thoughts on Thousand Autumns

I forgot I’d written a full on part by part commentary on episode 1 of Thousand Autumns/千秋 donghua edition. Well, here it is!

Oh wow someone got the good... guzheng? Something in that family of instruments anyway. They got the good music for that. And the animation is beautiful and beautifully synchronised to the clip excerpts.

And the imagery! The opening with the symbol of the Tao, and then main character number 1, Shen Qiao, all in white, in a fantastically and subtly ornamented outfit - I love the textures of the cloth they put in on the animation here, cloth and clothes textures are so easy to get wrong and they’ve done it beautifully here. I think this is supposed to be Shen Qiao’s original sect leader/zhangjiao outfit and he looks properly leaderly in it.

And this, followed by a closeup of Yan Wushi’s hand holding the that ring of contention, and then Yan Wushi himself, very handsomely rendered in 3d animation - and again I have to voice my appreciation of the cloth textures. That’s actual subtly 3d brocade textures they’re rendering there, with the correct flow for how cloth hangs on the body, and the correct variances of light on the areas with thicker brocade and it is, frankly, very impressive. And they didn’t lose colour saturation doing it either, making that purple robe look suitably luxurious. The shiny hair ornament and one sidebang in white is a nice touch as well. As are the hints they set right in the opening that Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi are ... opposites, and complements, in a sense, as the Tao complements itself.

So much love for this opening song it’s so good. Also going to be a pain to translate accurately with a proper sense of the poetry of it, but so good.

Alright episode 1 proper, 风雨欲来. The coming of the wind and rain, literally, I think. Maybe even the foreboding or oncoming storm, if you’re going for the feel of the term instead of literal translation. Oh. Oh that opening montage with the bird’s eye view and the fog and the high mountains - I was so taken by this scenery I sketched and tried to paint it at least 3 times. It’s a very moving shot. Also very much in the grand tradition of xianxia/wuxia, and also, even without a word, hinting at the traditional stance of the Mt Xuandu sect - to 出世， to remove themselves from the world to cultivate in the seclusion and clarity of the literal peaks above the clouds and dust of the world.

Oh. Oh that opening shot. The challenge to combat by Kunye to Shen Qiao. The.. subtle and ornate embroidery and brocade and patterning on Shen Qiao’s sect leader robes so awesome. The wave motifs repeated in the 3 layers of robes, even on the hair ornament/冠 in his hair, the resolute look on his face! The closeup shot of the 山河同悲 sword - and what a name for it. A sword named for, if I may be excused poetry in translation - compassion and pity and fellow feeling for the griefs and pains and trials of the world as encompassed by the mountains and rivers - what a blade, and what a name, and what a bearer that would be worthy of it. A very good hint, at the kind of person Shen Qiao is, even before they have him open his mouth.

The contrasting costuming decision for Kunye et al is also very nice, hinting at the cultural differences between, say, the peoples that live on the central plains and the more nomadic groups living on less kindly land, shown in the different materials available/preferred - leather, furs, etc  vs cloth, silk, cotton etc

And the fight choreography! So nice! the 3d animation works really well here,in that there’s no limitation to the capabilities of human bodies and it’s possible to really show in the visual medium the knock out drag down fight between 2 people who’s martial - and quasi magical - capabilities are already at potentially mountain splitting levels. Not to mention also, showing that a Shen Qiao who isn’t being handicapped by sabotage... really can wipe the floor with Kunye if he wants to. And then, of course, once the fight gets to Half-step Peak and they’re out of sight of inconvenient witnesses, the signal for the ambush. And then the effects of the sabotage take hold.

Ah, flashback to 20 years ago, to provide the audience with the world info we need to understand the rest of the story. Not to mention informing us why Hulugu would even bother. Or why Kunye coming in to challege Shen Qiao is so narratively important. And also introducing the ring that so mny would fight over later.

Yan Wushi’s character introduction.. is quite something. As is Yu Shengyan’s. Ah, Shizun, congratulations on exiting your 10year cultivation seclusion, would you like the highlights on the changes in the world in the past 10years? But also a good show of character, because they have him not even looking at Yu Shengyan, but looking away in the distance, and telling him to only tell the most important bits, he’s not interested in useless words. Also serves as a nice introduction to some people who’ll be important later, and giving us a time marker for when Shen Qiao ascended to the sect leader post - 5 years ago, after the death of his shizun Qi Fengge. Ah Yan Wushi, your characteristically arrogant attitude - aside from Qi Fengge, who in life was worthy of being the first among all the wuxia world, the rest are not worth even mentioning. And here too a little hint that Yan Wushi might care a little bit in some way for those who are his, including his disciples - He tells Yu Shengyan that this location, this Half Step Peak that they’re at, because of its physical characteristics, is good for him to cultivate to the next level of understanding/enlightenment of the martial arts used by Huanyue Sect.

I love it whenever they hint that the more... developed characters whose martial arts are very good have improved senses. A little flow of blood in the water, Yu Shengyan notices something is wrong, looks at his shizun, and receives a nod of affirmation that he perceived correctly and should take action. And then after that, they come upon a body of one of the Mt Xuandu disciples, and Yan Wushi’s verbal remark that today, Mt Xuandu is troubled and not pure and clean. And then Shen Qiao literally falls from the cliff top - and the pan up makes it very clear that for most people, this is a lethal fall.

And then the surviving ambushers attempt to finish the job when Yu Shengyan checks whether Shen Qiao is still alive... and Yan Wushi takes the training opportunity when he sees it, and tells his disciple to use his strongest techniques to take on the remaining assassins. And then, when Yu Shengyan can't quite wipe the floor with them... criticizes his lack of growth, as might be expected of Yan Wushi, and steps in to really wipe the floor with the assassins, as might Not be expected of Yan Wushi. Also doubles as a really nice display to the audience of his level of strength. In fact.. listening to the voice, I think one of those assassins appears, unhidden, in later episodes. Heh. Plot continuity, a nice one. As is the assassins having common sense, recognising Yan Wushi's infamous technique, and running before they're cut down.

Ahahahaha yes Yu Shengyan, your shizun really had you pick that fight for training, and he's really about to pick up Shen Qiao and have him rescued on a whim. Also nice to review, on rewatch for the details, that part of this whim is perhaps curiousity as to Shen Qiao's ability to survive and/or recover, as hinted by the thin thread of strength provided by the Zhuyang Ce, that Yan Wushi identifies as the thin strength keeping him alive, despite the aforementioned lethal fall.

Heh. Yu Shengyan – and maybe Huanyue Sect's other job – information gatherers aka spies.

Ah, Yan Wushi, you really are fascinated by people's reactions under stress, aren't you.

Shen Qiao awakens! Oof, the amount of damage – can't see, amnesia – damaged or even broken meridians – the donghua doesn't mention how much time passes, but given that Yu Shengyan mentions that Shen Qiao's broken bones have only just finished healing – could not have been a matter of days. Weeks, maybe even a month, minimum. Unless Yu Shengyan meant that the bones have only just been set – which could mean a few days. And then the mindscrew from Yan Wushi, telling poor amnesiac Shen Qiao that, yes, your name is Shen Qiao, oh, and you are one of my disciples from Huanyue Sect! Someone sure is hasty to put his poke the injured person plans into action! Ah Yan Wushi, if you could please give Shen Qiao a break, he just had a near death experience! But also – the scope of the injuries – yes, it benefits Yan Wushi's plotting but also – Shen Qiao was injured beyond the scope of ordinary medicine? Yu Shengyan has to be stationed to basically care for him until he is able to awaken – and presumably recover – appropriately!

Alright, time marker, 3 months after previous events.. okay. Shen Qiao can walk, some, though the animators were careful to make it a clearly pained walk, in comparison to how he was moving pre-Kunye fight. And then of course the blindness, which may also explain how they've animated him moving with more cautious steps. And the coughing, and the eyes that can't focus – all in all, a detailed and careful show of how badly injured Shen Qiao still is. Can't help sniggering at every 'shidi' I'm hearing him say though. And Yu Shengyan... yes, really, even though you and your shizun can't quite believe it, there really is a person this kind and considerate of other people.

The appearance of the weiqi board motif! Strategy, and planning, and part of the arts of the refined gentlemen..and the hint of how Shen Qiao is perceiving/visualising the input that he hears, since he can't see right now. And the hint that he might be using qi to help sort through what he hears – well enough that he can identify it's a weiqi board, and even the piece being placed. Very Awesome. Especially when they show Yan Wushi possibly testing Shen Qiao's capability to perceive the world around him by hesitating and purposely not putting down his piece.. and Shen Qiao very naturally picking up the piece – black, the correct colour and the one Yan Wushi was about to play – and putting it in the correct position on the board that Yan Wushi was about to place. Is it any wonder that the next thing Yan Wushi checks is the state of his recovery?

And then we have Yan Wushi's characteristic multipronged planning – creating trouble for Hehuan sect, training for Yu Shengyan, testing opportunity for Shen Qiao. Very excellent, any and every outcome has benefit to Yan Wushi.

Ah the encounter at the medicine shop. Hm. Okay, the sharing of the medicine is clearly a hint to Yan Ziwen of some kind that he and his should be especially cautious tonight, perhaps even to run for their lives tonight. Though it's maybe a hint in the actions, and not the words, because the words don't sound suspicious at all. Neither do the actions, if you were watching as a observer and didn't know Yan Ziwen's paranoid character – a blind person would unsurprisingly wish to be extra careful where they put their hands. And at night, on the attack... for all that Shen Qiao can't quite see, and is currently relying on the rest of his senses... he can tell that something's off about Yu Shengyan's actions. And then... Shen Qiao remembers... the sword, and what Qi Fengge taught him. And then the confrontation, and the near strangulation by Yan Wushi... Shen Qiao has such a nice literary register to his speech. Four word phrases even under severe near strangled stress, with the right philosophical meaning to make his point to Yan Wushi. And then the reveal of Yan Wushi's plotting. Very nicely done.

And now, the first of Yan Wushi's many many invitations to Shen Qiao to forsake his daoist path and join Yan Wushi's ... evil sect is not the right word. Demonic path is technically correct but has moral overtones that don't fit. Join Yan Wushi's cultivation path, maybe. Join and get bloody revenge on everyone who's wronged Shen Qiao – and already there are so many of them. And we the audience wonder for half a second – is he going to do it? Is this going to be a revenge story? And Shen Qiao flat out refuses in words, in the first of many times. And then Shen Qiao walks away from Yan Wushi. Here the animation is a delight again – the audience gets to see the little micro expressions that flit across – he's actually walking away?! And then Yan Wushi does his dramatic gifting of the bamboo stick. And too, a few seconds later, the reveal of their movements being spied on by Duan Wenyang, and Yu Shengyan's orders to continue searching for .. something. Ah, the plotting in Thousand Autumns. Always a delight.

Ep 1: Filigree Inlay

One of Eight Beijing Imperial Handicrafts, it's a traditional Chinese craft to deal with fine gold that has been passed down for over 2000 years. It originated from metal inlay of bronze casting technology as early as in pre-Imperial China. It dates far back to Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period, peaking in Ming and Qing dynasties with exquisite craftsmanship, aesthetic pursuit and sumptuous styles.

It uses gold threads and slices to decorate utilitarian objects such as bronzeware and weapons. With the development in the Sui, Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties, Filigree Inlay was increasingly applied in jewellery making.

The terms Filigree Inlay refers to weaving gold thread into jewel and inlaying with different jewels, starting with Thread Drawing, Shaping, Laying and then Filling.

Gold Chalice of Eternal Stability

In the second year of Jiaqing, it was made in a workshop of the Internal Affairs Department of the Qing Dynasty. Carved with Baoxing flower patterns, with pearls, rubies and sapphires on the stamens. On every New Year's eve, the court would hold Kaibi ceremony to celebrate children's first day at school. This was the drinking vessel for emperor's praying.

Ming Dynasty Empress's Crown

Inlaid with thousands of pearls and hundreds of natural gems. Besides Filigree Inlay, Tian-tsui craft was also used in a complicated pattern.

Ming Dynasty Gold Thread Imperial Crown with Wings

Unearthed from Emperor Wanli's tomb and now stored in Dingling museum, all the weaved parts have no joints or fractures to be seen. The remarkable consistency makes it the representative artwork of Filigree Inlay craft. 518 gold threads were used in the original work with the thinnest threads being less than 0.2 mm wide, many masters attempted to replicate it but with a much higher numbers of threads.

Seriously, like...stuff happens and then...20 years ago stuff happened and then more stuff happens and like...then there’s a whole USELESS explanation of sects and, like...what?  IDK  IDEK. 

I’m into it.  I’m probably going to watch this whole show like:  That’s Blind Dude Main Character Cinnamon Roll and that’s Ridiculously Extra Evil Tiddie Dude and his henchman Not!Jiang Cheng, but like, okay.

I suddenly understand what it’s like to watch one of these shows without knowing the plot and characters already.  It’s...much harder!!

The Freedom of Expression Ep 27 - 'Identification rate 94%!' The dogs trained to detect Covid-19.

K: Ok, This is  Dir en grey's Kaoru, with this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome. Um, We're recording this at the beginning of August, right?

J: Yes, thats right.

K: Hanshin have moved up just a little bit.

T: They have, yeh.

K: Just a little bit.

J: What position are they in now?

K: Fourth place, I think.

T: Oooh.

K: But they were in third place at one point.

T: Yeh, yeh.

J: Ohhh

K: Last month they only had five losses. Just going by last month, Hanshin were top.

J: Oh really? What do they need to do to get up to first place?

K: Well, they just have to win. 

T, J: Hahahha

K: They just have to win.

T: But, I mean, their pitcher has a good aim.

K: Yeah. Fujinami has been throwing well recently, batting has been a bit up and down, but now its ???*1

J: Ah, wasn't there that incredible day?

K: Oh, on that day it went downhill right at the end.

T: That happens a lot in baseball.

J: Is that so?

K: Well, there is still more to come.

J: Is there?

T: This year has been interesting.

J: Maybe its a good thing that the schedule has been really tight.

K: Yeh, cause its maybe good for getting get on the right track.

J: Oh, cause there isn't many gaps between games right?

T: Well, anyway, as for today's topic...Detection rate 94%, trained by German researchers...what do you think it is, Joe san? Successfully trained..?

J: What...leading on from Hanshin..what could it be?

K: Weren't you about to say it?

J: I thought you would just say it. *2

K: *To Tasai* He isn't getting it, so..

J: This could've gone better *3

T: Ok, the answer is successfully trained...covid detection dogs.

J: Dogs! Doggies!

T: There are lots of types of sniffer dogs aren't there?

J: Yeh, yeh, yeh.

T: But now there are dogs whose sharp sense of smell has been used to detect people who are infected with Covid-19. Its research from the University of Vetinary Medicine in Hannover,  Germany.

Dogs were trained to recognize deactivated (so the dogs wouldn't get infecteced) saliva samples, and bronchi, or throat secretions of positive covid-19 patients. After this the dogs were shown samples from both covid-positive people and covid-negative people, and succeeded in recognizing  94% of the positive samples.

J: Amazing! In that case you don't need a PCR test?

T: Yes, they said exactly that, it could be used in addition to PCR tests. *4 Do you know how much stronger dogs sense of smell is, compared to a human's? Joe san? Kaoru san?

K: A hundred times? Ten times?

J: A thousand times?

T: Its one hundred million times stronger.

J: Ah, amazing!

T: Well, with that level they are used to detect drugs, weapons, and there are even dogs that can detect pirated DVD disks.

J: Incredible!

T: And in the medical field, in the same way that some dogs can smell cancer from a patient's urine or breath, these dogs are detecting covid.

J: Ehh

T: One of the most troublesome apects about fighting covid, is the symptomless cases, well, people who are unaware that they are infected. So there is a trend of people carrying on their lives unaware of it, but if the dogs recognize it, those people can be warned. These sniffer dogs are now being actively introduced  around the world, in Chile, and the UK for example. In Chile, training was completed in Autumn, and the dogs are to be used in bus stations, airports etc.

J: Ehh, amazing! This is kinda surprising news.

T: Isn't it great?!

K: Yeh.

J: This is great.

K: The PCR test is ???*5, right?

T: Yeh

Kami: Um..

J: Yep?

Kami: 94% right? Im inside that remaining 6%.

J: Haha, why? What is your rationale behind that?

Kami: Well, its really humid recently, right? And my laundry won't dry. So even if I wash it, it still stinks a lot.

J, K: Hahaha

J: Dogs can't stand that smell either?

Kami: It you wash something, and then leave it there to dry, it starts to stink a lot doesn't it?

J: Yeah, it does.

K: Half dried smell.

Kami: What do you call that? My clothes smell like that, but even if I re-wash them, the smell never comes out.

J: Well, if you've tried washing it, you'll just have to throw it out.

K: Oh, what about boiling it in a pan?

J: Boiling it?!

T: Eh?! Boil it?

K: Yeh, if you put the clothes into a pan of boiling water, let it boil for a bit, then squeeze it  out and re-wash it..

J: It'll be ok after that? The smell will be gone?

K: It will disappear.

T: Well, yeh, cause the smell is bacteria.

J: Yeh, yeh, its bacteria.

T: So you kill it with hot water.

J: Yeah, but its awful being stinky, Kami.

T: It is bad, right.

Kami: The smell has filled my room. I coudn't get rid of it, so I sprayed de-oderizer everywhere.

J: Kami, just go to the laundrette! Do you know what that is?

Kami: Yeah. I know what it is, I know what it is.

J: Ok, go there then. Stop trying to dry laundry in your room. The rainy season has already finished, but it was quite a long rainy season this year, so you could just go to the laundrette and get it all dry in one shot?

Kami: Really?

J: Of course!

T: Haha

J: What are you talking about, Kami?!

Kami: Ehh? It doesn't get stinky at the laundrette?

J: I don't think so...

T: If you use a dryer it'll be done in one go.

J: Right?

Kami: If I don't go inside those 6% of people, it means its complete?

J: Yeh. For the dogs' sake too, Kami, please use the laundrette.

K: The dogs will be fine though, won't they?

Kami: I want them to do this with the dogs, even if someone is wearing stagnant smelling clothes.

T: For sure, hahaha.

K: But if their sense of smell is a hundred million times more that ours, they would smell it from far away. Either that or it would be one hundred million times more stinky for them, haha.

J, T: Hahaha

J: They would collapse.

K: If its a hundred million times what we can smell, thats pretty bad.

J: It would be insane training with Kami's smell. Knocking the dogs out one after the next. His smell is worse than corona.

T: Incredible.

J: Well *getting serious*, will this mean we'll see an increase in dogs in our towns?

T: Yeah.

J: If the Olympics goes ahead in Japan next year, we can use these covid dogs.

T: There is that too, yeh.

J: If people start saying that PCR tests take up a lot of time and effort, there are loads of dogs like drug detection sniffer dogs.

So here’s my dilemma. Thanks to the pandemic and my own, non-COVID-related health issues, I don’t have a big personal budget nowadays. Now, we know that YOUKU suddenly decided to offer us VIP through YouTube with three episodes of Word of Honor left to release. They’re hiding the upcoming concert behind the highest level paywall. I don’t trust them to release the special episode with the “real” ending outside the paywall. (Nobody understands corporations paywalling the happiness of fictional characters quite like a longtime Choices player. Do you know how many sad-eyed animals I paid for my main characters to adopt?) I would really like to be able to binge those last three eps if possible (and get the pain over with all at once). So here are my options:

1. Pay for the high-level VIP and cancel after the concert. This would definitely be a one-time purchase, because I sure as bleep can’t afford 20 bucks a month, especially if we’re not guaranteed more BL content in the near future. (If I were going to do that, Tencent would be a better option, between the upcoming Immortality and various donghua like MDZS, Thousand Autumns and Scumbag System).

2. Pay for the low-level VIP, not get the concert, but be able to binge the last three eps and keep the membership in case they DO put out more BL content. I’m sort of leaning toward this option now. Three bucks a month is definitely more affordable than 20.

3. Don’t pay at all, patiently wait for the free releases of the last three eps Monday-Wednesday, and trust I will be able to find the special episode uploaded somewhere outside of YouTube. Yes, I’ve been spoiled for the content of that episode, but I will NEED to see it with my own eyes at the end of the series proper - especially if the end of 36 is as big a bummer as I’ve heard it is.

Hello dear friends the time has come for me to once again recommend everyone go listen to Friends at the Table. What is Friends at the Table (f@tt)? “Friends at the Table is an actual play podcast focused on critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interaction between good friends.” If you’re a fan of TAZ you may have heard Griffin mention it as his personal favorite actual play podcast, so if you don’t take my rec, take Griffin’s. It slaps. It’s super diverse, fun, and compelling, and the care taken with the craft of storytelling throughout just warms my heart. The fact that every f@tt fan I know has a different favorite season is a testament to how great it is- what you like is just a matter of personal taste because it's all good as hell. 

Speaking of seasons, you might be wondering where you should start, because there’s a whole bunch of options! So here’s a brief intro into every season and the reasons you might wanna or not wanna start there.

Season 1: Autumn in Hieron- You could start at the very beginning, if you’re committed to consuming all the f@tt content or really like ghost pirates (who doesn’t?). Autumn is the first part of their Seasons of Hieron series, an ongoing high fantasy saga that features many of the same recurring playing characters. Autumn is definitely a good time, and a great place to start, since it is, ya know, the start, but the audio quality is pretty rough at certain points and it is definitely slower than later seasons. If you want to skip Autumn and still listen to later Hieron seasons, that’s a super valid option, and they have summary episodes that condense the action of the first season for what you will need to know for Seasons of Hieron moving forwards.

Season 2: Counter/Weight- This is where I started! Counter/Weight is the first of their sci-fi seasons, a cyberpunk mech adventure. Unlike Seasons of Hieron, while their sci-fi seasons all take place in the same universe, they take place thousands of years apart and have no repeating characters between them, so you don’t necessarily need to start here at the beginning. Counter/Weight also starts a little bit slow in my opinion, but once it takes off (they swap what game system they are playing with about ⅓ of the way through the season, and they’re much more comfortable with the second system), it TAKES OFF, MAN. Come cry with me about Orth Godlove, come laugh with me about Lazer Ted, and fuck capitalism. Guys, I cannot stress enough how good Counter/Weight is.

Edit- Important caveat, (thank you, @waveridden, for reminding me) C/W has a few they/them characters and the cast does not do a good job remembering their correct pronouns. In later seasons they absolutely improve and multiple cast members come out as trans, but fair warning that this is a definite problem during Counter/Weight. 

Season 2.5: Marielda- This is maybe the most common answer I’ve heard of where to start. Austin, the GM, designed Marielda as a sort of introductory mini-season to what makes Friends at the Table unique. It’s the story of a bunch of knowledge-brokers doing high-stakes heists in an industrial fantasy city. If you want to dip your toes into f@tt before diving in, this is the place to be. It’s a manageable 14 episodes, with two of those episodes being worldbuilding. It’s technically a prequel season to Seasons in Hieron but because it’s a prequel you don’t really need to be familiar with Hieron (Though you may occasionally be confused by a proper noun or two. When in doubt, those proper nouns are the names of gods in the Hieron pantheon. Especially if their name starts with “Sam”). Marielda slaps very hard. Join us, enthuse about TRAIN DAY, and bop to some clarinets. 

Season 3: Winter in Hieron- This is a good place to start if you want to hop on board right into the thick of Seasons of Hieron and prefer fantasy to sci-fi. I highly recommend listening to the summary eps of Autumn, but once you’ve done that you can dive right in. It’s very good. That’s a common theme, every season is very good. There’s some wonderful new characters in Winter and a lot of great worldbuilding. I hope you like moths.

Season 4: Twilight Mirage- The second of their sci-fi seasons, taking place in the same universe as Counter/Weight but way later so you don’t need to have listened to Counter/Weight though you may miss a reference. Where Counter/Weight is anti-capitalist cyberpunk, Twilight Mirage is utopian. It’s an interesting season philosophically (the GM was a philosophy major and it’s time for that to shine) and has a lot of very positive vibes, so start with Twilight Mirage if that sounds like your idea of a good time. 

Season 5: Spring in Hieron- Gonna be real this is the only one you almost definitely shouldn’t start with, since it’s the finale of Seasons of Hieron. But if for some reason you want to, you can listen to summary eps of Winter and Autumn and maybe be okay but like. I wouldn’t recommend it. It is a great season, you just probably shouldn’t start with it.

Season 6: Partizan- The third of their sci-fi seasons, and the one that is currently ongoing. Partizan explores sci-fi politics and revolutions and it features some of my favorite characters in the podcast. Start here if you want to listen along as new episodes are released and participate in the fan culture around that. Once again, you don’t need to have listened to Counter/Weight or Twilight Mirage, but you may miss a few nods. 

Bonus Season!: Bluff City- Bluff City was originally only available for Patreon supporters, but is currently available for free to all! Bluff City is a series of oneshots in wild and funky systems that all coexist in an alternate version of Atlantic City. It explores a lot of topics like crabs, wrestling, censorship, ghost hunting, and teen superheroes. The tone varies wildly from ep to ep based on what system they are playing but it’s always a party. If you just wanna commit to a one shot or two before deciding if you wanna get into f@tt, start here.

TLDR: You’re probably gonna want to start with Counter/Weight (cyberpunk mech season) or Marielda (shorter fantasy heist season), based on your genre preferences, but you could pick pretty much every season except Spring as a good starting point based on your personal taste.

Heya there’s no calendar if I recall like u would have seen with usual cdramas and like MDZS donghua etc.

But it’s 1 episode a week on Monday at 10am GMT+8 for non-VIP on Tencent/WeTV, and VIPs will be two eps ahead for example this coming Monday non-VIP get ep 2 and VIP get ep 4. On March 15 VIP holders will get early access for the rest of the eps until the finale.

Launchpad announce the thirty three Welsh artists and three record labels to receive grant funding for 2021

Launchpad announce the thirty three Welsh artists and three record labels to receive grant funding for 2021. The fund is part of Horizons – a partnership between BBC Cymru Wales and Arts Council of Wales investing in and platforming original music talent.

This is Launchpad’s most diverse list of awards yet with fourteen female artists and sixteen black musicians and artists of colour from a range of genres receiving funding to aid their music and creative work, spotlighting the exciting growth of MOBO (music of black origin) throughout Wales.

In what has been a really tough year for the  music sector amidst lockdowns and a global pandemic, Launchpad sees forty thousand pounds in total awarded to a diverse mix of musicians as they take the next steps in their career. Additionally Horizons will be offering the awardees aritist-centred music business training. Also for the first time ever Welsh labels High Grade Grooves(Caernarfon), Recordiau Jingcal(Cardiff), Something Out of Nothing Records(Cardiff) will receive funding, as Launchpad looks to deepen its support of the grassroots imprints that foster and platform talent.

Since its inception in 2014, the Launchpad fund has been awarded to over 200 artists, from over 60 towns across the whole of Wales, investing £210,000 in the Welsh music ecosystem.  

Many have been supported in their creative work with the fund enabling them to utilise studio time, specially commissioned photography and artwork, promotion of releases, equipment, video production and touring costs. For the thirty three artists awarded funding this year this is their first step on their Horizons journey, that could in the future include artist development, promotion and showcases sets at major festivals.

The applications were selected by a panel made up of twenty five members - including Super Furry Animals’ Cian Ciarian, Producers Gethin Pearson, Kris Jenkins, band manager Ryan Richards, singer Casi, and BBC Radio Cymru host Rhys Mwyn and many more bloggers, performers, managers and others from the UK music industry.

Panelist Tumi Williams (Afrocluster and Bombard Agency) says:

"Great to see a wide, varied pool of artists apply for launchpad this year. The sheer quality of music, across various genres is incredibly promising for the Welsh music scene. I was honoured to be part of such a rigorous selection process that ensured equality, diversity and support towards Wales' most deserving artists."

Female fronted rock band Mawpit say:  

“We are so thrilled to be selected for the funding! We’ve been planning on recording an EP for a few months now and thanks to Horizons this is going to be possible. We can now afford to record our music in a studio and pay for engineers / producers. We've had a brilliant start in 2020 and gained a lot of support since our first single was released so we are very excited to keep that momentum going with new music.”

Horizons will be announcing the awardees with a week-long multi-platform virtual festival highlighting the new talent, from home sessions, to online discussions. At the end of each year, we ask post-rock listeners to share their favorite releases and new acts with us. Today we’re excited to announce the sixth edition of our year-end polls:  Post-rock Listeners’ Choice: Best Releases of the Year & Best New Acts

To be nominated for the “Best Releases of the Year”, an artist must have released music between December 13, 2016 and December 12, 2017. Albums coming out after December 12, 2017 will be considered for nomination in next year’s awards.

In order for a band or musician to be nominated for the “Best New Acts”, they must have released their debut during this past year.
