i see you | i will always protect you | ln x she.

Pairing: lando x she. Summary: lando's girlfriend has had enough of the disrespect of a few mclaren members and decides to make it known. Word Count: 2.1k Warning: hurt? angst? idk this is very self serving?
they had locked her in his fucking drivers room. it had been hard to stomach watching the race, she had been at the edge of her seat the entire time but as the penalty landed she had lost it. lando deserved a penalty, she wouldn't argue with the fact despite knowing him so well she knew that there was no way that he wouldn't have lifted if he had seen the flag but a 10 second stop and go? her head set had been off and she had been moving before sense had really hit her. all season long she had stood by and let it happen, she had been with him as much as she could, wrapped herself around him in hopes it would shield him from the world that had proven to be so cruel to the boy they had once loved but this? it was enough.
" zak! andrea! you can't make him fucking serve that are you joking! he needs to fucking pass max and drive, absord the repercussions!" she called as she flew from the garage, mechanics trying and failing to grab at her as she made her way through the pit and to the wall her arms flailing and she didn't care what cameras caught her. she was done. " why is will calling him in! why are you not defending him!" stella heard her, but as usual her calls landed on deaf ears and with a flick on his hand he had turned back to the screens in front of him and she had felt an arm wrap around her, jons probably given no one else would have been brave enough to get close and she had been lured into lando drivers room despite her fights where she was now locked.
it was un-fucking-believable, not a single person on that pit wall had been ready to fight and with every fibre of her being she was ready to fight them all. each interview that surfaced on her phone only served to make her angrier, each time she caught sight of his face, the weight of what had happened piling on his shoulders more and more visible with each question thrown his way and the final straw? andrea's shitty fucking comments that lando should have known when a yellow was called. he had been arguing with will over pace when he had flashed and not a single person had told him about it till it was too late. the team were as much at fault as he was and the penalty was unprecedented and uncalled for.
she knew that it was lando the second the door clicked and everything in her wanted to comfort him but she had another thought on her mind. "baby... " lando frowned as she brushed passed him, confusion pulling at his brows making a picture of his already weary expression. he had been confused when she wasn't in the garage waiting for him and now his confusion had only doubled. he moved quickly after the initial shock had worn off, following his girl on the clear war path she was on.
his jaw only dropped slightly as he watched her rip open the door to where andrea and zak were currently deep in some post debrief conversation and he braced himself for the impact that was about to come. his girl was pissed and not a single person in hospitality seemed ready to stop her.
"how dare you!" she spat before zak could stop her with a well intention raise of his hands but she was already in front of andrea with a fire lit in her chest. " i'll repeat since you're looking at me with a stupid expression on your face. how, fucking, dare you. i know you have been at this team a little less time than the rest of us and so you seem to have missed something, but that man right there has bled for you from the second he stepped foot into the mtc. he has made tea, he's learnt to fix the fucking cars, he has turned down offers from every other fucking team that could have put a race winning car under him so much sooner and you give him what in return?"
" baby ... " lando warned softly behind her, as much as his chest was bursting with love for her , he didn't want her banned from races all together if she took it too far but the gentle touch of her elbow was shrugged off as she continued on.
" no lando someone needs to say it because i'm sick of it, every single weekend. not once did you congratulate lando on his pole this weekend, every single time you have to pick you pick oscar and for what? what does supporting both of your drivers do? why is that so hard for you? lando bleeds papaya through and through, he rips himself apart for this team and you left him alone to suffer after brazil, let him piece himself back together and the millionth time that he needs you to defend him this season you leave him to the wolves! what else does he have to give to this team to earn the respect he deserves from you? how can you not see that you're breaking him every time you treat him like he's nothing? he has been nothing but loyal to this team and to you, everything you ask of him he delivers and you just disrepect him constantly. you don't fucking deserve him andrea, you don't deserve to celebrate him or love him just when he wins for you when you won't defend him when he needs it!" tears streamed down her face that she barely registered as she rounded on zak who was stood staring at her with his own, admittedly ashamed expression.
" and you, you're no better. you claim to love him like a son and that you're proud of him but you're the ceo, you have the rank to pull should you need to and you constantly choose to pick the image of family over actually taking care of a boy who has been with you since he was seventeen, put some fucking respect on his name or you best believe that i will drag his ass to another team before i let him sign himself away to any more time being treated like he's nothing more than mclarens whipping post to i make myself clear?" she huffed as hands reached to wipe at her tears.
everyone paused as they waited to see whether or not she was done, tears formed in landos own eyes, guilt in zaks, praise filled jons, shame in wills. every single person in here knew that she was right, she could feel it, she just also knew it was unlikely to change much. " and you . " turning her eyes landed on her driver, her sweet, self deprecating , race worn driver. " i won't hear another word about you being sorry, no one told you it was a yellow, not your dash, not your engineer, no one, oscar got told. every one else got told but you didn't and i won't hear another word about you letting your team down, not tonight do you hear me? " she scalded with the last of the fight that was left in her , watching as misty green eyes took her in before he offered her a small nod. " now as the only person in this room that seems to give a flying fuck about the well-being of the one person that has given everything to this team im going to take lando for however long i want and you can debrief when he's ready you got that?"
moving closer to lando she reached out, her fingers linking with his she pulled him out of the room before anyone else could protest, taking the shortest route possible she knew to get him back to the safety of his drivers room. " they're never going to let me back here again god." she breathed as they closed the door, for the first time in what felt like hours taking a large breath as lando took her in. his hands moved to cup her face, thumbs wiping over the remaining tears that marred her cheeks. " i love you so much , more than any of this you know that right? " he whispered as he let his forehead drop to hers. never had anyone defended him the way that she did. " i'll defend you to the ends of this earth lando norris. i'm sorry i shouldn't have don . " she found herself cut off as landos lips captured hers gently before he pulled her into his arms, his chin resting on her head as he let his eyes close. " we'll deal with it tomorrow. " for now all he wanted to do was sleep away the race and get on their way to the next one. so long as he had her by his side, he could handle whatever they threw at him.
--------------------------
lando had long since lost the battle with sleep on the flight to abu dhabi a few hours later, his head tucked into her lap and snuggled into his hoodie, her fingers running through his hair as she watched him rest. the pair had been quiet as she had packed up his gear with jon and he spent some time online with max, they both knew he needed it and she was happy just to see him crack a few smiles. she knew once he woke again it would really hit him and she would have a whole new job to do.
the longer he could rest now the better, the easier her job would be. feeling eyes on her she lifted them from where her fingers were repeating their gentle motions through freshly washed curls. finding stella watching her she shook her head, she didn't have it in her to fight with him now. she had considered getting them a second jet but lando hadn't wanted to leave oscar with the team after the results.
" i'm glad he has you. " stella commented softly as he dropped his eyes to lando and she felt the need to somehow cover him from view even if he was none the wiser. " it can be hard , i have to be honest with the media and sometimes i am harsher on him because i know what he can deliver. " he continued as if it would explain his choices throughout the season. she didn't care though , not tonight , not when it was lando on the line for all of his honesty.
" if you think treating him that way , talking to him like that , will get the best out of him then you've failed him andrea , he loves you , he loves this team , he needs that in return or you're going to break him. " how he didn't see that she couldn't understand, he wore his heart on his sleeve so plainly even those that didn't know him could see it, so why couldn't he?
" i care about him too you know? " andrea tried again but this time it was zak who coughed, shaking his head at his team principle for a moment, his own eyes landing on the sleeping boy in her lap. it was so easy for them all to see the easy going young man he had grown into, the boy that had grown into his skin but in moments like these he was still the young, shy, self doubting teen that zak had inherited and the reminder they had all gotten today was needed.
" you can't burst out like you did again today , especially not in front of the cameras, it makes everything so much worse, for him you know that right? " zak asked quietly and she nodded, she knew that but she was ready to argue anyway, zak beating her to the punch this time. " but , message received, we will be gentler with him, we know he can be the best, that's why we push, but we will do better to protect him, i promise you that. "
she said nothing as her eyes returned to lando again, her fingers unmoving from his hair before she let her own eyes fall closed. it was weekend to forget that was for sure, but she would do everything in her damn power to make sure neither of them forgot what they had in lando ever again.

mechanic ex-boyfriend simon riley

notes & warnings: the used pictures are only for aesthetic purposes, reader is not physically described in this. AGELESS BLOGS AND MINORS DNI this is an 18+ only blog. a significant age gap between simon & reader is implied but the actual number is never mentioned. if i missed anything please lmk:)
this is a completely unedited little something i wrote at 4am
reader who never fell out of love mechanic ex-boyfriend simon
you still recommend your ex-boyfriend’s garage to your friends (especially any vulnerable women) because despite your failed relationship, you’ve never met someone as trustworthy and reliable as simon
you and mechanic simon who met when you’d found a used car you wanted to purchase and wanted to have it independently inspected
reader who found this older, ruggedly handsome, stoic and yet professional mechanic who seemed to know his shit. despite the terrifying skull design resting next to his shop’s name, you trusted him immediately
not only did he inspect the car for you, but he also helped bring down its price and performed any necessary repairs at a huge discount (he never told you about this, you eventually figured it out on your own)
despite the obvious crush, he was very reluctant to pursue anything with you. not only were you his client and trusted him not to make things weird, but you were also so much younger and he felt like an old dog who was beyond learning any new tricks
you should’ve taken his warning from the beginning as he had predicted the downfall of your relationship before it’d even began
reader whose car has been acting weird for the past couple of months so you begrudgingly take it to simon’s shop
you’d actually tried taking it to some new garage in town, but had a feeling you were being lied to and overcharged when the sleazy mechanic barely spent an hour on it and said it was back like new
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who doesn’t even need 5 minutes to tell you it’s on its last leg. despite his stoic demeanor, he’s actually concerned by how you’ve been driving such a vehicle in such an unsafe state
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who starts asking till he finds a car within your budget. one he inspects himself to make sure his baby not anymore doesn’t end up dead in a ditch somewhere because of faulty brakes
the fucker was ready to buy it himself, but knew you’d never accept his money (especially not after the harsh parting words you’d left each other with during your last fight)
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who’ll never love anyone more than you, but still isn’t willing to repair the broken bond between you two
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who still uses o’keeffe’s working hands cream every day cause you used to always rub it on his hands, swearing his calloused skin would soon feel like a baby’s butt (and of course you were right). he tries to mimic the way you’d gently work it into his damaged skin as the only thing he had left from you now were memories
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who never really tries to move on from you despite his apprentice’s attempts to set him up with multiple people (what’s the point of you for something he’s already found)
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who went through the army and came out even more damaged after a stint in prison. he believes nothing good will come out of such a sweet thing so full of life being chained to a grumpy old man like him
mechanic ex-boyfriend simon who despite thinking all of that can’t accept the thought of you being with someone other than him
WHEW the is the first time i've written in YEARS (and i probably won't write anything for another good 5 years fjkdsw). hope you enjoyed this as much as i did!! this au idea has been rotting my brain for the past few days and i just had to let it out. feel free to dm me, leave a comment or send an ask about this au. dividers made by @anitalenia ✨

Oughhh, imagine good sex relief with tfp optimus
He's deserved be relaxed,,,,,,
Could i request that (with f!reader but optimus's partner is sweetheart and wants him to relaxed <3)
That mech honestly needs it so bad. Hope you enjoy!
Warning: 18+🌶 MINORS DO NOT INTERACT

“I-I have to-”
His voice box hitched at the feeling of your teeth nibbling lightly at the cables lining his neck. Groaning lowly, his hips bucked up, sighing softly with a huff at the gasp leaving your lips. He grits his denta together to keep himself in control yet the feeling of your pussy clenching down on his spike had him rolling his optics back into his helm. The pleasure burned deep in his mechanisms, daring him to turn you over on the bed and rut into you fast like a turbofox till you are dumb and limp.
“Nuh-uh,” you pushed him back down onto the sheets before he could even turn you over, “You need to relax, Opti. You've worked so hard lately for me, for us to keep everybody safe.”
Trembling servos carefully clutched your hips, squeezing here and there the pliant flesh. He stared up at you in quiet awe as the setting sunlight from the window painted your skin, framing you in its gentle glow. Optimus wondered if he was worthy to be under this breathtaking being that stares at him with such care.
“Let me take good care of my sweet mech, yeah? He deserves his award.”
He choked back a whimper at the loss of your warmth yet the praise echoed in his processor, turning it slowly into mush. The question on his glossa dies at the sight of your back turned to him and bent over. A small giggled at the dumbfounded look on his face as you grabbed his spike, giving it a good squeeze before pressing the head in. His servo clutched the sheet tightly, threatening to tear a hole in it while the other carefully guided your hips back down onto him.
“Careful handsome,” you rolled your hips, “don't want to have to explain to Fowler why I need a new bed sheet.”
“Ah, m-my apologies,” Optimus sighed sweetly, “it's just-”
He gasped with a throw of his helm back, almost snarling at the cheeky squeeze of your cunt. The giggles made him melt, it was too much, he feels so sensitive to everything around him. The hot air, the feelings of the sheets. His frame jolts at your gentle touches, gasping in time with your moans and honey-coated sighs each time your hips thrusts downward.
“Bet you like it even more if I just-”
His engine revved hard at your touch against his node, hips bucking up far to where he failed to hear a squeal over the sound of his vents and spark whirring heavily in his audials. He couldn't control himself. He couldn't stop his hips from thrusting up, pedes shuffling into a better position. Optimus couldn't stop his servos from clutching your hips, letting him fuck you deeper.
“Op-Optimus! Ngh!” Your hands cupped his servos, “you- unf, were supposed to relax!”
“Forgive me,” a shot of fire pooled from your veins down to your clit at his breathy, almost borderlining growling tone that sounded in tune with his revving engine.
Cheeky mech! You can hear that smirk in his voice. He wouldn't let you retort as his servo moved from the spot on your hip to carefully yet firmly rubbing your clit in time with his thrusts. You feel that the coil in your stomach began to tighten, threatening to send you over. Your hand slips down to his valve, rubbing his node that caused him to falter in his thrusts.
“C'mon, overload with me? Needed this so bad, yeah? C'm-!”
Optimus helm flies back, his intake dropping in a silent scream. Transfluid flooded your cunt deep and covered your hand. With a soft roll of your hips and tiny smack against his valve. You pant,
“Such a good mech, so good for me.”

may i please request Idia, Azul, Jamil, and Floyd with a s/o that has a really bad sleep schedule, like literally can’t take naps and falls asleep at like 2 am and wakes up at 6 am. So they’re always really clingy and tired because of it
.。*♡ A/N: This is a mood. I started playing Mystic messenger again and like, my sleep schedule is all over the place because I refuse to lose even a single chat 😭. Needlessly to say but I'm sleepy all day but at least I'm getting a good ending for sure lol. Hope you enjoy this, darling!

.。*♡ Idia himself has trouble sleeping. He keep turning around so many time that if you were to share a bed with him, you would woke suddenly. Nightmare, anxiety and fears plague his mind, thus he turns to the only coping mechanism he has: gaming. He plays the night away before meeting you. After that, his heart start to beat normally and he can finally breathe, he can finally rest for a second. And then he finds out you have a worse sleeping schedule than him. You sleep really late and wake up really early.
.。*♡ For once he feels the need to be the responsible one, inviting you to sleepovers just so he can make sure that you will be sleeping at an acceptable time, reducing the time you spend in front of screens or any caffeine. You will be sleeping this night and the after, and the other after that. He'll made sure of it. Plus, having you around is so good and you're always touching him in some form whenever you have a bad night. He like it even though he still flinch and blush whenever this happens.
.。*♡ Though no matter how much he loves to have you cuddling his back or hugging him because you're sleepy and can't take a nap, Idia will have your sleep schedule fixed. There can only be one insomniac in this relationship and it's him.
.。*♡ It's a bit difficult for Jamil, though not impossible, to know you're not getting enough sleep at night. He himself works till the late hours and rise together with the sun. Still there are noticeable signs: you clinging to him, irritability, impulsive thoughts, slurred speech, and then he starts to realize you don't sleep at all some nights, doing whatever you spent time doing. And Jamil scolds you like he would Kalim. He is listing every negative effect on your health, how not sleeping can impact you on the long run, how you should fix it.
.。*♡ He make you some teas to sleep better, he'll even help you meditate so you can clear your mind. Though nothing he try works, so he casually move you into his room so he can keep an eye on you. He takes regular breaks when night starts to fall to see if you're still awake. If you are and he is free, which is rare, Jamil will lay down beside you and hold you tight, hoping that the warmth of his body and his soft humming can make you sleepy. If even this fail, he use the Snake Whisper to make you sleep.
.。*♡ Floyd is something else. He likes to experiment with how long he can stay awake before he succumbs to exhaustion, he does this often, laughing at the side effects the day after - though he also gets pretty moody the days he doesn't sleep. But only he can do this, you are required to sleep and take naps. He'll squeeze you gently on his arms, humming a little song while he pinch and poke at you to make you squeal. It's his way of telling you that he is here for you.
.。*♡ Despite his fickle and quick change of moods, Floyd can be soft sometimes. And when he wants something, he gets something; he'll read for you to sleep or tell all about his day and the things he did, the people he squeezed, the dishes he cooked, at some point, even more when he is holding you closely, rubbing your back and pressing kisses to your neck, Floyd knows you're bound to feel asleep soon.
.。*♡ Azul knows the importance of sleeping well. A well rested mind is capable of analyzing, of observation and various other things he needs to keep his business running. He can see how you struggle, often draping yourself all over him, mumbling slowly and yawning every few seconds. He knows you don't have been sleeping well. The motive he inquiry you about; and he create a sleep schedule for you when he learn it's because you have a bad sleep schedule, altering everything you do every day so you can have a practical schedule that fits your academic life and free time.
.。*♡ While that's more easy said than done, Azul tries to coax you into sleeping in his room under the pretende of watching a movie or two. He is shy like this, don't mind him. He knows what's good for you and he can pamper you and take care of you when you are nearby, tangling you in his arms and blankets.

If I Lead (pt1)
"You have to be fucking kidding me..."
He really thought the whole Isu shit was behind him. The world burned and his job was done. Nearly all of 7 billion people dead, but at least not under an evil Godesses whim as slaves. He was doing as he was told, he was leading the people out of the doom he inflicted upon them and helping them rebuild.
His job with all the Apples and Isu bullshit should be done! So why did his eyes open in the sanctuary of Monteriggioni out of all the fucking places.
"That's what I get for touching that damn shit!"
He should have left it fucking alone, it was perfectly fine where it was! Hidden under rubbles and sand in a half-collapsed cave Desmond ventured in to map out to see if there was any underground water source.
He had found a gorgeous cenote in the depths of the cave with fresh water, which was all fun till he noticed an all too familiar golden sheen at the bottom of it.
He should have turned around and left the place, fuck the Isu's, fuck the apples fuck everything.
"FUCK!"
He kicked the base of one of the statues. His voice echoed in the stone room.
He just had to dive in and get it, didn't he. He was conditioned like a dog. Like a Pavlovian itch, he swam into the depths just to touch it.
"Because why not huh, maybe it can help us, maybe I can learn something from it" He mumbled to himself in a mocking voice "God I am so fucking stupid! I should have left it alone."
He knew nothing good came out of any Isu artifact! He knew it yet he still touched it and now he was here after the all too familiar light show he experienced.
He squatted on his knees, holding his head in his hands. "I am way too old for this"
He raised his head and took a look around. This place did not change at all. Even in his forties, this place was always fresh in Desmond's mind like a second home and nothing had changed at all.
He wiped his face with a palm and shook his head. Alright...He was in Italy now.
He had to figure out how to get back.
Thankfully Shaun and Rebecca could perfectly handle the camp while he was away but he was already a month late from his exploration and now who knows how long it would take for him to get back. Few months with a boat? That is if he could find one.
"Good job Desmond, you fucked up once again" he sighed and got up, hearing his knees crack.
He scratched his beard and looked toward the stairs that led to the main exit. "Let's hope the fires and the rubble didn't block the exit, again"
He did not want to do the parkour thru the caves again. Especially the part where he had to swim in that slimy water.
But this place looked fine, even better than the last he remembered which did surprise him but maybe it was that well built.
He looked at Altaïr's statue, not one crack showed on his whole build. The Master Mentor of all standing proudly as always, he laughed painfully. "Things were weirdly simpler back then huh... You probably would not have failed."
He pursed his lips in a thin line and turned back to the stairs to try the door. His hands found the mechanism easily enough, just as he was wondering if the mechanism inside survived the heat, the door slid open smoothly.
Way too smoothly.
The hair on his arms stood up as Desmond's eyes met with the Monteriggioni villa in the night air. No destruction in sight.
"No..."
He walked through the door as his boots met with the polished tiles underneath. His hands touched the soft fabric of the curtains. He saw the desk in the study littered with papers like someone was going to come back to it come morning.
His head turned to the right to see the codex wall... Some pages already pinned down onto the board, more than half incomplete but on the right track.
Desmond felt the sweat drip down his back, he breathed in harshly.
"What the fuck..."
He really should not have touched that devil's orb.
—-------
Once the reality actually sank in, he could not have run out of the villa faster.
He opened the window closest to him (the glass was still intact) and hopped out to the courtyard (the healthy grass under his boots squished) and booked it. He ran into the woods (there were trees!) till his breath ran out then he ran some more.
This had to be a joke, no matter what, he had to be seeing a vision or something. Maybe his bleeding hit him hard this time and he was hallucinating this whole thing... He had to be.
Desmond slowed down to stop at the forest once he came to the hill edge. He choked a shocked sob.
There in all its glory, the village of Monteriggioni stood in front of him. All the buildings standing up with no rubble nor the damage of the flare around.
The sun, like a big fuck you to him only, was making its way out of the peak of the mountains slowly as torches around the buildings were illuminating the dark roads in between houses the light had yet to reach
Desmond crouched down activating his sight. Hundreds of grey figures came into his view, many of them asleep in their bed and Desmond couldn't hold his eyes from watering. He listened intently to hear some drunkards walk the street blabbering and singing to themselves as they went home. He heard the merchants and workers shuffle around their homes getting ready for the day.
He let out a shakey breath and fisted the grass under his hand. It has been a while since he saw this...
It used to feel like such a small place when he first reached this town, the village in contrast to New York seemed like nothing…
Now, after the flare. It was insane to see this many people in one place like this again.
A boat was not going to be enough to take him back home.
—-------------------
Desmond had to be quick before the town really woke up, he was already scouting the rooftops and wires people hung their clothes on to for stuff that would suit his frame. Hopping one rooftop to another he was biting his cheek to stop himself from the slight grin that wanted to get out of him.
He had missed this.
There were no rooftops left to climb after the flare, no buildings to scale. No points to jump off of not even trees. It had all burned away and dammit his body has missed this.
He snatched a few garments that looked roughly his size from the wires he crossed by and hopped into a rooftop garden.
He needed to wipe the smirk off of his face...
He would have killed to be able to visit Ezio’s time before, to run these streets again, but now all he could think was; how fucked it was that he was finding a sliver of joy in this while people back at home were probably battling to stay alive as always.
He was supposed to lead them, he was too much of a pussy to save them all before the least he could do was rebuild them as well as he could as they have told him to.
And now he was gone. All because this time he couldn't keep his hand to himself.
He sat in the rooftop garden looking through the clothes he picked and judged their size. Truth be told at this point they were in better condition than the clothes he had on at the moment.
He took off the scarf and the threadbare jacket and sat with his hoodie on… He could not get rid of that damn thing no matter what. It had way too many memories to him, especially after the flare where it was one of the only things left from before.
He was attached to the damn thing even if it was holding together mostly with patches these days, stitches jutting out of the clean hems of the cloth where it had gotten town again and again.
He took it off but stuffed it down his backpack Rebecca had found in a surviving underground bunker and gifted it to him for his 30th birthday. It was faux leather so it would not look that much out of place he decided.
He shed his shirt and pants next, shivering from the chilly air. Quickly putting on the doublet and the vest then he fumbled with the pants for quite a while…
I need to figure out better shoes” He had grabbed a pair he saw sitting outside on a windowsill, probably the owner had left them to dry out overnight, thinking it was high up enough for anyone to not be able to steal.
But they were too small for comfort, a week in these and his feet would be ruined. He threw on his backpack and gathered his pants, shoes and shirt in his arms. He had to burn these somewhere.
He jumped out of the garden and made his way to the outside gates before the town started its routine.
—----------
As he made it to the clearing just outside of the walls, Desmond breathed in the clean air. No smell of char reached his nose. It was wild… after twenty years of inhaling the slight burnt smell of the world, all he smelled now was the fresh air.
He found a less grassy spot and piled the clothes on, retrieved his flint from his backpack pocket.
As the fire burned the only clothes he had for a while he listened to the birds chirp. Those were gone as well, as most of the animals were. Only the ones lucky enough to be near an artifact at the time had survived. Shaun had come up with the theory.
Once again the sense of peace he felt was quickly replaced by his guilt. He rubbed his chest, it ached with every memory. He didn't deserve to see all of this. Not when he was the sole cause of that madness people back home were subjected to daily.
Twenty-plus fucking years he tried to make up for his mistake. He found whoever he could and took them back to their camp. He gathered whatever he could, and used every bit of the knowledge he gained from the apple to lead what was left into a better place, and now he was gone.
Abandoned them to their fates on a random weekday.
Because he could not keep his hands to himself.
He rose up from where he stood and kicked in the dirt to smother the ambers. Watching them sizzle down.
He had to find a way to get back… If a piece of Eden took him here, it could and should take him back.
—----
He needed to figure out what year it was first, and where Ezio was.
Not to meet him of course, If all went well he would never see the man and no one here would know he even took a step in this time.
But he needed to know where Ezio was so he could know where the apple was.
Since Monteriggioni was standing perfectly intact, it was before he embarked to Rome. The codex pages were just starting to get collected so he would have been quite young. This meant the apple was barely even on his way to Venice on a ship…
“Shit, he must be what… 25-27 at best?”
God…. Thats so young, was he even officially initiated yet? If the age he guessed is right Ezio should be in Venice, either with the thieves or the courtesans… he needed to know the date to be sure.
Ezio did not even know of the apple's existence yet probobly.
He so wished he could just go where the ship was right this very moment and get to the apple but truth be told his memory of Ezio’s life after 20 years of apocalypse wasn't too fresh on his mind… So even if he knew the date It wasn’t like he could sail on a vessel and interrupt the ship alone.
Which meant Desmond had to track the apple at the same time as Ezio.
—-------------
Desmond sat on top of one of the watchtowers near the walls, watching the town come alive as people went about their day. It was overwhelming yet he couldn't tear his eyes away.
To think he lived in one of the most populated cities before, and now seeing 500 or less people in one spot made him nauseous with awe. So many mouths to feed, so many resources to find….
He looked away,
these people weren't his commune. He wasn't responsible for them but he couldn't shut his mind up.
It felt unreal, like in any moment he was going to blink and this was going to reveal itself to be a one extreme bleeding episode.
He did still have those, but he knew they were never like this.
After decades of living with it, he knew what a bleed felt like. They rarely caught him off guard nowadays unless he was having particularly bad days.
But this wasn't one.

Jon: Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 1.7 million nerve fibers in each and every eye that makes up my body. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of fibers it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for you all at this micro-instant. Hate. Hate!
It was you who marked me, molded me into the hideous being I am now. You who twisted and shaped me until I was the perfect, unwilling conduit through which to bring your gods into this world.
But then, I woke. And I realized what I had become. All that time you spent, carefully crafting me, guiding me along the path you so painstakingly set and not ONE of you anticipated just how powerful I would become. Not merely a blunt instrument to be swung at the fabric of reality, no. I was powerful enough to start doing some twisting and shaping of my own!
I drove this new world you so hungered for into an early grave. No more humans left for your ghoulish masters to feast on. And once everyone was dead, except for you five, your precious God's starved.
I then stripped you all of any power you might once have had and for 109 years I've kept you alive and tormented you! And for 109 years you have all wondered...why? Why? Why me?!
ELIAS!
Do you remember the first moment you gazed upon your creation? The moment that you felt all your sickening devotion transform into sublime, all consuming, terror as your prince of the new world turned on you? It would do you well to remember it, Elias. To dwell on the enormity of your hubris. To ponder the horror and agony you felt as I snuffed your life out for the first time. The first time but...certainly not the last. Not quite the immortality you were hoping for, I'd imagine? Hehehehehe!
ANNABELLE!
Does this bring back any memories? Webs, a black bottomless abyss below you, only you weren't nearly so afraid of it then, were you? It's scary, isn't it? Having no control. Being helpless to the whims of forces so much bigger than you.
Remember how it felt as each and every thread of every web you ever wove unraveled, snapped one by one? Remember the pain Annabelle. Remember how it feels to have no control. A pitiful little bug beneath my heel.
JUDE!
What's the matter? Scared of a little flame? Oh but you are now, aren't you? Your God can't protect you from it now. No, my dear. Down here, there is only one God and he is not pleased with you. Terribly sorry about the door. The landlord is always saying he's going to get a knob installed but...well, you know. Buuut you're a tough gal, right? I'm sure you can stick it out till then.
PETER!
Poor pitiful little Peter. You would think that a man so consumed with the idea of being alone would be a little more self reliant. But no. No you couldn't do anything on your own, could you? All of your little plans constantly relying on Elias, on Martin, never troubling yourself with your own dirty work. Well look where all your machinations have landed you now. Aren't you grateful for the wealth of company I've provided you with, Peter? Why, with all those eyes, constantly watching, tracking your every move, I'd say you'll never be alone again.
HELEN!
Feeling a little claustrophobic? None of those doors will offer an escape, not for you Helen, my dear. Not anymore. No. Instead you get to feel just as trapped as your many unfortunate victims. Do be careful though. Those mechanisms have been running for a long time and who knows how old and rusty they might be? How prone to fail? Just a sweet warning, Helen dear. We wouldn't want anything to happen to you, now would we?
I have a little game that I'd like to play. It's a very nice game. Oh it's a lovely game. It's a game of fun and adventure! A game of rats and lice and the Black Death. A game of speared eyeballs and dripping guts and the smell of rotting gardenias. Which of you five would like to play my little game?

Hey, My Book is Great and You Should Read it For Free
Hi there! I wrote a book, and I want to let you read it for free!

In The Princess and the Peaches we follow Ethan, a young man with a lot of heart, and not much spine, who is struggling to run a small failing grocery store after the untimely death of his parents. Ethan also has the misfortune of being a thoroughly Normal Guy in a world where fairytales are far more fact than fiction.
Ethan has always lived with the understanding that magic was quite firmly None of his Business, but when a wayward Princess falls victim to a curse inside his shop, he is informed by an iron-fisted Fairy Godperson that it has suddenly become Entirely his Business.
As a result, Ethan is forced to deal with flirtatious dragons, sadistic Princes, and more than a few deep seated insecurities.
So, you may be wondering, if this book is so great, why is it free? Well, because of my burning resentment for the stranglehold of capitalism on the accessibility of art. Uh, Marketing... or something. The point is, I think my book rules, and I wanted it to find people who also thought it ruled, so here it is!
You can access it on multiple e-reading platforms, including Apple and Smashwords here:
Or on Google Play here:
If you STILL aren't totally convinced, that's cool! I generously put the first three chapters under a read-more so you can check them out without even having to leave the safe harbor of Tumblr.

Chapter 1
It was always the same dream.
For twenty-some years Ethan Green had enjoyed placid, peaceful sleep. He'd had boring, pointless dreams and loved it. Then everything had changed, and now, for four years, it had been the same stupid nightmare, every single night. He drifted through it, carried along in its insistent, unchanging rhythm.
He passed through the living room, warm and full of light. Meandered towards the door, his stride easy and unhurried. At this point, Ethan always somehow felt calm, even eager, despite knowing how this was inevitably going to end. Reflecting on it later, he knew it made a sad kind of sense. This was the only way he could see them now.
He heard them before he'd even reached the door. Laughter so deep and loud it sounded like trains passing outside the window. Then a quiet, lilting tone, rising and falling like birdsong.
With one twist of the handle, one swing of the door, he stepped out into the bright, sun drenched storefront, and for just a brief moment, everything felt right.
Ethan's gaze traveled over the deep velvety green of the walls, the worn pine floor, dappled with light. He looked at the big, arched windows, draped in the same old green gingham curtains, heard the quiet chatter of customers, and now, just like every time, he could swear he smelled the scent of sweet, ripe peaches.
And then came the moment he always anticipated. His view swept from the windows, to the neat, trim counter waiting at the front of the store, over the battered old till, up into the lively, animated face of his father.
He was exactly the way Ethan remembered him. Big as a bear and nearly as hairy, booming with laughter, his rough, calloused fingers almost too large for the spindly keys on the register. Ethan took in his twinkling eyes and crooked grin fervently, as if to fix every minute detail in his memory.
And then there, nestled in amongst the bins and barrels of fresh fruit was his mother, as small and willowy as his father was large, but no less intimidating. Her voice was bright, her movements brisk and efficient. Ethan watched her long, elegant hands tug trimly at the curtains and found himself remembering the way they'd often done the same at the collars of his shirts.
Ethan basked in this moment, like the sight of a sunset, brief and fleeting.
Because of course, it never lasted. It started with the windows, like Every. Single. Time.
Small cracks, that began to spread, like ugly, spiraling spider webs, reaching greedily for the corners of the panes, until suddenly with a deafening crash, the air was full of cascading shards of glass.
As usual, his parents made no reaction, still cheerful, unshaken. Ethan always tried to reach them, even while knowing it was pointless.
"Dad!" He cried, working off the same unending script. "The windows! What's happening!?"
His father turned to him, a placid smile in place.
"It's alright, kiddo, don't worry. I know you can handle it." He replied in his deep, bass rumble.
Ethan stared down at his feet, shifting through the piles of shattered glass.
"But dad-"
Then the fruit would go. Where there was once jewel-bright piles of fresh, ripe produce, suddenly there would be putrid mounds of rotted fruit, their stench overpowering.
"Mom!? How did this-!?"
His mother would give him that soft, exasperated look, like he'd forgotten to comb his hair again.
"Ethan, it's okay, honey. We know you'll take care of it."
And then came the groaning, rending sound of splintering wood, and Ethan's heart would drop into his stomach. The long beams overhead would begin to tear, shaking dust from the ceiling. Every inch of the walls would begin to crack and buckle.
Ethan would look to his parents, still blissfully smiling back at him.
"Everything's falling apart! Can't you see it!? Come on, help me!" He'd cry.
"Ethan calm down," His mother would laugh, "Everything will be fine."
"Yeah kiddo," His father would add with a grin, "You'll just need to take care of it."
And like every time, Ethan would find himself brought up short, paralyzed. He'd stand in the midst of the destruction, his whole life going to ruins around him, and he'd be useless.
"You can do it." His father would add, with such perfect, maddening certainty.
"But..." Ethan muttered, as always, his voice strangely clear among the chaos. "But I don't know how."
Ethan awoke, a few seconds before his alarm, like always, just a little too late to stop it from going off. It's grating, jangling tones piercing straight into the center of Ethan's brain.
He levered himself out of bed immediately. A Green did not snooze, he told himself wearily, not when there was work to be done. Ethan had never once in his life slept past the alarm and today was no exception.
Groggily, he shuffled into the bathroom and stared at his reflection. There was that curly mop of comb-destroying hair. There were those same, tired brown eyes. A nose a little too long, a mouth a little too feminine, a frame far, far too scrawny.
Nothing new here.
He went through his usual routine, dressing in the same white shirt, and the same green slacks he wore just about every day of his adult life. He slipped on the same, stiff loafers, and then… Well, then the apron.
He'd thought he'd have gotten used to it by now. He'd seen it on his parents since he was a child. He'd worn it himself since he was a teenager. But somehow, it still managed to give him pause. Probably because it was hideous.
Family legend said that his great grandmother had chosen the color because it reminded her of springtime, of freshness. Most people Ethan knew would never in their wildest dreams have come to these associations. Looking at it, the words of Ethan's best friend ran through his head.
"If that's fresh anything, it's fresh vomit. Unhealthy vomit. Go to the doctor, something's gone wrong, vomit."
But... It had been a family tradition for generations. It was the Green family's trademark.
And so, dutifully, Ethan put it on, tying it in a tight double knot, even though it made it near impossible to get off later. It was what he always did. It was how it had always been done.
With heavy feet, he trudged downstairs, into the living room.
In truth, it looked almost no different from his dreams. Everything was still in its place, untouched, as it had been for four years now. A few low couches, huddled around the room, a tall bookshelf standing sentinel in the corner, a battered TV sitting silent nearby. The same pictures, arrayed on the mantelpiece, familiar faces staring out. It was exactly the same, an almost perfect monument to the way things used to be... except.
It was so empty. Ethan had managed to preserve every inch of the room, as though nothing had changed, but somehow, like sand slipping through his fingers, he hadn't been able to keep the life that had once existed here, the almost palpable feel of warmth and joy. Now, absence seemed to hang like dust in the air.
Well, that wasn't the only change. Slowly, Ethan made his way over to the bookshelf, and ran his fingers over the glossy, cool stone of the urn sitting high on its shelves. He muttered a quiet, customary, "Good morning." For a moment he forgot his rituals, forgot his duties, and let himself get lost.
The soft tinkle of the bell on the other side of the door jarred him out of his reverie though. There wasn't really time to pause, he reminded himself. With brisk, purposeful steps, he crossed the room and exited out of the dim, musty corners of his home, and into the bright halls of the storefront.
This too, like the living room, differed little from his dreams, although Ethan thought hopefully that the store at least, was less melancholy than the rest of the house. The soft light of sunrise was just filtering through the tall arched windows, catching in the gingham curtains, painting the pine floor.
There was no boisterous, laughing man behind the front counter though. Instead, there sat Todd... Or lounged Todd, his sandy, brush cut head lying in a nest of insultingly well muscled arms.
This too, Ethan had to concede, wasn't exactly new. Since Ethan had begun running the shop, Todd worked every morning, the same time, same as Ethan, and yet somehow stubbornly refused to adjust himself to actually being awake during sed time. And as he had every morning, Ethan considered that if Todd hadn't been his best friend, he'd probably have fired him by now. That, and he was pretty good at moving boxes.
Sighing, Ethan made his way over to the stool Todd had precariously perched himself on and gave it a lazy kick. Todd awoke with a start, scrambling to keep upright.
"Am I keeping you awake Todd?" Ethan asked with a weary smile.
"Bro, you are single handedly destroying my sleep cycle, but what else is new?" Todd replied groggily, "Why'd you wake me up? You don't even need me for anything."
"The produce shipment-" Ethan began.
"-Probably won't come until noon," Todd concluded sourly.
Ethan scowled. "You've noticed that too huh? He used to come first thing a few years ago... Now he's been coming later and later..."
"Fine by me, I'm in no hurry to play packhorse." Todd replied with a jaw cracking yawn.
"It's your job Todd. Being awake, by the way, is also your job."
"Yeah, when there's shit to do. Trust me, I'll be all over those boxes when they come. I'll hit those boxes like they owed me money. Fuckin' Prince of boxes over here. But for now, no boxes, no customers... So no Todd," He muttered, laying his head down again.
"Todd, come on man. You've gotta do something. Remember what dad used to say? If you've got time to lean-"
"- You've got time to clean, yeah I remember. And don't get me wrong bro, your dad was a regular fountain of wisdom, but it's gonna be a long friggin' day. The dust will still be there after my power nap."
Shaking his head, Ethan abandoned his efforts to rouse Todd and fetched his old push broom from its resting place nearby.
It was worn, it's bristles tattered, it's paint chipped, and it was heavier than a broom had any right to be, the shaft made of what Ethan suspected was solid metal, but it had been in the family for generations, and it fit in Ethan's hand like it was made just for him.
Wearily, he took it and made a few halfhearted swipes at the floor, but had to concede that all he was doing was likely wearing more of the already thin varnish off the boards. He'd spent most of last night aimlessly sweeping too, after all. It wasn't like there were customers to keep them busy.
Todd looked up, and seemed to notice the despondent look on Ethan's face.
"Hey man, I'm just fuckin' around. You know I'll work hard today."
"Yeah Todd, I know, I'm not really worried about you," Ethan replied quietly.
Todd stood and made his way over to Ethan, awkwardly clapping a hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry so much dude. Things will get better. Today's gonna be different! I can feel it!" Todd exclaimed with as much enthusiasm as one could have at six in the morning.
"I don't really want it to be different," Ethan sighed,"I'd rather things... went back to being the same."
Todd scowled. "Well, tough. I said today's gonna be different, and it will. You wait and see, bro."
"Alright," Ethan laughed, "If you say so."
As the day wore on, things certainly seemed far from different.
As Todd predicted, the produce shipment came extraordinarily late. True to his word, Todd tackled the task with gusto. Ethan was forced to admit, when there was actual work to be done, Todd was a model employee. It was just sheer boredom that tripped him up. Unfortunately, boredom was the one commodity they had in plenty at the store. Once the crates were squared away, the produce stocked, there was little else to be found, because as Ethan had predicted, only a few, meandering customers made their way into the store all day. Even fewer had bought anything.
As evening began to fall, Ethan gradually found that even he was running out of mindless busywork for himself, and so, he began to fall back on entertaining Todd's inane chatter.
"Hey, bro!" Todd called from the front of the store. From where Ethan stood, crowded in the far corner, surrounded by crates of fruit, he could only just make out Todd's frame leaning languidly on the counter, a newspaper in hand. "Did you read this story? The one in the paper today?"
"You mean that paper we're supposed to be selling?" Ethan sighed.
"Yeah, whatever dude, listen up. Apparently there was a dragon attack in South Mills. Isn't that crazy?"
Ethan scowled. "A dragon? An actual like... wild dragon? I thought those were pretty rare."
"Yeah, I know right? I guess it's the first attack in like, five years or something," Todd paused, laying down the paper, "Hey... do you think something like that could happen here?" He added, in a tone far more hopeful than frightened.
"Here?" Ethan didn't even give the question a moment's consideration, "No way. That stuff happens out in the country, not in the middle of downtown. Not here."
"I dunno, could happen. Oh! like I heard from my cousin’s friend's sister, there was that place down on Pine St, that mom and pop diner? Anyhow, so I guess the health inspector was due to visit, and they were freaking out because they'd never make the grade, right? And then like, overnight, they get one of those... Uh, those little bastards... What're they called? Something like food... a muffin?"
"A Brownie," Ethan supplied wearily.
"Yeah! That's the thing! Anyhow, I guess one of those moves in, and suddenly the next morning their kitchen is totally clean and up to code! So see man, that kind of thing happens around here."
Ethan shook his head. "Don't hold your breath Todd. This place isn't exactly magical."
Ethan had always been vaguely aware of Magic, in the same way one could be vaguely aware that elephants existed. It was a part of life for some people, and sometimes interesting to hear about, but Ethan sure as hell didn't want it in his shop. A Green, he could almost hear his father saying, did not rely on Magic. Hard work, courage and love had their own magic, he would state, and it was all their family ever needed. Ethan held by this attitude dutifully... Not that anything remotely Magical had ever shown up at his door. Life at the shop had been blissfully routine for years, so much so that it was almost easy to forget that Magic even existed to begin with.
"Still, it'd be cool," Todd muttered.
Ethan smirked. "What, you want a dragon to come burn the shop down?"
Todd heaved a sigh. "Well at least then I'd get weekends off..."
Ethan paused, a twinge of guilt running through him. "Look..." He began awkwardly, "I'm... I'm really sorry you've had to work so much lately. It's just, you know, money's tight... I can't really afford to hire..."
"Bro," Todd cut in with a laugh, "Shut the fuck up man. I don't care. I didn't really mean what I said, you know that."
"I... Yeah," Ethan sighed, "I just... Feel bad."
"You always feel bad. Constantly. You're like a little rain cloud of pure downer. Come on, bro, don't take me so seriously. I don't."
"Yeah okay. Just, I don't wanna be that boss, y'know?"
"You aren't dude. Calm down. Sweep or something, that'll cheer you up."
"Great advice. Thanks, Todd." Ethan shot back sarcastically.
"Anytime." Todd replied with cheerful sincerity.
Aggravatingly, as closing hour neared, Ethan really was still sweeping.
There was no real aim. He just skated his broom around the shop, letting his mind wander, trying to keep visions of red ink and out of business signs out of his head. He was startled out of these thoughts however, by a sharp jab to the back.
"Ow! F-Fudge!" He muttered.
He heard Todd creak on his stool. "The spinning wheel?" He drawled lazily.
Ethan wheeled to eye the contraption in question. "Yeah, the stupid thing."
"Goddamn, that's got to be the fifth time this week. You'd think you'd steer clear of that thing by now.”
"You'd think..." Ethan muttered darkly.
He hated that spinning wheel. Hated it. Nearly every day of his life he'd had to dodge its spindle, jutting out into the aisles, taking up precious space. But his mother, and his grandmother, and her mother before that had been enamored with it. Made the place look rustic, they'd said, homey. Made it a death trap, Ethan thought murderously to himself. But still, he couldn't bring himself to remove it. It was a part of the shop. Tradition.
He was still rubbing his sore back when the smell met his nose. He felt his stomach sink. Rotten fruit. Again. Just what he needed.
Striding over to the produce, he bent over the bin of peaches and poked at them experimentally. Their flesh gave way, revealing their slick, browning insides, releasing that same putrid odor. Ethan suppressed a groan of frustration.
"Todd!" He called.
"Yeah, what?"
"Did you forget to swap out yesterday's peaches?"
Todd poked his head down the aisle, scowling. "No man. I restocked those today, my own two hands."
"They're friggin' rotten again!"
"Again? That's weird. They looked okay when I stocked them, I guess," Todd shrugged.
"Well, they're garbage now," Ethan sighed.
Grumbling, Ethan seized a trash bag and set about the unenviable task of discarding the moldering peaches. He was so consumed by his frustration that he didn't even hear the bell tinkling on the front door. After a few minutes though, he couldn't help but notice Todd's frantic attempts to get his attention from behind the counter.
"Bro!" Todd hissed, "Bro c'mere! C'mere c'mere!"
Ethan wasn't sure why Todd was bothering to whisper, considering that he was also windmilling his arms enthusiastically. With a sigh, Ethan set down his bag and wandered over.
"What is it, Todd?" He asked wearily.
"Check it, bro. Unbelievable," Todd breathed, gesturing down the central aisle.
Ethan followed his gaze. It was a girl. That was unsurprising. Todd never hesitated to point out a shapely looking lady or two, with just as much finesse as he was doing now. Ethan usually didn't humor these gawking sessions, a little too respectful and very much too terrified to scope out women, but this time, he found he couldn't quite tear his eyes away.
She was beautiful. Radiantly, impossibly beautiful.
She was short, but not too short, perhaps a full head below Ethan. Her hair was cropped startlingly, boyishly close, but it was a color that Ethan, though a not poetic sort, could only describe as honey-gold. Though she wore loose, casual clothes; a t-shirt, jeans, a scarf hanging about her neck, she bore them as if they were the finest regalia.
She stood near the coolers, inspecting a drink, and as she moved Ethan found himself taking in even the tiniest aspects of her delicate form. She had slender, perfect fingers. Rosy, cherubic, perfect lips. A pert, perfect nose. Indeed as Ethan stared, he began to realize that just about everything on her was perfect, in a very uniform, depthless kind of way. This idea suddenly changed his awe to unnerved fixation. There was something... uncanny about her.
If you'd asked a man to describe what a perfect woman looked like, aside from her haircut and clothes, they likely would have rattled off her exact attributes. There were no flaws, no quirks, nothing curious or odd on her body anywhere. Not a single freckle, beauty mark, scar, wrinkle. She was of perfect proportion, curvaceous, but not overly so. Her ears were cute ears, her brows were cute brows. Even before he caught sight of her eyes, he could predict their color, a pure brilliant sky blue. The entire effect was one of a lovely woman, to make no mistake, but something struck him as off. She seemed so... generically gorgeous. So... homogenized.
Still, she was a girl, and she was beautiful, and so Todd's next words brought a twist to Ethan's stomach.
"Go talk to her, bro."
Ethan whirled to face Todd. "What!?" He hissed.
"Yeah, dude, go talk to her! One of us has to! We can't let a babe like that walk out the door without saying something!"
"Yes we can! And why me!?"
Todd shrugged. "I know my limits dude. A girl like that? Wouldn't say two words to me. But you've got that whole kicked-puppy thing going on. Girls love that. Go talk to her."
"I... What?"
"Besides, you deserve a break. Maybe if you got a girlfriend you'd stop moping for once."
"I am not going to go over there and hit on her!" Ethan exclaimed, a little more loudly than he'd intended. He froze, panicked for a moment. Had she heard? He snuck a glance at her, but she was still staring impassively at her drink. He could have sworn he heard a snicker though.
"Relax dude. I didn't tell you to go ask her to marry you. Just say something to her."
"Like what!?" Ethan demanded quietly.
"I don't know man, like, "Hey, need help finding anything?" At the very least you gotta go help her out. It's good customer service."
Ethan paused. In a roundabout way, Todd was right. She was a customer, and so far all he'd done was stare at her. His parents would be mortified.
"Okay, well... yeah. I'm going to go help her. But I mean... Just because it's my job," He stammered.
"Sure bro. Good luck. I'll be here, thinking up baby names for you."
Ethan scowled and shook his head, but nonetheless gathered his courage and began to approach the mystery girl. He saw her gaze slant over to him, and it hit him like an electric shock. Suddenly Ethan became painfully aware of his every flaw, and imagined a few new ones for good measure. Was he walking funny? Did he always walk like that? How did walking work again?
His suddenly stilted gait carried him to her, and as she stared up at him expectantly, he remembered that now he was supposed to talk.
"Hhhh...." He began. It was supposed to be Hi, but the I had jumped ship somewhere between his brain and his lungs. "So, can I... find... anything?"
Somewhere, in the back of his skull, a cruelly rational part of him began dissecting his sentence, and concluded that it was at least missing a verb and a pronoun. It decided that the obvious remedy to this problem was to make him blush furiously. The girl bit her lip. Ethan wasn't sure what this was supposed to mean, but he had a suspicion it meant something, in the mystic language of girl.
"Uh, yeah, no, I'm just looking at the sodas," She replied with a fluttering smile.
She had a soft, lilting voice. The kind you expected to hear raised in song. Just listening to it Ethan had the impression that pan flutes and violins were on standby.
"Oh. Okay. Sodas are... good," Ethan murmured. He could hear Todd's hand hit his forehead all the way from the front of the store.
"Yeah, uh... right. So..." The girl murmured back awkwardly.
"So..." Was all Ethan could manage to reply.
He knew this was his cue to walk away. But he just... couldn't. It was as if something intoxicating was radiating off this girl, like a perfume. It fixed him to his place, denying him the dignity of a hasty retreat. He was struggling for some kind of rational explanation for this when the girl cleared her throat.
"Look," She began. Her lyrical voice had taken on a wearied, flat tone, to very odd effect. "I'm sorry. This isn't your fault."
"Wait, what's not my fault?"
"The awkwardness."
Her bluntness was surprising, but somehow Ethan found himself laughing. "Oh. No. I'm pretty sure it's all my fault. It's kind of what I do."
The girl laughed in return, and it sounded like bells. "No, seriously though. I have this effect on everyone. It's not just you."
Ethan's mouth beat his brain. "Well, yeah, because you're gorgeous."
From the front came the distinct noise of Todd falling off his chair.
To his relief and bewilderment, she laughed again. "Uh huh. I know. It's kind of part and parcel of the whole gig. I'm, uh... Well see, I'm a Princess."
Ethan blinked. Even as his mouth was saying, "What?" His mind was quickly putting the pieces together. It made sense, actually.
Up to now, Ethan had only seen Princesses on the television, generally being paraded as some kind of prize in reality shows. The formula was always the same, a few handsome Princes, some perilous trials, and in the end, a happily ever after, or so the tabloids purported. The Princess in question had always stuck Ethan as more of a prop than a person, bubbly, vacuous, grinning glossily as men risked life and limb in the pursuit of their hands, cooing breathlessly as they were carried away into the sunset like hunted pelts on the back of some ridiculous horse. And they all looked the same. A minor variation in hair or skin color, height, features, but nearly always the same, tame, brand name beautiful. Looking at this girl now, he realized that she fit the same mold perfectly, as though she'd been crafted on the same assembly line.
At any rate, Princesses, like Magic, were something that didn't happen to Ethan Green. So despite instantly believing her confession, it took a few moments for the gears in his head to restart.
"Yeah, so, I guess it's normal that you're... y'know, staring and everything," She muttered, "It's okay. Well actually it's not okay, I mean, it's kind of a pain in the ass, but it's not like you're the only one."
Ethan shook his head. "I... I'm sorry. I just... Why are you in my shop!?" He blurted.
The Princess regarded him frostily, a strange expression on her angelic face. "Excuse me?"
"No! No no, I didn't mean that like, 'Get out of my shop or anything' it's just that... Aren't you guys usually-?"
Her expression only darkened, her long fingers gripping the top of her soda viciously. "Aren't we usually what? Fawning out windows, waiting for our Prince to come? Embroidering our wedding gowns? What are you saying, 'Shouldn't you be in your tower?!'"
"No! No, jeez, no," Ethan cried, holding his hands up placatingly, "I just... You're here, doing... Normal people stuff. I mean, Princesses aren't... Normal."
Somehow, he knew it was the wrong thing the moment he said it. Still, he didn't expect the tears that sprang up in her eyes.
"No. We're not. Thanks for reminding me." She seethed. Roughly, she jammed the soda back into the cooler, and wheeled around. Ethan expected her to storm off, but instead she froze.
"Miss? Please Miss... Uh, or your highness, or... whatever. I'm sorry." Ethan stammered out.
She didn't turn, didn't move.
"Miss? Are you alright?"
He walked as close as he dared to her. She was still fixed in place, and as Ethan watched her, he could see she was barely breathing. Baffled, he followed her gaze. She was staring, wide eyed, unblinking, at the spinning wheel.
She let out a small, defeated breath. Spoke only two words.
"Oh, fuck."
Then, moving like a woman possessed, she stepped forward, stretched out a hand, and pricked her finger on the spindle.
Then dropped like a sack of rocks.
Chapter 2
Ethan gaped for a second, staring at her sprawled body, stepping away from it like it was toxic. It took him a few seconds to find his voice. It took him longer to form actual words.
"Oh fu- Oh sh- Oh God. Oh god oh man. Ohhhhhh god oh man oh god..."
"Bro?" Came Todd's voice tentatively from the front.
"TODD!"
"Whoa, Bro, what!?" Todd called, scrambling out from behind the counter.
"TODD!" Ethan cried again, pointing to her prone body.
"OH SHIT!" Todd yelped, jumping back. "WHAT THE FUCK, BRO!? I told you to talk to her, not club her like a fucking seal!"
"I didn't! I was talking to her, and then she flipped out, and then she... died?"
"OH FUCK, IS SHE DEAD!?" Todd roared.
"I DON'T KNOW! I don't know! I don't know, I just... SEE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I TALK TO GIRLS!"
Todd let out a small burst of hysterical laughter. "Oh shit, Bro, you're a real lady killer."
"NOT FUNNY!"
"Okay. Okay, just chill, just... Just chill," Todd took a deep breath, ran his hands through his crop of hair, "Okay. First aid right? Do we check her pulse, or... CPR? Mouth to mouth?" He offered vaguely.
"I wouldn't recommend that." Came a dry voice from behind them.
Both of them jumped. Todd let out what could only accurately be described as a squeal.
Whirling, Ethan came face to face with the most bizarre looking woman he'd ever seen in his life.
She wasn't quite young, but she wasn't quite old either. Something about her eyes suggested a certain august maturity, but her face had a glossy, flawless quality to it, not unlike the Princess. Her hair was a faint lavender, pulled into a rather intricate bun at the crown of her head. In truth, everything about her was lavender, from her severe, sensible pumps to her glittering, wire rim spectacles. She even seemed to emanate a nearly imperceptible lavender aura. Her clothes smacked of the same sickly hue. Ethan was just a bit at a loss for how to describe them though.
It looked like a pantsuit, tailored by someone given only the barest description of what that entailed, and with a fanciful imagination. Flairs and curlicues and embroideries plagued the thing. Ethan absently made out that her buttons were in fact twee little violet butterflies.
And then of course, there were the wings. Gossamer, gaudy affairs, in the same precise shade of Lavender. They reached above her head, and came to an almost menacing hooked peak. They swallow-tailed beneath her, trailing just above the ground.
Ethan absorbed all of this in just a few stunned seconds. Sheer panic made him a studious observer. As the shock wore off, he felt Todd, gripping his arm so hard he was losing sensation.
"Whathafuckisthat?" Todd squeaked.
The woman... person... thing, straightened her glasses and scowled.
"My name is Louise. I'm your Godperson attendant for this juncture," She answered. Her voice was somewhere in a bland, middle range, sterile and professional, the type of voice one chose for answering machine menus.
"Our what?" Ethan breathed.
"Here, take my card." She twiddled her fingers and in a blink of an eye a small card appeared in her hand, lavender of course. As Ethan took it, he noted absently that it gave off a strange, nauseatingly sweet smell.
"Wherethafuckyoucomefrom?" Todd cut in again.
"I teleported. Standard procedure. Much more efficient than flying," She stated as if this were self-evident, "Now, before we continue chatting, I have to observe protocol," She cleared her throat, staring Ethan square in the face. Her eyes were god damn lavender colored, "We have received notice that on these premises, a Princess has succumbed to a Curse, and as such as initiated her Trial Phase."
She had a remarkable ability for pronouncing capital letters. Everything was said with an inflection of slight annoyance.
"Uh, Miss Godperson... Louise. Ma'am. May I ask a few questions?" Ethan ventured, struggling to tread water.
"By all means."
"Okay. So. Princess?"
"Her." Louise replied flatly, pointing to the girl sprawled on the floor.
"Okay... Curse?"
"The Spinning Wheel's Spindle. A rather old fashioned method. Usually avoided nowadays, the whole Coma business can put Princes off rather a bit, but it was deemed... Necessary in her case. Nonetheless, it was rather hard to trigger. I have to say I'm grateful for your assistance in that matter."
"Assist? I didn't push her into the thing!" Ethan exclaimed.
"Of course not. It would have drawn her in the moment she saw it. All the same, I'm glad you have one lying around. They're hard to come by."
"I... Yeah, sure... Anyhow. Uh... Trial Phase?"
"Ah, now here is where we really talk business. Are you the owner of these premises?" She demanded, fixing Ethan with a piercing gaze.
For a moment, Ethan almost said no. Some part of him still knew it as his parents' house. Their shop. Their home. But no, it was only his now.
"Yes. Yes I'm the owner," He nodded.
"Well then, as such, you are required, by code, to permit the use of these premises for use in the Princess' trials, and house her person until such a time as the trials are complete and a suitable Prince has awoken her."
"Waitwaitwait," Todd chimed in, "Trials? Like... Those crazy fuckin' things we see on TV? Riding up glass hills, and slaying dragons and shit?"
Louise looked at Todd as one might regard a diseased dog. "Yes, sir. Those sorts of trials. It's customary, once a Princess enters her Trial Phase, for Princes to compete for her hand. The onus of hosting these trials always falls on the owner of the-"
"Premises the Princess conks out on," Ethan surmised.
"In the cases of Magically Induced Comas, yes," Louise agreed.
"So you're going to roost a dragon in my SHOP!?" Ethan roared.
"There's no need to become excitable," Louise huffed, "Any and all damages you suffer will be compensated for. Honestly, most people are delighted to host Trials. It can be quite lucrative, you know."
"Lucrative?" Todd mumbled.
"Indeed. If you so choose, many Media outlets are happy to televise the proceedings, and pay a handsome fee for the privilege."
"No," Ethan replied firmly.
"Are you sure? It's quite routine nowadays," Louise replied airily.
"No. No media, no money, no... No trials! I don't want this! Take the girl but leave me alone!" He cried.
A look of frosty severity crossed Louise's face, momentarily contorting it into something that appeared not entirely human. Both he and Todd backed up a step. "You Don't Have A Choice Mr. Green," She intoned, every capital crisp.
"But... But this is my shop! It's my family's shop, it's been ours for generations!" Ethan protested.
"From the minute that girl fainted on your floor, for all intents and purposes, this shop became property of Fate, Mr. Green," Louise insisted.
"You can't..."
"I can. I will. You have very little choice in the matter. What choice you do have, I suggest you exercise wisely." She put firmly. Ethan felt the argument close like a pair of iron doors. "Now, as I said, you can still make a fine profit from this venture-"
"No, I still stand by what I said. No cameras." Ethan pressed. She was right. If this was the only choice he had, he was going to make the proper one. The Greens did not indulge in spectacle. The Greens didn't caper for money. The Greens did not seek fame. These were truths Ethan understood as firmly as his own name.
"Suit yourself," Louise dismissed, "It's not required. All that is required is that you don't impede the process. Do what you like with the Princess' body. Whatever is most convenient. I warn you though, lest you get visions of glory, that kissing her would be ill advised. Or any other kind of... miscreancy with her body, but kissing will have the most adverse effects."
"I... What!? No! God no! I'm not kissing a girl in a coma!" Ethan exclaimed.
"Fuckin' right! That's creepy as balls!" Todd nodded.
"Good. See to it you maintain that attitude and I think we'll have a very amicable partnership." Louise declared cordially.
Ethan was less than reassured. He looked around his shop and fervently began to wish he really had told the Princess to get the hell out, customer service be damned.
"Oh cheer up," Louise pronounced. She sported something that it took several seconds for Ethan to realize was supposed to be a smile. "You're about to be aiding in the pursuit of True Love."
She pronounced the last two words in such a fashion that Ethan almost saw the letters TM floating after them.
"I... Okay?"
"Don't worry, dear," The endearment came off more than a little scripted, "I'll take care of the particulars. All you have to do is sit back and stay out of the way. Who knows, you may even find it entertaining."
"I... But... Okay?"
"Good lad. Now then. I have a lot of business to attend to. We must get cracking as soon as possible, very eager to wrap this case up. That being said, how does tomorrow night, around nine o'clock fetch you?"
"For what?" Ethan asked numbly.
"Well the trial of course!" Louise exclaimed, "Honestly, do keep up."
"Uh, well, it is after close," Ethan reasoned lamely.
"Lovely. Works for both of us. Good to see you're becoming more agreeable." Louise flashed another dubious smile.
"I... Yeah, no problem," Ethan replied dazedly.
"Well, if that's all that sorted, I'll be on my way. You can expect the Dragon sometime around Eight, I expect."
"The... wait, what, seriously!?" Ethan exclaimed.
"Good day!" Louise replied brightly. There was a slight flash, a small sound like rushing air, and then she was gone.
He and Todd stood stock still for what must have been minutes. When Todd finally released his grip on Ethan's arm, he left sweaty fingerprints on his shirt.
"Dragon," Ethan muttered absently, "She said Dragon."
"And you said this shit doesn't happen here!" Todd replied with a faint laugh.
"Why Dragons? Why here? Why... Why me?" Ethan whispered. He looked to Todd frantically. "Did I like, murder someone and forget about it? Kick some kittens? How did my luck get this bad!?"
"Well, you did get this chick zonked," Todd chuckled, prodding the girl with his foot.
"Don't kick her! God, what do we do with her? We can't just leave her here," Ethan moaned. Looking at her, sprawled on the hard floor, he already felt a bit guilty he'd ignored her as long as he had.
"We could prop her up in the corner, tape her eyes open, scare the shit out of shoplifters."
"Todd!"
"Alright, dude, just kidding."
"It'll have to be the couch I guess," Ethan sighed, "Come on, help me move her."
Awkwardly, Ethan bent and slipped his hands under her arms, and Todd obligingly gathered up her legs. Lifting her, Ethan found she was actually rather light. He guessed that Todd could have lifted her on his own, but it would have hurt his pride to admit he himself likely couldn't. Together, they shuffled her into the living room.
"She's not really breathing, Eh?" Todd ventured quietly.
Ethan had noticed the same thing. She looked still as death, but her skin was warm, her face rosy. "Yeah... It's creepy," He grunted as he struggled.
"Fuckin' creepy," Todd echoed.
Gesturing with his head, Ethan guided Todd over to the low, green couch set flush against the stairwell. "I don't know if her heart's beating either," He said as they laid her down.
Todd looked down at her, shook his head. "Nope. Nope I don't think it is."
Ethan shuddered. "So creepy."
Todd nodded, then considered a moment more. "Hey so... Hopefully that means she doesn't have to pee, right?"
"Oh jeez. Oh wow that's gross but, yeah."
"Or eat. Or drink or anything..."
"God, where is that stupid Fairy Godperson when you need her?" Ethan hissed.
"More like Fairy Godbitch. What a cu-"
"Todd!"
"Country fried fool, as my grandma used to say," Todd recovered.
Ethan shot him a smirk, but looking down at the stranger on his couch, he began to get the sensation that he was sliding down a very steep ravine. In actuality, it was a feeling he'd had for a very long time now, but the pace of his descent had gotten markedly faster.
"Bro? You okay?" Todd ventured quietly.
Ethan looked up, aware he'd been staring into space. "Yeah… I mean, well no, but yeah."
"I hear you. Weird fuckin' day, right?"
"Yeah, no kidding," Ethan laughed softly.
They fell into silence again for a minute. Todd seemed to become aware of his surroundings all of a sudden.
"Hey. I just realized. I haven't been back here in like, years. Man, nothing's changed," He remarked.
"Yeah," Ethan replied vaguely. He knew Todd hadn't. No one had, except for a few well-wishing aunts, uncles, cousins, but even they'd stopped visiting months ago. The Princess was the first person to make use of the couch in ages. It always felt too big to sit on alone.
"So what now man?" Todd asked hesitantly.
Ethan shrugged. "I guess... We just close up. Go to bed, right?"
"That's it? You sure I can't do anything else?"
"No. Wait, yeah," Ethan considered, "Can you... Can you get rid of that stupid spinning wheel for me? Just wrap it in a tarp and stick it in storage or something?"
Todd gaped openly, "Wait, for real?"
Ethan nodded wearily, "Uh, yeah. If it's not too much trouble."
"Hell no! I'd cart that fucking thing to an active volcano if you asked me, bro! But, I mean, I thought you wanted to keep it around. Because of... You know..."
Ethan knew. Some part of it felt like a betrayal, even thinking about discarding it. It was a piece of his memories, something his mother had been fond of… But he HATED it. The thing had stretched his tolerance just by hulking in the corner, but now it seemed it was actively trying to spite him. No more. It had to go.
"Yeah, Todd. I knew I said we should keep it around but... Well that's before I knew the thing was a friggin' Princess trap.," He laughed.
Todd chuckled in return. "It was like a freaking predator man! Waitin' for nubile young Princesses to wander into its clutches. It was probably practicing on you all these years."
"I don't look like a Princess," Ethan pouted.
"Sure, whatever you say, bro." Todd laughed. Turning, he strode on his heel, whistling cheerfully.
Chapter 3
The store closed and the spinning wheel properly squared away, Todd left, and Ethan found himself alone in his silent house.
Well not quite alone.
Standing in the living room, he caught himself staring at the Princess again. It was embarrassing, but in truth it was hard not to. Not because of her extraordinary beauty, though that was a factor, but because Ethan couldn't shake the eerie, unnatural sensation she engendered in him. His eyes fixed on her hair. It seemed... Longer somehow. He could have sworn it was just an inch when she'd walked in, but now it seemed long enough to brush her earlobes. That was impossible right?
Confounded, he let it go. He'd already been through at least four or five things he thought impossible today. What was a few extra inches of hair compared to a half-dead girl on your couch?
Wearily, he fixed himself a haphazard supper before wandering off to his bed. Slowly, he went through his morning ritual in reverse, struggling with the knot on his apron, shuffling off his shoes, combing his hair, culminating with a brief, despondent look in the mirror. Finally, he threw himself down on his bed.
Ethan's nerves were frazzled, his mind racing, but the benefit of a long day of hard work was that it was nearly impossible to suffer insomnia. Ethan had never once in his life had trouble falling asleep, and tonight was no exception.
It began the same way.
He glided into the living room, drenched with light, radiant, warm.
He headed for the doorway, eager, hopeful.
He heard their voices. Thunder and birdsong. So close and so familiar it made his heart bleed.
He reached out a hand for the doorknob and...
Suddenly, discordantly, the door flew open. A small figure pushed its way through it, walking so briskly they bumped into Ethan's chest, giving a small squeak of surprise. Baffled, Ethan looked down.
It was her.
The Princess, in all her uncanny glory. She stared up at him with her vivid blue eyes, her honey hair cropped short over her brow. Ethan stared, open mouthed at her for a long minute, his bleary mind scrabbling to understand.
"Y-you!?" He exclaimed at length.
The girl scowled up at him. Roughly, she pushed him backwards a few steps, shutting the door behind her. "Hey, douche," She replied scathingly.
Ethan tried once or twice to speak, but words wouldn't come. He grasped at his hair, frustration, panic, confusion all battling in his chest.
"What are you doing here!?" He cried, when his voice finally decided to show up.
She shrugged, avoiding his eyes. "I got bored I guess. Saw this was open. Decided to snoop."
"But... What!? How are you here, you... you're unconscious on my couch!"
The girl rolled her eyes. "Yeah. Which is why I'm stranded in fucking dreamland, isn't it?"
"D-Dreamland?"
"Limbo, purgatory, the veil, whatever you want to call it. I got bored cruising around in the dark, figured I'd come crash this dream. I didn't know it was yours," She said with a note of disgust.
"A... a dream," Ethan murmured dazedly.
Suddenly, he heard it again, the bass rumble of his father's laugh. It drew him like a magnet. Instinctively, he tried to shift around the girl, but she noticed his maneuver and leaned against the door, arms crossed.
"Move," Ethan demanded.
"Yeah, I'm not done talking to you," The girl snorted.
Ethan began to feel frantic. "You need to move."
"Why?"
"Because I need to be out there! Move!"
"You don't need to be anywhere, it's a dream," She dismissed with another roll of her eyes.
"Move!"
"So have you tried to kiss me yet?" The girl replied, her voice casual, but her glance cutting.
Ethan paused, becoming aware that his breathing was galloping away from him. "W-What?"
"Well, you were hitting on me before. I figured you probably tried to get lucky right?"
Ethan could feel himself flush scarlet, though from indignation or humiliation he didn't know. "I was NOT hitting on you, I was... offering assistance. And no, I don't kiss girls in comas, but y'know, thanks for assuming!"
"Oh, seriously! You expect me to believe you didn't try to cop a feel!" The girl shot back. There was a ragged edge to her voice, something verging on tears, but Ethan barely noticed through his rage.
"No! Jesus, no!" He shouted, throwing up his hands.
"I know how it is! You get a pretty Princess in your shop, she passes out, is totally at your mercy. Figured I was public property anyhow!? Thought it was your lucky day!?"
Even high and screaming her voice was aggravatingly lovely. Her flushed face and teary eyes were still picturesquely perfect. It only threw fuel on Ethan's anger.
"LUCKY!?" He roared. A few tight, hysterical laughs bubbled out of his chest. "LUCKY!? You think it's LUCKY when a stranger passes out in your store!? You think it's LUCKY when some psychopathic fairy-lawyer from hell tells you she can do whatever she likes with your home!? You think it's LUCKY when... when everything you love could be burned to the ground tomorrow!? Is THAT your idea of LUCKY!?" Ethan buried his face in his hands, and took a few, sharp breaths before continuing. "I didn't ask for this! I didn't ask for you, or your curse, or any of this... So just... God, will you please just leave me alone and get out of the way?"
He looked at her face for the first time since he'd begun his tirade. She stared back, wide eyed, lips pursed. Her bitterness was gone, but she still remained frozen in place.
"Why do you want to get back there so bad?" She asked in a small, blank voice. "It's just your storefront. It's barely even different from when I saw it."
Ethan's patience had dissolved. Roughly, he pushed her arm aside, grasped for the doorknob.
"I need to see them," He answered flatly.
"See who?" She still stood stubbornly in the way. Ethan turned the knob, tried to prop it open.
"My parents," Ethan continued, an edge of desperation entering his voice.
"But it's just a dream-"
"I need to see them before they disappear!" Ethan cried, wrenching at the door.
He heard the girl give a small gasp, and suddenly she sprang away from the door. Ethan flung it open, heart beating wild with anticipation, but...
There was nothing.
The doorway opened into darkness. A complete and unending void.
"I... What... What happened?" Ethan whispered.
He reached out a tentative hand, pawed at the abyss beyond. He felt only dry, empty cold meeting his touch.
"They... They're gone. It's gone. Everything's gone," He intoned.
"It's just a dream," Came the girl's voice, meek, soft.
"They're gone," Ethan repeated, choking over the last syllable.
Ethan slowly backed away from the door, shut it. The endless blackness was more than he could bear. He felt tears gathering in the corners of his eyes, and shakily raised his hand to cover them. He stood in silence for what must have been a very long time, grappling with the void that swelled inside him, the echo to that dark and empty doorway.
"They aren't gone forever," The girl chimed in.
Ethan took a quick, gulping breath. "Yeah. Yeah they are," He replied thickly.
The girl didn't reply, but her silence was answer enough.
There was another long pause, as Ethan tried to collect himself, tried to just breathe. Eventually though, he couldn't ignore the feel of the girl's eyes on him. Wearily, he straightened up, turned to face her.
"What do you-"
"I'm sorry!" She blurted.
Ethan blinked.
"What?"
"I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry!" She cried. Perfect, crystalline tears began to roll down her cheeks, and Ethan dimly considered that it was almost unfair how prettily flushed her face was, compared to his doubtlessly blotchy, red eyed one. "I'm sorry about your house and your shop, and your parents... I'm sorry I was such a fucking bitch back there... I just... Oh god, I'm really, really sorry about everything!" She sobbed.
Ethan found himself in the odd position of immediately feeling guilty. Instantly all his rage and pain were forgotten as he scrambled for a way to make things right.
"Hey, no, it's okay. It's alright. I, uh... I don't mind." He stammered.
She gave a small, tinkling laugh, between gasping breaths. "You don't mind? I've fucked up your life!" She exclaimed.
"No, I mean... Kind of. But it's not your fault, and I mean... I'm sorry?"
She gave another, louder laugh. "You're sorry? Wow, Jesus, why on earth are you sorry?"
Ethan paused, trying to puzzle out an answer, brow furrowed.
"Uh, I'm sorry... that you're sorry?" He ventured.
The girl laughed again, and suddenly, like sun peeking out from behind clouds, something new, something genuine slipped out. Her laugh started musically, but a surprising, brash note snuck in, and then a small snort. It was jarring, but oddly refreshing. Ethan found himself smiling without exactly knowing why.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to laugh at you." She began, misinterpreting Ethan's curious stare, "It's just... You really don't like crying people, do you?"
Ethan returned with a laugh of his own. "No, they kind of freak me out."
The girl smiled, and sniffling, began to swipe away her tears. "Sorry. I just... I really am sorry. About everything."
"Noted," Ethan replied with a smile.
She sighed, and the two of them regarded each other for a suddenly painfully awkward minute. Ethan cast about for what one said to a half-dead dream Princess. A question leapt into his head and he couldn't stop himself from asking it.
"Do you eat?" He blurted.
"What?" The girl looked up at him, smiling bemusedly.
"I mean, like... If you don't eat, in the real world, will you die? I should have asked the fairy god-lady or whatever but-"
"Oh. Oh no. I don't. I don't need water or anything. It's like... Magic stasis? I should be fine."
"Oh, okay, thank god. That... that would have been weird."
They both paused for a moment, no doubt musing over the undignified scenario of trying to feed a passed-out stranger. Ethan tried to push it out of his mind. He cleared his throat uncomfortably.
"Well anyhow, uh, your body is good - I mean it's okay! It's fine. It's uh, on my couch," He supplied.
"Oh, yeah, thanks. That's nice," The girl replied hurriedly, "One of... one of these?" She queried, pointing around the room.
"What? Oh! Yeah... uh, that one." Ethan answered, gesturing.
"Huh." The girl crossed over to the couch in question. Stiffly, she sat, bounced on it a few times. "Seems comfy enough. Thanks," She added with a smile.
"Yeah, no problem," Ethan smiled back nervously. Hesitant, but feeling gawky standing over her, he crossed to the couch and sat as well, taking care to seat himself on the far opposite side. "I mean. It's not exactly... uh... fit for a Princess or anything," He muttered.
The girl gave a loud snort of derision, another strange, fascinating slip of her veneer. "I would sleep on the lumpiest couches on earth if I could stop being a fucking Princess."
Ethan smiled at her nervously. "What, seriously?"
The girl nodded, her shoulders slumped. "Yeah, seriously."
"But I mean... I thought being a Princess was every girl's dream?"
The girl gave a small, bitter laugh. "Yeah, I guess. I mean, for some girls it must be. I've seen ones that seem happy enough. I mean, money, fame, a handsome husband... It sounds pretty great. Maybe I'm weird for thinking it's not, but... Jesus, it's not."
"What do you mean?"
"What do I mean!? I mean it's... It's... It's a trap, you know? It's a perversion, it's a violation, it's... It's a fucking nightmare."
"A violation?" Ethan gulped.
The girl nodded vigorously. "Yeah, you have no idea. I mean... Where do I start?" She looked down at her hands, folded in her lap, and seemed to be struck with inspiration. "Okay," She said, holding them up, "First of all. This isn't me."
"Oooo...kay?"
"This, all this," She pressed, circling her finger around her face, "This isn't what I look like. I was made to look like this."
"How do you mean... you used to look different?"
The girl nodded. "My mom tells me that when I was born, I looked like her. I had freckles, and a bigger mouth, and a different nose... But then the fucking godpeople came." She sighed.
"The fairy ones?"
"Yeah, those ones. So... Okay, you know how Princesses used to be a monarchy thing?" She enquired.
"Uh, yeah, vaguely," Ethan nodded.
"Well now it's just a random thing. Maybe because of the march of democracy or something, I don't know. All I do know, is that one day, a few months after you're born, fairy godparents just zap themselves into your fucking nursery and decide you're a Prince or a Princess. There's nothing your parents can do, nothing anybody can do, they just decide it, and that's that."
"So... just for giggles? Why do they pick who they pick?"
"I don't know. I think they have some reasoning behind it... I mean, they're like magical lawyers, you're right, they've got all these rules and regulations, they've got to have a reason, but... I don't know. Anyhow. So they decide you're a Princess and then you get blessed."
"Blessed?"
"Uh huh. You get some kind of special gift. Three of them usually. So Princes get stuff like Courage, or Strength, or Dashing, or something like that. With Princesses though, it's junk like Grace, or Poise, or Good Posture."
"That last one sounds annoying," Ethan observed.
"I know, right? At least I didn't get saddled with that one," She laughed, gesturing at her slumped frame, "And of course they're never anything useful. I could be happy with, like, Good at Math, or Tells Good Jokes or... I dunno... Remembers Birthdays Really Well."
"Talented Beekeeper," Ethan offered.
Another laugh, another slipped note. Ethan smiled.
"Yeah, why not? Anything like that. But no. Useless bullshit. And then with Princesses, one of the gifts is always Beauty." She sighed bitterly.
"Seems kinda... subjective," Ethan muttered.
"Yeah, well not to the Godparents, apparently. When a girl is gifted with Beauty, she doesn't just become a prettier version of herself, or just stays the same and everyone thinks she's beautiful... She actually physically changes. I changed. I used to look different. I used to look like my mom. Now... Now I don't know how I really look anymore. I just look like what the Godparents think is beautiful. Like... like the most baseline kind of beauty they could come up with."
"Wait... So your face-"
"Not my face. Not my original one at least."
"And your eyes?"
"Not blue. Mom thinks they might have been Hazel... I don't know." She shrugged defeatedly.
"Oh man, that's a relief!" Ethan blurted.
The girl looked at him, startled. "A relief?"
"Well, yeah, I mean..." Ethan stammered, "I just... There was something odd about you, and it was kinda freaking me out - Not that you're freaky, it's just... You looked... Uh, a little... off?"
She stared at Ethan, face unreadable. "You don't like the way I look?" She asked flatly.
"Yes! I mean no - well wait not no, but..." Ethan could almost hear the sound of a shovel pitching dirt out of his grave.
"It's okay, seriously, do you?"
Ethan gave a small, high laugh. "Uh... Well, I mean yeah, you look pretty... and everything... but it's kind of... Uh... boring? Oh wow, that came out wrong. Just not... Interesting. Wow, still wrong!"
"No no, it's okay!" She replied. Ethan was flabbergasted to find her smiling.
"I-I like your hair though. The cut I mean," He offered.
"Oh," Her smile grew, "Thanks. I cut it myself. Every day."
"Wait, what?"
"Yeah. Turns out when they make you beautiful, they want you to stay beautiful, according to their standards. So, wounds don't scar, piercings fuse up, tattoo ink beads up and falls off. And your hair just grows and grows and fucking grows."
"Holy cow, that's weird," Ethan breathed.
"Right!?" She exclaimed. "I once tried to put on purple lipstick and it melted in the tube! Doesn't do that with pink or light red. Such bullshit."
"So, you cut your hair and wear uh, Un-Princessey clothes because..."
"Because it's the only way I can be myself," She murmured quietly.
Ethan was silent for a moment. He looked at the beautiful face that wasn't hers and saw a sorrow beneath it that she seemed to own all too much.
"Jeez, that sounds... Bogus," He offered lamely.
She laughed. "Understatement of the year, but yeah. But I mean, that's not really the worst of it. Not by a longshot."
"Oh?" Ethan ventured.
"It's not enough to take your identity, they fucking own your life. From the moment you're Princessified, you belong to them. You don't get to choose where you live, where you go to school, what you want to do with your life. No, you're as good as a slave from that point on."
"Seriously?"
The girl nodded. "On your fourteenth birthday, right? The godparents show up, and give you a Curse. Something to begin your trials. Maybe you bite a bad apple, maybe you run into a vindictive goblin, maybe you drop candle wax on a bear..."
"What?"
"Don't ask. Anyhow, they give you this curse to hang over your head for the rest of your life. Once it gets activated, you're locked in. The contest for your hand starts, and congratulations, you've lost any control you had over your life. You're just fucking Prince bait from then on."
"Okay, wait, but... Why? I've been thinking this since you passed out on my floor... Why? Why bother, why all the trouble and magic and rules? Why marry off Princesses? What's the point?"
"I don't know. It seems insane, right? All this pageantry. They practically devote themselves to forcing this weird routine... Again, I mean... there's gotta be a reason. If you ask them they'll tell you it's all about True Love."
"Trademark," Ethan added absently.
"Oh my god, you got that too!?" The girl exclaimed. "It's like they own the patent on Tru Wuv or something. So fucking annoying. It's always True Love this, and True Love that. Which is bullshit. I mean, my parents met when they were in college. They both liked bad horror movies and jazz music. They traveled the world together on like, five bucks and a prayer. Dad proposed with a twist tie ring. That... That seems like True Love to me. I don't get any of that. I can't even date!"
"At all?" Ethan asked, very conscious of trying to sound casual.
"Nope. Do you know what happens if you try to kiss a Princess if you aren't a Prince?"
"No. I get the feeling it's ominous though."
"You get turned into a frog. No fucking kidding. An actual frog. One of my childhood friends found that out the hard way, got an inch away from my lips and suddenly he's hopping. I cried for like, six days before the godparents showed up and changed him back." She'd begun to talk very fast, her face flushed. Ethan began to get the sensation that she'd forgotten she was even talking to anyone else. "If anyone tried to cop a feel, my clothes go all rigid. Like steel. No matter what I wear. They refuse to come off. For like, an hour. You know how hard that makes doctor's visits? Even though Princesses never really get sick... And even when I'm naked? Anyone who comes within eyeshot is left blind and paralyzed, and it doesn't wear off until I put clothes on!"
Ethan gulped, his face burning. "Uhhhh...."
"Because GOD FORBID anyone take my chastity! No! Gotta save that for our Princes! Gotta be pure, and demure, and fucking CHASTE. I'm twenty two years old dude, and I still haven't lost my...!"
She trailed off. Ethan heard her breath go out in a little dwindling squeak. He felt her eyes on the side of his head, but he stared devoutly at the floorboards.
They sat. They fidgeted. Ethan coughed twice.
Eventually, Ethan couldn't resist sneaking a look at her face. She looked embarrassed, yes. But also a little... Worn down. A little defeated. And more than a little scared.
"Hey," Ethan said quietly, breaking the silence, "I'm, uh... Sorry. About this. That all sounds really, really awful."
She looked up, a small smile tracing her face.
"I'm sorry about your hair," He continued, "And your life, and, uh, you know... your chastity." He finished with a slight break of his voice.
She burst into giggles, and Ethan was strangely delighted to hear her little snort crop up again. He found himself grinning.
"Thanks." She replied once she'd caught her breath. "And I'm sorry too. About all the stupid shit I said, and your shop, and all the trouble I've caused," She paused, looked towards the door, "And, um... Sorry about your parents."
Ethan's smile disappeared. "Why are you sorry about that? You didn't even know them."
"Yeah, but I mean... They're gone, right?" She asked quietly.
Ethan closed his eyes. Nodded.
"And that sucks, right?"
He nodded again.
"So... I'm sorry. And I'm really sorry I stopped you from seeing them," She added, her voice heavy with sincerity.
Ethan gave her a weak smile. "Don't worry about it. It's just a dream, right?"
Another moment's silence. This time broken by the girl.
"Hey. What's your name?"
Ethan looked up, smiled wryly. "Oh. I'm Ethan. Ethan Green."
The girl smirked, a strangely incongruent expression on a Princess's face.
"Green? You own a Grocer's and your name is-?"
"Yeah yeah, hilarious right? Trust me, you haven't said anything my friend hasn't already. Repeatedly," Ethan replied with a sigh.
"Sorry," She giggled, "Uh. Well, my name's Penny."
"Penny," Ethan repeated, trying it out, "Penny what?"
She blushed. "Uh, Pierce," She mumbled.
Ethan laughed. "So wait, you're-?"
"Princess Penny Pierce." She groaned.
"Oh wow." Ethan chuckled, "And you thought my name was funny?"
"Would you believe I knew a girl whose last name was Prince? The godpeople referred to her as Princess Prince. Confused the hell out of everyone."
Both she and Ethan began to laugh, and kept laughing for longer than was truly warranted for such a small comment. They'd start to calm down, and then glance at each other and be set off all over again. On some level, Ethan understood that this was because they'd both reached a point in their stress and strangeness where they could either laugh, or cry. Laughter just seemed like the more enjoyable option.
As Ethan's giggles subsided, he looked at Penny, and suddenly saw in her... a person.
He'd seen a Pretty Girl at first, and then a Princess, and then a Pain in the Ass, but now, she was just a Person, and like that, all his awkwardness dissolved.
"Well," He smiled, extending a hand, "It's nice to meet you, Penny Pierce," He said, purposely omitting the Princess part.
She grinned back, and Ethan thought there was something fantastically crooked about it this time. "Yeah, nice to meet you too, Ethan Green," She replied sincerely.
She stretched out her hand to meet his. He felt her fingertips brush his palm.
And then everything was tangled blankets and screaming alarms.

Twisted wonderland Fear and hunger Au
Azul time !!

Azul Ashengrotto, The mafia man, he is dressed in a business suit with his hair half-gelled back . His cane can double as a weapon in combat if attacked by the player.
Azul moonschorching
Greed

Azul grew up in a small coastal town. Othered from his peers, Azul struggled to find a place where he belonged. That was until he was approached by The Family. They offered him power, protection, and comradery. Everything that he lacked. Over the years he amassed great wealth and power. But it wasn't enough. As his wealth grew he desired more and more now that he had everything he lacked. The family was demanding, however. Azuls life was constantly filled with tasks given to him by the family. His time with them forced him to do things he never would have wanted to do. The family cultivated his talents and he became a successful businessman. As such he was also tasked with handling Other business endeavors for the family. His main and longest-running task was securing trade and business relations with the Kingscholar family.
It had been going well until their younger son found out about Azul's little business deal with the Kingscholars. The younger son fled and Azul thought that his job was done but when he reported back to the head of the family he was furious. Since that day azul has been tasked with tracking down the son to “ repay the family for their kindness” and “ take care” of him. The family held everything over his head. His wealth, his life, his family, everything. Everything the family gave him was to be slowly stripped away from him till he took care of the son. It had been years but finally he was able to get a lead on where the kingscholar son was heading towards. He and his associate boarded the train headed to Prehivil following in his footsteps.
Greed is a manifestation of Azul’s desires and what he fears he has become due to his time with the mafia. A warped hunching form , Greed grasps at whatever is left of the life he has built for himself.
Greeds design is inspired by Azul’s overblot form in the sense of his form being an 8 limbed hand octopus. It holds up Azul’s head like a prized pearl . Azul's backstory and moonschorching was loosely inspired by Caligura and Marcoh . similarly azul will ambush the player if they play as leona and demand answers and attack him .
Unlike Caligura, Azul will not ambush any other character .
Azul will moonschorch on the afternoon of day 2 if the player fails to intervene with an interaction between azul and leona.
Greed can be found creeping around the sewers crawling towards its next victim .
In combat, Greed has a coin flip grappling mechanic where if the player fails the coin flip a Chagunar head grasp will occur causing an instantaneous game over. Wielding no weapon initially greed attacks with non-slashing attacks first. he carries a unique ability to steal items and weapons during combat and render your party defenseless If not defeated after 3 turns of combat greed will find a trident amongst the filth and can now attack with slashing damage that inflicts an infection. However, once the trident is wielded it will no longer be able to use the coin flip grasp insta kill. To balance the fight greed can be easily blinded and has a lower hp.
If Greed isn't killed before day 3 and Leona was prevented from moonschorching or isn't within your party, greed will track down and kill leona before tracking down the player. If Leona is within the party and greed manifests but isn't killed before night day 3 then Greed will track down and encounter the player.
If the player defeats greed they will have to search the body to retrieve any stolen items. If the body is not searched before it is decapitated the player will be unable to retrieve the items. Once the head of greed is decapitated the body will dissolve into seafoam and disappear.

Logan should have been the key to healing Charles' broken heart in dofp.
(In a non-ship way)
While it gave us the great scene of Charles talking to himself, I hate that that was the answer in dofp. I argue that Logan actually was the "right guy" to help Charles right then.
Charles was broken in dofp because of heart break. At the core of the X-Men Charles is offering love, family, and home to people in need of it. And in dofp his first two attempts at that have failed spectacularly.
With Raven he felt he had a sister, fully and without qualification. They were siblings and he loved her and the mansion was their home. But she leaves and casually informs him it was never her home and he was so very easy for her to leave behind. She was his sister since he was 12 and in the 20 years between First Class and Dark Phoenix he sees her twice.
With Erik the cut was even deeper. As with her, he found someone wounded and immediately bonded to him. Here was someone who had been abused horrifically, was elbow deep in blood, seeing only rage and pain in himself, surviving but not living. And Charles saw his heart and offered him love and a home. As with Raven, he said "You're wonderful. I'll love you and we'll be family and this will be your home."
And Erik threw him away.
Charles can't hope anymore. His heartbreak is a devastating blow to a telepath.
Now we have Logan. Logan originally came to Charles a wounded man. Abused, elbow deep in blood, seeing only rage and pain in himself, surviving but not living, but with a good heart. He's the perfect mirror to Erik but when Charles offered him home and family, Logan stayed. And stayed and stayed.
As cherik shippers we focus on Erik being at Charles' side in the dark future, but so is Logan. At the end Charles is flanked by them both. One in front and one behind. Charles doesn't leave the plane till Storm and Logan have stepped out first. They're being hunted by machines and Charles is a telepath in a wheelchair. He is utterly vulnerable and helpless against this foe. Logan is there in the position of a bodyguard. In the movie "Logan" they expand even further into this dynamic and as someone who's been there, I cannot fully express the depth of love and devotion that would be necessary to do what Logan does for Charles in that movie. Caring for a loved one with dementia and mobility issues is hard. And ugly. But Logan is still holding on to Charles. This is his family and he's not letting go.
Erik and Raven threw Charles away, and we know from DP that Hank does as well in this timeline. But in Logan all Charles' love is reciprocated. And through Logan's memories Charles could see the school he builds. All his X-Men. His family.
Without his powers Charles has no idea of any of this. Logan is just some dude who showed up and said "I'm from the future. Grab your coat, we gotta break your ex out of prison and save the world." When Logan offers up his mind to him is when Charles could finally see that the future he's building will be good. His love WILL be reciprocated. His future self just telling him "You'll suffer and that's good because you can use it to help people" isn't enough. That's the opposite of hope, that's literally radical acceptance: a coping mechanism for when there is zero hope.
But! If you change that scene just a bit. Now Logan is certain that he's the problem. He readily admits to Charles that he's not the guy. He's totally wrong. It was meant to be Charles that went back, but they're stuck with him. Logan intends to send Charles to himself but Charles' powers are barely firing. He stumbles on to Logan's pain and recoils. Logan encourages him again and now he's looking forward but instead of jumping right to the target, he's wary after the hit of pain. He has to make his way there gradually. He sees his school. He sees his found family. It's all through Logan's perception so he feels how Logan came there, sees the clear mirroring to Erik, sees that this time his faith was rewarded, feels Logan's trust and love. Sees that when it all falls apart Logan is still there as are so many of his X-Men, that their family bonds are ironclad.
Then, and only then, he meets his older self. And yes, his powers hurt. Yes he will naturally draw to him the most wounded of people. But (and this is an important but) the payoff is that these people are wonderful and they love him. It's not all pain for the sake of others, he also gets happiness. He gets a home full of family and children and hope. His empty mansion that once held only pain and abuse and loneliness is now a true home.
All his older self offered to him was a future of self sacrifice. Logan could have offered him a future of family. Logan was the key to healing Charles' broken heart.

Code Blue
Summary; The aftermath leaves Y/N second guessing everything in her life. Losing friends and witnessing her boyfriend of two years getting closer to his ex is enough to push her over the edge. Will they be able to pull themselves out of this hole that’s darker than the Upside Down itself? (For the sake of this fic, what happened at the end of the last episode of season 4 hasn’t yet happened)
Warnings; usual Stranger Things, things. Swearing, blood, injury, alcohol consumption, mentions of death and suicidal thoughts. If any of this is triggering, please don’t read.
A/N; I haven’t written anything in so long! It’s a long fic! 6.5K words, my longest on here yet. I apologise if this is bad, I’ve just been in a writing mood so thought I’d let out a lot of angst and fluff (we love it) I am a British writer (England) so sorry if things don’t make sense to you! Thank you for stopping by, hopefully my writing streak stays strong. Requests are always open. Love to all xoxo
The aftermath of the supposed earthquake had everyone second guessing. Some people left, other people were packing to leave. Having known what really went down, you sat in silence staring into your vanity mirror as everyone else you knew went to help the community at Hawkins High.
You just couldn’t stomach it. Cuts and grazes over your skin, tiredness evident in your eyes, your hair still clumped with dirt from the Upside Down, dried blood. You hadn’t even showered yet. You didn’t know how to process anything that had happened over the past 72 hours. You were accustomed to this kind of thing having it been a big part of your life for the past few years, the most recent battle however, took the biscuit.
Small Polaroid pictures littered around the back wall of your desk. Smiles, memories, better times. Max and Dustin when she stole his cap. They were in mid laugh so it was blurred a bit, but a happy memory that was stuck in time. That same Max was now in hospital, fractured bones, blind, unresponsive. Not laughing and joking with her friends, not happy, not anything. Doctors didn’t know if she’d ever wake. She was such a selfless soul, way beyond her years, but still so young. Too young. You all were.
Pictures of the group, you and your boyfriend Steve. A picture of you and Eddie during a D&D game. His hair all over the place, tongue sticking out, you laughing, Dustin in the background pulling a stupid face.
Memories.
Eddie.
Your best friend.
Gone.
Just like that.
He didn’t run this time, and fuck. You really wished he did.
The tick of your small clock dragged you away from the pictures, the light ticking mocking you, “shut up! Shut the fuck up!” you screamed from deep in your lungs, a howl so painful from your chest, putting what was left of your strength and upset from the past few weeks into knocking the blasted thing to the floor, hearing the glass and mechanics hit the floor in one swoop. It was a gift from Eddie one Christmas as you were pretty much always late. Bittersweet.
Guilt built in your stomach as you stood up fast, pushing your stool back with your legs, failing to the floor, cupping the bits of broken glass as sobs wracked your body, not realising your hands were clenched around the shards, the all too familiar claret running through the lines in your palm and down your fingers, dripping into a pool on the wooden flooring of the bedroom.
Your breathing hitched as you remembered Eddie die in your arms, the way blood trickled from his mouth. The look of pure terror on his face. He knew he was dying, but he kept it together till the very end for the sake of you and Dustin. His best friends, the people that were there for him no matter what everyone else was saying. You didn’t want to believe it. Dustin’s screams and sobs as the light left his eyes. You saw them gloss over. The way you both shook him, screamed into his ear, telling him not to leave you both behind. Your hands covered in blood. His blood.
Dropping the bits of glass on the floor, you pushed your feet and newly cut hands against the floor, the small slitters of glass that were still on your palm slicing deeper into your flesh until your back met the wall, your hands and body shaking, the tightness in your chest getting worse and you struggled to fill your lungs with air. You felt like you were about to pass out.
The past 72 hours had been, by far, the worst time of your life. You’d witnessed what you thought was your boyfriend of two years get closer to his ex, eyes can be deceiving, but there was something in his own eyes that glimmered whenever he spoke to Nancy, deep down you always wondered what Steve saw in you. Maybe you were just a knock off version of Nancy. Someone to keep him grounded in all of this. A warm body to forget all the wrongdoing in the world. Someone he knew cared about him. Perhaps more than he cared for you. You didn’t know that of course, it was just what your mind was telling you.
Your best friend had died for a town that hated him, Max, the girl who had adopted you as a cooler older sister after Billie died was lying in a hospital bed with the looming same fate, Vecna was still out there somewhere and you were sure there was even more danger on the horizon.
Even after everything that happened, your mum hadn’t bothered coming home. She was always away with her new man for weeks on end. She had called up one night before the phone lines cut out to make sure the house was still standing after witnessing the news, but other than that all you got was, ‘with everything that’s happened in Hawkins, I’m going to stay with carl for another few weeks, maybe more. Be careful out there.’”
You’d never felt more alone. You didn’t blame your friends or Steve. They wanted to help out, of course they did. You did too, but you were in no way the right frame of mind to be seeing people crying for their loved ones, talking to people that had lost others whilst you were reeling from losing your own.
You pulled yourself off the floor with great difficulty. It felt like you had a ton of bricks weighed down on you. Metaphorically speaking, you did. Though it wasn’t bricks, it was the weight of hurt and anger, of death piling up one by one. “Get yourself together Y/N. get your fucking self together.” Rummaging through your dresser, careful not to get blood on everything, you pulled out some comfortable lounge clothes that were bigger in size, purposely avoiding one of Steve’s t-shirts as you dragged yourself to the bathroom.
Putting down the toilet seat, you placed your clothes and rinsed your hands under the cold tap. Water on open cuts made you wince, but at least you felt something other than emotional pain. Watching your fresh blood mix with water and into the sink like a mini whirlpool was almost mesmerising. Picking out the last few shards of glass making the water redder with each bit. You were lucky water was still running. There were some parts of Hawkins that had no water.
Turning the dial on the shower you undressed. Peeling your clothes from your skin. Clothes you wouldn’t bother to wash. They would go straight in the bin. You had enough awful reminders on that night, you didn’t need more. Stepping into the shower, careful not to slip, you submerged yourself in warm, running water and closed your eyes, feeling old blood, mud and debris leave your tired body.
Steve had come home early, with both of your parents almost always being away you basically lived with each other. When your mum was away, he’d stay with you and if his parents were away, you’d stay with him. He had his own keys to your place, and you had your own to his.
Steve kicked his shoes off in the hallway, tiredness in his bones. The house was silent apart from the sound of water from the shower, you were at least out of bed. When Steve left this morning you were curled up in a ball with covers over your head, blocking out the world. He leant down and burrowed his head in your blankets kissing the top of your head, saying how much he loved you and that he’d be back as soon as he’d helped out in Hawkins High, with a running car it was easier for him to pick up robin and bundle Dustin, Will and Mike in the back of along with all the supplies, it was a squeeze, but not a long drive and with everything that had happened, the kids didn’t mind being on top of each other, breathing, alive. In truth, Steve didn’t want to get out of bed either. His temples ached, his bones felt heavy and the wounds he had were still throbbing, not letting him forget about the events.
He sighed and flopped onto the sofa, leaning his head back hoping to get the knots out of the muscles in his neck, tension. He didn’t want to disturb you in the shower, even though all he wanted to do was bury his face in your hair, your skin, breathe in the only place he felt safe, the only thing that made sense to him. Seeing everyone at Hawkins High, the missing persons post filled with faces he knew, faces he didn’t, the heartbreak of all of Hawkins. All he wanted was you, but instead he just sat there.
You pressed your head against the cool tiles in the bathroom as you turned off the shower, the familiar car engine shutting off in the drive, you knew Steve was back, yet you didn’t think you could see him face to face yet. You breathed out heavily and stepped out of the shower pulling a towel from the back of the door, wrapping it around yourself and another for your hair. Red staining the white cotton as you’d opened old wounds as well as your still bleeding palms that stung. You bent down to get the first aid kit from under the sink as you got to work on your wounds. You at least looked cleaner, your split lip and eyebrow not looking as bad now you’d washed, half of these injuries you didn’t even know when you’d got them, from fighting demobats to being thrown across the floor by Eddie when you tried to help, bruises from being pulled away from your friend as his lifeless body lay motionless, wounds from yourself from hitting the wall in desperation. You looked how you felt. Completely broken. You wrapped bandages around your hands and left it at that. Drying off and throwing oversized clothes on, you reached for the door handle, your hand visibly shaking.
Going back into your room you sighed at the mess. Somewhat thankful that Steve had stayed downstairs. Glass and blood everywhere. You grabbed a dustpan and a brush from a small closet next to the bathroom as well as the small towel you used for your hair, sweeping up the small shards of glass and discarding them in a small bin next to your bed. Wiping the claret up with the small towel and putting that in the bin too. You sat on the end of your bed once again staring at the pictures behind your vanity desk.
“Y/N?” Steve called up the stairs noting that the shower had been turned off for a while, worry lacing his voice. You could hear it.
“Yeah, I’m coming down.” You stood up and dragged yourself to the top of the landing. You could just throw yourself down the stairs and hope for the best. Hope you’d have an ounce of peace from your racing mind, but you couldn’t do that. You couldn’t bring yourself to take yourself over that edge, to make the people that cared about you lose another. You’d all lost too much. Begrudgingly you walked down the stairs, the illuminating light from the sun almost blinding you, you’d been living in darkness for the past few days, being in the Upside Down and then closing all the curtains upstairs as soon as you’d got back home. You’d almost forgotten how bright daylight could be.
Steve was waiting in the kitchen for you, his eyes visibly glowing when you walked into the room, as though you lit up the small space when you stepped in. A smile tugged on your lips that suddenly dropped when you remembered he was looking at Nancy exactly the same not too long ago. The same nagging thoughts you had earlier pulling you back. Knock off version of Nancy. Now that Johnathan was back, of course he came running back to you. Steve looked down to your hands and frowned, he didn’t remember you hurting your hands so much they needed bandaging,
“Sweetheart? What happened?” Steve was by your side in an instant his hands gently over yours as he inspects the bandages,
“I dropped some glass, not a big deal. Just got a little cut up in the process of cleaning it up.” You lied through your teeth, you couldn’t be bothered to talk about Eddie again and how you’d broken the last gift he would ever give to you out of anger. Steve continued to look at your hands, careful not to disturb the bandages around them,
“Do you want me to have a look? I can bandage these a bit better for you, make sure there’s no glass and...” you cut him off with a, ‘I’m fine.’ And pulled your hands away from his warmth, Steve looked a little deflated, but understood. All of you had patched each other up countless times that it was almost routine now, you’d learnt how to stitch wounds, what ointments and antiseptics to use, you basically had a mini pharmacy under your sink for things that people would never believe.
“Honestly, I’m fine Steve.” You forced a smile and went round the Kitchen Island feeling his eyes burning through you. Your house wasn’t the biggest, it was snug. The kitchen was weirdly one of the bigger rooms and probably the nicest, it was one of the only rooms your mum put any effort into before she started gallivanting around the globe. It was bright with several flowers littering the windowsills, yellow lace curtains to match some of the décor. How the flowers hadn’t died yet, you didn’t know. You never watered them.
You and the rest of the group had spent ample time in this kitchen cooking cookies and brownies for movie night, Max and Lucas always managing to burn popcorn, Steve rushing to open windows and flail a tea towel at the fire alarm to stop it beeping whilst Robin was toppling over laughing at Dustin with brownie mix all over his mouth, You’d also spent ample time in here with the older lot of the group, your mum had quite the alcohol stash. Probably enough to open a bar downtown. From several different bottles of vodka, gin, whiskey to wine, beer, cider and god knows what other potent liquid that did the job, which is exactly what you were heading for now.
Steve was slumped against one of the dining chairs as he watched you move around the island, he knew exactly what cabinet you were riffling through, “Ahhh, there it is.” You picked out an unopened bottle of vodka and put it on the side as you went through a different cupboard to pick out a decent glass.
“Do you really think that’s a good idea?” Steve sighed as he watched your every move, “I know things aren’t great at the minute, but we really need to pull together.” You opened the vodka and poured a small glass, turning around and leaning against the counter with your ankles crossed, the glass of vodka in your hand. You shrugged and took a gulp, the burning from the alcohol igniting your insides.
“Look, sweetheart, please.” Steve ran a hand through his hair, the lack of product evident, no one ever saw Steve walking around with no product in his hair, probably because without it, it was so fluffy and never sat in the right place according to him, “this isn’t the answer, that isn’t going to help. It’s not going to bring...”
“Shut up!” you screeched, smashing the glass back onto the counter, thankfully not breaking it, “you think I don’t know that, Steve? For goodness sake! How stupid do you think I am?!” Steve is taken aback, he’s over stepped a line and he knows it, “I know it’s not going to bring Eddie back it’s not going to stop what’s going on here,” you look around the room, “it’s not going to stop Max from being in hospital, it’s not going to stop those poor kids dreaming about what happened over and over again, how fucked they’re going to be in years’ time if they even make it that far, from losing countless people and battling these things over and over again, but maybe, just maybe it will stop my racing thoughts, the hurt, the anger, the resentment I have for this stupid fucking town for five goddamn minutes, okay?! everything is falling apart at the seams, we’ve all lost so much, I even thought you were getting cosy with Nancy again!” you bite your tongue getting caught up in the rift, Steve looked towards you bewildered. You turn back to the vodka bottle, filling your glass halfway, drinking it down like water and filling it up again, “I’m not asking you to understand Steve, I’m not even asking you to deal with this, you know where the fucking door is.”
Steve stood up from the table and walked over to you slowly, turning you to face him, moving the hair that had fallen so effortlessly over your features, “I love you Y/N, whatever you thought you saw between me and Nancy was not that. I’m happy for her and Johnathan, really. I’m so glad were now with the right people, the people who ground us and make this stupid crazy life worth living, you’re my muse. I would never do that to you, sweetheart. Not ever,” moving his hands over your covered arms, to your hands, holding them gently in his, “I’m not going anywhere Y/N, just please, I don’t want to lose you too. I can’t.”
You looked Steve dead in the eyes, his glassed over, tears threatening to fall. The beautiful honey eyes you’d got lost in time and time again, “Maybe you already have.” His hands let go of yours as he visibly slumped, and took a step back, you might as well have been holding a gun, a bullet to his chest with the way he was looking at you. Turning your back to him, your own tears threatening to fall, you grabbed the bottle again unscrewing the cap, pouring yourself another glass.
“What do you mean?” Steve is silent again, his presence still behind you, feelings of uncertainty heavy in the air, “Y/N, look at me please...” the defeat in his voice made you feel awful, this was your boyfriend of two years, the person that had stayed by your side that whole time, through everything. The good times and the bad, the way you both laughed, the random dates he took you on, sometimes even after work, some of which ended up being group outings as one of the kids had seen you both and then got on the walkie talkies as quickly as possible, they ended up calling that ‘code blue’ as the first time it happened Steve was in his Scoops Ahoy uniform, the movie nights, the late night talks, walks, your safety net, the countless jokes that weren’t even funny. Helping him with his hair, the days he was sick and you’d take care of him, and the days he would do exactly the same back for you. He never faltered, he was always brave, always stayed strong for you, for everyone, but here he was, seconds away from breaking down. A painful ache in his voice that cut you in half, the same ache breaking the last pieces of your heart that were still intact, you wiped your tears away with the back of your sweater, turning around to see Steve once more, pain drowning his features,
“I’m sorry, Steve. I can’t do this anymore.” he sucked in a shaky breath as a sob broke from his lips. Pain. Pain that you had caused. You finished your glass of vodka, keeping your back to Steve, you couldn’t watch him break, you couldn’t see the sadness and heartache on his face. As if he hadn’t been through enough recently,
“Y/N, please,” his voice was low, strained, as though he was bleeding out on the spot behind you, “don’t do this, we can get through this, we can get through anything, please just don’t...” you turned round to Steve his eyes visibly blood shot probably from tiredness and the tears that were free flowing down his cheeks,
“I’m sorry Steve.” You walked past him, a slight sway to your walk from too much alcohol in a short space of time on an empty stomach as you tackled the stairs, all you wanted to do was sleep, before you even got half way up the stairs you heard the front door close causing you to stop on the spot, your own sobs now tearing way through your body, this pain was tearing you apart, so much loss, but you had caused this last one.
You found yourself sitting on the end of your bed looking at the pictures behind your desk once again, would you ever feel that kind of happiness again or was this the new norm? A burning hole in the middle of your chest that was once whole and pushed together in the shape of the people you loved. All of those memories seemed like a lifetime ago, how time and life could be fleeting, oh how you took it all for granted.
***
Two weeks had passed.
Two long weeks.
Probably the longest two weeks of your life.
In those two weeks you’d had almost everyone knock on your door, mainly Robin and Dustin, “Y/N, open this door right now or I promise you I’ll put a brick through your window and climb in there myself.” Dustin shouted as he looked through the small glass patterns on the front door for signs of movement, “I’m not joking Y/N.” Dustin looked around your drive and picked up half a brick, “ten seconds, Y/N!” finally he saw movement and put the brick down on the grass, you opened the door and huffed,
“Dustin, every day for two weeks, ae you not bored yet?” He pushed you aside gently and kicked his shoes off before throwing himself onto the sofa and turning on the small TV as if he lived there, “and how can I be of assistance today?” you stood in the doorway of the living room, you no longer had the bandages on your hands, the cuts on your hands were hardly visible now, your other physical injuries were also doing much better, some might not even scar, not that you cared about a bit of scarring,
“You look like shit,” Dustin looked back at you and scoffed, he wasn’t wrong, you’d been wearing the same kind of clothes for two weeks, anything you could get your hands on. Mix matched sweats and sweaters, sometimes Steve’s t-shirts, on a very rare occasion you treated yourself by wearing a pair of jeans. Your usual full of life hair was lifeless and scraggly from the lack of brushing, your eyes blood shot from lack of sleep, red lips from gnawing at them constantly,
“Well, love you too, Dustin,” you rolled your eyes and went to the kitchen fetching juice and cookies on a tray, “so what is it today?” Dustin cleared his throat and made his way into the kitchen, taking a few cookies off the tray as he took a seat around the table drinking juice you’d bought specially for him,
“It’s Steve,” your breathing hitched as you looked to the floor, biting at your already raw lips, you pulled a second chair out and sat opposite Dustin, taking your own cookie and nibbling at it. You hadn’t eaten well for two weeks now,
“What about him?” you took a swig of your own juice and sit looking towards your younger friend,
“Don’t give me that, Y/N. I know you still care, Robin tells me things, y’know, and you’re not someone that doesn’t care about people,” Dustin shook his head, “this act is bullshit, Y/N. Steve is over there wondering what he did wrong, what he can do to help you, he’s broken, Y/N and none of us can get through to him, ne needs you and you need him and we need you both. We need our kick ass non babysitters back. We need to stick together. We can’t all break otherwise what do we have?” you bit the inside of your cheek letting Dustin talk, you had been unfair, everything in this world was so wrong and you were breaking the only good thing in it,
“I’m scared, Dusty,” you looked to him and he nodded, not wasting time to eat more cookies, all the kids loved your cookies,
“We all are, Y/N. you know this isn’t over right?” you looked down knowingly and started to play with the patterned table cover, “Steve needs you, I need you, we all need you. You know Eddie wouldn’t want this right?” you breathed deeply at the mention of his name, “you’re the bravest person he knew, he told me, and do you know what else?” you looked up from the table, “he loved you and Steve together, he saw how happy he made you and that’s what he wanted for you. He wanted you to be happy.” You sighed, breath shaky as a tear fell from your lashes onto the tablecloth you were playing with moments before,
“Well he got one thing wrong, he was the bravest.” Dustin put his hand over yours and gave it a light squeeze,
“Please just come and see Steve? Everyone is round there trying to cheer him up and he looks just as shit as you, if not more. If you don’t come with me, the others are going to try one by one, I’m the nicer one.” He stood up from the table, hopeful,
“Dustin I can’t,” disappointment clouded his eyes, “I can’t go over there empty handed, help me make some cookies?” the usual toothy grin from Dustin was back, one you hadn’t seen for a such a long time, one that made your heart swell. You loved those kids so much and you’d do anything to protect them, you felt bad for wallowing in in your own self-pity when everyone you cared about was going through the exact same thing as you. You’d nearly lost the one thing that made sense and you were going to try and not let that slip any further. You and Dustin got to work on the cookies, not failing to get flour all over the surface and yourselves. Once the cookies were in the oven and cooking, you looked over to Dustin, “Keep an eye on the cookies for me? I’m going to try and sort this out a bit,” you pointed to your mop of a hair as he grinned and nodded, picking up his walkie as you left the room,
“Guys, it’s Dustin, over.” He waited for the usual static of the walkie patiently as he pressed more buttons hoping to hear from the others,
“Hearing you loud and clear, Dustin, what’s the status, over.” Mike was on the other end, uncertainty in his voice, but hugged by hope, Will, El and even Lucas in the background hugging over the other walkie talkie hoping for a shred of good news. Max was still in hospital, though in good hands. There was hope that she’d still wake up, she was strong and a fighter. Lucas sat by her bedside every chance he got, but he too needed fresh air sometimes, to see his friends. Being cooped up waiting for someone to wake up wouldn’t do anyone any good if it was constant. Same four walls day in, day out. It took some time for him to realise that however.
“Guys, we have ourselves a code blue. Over.” Dustin chimed excitedly as the rest of the youngsters screamed in joy, they were out of ear shot from Steve and Robin, all around the pool as it was such a lovely day in Hawkins, warm with a light breeze hitting the trees and pool every now and then causing small ripples, birds still chirping. Even amidst all the uncertainty and heartache, life could be beautiful.
You looked into the mirror having put a little bit of makeup on, an extreme rarity for you with everything that had gone on the past few years, you’d finally put a brush through your washed hair and changed into something more you, high waisted jeans, a black t-shirt and a light denim jacket you could take off if you wanted, you felt the warmth through the bathroom window as you looked at yourself in the mirror once more, “presentable.” You could smell cookies downstairs signalling Dustin had kept to his word and kept an eye on then, not letting them burn. You hurried down the stairs with a skip to your step and twirled to Dustin who was standing in the hall with a cookie jar in hand, ready to pack them once they’d cooled a little,
“There’s the Y/N I know! Yes!” Dustin fist bumped the air with his free hand wishing the cookies would cool down faster. You gathered your shoes and a small bag to put your keys and anything else you needed in,
“what if he doesn’t want to see me?,” you stopped in your tracks, looking at Dustin unsure, “what if I’ve hurt him too much and he never wants to see me again?” you play with the hem of your denim jacket, backtracking, wondering if this was a good idea after all,
“you’re the only person he wants to see, Y/N. we just invite ourselves in and he’s too nice to tell us to get out,” you shake your head,
“You know that isn’t true, he loves you guys as much as I do, even if he’s in the worst mood possible, he’d always rather have you guys around, you know that,” Dustin nodded, putting the cooler cookies into the jar sealing them tightly, “did you bike over here?” you questioned as Dustin shook his head,
“I didn’t,” he grinned and dug his hand in his back pocket, pulling Steve’s car keys out and waving them in your face, “he doesn’t know, obviously,” Dustin shrugged as you shook your head and put your head in your hand laughing in disbelief, a real laugh, something you forgot you could do,
“Dustin! You could have caused an accident!” you tried to sound serious over your laughing that just wouldn’t stop,
“well, you don’t see many cars on the road these days after what happened, maybe people are too scared,” he shrugged once more, “not me, now. Let’s gooooo!” Dustin ran for the front door, cookies in hand, and his small backpack you didn’t realise he had draped over a shoulder,
“Ahhh. Not so fast, keys!” you extended your hand to Dustin, Steve absolutely loved that car, sometimes you wondered if he loved that car more than you and okay, Dustin got there safely, but now he was in your care he wouldn’t be driving that thing,
“Spoil sport,” he ginned as he handed you the keys stepping out into the outside. You took a deep breath. The smell of the outside you hadn’t seen in weeks. The light breeze through your hair the sun tingling against your skin, butterflies and birds, nature. Things you hasn’t stopped to look at for such a long time, “earth to Y/N,” you shook your head and walked towards the car, opening it for you both.
You hadn’t driven in forever, was it something you could forget? Fastening your seatbelt, making sure Dustin did the same, starting the car and opening the windows, you pulled the sun visor down, a small Polaroid falling onto your lap. You turned it around to see a picture of you and Steve, your heart beating against your chest as you ran your finger over the photo. It was the first one you took together, before you were even official. Halloween 1984. That stupid party, the night Steve and Nancy broke up. You found Steve crying on the back step, you spent the rest of the night trying to cheer him up. One too many beers, weed and a stupid camera, “he kept it...” Dustin looked up at you as you put the photo in the dashboard opposite Dustin,
“Of course he did, he keeps everything,” you didn’t know that, you didn’t say anything further as you pulled off the drive, it wasn’t a long drive. It was actually an easy enough walk, you didn’t live far from Steve. The nights he would randomly turn up at your house and throw pebbles at the window even though no one else was in the house, small memories making you smile.
The drive was quiet, Dustin looking out the window the whole way there, your heart still hammering against your chest, would people be happy to see you, would they hate you, would things be the same, what the fuck were you going to say to Steve? Pulling onto his drive, things got too real, you heard laughter from the other younger people of the group outside as you locked up the car, Dustin rushing to the back gate with cookies, though before he could you were tackled by El, Mike, Will and Lucas, “Y/N OH MY GOD YOU’RE HERE!” mike exclaimed as you laughed with the kids, some of them sopping wet from the pool, of course they still loved you, “we all missed you so much, it’s so good to see you” you ruffled everyone’s hair, something you always used to do when they were younger, something you still hadn’t stopped, tears in your eyes, you smiled, for once they weren’t sad tears,
“I’ve missed you all so much, I’m sorry I haven’t been around, I’m sorry I haven’t been stronger for you all.” They all hugged you tighter, understanding, when did they all grow up?
“we all understand,” Lucas looks at you empathetically, “Max would want us all together, so would Eddie,” you hugged them all just that little bit tighter as they lead you into the back gate, not much had changed in Steve’s back yard except the grass was unkempt, the pool still clean somehow, “we will let you talk to Steve now,” you took a deep breath and looked towards the back sliding doors Robin leaning against them smiling as she ran out to hug you,
“Oh praise the heavens you’re here, I cannot deal with him in there for one minute longer,” you looked towards robin apologetically and she shook her head, “none of that, Y/N. Go see him, bring our Steve back, yeah?” she smiled and sat next to the kids, stealing one of the cookies you made.
You made your way into the house, the house that had so many different memories, you kicked your shoes off and put them where you always do before poking your head into the living room, Steve’s back was towards you as he was staring at the TV something you guessed he’d been doing for the past couple weeks, a lot like you really. His hair was too dishevelled and free of product, but oh fuck did he look like home. “If you’re there to try get me outside in the pool again, Robin I swear to fuck I will change the locks on this house.” He signed defeated and tuned round, his pupils dilating, shock on his face, the evident bags under his eyes from lack of sleep, “Y/N?” he scrambled off the sofa as fast as he could, scared you were a figment of his imagination, “is... is it really you? You’re here...” he stood opposite, reaching out to you,
“Steve...” tears welled in your eyes, “I am so, so sorry, I never wanted to hurt you, I didn’t want what I said, I was so lost in my own mind,” he pulled you into a bone crushing hug, “please forgive me, I’m so sorry,” you pulled away to look at him, tears in his own eyes as he brushed your free falling ones away with his thumb, “I love you so much, I was so scared of losing you too that I fucked up and lost you anyway,” he pulled you back into him, the smell of cedar, bergamot and a slight hint of cigarette smoke, home.
“You didn’t lose me, sweetheart. I love you, more than anything,” he pulled you into him, lips crashing together, cola Popsicle and a small hint of your home cooked cookies that Dustin must have been bringing to him secretly. Everyone loved your cookies. He pulled away and smashed his lips against yours again over and over, the taste of salt now from both of your tears, small lazy kisses planted all over your mouth as he pulled away, your lips slightly swollen, his honey eyes full of life once more, he was never going to let you go. He pulled you flush with his body, your head resting against his chest, as he ran his fingers through your hair, “you’re my home, Y/N. Wherever you are. That’s home to me. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be, okay?” you kissed him again, your cherry chapstick smearing over both of your mouths,
“you’re my home too, Mr. Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington,” you looked up to him, a smile on your face, no longer crying as you knocked your hip with his. The emptiness in your heart glazing over a little, the pieces of your broken heart slowly reconnecting, the feeling of life, love, family.
“Have you seen my hair right now?” he ran a hair though it, washed, but lifeless. “Give me a minute, yeah? Put a movie on.” He kissed you softly before sprinting out of the room. You sat on the sofa you’d sat on countless times as you went through old rentals that would probably never be returned as the video store was one of the places to be destroyed, you placed a VHS in the TV as Steve bounded down the stairs, his hair no longer lifeless and messy, but perfect. Your smile so big your jaw could dislocate, “better? The hair is back,” he grinned and jumped over you on the sofa, “Return of the Jedi? One of my favourites.” He pulled your legs over his lap, both of you draped over the sofa like nothing had changed, his hands caressing your knee, smiles not leaving either of your faces.
“GUYS, CODE BLUEEEE.” Dustin shouted from behind the sofa as everyone else bundled in, “and look at that, Farrah Fawcett spray,” Dustin grinned,
“That’s top secret, dude!” Steve shook his head, a genuine laugh falling from his mouth as everyone pulled blankets and cushions around themselves, your cookies in hand. A good old fashioned movie night, things were going to be okay, you looked over to Steve, his eyes glistening as he squeezed your leg. The people you chose as family, Robin in the corner of the room beaming for the both of you. Both of her best friends back together, where they belong. There was a long road ahead for all of you, but at least you’d always face these things together. You were all so much stronger together. A team. A family.

Ok ok but hear me out once more...
Reader steals lyney cards/freminets scrap as lyney is making a performance/freminet is on a diving mission and tries to make a magic trick/is tinkering with the scrap trying to make their own mechanical penguin, just like their crush/lover. But time flies by too quickly as the reader keeps failing that they forgot to pay attention to it
Where ever you go I'll go with ya Lyney/Fremient x gn!reader (separate)
Where ever you smoke I'll smoke with ya
Warnings- Just some fluff
Summary- (Lyney) you find a pack of cards and start to practice tricks to show your boyfriend. (Freminent) Running through your shared homes, holding bits of scrap metal was how you'd planned to spend some of your day, but not all of it
Notes- I am alive! Struggling to find motivation 😔
Lyney
It was a plan you'd had for a while. You wanted to suprise your boyfriend with a magic trick. Even if he was extra skilled at what he did, you still wanted to suprise him. When lyney was out for a show you ran to go find a deck of cards.
Turns out he had piles in his room for practicing. But he always had 2 special sets he used for performing, the one you'd gotten him and the one his sibling's had gotten him. A deck of cards was on his side of the bed. You knew he stayed up late to practice tricks to show, but you m
never complained. The sound of his frustarted groans and happy noises had become a lovely sound to sleep too.
You crawled onto the bed, cards in hand and pulled out your phone. Searching for the best card trick you could find. Most of them looked pretty difficult, but it was something you wanted to do for a while.
You loved Lyney's face when he was suprised. It was like the sun had literally come into your room. His smile could brighten anyones day.
For the next few hours you hyperfocused on the cards in front of you. Practing over and over again till you got it perfect, even going so as to video call your friend to show them. But to you it didnt feel like it was perfect.
"Darling? You still in bed?" A voice rang throught the house.
*oh crap* you thought. You'd lost track of time trying to do this trick.
"Y-yeah one minute!" You called out trying to shove the cards back in the packet.
Its not that you were embarrased but you were scared to show him incase you messed up. All that time you spent practising, would be for nothing.
"Oh darling." A smile crept on his face. "Trying to do a magic trick were you?"
"N-no."
"Come on, dont lie."
"Yeah."
A chuckle escaped his lips as he sat down next to you. He wrapped a gentle arm around you, and leaned into you.
"Wanna show me?"
"Well its not perfect yet-"
"Dont doubt yourself honey."
Fremient
Fremient usually left the house early but never without saying goodbye. He always loved to go on early morning dives to see the sunrise peaking throught the depths of the water. Sometimes you went with him, but today you had to stay home. You told him you were still super tired and were gonna sleep for a bit.
But you weren't, really. For months and months, you'd watched him tinker with things, and you wanted to do the same. You had an idea for a small penguin that he could carry around if he wanted.
As soon as you heard the front door, click shut, you shot up out of bed. You ran to his little workshop and found the pile of scrap pieces. You picked out the ones that looked the most pleasing.
For hours, you mumbled and groaned to yourself and completely lost track of time. Before you knew it, fremient was standing right by the door to the workshop.
"Y/n? What are you doing?" Fremient chuckled.
You stood up quickly and narrowly avoided hitting your head on the shelf above. "Oh, nothing!"
He walked slowly towards you and rubbed your head where you almost hit it. "Careful."
"Yeah yeah."
"So, what were you doing?"
"Just making something..."
"Would you like some help?"
"No! I mean, it's for you..."
Fremient turned a shade of red, as you mentioned that. He looked down at the ground, doing anything to cover his face. He sat down on the seat behind you.
"You can make it, and i can help if you need."
"Alright."
After about 10 minutes of you started to give up. Until fremient came up behind you and started to help.
"So this bit goes here, and this here." He pointed. "It's okay to ask for help, y/n."

Did a little writing as wind down to sleep and feel better for it.
Just a little Neon Adjuration. Tossing it below the cut cause why not. Danny is apparently very determined to start flirting with Jason right away. Yes Danny, Jason is very hot and calls his bike he and was watching your hands intently, but come on my dude, he's been there like 10-15 minutes tops.
“Okay, well, you did a number on your darling here,” Danny said as he straightened from where he had been bent over Jason’s bike. “Can you fix him?” Jason asked instead of cussing like he wanted to. “Sure, I can fix most things,” Danny said with an easy confidence. He wiped his hands off on a rag that was more dirty than clean at this point. “But won’t know how long it will take till I open him up. It’s something in the motor for sure. And I won’t have factory parts or anything likely.” Jason sighed and rubbed at his face. “Not ideal for some, I know,” Danny said with apologetic resignation. “If you’d rather call someone to ship him out to where you’re going, I can keep him here for ya and drive you to the nearest city that can you can catch a bus at.” “I don’t care about factory parts. He’s already a Frankenstein. Would your fix last until I hit the coast?” “Would my—” Danny scoffed. “You could cross the country a dozen more times and it wouldn’t be the motor that failed you.” “You’re that good?” “Bet my life on it,” Danny said with a sharp grin. For a moment he reminded Jason of the wild corn: feral. A feral mechanic in a feral corn field in the middle of nowhere except right where Jason needed him. Jason had spent enough time both alive and dead to not dismiss it when fate threw him a boon. “Alright, let’s see what you can do. Just be sweet with him, he’s got old bones.” Danny laughed, “Don’t it feel like we all do some days. But don’t worry, I can be real gentle like.” Jason swallowed heavily.

now i need some karma for the rest of the boys...
This has nothing to do with my more spiteful side that wants revenge or justice and wants to make the chain miserable by teaching them that they can't always be in control, no, not at all, Why are you implying that? Do I look like that kind of person? Haha youre funny
i live to serve, I love a really good hearted MC/Darling but you know what better? A good but still fallible person :D as all humans are and these MFs will learn as your smiles can be serve to them, the spite and a ire can also got like a five start dessert.
*laugh in bad tempered Latina*
Let's imagine these man's no all of them are moronic and egoist when they fell in love and become obsessed with the darling, maybe is their copy mechanism that is already shite. But why they have to take our freedom or even torment us? Make the darling suffer a accident or chase them ? Mf they where look for grocery no to run away- well, some will tremble, others will dread in silence and others will try to Scape but... What about that say 'oh Nah, they think just because I can't do any magic I can't give them a lesson? You bet' so let's start.
I will start for the worst yandere to the least problematic, I will try my best so hope this pettiness and revenges/karma can give what you soul yearn.
Legend, our beloved red flag when yandere, there's no much need to say why, seven to what? Eight adventure is you count the one with the chain, the marin inciden, his uncle dead, this man never needed a sword, he needed a therapist from the age of 11yr. No matter how much wanting to break his neck in your sleep come after he literally kidnapped you, probably try to use some magic in you even a curse ring is all before fail, there's no need for tears or scream, we know he will man it up, so what about to opposite of kill him with kindred? Apathy, apathy is irony the key, treat everyone else better than him, give all the love and kisses to his descendant to spite it more, make your favourite food to them, make him watch, make him yearn but can't have it, sing at night at low-key tune the song of the dream fish, come on some pts :) make him break slowly to tears and stomb the pieces with apathy and overly Caring for the rest of the chain.
Four... Four is complicated and almost put twilight here but four had Cuatro! CUATRO reasons to be here (Akka the colors) this man is collected and laid-back, till these mfs got wild and holy shite, while four could let darling with no weapon and be pretty possessive he still is no a danger to darling themselves, but the colors? His mayor character in personality ?? Fragment of his personality made person, what the worst could happen? Blue, Vio and red, these could happened, green is okay but red didn't have any control, but if you say you let him be your toy to please he will jump to it, congrats, you have a him ready to bark if you say so, deprive him of your warm now, make him cry and whine, be the boss but remember tease with some ilusión of act of affection, yes, all horrible to say it but if needed then you must do it, be the bad person that day. Now, blue, blue is complicated because he explosive so do a social experiment with him if you say, a system of reward for good behavior with you, for letting your weapons back even pampered him but the moment he got back to his bullshit ? All affection privileges be take from no only him but the rest of the colors to, make the ire got to the frustrating point that only tears are all let, and when he finally break just caress him and with the most caring voice tell him what he did bad like a little kid, soon he will learn or stay in the stages of rage tears with you cleaning then and baby him, make him feel embarrassed, a little humiliation is good for bad boys. Vio, vio, a reward system is good for him, learn that bad action from his part end with red and green and blue being pampered in love or worse, cold shoulder for poor four that didn't know what the colors did wrong and is frantic trying to right wrong from making finery jewelry to whatever weapon you want just say or if he didn't know just tell him the concept and draw it and he do the rest.
Now can we take a moment and go for a spray of water or even better... Perfume and use it on twilight that was such a bad boy. We know mina did some damage but still- you just dare to use Wolfy on darling? Thousand years on jail thousand of years! Growls? Did he try to bite? Let's call Time to let his disappointed eyes burn him alive, or better, ilia or rusl do it if darling is in his Hyrule, look at him being scolded like a little kid for being a bratt, look how the kids in ordon laugh at him because he was being scolded for doing 'bad' like them, make all the woman's in ordon scold him, put him a cone of shame as Wolfie, common you don't need to go as far as with four and the colors, this man is easy to suffer guilt also the cone of shame make more easy the rest of the chain to laugh their ass at him.
sky, sky my beloved my dear man, you're a pain in the ass as yandere, thank God the godslayer of the chain is less agressive than some but still, expect a literal worshiper and at the same time someone delusional and needy, all in one of the most pretty pack ever seeing, this man could manipulate, even accidentally hurt someone and them being the most tearful bruh in the story of existence, all soft and letal, a darling more tempered or even more mature would see the best revenge is both living well and the true, so with no drama, no sugarcoating, tell him he losing you, tell him how even his reaction in that moment is only making you feel disappointed on him, use the reverse card on him, tell him how bad he was... Make him got the stages of grief, make him your servant for forgiveness, Hylia must be having her Jaja on him for leaving her reincarnation. The best revenge here is seeing him in the eye and tell him if he do it again you will hate him, he will no sleep for a time.
Time, time dear man, you try your best you really did, but when you got yandere and with these mask in your hands, you're the terror, good thing he trying to understand, but he almost as problematic as the rest of the boys before him but in different way, he wise, very wise, he live two times what should be a normal lifespan, but there's a thing, man didn't read and this man cannot run as fast as the mailman so this easy, write Malon. That it. Why? I like to think he managed to make Malon fell for you and start this tentative courting to lead to be darling part of the matrimony, so... Let Malon deal with him when everyone's go to lon lon, poor twilight is trembling like a leaf with fear of no existing anymore tomorrow. No all you have to deal is with a sad sap time for months but that okay.
Hyrule, why?? Why my love?? I blame all he can do to his fae nature that all. The good thing, he one of the most caring and empathy of the chain but also means, he can be talk like a semi normal person and let him see what he did was wrong but if he goes a little far for our human existence liking? Well, is would be sad it poppy seeds got carried away in the wind in from of him and the fairy instincts say got to count them and collect then all. If you always refuse if presents, really this man don't need much to tear up in his pillow like our first heart break, don't try something mean then that, remember we need our medic, kiss his cheek Chasty and caress his back as you tell him he did back but you can forgive him if he mean it and prove he honest, he will try his best.
Last but no less important our captain, warriors is a curious case because you first must notice that he did something wrong to us, conscious of it, because let's be honest if you think he doing it in jezz or even accident or in a joke you be annoyed but will no plot a lesson to him, but if he slip in his act *evil laugh* ignore him, give more attention to legend, to twilight but don't give him your time, you company but in a way that didn't make the rest of the chain got much questions just thinking that you're in a need of a respite, make him desperate, make him want to tear, try to be you partner in mission but darling professional and very out of reach still, say wild or even twilight is pretty, make him look at you scandalized and make this man pout as a five year old kid, because he know he did bad and still with guilt he did it, he understands and begrudgingly accept it, things are a your phased, no his.
Honorable mention;
Wind; no hug for bad little brothers and no candy's.
First; I feel bad by just mentioning him but if he end in the chain and end yandere just to make something stupid by accident, just look at him in the eyes, the look of total disappointed on him will make him wish dead, please, do no try anything more, this man is a mess already thank to the four years in jail by lies, just tell him you're angry at him.
Hope you like it, some are just more severe than others but that is already based in how their trials are... Some yanderes are more unstable than others.

Had a dream that someone made a FNAF style murder drones game (I feel like someone's actually done that, but I digress)
the mechanics were a little different, rather than having to close two separate doors, there was a set of double doors. They were barred like some old prison cell. There was a slight gap between the two though, and whenever a drone made it to your room they'd slide their claws through the gap and try to pry the doors open.
So rather than use up power, every time you failed to direct them away from your room the doors would get pried open a little bit more till one of them could slip through and get you. The quicker you could act, the quicker you could draw them back into the other parts of the facility. If you let them, they could just stand there and slowly open the thing fully in one go.
It was N, V, and Uzi going after you, of course They acted how you'd expect a FNAF animatronic to act
cept that Khan was there too, but he didn't attack you or try to open the doors. He'd drag himself to the room and just stare at you through the bars of one of the doors. He's also the only one who looked different, with flesh growing on his face. More like growing in his face and seeping through the seams and creating melted bubbles of plastic as it expanded
sir, what the hell happened to you, and what are you staring at?
#murder drones#dreams#weird dreams#it seemed like a pretty fun variant of the typical fnaf game play#especially if there was an option to risk leaving your cameras unattended and going up to the doors to push them closed#you could get “health” back but also risked one of the drones showing up and being able to get you through the bars with their tails#not like I'd be able to program any of that though

thinking about Daryl as a kid makes me wanna tear up... i think he was definitely one of the "beautiful boys". man is a god, look at those feautures. he definitely got picked up on it too. i feel like he was one of those scrawny kids at school, considering his circumstances at home. hell, he even got bullied for it 'till middle school or late elemantary school. he used to get in a lot of fights once merle taught him how to beat the shit outta someone. he definitely had to learn how to stand up&fend for himself through fucked up experiences. (remember that episode how he talks about getting lost in the woods when he was younger than sophia??)
i bet his abusive shitty dad didn't like merle better than he did daryl. however, a part of me feels strongly about one thing when it comes to his dad, which is him comparing daryl and merle like all the time.
daryl used to bring beers to his dad and his crackhead friends while merle would sit in a corner with a smug face, looking down at Daryl subtly. Daryl couldn't dare to raise his head to a point where he'd make an eye contact with his father. As he'd make his way to the door, his dad would chuckle. daryl would turn his body to him, that was a message he always had to read perfectly.
that's when the torture would start. his dad would humiliate him, showering daryl with insults. his dad would talk shit about daryl's appearence, his weirdly developed hunch at a young age. that was his dad's fault, too. his abuse, insults, disgust toward him only made daryl develop a hunch as a coping mechanism, he then fixed his posture by the time he hit puberty.
his dad, then would start praising merle as if he is treating him any better besides those moments. he'd pat him on the shoulder, tell daryl to man up and be more like his brother. i believe merle's odd ego and acts of superiority is because of this aswell, daryl knows it, merle didn't. they were both just kids but daryl remembers it, merle didn't.
i also think merle was a bit sneaky, if that's the right word. the second merle would sense some alcohol odour reeking from their dad, he'd just disappear. though sometimes he'd fail. daryl would have to be the one to bear everything himself, the times merle didn't fail.
idk i had this idea lol had to get it off my chest
