So like, Strike Back is such an underrated and unknown show, but it’s one of my favorites. I just got past the middle of season 8, and I am broken. The way they handled Mac’s death was beautifully tragic and absolutely heart-wrenching. I wish every show would send of characters with as beautiful of a homage as this show did for Mac. Who cares if it takes a who episode or two? I will rave about this show and cry about it until the day I die.

Ten Random Lines Meme
Nicked from @shes-a-voodoo-child
rules: pick any ten of your fics, scroll to the midpoint, pick a line (or three) and share it. then tag ten people.
tagging: not tagging anyone--meme, don't meme, it's all up to you!
Midnight At The Lost And Found (Emergency!, Johnny Gage/Roy DeSoto)
“Yeah, I do.” Johnny paused for another lathering up, then continued in a carefully controlled, matter-of-fact voice. “The second is… man, I don’t know why it’s so hard to say this, but--” Johnny’s voice faltered, but recovered, and he plunged forward. “The second thing is that I love you, Roy, like, really love you, with everything I have. My heart, my soul… and yeah okay, that includes the physical way too. I’ve always liked the men as much as I like the ladies, and I figure we’re compatible in every other way, so it was easy to, uh, extrapolate…” Johnny cleared his throat; Roy could almost see the blush rising in his cheeks, as surely as he felt his own redden.
2. Watching You, Watching Me (House MD, Gregory House/Lisa Cuddy)
"Now remember the last time."
She concentrated, and suddenly she was back to eighteen years ago: back to the days when they were Greg and Lisa instead of House and Cuddy. Back to that sultry June afternoon in House's studio apartment; the day before House was to set off for Baltimore and his fellowship at Johns Hopkins. In the small, cramped room that had no air conditioning, stacks of books piled on the desk, music scores scattered on the floor by his guitar leaning against the wall; back to what turned out to be the last time.
3. Let Be (Torchwood/House MD, Jack Harkness, James Wilson)
"Now that's a nice greatcoat! God, it's gorgeous! Where'd you get it?"
Jack looked down and brushed its wool fondly. "It's an heirloom."
"It's perfect on you. You look like you stepped out of Twelve O'Clock High."
Jack grinned. "Yeah? I know a bit about that era."
James peered at him. "Are you sure you're not Gregory Peck? 'Cause you sorta look like him."
He stared at James' well-manicured hand, sobering slightly as he thought of the Captain reaching for his own. "I'm positive."
4. Home For Christmas (House MD, Gregory House, James Wilson, Blythe House)
"Don't cause a scene, House. Open it," Wilson hissed in House's ear.
"No."
Wilson glanced at Blythe, whose gaze darted everywhere across the room except where her son sat.
"If you won't do it for yourself, at least do it for your mother." He plucked the envelope off House's lap and pushed it against his hand.
5. Downpour (Lie To Me, Cal Lightman/Gillian Foster)
Soon enough the air temperature decides to drop and the breeze picks up. "Finally," Gillian sighs a few minutes later, when the first drops of water patter onto the gravel of the rooftop. She raises her face skyward in relief.
The rain steps up quickly, from sprinkle to steady. The next thing she knows, Cal's stepped up close too, his hand splayed on her waist; his breath is hot in her ear.
"Ever shagged in the rain, Foster?"
6. Stranger Cures (Strike Back, Thomas "Mac" McAllister/Samuel Wyatt)
Wyatt heard a soft, almost resigned exhale from Mac’s bed. Maybe he should just bunk down in the main room the rest of the night. But after a moment, he heard the cot springs squeak as Mac rose, followed by two creaks of wood as he crossed the floor. His mattress dipped on the edge as Mac sat beside him.
Mac laid a warm, broad hand on Wyatt’s shoulder. “Will you trust me?” Mac said.
Wyatt drew in a quick, deep breath against an oncoming spasm and held it in, but it didn’t succeed, and he expelled it in frustration. “I just want this to stop, man,” he said, not bothering to hide his exhaustion now. “I don’t care how anymore.”
7. One Safe Place (X Company, Tom Cummings/Neil Mackay)
“Shove off,” Neil murmurs, not unkindly. Tom mumbles something incoherent and hooks his leg across him too.
“Fantastic,” Neil says, and rolls his eyes, but he doesn't have the heart to push Tom away. That's decided then, he's obviously not moving anytime soon. (And again, being honest, he really doesn't mind.) He settles back down, adjusting just a bit to rest his cheek on Tom's forehead to help keep the heat in (or so he tells himself). Lulled by the warmth in the shared sleeping bag, the rhythm of the rain, and the easy weight of Tom resting against him, Neil's eyelids droop, and he begins to drift.
8. Reunion (24, Jack Bauer/Tony Almeida)
Jack lived on his senses. He trusted his instincts. He knew Tony Almeida more than anyone alive, knew him down to his touch and taste and smell. But the stench of Tony's current anger and bitterness in the FBI office had overwhelmed any hint of him that Jack had filed away. He'd seen Tony frustrated and despondent, but this--
It was obvious that Bill Buchanan trusted this man implicitly, to the point of Deep Sky. But Bill too had been misled before, had placed his trust in the wrong person; hell, they all had. Double, even triple agents weren't unheard of: appearances could be surgically altered, voices re-trained, operatives conditioned. Jack had made enough mistakes today already; he couldn't afford to make another.
He had to know.
9. On The Shoulder Of Orion (Elementary, Joan Watson and Sherlock Holmes)
She looked up from the eyepiece to find Sherlock rocking back and forth on his heels, a pleased expression on his normally dour face. Joan smiled softly at him. “You’ve picked up a lot of incredibly detailed information in a very short time,” she noted.
“I promised Arthur I would assist him with his astronomy project on the evolution of stars,” Sherlock admitted, rather abashed; and he cleared his throat, looking away towards the horizon. “I believe the history of Betelgeuse makes a most excellent illustration of the concept.”
10. A Kinder Fate (Doctor Who 2005, Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Sister-of-Mine)
"Lucy."
Once a year, every year, that had been the arrangement; but after the first year he'd forgotten and hadn't visited her since. He rushed to the mirror that hung across from the entrance to the library. He straightened his bow tie though it didn't need it, and waited.
And soon enough there she was, peeking from a crack in the door, the alien who usurped Lucy Cartwright and wore her face. "Hello, Sister-of-Mine," he greeted.
Lucy hung back by the door, her brow furrowed; gripping her balloon string tight, she shook her head.
"Yes, it's me," the Doctor said. "I've changed my appearance from the last time you saw me, but I'm still the Doctor." Still your jailer, he thought, wincing again.

Interview with Karin Slaughter
After That Night
Will Trent Thriller book 11
Karin Slaughter
William Morrow Pub
August 22nd, 2023
After That Night by Karin Slaughter is typical of her books. She intertwines a fascinating thriller with a very important relevant subject matter, drawing readers into the story from page one.
Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton’s life changed forever when she was violently assaulted and raped. With a strong support system, she became a successful doctor and is now engaged to Detective Will Trent, a man she dearly loves. She has tried to put her past behind her. But one evening changes everything.
She is now working at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital when 19-year-old Dani Cooper is admitted with fatal injuries from a car accident. Sara recognizes signs of rape, which Dani confirms with her dying breaths. Having been raped herself 15 years earlier, Sara vows to bring Dani’s assailant to justice.
Fast forward three years and Sara is now testifying in court against Thomas Michael McAllister IV. He is the son of two of Sara’s former medical school peers, pediatric surgeon Mac McAllister and his wife, Britt. Even more surprisingly, Britt McAllister, when Sara encounters her in the courthouse restroom, smugly informs her, “What happened to you. What happened to Dani. It’s all connected.” Sara decides to tell Will and his partner Faith and works with them to take down the bad guys.
As with all her books the story is riveting and touches on important subjects of the day. Slaughter not only shows readers the effect that rape has on victims but shows how predators get away with it. It is gripping and shocking from the very first page. This book had a nice number of twists, turns and revelations. There are plenty of little quips, bickering, and witty banter sprinkled throughout to ease some of the tension of the story.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for this story?
Karin Slaughter: I write about stuff I have seen going on in the world. It was time to write more about what happened to Sara Linton, a character readers like. Now would be a good time to talk about where she is at. At my heart I am a thriller writer and that has always been my goal, to write thrillers.
EC: Can you talk about why that quote at the beginning of the book?
KS: You are referring to this one, “Remember to speak from the scar, not the wound.” It is from the trauma counseling community. Those sexually assaulted should give themselves some distance. It takes time to process, for a woman to get through it, to recognize and understand it, and to get to a point she can speak about it.
EC: This is like sex trafficking?
KS: Sex trafficking is a good corollary. There was this movie, “Sound of Freedom,” made about it. One of the main investors was just arrested in sex trafficking. People put themselves in the spotlight as advocates for children and women as they speak about family values but are using it to hide their true selves. They have an “alibi” if ever accused because they appear to be such a supportive person. It is the same way for rape where a lot of men hide in plain sight. My point is that a predator is not someone who can be easily spotted.
EC: There is a scene in the book where Sara says she is not sure how she should feel: Outrage, matter of fact, emotional, or devoid of emotion. Please explain.
KS: Sara is talking about how as a victim she also must manage others’ feelings around rape. It is true that this is one of the few crimes where society puts value judgements, especially other women. I think these women are not nasty, but fearful. Every woman has lived with this fear that they could possibly be raped. The fact is rape can happen no matter what a woman does. Women should not be saying ‘she should not have worn that or done this.’
EC: There is a statistic in the story that fewer than 1% of rapes lead to a felony conviction. Please explain.
KS: A lot of police are driven by numbers. They do not prioritize cases. Sometimes they ignore the cases because maybe the victim was a prostitute. Once again, it is a judgement call. Sara feels this weight to suppress her own emotions and help others in the story work their way through what happened to them. Everyone thinks the system works until they are in the system. Rape consistently gets pleaded down to a lesser offense, so men are not put on a sex offender registry.
EC: How did the rape affect Sara?
KS: I openly write about her rape since book 1, Blindsighted, and how it affected her life. Sara feels however people responded to being rape is how they should respond. She managed to rebuild her life including falling in love with a man and to be able to trust him. She did have her family as a support structure.
EC: What about the relationship between Will and Sara?
KS: I have this quote in the book about her relationship with Will, “This is the miracle of her recovery. She trusted with every fiber of her being that he will always be there. He can pick up her moods.” This is one of the strongest parts of Will’s character that he is intensely loyal. He always has Sara’s back and is very supportive.
EC: How would you describe Britt, one of Sara’s medical school peers?
KS: She is a ‘pick me.’ She always is talking about how she does not get along with other women, but the fact is other women do not like her. She will always choose a man over her women friends no matter what. She has no identity outside of a man. She identifies herself only as being the wife of this powerful man. All her self-worth and power come from the fact that she is married to Mac, a top surgeon. She wants to be the cool girl, one of the guys. It is a sad way to live. She is spiteful, insecure, and bitter.
EC: How would you describe Mac, Britt’s husband, who was also a medical school peer of Sara?
KS: He is a control freak. This is not a bad thing considering he is a surgeon. He needs to pay attention to the important details.
EC: How would you define the rapist?
KS: He uses coercion, control, brainwashes, and false imprisons his victims. He uses charm in the beginning, the brain washing part. He does not show all women that part of himself but only the victims are showed this part of his personality. All this work is put into being the thing that they are not.
EC: Are all the rape victims in the story similar?
KS: Sara later talks with Sloan, another medical school peer who was raped. There were different women from different walks of life. They had different ways they chose to deal with it. There is no one way to recover. Sometimes the police have a hand in it also. When a woman files a complaint there are some who say ‘I do not believe you and I will arrest you for filing a false complaint. I am not going to investigate.’ I wanted to show how all these women had different responses and different outcomes.
EC: Next book?
KS: It will be another Sara and Will story. I am working on it now. It will be out next year this time.
EC: What about the TV series on ABC?
KS: I hope people are enjoying it. There will be a second season out when the strike is over. I look forward to the series continuing.
THANK YOU!!

What the hell, Strike Back. It’s the halfway point of S8, and -- for a show that’s basically my Eye Candy & Explosions Hour, I am floored. Long rambling and SPOILERS below cut.
The cast and showrunner weren’t kidding when they promised they’d go all out this season. The writing is genuinely good, after one season of “forced/uneven with flashes of okay”, and one season of “okay with flashes of decent.” Callbacks and parallels and foreshadowing are abundant and on point, and the weight of the last 2.5 seasons is crushing everyone...
Case in point after s8e5: oh, Mac.
Wyatt: Sgt McAllister, what is your greatest weakness?
Mac: You mean, like kryptonite?
You don’t actually answer the question, but you don’t need to because the real answer unfolds soon enough:
Mahir: You only ended up here because you got your team killed.
Mahir played you like a fiddle this whole interrogation. “You failed upwards,” just ouch. As soon as Mahir addressed you by name you should’ve recused yourself. But you took the bait because this is your kryptonite.
We know you weren’t at fault for the Idrissi ambush, Mac, your superiors gave you shit intel and laid the blame on you. Also, we know you survived the ambush only by dumb luck. And you joined Twenty only because Donovan promised you payback. As you told Idrissi, just before you killed him, “I never wanted this. I had my team. My squad. My brothers. You took that from me.”
Then you found another family in Twenty. Wyatt, Novin, Coltrane, and Chetri earned your respect, your loyalty, and your love. You admitted that to Edon Demachi before you killed him (and inadvertently incited the blood feud). But your survivor’s guilt means you will always prioritize the lives of your teammates over the mission. You can’t bear to lose another family. Previously this gamble worked out for you (oh hi, Coltrane vs launch keys), but your luck ran out horribly this time.
Wyatt: Right, greatest weakness, go.
Mac: Oh, mate, not now, please.
Wyatt: It’s you thinking the boss is right. That the mission actually does come first. And if Zayef and Mahir do something, it’s all your fault.
Mac: Which it is.
Wyatt: Each of us would’ve done exactly the same as you.
Coltrane couldn’t go through with the kill order on Zarkova, and Chetri forewarned her of it. OTOH, Novin left Zarkova behind in the missile bunker in s2e10. Wyatt executed his entire Task Force 18 team (including his best friend) to prevent them committing atrocities. Mac, you are a skilled soldier, but officer material? You need to be 100% confident on your assessments, you can’t seek reassurance from others. You didn’t even agree to officer training until Novin and Wyatt gave you their blessing. “I guess I’m in” is not a ringing affirmative. At some level there’s doubt, for whatever reason. And priority one: you gotta start believing in the mission first, and accept all that entails. Not just your mission.
You bet everything on a non-verbal cue, and you were right, but you lost by a millisecond. Instead of dealing with the aftermath, as Chetri and Novin did, you set out alone, without backup, to try to catch Zayef. You prioritized your own guilt and anger over your duty to help victims in the devastation. And so you made the same mistake Spiegel did just one episode prior. He let his feelings take over and paid with his life. (Don’t think I didn’t notice that “Spiegel” literally means “mirror”. Okay, so that’s more like an anvil, but still, full points from me.)
You yourself said of Spiegel, “He was a good kid, in the wrong job.” (s8e4) Will this be your epitaph too? We know the “officer’s curse” in this show, there’ve been a lot of lines suggesting you’re on the clock, and now it’s running out for real.
But maybe you did address Wyatt’s question, in a way. Not your “inspirational” video speech about always finding something worth fighting for--but what you said candidly after that:
Mac: Is that enough? Will that do?
A great setup for episode 6. I don’t know how or if you can come back from your fuck-up. Or if you even want to at this point. I personally hope you pull through because we started the reboot with your story and you should have the chance to redeem your mistake.
But it ain’t looking good at this point, so I’m prepared either way.
(I could write an entire essay just on the episode 6 trailer and its implications. I won’t, except for this: I really, really hope this episode does not unfold in real time. I really need to see this all play out in Mac’s head as he’s bleeding on the floor. Because this is literally the fight of his life.)

Christmas Countdown - Day 7
“I’m sorry we can’t spend the holidays together.”
(gif is mine)
Fandom: Strike Back
Pairing: Thomas “Mac” McAllister x Reader
Word Count: 540
There was always a down side to being on different units, especially around the holiday season. Mac was informed that he was being sent out the Middle East with his team while you were stationed back at base
As he was putting supplies onto the helicopter you watched, wishing the Colonel of his unit would change his mind about sending them out now; though you knew you couldn’t expect that when he was doing what he loved.
“Get the rest of those supplies on the heli.” he ordered his team as he caught you watching out of the corner of his eye. You gave him a little friendly smile and he gave a inaudible demand to one of his fellow sergeants before patting him on the shoulder and jogging towards you.
You smiled at him but lowered your head sadly, knowing you were going to have to say goodbye to each other again. Mac lifted your head back up with his hand.
“Hey,“ he whispered, “I’m sorry we can’t spend the holidays together.” he said as he could see, and you could feel your chin starting to wobble as the realisation began to hit you a little further.
A tear ran down your cheek and you quickly brushed it away, “It’s fine, it’s the job, and I’m not the only the one that will be without their partner on Christmas.” you replied tearfully. Mac hated to see you cry, last year you were away during Christmas, and this year it’s him.
“I just want one year that we can spend together during Christmas.“ Mac wished, grabbing hold your hands lightly, before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to your lips. “I love you.“ he told you softly.
“Come on, Sergeant!” the boys of his unit shouted as he kissed you again.
Mac turned with a grin, “Piss off, I’ll be there in a minute.” he yelled back. Looking back to you you were laughing at him trying to keep his team in control.
“I love you too. Now, go, Sergeant MacAllister.” you smiled. You placed you hand to his cheek, “Please, be safe.”
There was no reply from him, he only gathered you in his arms in a tight, loving hug that you didn’t want to let go from. You took an opportunity to take a deep inhalation of his scent, as you nuzzled your nose into the stubble if his face. The hug had to break off eventually, even though neither of you wanted it too, and he kissed you deeply one last time. “I promise I will get in touch when I can, okay?”
You nodded and Mac wiped another tear from your cheek, “See you when you get back, Tom.” you said and he let go of you completely and began walking back to the helicopter. He jumped on and it immediately lifted from the ground, moving higher into the air and he had left the door open so you could wave to him.
Mac blew a kiss down to you and mouthed, “I love you,” to which you responded the same way before it went off on it’s journey to their base in the Middle East.

Strike Back : New Poster and Episode Synopsis’
Cinemax have released a brand new poster for the upcoming series as well as synopsis’ for the first SIX episodes.
Unfortunately, Jamie doesn’t appear on the poster, but the episode information already gives us just the smallest idea of the sort of Commander he will be.
Season 6, episode 1
Debut date: FRIDAY, JAN. 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Six months after their last mission, three members of the British special-ops team Section 20 - Gracie Novin (Alin Sumarwata), Samuel Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) and Thomas "Mac" McAllister (Warren Brown) - reunite for what they think is a routine "cleanup" exercise in Malaysia. Things get complicated when their new commanding officer, borderline burn-out Alexander Coltrane (Jamie Bamber), learns that a British operative, in possession of intel about a downed Russian plane, has been killed in Kuala Lumpur after meeting with Katrina Zarkova (Yasemin Allen), a covert Russian operative.
The trail leads Wyatt, Mac and Novin to a Russian safehouse, where Katrina and her team of Russian soldiers are attempting to track a mysterious "package" stolen from the plane, which crashed into the ocean under suspicious circumstances. The confrontation turns bloody when members of a brutal Malaysian triad arrive, setting off a chain of dangerous encounters in the skies and skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur.
Written by Jack Lothian; directed by Bill Eagles.
Season 6, episode 2
Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Section 20 forges an uneasy alliance with Zarkova (Yasemin Allen) in hopes of tracking down a stolen nuclear warhead in Kuala Lumpur. The group is frustrated when Police Inspector Amy Leong (Ann Truong), who has connections to triad leader Godfather Kim (Lim Teik Leong) and his henchman Laoshu (Tom Wu), pulls them off the job after a false alarm. High Commander McKitterick (Adrian Edmondson) finds himself in an untenable dilemma, while Novin (Alin Sumarwata) defies Coltrane's (Jamie Bamber) orders to settle a score.

Section 20's search for the missing nuclear warhead leads them to Goa, India, where three scientists have been kidnapped by Gopan (Rudi Dharmalingam), a militant under orders from a mysterious"kingfisher." When one of the scientists escapes, the team catches up to him and his daughter (Pallavi Sharda), gaining valuable intel on Anjali Vartak (Shivani Ghai), a rich Hindu with a personal vendetta against Muslims. S20 infiltrates a suspicious fundraiser as Coltrane (Jamie Bamber) and new S20 computer whiz Olivia Chetri (Varada Sethu) deal with a breach in security.
Written by Jack Lothian; directed by Paul Wilmhurst.
Season 6, episode 4
Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 15 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
As Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) is tortured by Vartak's (Shivani Ghai) henchmen, Mac (Warren Brown) presses her corrupt lawyer to hand over an encrypted hard drive that might hold clues to the whereabouts of a pair of "nuclear suitcases." After being sorely tested in a deadly hostage standoff at an office building, the team is forced to lean on Zarkova (Yasemin Allen) to commandeer high-end Russian technology, crack the encryption code and make a final foray to a secret hideout, where Vartak, Gopan (Rudi Dharmalingam) and the nuclear packages await.
Written by Jack Lothian; directed by Paul Wilmhurst.
Season 6, episode 5
Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Following a high-speed jungle ambush in Myanmar, the suitcase nukes end up in the hands of Jean-Baptiste Zaza (Chris Obi), a brutal Rwandan drug lord with a jealous streak. Even as they continue to suspect Zarkova's motives, Section 20 journeys to the Punchan Province and connects with Lauren Gillespie (Victoria Smurfit), a DEA agent with inside intel on Zaza and Dagon (Fish Chaar), his second in command. With the suitcase on the verge of being sold to a jihadist, Coltrane (Jamie Bamber) tasks Novin (Alin Sumarwata) with impersonating the buyer in order to ascertain the WMD's location. Meanwhile, Colonel Beshnov (Marek Vasut), the Russian Alpha Group leader, surprises Pavel (Alec Newman) with a revelation about Zarkova (Yasemin Allen).
