Wildflower Season

Aided by nice weather, fall color is still going strong in the park and so are the crowds! Expect congestion at popular areas like Paradise and at Tipsoo Lake on the east side of the park. This coming weekend is also the last weekend before many park roads, like Stevens Canyon Road (pictured), close for the season. Plan ahead, come earlier or later in the day to avoid crowds, and have a backup plan if parking is full at your destination. Please help protect the meadows by always staying on trail!

The Tipsoo House,

That's all we called it.

I don't even remember the full address

But I could find it.

It was a large house

With a second story balcony,

Down a steep gravel drive,

Below the playground.

The coldest house I've ever lived,

Despite there being five kids

And large parties thrown by our parents

Every weekend.

The party house.

All hardwood, a kitchen island,

A formal dining and sitting room.

But the echoes.

The echoes.

I was normally alone,

The other kids had friends, sports,

Things to do,

Our parents drunk somewhere in town.

And I would play the piano

In the sitting room.

The only good thing about

An empty house

With an echo.

Perhaps due to the particularly dry weather this summer, subalpine meadows are moving quickly past peak bloom. Look for scattered pockets of dense wildflowers such as along the Naches Peak Trail at Tipsoo Lake on the east side of the park or along the Deadhorse Creek Trail at Paradise.

In these popular areas it is more important than ever to stay on trail! It doesn’t take many steps to trample the wildflowers you are coming to see. Many trails offer great opportunities for that perfect  mountain + wildflower photo. Where are you finding wildflowers?
