“Average scythe character has died 20 times” is a statistical error. Average scythe character has died 2-3 times. Lucifer Georg, who died 500 times in the span of a single month, is an outlier adn should not be counted.

I've started Thunderhead, for the moment I have read 8 chapters, and it's looking really good. I think Rowan has reached the highest level of dramatism. Calling himself Sythe Lucifer, dressing in black (which I know is a symbol because scythes don't wear black but, come on, he is enjoying every part of it, he likes feeling important)... it's so ridiculous it's funny. Oh, and his meeting with Citra. Again, eveything he does is so intense and he's always trying to look misterious, I know he just wants to impress her and I can't stop giggling in excitment when they interact, even if it's stupid (because, in the end, I'm a sucker for all of these romantic things). I'm just hoping nothing bad happens to Citra and Curie because I know something is going on and that the Thunderhead wants to warn them about the danger they're in. And that something that's going on is Rand, like, the scythe that was in Goddards group and that was supposedly dead? Good to know. And also, the Thunderhead is so funny, I love that thing, he's always talking about how great he is, and he's actually great, but I just think it's hillarious.

I know I'm basically the only person who has thought about this character more than once but even still I would like other people's opinions

Neal Shusterman really created the greatest character of all time, gave her an unresolved love story with another 10/10 character, and then abruptly killed her off in the second book

AOAS is actually so weird out of context. The main baddie is literally from mars, he killed an entire planet, was beheaded, and then started wearing one of the MC’s best friend’s body like the other 17% of the headless horseman for the ~drama~. One of the main driving plot points of the first book is Mars Man kidnapping Basically The President’s daughter and forcing the MC to babysit her against his will while he studies to get his license to kill. My man floods Basically NATO with mind-controlled sharks and yells “lol nope, u thought” while watching world leaders get eaten from a helicopter. The B-plot is New Jesus trying to navigate the intricacies of religion and developing a dysfunctional-ass found family that consists of his tour manager, a stubborn but devout theatre kid, a jean-cloaked ex-killer, and Robot God. He falls in love with a sexy sea captain who gets possessed by Robot God bc it’s in love. There’s deep talks about nature and morality of humanity. The two MC’s bang while dying of hypothermia while sinking to the bottom of the ocean. This isn’t even half of it.

The first iteration (that we see), and the last.
Maybe this is the Easter egg hidden in the numbers? This very subtle foreshadowing that we wouldn’t think twice about on a first read?

thinking today about that one line from neal shusterman's the toll where greyson asks the Thunderhead if he is a bad person the Thunderhead tells him "you are a wonderful person. you are a terrible person"
and he asks it, "so which is it?" and the Thunderhead says, "why can't you see the answer is both?"
honestly, these lines changed the way i think about people's actions so much. it can be so difficult for me to not instantly judge people based on things they've done to me in the past, or how they've made me feel. my first instinct is that of a lot of people: just classify people into the box of good or bad, looking at traits that i consider good or bad. but people being both infinitely wonderful and also limitelessly terrible recontexualizes that so much-- an action can be wonderful or terrible, i can feel that a person is wonderful or terrible, but that doesn't change the fact that they can do both.
anyone is capable of wonderful things. anyone is capable of terrible things. nothing is mutually exclusive.

Actually I have been thinking about Greyson he’s just such a guy. He’s the most boring man in existence he got kicked out of college for jumping into someone’s car (he died immediately upon impact) he had horn implants and dyed his hair black he was a fugitive from the law. He did deep state investigative work in a prison themed nightclub and IMMEDIATELY fucked the scariest woman in the room. He still thinks about her constantly. According to legal records he crashed a bus killing dozens (no he didn’t) and collaborated with domestic terrorists (yes he did). His parents don’t know he exists and he was raised by the robot that controls the world, who his also his bestest friend. He’s the most specialest boy in the universe. He has survived several assassination attempts. He is a dead prophet he lives in a cave for like a month with his buddies and when the plot says “it’s time to go to space” he just decides to chill out on a boat instead. I love him he’s PERFECT.

Hi! So, I've finally finished Thunderhead, and let me tell you that I'm not ok.
I'm so mad at Goddard. He's a really good character but such a bad person. And he's a fucking liar. He lied about what happened with Endura, he lied abot Rowan killing Volta (and that makes me so angry), he lied about being sorry about all the people dying and about having been chosen as High Blade. And I thought Rand was going to have some kind of redeption arc, but I guess she didn't. I think that now either she'll have one or she'll become even more powerful that Goddard.
Anyway, what destroyed me was obviusly Curie's death, I cryed so much about it. She deserved to live happyly with Faraday for the rest of their lifes, not that. And Rowan and Citra being just there loving each other while she was dying really pissed me off, even thow I know they couldn't have done anything to help.
I still think that the Thunderhead is such a great character, speacially after finishing this book. He was so fed up and did what he should have done to everyone since the begining, just let them panic and live without him for a while, and I'm proud of it to do that. He felt so bad about not being able to save Endure, and it was destroyed when it found out about humans hiding the Nod thing from it. I'm so sad, poor thing.
I read the first chapter from The Toll, but I think I'm not going to be able to read it as fast because I'm having a lot of exams lately and honestly I'm still too mad about Marie's death to keep on reading as if nothing happened. But I'll probably post some stuff about it as I keep on reading :)

Hot Take (by virtue of the fact that nobody but me cares enough about this character to have a Take about this):
(also spoilers for the Arc of a Scythe series under the cut)
Sycthe Constantine should've been permanently blinded by the acid. There are 3 main reasons for this and one explanation of how it could work within the series:
This would fix an issue that the aoas series has as a whole, that being the ableist undertones. Listen I understand that they probably aren't really indicative of Shusterman's beliefs, he wanted to make a story where the key question is "what if humanity conquered death" and it's hard to make a world like that while still justifying physical disabilities existing, I get it. But blinding Constantine would mean a disabled character and really help make the series feel less ableist.
There's a precedent for it. It is already establised by this point that death by corrosive acid is irreversible, it wouldn't be a huge leap of logic to say that, like the brain, the eyeball is too complex to truly reconstruct or that the optic nerve retained some sort of permanent damage. In my opinion it wouldn't require any explanation. If you've already established that acid can have irreversible effects then you can extend that to eyeballs all you like.
Think of the DRAMA. The TRAGEDY. Imagine being the only person in the world who is disabled. I understand that Scythe Constantine isn't a main character, no matter how much I might want him to be, so maybe this is too much for what is barely a side character, but just picture the feelings of inadequacy, and the hardship and the lack of acceptance or even basic accommodations etc. etc. And with the training that Scythes undergo he would likely still be able to keep his position as a Scythe, he has the capacity to be like that guy Caine from John Wick 4, or to make a more popular reference Daredevil.
Now the problem here is whether Goddard would let a blind Scythe into his inner circle. This is debatable but I don't think it's implausible. Constantine being blind would give him an even more iconic look. Whatever eye coverings he would go for (I like when characters have bandages over their eyes but realistically he would probably just wear sunglasses), and the presence of a cane (or ideally a seeing-eye dog but this is personal preference again, I confess) compounded with the iconography of his robe colour and material would make him one of the most recognisable Scythes in the world. This would appeal to Goddard as it is stated in the first book in the series that he wants high visibility, which is why he chooses Junior Scythes that have specific racial leanings even when that is much more rare in this world and why he and his clique all add gems onto their robes. He likes for him and his pals to have a distinct, iconic appearance when compared to everyone else. And Constantine getting blinded would mean an even more distinct and iconic appearance that wouldn't necessarily cost his skill or respectability
Overall, I've thought about this character more than anybody else alive and also I didn't mention this in the main body of the post but the reveal that he hadn't been permanently blinded was so anti-climactic I mean come on.

I've always wanted to use the "no beta we die like ___" tag on ao3 but if I ever posted something that was not beta read on ao3 I would die so here are some variations I would use, getting progressively more unhinged (and all aoas related, obviously):
No beta we die like the Grandslayers (I saw this one on a fic)
No beta we die like Scythe Volta
No beta we die like Scythe Curie shouldn't have
No beta we die like Scythe Goddard should have in the first book

<< ❝ only a little farther, so hang in there. ❞ >> handsigned from Link @gloryseized
⟁▵・― twilight princess sentence starters / accepting. for @gloryseized
Light was scarce, the horde of monsters arduous, the path rugged and dangerous. But she―no, they―needed to press onwards.
The knight was on the construct on her ( how curious, she's yet to grasp refering to it as herself ) back, guiding the way through pitch-black darkness. Slow, yet steady, footsteps echoed. He weighed nothing, as if he weren't even present. Mineru would believe so, these circumstances still felt as if a dream.
Still, a weight still rested on her shoulders.
Yet, it wasn't the constricting, heavy, crushing pressure, the burden to act good, the memories of what once was and what will never will be. No, this time it was comforting. A steady warmth against the cold. A spark of hope in the bleakest night. It felt strange, unpleasant―but it was different. Something new.
And Mineru welcomed it.
It told her that this was all was real. Link, the one Zelda had spoke about eons ago, was real, breathing, here in the flesh. Finally. Finally.
Mineru hadn't realized that she had halted all movement, caught up in her turmoil, until Link's hands caught her eye ( ah―Zelda had taught her about this, too ). Did he notice? Or was he simply concerned by suddenly coming to a standstill? Regardless, Mineru acknowledges him by making the construct rumble gently in return.
“Thank you, Link,” A whisper by his ear, offering a more dignified response. “I apologize, I didn't mean to dwell. Let us continue.”
