Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982)

My rating: 3/10

Rarely have I seen a protagonist so utterly witless, gutless, gormless, and a long list of other adjectives ending in -less and pertaining to his complete lack of qualities one might want in a leading man, up to and including pointless. I mean, shit. This guy makes the Time Chasers dude look like fucking Ash Williams.

Every year the fact that those kids in the time riders books are based in the 9/11 time bubble gets funnier

Melissa Chase should have died at sea in 1912.

Milo Murphy should have died on a train in 2017.

Zack Underwood should have died in a fire in 2035.

Yet moments before death, someone mysteriously appeared and said, 'Take my hand . . .' But Melissa, Milo and Zack aren't rescued. They are recruited by an agency that no one knows exists, with only one purpose - to fix broken history. Because time travel is here, and there are those who would go back in time and change the past. That's why the TimeRiders exist: to protect us. To stop time travel from destroying the world . . .

so in case you haven’t read TimeRiders- three people are recruited from moments before their deaths (deaths where it wouldn’t be surprising that their bodies aren’t found) to work for an agency that stops time travel from destroying the world. so, timeriders does have an overarching plot, and a pretty major plot twist about the origins of the main characters- I’m not doing the twist. What I’ve said about the trio’s origins is absolutely true. I’m also not doing the same plot as the series. Tbh I’m just kinda taking the concept and doing my own thing. Time travel shenanigans. Angst. You know the drill 

The main trio’s designs! Milo looks basically the same and Zack has some minor tweaks, but obviously Melissa has a big change:

And I just like drawing wet hair, it’s fun, so here’s poor Melissa absolutely sodden, probably having just been taken to the agency headquarters.

anyway it’s such a funny thing! most of the time i’m fine then my mind suddenly goes— she suddenly cocked her head, reached a hand out and touched his face. you’re crying, liam. she smiles sadly. thank you for not being afraid of me. he felt the warmth of tears on his cheeks. ‘why would i? i loved you, too.’ 

and next thing i know, i’m sobbing. :)

timeriders fandom dead as shit but i have Thoughts

We need justice for Kaydee-Lee and the Socialist London library girl from City of Shadows!

(Are they the same person, I wonder? Unlikely, what with the ideological divide discouraging migration. Although maybe Kaydee-Lee's family was originally from Britain and they never emigrated in the Ripper timeline... )

Cooper used you, Kaydee-Lee! Not Liam! He lied to you, dammit! Liam has done no wrong!

And I know it's not what they do, but Liam and the Timeriders should've saved the library girl. She was so scared :( (and rightly so, cos it seems the atomic war happened pretty soon after his and Maddy's visit)

Also, what the hell did Faith do after killing Jack the Ripper? She should still have been out in London hunting for the Timeriders a month later, but we never hear from her again in that timeline.

OK! There's a book series that I'm trying to remember, which I read in the mid-2010. It was aimed at younger teenagers rather than being YA. The main characters were schoolkids in the US, who were recruited by a dying old man to operate as a cell of counterterrorist time-travelers. They operated out of a bunker in New York, which was fixed as a loop over September 11th 2001 so that if anyone found the bunker they would get distracted by 9/11 happening (there might be a different explanation. but it was something like that).

It was fairly dark; time travel badly affected the kids' bodies, and all bar one of them ended up dead. The last one surviving goes back in time to recruit the group in the first place; he's been so badly affected by regular time travel that they think he's an old man even though he's 13 or so.

EDIT: It was TimeRiders, by Alex Scarrow. I just googled "teenage time travel story with 9/11" and the wikipedia page for the books was the first result. It turns out that's really, really specific.

did anyone else read Timeriders as a kid? the main characters were these children who were lifted from history to live in new york in a time loop where every day was 9/11

Sonntag

Nach dem Ausschlafen geht es nach Mitte zum Checkpoint Charlie. Dort in der Nähe haben wir für 11 Uhr eine digitale Tour mit TimeRide durch das Berlin im Jahr 1985 gebucht.

Leider kommt weder die Grafik, noch die begleitende Story unseren Erwartungen nahe. Grobe Pixel, Polygonglitches, fehlende Schatten, steife Personen und unnatürlich düstere Atmosphäre, dazu typische Schwindelgefühle durch VR führen dazu, dass man nicht traurig ist, wenn es vorbei ist. Dazu kommt die Auswahl von 3 kommentierenden Charakteren, die scheinbar nichts positives im Alltag der DDR mehr erinnern.

Frische Luft und ein paar Gehminuten entfernt befindet sich der Martin Gropiusbau, wo wir zu 12 Uhr einen Tisch für den Jüdischen Sonntagsbrunch reserviert haben. Viele exotische Gerichte und sehr zu empfehlen.

Anschließend haben wir einige Kunstinstallationen und Filme im Obergeschoss angeschaut. Ab 14 Uhr wurdeim Haus noch Live-Musik aufgelegt.

Ein spontaner Spaziergang nach Westen führt uns zur Gedenkstätte "Topografie des Terrors", die wir beide noch nicht besucht hatten. Auch hier verbringen wir knapp 2 Stunden mit den interessanten Historischen Zeugnissen der Nazizeit am Originalschauplatz.

Auf dem Weg zum Gendarmenmarkt kommen wir am RAUSCH Schokoladenhaus vorbei und genießen eine heiße Schokolade in stilvollen Ambiente.

Das Highlight des Tages zum Schluss: Im Konzerthaus spielt die klassische Philharmonie Bonn ein Program namens "Jupiter-Sinfonie" bestehend aus eben dieser von Mozart ergänzt um die Ouvertüre des Sommernachtstraums von Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy und Rokokovariationen von Tschaikowsky mit dem Star-Cellisten Friedrich Thiele.

Beschwingt von dem Tag laufen wir die knapp 5 Kilometer zurück durch die Berliner Nacht.

Hey so I've been a Monkees fan for most of my life, but I've never delved much into Mike's solo stuff. Recommendations for where to start? Personal faves? Thanks!

I'm a typical start from the start bitch so if...I'm right he started first national band stuff first then second national band then did solo stuff

I feel like watching some music videos is a good start cause he has great ones!

I was gonna recommend one but really the whole first national band trilogy release between 1970-71 slaps so you've got magnetic south, loose salute, and Nevada fighter

Second national band I have not listened to as much 👀

My fave albums from solo are infinite rider on the big dogma (figures lol) and pretty much your standard ranch stash. Infinite is a bit more rock and most of his stuff is more typically country. I haven't listened to from a radio engine to the photon wing and tropical campfires as much tbh

And he released rays in 2005 which was inspired by vaporware??? I believe and it's absolutely wild hahah pls listen to Boomcar it's the best song

He did a bunch of like...write a book with accompanying soundtrack thing which I admittedly haven't checked out lmao so that's the garden, the prison, the ocean

And he did a soundtrack for a movie called timerider in the 80s and it..sure is a movie soundtrack all right and also his first album was technically The Wichita Train Whistle Sings which was him organising an orchestra to play Monkees songs

The way time travel works in the TimeRiders universe, the safest way to do it involves fully submerging yourself in a vat of water. This avoids accidentally taking the floor with you when you travel, and also avoids contaminating that time period with modern stuff

this is unfortunate for Melissa, who nearly drowned in a sinking ship approximately a week before her first go at time travelling
