Pre-Petrification: 

You met Stanley and Xeno in your elementary school, you three got along well and started being inseparable. 

You three grew up together, always being with each other and being present in each other’s achievements.

Whenever Xeno competed in contests, you and Stanley were there to support him. Whenever Stanley had a game, you and Xeno would be there to cheer on him. Whenever you had any performances, contests, or whatever you did, Stanley and Xeno would be there to support and cheer on you. 

Fast forward to your teenage years when you realised that you fell in love with not just one, but both of your best friends. 

Having the two just balanced each other out, it was impossible to not fall for them both.

Stanley and Xeno realised their feelings for you and each other after you attempted to date another person in order to get over them. 

That relationship made the two jealous, feeling as though your new partner stole you from them. They had more time alone together and fell for each other as well, but you were still the missing one in the equation.

When your partner ended up being a douchebag, they finally decided to confess their love for you at the same time, also confessing to each other. 

You three became a throuple since then. 

You three all reached your dream careers together, with Stanley becoming a Marine commander, Xeno a NASA Scientist, you a Biologist.

You and Xeno would comfort each other whenever Stanley gets deployed on dangerous missions. 

You and Stanley would often plan dates for the three of you whenever Xeno got too busy in his projects.

One day, you noticed a few symptoms, but decided to ignore them because you thought it was nothing serious. 

It wasn’t until you passed out and Xeno checked on you to realise that something was wrong.

They went with you to the doctor, and when you found out that you had cancer, it was as if your whole world crashed. 

Stanley and Xeno were no better, Stanley asked to be exempted from deployment for a while. Xeno then began doing extensive research to help you. 

It got to the point where you were confined and basically lived in the hospital.

Stanley and Xeno were always there with you, giving you words of security. 

You knew how much this hurts for the both of them, seeing you losing your life to your illness.

The day of the DARPA expo, both of them were called into work, leaving you alone at the hospital. 

You noticed a green light from your window, and the next thing you realised was you couldn't move. You thought you died then and there, mentally saying sorry and goodbye to the two loves of your life before your consciousness faded.

Meanwhile at the expo, when Stanley saw the green light, he immediately ordered everyone to get low and to not let their minds fade. 

During the 3,700 years, the two men thought about you a lot, how you were, where you are, or if they’ll ever see you and the other ever again. 

“Xeno…Y/N, I hope you both are alright…” Stanley thought as he busied his mind to not fade. He doesn’t know how long it's been, nor how long until he will be free again. Ever since the green light, he’s been thinking of ways to potentially get freed from his paralysis. His mind would sometimes wander to you, his last memory of you was when he and Xeno visited a day before the expo. You were getting weaker, he didn’t know how long you had left. If only he knew that that day could potentially be the last time he saw you, he would have stayed for longer. 

“7, 8, 9, 10. Y/N, Stan… I’ll find a way to get out of here and save you both. Y/N, even if it’s been over centuries, if there’s a chance of you still being alive, I’ll do all I can to cure you.” Xeno thought as he counted the seconds. That’s all he did, count to keep track of time and think of how he could survive in what will be a new era when he gets out. He’s recalling every piece of information he’s even known, forcing himself to never forget any. With all of the research wiped out, the knowledge will only live in his mind until he can write them down again. He’s keen on remembering the research for your cure, that could be his last hope.

Post-Petrification:

When Xeno woke up from his petrification, he immediately did things to ensure his survival as he waited for the other people to get freed. 

When Stanley and the others woke up, they immediately built a base and gathered all the resources to survive, slowly building up the American colony. 

It took years for them to go from the stone tools to the upgrades that would help them live more comfortably. 

Each hunt for food and resources, Stanley would scour the statues, hoping to maybe find yours. 

One night, Stanley asked Xeno how they’ll go about finding your statue, or if your statue is even intact. 

That was one of the few times Stanley got vulnerable, the last time was when your cancer got worse. 

Xeno then pulled out a map of all the possible locations, taking into consideration where you were, how many years it's been, how the topography changed, and all of that.

It was at times like this when Stanley was glad to have Xeno’s scary intelligence.

When they successfully made vehicles and aircrafts, they sent out the squad to go look for you which was led by Stanley, they took a few weeks to retrieve you. 

“Alright, this is location no.10. Let’s go.” Stanley commanded, each of his people looked at each statue closely, looking for you. Stanley himself meticulously looked around for you, it was hard to remain calm when he was so desperate to find you. He was anxious, didn’t know what state he’d find you in, or if you could be revived.  “Commander! Take a look!” one of them shouted, alerting him. He rushed towards her and looked down at the hole. His eyes widened when he realised it really was you. “Y/N… we finally found you.” He spoke. 

He dug the dirt more to reveal that your statue was in pieces. His heart sank at the realisation that you can’t wake up on your own, that you were gone for good. He still decided to gather all pieces of you, in case Xeno would be able to magically heal you. He was silent the whole ride back to the base, his crew has never seen him this depressed. They knew him as a resilient commander who was afraid of almost nothing. When he got back, he brought your statue directly to Xeno.

“I’m back, I found Y/N.” Stanley stated, entering the lab. “Welcome back, how are they-” Xeno stopped as he saw the way Stanley looked, it was a negative look. “Their statue is in pieces… I… how will they revive…” Stanley sat, emotions pooling, tears threatening to leave his eyes. “I…” for once, Xeno was at a loss for words. His mind couldn’t think straight.  He expected this outcome, but a part of him hoped that a miracle could have happened and kept your stone body safe. Xeno went to hug Stanley as they sobbed together for the loss of their lover. They decided to keep your statue somewhere safe, arranged and put you back into your form. This was their last way of having something to remember you by. When days get tough, they’d visit your statue and just talk as if you were really still there.

When Senku and the Kingdom of Science fought against the American colony and kidnapped Xeno, Stanley was furious. He already lost you, he couldn’t afford to lose Xeno as well. 

The whole chase happened, and in order to defeat Stanley, they had to petrify the whole globe again. 

After the 7 years of Petrification, Suika was able to revive Senku who in turn revived the others and Xeno, forming a truce with him. 

When Senku told Xeno about the healing properties of the revival fluid, as well as how they revived a lot of the statues that Tsukasa smashed, Xeno was amazed. 

He realised that you had another chance at life. 

“Hello, sorry for the intrusion. Yuzuriha, correct?” Xeno walked into Yuzuriha’s tent where she was making cloth. “Oh, Xeno. Can I help you with anything?” Yuzuriha answered. “Yes, actually. Senku told me that you were able to piece back together smashed statues and were able to revive them, is that correct?” Xeno asked, eyeing the woman. “Oh, yes. I spent a lot of time glueing pieces back together before. Why is that?” She asked, curious as to where this is going. “I have a job for you, if you wouldn’t mind. Follow me.” Xeno said, leading the way with Yuzuriha following after. 

He brought her to where you were kept. He was glad to find out that nothing much changed in the 7 years that passed. “Oh, a broken statue?” Yuzuriha asked, kneeling down to inspect the pieces. They weren't as bad as the ones broken by Tsukasa, yours was much easier. “Yes, they were someone very special to both Stan and I.” Xeno answered, looking at your stone face. 

Yuzuriha looked back at Xeno and saw the soft gaze he held. “So, you want me to put them back together and get Senku to revive them?” She asked. “Just put back together for now. I think Stanley would like to be here when they get revived.” Xeno answered. “Ok, you can count on me, Xeno!” Yuzuriha cheered, running to get her supplies. It took her no less than 2 hours to get you all pieced back together. 

Xeno felt alone, despite having everyone around him, the two people he cherished were still in stone. He could revive you, but he’d want Stanley to witness it as well, he knew how much pain Stanley kept when he thought you were unrevivable. So he waited for an opportunity, maybe in the soon future, to negotiate Stanley’s revival and then yours. 

When the astronaut selection happened, they decided to revive Stanley. Bringing the idea to Xeno, his eyes widened and he turned around, not wanting the others to see his emotional state. “If we’re reviving Stanley, may I ask for another one to get revived?” Xeno asked after the agreement, to which Senku agreed after learning that it wasn’t someone harmful and it was someone who could be useful. 

When Stanley got revived, his only thought was that it was an important mission, and he was assigned to pilot the manned rocket. When that was set, he and Xeno were left alone. “Stan… let’s go see Y/N’s statue.” Xeno said, to which Stanley immediately agreed to. Part of him hoped that he’d see you in the flesh, but he was also scared to hope. When they got there, Stanley was surprised to see that your statue was intact and dressed, the lines the only evidence of the shatter. “That petrification device is one of a kind, you know. Its mysterious science is quite elegant. Who knew that the reason for humanity’s collapse can also be the cure we’ve looked for.” Xeno said, looking at you. 

“Wait… you mean…?” Stanley stuttered, eyes wide looking at Xeno. “See for yourself.” Xeno said, handing him a bottle which the other assumed to be revival fluid. Stanley slowly uncapped the bottle and poured the liquid over you. Soon enough, your stone cracked and revealed you, alive. “What… where am I… huh?” You spoke as you blinked, eyes getting used to the sudden light. “Y/N… you’re actually alive…” Stanley whispered, afraid that this was an illusion. “Stan…Xeno…” you muttered. Stanley immediately brought you into a hug, his emotions spilling out. He didn’t need to be stoic when it was only you three. 

“The petrification from the medusa has healing properties. Senku shared to me that it was able to revive one of their comrades after you had a run in with them. It also healed the injuries from the war.” Xeno shared, “what? What’s going on…?” you asked. “That’s a story to tell for later, what I’m trying to say is that due to the petrification’s healing properties, the cancer in your body is no more.” Xeno replied, shocking both Stanley and yourself. “Really?!” you exclaimed, getting up to hug Xeno. “I do feel more energised than before. That’s amazing!” You added.

They ended up bringing you to Xeno’s place, filling you in with what you’ve missed for the years you’ve been petrified, and what they’re up to now. You learned that Stanley was revived to be the pilot of the rocket, while that scared you, you had trust in Xeno and Stanley that they will make sure that this mission is successful.

“Everyone, this is Dr. L/N, one of the renowned biologists of the old world.” Xeno introduced you to the crew. “Great! We have a biologist to help out with the agricultural cultivation! I desire all the different kinds of plants!” The guy who’s name you learned was Ryusui shouted. You helped them cultivate crops and helped with the agriculture in the Kingdom. Partnering up with Francios and making the food more nutritious and more easy to obtain. 

It wasn’t a secret that Stanley, Xeno, and you had something going on, but it wasn’t announced either. The others would just see how the other two were so much more different when with you. You were the “light” of the three, making them trust the other two more. With you there, it feels as if the other two were tamer. That however was put to test when someone decided it would be a good idea to flirt with you despite your protest and obvious uncomfort. “Back off from our partner.” Stanley’s commanding voice boomed, “lest you want to become one of the testing dummies in an experiment I’m working on.” Xeno added. making the other person cower in fear, that was when they found out that you three were in fact official. 

When everything was settled and humanity was slowly rising back up and with the legal rules of old age gone, the three of you decided to get married and live as how you’ve wanted to in your old lives. You thought that your life back in the old days would end easily, with you succumbing to your illness and leaving behind your two lovers, but thanks to the phenomenon, you were able to restart and live a new life with the two loves of your life.

Very well-written Hanta-centric fic. I love that top Todoroki is implied since I hardly ever see that with this ship. My only gripe is that they never got to actual penetrative sex even though it was hinted at a few times, but other than that the fic was incredible. In particular, the reactions from other characters about Hanta wearing more “feminine” clothes were really realistic and captured the range of responses other than “boys don’t wear that!!!!!!” His internal conflict was really well-done too— even though he never got the negative response he was always bracing himself for (to the best of my memory), I like that those insecurities that society as a whole gave him were still present. All around amazing fic, highly recommend.

Ah, the fic that got me into Seroroki. My original review: Stayed up until like 5 am reading this, giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. I’m not usually a fan of chatfics, but man. This one was adorable.

Crazy revelation I just had about Soichiro's death. This occurred to me while writing a Beyond Birthday fic, and specifically having to keep in mind that death does not surprise him. Sure, he doesn't know how it'll happen, but he always knows when.

It's glossed over if not outright cut from the anime, but it's addressed in a blink-and-ya-miss-it way in the manga, that Soichiro was planning to commit suicide after the raid to Mello's base (for those who were unaware of that fact, it's because he believes his involvement in the case is putting his family in danger, as evidenced by Sayu being kidnapped). The reason he doesn't is obviously because he dies before then, because he cut his time in half after making the eye deal with Ryuk, and instead dies via gunshot wounds and the explosion. Soichiro's life was not taken by a death note, his lifespan was not completely cut short "before his time". My point is, his timer ran out.

MISA. HAS. THE. EYES.

Whether or not she would have figured out the exact formula for how long each tick is, or if she would have calculated the exact date and time, she would have at least seen that Soichiro didn't have much time left compared to everyone else. And she ABSOLUTELY would have told Light. A shinigami would never tell a human how much time they have left, or their loved ones, but there's no rule saying a human with the eyes can't. Even if she never calculates the exact time, she'd notice how much it's ticking down per day and could gauge about how much longer he'd have left. If you think she wouldn't, I'd like to point out that this is her future father-in-law. She would have made the effort. Even if for no other reason than to tell her long-term lover and boyfriend (whom she has lived with for nearly five years now, is her literal partner-in-crime, mastermind behind the schemes, and friggin Lord Kira himself), that his father is going to die in roughly X amount of time. Misa lost both her parents. She knows that pain. She would absolutely want to spare Light from it. She can't save him from it completely, she can't prevent Soichiro's death, but she can brace him for it.

All that now to say, it makes me wonder. Did Light know he was more-or-less sending his father to his death on that mission to raid Mello's base and get the death note back? What we see in both the anime and manga, it seems to suggest that he didn't know and it took him completely by surprise. But logically... he would have at least had an idea that it would be soon.

Now with that lens, while in the hospital and his dad is literally dying, it makes his internal dialogue about "how would a normal person react to this" make a lot more sense than that he has to pretend to care that his dad is dying. It's much less a matter of, "Light is a psychopath and doesn't care about anything other than his goals". It's now more like "he knew his dad's death was coming and has already come to terms with it". That's why it's not fazing him. I will concede that he didn't know that this would be how, or again, he knew it'd be soon but not today, so there's that aspect to consider (I bring that up to say that I like to think Light didn't put on a performance when he started crying, I wanna believe that was legit and he was grieving). But I'm totally open for friendly, civil discussion here.

I rewatched and reread the scene in question and, from a meta standpoint, I'm sure that Ohba just forgot and didn't consider that Misa would know he'd die. But from a character standpoint, I think it shifts the perspective on the scene and adds some interesting nuance.

Megaman 9 yapping

The story of the 9th Rockman game was short and simple, but the idea behind it was always so peculiar to me. To recap, there is now a 4th law of robotic which gives them expiration date - this encourages scientists to create newer and more efficient model while saving energy and resources from maintaining old and outdated ones. However, it proves to be a problem because the robots in Rockman have "souls" akin to that of a human, which causes them to rebel and bring destruction humanity.

This is a story that touches on ethnics and certain area of philosophy, but particularly, I'm interested in how those elements affects the robots' psychology. In the game, after defeating 8 robot masters, you would get a cutscene showing how Wily manipulated them into joining his side and how he eventually reprogram them to be destructive. However, the robots still wanted to be of use to the humans until the end:

Dr. Wily: "Just because you reached some arbitrary expiration date doesn't mean you should be scrapped! You're all still quite useful! You have a right to live! I'm going to help you. Together we'll show the world how useful you all still can be!" Robot: "Hmm… perhaps you're right. We still want to be of use to people. Can you repair us?"

All in all, their usefulness dictates whether they deserved to live or not. Before I made this post, I thought Dr Wily was going to talk about how they shouldn't be scrapped because they have souls, but after rereading the script, I realized he just reverted back to talking about their usefulness. The robots don't seem to mind at all. It is as if they were programmed to think of way, or at least were conditioned to think that way due to their environment. If I, a human, were to be born along side my peers then before I even reach old age, I was suddenly told "The new is generation is better than you at art, so you need to be executed", then I would most likely lose all of my reasons and start going berserk as well. This is what happened in Hitoshi Ariga's manga: The 4th law get administered as usual, Dr Wily said the same thing, but he didn't reprogram them or manipulate them, he only offered to get rid of their expiration date. In the end, it was up to the robot themselves to decide whether they would revolt or not (and all of them did).

Hitoshi Ariga's interpretation is more believable than it is in the game, but it's hard for me to believe that all 100% of them would turn from obedient robots to war machines just like that. Once again, If I was suddenly told that my life was cut short because someone was better, I would be mad, but that is with the assumption that I am a human. The 9th numbers and robots, even though they have emotion and "souls" similar to that of a human, they are not human; It is similar to comparing the life of a dog and a cat. Of course, we haven't discovered any species that have a level of intelligence and emotional capability similar to human, so it is impossible to tell, but I think there would be a noticeable amount of conflict that comes from being a robot (a species that is meant to die and be improved upon) that has a human mind (a species that wants a fulfilling life).

Assuming there was a robot who wanted to live (as in Hitoshi Ariga's interpretation), but also believe that their life was taken for granted (as in the game version), there would a difficult character arc whether they were mind controlled by Dr Wily or not. Let's say it is Hitoshi Ariga's version where the robots act on their own, this character would follow the other 9th numbers in the revolution to get rid of the 4th law, but I doubt they would contribute that much because they feel indebted to the humans. They are incapable of helping those around them in the revolution, but at the same time they aren't willing to turn themselves in and end their life quickly. This also leads to another problem. Let's say they couldn't care less whether they die or not, but if they are close to the other 9th numbers, it would be a problem if they just gave in because that would mean their friend/sibling could potential die because of their listlessness. If there was a dilemma like that, it's either you lose yourself and join your siblings in exterminating human, or you run away from both the 9th numbers and the human and delay the inevitable.

Rereading Zuma's arc right now, and (SPOILERS FOR DANDADAN MANGA OF COURSE), since I was already up-to-date and following weekly updates then, on my first read I missed in the chaos of events how readily Rokuro jumps into the fight against an unknown terrifying opponent here. He really threw his lot in with these kids lol

One detail that might partially explain the discomfort around Rokuro as an ally is that, unlike Turbo Granny, he is not made harmless. In fact, he actually gets an upgrade, and he can really hold his own on par with main characters now.

(on the other hand though, he was the one to initiate cooperation even without our protagonists beating his ass)

It's interesting to see the different approaches of aliens and ghosts to peace.

In line with ghosts being hyper-emotional traumatized beings, they are impossible to reason with at the peak of their directionless rage. But if the right subjective chord is struck and you appeal / validate / turn around their emotions, they soften up, maybe even grow attached and protective.

Hyper-rational aliens, on the other hand, stick rigidly to their agenda, don't care about appeals to empathy or morals, but fold as soon as the objective equation changes. As soon as a powerful threat arose, Serponians (Rokuro) had no problem ceasing hostilities with their former targets. He was ready to protect these kids with all he had and his life - not out of compassion or remorse, but because it was rational cooperation against their common enemy.

A question after the victory, even after his exile by Serponians, remained - if the equation changed again, would he switch sides again? Would he see it as rational to do so? It certainly doesn't look like you could count on his gratitude, personal attachment or moral code.

And here, I think, we have our answer.

Who else is going to give him a tip about high-paying jobs without ratting out a half-metal man with no neck to authorities or exploiting his confusion. Who in the world could beat the side these kids are on, with their ludicrous loyalty to each other and scientifically improbable concentration of supernatural power. Who in the vast, cold, cutthroat-rational universe will give him the irrational kindness they have displayed, or sincerely offer him something they cannot. Behind the flat comments about part-time jobs lie countless unspoken considerations that lead to one simple conclusion.

In Rokuro's view of the world, the equation has cemented yet again. He is with these kids, now matter where he ends up and against whom.

BONUS: A look at how Turbo Granny displays loyalty in a very contrasting way during the same arc. Loud, rude, you can see she is very emotionally involved and, to her dismay and Fairy-Tale Card's bemusement, attached to her humans:

Yozakura: Kyoichiro uses his True Blooming to save Taiyo; the family forgives Taiyo for hiding his suicide plan from them, but they tease and tickle him as punishment. This is the kind of scene where Yozakura is at its strongest, when the whole family is together, I really missed them

Undead Unluck: We see the very beginning of the Earth and learn that Sun and Luna were once defeated by...something, either other Gods or a previous creation of theirs; the Union all shout out for Fuuko's attention to show how much they love her, charging up The Heart with memories to unleash the Greatest Stroke of Unluck. UU is the Friendship Manga of All Time

Roboco: The city is attacked by a Giant Roboco from Outer Space!...or...Mutated by Radiation!...or Flushed Down the Toilet...?! It occurs to me that Roboco is soon to be the oldest running manga in Jump after One Piece, and no shade, but I don't think I care for that

Sakamoto: Shin learns that he can overclock his brain to slow down his perception of time and defeats Tenkyu; dismayed at the realization that after everything, he still has no qualms with killing, Shin mourns his failure to live as a normal, good person and prepares to finish off Tenkyu, only to be stopped by Sakamoto. Absolutely fascinating breakdown of Shin's character, I'm so much more invested in him now

EluSam: Tokiyuki shares a drink with Sadamune and admits he thinks of him as a father, though this upsets Sadamune specifically because everyone that Tokiyuki calls family has a tendency to die. It seems like a bit of a weird turn to call them a father-son duo, but this was definitely an endearing chapter

Witch Watch: Kokuryo fails to summon Jura in the gacha, but does manage to roll Jeanne Alter; naturally, she immediately turns on him. An odd twist, but damn if Jeanne isn't one of the coolest things in this whole manga to date

Blue Box: Prior to her final match with Yumeka, Chinatsu gets introspective about the gap between her own self-image and how others perceive her, and how that same concept can be applied to others. I've never been super invested in Chinatsu, but if I ever reread or watch the anime, this chapter will surely put her entire character into perspective

Akane: Kiroku founds his new school, taking the name of a Rakugoka abandoned by time; Shiguma embraces the opportunity for a new life, but Issho continues to blame himself for what the three of them lost. Issho's regrets and resentment are likely the reason why Shiguma was the one to inherit their master's name; looking back on the Mass Expulsion, it seems that Issho may have grown to become exactly what he always hated in an attempt to find redemption

Kill Blue: During the closing celebration of the festival, the stage nearly collapses and kills everyone present, but Juzo saves the day with a piece of burnt bread, a bomb and well-placed gunshots; someone from Juzo's past appears. No one heard those gunshots, huh? And are we supposed to know this guy? This just feels like an awkward transition into the next phase

Nue: Nue heals Gakuro before proceeding to sick Moroyoki on him to keep him from pursuing Shiroha; Gakuro wins because of his ability to grow stronger for his friends, and this interference is revealed to have been a test. That's...what the whole thing about Massacre Gear or whatever was about though...I guess having him surpass Moroyoki was good, but this feels like a waste of a chapter where we learn basically nothing; at least the image of the light shining through after Gakuro's shadows dissipate was cool

Kagurabachi: knowing that the Hishaku are definitely going to try to weasel out of their deal with Samura, Chihiro and the Masumi decide to bring Tatiana Samura's secret daughter under their care. Wild prediction - Samura's going to die and she's going to take Tobimune

Chojo: Chojo splits himself into his good and evil side, and his evil side proceeds to manipulate all of the women in his life into doing his work and giving him money. While a funny chapter, the good side had almost no focus or dialogue when I think there were definitely jokes to be derived from him

Astro Royale: a friend from Hibaru's school, Hiyohiko, asks for help saving his sister from one of the Yotsurugi siblings, Shikaba; this turns out to be a fake using his name for clout. Shikaba's got an interesting design, and looks to have a cool power; definitely the character I've liked most so far, but that's honestly not saying a lot

Kiyoshi: Kiyoshi plays ping pong to learn how to control his Precept Power; Nehan and Jack Joe ask Tsurugi for help with their training. Kiyoshi having extremely high output but terrible fuel efficiency is an elegant way to justify the need for him to train, and the ping pong method is pretty fun

Hima-Ten: The class goes on a haunted walk, and naturally Tenichi gets paired with Himari; Himari trips, and when Tenichi tries to catch her, he lands on top of her and accidentally gets kissed. How the hell did you idiots manage that one?

Ichi: the mysterious white-haired monk turns out to be not only a Magik, but the so-called "God Magik," a greater threat than even Uroro. I've been waiting for an antagonist to be introduced, and a "God Magik" seems like a great long-term goal to work towards, though chapter 15 seems a tad early to be introducing them

Shinobi: the Operator tries to use the class camping trip to set up Yodaka and Mukai; on the second haunted walk of the week, the pair get attacked by yet another ninja. I know I said I'd rather they stay friends, but they had a surprising amount of chemistry in this chapter

Hakutaku: Hikuma's dire need to take a horrendous piss nearly ruins Noto's elevator pitch plan, but fortunately he meet-cutes genius game developer Akamine. The brief snippets of Tidio show off the artist's design sense, which unfortunately they haven't really gotten to explore very much with this premise as of yet; if this series gets to continue, I think this would be the best way to find its niche

Syd Craft: Syd and Elio find themselves in the house of a leg-themed serial killer; Elio somehow thwarts the killer by misreading Syd's attempts to protect her as seduction. This is the first chapter that doesn't introduce a new concept or explore anything we didn't already know, so I've realized I'm probably not going to like subsequent chapters as much as the first handful; I have also realized that aside from polyamory, my greatest hope for this series is for Elio to have a trans awakening and start writing BL, forcing Syd to go into a Gay Panic

Ruri: the sports festival begins and all of the side characters establish their own dynamics and rivalries. I won't lie, I don't know a single one of these characters; I attribute that to the hiatus and my own bad memory, but at the very least it was a cute chapter

in the anime the only internal monologue we get is from jearmin, which is a big rewatch tell of oh shit! why are reiner's thoughts private (armored hehe). but the ONE time, ONE time we get reiner's thoughts in this arc in the manga... it's about jean. and it's not like he takes over narration like armin did when he encounters annie alone, or like jean does once these three meet up. it's just one stray 💭 of "jean really... is different."

sure, other characters note jean's maturity since joining the corps, but recognition from reiner stands out here as a vote of confidence from marcel!reiner, AND four years later: when he still describes jean as "an irresponsible jerk who only ever thought of himself," even though reiner knows first hand that jean grew so, so much after trost. and it's his fault.

i previously posted SASAMI's I Was a Window, but another one that screams reijean to me is Till Death by Japanese Breakfast. briefly, it's about marriage, but she wrote a whole book about the context that this song and her relationship come from, which i highly recommend.

i binged the anime so late, just in time for season 4, and when the finale came out i could hardly think of anything other than "we're scouts, we don't know when to quit."

back in my day (i'm turning 27 this month), one dude beating up another in shounen launched a ship, a fleet of ships, and kept it afloat for years, but yams gave us their more obvious, huge interactions in the last... fifteen chapters. but there's so much history between them that screams to be noticed on initial reread and rewatch: the reijearmin (horrendous throuple name) date that was the female titan arc, that jean keeps his cool when the 104th hop on the armored as reibert and ymir try to flee, the whole return to shiganshina, the echo i come back to of "the jean kirchstein i know only thinks of himself."

with jean's OVA, they're the characters whose moms we see the most of besides carla jaeger??? the difference between karina and jean's mother is vast, yet their sons turned out so similar, despite it all. so caring, so haunted by that care. jean takes his leadership in the post-time skip survey corps so seriously, he agonizes over his field leadership in trost, while reiner feels like he killed marcel and bertolt and doomed annie, and in his lowest, lowest moments still manages to protect and worry for falco and gabi.

These are in no particular order because my level of passion for them changes depending on my current hyperfixation, and I’m limiting myself to one character per media but giving honorable mentions because I tend to love two or three characters almost equally

1. Monkey D. Luffy!!! (Honorable mention: Zoro and Sanji)

One Piece holds a special place in my heart. I watched it on 4kids when I was growing up and it was the first anime I watched as a teenager. Luffy is so so so important to me as a character. I got myself through the worst parts of teendom by imagining that if he was real Luffy would love me. He’s such a warm, loving, and joyous character. He’s Joyboy!!! He came into the world without a family and so he made his own and that’s so special, the message that no one in this world is born to be alone and somewhere out there someone or ones will love you and fight for you. And on top of all this he’s an aroace king!!!

2. Mogami Kyoko -Skip Beat!

Kyoko was my Girl Crush™️ in high school. I remember telling my best friend “yeah if I was gay I’d date Kyoko” LMAO. Beyond that there’s just something so special to me about reading this manga over and over, watching this girl—who only knew how to live to make her existence as palatable to other people as possible—grow into herself and find her own passions and loves as she heals from the abuses she’s dealt with her whole life. (Just looking up images of her made me want to reread the whole manga)

3. Peter Parker (Honorable mention: Harry Osborn)

Spider-Man is an OG, a forever love. No matter how many years go by I’ll always circle back around to Spider-Man. I love him and his pain and his Anger Issues™️ and his iron-clad morality. The people’s hero, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He’s also responsible for coding my brain to always gravitate towards the comic relief characters. I love a jokester who quips through dangerous situations.

4. Yosuke Hanamura - Persona 4

So I always joke that a majority of my favorite characters fall into one of two categories. 1. Hides their insecurities behind jokes/false bravado, and 2. Internalized homophobia/in love with best friend. And the characters I go FERAL for have both. Yosuke Hanamura is one of the both. I love a comic relief character!!! I love a man that’s hopelessly in love with his best friend but won’t admit it because he’s terrified of the implications!!! When I played this game for the first time, like most people, I was SO MAD THAT I COULDN’T DATE YOSUKE. 90% of the time when I play I don’t end up dating anyone because I refuse to deny the protag his one true love lmao. Yosuke and Yu also have the bonus of being my first ever gay ship. Their love is so powerful it pierced through my own internalized homophobia lol!!

5. Din Djarin -The Mandalorian (Honorable mention: Luke Skywalker)

I’m out here projecting so much onto this man!!!! He’s autistic, he’s asexual, he’s Traumatized. My other category of favorite characters is “Stoic Dad who learns to love again through a pseudo child figure” so he’s right up that alley. The man responsible for finally getting me into Star Wars after 27 years of having absolutely no interest.

6. Virgil Hawkins!! - Static Shock (Honorable mention: Richie Foley)

The way I waited with baited breath for every Static Shock episode as a child. It’s still one of my favorite shows, I own all 4 seasons on DvD and cherish them. I love Virgil so much!! He taught me about diversity! He’s such a lovable character and it makes the show an absolute delight to watch no matter how dated some parts of it get. The show does such a wonderful job balancing Virgil’s super heroics as Static with the heroics of every day life and it’s so endearing.

7. Oliver -Space Boy (Honorable mention: Amy)

Oliver is definitely the most niche character on this list (which is a crying shame please PLEASE read Space Boy on Webtoon it will chemically change your brain.) I’m just so attached to him. I feel so much for him and his story. If I could give him the biggest hug I would in an instant. “Take away his humanity and you can ignore his pain. Define him as a tool and you can justify using him.”

9. Rex Salazar - Generator Rex

Oh maaaaaan I love this asshole teenager!! I’m soooo obsessed with characters who get dehumanized for the sake of using their abilities like a tool and not a person. Re: the above Space Boy quote. The aesthetic of this show is so cool! (Also hello character who hides their insecurity behind false bravado.)

8. Aang - Avatar the Last Airbender (Honorable mention: Zuko)

Oh Aang… My sweet boy… my beloved… He imparted so much wisdom to me growing up… and also taught me it’s okay to have fun. I’ll always love him so much. There’s so much to rant about Avatar but it would take three hours.

10. Yugi Mutou - Yu-Gi-Oh! (Honorable mention: Atem)

I related to Yugi SO MUCH as a kid. He’s just a little weirdo who loves games and craves friendship more than anything. Honestly Yugi might have been the character I most strongly related to when I was young. I remember feeling swells of happiness when people would say nice things about Yugi as a character because it felt like they were saying nice things about me too.

Young Bad Education (Dayoo): I fell in love with Mizusawa’s eyes on the cover and bought the volume in Japanese years ago without an ounce of idea what the story was about. No regrets. Young Bad Education and its continuation Young Good Boyfriend will feed your soul. You can read it on Manga Planet (Futekiya).

Hitorijime My Hero (Memeco Arii): This title is a classic so you might have already seen it but just in case. Hitorijime My Hero has an anime adaptation as well (I’m anime-only) and the manga has a spin-off with the side couple as far as I know. The height difference is less pronounced here but if you’re like me and you love delinquents as well, this will be your jam.

The Trees in Spring (Nakaoka Naka): I’m kind of cheating but I’ll do anything to recommend this title! MCs here are a teacher and student, but the teacher isn’t teaching the student, they meet each other in a different way. I have reviewed this title before and take any chance I can get to recommend it, so there you go!

Warbler, Sing of Spring (Nago Nayuta): I felt like they don’t have height difference (and checked the first chapter again) but the MCs are always drawn in weird angles so I’m not sure. Another title with the delinquent sprinkled on top. Really enjoyed reading this, Nago Nayuta’s works have a cuteness I like and the uke in Warbler is kind of unhinged xD Love him!

The Neighbor I Desire (Makoto): This one started off a bit weird for me but I can assure you it’s super cute! I have written a review before so if you want more details, here you go.

The Good Teacher (Eeej): Another title I reviewed before. It’s pretty, fun but short and while the plot is not this series’ strongest point, I think it’s worth giving a shot.

Love for Sale (Dal Hyeon-ji): It’s official, you guys. I will literally disintegrate if I don’t recommend Love for Sale, the doctor said it not me. But honestly, do yourself a solid one and read it if you still haven’t. The pinnacle of ultimate goodness. I wrote on LfS before but since the post contaşns spoilers and is more about sugar dating than a review, I’ll spare you the link. On Lezhin.

Love Me Doctor (ANA): Another series I constantly recommended on Twitter and got a couple of unassuming, kind-hesrted people to read it with me as well. Focuses on a university student and a urology doctor he had tovisit for his ED. If you’re comfortable reading a title where a doctor kind of uses his position to get to know a patient and stepping over boundaries, please give it a chance! TOTALLY worth the time. On Lezhin.

On or Off (A1): Can’t say I understood the drama with the artist and the series being wrapped up rather quickly, but I read this popular webtoon with joy! Not as big of a fan as the rest of the BL fans but if youdig these two tropes I think it’s worth checking out. On Tappytoon, but I think TOKYOPOP has released it in print.

Metro (Chika Hongo): This is more of a dramatic title, where a high school student is being touched regularly by the same man on the train and he likes it, until one day he follows him home upon being invited. If you prefer a story that’s laced with trauma and flawed characters, this is for you! On Manga Planet.

Pound Cake on a Sunday (Amida Shizuku): Man this series is SUPER funny that I had to reread today! A father and son lives alone after the mother’s passing and one day, out of the blue, the father starts complimenting the new transfer to the company about how he’s so beautiful or saying how shiny his hair is. Is his father gay? Did he finally lose it? Read and find out! Very different from your usual BL, worth your time!

Bonus - I’m a Dom and I Want You To Stroke My Head (KINACO): Has dom/sub universe (a big fan) height difference as well, but it’s a teacher x teacher pairing.

i like talking about it a lot, to the point i have a special tag for when i mention it on a sideblog. it’s relatively empty because i started the tag not long ago, but when i go through my blog and find all the untagged posts, it’ll get much, much longer, i know this.

as for the plot… like the art it’s inspired by, akito has a dream where he’s dating tsukasa and loses his mind, then proceeds to go through all the stages of grief and finally comes to terms with his crush on tsukasa

that’s just the first chapter. from then onwards i didn’t have any art to base the story on so i just went wild. the next chapters go as follows:

shizuku and tsukasa barely interact in canon and that makes me sad, so i wanted a chapter dedicated to them and threw ena in for good measure. ended up super attached to this trio, to the point i was rereading it again to find typos and forgot i wrote it myself on the way, so i thought “man, this author should write more shizuenakasa!” i am the author. this is the last chapter where they interact.

The supposed fluff chapter where they just hang out. it was getting too mushy and i decided to interrupt them (sorry, akito, tsukasa!), but i couldn’t figure out how. so i thought and thought and thought and came across the perfect interruption: mizuki and saki are now dating. akito has mentioned several times throughout the fic that he considers mizuki his number one enemy. and if they dated saki he’d be forced to interact more, further intensifying the stereotype that every akito fan wishes to see him suffer

something really cute happened with this ship actually! because i saw it around in some cute fanart where mizuki and saki had a double date with honami and kanade, but i didn’t think too much about it, just used it as a tool to move the plot forward, yet, i am a writer, god damn it, so if i’m going to write them, i’ll write them well! god damn it! (again)

so yeah, wrote this rarepair in a fic of a sort-of rarepair, and i got comments saying i got them to ship mizusaki, and some others, when the diner event rolled around, told me excitedly how mizusaki’s finally canon

also i don’t have good matching cards for them, i didn’t pull on the diner gacha. (it hated me in jpseka so i didn’t bother with enseka. also i was saving for pandemonium so i was kinda broke lol)

also fun fact that i had been waiting to share with someone because it’s a very specific thing! i don’t remember why exactly i had heisei pistol show on the mind (as if i don’t have parun constantly on the mind) and i was thinking about mizusaki and i was like HOOOOOOLD OOOOOOOOON- ISN’T MIZUSAKI HEART’S SURNAME??????????? and so the last chapter’s title is a heisei pistol show reference just because i can

the next chapter is because (i assume) in the first chapter an and akito beefed for a bit, and kohane was super in favour of akikasa (even though akito wanted her to absolutely NOT be), so people asked me a lot about an and/or kohane reacting to akikasa actually being together (they started dating officially on chapter 3) so it’s a double date between an, kohane, akito and tsukasa which is really funny because my opinion on an/hane has gone downhill as time passed but i’m happy with how i portrayed them here. mostly because the interactions focus more on an<->akito and kohane<->tsukasa lmao 😭

if the third chapter was the fluff chapter, the fifth chapter is the funny chapter. It’s mostly shizuku, airi, mizuki, saki, tsukasa and akito playing truth or dare. Not much more to that, though a lot of people liked the end with mizuki writing a letter to tsukasa. That makes me happy

the sixth chapter is the longest chapter to date and I actually don’t like spoiling what it is about but…

the reason why it was a dream, when it was originally written as the finale of the fic was because… i couldn’t be bothered to do wedding research. i asked my cousin, who got married (relatively) recently and she told me “i honestly don’t remember how wedding prep went”, so i asked her husband and he replied “nope, don’t remember either” they are couple goals and i adore them, so i took this as a sign. mid-writing process i went to a wedding myself but then i got ideas for another unrelated fic i’m writing.

also because i got an idea mid-writing, because that’s what ALWAYS HAPPENS. i go “this is the last chapter I SWEAR” and then i get an idea and this isn’t the last chapter at all

then I decided to add foreshadowing that it was a dream, like it lacking mizuki making an akikasa mv to bad boy by cascada (nightcore) because akito doesn’t know mizuki’s planning it >:)

I assume this will somewhat be addressed in the podcast for Watanagashi, but I've been reading it with a friend(reread in my case), and the first 2 chapters have just been... really bad and pervy? I love the rest of this series, but god this has been a lot, and I know this is not the end of it. How do you deal with it, and address it to new readers?

Yeah...

It is a bit of an ever-present dilemma in Higurashi, unfortunately (and while it improves over time in When They Cry as a whole, it's unfortunately a bit of an issue in a lot of Ryukishi's work). I do think the chapters in and of themselves are very good, to be clear, but those types of jokes do tend to drag it down massively whenever they (however briefly) rear their ugly head. As it pertains to generally recommending the work, I'll get to that in a moment, but first and foremost I think it's just good to know the limits of your friends, if that's the sort of reading situation you're in. For me, and the people I know - we all definitely hate the unnecessary sexual humor, but we all also grew up on a lot of anime and manga, back in the late 90's and early 2000's, which had far less restraint about these things than it should have. Obviously it wasn't good, but while we dislike it, we tend to roll our eyes and muscle past if at all possible. Thankfully, in Higurashi's case, while it is often extremely obnoxious, it is easily ignored in the context of the story at large. That's us, though, and everybody's comfort level for ignoring that sort of thing is different. When it comes to general recommendations, there's just no escaping the huge asterisks you're going to have to attach to the work at large. Like many things I love with less than stellar aspects (problematic stereotypes in One Piece, similarly gross humor in Danganronpa, etc.) there's not often a way to soften the blow of these things for people who wouldn't have been able to power through regardless, and that's completely understandable. (And even if it's less problematic, obviously, Higurashi still has a lot of elements that are difficult to casually stomach regardless, so it does sort of inherently narrow the pool of people you can get into it, lol.) This doesn't really make up for it, obviously, but this is almost doubtlessly a product of the game's release timeline and where it was released, as well. This was a self-published game in the very, very early aughts being marketed to primarily otaku at Comiket. Galge was still very prominent, and while it has thankfully managed to grow beyond the need of being strictly pornographic (and thank god Higurashi never went that far), the kind of sketchy, ecchi variety of shit did unfortunately sell and draw more eyes to a game back then. Given how small 07th Expansion was (they only sold 2 copies of Onikakushi at the time, I believe), I wouldn't doubt they felt the need to shove things like this in to push units. (In a sense, I do think some of the tropes are there to be intentionally subverted. While most people know Higurashi has horror now, they didn't then, so in some respects Ryukishi was ripping the rug out from under people who just thought they were here for a dating sim, but attributing that to every instance of weird shit in Higurashi would obviously be oversimplifying the issue.) TL;DR: Higurashi is definitely a product of its time in many respects, and while I think it is a fantastic story that surpasses its occasional failings with gross sexual humor, that is an unfortunate mark of the time and circles it was made in. It may have been a play to help it sell, or to throw off galge genre readers, or both, but either way it still kinda sucks a lot. That is always unavoidably going to be a huge asterisk when recommending it to anyone in the current day.

TW Sexual Assault & Inappropriate Age Gaps/Pedophilia

The Amount of times Sexual Assault is not only portrayed (and done by characters we're meant to like mind you) but played for laughs is ... Absurd. Especially done by a 10-year old who is supposed to be the love interest. The infamous panty scene that is played as a gag for like 20 more chapters after. Natsume looking into Mikan's neckline. Him lifting up her skirt. Him touching her chest. And not just him but Narumi too? Using pheromones on children and "joking" about kissing a 10-year old boy is not funny. And let's not forget about Tono. He's 18 and while at least Tsubasa is trying to keep him from Mikan, it's again played as a joke how he's such a womanizer towards any female regardless of age.

Age. Right. The age gaps are a number on their own. I talked about Narumi and Tono but it does not stop there. I mean most relationships are innocent enough, heck I'll forgive the kids having crushes on their teachers cuz as long as it isnt reciprocated that's pretty normal I guess. But it doesn't stop there. Mikan's parents are a pretty obvious choice but the way my jaw dropped when I learned Nobara ends up with Segio just ... It gives me flashbacks to Rin and Sesshomaru. And it's a lot more than just age. The power imbalance makes it worse.

Please don't think I'm trying to shame anyone who likes it or to cancel it!!!

This manga started around 22 and ended 11 years ago, what good would outrage do now? And heck I myself still am a bit attached to it because of nostalgia but it's kinda shocking to revisit something so dear to me and just ... Be utterly disturbed by such themes being treated as normal or jokes.

I'm a little relieved we nowadays view these things a bit stricter because fiction absolutely does affect reality. I myself because of such manga actually viewed it as perfectly normal to have a friend of mine (14) date someone who is 23. It's a bit sad to know Japan only recently (just around 10 years ago) made possession of CP illegal and while I don't wanna generalize it seems to have a big problem with pedophilia as a whole. And no, I don't think the author is one, I just assume she wrote what she knew.
