I adore time travel AUs to bits and yours sounds very interesting! So L's realisation about his monstrosity is a slow descent, but how self aware is he once Light is no longer a child? Does he act on his intentions the moment he realises they exist with no remorse and the shame comes in later? Or does the shame stem from the fact he knows how f*cked up everything he's done is and still doesn't care, not really, not enough to stop?

And speaking about his relationship with Light. He "ingratiates" himself to this new version of him, but does he ever have to stop himself from throwing his unresolved frustrations towards the Old Light at the child? I imagine so, especially at first. He barely restrain himself from being the petty creature he is and at times maybe even doesn't and takes out on Light is subtle ways that can't be traced back to him.

Still, I think L would eventually start to miss the old, antagonistic Light. Adoration and peace are all well and good, but he'd received those before and responded with boredom, nonchalance or neutrality at best. Despite the supernatural task he was given, would L stir the pot to make Light the beast from his nightmare again simply because he misses his teeth? Or could Light develop into it even with all of his influnce?

God, if Light were to find out L is responsible for his family's murder...

Oh no, L has always known he's a monster! He's never denied it! :D He already knows that he's not the moral paragon that the Wammy Kids and the world sees him as—the descent here, the realization, comes from him knowing he's a monster, but subconsciously thinking that he's a smaller one than Light. Light killed him after all, so he'd definitely be the worst monster, right? Wrong :3 L realizes that what he's doing is worse than anything Light ever did on a moral level, but on their level? The game level? Light killed him. Light killed Watari. L only killed Light's family, he hasn't killed Light himself, so he hasn't technically sunk to Light's level in his mind.

It's only later, when Light is fully ingratiated to him, that L starts to recognize that what he's done....might be worse after all. Not that it causes him much moral distress tbh—it's just a fact he's uncomfortable facing because now he feels like he might've fucked up the game. He's got what he truly wants though, and he wouldn't really regret it either.

As for if L takes out his anger on Light: no. For multiple reasons. The first of which is that by the time he sees Light in person again it's been literal years since he first came back to the past, which has watered down his fury to sorrowful annoyance and only heightened his obsession. The second of which is that L knows he can't do anything like that to Light while he's grooming endearing himself to him; Light is smart and newly traumatized and wary, if L started hurting him (even indirectly), Light would notice and immediately clock him as a threat. Which is literally exactly what L wants to avoid.

Besides, by that time L is happy to see him ^^ A little Kira is very interesting indeed, and L has missed his perfect match more than expected to. He's still gonna psychologically fuck him up though. Them's the breaks.

As for whether L would miss the "Old" Light....yes and no. He doesn't really see the "Old" Light and the "Newer" Light as separate people; both of them are still Light, almost in his entirety. Old Light had a Death Note, and Baby Light hasn't yet reached his threshold of apathy :3 That's all. Little Light is still a manipulative genius, full of ego and spite—he just has some trauma now that has led him to circulate all of his turbulent emotions around the people he finds interesting, instead of just shoving them down and pretending they don't exist until they really don't :) Little Light is not bored of the world yet. He's not bored of emotions and love, and now he'll never find them tedious, because L ripped that away from him by killing his family :) He'll always be petty and arrogant and vicious, but now he's more open emotionally than he would've been otherwise.

Speaking of Light's family! L never gets caught out for that! Because one of the first big things L does to endear himself to Light is help Light catch the arsonist that caused the fire—by planting evidence and false trails to lead Light right to the patsy he set up to take the fall for it ^^

From there, once revenge has been had, Light's family kind of,,,,fades from his mind. L has made himself a very big figure in Light's life, essentially replacing his family as the person Light is most frightened to lose and most willing to listen to, and every reminder of the Yagami family gets erased so that L can more effectively do that. Light is only six when he first comes to Wammy's after all; memories fade quick when you're that small :') So if he found out later, as an adult, it would've been long enough that he wouldn't really care.

This whole AU is essentially just. A yandere Light being raised to be exactly that by an equally if not more so yandere L.

So. When Light is once again in the form L remembers him in (seventeen year old body with a wicked wicked mind that makes even death gods wary) I very much think he'd make a move. By that point Light has been in love with him for years, so as soon as L feels any sort of reciprocation they'd get together faster than you could blink. No hesitation.

...Save for maybe A trying to stall him.

For anyone else who is gonna struggle surviving the next 3 weeks with the angsty and tense situation of Callowmoore here's a few things from the last 2 episodes that I feel were underrated and will assist in trying to keep me sane/emotionally stable: - Matching messed up hands built for holding - Fearne nervously playing with her hair as she approaches Ashton - Ashton wanted Fearne to be either the last thing they saw if they died or the first thing they saw when they succeeded - Fearne's admittance corroborates Ashley's 4SD revelation that Fearne is in love with someone in the party but doesn't know how to process the emotions - Fearne wanted Ashton to be happy, while Ashton wanted to feel whole so they would be worthy of the Hells - Ashton twice tried to lead a search for Fearne, and instantly clocking onto Chetney saying he followed Fearne - Fearne making herself look as radiant as possible before giving Ashton the cold shoulder - Ashton only rose to Chetney's provocations until he said 'You hurt Fearne' Use how you will

In... hmmmmm one episode, The Hand? maybe? where Honeydew and Xephos head into an ancient technological ruin (implied to be a giant death robot of some ilk), they find a whole bunch of "evil" honeydew clones that have degraded to mindless violence (implied they're non-sapient, lacking the mental capacity to go beyond base instinct because of how long they've been down there multiplying ad nauseam, each clone generation worsening with nobody to maintain the mechanisms), and tonnes of broken vats. However, one single cloning vat is still working - and there's a guy inside! That guy is fully buttoned up labcoat LividCoffee, with, for some reason, green hair. It's neat :D and fascinating. Lore wise. Extremely fascinating.

I went looking for proof - it's not The Hand (that's the "finale" lol); it's Doppelgängers - for some reason those episodes merged together in my head.

I also appear to be remembering him being alive completely wrong - for a uh, given value of 'alive'. given he's a zombie! and there's two of him. Whoops? I can't actually see good TM (hi, blind here) but people kept saying their hair was green back in the day and i absorbed that information. if it's wrong, I refuse to agree with reality! green haired lalna my beloved.

Also, again, my brain clearly likes to lie flagrantly to me, because while the honeydew clones are made by broken old machinery, that's because honeydew and xephos were fucking around again <3 idiots. I wonder what happens when you stand in the goddamn cloning vat and flick the lever.... buddies..... c'mon.

Anyway - there's two zombie (green haired! I'm not delusional!) Lalna's, which is even more fascinating than my shoddy memory allowed the situation to be, because that implies YogLabs devolved to making clones of clones at some point - along with giant death robots, but they were already doing that - after the Honeydew clone had to replace his original body because Testificate Betrayal Incident, even though Xephos knows with certainty that that's been worsening the quality of the cloning process due to.... well, all the failed Honeydew clones. and the Honeydew graveyard. That he makes Honeydew clones dig up. No he's not gone mental with grief what are you talking about.

Ahem. Judging by the state of SOI!Honeydew's clones, i think it's a mix of SOI!Honeydew being a pretty late-on clone-of-a-clone himself (remember, in Yogs canon all respawns are because of YogLabs, so in SOI for them to respawn - since they can respawn, I should say - they have to be clones.... though the time loop makes me question the metaphysics of it all; do they need vats in the present if the future is the past? Existential. Too existential for me. I like to think they do have vats in the present, in the bowels of what remains of YogLabs, deep in the heart of the desert (imo, it's the source of the desert, given that one YogLabs episode where, surprise surprise, Xephos had his team invent a thing that did the sand-ening process you see in SOI; in SOI, sand is like this organism that eats everything it touches, turning it into more sand, which works with YL lore because, hey, that's what the thing they made did! Tangent. Sorry).) and the machines being super borked. Amnesiac 1st gen clone Xephos* (original Xephos is currently running around as Israphel, imo - protag Xephos is a clone of an earlier, more stable version of the man who did a lil' rebellion <3 because orig!Xeph went. Um. Megalomaniacal) obviously wouldn't know any better than to flick the lever, lol. Just noting all that as I think it corroborates the ideas about YogLabs and cloning the canon gave me. (though i clearly need to rewatch the canon, given all my minor inaccuracies add up pretty heavily towards bad meta, and I hate making bad meta :( I love meta! I have an creative writing degree!!! I don't wanna make bad meta!!!!!!!)

Anyway: Green Haired Lalna! The reason it's so fascinating to see our zombie boy duo is that this is his first and only appearance(s) in SOI; we never meet an alive Lalnable Hector or Lalna LividCoffee. This implies a lot; there's no Lal alive because all his anchor clones are dead, perhaps. Or his clones are the characters Duncan Jones portrayed, made unrecognisable by time, the time-loop amnesia, and mechanical mishaps with the cloning process so they look a lil' different - it could explain why everyone in SOI is.... Like That. (Everyone in SOI acts like a faulty clone(-of-a-clone-of-a-clone-etc); a little not all there, in some respects, and extreme caricatures of themselves besides). There's a bunch of options! All of them pretty valid, 'cause of how fast and loose YogsMC plays with its own continuity, as an improv semi-scripted series with.... plenty of unfinished storylines. More for me to mess with! As a writer i appreciate the sandbox. As an audience member I shake my fist at the sky in great torment! /joke. Am a bit miffed still, though. Over a decade later (jeez. youch. augh. I was 11, holy shit....).

I think I'll have to change what I said in the tags of the Lalnable post, though, because i was working off of bad memory for that opinion.

I still think FB!Lalnable Hector is a direct clone of anchor lalna, but i'm no longer certain either of the lalnas we see in SOI are original lalna - rather, also direct clones of anchor lalna used to created manpower for the operation of the giant death robot; why hire a 12 man crew when you can clone one from the same man at 2x speed? And as we can see in YL 2nd gen (clone-of-clone) clones aren't unstable enough for this to be a bad idea; Honeydew post-replacement may have less.... wherewithal... but he's not entirely incapacitated by clone degeneration - current YL!Honeydew may be a poor imitation friend for Xephos, but he could still pilot a death robot! So I think I'm going with: whatever war YogLabs was fighting in to warrant the death robots (we know Xephos is spending a lot of YL prepping for war with various foreign nations, so this isn't an unlikely event - in some ways he appears to be actively seeking that outcome, because he's speedrunning self-fulfilling time-loop shenanigans i guess.) got desperate enough they used cloning to bulk up manpower numbers, and in typical YL fashion they borked it by cutting corners on the mechanisms of this fact, by using sub-par machinery and clones-of-clones-of-clones, who can definitely pilot death robots but may not have the sheer brilliance of their original (lalnable hector, in this instance, being a certifiable genius, and his clones are smart, but less-and-less so due to the way YL cloning works) so they fuck up more often and thus the systems in place start failing, and lo and behold you have two zombie Lalnas in cloning vats, how did they zombify?????? How??????? What was in the genetic material sludge they were floating in for [time loop confusing the timeline; no actual idea how long it takes for All That to go down] to do that.

Anyway; now i have thoughts!!! So many of them. Thank you for the ask or I'd have gone on with my goldfish sieve memory assumptions about SOI/YL/Lalna and been worse off for it. Also, I just like canon accuracy. Being able to fuck with canon and take it to its logical extremes is what i find fun, personally. Canon complicit, i heard it called - I like that one. Not compliant. That implies bowing under pressure. No no. I'm in on the evil scheme entirely willingly. Enthusiastically, even!

Anyway: Yeah. Green Haired Lalnable Hectors / LividCoffee(s) my beloveds. I do wish one of them had been alive, because I love SOI's silly little grandfather paradox (Xephos = Israphel, and all it's horrible no good brain melting implications) interpretation, and if one of them had been alive then you could infer a second grandfather paradox - lalnable hector's clone is his original existance; wait, what? - because fucking with whatever 'original' timeline absolutely screwed and destabilized this one. And it didn't even work! Xephos, you never cease to amaze me in the many ways you can fail spectacularly at things. Pathetic main character that never wins long-term <3 Doomed by the very narrative he created! Glorious.

... this was a Lalna ask. Lol. Sorry! I never get to talk about yogsmc. I have so many thoughts.

Anyway: that's basically it, I think? Lalnas in vats; do with this what you will! Fascinating stuff, truly.

Time Travel (L) is exactly what it sounds like! L gets yeeted back in time after his death and ends up back in his early Wammy's era. He then proceeds to do some of the evilest shit imaginable because he needs to stop Kira from emerging :3 Light eventually becomes a Wammy kid is all I shall reveal on that front, but that should tell you...a lot lmao.

"You won't interfere further than this?" L questions the being still lurking between the folds of his brain. "Am I your only hope to take down Kira? A human child to your...whatever you are?"

He can feel Cinis bristle in offence, but L doesn't much care whether this thing likes him or not. If it needs him to wrangle Kira for it, then L doubts that Cinis is able to affect the physical world as much as it feels like it is. He has a feeling the creature is blustering—to a certain extent, anyway. L can feel the power rolling off of it, feels it seeping through his mind and chilling through his bone marrow; but it needs him to do its dirty work.

There are different types of strength. Different types of power. What may be godlike in one world may not translate over well to the next.

He does manage to figure out how to have greater control eventually, yes! It makes the areas where he was wounded constantly have that grey haze though, so while he no longer has to worry about his wounds like that, the haze makes him look kindaaaa spooky. (Makes his green skin look washed out, but his red stripes go vividly red.)

He does have that dark want of not wanting to be alone, not again, but 1) he wouldn’t know how to trap someone even if he wanted to (he doesn’t consider it while everyone is alive) and 2) he loves his family more than existence itself, he would never force them into hell just to be with him. (But god if he’s not tempted (so, so tempted) the older they all get.)

exhibit 1: Mori from BSD; knowing what he knows about all of it i guess but especially dazai would make it so interesting. make one of those fics where people fill in the space canon leaves around dazai meeting mori but redo it now that mori has the clear advantage. Soukoku is the main focus and the main characters but Mori knows the future yk

exhibit 2: done before and done well but Light from death note; this asshole realizes how silly it all was to an extent, half falls in love with L during some AU twist on their earliest face off, and death notes everyone in the plot except L, his dad, the Kira squad and maybe Misa (bc personally I don’t like anyone after ep. 9 or 10). bonus points for a collaborative relationship between ryuk and light as well as light having some extra skill— like shinigami eyes or not needing a face

exhibit 3: tom riddle/voldemort; this would be right after his death, he’s been to the afterlife and had his talk with dumbledore, he’s like “shit harry was a horcrux oh fuck my b” and against dd’s wishes gets on the next train outta there and ends up somewhere after book 1 (not before that’s weird).

TO CLARIFY: this is all dark.. dead dove do not eat type shit. i’m not telling you to read or write “mori gets more power over preteen suicide risk” and “magic hitler gets a redo; now with a huge age gap!” as saturday afternoon fluff. act accordingly

Time-travel arcs, especially time-looping arcs, give you a lot of opportunities to save work by copy-pasting panels you’ve already drawn when that sequence of events repeats.

…and I could’ve done that with half the panels here, too! But I wanted Future Thorn’s journey to feel like it all flowed smoothly together. So all the references to his past appearances got redrawn.
