The gorgeous @always_need_more_books tagged me in the #sixbooklgbtchallenge and as it’s PRIDE month too 🌈 I thought it was a perfect opportunity to join in! 📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖⁣ ⁣ Hello everyone, today I’m back with a book review for a novel that really surprised me - in a good way! I tried to read the author’s debut novel, The Other Typist and it really wasn’t for me, I had to DNF it. So when I received Three Martini Lunch with a book subscription box, I wasn’t falling over myself to read it as soon as possible.⁣ ⁣ How wrong was I? Three Martini Lunch starts slowly, setting the scene in a vibrant 1950’s New York and introducing our three main characters. Cliff is an aspiring writer who is fighting against his father’s lack of faith in his storytelling abilities, Eden is desperate to be an editor but finds 1950’s NYC difficult to navigate as an ambitious woman and Miles is a messenger and talented writer on his own merit but is also finding things difficult because of who he is and how he is perceived at that period in America’s history. ⁣ ⁣ It took me about 100 pages to get into this novel, I have to admit. However, once I was hooked, I was invested until the very end. I loved everything about it - the detailed nuances of the 1950’s, the way each character is given time and space to explore their struggles and how everything is woven together so beautifully. ⁣ ⁣ All three characters have their own fight to contend with and yet all three of their lives become embroiled together with startling and unforeseen consequences. This isn’t just a historical novel about the heady world of publishing, it’s so much more. It’s a meditation on feminism, ambition, race, sexuality, prejudice, betrayal, and grief that lingers with you long after you’ve finished the final page. ⁣ ⁣ Three Martini Lunch is why I will ALWAYS give an author a second chance and I’m heartily ashamed of myself that I judged this novel before I experienced it based on the author’s previous book. Hello everyone and hope you’re having a wonderful weekend! For today’s #stacksaturday I’m sharing my #fivefivestarreads stack which I was tagged in by the lovely @ellie.is.reading ⁣ ⁣ These are five books I’ve read recently and given five stars to. I’m having an amazing reading year (which is a bonus considering the state of the world at the moment!) and I could easily have picked a few more. ⁣ ⁣ The Pull Of The Stars - I read this as a buddy read with @tarheelreader and I haven’t even reviewed it yet! It’s wonderful and so timely for the pandemic at the moment. Look out for my review coming soon. ⁣ ⁣ The Summer That Melted Everything - my first introduction to Tiffany McDaniel and her debut novel. It’s an incredible look at prejudice in a small town when extremely hot weather ignites tempers with devastating consequences.⁣ ⁣ The Court Of Miracles - I’ve literally just finished this book, a recommendation from @keeperofpages and I thought it was a fantastic, gripping read with unforgettable characters. My review will follow!⁣ ⁣ Three Martini Lunch - another book I’ve recently finished and this was such a glorious surprise! It took me about 100 pages to get into but by p100 I was hooked!⁣ ⁣ Betty - this is Tiffany McDaniel’s second novel and such an astounding piece of work that it’s one of my books of the year. It’s moving, beautifully detailed and mesmerising (although very traumatic at points). I read it with @tarheelreader and we both adored it. Hello everyone! Hope you’re having a lovely Saturday. Today I managed to go out for a socially distanced and very safe lunch for the first time since February so that was wonderful and very needed. Today for #stacksaturday I’m sharing the next five physical books on my TBR that I’ll be reading. I’ll also be throwing a couple of Kindle books into the mix. ⁣ 🤫 True Story by Kate Reed Petty - this novel from @quercusbooks follows the fifteen year fallout from a poisonous high school rumour. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it from bookstagram so looking forward to it.⁣ ⁣ 🐮 The Cows by Dawn O’Porter - I’ve had this on my shelves for so long! It also comes highly recommended by @emmasbookishcorner who convinced me to bump it up my list. It’s a novel about three women, all who need to find their own voice. ⁣ ⁣ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The Glasgow Coma Scale - Neil D.A. Stewart - I’m not sure about this one. It doesn’t have the best ratings on Goodreads 🙈 but I’ll give it a shot. It’s a story about Scotland’s “second city,” of art, feelings and the redemptive power of an unconventional kind of love 🤔⁣ ⁣ 😱 Everything But The Truth - Gillian McAllister - I can’t believe I’ve taken so long to get round to the author’s debut novel! It’s a thriller about deceit, betrayal and one woman’s compulsive need to uncover the truth. I can’t wait to get to it. ⁣ ⁣ 🍸 Three Martini Lunch - Suzanne Rindell - An evocative, multilayered story of ambition, success and secrecy, this book is set in 1950’s New York and looks intriguing.
