First Tee Galleries in NYC

Are you stressed out by galleries watching you tee off on the first hole? Over the past several seasons, I’ve noticed an uptick in the number of players waiting near the first tees of New York City’s courses. This isn’t anything new, though. Seen above is an illustration from an article in the New York Herald, dated October 22, 1899, showing approximately twelve people watching a player hit their first drive at Van Cortlandt. For comparison, I’ve also included photos of the crowds around the first tees at Silver Lake in Staten Island, Forest Park and Kissena Park in Queens, and Van Cortland in the Bronx (circa 2022). I always try not to worry about the onlookers – chances are everyone is going to struggle with their first shot since there are very few opportunities to warm up at most of the City courses.
