something else i thought was really interesting about i saw the tv glow was the way that there's never really talk about like...the pink opaque as fiction/the pink opaque as a creative work - which makes perfect sense since within the movie as a fable, the pink opaque is a metaphor and is moreover more real than "reality," but on the fandom-engagement level it stood out to me!

i'm again speaking from experiences about a generation removed from the 90s/early aughts era and i think there's very much something to be said of modern fandom and the way it's moved into this weird space of desiring validation/"canonicity" from showrunners, much to do with the ease of accessibility to those people. two kids in the jersey suburbs in the 1990s wouldn't be able to just reach out to the pink opaque writers the way that a contemporary audience can dm/reply to/etc. showrunners on social media etc now. but even so, it's a glaring sort of absence - when we see the pink opaque opening theme, the character names show up where you'd expect actor names (and where actor names do show up in the buffy theme, which was a major inspiration). we don't know how long it's been on the air or who created it or where "the county" even is (because it doesn't matter, because the suburbs are the same everywhere forever)

we know it's at least a pseudo-popular series - it runs for five seasons, and merch exists (the episode guide maddy has in the beginning) - but because the film is essentially a two-hander we don't see a wider world engaging with it. because isn't that how it always is? the story is what you make it.

and the streaming version in the third act pushes this even further - it's a different show entirely, again because isttvg is a fable, it's not a literal movie, and it pushes you against a literalist reading. it's different because owen/isabel is miserable and can't even take solace in this thing she loved anymore. it's different because if you watch something alone it's a world away from watching it with your friend. it's different because somebody ripped out its heart.

i DO think. dani and jorge are aware of what is going on and i think it’s met with. remember this is in the wake of vale turning the gun on marc and jorge and the nation of spain. minimal but still present sympathy. like the interesting thing about the aliens in this time period where they’re all beating the snot out of each other every weekend is that no one else is on their level or really understands them OR spends as much time with them as EACH OTHER. especially bc they’re paired off as teammates and in the same presscons and for podiums !! like they have to socialize !! it’s a necessity !! but they’re ALSO all in a four way collarbone dependent high stakes stand-off for the same fucking goal. so everyone (not dani really. he’s like that is fucked up but also trulyyyyy none of my business. a lil miffed but not like. marc level hurt or jorge level GOD i hate everyone in this bar. you know.) is RIGHTLY pissed off at vale but also. not really aligning with each other. they are not unionizing this is motogp we don’t do that here. or at least with marc lol. like they recognize it’s all wackadoodle clownshow but are also very much not close enough to marc at this time to really be the shoulder he leans on. and he doesn’t want to lean on them !!

so all this to sayyyyyy that they would be the only two people besides marc and vale with the full emotional context of the FCO plot universe. and would have no one to talk about it to but each other ❤️ and this is a gut feeling but i feel that they would LOVEEEEEEEEE to shit talk the rosquez-crazy, despite they themselves ignoring their five alarm level repression issues that are just barely keeping them from making out in the hallway outside the presscon room multiple times a weekend. they’re like wow thank god we aren’t that bad [was much worse for many years]

and then a fco au for them independently is. jorge addicted to instagram lorenzo and dani if i ignore it hard enough it will go away pedrosa. maybe the yaoi couple on the motogp grid LEAST equipped to deal with the fallout of a situation like that, ESPECIALLY in comparison to smiling assassins incorporated, who are happily (miserably.) lying to the press across the garage. like do pedrenzo even rope hondayamaha pr into it ? i don’t think so !

So the funny thing in I Saw the TV Glow is of course that in-universe, The Pink Opaque's ending must be weird AF. Like, we don't talk about it because it works just too well as a metaphor, but that teens' TV show absolutely did end with both main character getting buried alive and kind of left there.

Except that, of course, our world has got wildly popular TV shows with similar ending, too.

So, may I propose the mental image:

You are out here, living your life. It kind of sucks, like there is this thing that isn't quite right, but you don't know what it is, so you are kind of existing without any greater joys or passions, but what can one do. Then your old friend, whom you haven't seen in ten years, randomly shows up, looking somewhat hectic, and announce: "So, remember that old TV show, Blake's 7? Turns out, I am actually Blake. Planning some pottery apron designs that can be embroidered and they'll be adorable!! I can use a POD service (like RedBubble) to have the orders fulfilled

BUT

Have found only ONE (SO FAR) with what looks like good quality thick fabric AND pockets. Pockets are a must.

Problem is it takes 11 to 14 days to ship to the US after its embroidered with my design.

I don't think people will be okay with buying something that takes 11 to 14 days to be made and then another however many days to ship...

I have all these ideas for such cute things but I'm so unsure
