Hansel and Gretel, sketch by Tim Burton
Tumblr media
Hansel and Gretel is a television special that was made in 1983 for The Disney Channel. It only aired once on October 31, 1983, at 10:30 P.M. The only other times it was shown was as part of the Tim Burton retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Do you have any ideas for an interpretation of Hansel and Gretel?
I don’t currently have one fleshed out as much as I’d like, still looking for a good angle I feel would work well for a hypothetical feature film/my DisneyVerse. Disney has of course done a few different version of Hansel and Gretel already as shorts, such as the aptly terrifying live action one done by Tim Burton in 1983 which can be viewed here. A Mickey and Minnie short from the early 2000s here, and the original 1932 Silly Symphony called “Babes in the Wood”. I couldn't find a link with the original music sorry :( But it doesnt have any spoken dialog so just turn the sound off if you like. The og is also supposed to be available on Disney+ but as much as I love Disney I try to spite the Company when I can ;)
Anyway, I like to base my stuff off of og Disney properties when I can so I actually tried some updated designs from Babes in the Wood a while back:
(Don't mind Red I was trying an updated design for her too)

But there was already so many little blonde girls in blue dresses running around, what with Alice and Little Red Riding Hood (as seen above) and now with my version of Goldielocks, I decided to try out new designs based on the covers of old Disney records
Tumblr media
So yeah still feeling out a proper hypothetical retelling, but I hope you enjoy this little offering of doodles and videos!
I'd still like to take inspo from Babes in the Wood for my version but it would definitely be with more stand out character designs and a less frivolous plot.
Edit:
Just realizing they keep taking my links off. Let me try something else:

Victor Abdalov (CA. 1950-)
Russian-born photographer who served as the cinematographer on Tim Burton’s first two films, VINCENT and HANSEL AND GRETEL. Born Viktor Abdalov in Turkmenistan, Abdalov immigrated to the United States in early 1976, some months after his marriage to former International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) student Catherine Cosman in July 1975. (Many sources incorrectly list former human rights activist Catherine A. Fitzpatrick as Abdalov’s wife. However, her ex-husband is the former political prisoner Alexander Shatravka.) Prior to immigrating, Abdalov was arrested along with Soviet dissident and Gulag survivor Alexander Ogorodnikov in July 1973 while shooting a film about young Russian Christians titled “Jesus People”. Although his camera was seized by the authorities, Abdalov managed to hide the exposed film, which eventually reached the United States by way of the US embassy. Abdalov and Ogorodnikov were subsequently interrogated by the KGB, and Ogorodnikov (and very likely Abdalov, although this is uncertain) was dismissed from the VGIK, the famed Russian film school. Three years after his immigration to the United States, Abdalov was hired as cameraman on the straight-to-video feature “I Go Pogo” (1980). (In 1989, Walt Disney Home Video reissued the film on VHS as “Pogo For President”.) Abdalov met STEPHEN CHIODO during the making of “I Go Pogo”, which led to Abdalov being hired as the Director of Photography (DP) on “Vincent”. Abdalov also served as DP on Burton’s next project, “Hansel and Gretel”. In 1989, an exhibition featuring over one hundred of his photographs of life in Russia opened in Washington, DC.
