I am starting to understand why people in old books are like "Between the hours of 10 and 12 I attend to answering of letters and am not to be disturbed." Because I always get so anxious responding to messages and emails for some reason and then I put it off and put it off and I don't want to do that anymore. So maybe having a set schedule with which I respond to all non-timesensitive messages at once will relieve some of the anxiousness.

Good news, the time-sensitive thing has passed! And now I will share some modern-ish queer headcanons I have about the characters.

Mr Collins is the kind of person who will go up to a queer couple and ask them who is the man in the relationship and who is the woman. He does this once in front of Lizzie and Darcy. Lizzie immediately butts in and says that she’s the man, and Darcy concurs, saying how much he loves being his husband’s wife. Mr Collins does not know how to react to this and so he stops asking that question. Lizzie and Darcy are over the moon about it.

Darcy is asexual and demiromantic. His only two crushes have been on Bingley, a crush he is glad mellowed into platonic love, and Lizzie.

Lizzie is demisexual and some flavor of genderqueer, but she’s cool with being called a woman so she just leaves it as that in public. Darcy discovered she likes being called his husband over his wife, so when they’re around friends, he’s always calling her his husband.

Charlotte Lucas is aroace. Mr Collins does not know this. This makes him insecure about their relationship, so every once in a while he writes to Lizzie to ask her if she thinks Charlotte would love him more if he was a woman, because talking to Charlotte about it would be way too awkward for him. Charlotte, having listened to his sermons every Sunday, knows he wouldn’t react well and so she doesn’t tell him.

Mr Collins is just generally confused. He had sex with another man once and prayed for forgiveness right afterwards. He is cishet but keeps feeling like there must be something… more about him, because Charlotte doesn’t desire him carnally, and he wants to figure out what.

Lady Catherine is bisexual but very homophobic. She assumes that every woman wants to fuck other women and that it is a choice to marry men. She passes these views onto her daughter, who would realize she is sapphic if she ever left the house. (Her daughter does eventually realize that she’s sapphic after Kitty.)

Jane Bennet loves golden retriever guys.When she marries Bingley, she immediately realizes that he’s sexually attracted to men. She isn’t sure if he knows this, so she asks Darcy if Bingley knows the average straight man doesn’t want to fuck other men. When Darcy tells her no, he genuinely doesn’t know, she falls a little bit more in love with Bingley.

Jane would be interested in polyamory or an open relationship if Bingley wanted. She’s waiting for him to bring it up.

Georgiana Darcy is transfem and sapphic. Darcy loves his sister deeply and seeks to protect her from those who would hurt her. After Wickham tries to get her to run away with him, Darcy’s fears increase, but he doesn’t know how to explain any of it to her, which causes some friction between the two of them. Georgiana and Lizzie work together to make Darcy less anxious so that he stops isolating his sister from people her age.

Mrs Bennet is actively homophobic and transphobic. When Darcy starts falling for Lizzie, he freaks out because he doesn’t know if she’s transphobic like her mother, and he needs her to know that a) he loves her and b) he will choose his sister over her if he has to make a choice.

Mary is nonbinary and aroace, but is yet to figure any of it out. They just assume that they will feel more comfortable in their body later (they won’t) and they think that falling in love is a choice.

Mr Bennet is gay. He only realizes this after he realizes how much he hates his wife. He represses this for the rest of his life and worries that his kids will make the same mistake he did.

Wickham is bi, which means he dates women and cheats on them with men he finds on Grindr. This does not stop when he marries Lydia, but unlike all his other exes, she doesn’t notice. Multiple people, including some of his former hookups, have tried to tell her about it, but she doesn’t listen to them because she believes Wickham when he tells her she’s the only person he has eyes for.

Kitty is also bi. She assumes that women liking women is normal until all the straight women around her tell her that they don’t ever think about kissing other women.

The Gardiners try to be the best allies they can be for their queer niblings and Georgiana. They become the epitome of the “he confused but he got the spirit” meme.

Pride and Prejudice queer headcanons: if you remind me I have them I will talk about them at great length and even forget that there are time-sensitive things I need to do because I would rather explain why I HC Georgiana Darcy as trans and how that explains and impacts Darcy’s behavior around the Bennets.
