#ThisMonthInHistory. October 16, 1968 (The Black Power Salute That Rocked the 1968 Olympics) "Gold medalist #TommieSmith (center) and bronze medalist #JohnCarlos (right) raise black-gloved fists during the American national anthem at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Australian sprinter #PeterNorman, who won silver in the 200 meters and supported Carlos and Smith's protest, stands at left. Smith and Carlos (both of whom are National Track and Field Hall of Famers) were vilified at home for their stand. They were suspended from the U.S. team. They received death threats. But neither man ever apologized for his raised fist or his bowed head—and neither ever had need to. “We were just human beings who saw a need to bring attention to the inequality in our country,” Smith said years later, in a documentary on the 1968 Mexico City games produced for HBO. “I don’t like the idea of people looking at it as negative. There was nothing but a raised fist in the air and a bowed head, acknowledging the American flag—not symbolizing a hatred for it.” Source Credit: #TimeMagazine & #NikkiOH

Player Takes Title By Four Strokes - Johannesburg, January 18, 1959.
Gary Player beat out South African master Bobby Locke at the Transvaal Open championship, setting a new course record in the process at Kensington.
“It was during those 16 vital holes in the afternoon that Player revealed his class as a world golfer. During the first nine, particularly, his game looked like going to bits - and, indeed the density of the crowd on two occasions prevented his ball from finding the dense rough-but he held on with magnificent tenacity.”
(Second article - The Star Johannesburg, January 19, 1959.)

This week in history--Gary Player prepared for, and then won, the Australian Open at Kooyonga Golf Club. Now played in November, the Australian Open was played in August, September, and October at varying times over the course of its history. The 1958 Australian Open was played August 28-30. Player’s win in 1958 was his first of a record 7. This year marks the 60th anniversary of that win.

Back in 2008, we would be talking about last night's episode of #TheSimpsons, where #BobaFett freezes 'em in carbonite. This opening sequence aired September 28, 2008. We've looped it a few times so you can really enjoy it. Season 20 Episode 1 (#421) was directed by Lance Kramer and written by Kevin Curran. #StarWars #ThisMonthInHistory #BobaFettFanClub

#ThisMonthInHistory: Marvel Star Wars #42 was published in December 1980. But this first comic book appearance of #BobaFett mirrored the same content in Marvel Comics Super Special #16 (bottom left; dated May 1, 1980), Marvel Illustrated Books: The Empire Strikes Back (top right; dated May 1, 1980), and Marvel Special Edition 2: The Empire Strikes Back (bottom right; dated Spring 1980). To add to the mix, you could include the U.K.'s The Empire Strikes Back Weekly #129 released August 14, 1980. Oddly enough, despite those copyright dates, those variants contained issues #39-44, which makes us wonder which one really came first after all.
