropped.
Not sure where I was going with that, but the abridged series is better.

Anyone want to talk with me about re zero? Most people I know aren't into it, and I'm kinda getting bored.

Re: Zero Volume 6 Ramblings
Tumblr media
Yes, it's been god knows how long since I really focused on reading Re: Zero, and I'm definitely kicking myself over it but life is busy and there's always so much that needs to be read and watched. Anyways.
Tappei's writing really is incredible. A bit of an off topic assertion, I've been reading the Vivy Prototype novels and going from the first (written by Tappei) to the second (written by Eji Umehara), and now coming to read Re: Zero Vol. 6, there's just something about his writing that you gravitate to. Something that sucks you in and keeps you reading more and more of it. You could argue it's the requirement of a good writer to be able to engage their readers, but there's more to it than just being good. It almost feels like it comes from a natural place rather than something that's learned, an innate ability to execute. Sort of like when people pick up on really small details in something that the original creator didn't exactly intend for. Intentional or not, it's something that appears to readers.
I guess to cut a long story short, you see that sort of questionable intent in a lot of what Tappei writes. How far did he think ahead? How much did he intend to mean by these words? And it makes for incredibly impressive writing, where within even the same volume, you're questioning the significance of moments and thinking back to half a dozen that have already occurred.
One thing that this leads to, at least personally, is talking about my favorite moments of the volumes. I start with thinking, "oh, I really loved Subaru and Rem's conversation in the current loop that ends the volume", and then I realize that a lot of it is based on Subaru's previous loop, his interactions with Petelgeuse, of his sense of heroism, his previous interactions with Rem, so on and so forth until you reach the prior "big" moment between the pair. It just leads you down such a long path to be able to explain why Subaru and Rem's conversation is so good, and that when Subaru thinks he has an understanding and advantage over Rem it amounts to nothing, not only because of how he views himself, but how he views others.
Tappei casts such a wide net that dredges pieces up from the abyss of information that is these novels to formulate moments like this, and it's impossible to really explain that succinctly. You can't really explain how the ending of the previous volume pertains to this conversation, or how even simple throwaway details manage to influence it. You can't really explain how important it is for Subaru to be beaten physically, emotionally, and mentally so that these moments can show the triumph of human spirit, of hope and goodness that even Subaru will refuse to see in himself.
It's something that sits among that list of material in the back of my head, where I well and truly feel that when I try to explain its significance or value I end up tarnishing it or selling it short. Emotions aren't exactly something that are easy to explain, but they are plain to feel, and I guess that's all I can really say at the end of all this rambling.
Re: Zero is something far easier to feel than explain.
