He glanced up towards the front of the clinic when he heard a nurse call out 'Ollie Inoue?' and stood up, sliding his phone into his pocket. "Looks like time is up, sorry! Good luck on your STI tests," he added, patting Freddie on the shoulder as he went up to get his PReP prescription, and his clean bill of health. "See you later!" He called, perhaps to the room in general, rather than just Freddie, and headed off towards the exit.

"you watched the hangover when you were ten?" freddie raises a brow at that. it shined a little light on what ollie might've been like as a kid, though his imagination fails to stretch so far as to paint a full picture. he can't figure out what came first: the brains or the personality. watching the hangover at ten probably wasn't the turning point, though. "selling pictures of his feet," freddie corrects, as if it makes a difference, because he suspects that wouldn't be a secret either. "it probably wouldn't do too well, though. i'm sure it's all mangled up from... trampolining, is it?" something loser-ish. ollie's incentive saves his curiosity from dwindling. now, it's less about finding out what happened and more about getting this wish. he pauses for a moment, really trying to think. "did you... fuck his dad?"

I went and checked, by the way, because that seemed exactly like the right car in the right period of time, and indeed, all De Villes made from 1996 were equipped with the Northstar V8.

I made roughly this face.

To make a long story short, someone at Cadillac saw the legendarily good LS V8 they freely had available as part of General Motors and thought "You know what we should do? Spend an absolute fortune to develop a V8 of our own that fulfills exactly the same purpose". And apparently the people sensible enough to run the place were all on vacation, because lo and behold, we got the Northstar V8, a Cadillac-only V8 that was supposed to tell the world that Cadillac is still bangin', babey! We're not just throwing GM parts together here, we're putting in effort and making something serious, something unique, something Cadillac! Something whose together-keeping threads just shear off after a while. Woo, Cadillac. You were so brave for this one.

But since I don't wanna be all negative, let me tell you about what "98 polo green" made me think about!

In 1996, the Volkswagen Polo was coming out with new colors! And they were like "Let's show the motor show audiences our new colors in a fun, captivating way!" and so they made a Polo out of pieces of all the new colors!

And then they got a FLOOD of dealers shouting WE WANT THIS NOW and they were like "Oh all these new colors are coming in-" and they were like NO we want THIS and they were like "Ah Sheiße" (fuck) and so they begrudgingly took a set of four cars of four different colors off the production line, swapped their body panels around to create the color combinations you see below, and kept repeating the process until they got one entire thousand of Polo "Harlekin"s.

Which vaporized off the lot before they could say "That ought to be enough" in German (and in German it's just 5 syllables so that's saying something), so they upped the production to around 3800 total, which were sold over two years without letting the customers pick the color combination they got.

They also did this to the Golf for the US market (now spelling it 'Harlequin'), but they only made 264 and some of them had to be un-harlequin'd by reshuffling the different colored parts back into four uniformly colored cars (and sometimes just straight up repainted) to be moved off the lot. And they say it's Germans who lack sense of humor.

But I know what you are wondering - or at least, what you will react to with "fuck that's actually a very good question" upon reading: what the fuck do these cars' documents say under "color"? The answer is actually pretty logical (these are German cars after all): the car was one single color when it rolled off the production line, and while they bolted parts of different colors onto it, that color remains in the non-replaceable elements like roof, sills, rear pillar, and all the inside parts like door seams, engine bay, underside and what have you - so that is the color the car legally is.

So yeah man there's your fun facts about the Cadillac De Ville.

It is time! I've finally managed to get this warp onto the loom. Which usually don't take me *this* long. But I'd done a fair few errors while winding half of it, so my cross was all to shit. But now it's all sorted out and ready to be threaded.

The warp is one thread cotton (16/2? I'm guessing, cuz it's an old cone found in a second hand shop), And one thread handspun (by me) Gotland, held together. About a DK-Sport on the wool. Gonna weave it into two small carpets to put on the side of our bed. A fairly simple MW pattern. The effect will be very subtle, but nice enough.

The sett is 40threads/10cm. 264 threads over 66cm. Which is nice, cuz that's not a lot of threads. So it shouldn't take me too too long to get going.

Radeon PRO V710 For Cloud Gaming, AI/ML On Microsoft Azure

AMD Radeon PRO V710

Radeon PRO V710 from AMD is now available on Microsoft Azure. The Radeon PRO V710, the newest GPU in AMD’s family of visual cloud GPUs, was unveiled today. New capabilities for the public cloud are brought by the Radeon PRO V710, which is now available on Microsoft Azure in private preview.

Using the open-source AMD ROCm software, the 54 Compute Units of the AMD Radeon PRO V710, in conjunction with 28GB of VRAM, 448 GB/s memory transfer rate, and 54MB of L3 AMD Infinity Cache technology, facilitate light to medium ML inference workloads and small model training.

When combined with support for PCI Express SR-IOV compliant hardware virtualization, instances built around the Radeon PRO V710 may provide strong isolation between different virtual machines operating on the same physical GPU as well as between the host and guest environments. Excellent performance per watt is made possible by the effective RDNA 3 design, which also allows for a single slot, passively cooled package factor that complies with PCIe CEM specifications.

Modern PC games can run smoothly with complex visual effects enabled due to AMD Infinity Cache technology and outstanding ray tracing performance compared to AMD RDNA 2. For streaming, hardware video encoders enable AV1, HEVC (H.265), and AVC (H.264). Machine learning computational speed is enhanced with the inclusion of AI accelerators for effective matrix multiplication and support for AMD’s open-source ROCm software.

Cloud gaming, AI/ML use cases, desktop-as-a-service, and workstation-as-a-service are all excellent fits for the Radeon PRO V710.

A series of instances built on the Radeon PRO V710 and tailored for various GPU-accelerated applications will be available via Microsoft Azure. Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) will support V710-based Linux virtual machines in addition to Windows and Linux operating systems, making the deployment of container-based workflows easier.

NVads V710 V5-series

AMD Radeon Pro V710 GPUs and AMD EPYC 9374F (Genoa) CPUs, which have a base frequency of 3.8 GHz and an all-core max frequency of 4.3 GHz, power the NVads V710 v5 series virtual machines. Virtual machines (VMs) use AMD’s Simultaneous Multithreading technology to allocate specific vCPU threads to every VM. VMs running Linux and Windows are supported.

Five configurations are available in the series, ranging from a complete V710 GPU with a 24-GiB frame buffer to a 1/6 of a GPU with a 4-GiB frame buffer. To utilize AMD GPU-based virtual machines, no additional GPU license is needed. NVMe is also supported by the NVads V710 v5 virtual machines for ephemeral local storage.

In order to provide a smooth end user experience and a cost-effective option for a broad spectrum of graphics-enabled virtual desktop experiences, the NVads V710 v5-series supports right-sizing for demanding GPU-accelerated graphics apps and cloud-based virtual desktops.
