THE PROPHETS ( ROBERT JONES, JR.)
A novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence. My favorite book!

Hello everyone, Happy New Year 🥳 Let’s hope for a better 2021 for each one of us. Today I’m sharing the next five physical books on my TBR. I’ll also be reading some Kindle books and listening to audiobooks but I’ll update you on these as and when.⁣ ⁣ 🔥 Bonfire by Krysten Ritter - highly recommended by @lovedreadingthis and @keeperofpages this is a book I’ve bumped up my list. Kerrie was also kind enough to send me this copy. This is a twisty, suspenseful tale that I’m really looking forward to. ⁣ ⁣ 🐇 The Looking Glass House by Vanessa Tait - this is written by the great-granddaughter of the girl who inspired Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. It hasn’t got brilliant reviews on Goodreads but I’m still going to give it a chance! ⁣ ⁣ ⚓️ The Devil And The Dark Water by Stuart Turton - I’m so excited to read this! I’m sure it’s going to be as complex and fascinating as the author’s previous novel and I look forward to getting stuck into an interesting mystery.⁣ ⁣ ❤️The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr - this debut novel was gifted to me by @quercusbooks (thank you so much to them) and tells the story of the love between two enslaved men on a Deep South plantation. I’ve got a really good feeling about this one. Could it be my first five star read of 2021?⁣ ⁣ 😱 Under The Skin - Michel Faber - this author is one of my favourites and I can’t believe I’ve left it this long to read this book! I’ve managed to successfully avoid all spoilers up until now so please don’t tell me if you know anything about the story 😅 Can’t wait to find out what everyone who has read this book is talking about. ⁣ ⁣ Have you read or want to read any of the books on this little pile? I’d love to know. Let’s have a chat in the comments! 🤗😘⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookworm #tbrpile #bonfire #krystenritter #thelookingglasshouse #vanessatait #thedevilandthedarkwater #stuartturton #theprophets #robertjonesjr #undertheskin #michelfaber https://www.instagram.com/p/CJgnpOQgjUy/?igshid=1km288dpdrej9

The Prophets - Robert Jones, Jr. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 What a heartrending, beautiful book. If you loved Song of Achilles, please read this as well. I started this book last year but my Libby subscription ran out, and was only able to get back to it this past month. This book traces the love story of Isaiah and James, two young enslaved Black men who grow up together on a plantation called Empty. It’s as soul-crushing as any plantation would be, and the text doesn’t shy away from the brutality, dehumanization, and violation they experience from their white captors, and even some of their fellow enslaved people when religious fervor takes hold. Jones does a beautiful job illustrating the insidious way religion could be used as a tool for consolidation of power, and how respectability politics can be a form of internalized hate turned outward. He writes this world with such lyrical beauty and refinement that it makes the horror of the subject even more starkly visible. Threads of the cultures the enslaved were abducted from remain, offering healing and protection through ritual magic, and the women allies of the protagonists derive strength through this connection to their ancestors. Flashbacks to the societies they were taken from drive home how much was stolen from the victims of the Atlantic slave trade. I especially think that fans of Song of Achilles Will appreciate this because the story of James and Isaiah is rendered by Jones like the love story in an epic tragedy. It has that expansive feel, and they are surrounded by rapacious foes and formidable allies that wouldn’t be out of place in The Iliad. I’ve been following Robert Jones Jr. on Facebook for his insights and excellent cultural commentary and I highly suggest you follow him wherever you follow people. His name - @thesonofbaldwin - clued me in that I’d be interested in whatever he had to say. #theprophets #bookreviews #bookstagram #reading #blackhistorymonth #readersofinstagram #books #audiobooks #bookrecs #blackauthors #blacklgbt #diversifyyourbookshelf #readblackauthors #bookreviews #instabooks #readthis #robertjonesjr #blackhistory #americanhistory #readinglist #bookrecommendations https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ1_KtHOwCN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Last ~ Current ~ Next 📚❤️💐 Just finished Untamed, which took way longer than expected because I stopped to ponder the meaning of life after every chapter, as one does 😆💭 I’m starting The Prophets today, which has gotten some amazing reviews from booksta buddies of mine, so I’m very excited to dive in 🌊☺️ My next planned read is The Witch’s Heart which I randomly picked up at the bookstore this past weekend because I have a problem and the problem is always needing more books 📖😅 Hope everyone had a lovely weekend! *************** #lastcurrentnext #februarybookchallenge #bookstacks #booksandflowers #currentlyreading📖 #bookstagram #readstagram #livrestagram #librostagram #livrostagram #untamed #glennondoyle #theprophets #robertjonesjr #thewitchsheartbook #genevievegornichec #readinglist2020 #readingislife #booksarebae (at Saint Augustine, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLUyRFcAl5U/?igshid=9ntc4jdkyuh9

Reposted from @thesonofbaldwin I was going to write something longer about the #KyleRittenhouse trial, but realized both the futility and the pointlessness of doing so.
The United States of America has an unbreakable, unshakeable commitment to the pathology of the white supremacist #capitalist #patriarchy from which it sprung.
Thus, its actions will always be nothing if not:
a. predictable
b. egocentric
c. hypocritical
d. treacherous
e. fatalistic
f. evil
So it never amazes me how intensely successful racism is in a country where everyone claims not to be racist.

Reposted from @yabablay finished teaching “White Supremacy and Beauty Politics” at @theslowfactory and saw the news.
(re)sharing a quote that guided us through the class. In case you’re trying to “make sense” of it.

Reposted from @ehimeora You gotta resurrect the deep pain that lives within you and give it a place to live that’s not within your body.
Let it live in art. Let it live in writing. Let it live in music. Let it be devoured by building brighter connections.

Your body is not a coffin for pain to be buried in. Put it somewhere else.

The Prophets review @SonofBaldwin #RobertJonesJr #TheProphets #historicalfiction #books #reading #Botm #bookofthemonth #lgbtq+ #AfricanAmericanliterature
Title: The Prophets Author: Robert Jones, Jr. Genre: African-American historical fiction Oh my, this book. Let me say right now that I absolutely loved it. But it’s not an easy book. The language is complex, but beautiful. The subject is about slavery, so you know going into it how difficult it will be to read about. But please don’t let this stop you from reading it. This story will stick…

Well I feel thoroughly spoilt. Last night Quercus has their Word Of Mouth Bestsellers evening virtually and it was incredible. I’ve gone to two IRL before and always had a lovely time but it was fantastic to see all the authors and talks from the comfort of my own home. This is the amazing goodie box that I was sent that includes chocolate, postcards, bookmarks, a face mask, badges, a notebook and three beautiful proofs of exciting novels coming out next year. Check out my current stories to see the talks I went to (will try to put them as a highlight too). I think it’s safe to say that I’m excited about every single book that was discussed! It’s going to be a brilliant year of reading ahead, I can already feel it. 😁 Thank you so much to @quercusbooks and @thetandemcollective for inviting me and for this generous package. I can’t wait to let you know what I think of the books! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #booknerd #bookevent #quercus2021 #thefinalrevivalofopalandnev #dawniewalton #madam #phoebewynne #theprophets #robertjonesjr #booksicantwaittoread #whataluckygirl https://www.instagram.com/p/CGp4XKSgnMM/?igshid=1dr98nmlusbh6
