Warhammer 40,000 Space Wolves Changes for June 20, 2024
The Sons of Russ are currently exemplifying all the problems GW has had balancing Space Marines. Their Detachment has been pretty hot garbage since the beginning of 10th, but they've had more than enough luck using vanilla Detachments. Currently, they're sitting at a whopping 58% win rate, with a full double the expected performance at top tables for their 3% player representation.
GWs first answer to this is to once again try to adjust the Champions of Russ Detachment. You now get to start with a Saga completed and then try to complete additional Sagas on each turn. This may finally be enough to let Space Wolf players enjoy their detachment. This effectively gives them one of four buffs to choose from, picked at the start of the first Battle Round. Additionally, with the new Secret Mission rules, having more Sagas up in the late game is no longer a case of "too little, too late." This is an awesome change.
While we get no new Errata we get some crazy FAQs for Murderfang. On the one hand, it's ability has been confirmed to trigger multiple times per phase. However, that doesn't mean it actually does anything. Apparently Fighting out of phase still requires you be eligible to fight by having made a Charge or being within Engagement Range. Similarly, Murderfang can only benefit from Big Guns Never Tire in your Shooting Phase. So if he's locked in combat, he can't shoot out of phase.
Finally we get a pair of nerfs to popular Space Wolf units. Both Thunderwolves and Wulfen have gone up 10 pts for their basic unit. Honestly that's not that big a hit. Really, with the exception of the clarifications for Murderfang, this is pretty good new for the Sons of Russ. They now have another detachment to look at again and see if they can finally make it work. They also don't care about the nerfs to Ironstorm Spearhead. The real nerf is they're going to lose, at most, about 120 pts of their current army lists. Space Wolves are still in position to be the premiere heroes of the Imperium.

A QUICK BACK AND FORTH
What better time to have a brief look at what I got up to in the past year? And see how that matched up to my plans from the end of last year, and to make some (hopefully achievable) plans for the year ahead.
Firstly though, this guy:
Tumblr media
My fantastic Secret Santa gift, a converted Primaris version of the original Iron Priest model. I love it so much, I've shared it everywhere else so why not here as well?
And now, the round-up...
2023
The year was basically spent seeing out the end of the ninth edition of 40k. A good meet-up at the beginning of the year which included some Boarding Actions action, and then on to the local Crusade league again, although one that was ultimately cut short with the release of tenth edition. At this point ninth was starting to feel a little stale, and very bloated rules-wise - I think I already made the point about the sheer number of stratagems I was juggling by the end.
And with tenth edition coming out, I ended up organising a weekend for people to play some games of it in the first week of its release. I was pretty proud that I managed to pull the event together, definitely a highlight of the year. I even managed to enjoy it over the persistent level of stress I felt! Turns out it's a good set of rules - I certainly enjoyed playing it in the second half of the year in the new Crusade league, as well as writing the short stories to go with my league results submissions.
RESULTS?
So how did I do with my plans for 2023? I got a few models built and primed (around 2000 points worth), including the Impulsor I wanted, plus a bonus Repulsor. I got a chunk of Phobos models painted up too, including one of my Invictors, but sadly the Storm Speeder and Hammerfall Bunker I mentioned last year are still waiting.
Transfers are still pending too, but I have got a row of spare shoulder pads ready to be tested on before I move on to actual models.
I also got all the Death Guard I built over the previous Christmas break all primed up, but no further. Like the Death Guard themselves, there's no rush, it's purely inevitable. No other projects got a look in really, but I did manage to build six Thunderwolves so there is a chance to do something a bit different (albeit more Space Wolves!).
No other projects sadly also includes the Sylvaneth. No games, nothing new painted, I will definitely change that this year.
2024
So what do I want to achieve this year? It's possible the Space Wolves codex could arrive in the second half of the year, so I can't see there being any new models I'll want to buy before then (bold words). From what I do already own it'd be nice to get the things I have nearly fully built to a primed state (the aforementioned Storm Speeder and Bunker, plus a Drop Pod), and some of the primed bits moved to the painting desk and hopefully to the gaming table as well.
On top of that I have a Brutalis Dreadnought I want to get built (at the very least), and then I'd like to work on my Erik Morkai conversion a bit more, maybe some terrain too. It'd also be nice to get the Thunderwolves and Wulfen ready for the table since it's impossible to tell what the new codex will bring in terms of units and models coming or going, so it'd be good to get some game time out of them before then.
Sylvaneth, simple - play (at least) one game, and it'd be nice to get one of the primed units I have painted up (Tree-Revenants, I'm looking at you).
Other than that, it's very much wait and see. Legions Imperialis I could be very tempted by but I'll wait to see how it shakes out in terms of rules and models, as well as uptake in the community. Epic is where it all started for me, so I can't imagine I'll hold out for long however.
Oh, and maybe more than 3 posts on here this year? I guess I'm already 33% of the way there at least! Happy New Year!

The Space wolf Defect is a byproduct of the genemods done to the natives of Fenris reacting to geneseed. Primaris wouldn't have had them till they started pulling recruits from Fenris stock. Its also why thunderwolves are part human.
Oh also I guess Primaris were supposed to not have any of the geneseed defects anymore and all the Blood Angels, Space Wolves etc fans were like “this is literally the entire point of the chapter wtf it’s why they’re cool” so I guess GW retconned that out by saying those defects/curses were just too strong even for Primaris version whatever but buy the models

Hobby Streak 66
Started a new basing style for my space wolves i a lot happier with. Mud underneath with snow, grass and muddy puddles. Heres some Thunderwolves.

I also did a base for my gladiator, which I wanted done before I plopped on the tank itself.

Here’s my wolf space marine!
Lt. Mars Greycall, native to Fenris and Grey Hunter of the Black Manes. He’s a prime model of a wolf marine, devoted to his chapter and his cause, proud of his glory, and seriously loves thunderwolves. He always seems to have a couple of them following him around. He’s pretty big for a space marine, somewhere between 8 to 9 ft. He’s a very active man, and often very protective of his battle brothers. As he has the habit of breaking away from a fight to help a fallen brother of his.
He met Aeco during the Siege of Fenris System. Although brief, they became quick friends and often sought each other out during the aftermath. Mars enjoys the quiet company of Aeco and their shared liking of heading and retelling the stories and texts of old

Rating Primarchs By Cuddling Ability and If I Actually Would
This is purely opinion of course lol
HOWEVER: To clarify, I am not doing Primarchs I just have 0 idea on if they actually would cause I don’t know their personalities too well
RATING SYSTEM: 0 [I would never cuddle even if It’d kill me] to 10 [ple ase, I beg]
------
Fulgrim - 7/10 - Fulgrim’s probably the BEST person to cuddle with out there, a definite 10 but he loses 3 points because I personally wouldn’t cuddle Fulgrim. Sure it’d be a awesome cuddle but I just don’t vibe with him personally
Perturabo - 10/10 - Perturabo keeps his room cold as all hell and we all know it [but it makes it 10x better cause you can cuddle to stay warm], and plus he’s no doubt a BRICK. You’re gonna have to teach him a bit on how to cuddle probably, which is just fine.
Leman Russ - 9.5/10 - Would get a 10/10 but he no doubt sleeps with his Thunderwolves on the bed because he’s a wolf dad like that, so you’d have to fight for a prime spot. When you get to it though, VERY good cuddles
Rogal Dorn - 6/10 - He gives good cuddles. That is all.
Konrad Curze - -4/10 - Konrad. He’s a stinker, he’s also more likely to bite your face off than actually cuddle. BUT if you somehow go through all that, he’s a pretty okay cuddler, definately not the best and it’s more like a choke hold
Sanguinius - 10/10 - Nuff said. Feathers? Warm. Comfy. Soft. Play with each other’s hair. Soff.
Ferrus Manus - 3/10 - I hate giving Ferrus such a low rating, but while he is similar to Perturabo in some aspects, he also keeps his room surprisingly warm and that sounds like suffocation central. Bonus 7 points because I love him, so he gets a 10/10
Angron - 6/10 - If you somehow manage to cuddle Angron/get Angron to cuddle you, you’re going to find yourself in the tightest hold he can get away without killing you. It’ll also be very quiet. Just accept your fate and cuddle him
Roboute Gulliman - -7/10 - -7 points because I don’t think Roboute would ever cuddle anyone other than his eldar gf. The only thing that will convince me they’re not a pairing is if GW personally looks me in the eye and says it
Mortarion - 1/10 - Mortarion doesn’t cuddle, I can’t see him cuddling
Magnus the Red - 8/10 - WHILE he is very good, cuddling for Magnus is more like ‘Let’s both sit in a super comfy blanket and pillow fort/I sit in the comfy fort while you sit on my lap and we both read books together’ Actually, update 10/10
Horus Lupercal - 8.9/10 - Fucking bold to assume I’d rate my man Horus low. Also, he’s a cuddle king. Can’t tell me otherwise.
Lorgar Aurelian - 2/10 - I also can’t see Lorgar cuddling, but more like both of you chilling in a room together in companionable silence
Vulkan - 7/10 - Get past the bone crunching grip, and you have a very warm furnace to cuddle with. Points deducted cause while Ferrus’s room is warm, Vulkan’s is stifling
Alpharius Omegon - 5/10 | 5.5/10 - Both are alright at cuddling but one’s a bit better than the other and no one knows which one it is
