Golf Tips and More Golf Tips
Understanding how to play golf is a challenge for most players. The ‘grip it and rip it’ mentality is king to their approach to lowering their golf score. As we watch the elite players on tour a mindset of trying to hit the ball long creeps into our whole game strategy. I do believe that length offers opportunities for lower scores, but not at the expense of accuracy. There has to be a fine…

Arnold Palmer
Tumblr media
Physique: Average Build Height: 5'10" (1.77 m)
Arnold Daniel Palmer (September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016; aged 87) was an American professional golfer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most charismatic players in the sport's history. Since embarking on a professional career in 1955, he won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and the circuit now known as PGA Tour Champions. Nicknamed "The King", Palmer was one of golf's most popular stars and seen as a trailblazer, the first superstar of the sport's television age, which began in the 1950s.

Handsome and charming. It was Palmer, not Tiger Woods who made golf popular to me. Palmer would stride down a fairway acknowledging his army of fans with a sunny smile and a raised club. And according to Donald Trump, Arnie was was well endowed. I'm betting Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player, other members of the "The Big Three" in golf were also packing 9 irons… at least. Three men that I wouldn’t mind playing around with their clubs and balls.

Born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Palmer attended Wake Forest College on a golf scholarship. After quitting school in 1950, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He returned to Wake Forest in 1954 but left again after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship. He earned his first professional victory at the 1955 Canadian Open. In 1958 he won his first Masters Tournament and placed first on the official earnings list for the PGA Tour. Two years later he emerged as a sports superstar, winning eight tournaments, often in dramatic fashion.

In a career spanning more than six decades, Palmer won 62 PGA Tour titles from 1955 to 1973. He is fifth on the Tour's all-time victory list, trailing only Sam Snead, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Ben Hogan. He won seven major titles in a six-plus-year domination from the 1958 Masters to the 1964 Masters. He also won the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, and in 1974 was one of the 13 original inductees into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Palmer died on September 25, 2016 (shortly after his 87th birthday) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Palmer was twice married, first to Winnie Walzer in 1954. They remained together for decades until her death in 1999. He remarried in 2005, to Kathleen Gawthrop, who survives him. He is also survived by his two daughters from his first marriage, Amy and Peggy. In addition to golf, Palmer was an avid pilot. He flew for over 50 years; in 1999, the airport in his hometown was named Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in his honor.

Let's Read Peanuts (Only 45 more years to go!) – June 1955
There are lots of great strips I just don't have room to comment on. I strongly encourage everybody to read the full month at the official GoComics page. Today's month starts HERE.
June 1, 1955
Tumblr media
OK so for those of you who are younger, Davy Crockett was a folk hero, frontiersman and eventually a US Representative who died at the Alamo. I don’t know much about him and I’m not doing a bunch of research for a single blog post. Sorry (not sorry).
Anyways, he was VERY popular in the mid 50s thanks to a TV miniseries made by Disney and as a result the Davy Crockett coonskin cap was basically the [current toy that kid’s are willing to kill for] of it’s day.
Sam Snead was a golfer.
June 3, 1955
Tumblr media
There are a metric ton of Davy Crockett comics this month.
Also, what the hell is up with that toy gun? Is he shooting down fighter jets later?
Tumblr media
June 13, 1955
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown and Violet seem less antagonistic towards each other this month. Did they make up at some point?
I give it a month.
June 16, 1955
Tumblr media
First comic strip showcasing the Van Pelt family’s ability to communicate with the weather.
Not “control”, mind you. They can’t force the weather to do something it doesn’t want to do. But they can make a request and it will take it under consideration.
June 21, 1955
Tumblr media
Still milking that card tower I see.
June 22, 1955
Tumblr media
LMAO, get wrecked Lucy!
June 29, 1955
Tumblr media
Linus is finally walking (again)! He's people now!

Winter Solstice (2000) by Rosamunde Pilcher -- Spoiler Free Book Review
Tumblr media
My Score Chart:
0 Stars = Hate it/ Regret reading it
1 Star = Meh, not for me
2 Stars = Ok/ neutral
3 Stars = I liked it
4 Stars = I loved it
5 Stars = One of my favorite books ever!
Overall Rating and Basic Summary: 2.5 Stars
I found this novel in the Little Free Library and took it for a spin. From the cover and title, I thought it was going to be a story about witches celebrating Yuletide, however, it ended up being a bittersweet drama taking place during Christmas in Scotland where a group of five people with tragic backstories bunk together. I finished it in three days while I was sick with a cold, but if I hadn't been home sick it probably would have taken me longer since there were a lot of redundant bits of repeating plot and dialogue every time a new character was introduced (which was often!) This book would have been better at about 300 pages total since the inciting incident is nearly 100 pages in and it seems like there is a lot of dead air between plot points.
Even though this had nothing to do with witches, I did appreciate that they explained the difference between Yule and Christmas especially since this is a very Christian-coded book!
Something I did like was that there are a lot of character foils with different emotional and socioeconomic backgrounds. While all of the characters are ethnically Caucasian and from the U.K. and/ or the United States, there was a diverse range of different character ages and marital statuses. Singles, divorcees, widows, widowers, mistresses, and the like were all mixed together in this abode. It was very PG as not much happened between characters other than kissing or "making love" instead of using more graphic terms or smutty scenes.
My favorite characters were Carrie, her niece Lucy, and friend Rory. I couldn't stand Nicola and Gran! However, once I learned Carrie's backstory that did bother me a bit (see my spoiler-filled review for why!) I understand that the author was trying to make her more well-rounded and make her imperfect, but I feel that there were other ways to show her flaws. Lucy and Rory were sweetie-pies, and I have no complaints about either of them. The rest of the characters, including, but not limited to, Elfrida, Oscar, Sam, Major Billicliffe, Arthur, Mrs. Snead, Peter, Tabitha (and more) were ok. I didn't dislike them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hang out with them, either. (Explanation why of the leads -- Sam, Oscar, and Elfrida in the spoiler version). I would put Horace the dog in-between the two groups as he was a bit of a dummy, but I liked him more than most of the human characters.
The end was a bit predictable, but full circle and a mostly "happy" ending. I would have liked it to end after Christmas since there are still some unanswered questions that I guess you can use your judgment to decide what happens. (My imagined endings on the spoiler version.)
Would I read this book again?
No, but it did help pass the time on a weekend at home! I would give one of Pilcher's other books a chance if one sounded interesting. On the bright side, I learned over 100 new words while reading this 500+ page book, most of them U.K. slang or phrases. Since I don't plan on rereading it, I will put it back into the Little Free Library for someone else to read.
Would I recommend it to others?
You may like this if you like Hallmark-y dramas (especially ones with lots of solemn backstory). I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who are depressed around the winter holidays (even though most of the characters are also depressed, this is a story of how they "get over it" since it could send some people into a deeper depression.) Specifically, if you have trauma regarding drunk driving, marital infidelity, or fatal diseases.

Short Game Tips From Sam Snead
Playing shots around the green are inevitable. Regardless of your skill level, knowing the best way to get up and down for various shots is important to achieve lower golf scores. I like looking at older videos of golfing legends, like Sam Snead, to see if the techniques of the past are really any different than those of the present. Surprisingly, the concepts are the same, but the explanations…

Guinness – Surfer
This black-and-white film is pure visual poetry; as the surfers patiently anticipate their next run its not hard to get lost in each impeccably wrought frame from the opening shot of the Surfers anxious mug, to the climax of horses and boarders as a unified wave-riding armada. Add to that the syncopated pacing and carefully executed sound, as well as the Guinness guys pounding spoken word voiceover and the seamless over-the-top effects, and the result is an example of what can come of a great idea, inspired craftsmanship and risk-taking collaboration.
For many Guinness drinkers, “the pour” had long been seen as a treasured part of the experience but it was also seen by non-Guinness drinkers as a barrier to entry. “Good things come to those who wait”.

Spiritual Harrassment
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2 by Os Hillman
12/13/2023
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8-9). I was twenty years old when I approached the first tee of the sectional qualifying round of the Professional Golfers Association US Open, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. I was a college golfer and was teeing it up with the world’s best golfers. I was competing against many of the tour players for only a handful of spots available to get into the tournament. I was called to the tee and teed up my ball when something unusual happened. As I am looking down at my ball I notice the shoes of someone standing no more than two feet from where I am about to tee off. I am thinking to myself with great irritation, "Who in the world is standing this close to me!?" I look up and it is Sam Snead, still one of golf’s greatest players. This man was known for intimidating tactics. But this was beyond belief. Here he was trying to intimidate a young college player. I proceeded to ignore his presence and hit the ball straight down the fairway. In the spiritual realm we deal with spiritual harassment from Satan and his legions. The Bible says "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Eph. 6:12). It is important to recognize when we are coming against these forces. Satan attempts to distract us from our calling and destiny in life. We often trivialize the reality of the spirit realm of evil. Paul tells us we must set our minds to deal with the spiritual realm of evil when it impacts our lives. "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Eph 6:13). The next time you feel obstacles have been placed in your life designed to district you from your God-ordained mission, remember Paul’s words and stand firm in Christ.

Poconos Golf Trip
Tumblr media
Poconos Golf Trip About 90 miles north of Philadelphia and about the same distance west of Metropolitan New York City, you’ll find the ideal recreational area for year-round fun. Snuggled away in Northeastern Pennsylvania is the Poconos, a four-county collection of resorts and places to stay and play. Be it winter sports like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fun slopes to ski; autumn hunting and fishing while you enjoy the colorful transition of fall leaves; summer boating, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming the cool blue and pristine waterways throughout Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne counties; and golf at the 30 odd golf courses and resort clubs almost year-round. Earlier this summer, I took a group of golf writers on a cross-section trip of some of the best Poconos offers. We started at Terry LaGree’s artful design Jack Frost National Golf Club opened in 2007 in Blakeslee and has all the features you would want in a mountain course and none of the shortfalls. Here, you can embrace the Pocono Mountains with all its magnificent vistas and elevation changes. Unlike most mountain courses, Jack Frost National, at 7200 yards from the tips, provides wide fairways, easily identified target areas, few uneven lies, and no blind shots. Before our round, Director of Instruction Ryan Kearn gave us an overview of the course while we enjoyed a light lunch in the new outdoor bar and pavilion. No homes, just flora and fauna. The Jack Frost and Boulder Ski Resorts are nearby. To learn more or book a tee time, please visit www.JackFrostNational.com. We took a backroad ride through small villages and towns to our next destination, Woodloch Resort in Hawley, where we stayed in two lovely five-bedroom homes perfect for a buddies’ golf trip. Each bedroom had its own bathroom, and each house had a great room, dining room and huge kitchen to accommodate all our goodies and drinks. For someone who grew up near the Poconos in Allentown, Woodloch Resort was a complete surprise. thelodgeatwoodloch.com The sprawling resort has three separate facilities, covers 1200 acres and has something for everyone. The Lodge is a ‘Sanctuary for the Senses‘ adults-only spa where guests go to decompress and renew. The Pines is the family resort area where most of the activities are found, and the Springs is the 500-acre home development complete with a Rocky Roquemore championship country club golf course under the direction of Director of Golf John Pillar. The Resort has been owned by the Kiesendahl family for 65 years who insist on treating guests like family. Their attention to detail shows why the Resort is voted the No. 1 Family Resort for the third year in a row by USA Today. After a challenging round at Woodloch with deer following us around the course, we drove east to the “Granddaddy” of the Poconos, The Shawnee Inn. The historic Inn has been the home of an A. W. Tillinghast designed a golf course that plays along the Delaware River and continues onto an island with the river flowing on both sides after crossing a cart bridge. A visit to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is special with the Shawnee Island Course being the crown jewel of the property, where 24 of 27 holes are located on an island in the middle of the Delaware River. The parkland-style course is not the norm in the Poconos, but a nice change from the hills and valleys of the typical Pocono offerings. The historic Shawnee Inn has been entertaining and playing host to the who’s who of celebrities since the beginning of the 20th century. Jackie Gleason learned the game here; Arnold Palmer met Winnie here; Sam Snead spent time as the pro. The likes of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, Perry Como, and many more came to the Shawnee Inn for recreation, fun and cool summer nights. shawneeinn.com The Shawnee continues to change with the times. The property has a craft brewery with outdoor seating and games for the whole family. Tom Doak completed a six-hole par 3 course to complement the championship course where Hale Irwin won his NCAA championship. Recently, the Shawnee owners bought Great Bear Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus masterpiece, in nearby East Stroudsburg to give the Inn a new stay-and-play package. Warm hospitality and cool temperatures are a sure bet, no matter where you decide to go. So, if you are sweltering in the city, take your game and family to the Poconos. You will love it! poconomountains.com/things-to-do/golf Read the full article
