"Timawa" were free people in ancient Filipino society, different from nobles and slaves. They did not serve as slaves but also had no royal status. They could own land, join battles, and live independently. Timawa had more freedom than slaves but still had to serve the ruling class sometimes.
Tumblr media
"Ladino" were Filipinos during Spanish rule who could speak both Spanish and their native language. They acted as translators and writers, helping Filipinos and Spaniards communicate. Many Ladinos wrote early Filipino literature and spread knowledge. They were important in history because they helped preserve Filipino culture while learning Spanish ways.
Tumblr media
"Traditional clothing" refers to the special clothes worn by people in the past or during cultural events. In the Philippines, examples include the Barong Tagalog for men and the Baro't Saya for women. These outfits show Filipino identity, history, and traditions, often worn at weddings, festivals, and formal gatherings.
Tumblr media
"Oral tradition" is the way stories, history, and knowledge are passed from one generation to another by speaking instead of writing. It includes folktales, myths, songs, and proverbs. Many cultures use oral tradition to teach lessons, share beliefs, and keep their history alive before written records existed.
Tumblr media
"Democracy" is a system of government where people have the power to choose their leaders through voting. In a democracy, everyone has rights and can express their opinions. Leaders are responsible for listening to the people. This system promotes fairness, freedom, and equality in decision-making for a country or community.

"Those who can draw can draw whatever they want" (pt 1)
Me: "So I can draw whatever want? Ohohoho!" (evil cackling)
...
(draws a samurai having a meal with a Visayan timawa while chatting BECAUSE YES!)
Tumblr media
(So the samurai's name is 'Takamine no Kyouhei' and the Visayan's name is Bayani. They're canonically friends in my chronicle—it's the year 1520 when Bayani, one of Lapu-Lapu's men, helps Kyouhei get back to the Okinawan islands after Kyouhei was accidentally drugged and sent off to the Mactan island.
They're also my ancestors. I'm not sure if I would actually be related to a real life samurai from the past, but 'Takamine' is my great grandmother's last name (Takamine Tomiko), and it means noble or high peak. Plus this is also a way for her to be remembered because I really miss her and it's my fictional story so I can imagine whatever I want.)

Messing around with an idea for a different outfit. Maybe something Pepper will wear in the future. I originally gave this one the title of "datu" but realized that it might not be very appropriate because those titles are usually given to the nobility in the Philippines. So I decided instead to change it to "timawa," which is more in line with what Pepper does, being a warrior.

My friend asked me to draw them on their wedding day (bc I drew Chintan and Jamil).
Some oc ranting for my own comfort.. Their names are Lihay and Panganoron. In my wip, there is a dominion called Sasaban.. and its in danger of occupation by its neighbor (called Janalila, which is a rajahnate and extremely powerful.). Sasaban's population is mostly coded Muslim.. and it is a sultanate- Panganoron is the heir, their crown prince under a regent, and he is mostly shunned by his people. Mainly because he follows a different religion from his state religion (like imagine if the sultan of Brunei's son was a Buddhist.) . And Panganoron is seen as "weak".. he is very gentle, soft-spoken, academia inclined rather than cunning and war-like as the rest of his predecessors. (His father followed the state religion, his mother was indigenous). Panganoron is keen on proving himself worthy of being sultan, but he had a tendency of being distracted by socioeconomics rather than warding off forces and marching off into the battlefronts- Panganoron built soup kitchens and schools rather than amassing armies, and he is staunchly anti war and anti caste systems- but because of the looming occupation, Panganoron has no real power or resources to challenge the harmful pre-existing hierarchies in Sasaban. Anyways. Panganoron was offered a way out of war with the neighboring country of Janalila, if he married a princess from a different dominion- a theocracy called Kalantiaw, the oldest and the most noble dominion in their world; The princess' name was Maitreyi. If he married her, not even Janalila would dare make enemies of Sasaban and Kalantiaw both.
Panganoron was game, but since all the borders and ports were tightly guarded, Panganoron would have to make his way to Kalantiaw in disguise, with a skeleton crew, and through old , forgotten passageways, and roads that are called "witherways", magical, and only existing within certain, precisely calculated timeframes, of which only certain groups of indigenous people could do.
Lihay is. Well. He is an "uripon"- the lowest of the low in their social classes- indentured to servitude for the rest of his life, very sick from working in the mines.. in my world building, primordial dragons were so large, their hollowed out bones were mined for thousands and thousands of years for coal that burned for decades, so hot it could cremate a cadaver in minutes- working in such mines was very dangerous- guaranteed anyone who spent more than a couple of hours in it would suffer a tamer version of radiation poisoning- but many miners become disfigured, with their skin melting and rotting. Sasaban deals with this by only making lepers and the lowliest uripon mine- Lihay had lived all his life in the dragon-mines, but he was also indigenous- and he knew his way around the witherways.. so.
Lihay is very shy. He is trans, autistic and mute, and he has an enormous crush on Panganoron; Lihay agrees to be their guide, in exchange for his freedom from the mines, freedom from being an uripon, to a maharlika (freeman, I borrowed it from tagalog for my worldbuilding. In the real world, Timawa would be more appropriate)..
Either way. Lihay and Panganoron, traveling together with Panganoron's small entourage, fall in love, which is Very Bad for Panganoron, when the fate of his kingdom rely on him marrying Maitreyi of Kalantiaw- and Very Very Bad when the person he falls in love with is someone like Lihay.
Btw, Panganoron's name means "the clouds that gather at the mountaintop" in Tagalog. (And Bicol), while Lihay's name (Dalihayang) is from a made up language, and it means "twenty four.). But later, Panganoron gives him the name "Hininwon", which means "cherished one" ! ! :')
Ps ps.
Panganoron's eyes are supposed to look like wayang kulit akdksk

Finally, another character poster for my upcoming comic, "Ang Timbangan sa Daragangan" (The Scale of A Hero). I was inspired by Barangay Sixteenth Century Philippine Culture and Society, the batik patterns for the backgrounds and his attire, and most of all, a webinar Beyond Filipiniana Season 3 from Karakoa Productions. His name is BAKHAW, meaning 'mangrove' in Bisayan language. He is a Timawa (warrior vassal and freeman), and an expert in playing Lantuy or Tolali. He likes to wear the ceremonial clothing known as Lihin-Lihin and to put Antuwanga (Hibiscus) on his hair.
FACTS:
According to the context provided in Barangay Sixteenth Century Philippine Culture and Society by a historian William Henry Scott, the Lantuy is considered one of the quieter instruments. It was traditionally played indoors during nighttime and was meant to imitate the mournful sound of a human voice through shakes and trills. This style of playing was deemed appropriate for wakes and funerals.
Banig is a traditional handwoven mat from the Philippines that is typically used as a sleeping mat or a floor mat. The weaving technique used to create the diamond pattern is known as "Amakan."
PS: I'll give more details about my upcoming artworks, comic series, and Pre-colonial Visayas. Stay tuned for more updates!

thoughts many thoughts
i just visited a 600-year old tree (balite tree) in my country and i felt a tad bit overwhelmed,, bc spanish colonization in the philippines happened around 1500s but the balite tree was planted from around 1400s, meaning this tree witnessed all our colonizations and even the time before that
so it made me think,,,, what if spain (the first one) never colonized the philippines and fucked up our culture and lifestyle, what would we be now?
would we still stay with the baybayin writing system? probably
like japan, we'd probably also be an economically wealthy country independently because of our spices
we'd also be independently wealthy because of our diverse geographical locations
would these make us a 1st world country right now?
would the country be polytheistic instead of roman catholic because of filipino deities? would we all be indigenous? prob not because of modernization
or like america, there'd be immigrants and a lot of diversity in religion
growing up in a very religious surrounding is very something so what if there was just no: christianity
would we have a caste system still??? because of the old one which composed of datu, maharlika, timawa, alipin?? or will it also change?
would we be a 2nd world country instead?
so much history wouldn't happen. a lot of heroes, heck even a lot of presidencies, wouldn't probably exist. our national anthem would be different. our FLAG would be different. EVEN THE PHILIPPINES WOULDN'T BE CALLED THE PHILIPPINES. BECAUSE IT WAS NAMED AFTER KING PHILLIP OF SPAIN.
jose rizal, person i look up to, wouldn't exist. we wouldn't study noli me tangere / touch me not in school
i wonder what kind of education system we would even have... i wonder if it would've been so much better? my dream university wouldn't exist which is the oldest existing university in asia right now, so it wouldn't be university of santo tomas anymore
like china, would we just have a fucked up history of fighting and having wars against each other debating on what kinda social system and government we would have?
would we have high ass technology or reputation or even POPULATION as east asian countries?
or would we still remain as a 3rd world country somehow?
how the fuck would we even have acted during world war 1 and 2? be part of it in a big way? or just be chilling? would we......... be colonizing other countries?
...
and already have good weapons? would japan and america come and even still colonize us? lmao that's a whole nother conversation
history would change as hell, and we would be pure filipinos without any blood of our colonizers, meaning our physiology would change, as well as our names (damn)
i wouldn't have a name
most importantly: i wouldn't exist. nice.
.
.
.
there are probably a lot of articles thinking of "what if spain never colonized the philippines?"
will research abt them later lol

"Those who can draw can draw whatever they want" (pt 2)
Me: "So I can draw whatever want? Ohohoho!" (evil cackling)
...
(draws a picnic scenery of a samurai and a Visayan timawa happily chatting while an Aztec ocelotl who's cutting an avocado, watches their ninja friend try a tomato FOR THE FIRST TIME AND LOVES IT SO MUCH THAT HE SWEARS HE COULD D E V O U R A THOUSAND OF IT BECAUSE I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS QUARTET!!)
Tumblr media
(These four are my ultimate quartet because in my fictional universe, THEY ARE CANONICALLY ALL FRIENDS! The samurai's name is 'Takamine no Kyouhei', the Visayan man's name is Bayani, the ninja's name is 'Sabikaze no Yugen', and the Aztec's name is Cuahuitl. Yugen and Cuahuitl, and Bayani and Kyouhei are canonically friends when they were alive, but in the after life, Bayani and Cuahuitl became good friends. Yugen and Kyouhei already knew each other when they were alive, they were colleagues who served the same lord.)
(Anyway so they're my four main characters of their respective story in my chronicle, but since they're dead, they're definitely mutual friends now! WHICH IS BEAUTIFUL! NOBODY IS GOING TO STOP THIS BIZARRE DYNAMIC FROM HAPPENING! MWAHAHA)
(PS: Yugen brought that deer head to the picnic from a wild card hunting, even though Japanese were supposed to be vegetarian in his era. )
