Decided to challenge myself art-wise a little bit and make an illustration for each of the Davechella playlists while listening to them for the first time! These are mostly based on their individual vibe and I try to finish the drawing by the time the playlist ends, so if they look kinda choppy that’s the reason why. So far it's been a ton of fun and I love discovering new songs and rediscovering the characters through them!! Thank u Dave K and Terror Camp <3 (and like half the cast apparently lol I still can’t believe this is happening)

thinking about the hartnell brothers again. thinking about how their arcs are so subtle it’s easy to completely miss on a first watch, especially if you know nothing about the historical franklin expedition and the beechey island mummies. thinking about how (as far as i can remember anyway) john’s full name is never actually spoken out loud even when he is mentioned (david young’s “please don’t cut me up like you did tom hartnell’s brother”, “men we lost at beechey”, etc). thinking about the deleted scene where tom begs one of the erebus officers in tears not to autopsy john but is of course not listened to. thinking about how tom first seems like he’s going to be one of the mutineers because he’s one of the men who join hickey to kidnap silna — which he probably did because he thought it was logical and necessary, but was probably partially motivated by feeling jaded toward command and their apparent apathy toward the lower ranked men’s suffering. thinking about tom interpreting his lashing as a chance to start anew and going an opposing path from hickey from then on, choosing care for others and trust over hickey’s self-preservation and deceit. thinking about how that care manifests in him protecting and comforting others — offering to carry the body alone when magnus is too scared to go into the dead room, talking to golding after tuunbaq’s terror camp attack, being honest with francis once it’s become clear that covering for armitage is no longer in the interest of the camp’s safety, comforting goodsir in the background immediately after morfin’s suicide, standing frightened but ready to shoot tuunbaq as a last-ditch defense for the men hiding around the boat — like an older brother would. like his older brother might have.

john hartnell isn’t important enough to the narrative to be able to haunt it. but he’s one of the most important people in the entire world to his baby brother, so his ghost hangs around him until the very end. until he is ready. when tom dies it’s like francis is speaking to both of them. you did well son, go be with your brother now

what if we met before the ships even sailed and we connected in a way that tied our fates and got lashed together and had intertwining costume motifs for carnivale all while drifting further and further apart due to the hierarchy present and one of us died saying the other's name...and we were both boys that'd be so crazy haha.
