okay so i've been mulling over modern AU tadfools for a while and this is what i got so far
Lae'zel is a skater lesbian (and super autistic lmao), nobody really knows what her whole deal is but they are pretty sure she was raised by some kind of doomsday cult
she's flatmates with Karlach, who is really into MMA and partying it up now that she finally moved out of her old flat where everyone else were just the most fucked up assholes in existence, everyone exclusively calls it "hell" when talking about it
Astarion is the most flamboyant catty twink in existence and currently crashing on their couch because he's been kind of broke since he left his much older toxic boyfriend Cazador (who won't stop bothering him on Grindr)
Shadowheart is the nu goth girl who lives across the hall from them and is really into crystals and witchcraft/paganism, Lae has a crush on her but doesn't know how to deal with it so she's just really mean all the time
Wyll met Karlach when she almost put his lights out in a drunk brawl at a frat party but now they are besties and he constantly hangs around their flat, his father is a politician and he is dating Mizora, who is his dad's lawyer and everybody is telling him to break up with her because she's toxic af but for some reason he just can't bring himself to do it
Gale lives in the same building and never goes outside ever since his ex broke up with him but he met the rest because his cat slipped outside and he had to catch her again and Karlach had picked her up and brought her home because she thought it was so cute
Halsin is an old hippie guy who is the pot dealer of the whole party and constantly tells everyone how great Woodstock was whether they asked or not (they did not)
Jaheira is the teacher of Karlach's MMA group and comes over occasionally because hanging with them "reminds her of her wild twenties" and "makes her feel young again", sometimes she brings her buddy Minsc who is the life of the party
dunno about Minthara she always died in my playthroughs up until now so can't really say much about her
Raphael is their landlord and just insanely weird about everything, everyone is dreading when he shows up except Astarion who thinks "he's got a certain je ne sais quoi to him" (cue everyone throwing pillows at him and booing him for his terrible taste in men)
Gortash is Karlach's ex who got her into "hell" in the first place, he's a lawyer and nobody likes him, there's a dart board with his face taped on it in the bathroom and nobody knows who put it there (it was Lae'zel)
Ketheric is the owner of the law firm he works at and Orin is his other junior partner, she and Gortash are constantly competing about who will inherit the firm despite Ketheric never saying anything about planning to retire, he hates both of them and wishes his daughter Isobel would take over but she quit law school to go to a liberal arts college with her girlfriend whom Ketheric refuses to acknowledge

I found your BG3 fic on AO3, having no knowledge of g/t whatsoever, and found it so cute that I had to come find your tumblr to learn more! And omg the genre is adorable! I’m loving your fic: Ria herself is such a little (tiny!) badass, and the dynamics with the group are so much fun to read! Your style is really descriptive, too, and conveys a lot in the small actions of the characters.
The first chapter had me cackling at the accuracy — Ria is only alive and not-eaten because Astarion likes the sound of his own voice so much that he talked at her until Official Cat Dad Gale could notice and stop him (“What’s in your mouth? No! Spit that out! That’s people! Bad vampire!”). He literally cannot get out of his own way.
I’m so excited for the next chapter! Poor Ria, that her ally in finding Minthara is the smoothest brain in the party. And this will not be easy for Astarion to explain to the rest of the crew that *this one time* he actually wasn’t trying to eat her. So worried for our teeny friend! I guess worst case scenario… at least he’s undead? So, maybe Ria isn’t in *as much* danger, maybe? Would be kind of hilarious if Astarion knows so little about vampirism as to not even know that eating solid “food” (ie people) doesn’t agree with his undead organs.
So looking forward to Ria meeting Minthara! Ria may be small, but she’s still a tough little lass and I can see Minty respecting that.
Oh my goodness anon, you have no idea just how much this comment means to me - this has made my whole day, no, my whole week, and if I could frame a comment I would frame this one and hang it on my wall. It means even more since you had no idea what g/t was prior to reading my fic, and that is honestly so special to me that you took the time to read it (and liked it!!) and leave such a thoughtful comment. All I can say is welcome to the g/t community! It makes me so happy that you found the community through my fic and I hope you enjoy it! I have been laughing so hard at your description of Astarion finding Ria in chapter 1 and Gale being a cat-dad, like, I actually don't have the words because it's so goddamn accurate and hilarious all at the same time!! As for the latest chapter, I promise that Ria will not be taking a trip down Astarion's throat, so you needn't have to worry about that. Although if he were to swallow, it would be very bad for Ria as I believe in game Astarion can consume solid food, it just doesn't hold a lot of nutritional value for him. However, in my fic, vampires do in fact consume borrowers quite actively for their blood, so it would be a grim end for Ria if he were to actually eat her. ;w; Fortunately for her though, he has developed a small soft spot for her now so she'll be okay <3
Ria's encounter with Minthara is not going to go well. ^^; I don't want to spoil too much, but seeing as how Minthy was involved with trading borrowers for their blood in my fic, she thinks very lowly of them which you'll see in the next chapter when I get around to writing it. Anyhow, thank you so much for your comment. I actually can't stop smiling since I read it and it's probably the best feedback I've ever received for a fic, so thank you anon. <3
#i was wondering if the non g/t fans would find my fic and i am pleasantly surprised!!!#this was not the response i was expecting but it makes me so incredibly happy#thank you so much anon!!#ask

Through Heavy Rain and Winter Storms - A Sloose fic
Nick’s home alone when someone unexpected shows up on his doorstep unannounced.
~~~
For a prompt list, prompt was "A joins B in the rain"
Words: 1363
A typical winter storm blew gales outside. Rain slammed against the windows so hard he thought they might break. Nick was wrapped in a thick blanket, he was home alone and had been given strict instructions not to put the heating on.
Then the doorbell rang. It must be the pizza he'd ordered, but it was awfully fast, he only ordered it ten minutes ago. There was meatloaf in the fridge but Nick worked hard enough tutoring to buy himself a pizza on a Friday night.
He clung onto the blanket like a cape and shuffled to the door. When he pulled the door open, he expected to see a pizza delivery guy soaked to the bone. Instead, there stood Ron Kerner.
"Ron!" He exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"
He looked like a wet cat as he turned to him. Through his shirt, Nick could see his forming muscles, and his nipples. He gulped. They'd kissed a few times behind the locker rooms after their athletics team practice, but hadn't really had many serious conversations beyond snarky comments and teasing remarks.
"Erm, I don't really know, I didn't know where else to go,"
"Are you going to come in?"
Ron just stared at him through the pouring rain. For the first time since this whole thing began, he actually looked vulnerable. It was a strange burden to bear because Nick got the strange feeling that he didn’t allow himself to be vulnerable all that often.
He was frozen on the stairs. Nick shrugged off the blanket and joined him in the rain. Taking his hands, they were as cold as ice, he felt the rain pelting on his back. They walked inside and under the amber lighting he could see his eyes were red, so were his knuckles.
"Go and sit in the living room, I'll get you a drink," he moved toward the kitchen, then remembered the discarded blanket on the floor. "Here, take this, you must be freezing."
"'M fine," he said, taking the blanket anyway.
Nick then busied himself making cocoa. His mum had told him he was a bit of a mother goose, always trying to take care of people. He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.
A few moments later, he came back to the living room. He placed the mugs on the coffee table and went to sit next to Ron, but soon hurried to get another blanket.
They sat for a moment in silence. Nick sipped his cocoa as he listened out for the pizza. As he did so, he watched a droplet of rain roll over Ron's forehead and down his face. He was beginning to shiver, and just as he was going to mollycoddle him, Ron sipped his cocoa.
"So, what's this about then?" Nick tried.
Ron didn't say anything for a while. Nick could see the wheels turning in his head.
Then, "It's about my dad."
Despite not knowing much about Ron's dad, even he knew that this wasn't good. Ron never talked about his dad, so now that he was, well, Nick could guess as to why his eyes were red.
"Is that why-" he started.
"My knuckles are bruised, yeah,"
"I was thinking more about your eyes," he said, then asked. "Wait, your knuckles?"
"I punched him."
Nick almost spat out his cocoa, "You punched your dad?"
"Yeah!" He cried. "If you saw the guy who hit your pregnant mom so hard she went into labour early then you'd be angry too!"
"Wait, what, your mom's pregnant?"
Ron rolled his eyes and placed his cocoa down. He tucked the blanket under his arms to free his hands.
"No, look I'll go back to the start."
He shuffled to face him fully. Nick pulled his blanket tighter and focused. Ron never talked about his personal life.
"My dad was never around, he got my mom pregnant young and ran when he she told him, then he showed his face when I was five and gave some shit about getting some money together."
"I didn't buy it but he managed to get my mom around his finger just enough to weasel his way in and get my mom pregnant again. And again, and then again."
He trailed off at the last line. Nick didn't say anything. This was all so new he didn't really know what to do.
"He walked out when my mom got pregnant for the last time, then came back, my mom told him she was pregnant and they began to fight," his voice wavered. "I was trying to protect my sisters, they didn't really know my dad, but I did, I do."
He closed his eyes. He was still shaking but Nick guessed not from the cold.
"He said she was just trying to keep him around, manipulating him by getting pregnant, well, he wasn't having it," he tensed his hands on the blanket. "He started getting physical and-and-he pushed her, he pushed my eight month pregnant mom over and stormed out."
Nick couldn’t even imagine what that would've been like. He heard his parents fight enough, but to have something like that happen to his mum. He shuddered, he’d probably punch him too.
"That's awful," he said.
"Yeah, it really was. She went into labour, my sister was premature and ended up with some, erm, problems," he added. "You probably know she uses crutches, she has seizures too."
Nick went to say something but Ron didn't stop.
"And then my dad comes back, after ten years, and just weasels his way in again like he never left and nothing happened, he gets in my mom's head, and my sisters too because if she trusts him why not them, right? Well not me." He huffed and focused on his hands, then shrugged. "So I clocked him."
Nick snorted, "Clocked him? God you sound like a gangster or something!"
Ron caught on and started to laugh. Creases formed around his eyes. He sounded so easy laughing, it was like he needed to, like he hadn’t in years. Nick loved to make people laugh, that was another thing his mum called him, a clown, he knew he liked that name.
Then the moment ended. Ron played with the edges of the blanket and hid his gaze from him. From the sound of his breathing, he was on the verge of crying.
"Hey, what's up?" Nick shook his hand.
"It's just-" he sniffed. "I feel like no one's on my side, ever, my dad just keeps getting in and my mom keeps letting him and makes me feel stupid for not wanting that horrible deadbeat around us."
"You've got me."
Ron's head darted up. Tears joined the sheen of rain covering his cheeks, he glimmered under the low light of the room. By the look of his reaction, it was like no one had ever told him that.
Nick held onto his hand with both of his. All they’d done was make out. That's all he thought they would do, and, sure, in this town maybe that's all they’d get- especially with a future in the Navy. But none of that meant he couldn’t be here for him now, as a friend or otherwise, he liked the other option more.
"Thanks, Nicky, thanks,"
Ron lifted his hand and kissed it. Red flushed his face, he knew he’d be bright red. Was it wrong that he'd never felt this way about anyone before? Even other girls?
But, just as they were settling into the moment, the doorbell rang.
"Oh shit, your mom's not back, is she?"
Nick chuckled at his cute shocked face, "No, it’s the pizza I ordered before you got here."
"Oh, I should go, I kind of intruded,"
He went to get up but Nick pushed him back onto the chair.
"Don't be stupid, stay here tonight," he said then turned back to him as he walked to the door. "Hope you like Hawaiian!"
"Pineapple on pizza, Jesus Christ Nicky, what are you, a heathen or something?"
Nick just laughed and trotted to get the pizza. Behind his walls, Ron was pretty good to know.
I already kinda had this idea beforehand so just made it rain and had Goose join him to bring him inside. Don't know if this really counts as joining him in the rain but oh well, I like this fic.
Also, yes, I do hc that they knew each other in high school, and made out. Oh young love.
Thanks for reading!
more Dark Urge oc thoughts. I have two of them: Veren and Ilryn : )
Veren is very much the favourite child of the two because he's the 'redeemed' run (after FFXIV I need a good ending fix okay) whereas Ilryn is the 'I'm a special little Bhaal boy so I'm gonna deliver a dead world to dear old dad because I'm Soooo special teehee' run but
what they have in common is that they are viciously defensive of their loved ones - Veren adores the entire crew, and while his favourite is Astarion as his lover, Ilryn's favourite is Gale and basically only Gale.
Veren has the entire crew you can get ingame minus Minthara for 'good run' reasons, whereas Ilryn does not have Halsin, Jaheira and won't have Minsc either. He has Minthara, though.
Ilryn didn't side with the goblin camp - he in fact does not side with either party and simply leaves because his priority is himself (and later Gale). He is not being evil at this point, it's simply about survival and he doesn't care about a bunch of random Tieflings making it to Baldur's Gate. They probably won't get there anyway if several Mind Flayers are born nextdoor, too.
Veren on the other hand has a golden retriever personality sometimes and also figures that if his brain is hissing and spitting like a vicious baby kitten at the idea of Helping People then he is in fact doing a Good Thing and Should Do It (also if Astarion whines - he likes Astarion but he's an ass) so he stays to help to the best of his ability. Surely he should be helping because he's Strong and they aren't, right? That's what the Strong should do! (this also pisses Astarion off therefore it must be Correct)
Both of them also want what's best for their respective lovers, but Ilryn's idea of 'best' is making Gale into a God. In his mind, this is the only way he can keep Gale to himself without upsetting Bhaal. If Gale ascends to Godhood, Bhaal can't touch him, and he can deliver what was promised once. Gale is strong, smart, and he was once an Archmage and fellow Chosen - he's the *perfect* partner to Ilryn.
Obviously this is tricky so I have to iron out details but like Ilryn wants to be selfish for this one thing so badly just as Dark Urge was with Gortash in some ways; minus Ilryn actually giving a shit about Gortash. He actually was not romantically involved with the man at all but respected him to a degree - but was totally just playing along with the plan to use him.
Veren was totally head over heels for the guy and was Very Close to chucking it all away to protect Gortash but obviously it never happens because of Orin and the lobotomy.
Ilryn is very pro like, using people to further goals whereas Veren is apprehensive for the most part unless they Really Need To Die. Like he is in no way ever going to take pity on Some people and Will indulge his Urges from time to time - Ilryn however will almost always try to shove them down because he is killing for Himself and Himself only unless it furthers the plan for Bhaal.
Bhaal can wait for the glorious dead world; he'll deliver them all when it's time, and he wants and needs total control of himself for that to happen, it's too delicate a task. Veren cries when he kills Quill. :) (Fun fact I actually failed the rolls not to Urge Astarion my first run and let that play out and while I adore that stupid knife cat smile the fucker does after the camp wakes up, it wasn't planned for at all so I reloaded lmao.)
Veren also desperately longs for his old memories even though he knows it will disgust him, and has talked at length with Astarion that even though he rejects who he used to be, he still feels very empty knowing that there's a whole life locked away to him that he'll never be able to retrieve. For obvious reasons, Astarion can sympathize - and part of that sympathy extended to Veren befriending Gortash again. (Well, trying to. I am staring directly at Larian for spoiler related reasons that was COWARDLY!!!)
Ilryn completely rejects it because it's not relevant anymore. He has a problem ahead of him Now and that's more important, and so is Gale's problem. (Oh also he totally intends to let Astarion ascend even after learning the cost because SHRUGS, one more powerful ally for him! Neat.)
Basically what I'm getting at here is Ilryn is Bhaal's favourite but Veren is my favourite DAGNJKSGDF
I just am glad I made two of them because Ilryn was originally going to just be an evil run for Veren but he kind of evolved into his own shitty little character, oops.
More thoughts another day I need to write fic
100daysofwriting - Day 1
So I thought for the first day I might just briefly outline all of the WIPs I have actually made a start on and that might help me to decide where I want to focus some energy. I have some for Katniss/Peeta in THG fandom and some for Natasha/Clint in the MCU.
Everlark
folklore series - so I started this series of fics inspired by songs from Taylor Swift's album folklore because honestly those songs just immediately bring to mind so many scenarios that made me think of Katniss and Peeta. I made a start on chapters based on peace, my tears ricochet, invisible string, this is me trying, and mad woman. I also have a bit of an outline for continuing the story that was started in 'the 1'.
I've had this one WIP ongoing since about 2015(?) which is a bit of a monster that has grown beyond me but basically it involves Katniss and Gale being raised in the Capitol in relative poverty after their fathers are conscripted into the peacekeepers because of traitorous activity. Mrs Everdeen is still from 12 but was moved to the Captiol to be married (this part is sketchy) and she still had a little childhood romance with Mr Mellark. Peeta gets reaped and Mrs Everdeen reacts to this as he looks like his father. Katniss gets a crush on him as she watches him prepare for the games. She hates herself for it but finds herself checking up on how he is doing even during non-mandatory viewing.
Arranged Marriage - I feel like this is such a cliche for thg fandom, but I just imagined my own way that the pairings happen but I'm so bad at writing slow burn so this will probably never materialise, but if you want a semi-decent thought out pairing/arranged marriage system I would be happy to lend you mine.
Miscarriage fic - I will never post this, but it's in my WIP folder. It's full of nasty feelings that feel a little better when they are written about.
Modern AU Pandemic Quarantine! - ofc, this is essential. Katniss and Peeta end up as the only people not to move home from their dorm for the quarantine. Slow burn that I can't fucking write should ensue.
Canon Pandemic Quarantine AU - pandemic a few years after the end of the war forces Katniss to admit she wants Peeta as more than a friend with whom she hunts, bakes, rebuilds the district. Cue sexy pandemic times and a resentful Haymitch that keeps accidentally breaking the rules.
Divorced but co-parenting Everlark - obviously finding their way back together
Another classic of their children being reaped and dying - I don't know why I write things this depressing. They just tend to come out in one big rush and then I never address them again.
Real weird teen pregnancy modern day AU - don't know where it's going or why...
Modern day AU dead Prim - Peeta and Katniss just met each other through mutual friends and are kind of flirting. Peeta is a bit infatuated. Katniss stops going to mutual friend parties and he finds out it's because her sister died. Instead of staying away he gets tangled up in her grief and does all sorts of practical things while Katniss wallows. Also it's E rated but not that much fun... can't entirely explain where this one came from either...
Single Parent AU where Finnick and Annie play match maker. Probably my fave Everlark in the works but it's another one that has grown so big for the 20 minutes I can dedicate to it each week.
Clintasha
Red Room Take Down - Nat and Clint are retired and living a quiet family life with their child. SHIELD appears asking for Nat's help in taking down the red room and dealing with the fall out, specifically what to do with the girls that they get out. Nat is torn but chooses to go. Chaos ensues with the 'rescued' girls. I need to actually develop some OCs a little if I ever want this to be good but tbh the pending Black Widow movie is kind of holding me back on this one too because I hope we find out more about the red room.
So I have a weird habit of writing from Lila Barton's POV. I can't explain it. I have AoU and like to pretend it never happened but anyway I have a WIP about Lila detailing the collapse of her parents' marriage after Clint retires and he and Laura actually have to spend time together without Natasha. She then goes on to describe the custody settlement and her utter joy that Auntie Nat sleepovers with them at her dad's place. She feels utterly betrayed when she finds out they are getting engaged.
Fluffy AU - Clint and Natasha in an established relationship with a son born between infinity war and endgame. Natasha still sacrifices on Vormir, but Steve gets her back no bother and it's so nice and happy and fluffy and Clint and Natasha are together and they have a son who has both parents back and Steve gets to make all this happen and he is so happy too and they have a barbecue and go swimming in a lake and clint/natasha have private time, and their kid wants to be captain america, and did I mention how HAPPY everyone is?
Another fic similar to the above just about everyone being so HAPPY. Endgame reverses the snap and instead of weird farm family coming back Clint and Natasha get their daughter back and it's just a cute moment about her reappearance and their race back to the spot she disintegrated from. (Steve/Bucky go to Vormir and Steve is sacrificed, but that fucker CHOSE to leave).
This is another one that has just grown bigger than my brain. it's based off the idea that Natasha helped with coordinating fosterings during the blip time. Clint loses his mind when he loses his family and crashes in BedStuy but finds a neighbour girl (Kate Bishop) who is fending for herself in post-apocalyptic Brooklyn. He helps her out and tries to get children's services involved but it has collapsed. Finds out Natasha is the one getting everything in order. He gets in touch. She's at the end of her tether and asks why he can't keep looking after her. In the end he does and she ends up getting involved and all three get overly attached to each other. I haven't got as far as the events of endgame and idk what's going to happen. It might be tragic.
Pregnant Natasha but nobody knows what is wrong with her because they don't even suspect her being pregnant is possible. Just a real vivid description of the early unpleasant pregnancy symptoms.
Another absolute monster - Sort of canon compliant to begin with aside from before the farm family disappear. Clint and Laura are in the middle of separating and tensions are running quite high at the farm. Snap happens. Nat and Clint accidentally run into each other while both a bit low during the blip and get drunk and share home truths. Begin working together from HQ and both get a little less sad. He convinces her she doesn't have to be responsible for the world's fate every moment of every day. Clint has a break down at Morgan's 1st birthday and realises that things will have to change. Nat has this realisation later. They begin sleeping together. Accidental pregnancy. More feelings come out between them. They enter a more conventional relationship and have baby. Baby is really hard work (colic) and they struggle with comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. Pepper helps them to identify the colic and improves everything greatly. Happy times with baby while also running the avengers. Opportunity to reverse snap. Some good scenes between Nat and Tony. A big conversation between Nat and Clint about what it will mean. Steve and Nat end up going to Vormir together. Nat is obviously about to commit suicide. Steve over powers her and gives her a pep talk about the situation she is running away from and how to deal with it. He self-sacrifices. Clint goes back to farm fam and Natasha goes back to BedStuy with baby. Clint has to tell Laura and then the kids about the last 5 years and their new siblings. Nate is super into it. Cooper is a bit aloof and cynical. Lila is confused. Laura is quietly seething. Clint helps put the farm back together about 5 years of neglect and the kids meet baby. Family gets happier. Laura and Nat eventually meet again and it's civil/friendly.
My own version of what happened in Budapest.
The Call - inspired by a post here on tumblr. Nat calls Clint as she bleeds out. Just needs a beta reader and then I would consider publishing.
AoU reimagined but with Clintasha - I'm not sure where this one is going it's like a massive spider web right now with lots of ideas shooting off, but basically it is inspired by this post and just involves a lot of hoodwinking the other avengers.
Accidental Baby Acquisition - Natasha becomes Yelena's child's legal guardian after Yelena gets taken out. Natasha and Yelena are estranged at this point and Natasha things the whole thing is a trap and brings Clint along. He is surprisingly good with the baby so she ropes him in to teach her. The three of them end up bonding.
5 times there's only 1 bed + 1 time they choose to sleep in the same bed.
non-superhero AU Clint and Nat both think they have adopted a stay cat but actually the cat has owners and just likes strokes and eats a lot so has many 'families'. They get into an argument over which of them the cat belongs to only to find out the cat has owners and they are moving away. They decide to adopt a cat between them as both are not hope that much and the shelter refused them as single people. Slow burn ensues, which I am shit at writing.
New Beginnings
Peeta Mellark is excited. There’s only 1 week left before school starts up again, but he’s excited nonetheless. He has the week off, and his best friend is finally home from her job at summer camp.
Summer without Prim had been completely boring. He had to work all summer in the family bakery because his older brother made the Panem University Football team, so Rye got to run around at practice everyday instead of working in the bakery like usual.
Peeta had to do all the heavy lifting, working 40 hours a week or more. Sure, the money was great - he bought a car! - but he was always dead tired by the weekend. And with his best friend away, Peeta had been bored.
But now, Prim and her sister Katniss are home. Peeta can’t wait to see them. He and Prim are juniors this year and Katniss is a senior. Peeta has had a crush on Katniss since his first day of school. When his dad introduced him to the daughters of his old school friend on his first day at Kindergarten. It was a day he would never forget.
He and Prim were in the same kindergarten class and became instant best friends. Katniss, a first grader, on the other hand, intrigued him, especially how she took care of Prim. She was a year older, so she knew the ropes. She held Prim’s hand and explained what was going on so neither Prim nor he was nervous.
Peeta’s own brothers never did that for him. When he and his brothers got to the schoolyard, his older brothers took off to go play with their friends until school started. Katniss, however, stuck around.
That first day, when the bell rang, all the kids were ushered into the auditorium. Peeta was so excited; he’d never seen so many kids gathered at one time. The school Principal, Effie Trinket held a welcome rally at the beginning of every new school year. Katniss directed Prim and Peeta to sit near the front so they could see better. Peeta quickly got bored of the Principal’s speech about rules and etiquette, but when Miss Trinket called Katniss up to the stage, that got his attention.
“My dear children, you are in for a treat,” Miss Trinket announced. “Your very own Katniss Everdeen is going to sing a song to start out our new year.”
Katniss stepped up to the microphone and in the voice of an angel started to sing a song called New Beginnings. Katniss voice soared to great heights. Prim giggled next to him, but Peeta didn’t pay any attention. He stared in awe throughout the entire song. When she was done, Peeta stood up and gave her an enthusiastic standing ovation. Katniss looked over at Peeta and smiled, and Peeta was a goner.
That was 12 years ago, and Peeta still holds that crush close to his heart. Not only was Katniss his best friend’s sister, but she probably thought of him as a little brother.
Now, Peeta is on his way to visit the sisters for the first time all summer. He knocks at the door, bouncing on his feet, excited to see his best friend.
The door opens, and Peeta’s eyes go wide and his voice catches in his throat, because standing before him in a tiny green bikini is no other than Katniss Everdeen, the love of his life.
Not that she knows that, but she’s staring at him like he’s some kind of dummy, Peeta thinks, but he can’t seem to get any words out. He’s so distracted by her long flowing hair that she flips back over her shoulder.
Katniss gives him a small shy smile. It's so brief Peeta thinks he imagined the look on her face. Her smiles are rare.
“Is he here?” Prim asks from behind Katniss and it seems to break the staring contest.
Katniss steps back and tells Prim, “You just might have to shoo the girls away at school when they see your boyfriend.”
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Prim says as she passes Katniss, who’s rushing off to the back into the house.
“Come on in,” Prim tells him, then whistles as he steps inside. “Wow, you really put on some muscle over the summer. Working in the bakery really did your body good,” she says while squeezing his bicep, and pinching him on the side.
Peeta pushes her away. “Whatever, but you sure got taller. You’re taller than Katniss now.”
“I know,” Prim giggles. “She hates it.”
Katniss comes back out wearing a cover-up over her bikini, but Peeta can still see her long tanned legs. She’s such a goddess, he can’t keep his eyes off of her. “I’m outta here. Have fun guys,” Katniss says and rushes off.
“Stare much,” Prim teases, and punches Peeta in the stomach.
Katniss quickly looks back, but scurries off before Prim sees she was returning his stare. Her phone rings as she walks away.
“Peeta,” Prim chides, “You know the rules. No dating each other’s siblings.”
That rule came about because in the 6th grade, their fellow students, Cashmere and Glimmer got in a fight because Glimmer started dating Cashmere’s twin brother. They didn’t talk for weeks. So Prim and Peeta made a rule that they couldn’t date each other’s siblings. Peeta agreed even though he had a huge crush on Katniss. He knew he never had a chance with her. She was a year older, beautiful, and all the boys liked her.
That call is probably from her boyfriend Gale Hawthorne anyway, Peeta thinks, and tries to put Katniss in her tiny green bikini out of his mind. Peeta and Prim spend the rest of the day swimming in the backyard pool, telling each other about their summer.
By the time Katniss comes back, the sun is dipping into the horizon and Peeta swears that shade of orange is now his favorite color. It casts her golden skin in a hue that makes her look like a goddess. Peeta dives under the water to calm himself down.
For the rest of the night neither notice Katniss keeps peeking outside. When Peeta goes to leave, it’s his car that draws Katniss out again.
Prim whistles, “This old junk needs to be scrapped, not driven.”
“Hey, no!” Peeta leans in and whispers, “Don’t listen to her, cheese-bun, she knows nothing about cars.”
Katniss grins, then says, ”Nice ‘66 Shelby Cobra Mustang, needs a lot of work, but it looks like it has good bones.”
Peeta stares openly at Katniss.
“Don’t be too impressed, Gale’s dad is a gearhead. He teaches Katniss whenever she goes over there,” Prim says dryly.
Peeta nods. Figures, her boyfriend probably drives a fully restored muscle car and takes her out every night. Peeta clears his throat, “I, uh, I bought it off of the goat man. You know that guy who runs the goat farm at the edge of town. He came into the bakery and was talking about getting rid of the car his son left in the barn before going off to war all those years ago. I went out to see it with my dad, and I couldn’t believe what he had. It was in terrible shape, as you can see, but I really have hopes for restoring her to her old glory.”
“Besides Prim, you shouldn’t be too harsh, this is the car that’s going to take us to school for the rest of the year,” Katniss says firmly.
“Sure,” Peeta squeaks out. He clears his throat and in a manlier voice he repeats, “Sure, yeah, I’ll be driving you ladies to school everyday.”
“Great, we’re gonna get laughed at on our first day back,” Prim whines, but Katniss tells her to shush.
Peeta gets in his car and starts it, but before he can put it into gear, it backfires. Prim shakes her head and grumbles while Katniss laughs and waves to Peeta as he pulls out of the driveway.
Peeta comes over everyday for the rest of the week, but Katniss is never around.
On the first day back to school, Peeta picks up Prim and Katniss. Katniss doesn’t say much. She has her earbuds in, listening to music. She gives him a quick nod and jumps in the back seat, so Prim can sit up front.
When they get to school, someone wolf whistles.
Cato Ludwig comes up and puts his arm around Katniss’ shoulder. “Now that Hawthorne is away, Kitty cat can play.”
Katniss ducks under his arm and pushes him away. Her legendary scowl in place. “Get lost, Cato.”
“Oh, not in a playful mood, are we?” he asks, then turns to Prim.
“How about you, little sister, you’re not so little anymore, are you?” and wiggles his eyebrows.
He goes to put his arm around Prim, but Peeta jumps in and twists Cato’s arm around his back.
Cato makes a counter move, but Peeta is ready and pins him to the ground. He may have been smaller than his brothers, but he’s had to wrestle his older brothers his whole life.
“Get off me,” Cato growls, not liking being shown up by a younger kid in front of the rest of the school.
Before Peeta can let him up, Coach Abernathy comes out of the building and blows his whistle.
Peeta jumps up and holds his hand out to Cato, who pushes it away before getting up himself.
“Cato and Peeta, enough of that.”
All the kids around make oohing sounds.
Cato whines. “I wasn’t fighting. Mellark jumped me.”
“Looked more like he was protecting his friends,” Coach replies. “From you.” He turns to Peeta, “You should think about joining the wrestling team with moves like that, but any more fighting and it’s detention for the both of you.” He emphasizes his point by pointing two fingers at both of the boys, then storms off back into the school.
“Thank you Peeta,” Prim tells him. She gives Cato a scowl and drags Peeta into the school by the arm. Katniss follows at a short distance behind them.
Peeta looks back at Katniss, and she nods, and mouths, “Thanks.”
“Mr. Mellark,” Coach Abernathy calls from his office.
Peeta hangs his head. Great, he thinks, I bet I’m getting that detention after all.
“I need to speak to you.” Coach Abernathy walks away.
Peeta tells Prim goodbye and follows Coach into his office. Once there Coach Abernathy shows him a chair.
“Kid you need an elective, that cooking class has been cancelled.”
Peeta sits up. “What?”
“Not enough people signed up and it got cancelled.” Coach Abernathy looks at his computer screen. “Let’s see, in that time slot, your choices are Auto Shop, and Public Speaking. Oh, wait a minute. You’ve already taken public speaking, so Auto Shop it is.”
“Great,” Peeta says as he gets up. I need Auto Shop to work on my car anyway, he thinks.
“Oh, and Mr. Mellark,” Coach Abernathy says before Peeta can leave the room, “You really should consider trying out for wrestling. You already got the moves.”
“I’ll think about it, sir,” Peeta says as he leaves the office.
Peeta just sits down in first period literature class. The teacher isn’t in the room, so most of the kids are still milling around. Cashmere, Glimmer, and Clove surround Peeta’s desk.
“Wow Peeta, you sure grew up this summer,” Cashmere tells him.
“Ya,” Clove says, then snaps her gum, “you got muscles, like your brothers.”
“You really took on Cato for Primrose Everdeen. He’s a senior. Is she your girlfriend?” Glimmer asks while twirling her hair.
“What? No, Prim is my best friend.”
“Oh, are you dating Katniss Everdeen, then?” Cashmere asks, then points at Katniss who just walked in the door.
Peeta makes a choking sound and stares over at Katniss who sits down on the other side of the room.
The girls all look over too, and Katniss quickly looks away.
“I see,” Cashmere says, and pulls the other two girls away, whispering and pointing between Peeta and Katniss.
“Katniss has a boyfriend,” Peeta finally says, although he doubts they hear him over their whispering. Katniss is going to hate being the subject of rumors, Peeta thinks.
Later that day, Peeta has lunch with Prim.
“People keep asking me about you, how you got so built, why you took on Cato.”
“Please, I don’t want to talk about that. Tell me about your day. Anything good happen?” Peeta asks.
Prim obliges by telling him about the new girl she met, named Rue. “She’s a new transfer from District 11 and reminds me of Katniss so much. She just loves the outdoors, and she sings all the time.”
“Sounds like you found yourself a new best friend,” Peeta teases.
“What? No!” Prim blushes. “You’ll always be my best friend. I just, I don’t know. I like her.” Prim looks down at her lap.
“Hey, no worries,” Peeta tells her, lifting up her chin. “I was just kidding. Go ahead and spend time with Rue. I’m happy that you made a new friend.”
“Thanks,” Prim says shyly.
The end-of-lunch bell rings and each heads off to their next class, Biology for Prim, and Auto Shop for Peeta.
Peeta walks down the long hallway to Auto Shop. He’d never been in this wing of the school before. His father had told him, back in his day, all the boys had to take Woodworking Shop and Auto Shop, while the girls took Home Ec, but nowadays, all those classes are electives.
Peeta steps into the classroom and finds several auto bays on one side of the room, and a long table with chairs lining the other side of the room. Several people are already sitting at the table, but he doesn’t know anyone yet.
“Hey Mellark,” a voice he was dreading to hear, calls behind him, “what are you doing slumming in Auto Shop?” Cato Ludwig asks him.
Before he can answer, the voice he loves to hear calls out, “Why, worried he’ll pin you again?”
The other kids chuckle as Cato’s face sours. “No one asked you, Everdeen,” he grouses.
Katniss Everdeen, this class just got that much better.
“Hey Katniss,” Peeta says shyly, rubbing his hand across the back of his neck.
“Hey, what are you doing here? I thought you were taking Cooking class this period.”
That’s odd she knew that, Peeta thinks. Prim must have told her.
“Uh, it got cancelled. This was the only class open. But I’m glad it was. Now I can learn how to work on my car.”
“Oh yeah. You need to ask Ms. Mason if we can use your car in class, but we’ll need to find another way to school. I don’t want to take the bus.”
“I can do that?” Peeta asks.
“Only if your car is worth my time,” A voice answers behind him.
Peeta turns around to find himself face to face with a woman in her mid twenties, with black spiky hair tipped in red, wearing a red tank top and coveralls folded down at the waist.
“Whatchagot kid?” she asks him.
Before he can answer, Katniss jumps in, “He’s got a ‘66 Shelby Cobra Mustang. Been in a barn for decades, but it could really be something if we can get to work on it.”
Ms. Mason nods. “Sounds good, and you guys can call me Johanna. I’m the teacher now, no longer the assistant, so what I say goes, got it?”
“Got it.” Everyone answers in unison.
“Okay, Lovebirds, you take bay one.”
“We’re not a couple, and the name’s Peeta, Peeta Mellark. Nice to meet you Johanna.”
“Kissing up doesn’t work in this class. And I don’t care if you and Brainless are together or not. Just do your work, Loverboy and you’ll do fine.”
Johanna moves onto the other bay assignments.
“Don’t mind her,” Katniss tells him, a light blush on her cheeks. “She gives everyone a nickname.”
“Yeah? How’d you get Brainless?”
“I forgot to put the oil pan plug back in last semester. Oil all over the floor. What a mess.” Katniss tells him with a grin. “It’s better than Meathead, or Marvelous.”
“Is that why they call him Marvel?”
Katniss nods with a smile. Katniss is something else in Auto Shop class, Peeta thinks. She really comes out of her shell, and Peeta likes seeing this side of her.
Peeta learns quickly that he knows nothing about cars, but the prospect of working on his own car with Katniss Everdeen is something to look forward to.
After school, Peeta drives Katniss and Prim home. Prim tells them about her new friend Rue, and how they are in almost every class together. She even wants to be a doctor just like Prim. With news of Peeta’s car being used in shop class, they find that Rue can drive them back and forth to school.
Katniss still sits in the back, but with Peeta now. They talk about everything they can do to the car. Peeta has never seen Katniss talk so much at one time.
Time flies, and the car is taking shape. Prim starts hanging out with Rue after school while Peeta and Katniss work on his car.
Peeta starts cutting his lunch short to go to Auto Shop class early. One day he is trying to configure the carburetor. He has to figure out how to connect the throttle link.
“Hey Mellark,” Katniss calls. “Why are you here so early? Shouldn’t you be at lunch with Prim?”
“I have to finish this up before class. I can’t mess up my test.”
“Let me help you with that,” Katniss says as she leans over.
“Thanks.”
“So quick, what do you call that,” Katniss says pointing to the round thing sitting on top of the engine.”
This is going to be painful. Peeta cannot focus on the car with Katniss so close. He’s staring at the graceful slope of her neck. Who knew a neck could be alluring. He begins to sweat.
“Earth to Peeta,” Katniss snapped her fingers in front of his face.
Peeta understands the meaning of becoming cross eyed. Momentarily his vision blurs and his heart rate spikes. He blurts out the first thing that comes to his brain. “An air filter?”
“No it’s the air cleaner.”
“Right.” Peeta feels like an idiot. How in the world is he supposed to study when he turns into a buffoon in her presence. Peeta takes a deep breath to clear his mind. “I feel like I’m never going to get this right.”
“Don’t, these old cars aren’t easy. But they are fun to work on. And trust me, there’s nothing like the sound of a finely tuned engine purring.” She gives him one of her rare rosy cheeked smiles.
Peeta has no idea what Katniss was talking about but he nodded. “Okay.”
“Now next question, what does a carburetor do?”
“It mixes air and fuel to make internal combustion.” Taking out a handkerchief he wipes his face and mutters under his breath, “I think.”
“Good.” Katniss reached out and put her hand on his forearm. “Name the different types of carburetors.”
Peeta thinks he’s going to combust. Nervously he wipes his brow again. He’s losing his concentration at Katniss' light touch. “Custom choke, vacuum, and multiple ven...vent-venturi,” he blurts out.
“Good. Now which one of those is in your car?” She squeezed his arm. Peeta is holding onto his sanity by a thin thread.
“It has a choke one,” he gasped. “I know because I was able to find the number…”
“You don’t have to say another thing, Johanna won’t really care. She just wants to make sure you know what you’re doing.” Katniss removes her hand from his arm, flicking her signature braid over her shoulder.
“Really.”
“Yeah, if you’re going to drive this around you want to make sure you know what to do if your engine dies, or lose control. It's important.”
Katniss stares at Peeta for a moment, then her face becomes pink before she blurts out, “You know, you smell like a cookie.”
Peeta wants the ground to open up and swallow him whole. Why can’t he smell manly, he’s got the smell like the bakery. “I’m sorry I smell.”
“You smell nice.” She takes a step toward him.
He stands straighter, unsure of what to do next. “Thank you?”
She’s so close he can see the flecks of yellow around her pupils when he looks down into her eyes. Peeta bends his head and Katniss lifts hers. She licks her lips and he mirrors her movements as their faces move close together.
The bell rings and the door to the shop bangs open. Peeta jumps back and Katniss steps away, suddenly interested in the car’s front tires. The other students start shuffling into the classroom.
When Johanna comes in and starts the class, everything is back to normal with Katniss. It’s like that moment never happened.
Half way through the year, Peeta and Katniss stay after class to work on his car once again. Peeta closes the hood and stands back, looking over his car. Katniss stands next to him wiping her hands.
“The car is close to being done.”
“So what color are you going to paint her?”
Peeta thinks it over. “Well, my favorite color is sunset orange, but that’s not an original color. What’s your favorite color?”
“Green,” Katniss says shyly.
“Really? Peeta says excitedly as he pulls up the color chart for 1966 Mustangs. “We can paint it Ivy Green. That’s an original color.” He leans over and shows her his phone.
“You’d do that?” she asks as she looks at his phone.
“Of course, You’ve put in as much work on this car as I have.”
Katniss looks up into Peeta’s eyes and smiles. “I’d like that.”
Peeta reaches out and brushes a loose hair behind her ear. “Besides, I would have been lost without you. I want to paint it your favorite color.”
“Okay,” Katniss whispers as she looks up into his eyes.
“Okay,” Peeta answers as he leans down, meeting her lips.
Katniss’ breath fans across his cheek. He pecks her lips experimentally.
Katniss places her hands on his chest and leans up on her tiptoes to capture his top lip. Peeta hands find purchase on her hips and flex gently at the sensation of her lips moving against his. Peeta’s heart soars as she deepens the kiss. It’s everything he’s dreamed this kiss would be. He cups her chin and she moans.
Katniss pulls away. Their eyes meet and once more their lips meet over and over again until they are both breathless. Peeta pulls away. “We shouldn’t be doing this?”
Katniss frowns. “You’re right, Katniss says, as she steps back. “Prim would hate me.”
“What about your boyfriend, Gale?” Peeta asks, confused.
“What are you talking about? I’m not dating Gale. I was talking about Prim. I know you two are dating. You’ve been best friends forever. She’d be stupid to not want to date you.”
“Uh, Katniss, if you haven’t noticed. Prim has been spending all of her time with Rue.”
“Really I thought it was because she was driving us to and from school.”
“Katniss, you’re the one I’ve been spending all my time with. I like you. I’ve had a crush on you since the moment I met you. This past year, working with you has been a dream come true.”
Katniss looks up at him and smiles. “Really?”
“Really,” Peeta answers her with another kiss. “So when you said Prim would be stupid to not want to date me, does that mean you would want to date me?”
Katniss looks down and whispers, “Maybe.”
Peeta lifts her chin back up and says, “I think I’ll just have to convince you.” And moves in to kiss her once more.
Neither of them hear the footsteps coming down the hall. “I think they are still in here,” Prim says. “The lights are still on.”
Prim and Rue walk in and find Katniss and Peeta in their passionate embrace.
“Finally,” Prim says.
“What about your,” Rue makes air quotes with her hands, “You shouldn’t date a brother or sister rule.”
“Rue I only did that because Katniss wasn’t ready to date. My sister’s so awkward about boys. I wanted to make sure she didn’t break Peeta’s heart. Besides, they’ve been dancing around each other all year. I think they’ll be a while. Let’s get out of here.”
Rue giggles.
“Shh....” Prim nods to the door.
Prim and Rue walk out hand in hand.
Back in the room, Katniss and Peeta each pull back and take a deep breath. Katniss looks around and asks, “Did you hear something?”
“Not a thing,” Peeta says, “but we are going to have to tell Prim about us. We had this rule…” Peeta drifts off, “but I think she will understand. They are probably waiting for us. Let’s go.”
Katniss and Peeta walk out, but Peeta says, “Hold on a second, and runs back, gives his car one last look and smiles at the thought of it bringing Katniss to him, and he turns out the light.”
This fic was inspired by both The Kissing Booth and Grease. I hope you enjoyed it.
The Dragon’s Family
Masterlist
Relationships: Nalu
Warnings: A couple of suggestive jokes when Loke is present but other than that the bulk of this fic is just pure fluff.
Summary: It’s Christmas Eve at the Dragneel house and Natsu finds out that he and Lucy’s kids have the wrong idea about the kind of dragon Igneel was from a book they found on dragons. They think he was a killer just like the other dragons 400 years ago, and Natsu can’t say anything to convince them otherwise. Thankfully, Lucy remembers a spell that Wendy told her about that could bring Igneel back to life for just one night.
A/N: Hey guys, Merry Christmas Eve! I got this idea after watching How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming and I thought it would be cool to see how Igneel would react to Natsu and Lucy’s family. So give this fic a read if you like and I hope you all have a great Holiday!
---------
In a small cottage in the woods on the outskirts of Magnolia, a mother, two children, and a flying cat were putting the final decorations up around their house for Christmas.
"Whoa I can see the whole living room from up here!" A little boy exclaims.
The mother who was on a ladder halfway up against the Christmas tree heard her son and looked up and saw the flying cat holding him in the rafters to wrap garland around them.
"Happy please be careful not to drop Igneel!" The mother pleads.
"Don't worry Luce, this little guy's not heavy like you are!" Happy replies.
"It's not his weight I'm concerned about." Lucy growls through gritted teeth while a vein pops out of her forehead.
"He squirms around a lot, especially in that sweater so make sure you've got a good grip on-"
"AH!" Igneel shouts as he slides out of his sweater and falls towards the floor.
"Igneel!" Lucy shouts.
"Don't worry mommy I've got him!" The daughter says and runs towards her falling little brother.
Just as she's about to reach him she trips on the garland that was still on the floor and is about to hit it with her brother when they're suddenly both caught by someone who appeared out of nowhere, as if by magic.
"Never fear my dear, for your knight in shining armor is here!" The hero says.
"Loke!" Lucy exclaims in relief while holding her hand over her chest.
"Thank goodness! It's times like these when I'm glad you can open your gate on your own. And even happier that you'll come help the kids too when Natsu or I can't get to them." Lucy says.
"Well why wouldn't I? They're your children so I care just as much for them as I do for you." Loke explains as he sets Igneel down and ruffles his spiky blonde hair.
"You're so cool Uncle Loke!" Igneel exclaims with stars in his eyes.
"Why thank you young man. That is an image I try to keep up." Loke says while pushing up his glasses.
"Thanks for keeping me from falling on my face." The girl says.
"Why of course Miss Nashi. You may have inherited your father's wild pink locks but you were also gifted with your mother's beautiful face." He says and holds her chin gently.
"To see any damage come to a face as lovely as your mother's would be an absolute tragedy! Especially since I imagine she looked just as adorable as you are now when she was your age!" Loke exclaims and tickles Nashi's stomach.
"And even though many years have passed, your mother still looks just as radiant as when I first met her." Loke says and comes to stand beside the ladder Lucy was on and winks at her.
"Very smooth Loke." Lucy chuckles.
"That's not the only thing about me that's smooth Lucy." Loke adds.
Lucy's face turned bright red when she saw Loke open up his button down shirt to expose his chest to her.
"Feel free to touch anywhere you'd like to see just how smooth I am." Loke requests.
"I thought dad didn't like it when Loke flirts with mom?" Igneel asks his big sister.
"He doesn't. That's why Uncle Loke only does it when dad isn't home." Nashi explains to him.
"Loke keep your shirt on when the kids are here! It's bad enough that they're already exposed to Gray's stripping habit, I don't want them to have two men in their life that are constantly flashing them!" Lucy complains.
"Of course, I must have been so distracted by your beauty that I've forgotten my manners. Allow me to conduct myself in a more gentlemanly manner by holding the ladder to keep you safe and steady." Loke says while holding the ladder.
"This wouldn't have to do with the fact that I'm also wearing a skirt right now would it?" Lucy asks.
Loke merely chuckles and blushes.
"Well, either way it doesn't matter. I should go put a fire in the fireplace since it gets really cold in this house without Natsu." Lucy says and starts to come down the ladder.
Then Loke suddenly appeared at her side, delicately holding her hand.
"While we're waiting for his return I could think of a few ways to keep you warm." He says suggestively.
"Just what do you think you're doing with my wife Loke?" Natsu asks.
Loke's smoldering look turned to one of fear as he froze when he heard Natsu's voice from the front door behind him as it shut.
"Daddy!" Nashi and Igneel exclaim as they run towards Natsu.
He scoops his kids up in a big hug and smiles at them both before frowning at Loke who was still holding Lucy's hand.
Loke immediately let go of it before smiling sheepishly at Natsu.
"Oh well if it isn't the man of the house!" Loke chuckles nervously.
"Your wife mentioned that you were out on a job. I didn't expect you back so soon."
"It was a short job. I wouldn't take one any longer on Christmas Eve." Natsu explains.
He sets the kids down and walks over to Lucy.
"And if anyone's gonna be keeping Lucy warm it's me." Natsu says and holds her waist and lifts her off the ladder.
"Oh Natsu..." Lucy says softly and holds Natsu's shoulders before kissing him.
Natsu melts into the kiss and adjusts his hold on her to wrap his arms around her waist to keep her steady.
“Well you may be here now to keep her warm but while you were gone I was the first one to taste your wife’s delicious cookies.” Loke brags.
Natsu turned away from Lucy to frown at Loke.
“You did what now?” He growled.
“Natsu he’s talking about the Christmas cookies I baked today.” Lucy says.
“This one looks like Santa!” Nashi says, holding up a cookie.
“And this one looks like a Christmas tree!” Igneel says while holding another.
“Oh.” Natsu says and relaxes.
“But if you’re offering then I would love to sample those-“
“Get lost Loke!” Natsu scolds before Lucy closes his gate.
“Does he always show up and say stuff like that to ya when I’m not around?” Natsu asks his wife.
“Not enough to warrant another talk like the one we gave him before our wedding. Although because of you it was more of a threatening lecture than a conversation between mature adults.” Lucy reminds him.
“I’m sorry about that Luce. I just don’t like it when other guys say stuff to you like that. I’ve never been good at saying romantic stuff to ya, so when other guys do that it makes me feel like I’m failing ya in some way.” Natsu admits.
“Natsu, Loke might be great at sweet talk but you’re a sweet guy. You show me how much you love me through your actions, and that speaks so much louder to me than words ever could.” Lucy says and cups his cheek.
Natsu nuzzled his face against her palm and smiled.
“That’s ironic coming from an author.” He says.
Lucy laughed and then Natsu scooped her up again and spun her around while pecking her lips over and over. He stopped and set her down when he felt a tug on his pants. He looked down and saw his son looking up at him with curiosity.
“Daddy what job did you take that was so important you left us on Christmas Eve?” He asks.
“Well it was a job that only I could do. That huge blizzard yesterday froze Hargeon’s port and all of the ships were stuck. So I had to go un-freeze the port by melting the ice with my fire.” Natsu explains.
“Whoa, you melted an entire bay with your magic?” Nashi asks in amazement while resting her weight on her hands that were pressing on her brother’s head.
“I sure did! One Fire Dragon King roar and then those ships were all sailing!” Natsu exclaims.
“And how many of those ships ended up catching on fire too?” Lucy asks sternly.
Natsu scratches the back of his head as a bead of sweat drips down his forehead.
“You’ll find out when Gramps yells at me about the bill he’s gonna get.” Natsu says.
Lucy rolls her eyes then smiles at him. Then she shivered and rubbed her arms as a chilling gale blew by the house.
“The winds pushing away the blizzard from yesterday have been freezing!” Happy exclaims before his teeth chatter as he holds himself.
“Yeah it’s been really cold here without you dad.” Igneel says while hugging himself.
“Hey! Daddy’s not the only one who can make fire! I can help warm you up Iggy!” Nashi says.
“Oh yeah, Nashi uses starfire magic. Why didn’t we just use her magic to warm up in here?” Happy asks.
Nashi holds her hands out in front of her brother and then sparkling flames come shooting up from her palms and one of them catches on the sleeve of Igneel’s sweater making him scream and flail his arm before Natsu sucked up the fire.
“Because she’s only allowed to use it when Natsu’s here so the house doesn’t burn down.” Lucy reminds him.
Nashi pouted and Natsu pulled her into a hug.
“Don’t be down kiddo, you’ll get better at controlling it with practice, that’s how I learned. Besides, if you pout then Santa won’t give you any presents.” He reminds her and she immediately stopped pouting and gave Natsu her biggest smile.
She squeals in delight as Natsu stands up and holds her over his head by holding her waist with his hands before laying her down over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes while she laughed.
“How about you help me make a fire in the fireplace to warm up your mom, Igneel and Happy?” Natsu suggests.
“That sounds fun!” Nashi cheers.
------------
“Oh this feels so much better!” Happy purrs as he curls up on Igneel’s lap by the fireplace.
“Great job Natsu.” Lucy says and lays her head against Natsu’s shoulder as they sat close together.
“Anything to make you happy Lucy.” He says before kissing the top of her head.
“Hey dad, who taught you fire magic?” Igneel asks.
“I’ve told ya before. Your grandpa Igneel. The dragon you’re named after.” Natsu says and ruffles his hair.
“Wait grandpa Igneel was a dragon!?” Nashi exclaims.
“Yeah he was. Natsu didn’t you tell them that?” Lucy asks.
“I thought so but maybe I forgot to mention that part?” Natsu wonders.
“Wait so grandpa Igneel was really a killer dragon?” Igneel asks.
“Whoa hey, that’s my dad you’re talkin’ about he was no killer. He was a good dragon and he taught me how to read and write and use magic.” Natsu explains.
“Yeah but he also killed a bunch of other dragons and people didn’t he? That’s how he became the Dragon King?” Nashi asks.
“Where’d you here that crap?” Natsu asks her.
“She may have tagged along with me and Levy to the library when she was doing research on dragons earlier this month…” Lucy admits.
“Someone wrote a book about Igneel?” Natsu asks.
“Not about him specifically but notable dragons like him.” Lucy explains.
“Like that one dragon Zirconis that Levy said made mommy naked!” Nashi says.
“Of course that’s the part she remembers.” Lucy grumbles.
“And then it tried to eat her!” Nashi exclaims.
“Daddy how were you able to avoid getting naked and eaten by Igneel?” Igneel asks.
“I was never naked, I had pants! And I never had to avoid being eaten because Igneel never wanted to eat me in the first place!” Natsu answers.
“But he was a dragon, and according to all of those books Levy found, dragons eat people!” Nashi says.
“Well not all of them, or else myself, your uncle Gajeel, aunt Wendy, and Sting and Rogue wouldn’t be here right now.” Natsu says.
“How do you know they weren’t just fattening you up to eat you later?” Igneel asks.
“Because Igneel would never do that, he cared about me! He even had your great-grandma Anna make me this scarf for me out of his scales.” Natsu explains and pulls his scarf looser to show his kids the scales.
“Wait those are dragon scales? Dad really was raised by a dragon Nashi!” Igneel exclaims.
“Oh no what if he comes and eats us?” Nashi asks and hugs her brother in fear.
“He’s not gonna come and eat ya.” Natsu says sternly.
“Even if he wanted to he couldn’t. He died years before you two were born, protecting your mom and the rest of the guild from Acnologia.” Natsu says and stares at the fire.
Lucy reached forward and held his hand to comfort him and Natsu squeezed it in response.
“Mom does that mean you met Igneel?” Nashi asks.
“Well I saw him fighting but I never got the chance to talk to him before Acnologia struck him down.” Lucy says.
“I wish I could’ve introduced you to him Luce. He would’ve loved you.” Natsu says and smiles at her.
“He probably would have just confused me with Anna.” Lucy guesses.
“Did he want to eat Anna too?” Nashi asks.
“What no never! He was friends with Anna, she used to be a teacher for me, Sting, Rogue, Wendy and Gajeel.” Natsu explains.
“Igneel was a good dragon, he’d never eat anyone. I don’t know why you kids are on about that.” Natsu says.
“Because that’s what the books say daddy, and mommy and aunt Levy say that books are always right!” Nashi says.
“Oh so it’s you and Levy’s fault that our kids think Igneel was a killer?” Natsu asks Lucy.
“Hey don’t blame me I didn’t write the books!” Lucy retorts.
“Come on Iggy let’s go up to mommy’s writing room, I’ll read you the books!” Nashi says.
“Okay!” Igneel agrees and follows his big sister up the stairs.
Lucy smiles as the two of them ran up the stairs to her study before turning back to her husband who seemed sad.
“Natsu don’t be so worried. They’re kids, they’ll believe anything they read or hear is the truth.” Lucy explains.
“Then why won’t they believe me when I tell them the truth about Igneel?” Natsu asks.
“I don’t know.” Lucy says.
“I don’t want my kids growing up thinking that Igneel was some sort of terrifying monster when he wasn’t.” Natsu says.
“I’m sure they won’t. They’ll believe you one day.” Lucy says.
“How do you know that? It’s not like they can meet Igneel to see for themselves.” Natsu says and sighs.
Lucy got a thoughtful look on her face and rubbed one of the scales on Natsu’s scarf.
“But it’s not like I can bring him back to life, as awesome as it would be for him to spend Christmas with us.” Natsu says.
“So let’s just enjoy the Holiday as a family.” Natsu says and kisses the top of her head.
“Yeah, a night together as a family is always a good way to spend the Holiday.” Lucy says as she discreetly plucks a scale from the scarf and pockets it for later.
-----------
Later that night while the kids were fast asleep, Lucy came into their room and gently whispered to them to wake them up.
“Mommy why are you waking us up?” Nashi asks with a small yawn.
“Is it Christmas morning already?” Igneel asks and rubs his eye.
“Not yet. But I want you guys to come outside with me and aunt Wendy. We have a surprise for you and your father.” Lucy says.
After rallying her kids and her husband to get them to come outside they came to find Wendy and Carla outside of a huge fire in their yard.
“What are the two of you doing here?” Natsu asks, rubbing his eye.
“We’re here to use a special spell that Wendy knows how to do, to bring someone here for the Holiday’s.” Carla says.
“Who are you trying to bring home?” Nashi asks.
“You’ll see Nashi.” Lucy says.
Natsu gives her a curious look then watches as Wendy throws something small and white into the fire and then kneels in the snow with her hands pressed together and a magic circle begins to glow underneath her.
Suddenly, the flames shoot high into the sky and they hear a dragon’s roar.
“What was that?” Igneel asks timidly and shuffles closer to his sister.
A giant, red scaly arm comes out of the flames and smacks down in the snow. Natsu’s eyes widened.
“No way is that…” He stammers.
The rest of the beast emerges from the flames and lets out a loud roar.
“Igneel…” Natsu whispers as tears form in his eyes.
The kids and Happy scream and both of them run to hide behind Lucy.
“Mommy aunt Wendy summoned the killer dragon!” Nashi wails.
“Tell daddy to kill it before it eats us all!” Igneel screams.
“He’s not going to eat us.” Lucy tells her kids.
“I asked Wendy to use a special spell that uses just one of his dragon scales to bring him back for one night so that you kids can meet him and see that he’s not the monster you read about in those books.” Lucy explains and waves Wendy off as she leaves with Carla.
Natsu noticed the hole in his scarf and smiled before coming over to his wife, wrapping his arms around her waist and planting a passionate kiss on her lips.
“Thank you Lucy. This is the best Christmas gift I’ve ever gotten.” Natsu says before kissing her deeply again.
“Well are you going to spend some time with your old man or are you just going to kiss your mate all night?” Igneel the dragon chuckles.
“If I had it my way I’d do both.” Natsu says before going over to Igneel.
“Dad be careful!” Nashi calls to him.
“Relax Nashi, he’s not going to eat your father.” Lucy reassures her.
“So you took my advice and looked forward to the future.” Igneel says looking from Natsu to his family.
“I did dad, this is my family.” Natsu says and gestures to them.
“I know son. I’ve been watching over you, and seeing you grow stronger and find love made me so happy.” Igneel says.
“And now they can all finally meet you!” Natsu exclaims happily.
“Kids come on over and meet your grandpa!”
Natsu holds out his arms to his kids who were still hiding behind Lucy. She coaxes them out and gently nudges them forward towards Natsu and Igneel. They timidly walked forward to stand in front of the dragon and Igneel tilted his head and looked at them curiously.
“Dad, these are my kids, Nashi and Igneel. Kids this is your grandpa Igneel.” Natsu introduces.
Igneel exhaled a hot breath onto their faces and both of the kids gasped then giggled.
“That tickled my nose!” Nashi says then sneezes and a small fireball came out of her mouth.
“Your daughter takes after you I see.” Igneel chuckles. “That takes me back to when you use to sneeze up fireballs.” He reminds Natsu.
“Yeah, those were the days.” Natsu says.
“I take it you two have never seen a dragon before?” Igneel asks the kids and they shake their heads no.
“Well now what do you think of your grandfather?” He asks them.
“I still think you’re kinda scary-looking, but you’re also a lot nicer than I thought you were!” Nashi says and gently reaches out to rub his nose.
Igneel chuckled and gently bit the back of Nashi’s coat and lifted her up into the air. He tossed her and she laughed as she went flying into the air while Lucy watched with worry.
“Be careful!” Lucy warns before Igneel catches her again and sets her down on the ground.
“Do me next grandpa!” Her son requests.
Igneel heeds his request and does the same to his grandson.
“You have the same laugh as your father.” Igneel notices.
“You even look at lot like him too. The only difference is that your hair is a different color. I’m assuming he gets that from you.” Igneel says and looks at Lucy.
She and Happy walked forward towards Igneel and Natsu wrapped an arm around her waist while Happy hung onto his shoulder.
“Igneel, this is my wife Lucy and my best pal Happy. Lucy, Happy, this is my dad Igneel.” Natsu introduces.
“Hello Igneel, it’s nice to meet you.” Lucy says.
“Aye Sir!” Happy says.
“Hello talking blue cat, I always found you very strange.” Igneel says and Happy looks offended.
“And Lucy, you resemble your ancestor Anna very much. No wonder Natsu ended up falling for you. He did like Anna a lot when she was his teacher.” Igneel laughs.
“First Gajeel now you, what the hell does that mean?” Natsu asks.
Igneel sighs and looks at Lucy.
“How he somehow managed to realize his love for you is something short of a miracle.” Igneel says and Lucy laughs while Natsu looks offended.
“But when my spirit resided inside of Natsu I felt his feelings for you change as I watched your relationship grow. I knew that if any woman was ever going to have his heart that it would be you, and it looks like I was right.” Igneel says.
“So you like her dad?” Natsu asks.
"I think she's great Natsu. She’s beautiful, smart, and at this point she probably knows you better than you know yourself." Igneel says and grins.
“I love her more than anything dad. I don’t know what I ever did to deserve her, and I don’t think I could ever live without her.” Natsu says and kisses the top of her head.
“If Igneel’s gonna be here for the whole night, does that mean we’re gonna stay up all night to celebrate Christmas with him?” Happy asks.
“You bet we are!” Natsu says.
“Yay!” The kids cheer.
“What should we do first?” Lucy asks.
“Well, the skies seem pretty clear tonight…” Igneel says and looks up in the sky before looking at his grandkids.
“Do you kids want to know what it’s like to ride a dragon?” He asks and their faces light up in excitement.
------------
“Everyone hang on!” Igneel calls to them as he swoops up into the sky over the forest.
Natsu, and his son hung onto Igneel’s back while Lucy and Nashi wrapped their arms around Natsu’s waist and held on tight. Happy hung onto Natsu’s shoulder for dear life until Igneel straightened out and he could relax.
Nashi and Igneel looked amazed by the view of the sky.
Natsu looked over his shoulder to see Lucy’s reaction but she still had her face buried in his scarf while clinging to him for dear life.
“Relax Luce, and look at the stars.” Natsu tells her.
He lifts her chin up and she gasps as she sees all of the stars sparkling all around them.
“It’s so beautiful from up here.” She says.
“Whoa Nashi look you can touch a cloud!” Igneel says and reaches out with his hand to touch a faint cloud wisp.
“Why don’t you try to catch that one up there Iggy?” Natsu suggests and tosses his son up into the air before catching him again.
Together they flew across Hargeon bay and then mountains. And then they flew across Magnolia, creating quite a stir for the residents that were still awake, thinking that this dragon sighting must be some sort of Christmas miracle, which it was.
Back at home they played games until the kids were tired, and then Lucy and Happy put them to bed so that Natsu could have some time alone with his dad before the sun rose.
When Natsu came back after Igneel was gone there were tears streaming down his cheeks. Lucy hugged him and he buried his face in her neck and held her waist.
“What did he say to you before the spell wore off?” Lucy asks.
“He said that he’s so happy that he could spend a night with his family. He loves you, Happy and the kids Lucy, and he’s gonna watch over us for the rest of our lives because seeing us together is what heaven is for him. Being able to spend Christmas Eve with us as a family made him the happiest he’s ever been and it made me so happy too that he could be with us again even if it was just for one night. I always wanted him to meet you all, and being able to have him do that was the best way to spend Christmas, thank you so much for getting Wendy to bring him back so he could meet the family I was able to have because of him.” Natsu sniffles.
“Merry Christmas Natsu. I love you.” Lucy says softly while she teared up.
“Merry Christmas Luce, I love you too.” He says before planting a wet kiss on his wife’s lips.
“So,” Logan began.
“So,” Roman responded, reclining in an ornate ruby chair.
“Sew buttons!” Patton interrupted, draping himself across Roman’s lap.
Virgil growled in frustration. “Can you please focus for a single second?”
The heroes had relocated to the supers’ gym, still anxious to keep the untested villains away from the mayor.
“We don’t take orders, Reflex,” the Marauder replied evenly. “We’re only here because you two don’t seem as incompetent as the rest of the super assholes.”
“You don’t need to take orders,” Logan said, shooting Virgil a reassuring look even as he spoke. “We just need to know what exactly you can do, and plan how we’ll stay in contact.”
“Asking for my number already? I couldn’t possibly, not so soon,” Roman responded, fluttering his eyelashes.
“We’re not joining your ‘hatchet’ or whatever you call it,” Patton added. “We’re here to take down a murderer, not get sucked into the system.”
“We’re not asking you to join H.A.T.C.H.,” Logan said patiently. “But if we don’t know where you are or how to contact you, that just makes you a liability.”
“Actually it’s just an air ability,” Patton quipped back. His lips didn’t twitch. He didn’t grin. But the smugness was palpable from across the gym. Logan lost his train of thought at the overwhelmingly familiar feeling of a punster at work. He could practically see his dad’s irritatingly-pleased grin shining through Patton’s smooth mask.
Virgil, a true hero, came to Logan’s rescue. “So, air ability. Air manipulation, no matter where the air is, yeah? Inside or outside of a person?”
Gale Force paused, then nodded.
“And you, Shiny Red Boy, any limitations we need to know about?”
The Crimson Marauder gasped. “Shiny red boy? That’s the best you can do? I am appalled, I am disgusted, I spend my life dedicated to being chaotic neutral and this is the thanks I get??”
Virgil rolled his eyes. “Okay, Drama Red Queen, shall I paint the roses for you or are you going to answer the question?”
“Joke’s on you, I like that nickname,” Roman said with a sniff. “I just need to keep focused. And my constructs can only be autonomous if they’re tiny. And I can’t do more overall mass at once than something about the size of this entire room.”
Logan looked around the echoing room, designed for whole teams of heroes to practice in at once. “That’s some power,” he said softly. “And limited only by strength of mind. Fascinating.”
“And what about you two?” Patton asked in a saccharine-sweet voice. “You wouldn’t get us to divulge details without returning the favor, would you?”
“I have, as you’ve seen, a super speed ability. I can also speed read or manipulate just a hand or limb to go at enhanced speeds. I can go from 0 to 60 in .0001 seconds, and my top recorded speed is 1,700 miles per hour, or approximately 2,700 kilometers per hour.” Logan responded matter-of-factly.
“And what about you, Tall, Dark, and Muscly?” Roman asked.
“I picked my super name as Reflex for a reason. I’ve got fight, flight, and freeze. Super strength, superflight that can rival the Doc here for speed, and the shockwave you both saw the other day. I send out a burst of energy that stuns or knocks out anyone in a given radius.”
“Can you control who it affects?” Patton asked curiously. “Or is it just anyone?”
Virgil’s mouth twisted. “I can sometimes control it, yes. If I’m focused, and I’m not too upset at the time. It’s not guaranteed.”
“How upset were you the other day then?”
“You’d just attacked my partner. I was pissed, but in control. If you’d more seriously injured L- the Doctor, you might have needed more than one day to wake up from the coma I put you both in.”
“Partners are important,” Patton said softly, running a hand through Roman’s dark, wavy hair. He turned and made eye contact with the heroes. “If you hurt him, I will end you.” It wasn’t a threat, but a statement of fact.
Virgil locked eyes with the villain, jerking his head at Logan. “And if you hurt him, you’ll wish I’d only killed you.”
Roman chuckled, flashing a smile at Logan over Patton’s curly head. “Aww, look at then, they’re bonding!”
Logan looked up at his partner and back to Gale Force. “They’re bonding over death threats. I don’t think this is how I expected a hero-villain team-up to go.”
“It’s okay, Doc, you and me are clearly the pretty faces of our respective teams next to the brawn of our boys here.”
“Excuse you, I did not get three degrees in the time it takes most people to get one to be called just a pretty face,“ Logan said with an frown.
“Doesn’t make it any less true, though,” the Marauder replied with a wink. “Your face is pretty, you gotta accept it.”
Logan stared at the villain. “Is this flirting?”
“Do you want it to be?”
“No, I’m legitimately asking, I’m apparently unable to identify it on my own.”
Virgil and Patton stopped staring one another down in time to hear the last comment. Virgil snorted. “Doc, you have understatement down to an art.”
“Shush, you,” Logan said, blushing faintly.
“Do you have, like, a crush on him?” Roman gushed.
“Please, no-”
“Oooohhhh, he totally has a crush on him!!” Patton chimed in, bouncing in Roman’s lap.
“Reflex, I take all of this back, this was a terrible idea, I’m leaving…”
Virgil gently nudged Logan with a shoulder. “No you won’t. This is too important. And you and I are good, no matter what.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Darling, I think they might be gay,” Roman stage-whispered to Patton.
“And I think you might be annoying,” Virgil shot back. “Enough fucking around. We know your powers, you know ours. What we don’t know is anything about the bastard out here killing our city.”
Logan adjusted the goggles on top of his head. “We can tell you what we know from the Mayor. It’s not much. They clearly can cause some sort of nightmare or hallucination in others. The survivor mentioned the outline of a smile in the dust clouds.”
“Like the Cheshire Cat,” Roman murmured. “How very Carollian.” Logan started, a curious expression on his face as he looked at the taller villain.
Winds gusted around Gale Force as he lifted himself up off of his partner’s lap. “A survivor? Who saw what happened?”
“Yes, a teenage girl. She’s in the hospital.”
“Could we ask her for more detail?” Virgil mused aloud. “Get a full description of events, see if there are any little details she may have missed?”
“It’s worth a shot.”
~~~~~~~~~~
To say that the hospital staff reacted oddly to seeing the until-recently most prominent villains strolling in the front door, accompanied but not restrained by some of the best-loved heroes would be putting it mildly. Reflex had to undergo a brief concussion test administered by a well-meaning emergency tech, and Doctor Vectorious had to calmly talk a doctor into putting the defibrillator back on the wall and stop brandishing it as a weapon.
Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, Virgil politely asked after their patient.
“Ah, yes. She’s conscious and stable, if still very shaken. Her family is in with her right now.”
“Can we see her?”
“Not all of you! Pick just one, and her mom stays no matter who it is.”
Virgil nodded. “We should ask who she wants in there. Who she’d be most comfortable with. She’s just a kid, after all.”
The doctor nodded. “I’ll ask. You may wait here.” She paused, looking around the waiting room with many sets of staring eyes. “On second thought, follow me.”
Patton seemed completely oblivious to their observers. Roman stared at his surroundings as they walked, sniffing the air frequently. Virgil walked closer than normal to Logan, accidentally bumping him several times as he fought the urge to shrink into the hoodie he wasn’t wearing.
The doctor showed them to a smaller, empty waiting room and left them there with a brisk nod.
“Why’s it smell so weird here?” Roman finally asked.
“Weird?”
“Like, sharp. Stinging in smell form. Kinda acrid, I guess. But also a bit like soap?”
“That’s the antiseptic,” Logan said. “Have you not been in a hospital before?”
Roman went quiet, then finally said, “I haven’t been to a doctor’s office before. Not that I remember, anyway.”
Logan pursed his lips and Virgil was about to speak when the doctor returned.
“The patient has made her request,” she began.
“Yes?”
“...she asked for him,” the woman replied, pointing at the Crimson Marauder.
The group looked to Roman, then back at the doctor as one.
“I confirmed it with her. She specifically requested ‘the red one.’”
Roman nervously adjusted his cape and mask. “Can she speak to me now?”
“Yes, follow me.”
He stepped into the indicated door to see a middle-aged woman with plenty of silver threads in her plump braid helping the young woman on the cot drink from a pink plastic cup. “Um, hi, Ms. and Miss Rodrigeuz. I’m the Crimson Marauder,” he began.
The young woman sat up without her mother’s help, leaning forward eagerly.
“Are you really, though?”
“...would anyone try to impersonate me?”
“I mean… I saw the group. You’re with the heroes again. Are you still the Marauder if you’re back?” she asked with a bruised smile.
“Back…?”
“You don’t remember me, do you. I was probably one of many people who thanked you, back in your Prince days.”
Roman’s eyes went wide. “Sofia? That Sofia?” he asked, voice cracking. “The little princess?”
“You do remember,” her mom commented softly, brushing a gentle hand through Sofia’s hair. “She kept that crown for years. Even when she insisted that princesses were ‘only for los niños’, she would keep pulling it out when she thought we couldn’t see.”
Roman swallowed a lump in his throat. “I could never forget. You were the first person ever to thank me. The first civilian to treat me like a real hero.”
“Only the first civilian?”
“I- another hero did, too. Many years ago.”
Sofia tilted her head. Her bruises were shockingly colorful, and she spoke carefully around a tender jaw, but she seemed otherwise in one piece. “Why did you stop?”
“What?”
“You were ours. The Prince of Sycamore Heights. Why did you become a villain?”
Roman looked down. “It’s… complicated. But I thought I could do a better job for our home this way.”
“Things did get better,” her mom said. “For years, it was so much better. After you got rid of the Patrol.”
“It wasn’t just me,” Roman responded automatically.
“You and Copper Eye. I remember,” Sofia said. “I loved watching her work.”
“So did I,” Roman said quietly, swiping at the tear wriggling out of his eye. He swallowed and settled his shoulders, trying to compose himself. “Sofia, can I ask you about what you remember about this attack?”
“It’s not much,” she warned.
“Anything helps. We’re going to get whoever did this. I promise.”
Sofia looked up, meeting his eyes directly. “Don’t promise unless you mean it.”
Roman looked back steadily, and placed a hand over his heart. “I, the Crimson Marauder, formerly the Scarlet Prince, promise you, Sofia Rodriguez: we’ll get the one who hurt you and all those people, or die in the attempt.”
Sofia nodded fiercely. “Here’s what I remember.”
~~~~~~~~~~
The Crimson Marauder sat on a red swing floating from nothing as Gale Force reclined on air beside him. They faced the heroes, who were more sensibly sitting on the edge of the roof of an office building near the middle of the city. All four contemplated the details Roman had shared in their own ways. A tiny tornado ran up and down Patton’s fingers, Roman created and vanished mini constructs, Logan’s fingers tapped so quickly they left erosion trails on the concrete, and Virgil hummed tunelessly under his breath.
“You know what seems weird to me?” Reflex said at length. “I don’t know if this means anything, but your friend seems like an extremely level-headed teenager. And yet...”
“...you gonna finish that or do you just think teenagers are dumb.”
“Oh, I don’t think they’re dumb, they just scare the living shit out of me,” Virgil said with a quirk in his smile. “No, she seems really collected, really rational, and yet she didn’t think twice before leaving safety to get to her family.”
“It’s family,” Patton said curtly. “Of course she didn’t.”
“Believe me, I understand protecting family,” Virgil replied. “But not even trying to confirm? Not even when she saw others running? It seems like she was just operating off panic.”
“You’d know all about that, wouldn’t you, Mr. Brendon Urie Wannabe,” Roman snarked. But he had also reached out and grabbed Patton’s hand, squeezing reassurance to his partner to counteract the dark cloud spread across his face.
“Do you think that tells us something about how the villain operates?” Doctor Vectorious asked Reflex, pushing them back on track.
“Maybe it’s more than just visual hallucinations?”
“Hm, interesting theory, but-” Logan began, when their watches began to blare with a new H.A.T.C.H. alert.
“Fuck, the harbor!” Virgil said.
“Southeast,” Logan said at the same time. He looked up at both villains. “Meet us there.”
Reflex was already soaring away, a streak of black and purple stretching through the city. A second blur joined him, black and white and blue paralleling his trajectory from the ground.
Roman squeezed Patton’s hand once more, tightly. “We’re doing this, yeah?”
“We are. We have to.”
“Okay then. Time for some thrilling heroics.”
As one, they went from sitting to moving, both riding a red hang glider that sped as quickly as the ripping wind that sprang up to carry it.
They soared over the city towards the water, following the heroes. Roman nudged Patton as they approached.
“What is that?”
“Looks like a dust cloud. Someone’s being naughty.”
“Should we land?”
Patton nodded, letting go of the frame to point to roof where the heroes were braced, trying to see into the obscured area. He floated down to land softly, Roman a breath behind him. They stared at the enormous cloud of dust and debris, trying to make out what was happening underneath.
Reflex frowned. “It’s not moving.”
Doctor Vectorious nodded. “If it were a true debris cloud, it should be dissipating or growing, not just staying static. It’s obscuring something, and I can’t tell what.”
“Maybe I can help clear things up,” Gale Force offered, sending winds towards the very center of the obstruction. Dust and rocks and debris blew up and away, out of the three-block radius and into the harbor.
The Crimson Marauder gasped aloud as the cloud faded. “Whatever I was expecting, that wasn’t it.”
The dust cloud had been pushed away. But a dark mass remained. It oozed through the streets, a bulbous form that dragged on corners and sidewalks but left no residue. It was mesmerizing, in an off-putting way. Colors shifted and played over its dark surface like far-off nebulas brought to earth, now an orange veil, now pink, now a green or blue haze. It absorbed light rather than giving any off, but besides the flicker of changing colors, no movement was seen.
“...I know I’m gonna regret this, but I think we should go straight into it,” Reflex offered, stepping out into the open air. “We need to know if it’s solid, and this is where the alert said the disturbance was.”
“Are all heroes dumb enough to wander into Definitely-Murderous-Glow-Clouds or is it just you?” Gale Force asked mildly.
“All hail the Glow Cloud,” Logan and Roman said at the same time, then scowled at the other for having the same thought.
“What else do you suggest then?”
Patton huffed, and paced on the edge of the roof. “...I don’t know.”
“We’ll send the strongest two first, then,” Doctor Vectorious mused. “‘Flex, you fly in with Gale Force to blow off any more debris, and to see if you can wind-funnel your way in. We’ll back you up, ready to pull you out if needed, or Marauder here can add a construct tunnel if you’re able to open it up. Is that acceptable?”
Patton frowned at what felt like condescension, at this hero trying to tell them what to do. But, with resignation, he realized he didn’t have a better plan, and Valerie’s murderer could be getting away right now for all they knew. Stiffly, he nodded his assent.
Roman cupped his neck, fingers tangled in the curls at his nape. “Be careful, gingerpie,” he whispered. “If you die, I’ll never forgive you.”
“Don’t worry, honeygold, I’ll be your boo no matter what,” Patton murmured back with a grin. He kissed Roman firmly on the mouth, right under his mask.
“I’m too pretty to date a ghost,” Roman complained, but he was smiling all the same.
Virgil rolled his eyes. “Okay, Hurricane Gay-trina, let’s not waste any more time. Can you make a wind tunnel I can fly through without getting hurt?”
Without a word, air raced past them into a clear cone that hollowed out, a tube of rushing wind that stretched from their spot towards the mass. Virgil acknowledged his villain partner with a two-fingered salute and sped down it, rocketing towards the form that continued to shift colors. He extended a clenched fist, bracing himself to collide with the edge, ready to use all his strength to bust through if possible.
Instead of hitting a hard edge, though, he just passed into it as the sun disappeared. Darkness surrounded him, the pitch black of an overcast midnight. He could suddenly hear impacts, crunching rock and shouts and screams, and froze. He couldn’t move suddenly, not without seeing around him. He might hurt those near him worse with too fast a movement or a misplaced step.
Virgil had never expected to experience relief at seeing Gale Force, but the tunnel of wind opened up the mass and brought in Patton and the setting sunlight in a joint beam. “It worked!” Virgil said. “Quick, blow away as much of this as you can. I can try to stun everyone if I need to.”
The villain didn’t pause or argue, but multiplied the cyclone until copies branched out in all directions. They punched through the dark haze in dozens of places, bringing in the scant evening light and blessedly fresh air. Some of the screams faded, and Virgil could finally see the faces of surrounding civilians as their terror faded into confusion.
Both hero and villain could see what had caused the screams. A young villain, a H.E.A.R.T.S. dropout Virgil remembered, had paused in the center of the chaos. They blinked, slowly shrinking their hands back from huge, car-sized fists to normal limbs. The villain looked around them, and down at their torn costume. It was as bloody and ripped as their hands, the bold gold and red of a ringmaster’s coat turned into something out of a horror film. The Contortionist fell heavily to their knees, still shaken.
A burst of blue fire brought attention to the other active combatant. This was a current H.E.A.R.T.S. student, not yet a full hero, and even through her mask it was clear she was terrified. Another flash of light and she popped into being closer to the newcomers.
“V- I mean, Reflex?” she asked in a tiny voice.
“It’s really me, Blynk,” he reassured her, crouching slightly to shrink the almost-foot difference in their heights.
“I- where did they go? The ones attacking me? They were… everywhere.” She balled one hand in the loose blue dress that made up her costume as the other pulled up the attached hood nervously.
“It was an illusion,” Patton explained. “This new villain, Agent Whisper. They make you see things that aren’t there.”
“I couldn’t get away,” she whispered. “No matter how many times I teleported, they were still there to catch me.”
“They’re gone,” Virgil assured her. “You’re safe.” He offered his arms, and the young hero dove into his embrace. Speaking over her head, he looked up at his villain partner. “Can you fully break this up?”
“Here comes Mister Blue Sky,” Patton said with incongruous cheer, expanding the existing funnels. Light filled more and more of their view until the full sky returned and the last of the strange substance melted into air.
A zip and a thud heralded the arrival of the missing hero-villain pair.
“Good work,” Logan told them both. “A small bit seemed to split off, but you cleared the area and appear to have fully disrupted any illusions.”
“They got away?” Patton asked sharply. “Which direction?” He was already started to drift into the air.
Virgil grabbed the loose tunic and tugged him down. “We can’t just chase after them!”
“Why the fuck not?”
The angry question was spat into Virgil’s face, but it was Logan and Roman who answered simultaneously, “We need to help the people here.”
The fading sunlight showed just how right they were. Craters littered the landscape around them. So did bodies. Every visible face was bruised or bloody, but luckily, most were moving as civilians picked themselves up out of the wreckage.
Logan was already confirming that emergency care was on the way as he zipped around the battlefield, assisting where he could. Roman took one look at the injured and started to conjure glowing splints and crutches.
Patton was still staring angrily at the direction Logan had indicated was that of Agent Whisper’s escape, straining at Virgil’s hold. “Let me the fuck go,” he snapped. “I’m not here to be your goddamn hero, I’m here for revenge.”
“You think I don’t get that?” Virgil snapped back. “I want the bastard dead as much as you do, so don’t think for a second that you have a monopoly on rage here.”
“Then what are we waiting for? We’re the strongest and those two both know it. Let’s follow this piece of shit, grind them into dust, and be fucking done with this ‘partnership.’”
Virgil’s grip slackened for a second as he looked around them, a cloud of anger on his face. But it passed, and he pulled Gale Force all the way back to earth. “We can’t just rush in. This isn’t just for revenge: it’s to stop more people getting hurt. And it’s because we’re the strongest that we can’t risk blazing through, because we’ll be the reason more are hurt.”
Patton crossed his arms, glaring at the taller man. “What makes you think I care about a couple of casualties if it means I get revenge?”
“Because you’re still human,” Reflex responded. His gaze was level, understanding. “If all you wanted was their death at any cost, you wouldn’t have come to us. I’m not asking you to admit anything, but I have a feeling you know more about collateral damage than you ever wanted to know.” A nerve in Patton’s cheek jumped at that and Virgil nodded. “Like I said. Not asking you to admit anything. But I get it. I never wanted to be a hero. But then my partner convinced me that it’s not about getting recognition, it’s not about the fights. It’s about doing the best you can for as many people as you can. It’s about using these powers I never asked for to do what others can’t.”
Patton grumbled, but assented. “Fine. What can I do here, then?”
“Help me with the rubble? Drop it in the harbor if you need to.”
Reflex and Gale Force joined their partners in cleaning up the disaster zone. ‘Flex lifted enormous chunks of rock and concrete gently to free trapped limbs or to uncover more bodies. He tossed them into the air, where the wind-manipulator caught them and floated them safely to the water.
The Crimson Marauder flew into the air to check for more injured civilians, held aloft by his glowing hands. He was aware of Doctor Vectorious moving quickly somewhere below him, running up buildings and around the square to find civilians who’d been outside as well as in the surrounding apartments and offices. Was anyone limping? Anyone who needed a temporary bandage? Where was the emergency services van, shouldn’t they be here?
A huge crack of of rubble and rock shifting distracted him, and he whirled to see where the noise was coming from. By the time he registered that it was just Reflex working with Patton (aww, his love was working with one of his crushes!), he’d lost focus and his glow went out. He fell, stomach dropping as he tried to conjure something, anything, even just a mattress or a trampoline to break his fall.
A warm impact hit him as a blur originating from a nearby roof crashed into him and carried them both to a fire escape on the other side of the narrow street. The blur resolved back into Doctor Vectorious, and he found himself being held in the shorter man’s arms.
The speedster stared for a moment, then looked away with a slight pink tinge to his pale cheeks. “You’re, um,” he said, jerking his head towards him without looking back. “Uncovered.”
Roman started, feeling his face. The impact had knocked off his mask, and the hero was pointedly looking away to preserve his identity.
Or, perhaps, Logan was looking away because his internal monologue had been hijacked by the phrase, “Oh fuck, he’s hot.”
Roman quickly conjured a replacement mask and slid out of Logan’s hold to stand on his own again. The hero remained with his gaze averted until a siren’s blare drew close, announcing the arrival of the emergency crew.
“Thank fuck,” Roman sighed, and flew himself down to greet them. He explained quickly that his constructs needed to be replaced now so that they wouldn’t fade if they got too far away. He was already grateful that they’d be detached from him long enough that they hadn’t faded when he momentarily lost focus, and was eager to be able to draw back his energies further.
Virgil, Logan, and Patton ferried the injured from ruins of the street to the vans, including both the young hero and villain to the separate supers truck. Finally, they were able to move out. The heroes had acquired a better-functioning scanner for the villains, one that could call them specifically when they were needed, and allowed the villains to call them securely if they should so choose. About to part, Reflex paused, and offered Gale Force a handshake. Warily, the villain accepted, and the Marauder did too, in turn. Doctor Vectorious was more hesitant, but copied his partner.
Back in Logan’s apartment, the shorter man washed his face thoroughly, still shivering slightly at the remembrance of so many hurt. “How many casualties was it, all told?”
“Ten. All civilians. Both The Contortionist and Blynk are on bed rest, but they’ll recover. Total injuries are at about 25 people, but the techs said at least ten additional civilians avoided worse injuries that could have lead to critical conditions thanks to our timing as a group.”
Logan sighed. “I know I should be grateful that we were able to help so many, proportionally, but…”
“I know.”
“This villain is no joke, Virge. 35 deaths and it hasn’t yet been two days.”
“We’ll get them, Lo. I promise.”
Logan looked up. Virgil was back in civilian clothes that he left here in his partner’s apartment, one of his trusty black hoodies unzipped over a plain tee and sweatpants. Logan had changed back into his version of casual: a button-up not fully buttoned, no tie, and jeans.
“Speaking of promises…” he began. He ran a hand through already-mussed hair. “I was cut off, yesterday. I know that there are bigger, more pressing issues now but I still want to finish the thought I was trying to express.”
“Lo, it’s okay if you don’t return the sentiment, you know that, right? I’ll still love you as a friend no matter what.”
Logan sat next to Virgil on the couch. “I appreciate that, Vee, but that’s not where I was going.”
“Oh?” Virgil asked, smiling hopefully.
“I apologize for my obliviousness, Virgil, and for how long it took me to put this together, but I believe I feel the same type of romantic sentiment towards you as you’ve expressed that you feel towards me.” Logan reached out a tentative hand to take Virgil’s in his.
“You’re sounding like a textbook again, Lo,” Virgil teased, squeezing Logan’s hand.
“Sorry, I just-”
“I’m not complaining, not in the slightest. It’s part of you, ya know? It’s part of the charm.” He shifted over on the couch until their thighs were touching, and, receiving a nod of approval, draped an arm around his partner’s shoulders. “I love you, Logan.”
Logan blushed deep. “I love you as well, Virgil.”
“Can I kiss you?”
“Please do.”
Lips met in tentative sweetness and softness, neither pushing or needing to. This was them, comfort and companionship that felt as natural as breathing. And at this particular moment, breathing was the more difficult option of the two.
At long last, Logan broke off and looked up into Virgil’s dark eyes. “Are we… dating? It seems like an odd term, or at the very least an odd distinction.”
“I mean. We’re already partners,” Virgil said with a shrug and a grin.
“Oh no, don’t you start on puns too, now. There’s already Dad and Gale Force, I refuse to take any more of this.”
“Okay, okay,” Virgil said, laughing. “I’ll have mercy. Because I love you.” He most definitely did not add in the phrase because it was a relief to say it out loud after so many years of thinking it. He would definitely not continue to sprinkle it in liberally after seeing Logan’s pink-cheeked reaction to hearing it.
“I must say, I was quite impressed by the Marauder today. I thought he’d entirely turned his back on heroing when he realigned, but it appears he really is a hero at heart. Or, at the very least, a super who cares about the well-being of civilians over his personal gain.”
“Almost like people can have a change of heart without a change of personality,” Virgil commented mildly.
“He’s still a villain, though,” Logan added sharply. “And don’t think I didn’t see Gale Force trying to run off before you talked him down.”
Virgil sighed, letting his arm fall off Logan’s shoulders. “He’s not all bad, Lo. He’s just an angry human with far too many scars that haven’t come close to healing yet.”
“So are you. And yet you’re still a hero.”
“But I’ve had you, for nine years. He only has whats-his-name. Roman. Princey. Who’s just as burned, if not quite so angry.” Virgil’s voice was soft.
Logan frowned. “Why make excuses for them?”
“Because it’s not hard for me to picture a different world where I went that direction instead, Lo. I… I could picture myself neutral, hiding from my powers. Or a villain, angry at the city for not finding me sooner. Gale Force understands that. The fury. And besides that… I like them. For all that they’re frustrating and have evil tendencies and all the public displays of affection.”
An eyebrow raised above glasses frames. “You like them?”
“I mean, you know I’ve been flirting with Princey during fights. It’s not just because I’m a walking stereotype of a snarky hero. And the other one, Patton, he’s not bad-looking either.”
“Ah, I see,” Logan said quietly.
"This doesn’t affect how I feel about you, Lo, not in any way,” Virgil rushed to clarify. “It could never. It’ll always be you, no matter if I pursue these other feelings or not.”
Logan relaxed slightly. “I don’t know that I feel similarly, or even could, not when I only realized how I felt about you through a strong platonic bond over literal years.”
“That’s more than okay. You mean the most to me. If you’d rather I keep quiet about these feelings, just let them fade…”
“No, that’s unnecessary. I am not opposed to you, ah, pursuing them, just keep me informed. I do understand the… attraction.” Logan blushed lightly, but coughed and continued. “And as long as you’re safe. They’re still villains, Vee. We can’t trust them, not past taking down Agent Whisper.”
“You may be right. You usually are. But, I don’t know, man. I feel like maybe we can, this time.”
Logan raised an eyebrow again. “Virgil the cynic, wanting to trust people?”
“Oh look, it’s the pot, calling the kettle black,” Virgil replied, shoving Logan lightly in the shoulder.
“Guilty as charged.”
“By the way, can I borrow your phone charger, I wanna call Mom and Mama today, and the sibs if they’re home.”
“Why do you think I bought an extra-long purple cord?”
They were woken early the next morning by yet another H.A.T.C.H. alert. Virgil gave a single breath to regret his poor, poor sleep schedule before changing into his costume.
Mayor and S.E.A.M. Stokes weren’t sure of the exact nature of the disturbance, but they knew it involved supers. In this uncertain climate, that meant sending their best, just to be prepared. At Virgil’s urging, Logan had conceded to alert their villain partners as well.
“What’s the harm in being ready, L?”
“They’re collectively responsible for over fifteen felonies.”
“...yeah, but they’re on our side now.”
Logan fixed his partner with a look.
“I know, I know. We can’t trust them entirely. But you trust me, right?”
Logan softened. “Of course I do. I trust you with my life.”
Virgil paused, blushing slightly. “I… god, I love you, Lo.”
“I love you as well.”
Standing by the window, in full costume, seconds before rushing to whatever crime scene had alerted them today, Virgil stole a moment to pull his partner in close and kiss him softly.
They parted, both pink-faced. “I’ve just got a hunch, Lo. I think we’ll need them, or at least not regret bringing them along. And I swear, I’ll protect you if they try anything.”
And thus, as they surveyed the scene from the top of a nearby building, the villains arrived as well.
“I don’t see Agent Piss-per anywhere,” Gale Force said with a frown.
“We haven’t either,” Logan replied evenly. “But they’ve been targeting super fights so far. It’s only logical to conclude that any fight between persons with enhanced abilities will continue to be targets for them.”
“I’m not participating in your self-righteous state-sanctioned vigilantism,” the Marauder said, lounging against the wall. “Who’s even fighting?”
“They’re a recurring duo. They either partner up or are on opposite sides, it depends on which muse is controlling her,” Virgil explained, gesturing to the dark-clad figure visible from above. Many brilliant lights surrounded her, with more seeming to sprout from the galaxy print on her suit. Tiny constellations flew towards her opponent and swirled around the other’s massive, cascading skirts. With Gale Force’s help, they could all hear the conversation on the wind - a steady stream of chat and compliments, even as star constructs disrupted the princess-figure’s attempts to infiltrate the nearby museum.
“Who’s this?”
“Today? Nebula. You may also know her as Ghost. But she’s not nearly as active as some I could name,” Logan explained, glancing side-eyed at where Gale Force seemed to be taking notes.
“Yes, but what about the aesthetic one,” the Marauder asked with a tone bordering on reverence.
Virgil smirked. “She’s known as Lovely Darling. A mesmerizer with a strong affinity for princesses. So you know, pretty familiar, except more people are infatuated with her than just herself.”
Roman pouted at the tall hero and opened his mouth to object when the air suddenly shifted and four sets of eyes snapped to the scene below.
A dark dust cloud was rising, despite the complete lack of debris or destruction from the existing fight. Looking for the details, Virgil saw how the ‘dust’ cloud dragged and stuck on corners as it neared both supers.
“Heads up!” Gale Force shouted, and the air itself carried his voice, surprising them both as they noticed the impending danger. Logan was there a breath later, grabbing them both and pulling them away before rejoining the group in a blur.
“Go in all at once?” Virgil asked.
“On y va,” Roman said firmly, and they moved forward as one. The minute they passed into the cloudlike mass, Roman had the strangest sense of someone muttering, Oh, this should be fun.
And then the world went grey. His limbs went heavy and his heart turned to lead. A sluggishness settled over his entire body as he crumpled to his knees. He couldn’t muster the energy to do anything but struggle to stay upright, and he watched his constructs melt away in a blink of an eye. Of course he couldn’t create anything. He was useless. Everyone knew he was the weakest of their group. No raw power like Reflex, no elemental power like Patton, no brilliant strategy like the Doctor. He just had his little red toys. And now, he didn’t even have those.
It was fitting, wasn’t it? Let everyone see how worthless he was, whether a hero or a villain. He could die here, in this cloud, and the world would not note his passing nor feel his loss. A tear coursed down his cheek and fell onto his hands as he struggle to just barely brace himself. All he was good for was tears. How had anyone been fooled enough to believe anything else? Had they even been fooled? Or had they just been humoring him, pretending that he had something to offer. Seeing his obvious fragility and flattering him the way you compliment a child’s terrible scribbles. Who could ever truly believe in him? His arms trembled, and he collapsed fully, prone upon the ground, awash in despair and listlessness.
Logan was running as he passed into the cloud. He was surprised to see it was only a hair’s width as he passed through, coming into practically the same daylit scene on the other side. He kept running as he looked for the villain. Ro- the Marauder was flying on his right, with Virgil and Gale Force on his left. Was that Agent Whisper up there? The dark, humanoid shape was further back than he’d guessed. He pushed himself to speed up, to get there faster before the villain could escape again. He was reaching a rate of one hundred miles per hour - why weren’t they getting closer? His muscles felt odd, not the normal level of burn for this speed, but the wind was rushing through his hair and he could see the world flashing by through his goggles. Perhaps his workout routine was finally helping him reach new speeds. He pushed harder, blurring into five hundred miles per hour, fighting to reach the villain. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his villain partners had fallen behind him, but Virgil was still there on his left. But Agent Whisper was still so far away. He ran faster, nearing his top speed. He was a blur, a bullet streaking towards its target, but he could still see and feel his whole body. Finally, the dark antagonist was near, and he went to slow down to grab them, incapacitate them, bring them to justice.
But he couldn’t stop. His legs wouldn’t slow, his arms still pumping in rhythm to keep running. He was still moving, still in the nimbus of speed that almost no one could see. He looked frantically around only to see that he’d left Virgil far behind. He tried to turn, but couldn’t. He was just running, running, through the city, past the city, over hills and mountains and water and more mountains and he couldn’t stop. How would he get home? How would he live? How would he see Mom and Dad again, how would he be there for Jem and Bea? How would he be with Virgil, now that they finally were? He’d left him back there, surrounded by villains. He’d left him all alone, the one thing he’d promised would never happen back when they’d first met. How would time pass while he was stuck in this endless speed? Would he even feel it? Would he just run until his body gave out from the stress or exhaustion?
“Please!” he tried to yell. “Please, get me out!”
But his words were whipped away by the rush of air and movement all around him. He was trapped.
Virgil was prepared for his first step into the cloud, for the light to cut out and the fog to surround him. He felt slightly more of the texture this time, a weird film that clung to his skin. He strode in, scanning for the villain, trusting his hearing more than his sight, which extended only about three feet in any direction. He turned almost instinctively to look for Logan at his right, to check if the speedster had dashed in. He saw his partner but… Logan was frozen, eyes jumping and flitting around. His muscles twitched, but he seemed glued to the spot. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. Past him, a red-and-black form lay curled in a fetal position, unmoving.
Virgil reached his partner and love in a single step, reaching out for his shoulder. The impact caused Logan’s eyes to snap open as he cried out in pain. Virgil immediately pulled his hand back, only to see bones protruding from Logan’s arm from how strong his touch had been.
“Fuck, Lo, I didn’t mean to, I’m so sorry-”
“You always are,” Logan snapped back, blood seeping down his shoulder. “Sorry will mean nothing when you kill someone. They won’t care that you didn’t mean it!”
Tears sprang from Virgil’s eyes. He looked down to see the concrete was crumbling where his foot had touched the ground. “Please, Lo, let me help-”
“Don’t touch me!” his friend screamed, terror in his eyes. “Stay back!”
Virgil swallowed hard and obeyed, stepping back, but craters formed with each step. He backed into something and whirled to see a huge wall sway and fall, crushing those who’d been unlucky enough to be sitting behind it.
“Stop it!” Logan yelled, and his terror had shifted to hatred. “You ruin everything you touch!”
“I don’t-”
“Just hide away, Virgil. Just leave this city, leave your family, hide away where you won’t hurt anyone anymore. You’re a threat to everyone around you, so just go!”
Tears coursed down Virgil’s cheeks. “Lo, please-”
“You are and always have been nothing more than a ticking time bomb, Virgil. Didn’t Sandry teach you that?”
The tall hero froze. Logan no longer sounded like himself. Virgil knew his dearest friend would never mention that, no matter his anger. No one would - except Virgil himself. Logan’s words were Virgil’s own, the ones he directed against himself on all the dark days. The world crumbling at his touch, inadvertent pain against the one he loved? This was his own private nightmare made real. He took a deep breath, in for four counts. Hold for seven. Out for eight.
“I am not a monster,” he whispered to himself. “I have enhanced abilities. I use them to do the best I can to help others. I pull my punches, I take care to not use too much force. I don’t hurt my loved ones. I am a hero because I try to be one, and I succeed at an above-average rate.”
Slowly, the craters fixed themselves, and the wall re-erected itself. The blood and bones vanished off Logan’s arm, and he was now as he had been, frozen, looking with distress off into nothing as his eyes shifted rapidly. Virgil reached out slowly, gently, to brush his shoulder with a feather-light touch. His partner didn’t respond, but neither did he bruise.
Virgil turned, hearing footsteps. He kept breathing evenly, repeating his mantras to himself, and stepped towards the sound of movement. It was Gale Force, Patton, walking evenly through the mist without hesitation.
Patton stepped through the border of light to dark as easy as breathing. It took him almost ten steps before he realized he no longer heard the heroes and his partner on his right. He turned to see them all paralyzed. Roman’s beautiful, radiant red fire had faded. Patton had been around for enough dark days to recognize the despair etched into his love’s face. He almost ran to him when he saw that the Doctor was frozen too, not on his knees but standing. Doctor Vectorious, who was intriguing and infuriating and condescending and so very pretty seemed to shiver and jerk with some internal movement. Even Reflex had paused, looking confused and distressed. His love and his... partners. Not friends. They were coworkers, if that. Nothing more. What had put them in such a state?
He felt a slight weight on his chest. An impression of tears, of bricks and water and twisted metal. He turned, and walked towards the center of the cloud, seeking Agent Whisper. He was sure he was getting closer, he could feel it. And with every step he saw flashes of the past. A dusty courtyard, the Hundredth-of-an-Acre Wood. A lanky child carrying two giggling girls on his back. Phantom hands smacked his and ran away laughing in a game of tag. Two women smiled down at him, hands linked.
Now they shifted. Bruises and blood appeared, torsos were covered in brick. Limbs became maimed and mangled beyond recognition. And voices drifted out of mouths that couldn’t possibly be producing them.
“You should have saved us.”
“Why were you the only one to survive?”
“You let me die.”
Patton lifted a hand casually to push back the clouds and give himself more visibility. Finally, a form in the mist. It seemed to eat the light around it, a human-shaped hole cut out against reality, a black pit that had no eyes to stare at him.
“How?” a voice asked, shrieking in impossibly high and low octaves at once. It was an eagle’s cry and an earthquake’s rumble, unnatural and natural at once. Patton turned to it, and smiled brightly.
“Oh, kiddo, were you trying to make us feel bad? Here’s a fun little factoid for you!” He grunted with effort as he conjured a cone of air, tightly wound and pointed away from his team. His face fell into a dark mask as he sent the tornado hurtling towards the dark form opposing them. “I’ve felt worse.”
The form dodged easily, but backed up. Reflex appeared at Patton’s side, scowling and tensed to attack. The mist started to lift, helped along by Patton’s winds.
Both hero and villain heard a sound that might have been the crack of rock and might have been a swear. Clouds suddenly rushed past them, flowing from their backs towards Agent Whisper. They swirled around them and starting to soar into the air, a column of dark clouds even as the last traces faded from the square. Reflex shot off from the ground, ready to give chase, but in a breath the clouds were gone and out of sight.
“Fuck,” he said, coming back to land. “That was rough. How were you so unaffected?”
“It’s just ghosts,” Patton replied with a shrug. “I’m always surrounded by ghosts. I’m more worried about our partners.”
Reflex nodded, and they both flew over to where Roman and the Doctor were recovering. Patton was immediately kneeling at Roman’s side, rubbing a warm, grounding hand on his lower back.
“I’m here, love,” he whispered. “The dark is gone, you’re safe, and wonderful, and deserving of all the love I could possibly give you and at least twice as much on top of that.”
Roman stirred, slowly uncurling out of the fetal position. “Sunshine?” he asked raspily. “That’s really you?”
“It’s me, my ruby. I’m here. I love you. You deserve that love.”
Roman moved slowly to sitting up, shuddering. Patton continued to rub small, comforting circles on his lower back, the other hand coming up to run through Roman’s silky, dark hair.
“How did it come on so suddenly, Pat?”
“Agent Whisper, sweetness. I guess that’s what the illusions are - a blast of bad emotions, and our brains fill in the rest.”
Roman shivered and nodded. “Makes sense. And I’m already starting to feel better. Thank you, honeybunch. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Virgil half-listened to the villains’ conversation but his main focus was on Logan. He gently touched his arm, still flinching at the idea of accidentally hurting him. But the speedster’s eyes had finally gone back to normal, focusing on Virgil’s face instead of cycling rapidly.
“Vee?” he asked, voice barely audible. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Is this real?”
“Yes, L, it’s real,” Virgil murmured back.
“Can I-” words seemed to fail him, but he lifted his arms enough for Virgil to understand him.
“Of course,” he said, smiling as he wrapped his arms around his friend and partner. Logan hugged back tightly, burying his face in Virgil’s muscled shoulders to avoid knowing if there were tears on his face or not. Virgil hugged tighter, lifting Logan fully into the air and surprising a laugh out of the shorter man.
“Hey! I’m not a child!” he complained, grinning.
“But you are my babe,” Virgil responded, teasing. “My tiny boyfriend.”
Logan blushed a deep red at that. “Oh, yes, I suppose I am.”
“That’s gay,” Roman drawled, standing with Patton’s help. “Dear, look at the heroes, they’re gay.”
“Heroes? More like queeroes!”
Logan’s blush didn’t fade as he glared over. “That was terrible.”
“Is that why you’re laughing internally?” Virgil asked blandly, to Logan’s indignation.
“Hey, don’t out me in front of them!”
“Oh horror of horrors, the nerd might actually have a sense of humor,” Roman said, draping a hand dramatically over his forehead. Color had returned to his golden cheeks, and his eyes were practically crackling with rich hazel energy.
“I’m glad you’re both feeling better,” Virgil said, putting Logan back on his feet. “Even if this Whisper fuck got away again.”
“We know what they’re capable of, now,” Logan said. “We can prepare for next time. Or at least brace ourselves for it.”
Patton nodded. “‘Flex and I are proof it can be overcome. So there’s hope for you two as well.”
“Go home and get some rest, gather your emotional strength,” Virgil advised, slipping his hands into Logan’s grip. “I’ve got a feeling we’ll be called again much sooner than we’d like.”
The villains nodded and flew off together, Roman rocketing ahead of Patton.
“Ladybug, slow down,” Patton complained. “You’re going too fast for me!”
“You’re going too slow!” Roman cried happily, looping in circles high and low. “God, I can’t believe how much better I feel now that we’re away from that creep!” He laughed and created a glowing red surfboard. He stood on it and balanced with exaggerated outspread hands, conjuring a huge red wave that crashed over Patton as he flew through the air still. He giggled, and the wave crashed into an explosion of butterflies and ruby wings sprouted from his back.
“Ro, come on, let’s go home,” Patton pleaded. “We can bring the butterflies if you want.”
“Butterflies are old news,” Roman replied, snapping his fingers. The forms around him melted into a huge dragon that carried him on its back as it blew sparkling fire.
“Roro, please!”
“No, not a dragon. A witch!” Roman cried, unhearing. “No, both!” Crackles of energy sparked as the dragon shifted and twisted into a dragon-witch complete with crystalline hat.
Patton sighed. The emotional manipulation had triggered a manic phase, and there was no reasoning with Ro when he was in mania’s throes. He turned in mid-air and flew to their home alone, trusting that his love would come find him when he’d calmed.
Roman flew, creating and destroying and creating anew until the sun started to fade. When the light in the sky began to match the red light of his constructs, he looked up at the clouds and thought of Patton. His love, his salvation, his partner in crime. Literally. Not that they’d been caught more than the one time.
He flew lower, just above the rooftops, finally traveling at normal speeds once more. Just as the forced low had been brief, his uncontrollable high was resolving faster than normal, too. He sheepishly contemplated the apologies he would need to make to his partner for worrying him and leaving him behind when he’d soared into the sky.
He floated down to earth to walk the last few blocks home. He stepped off into a dark alley to change back into civilian clothes.
If only he’d looked a bit harder at the shadows.
Day One - Scream *SPOILERS ABOUND - YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!*
Scream (1996 - Rated R) Directed by Wes Craven. Starring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courteney Cox, and Drew Barrymore.
“What’s your favorite scary movie?”
What was once an innocent question is now an iconic line from 1996′s slasher classic, Scream. While director Wes Craven is known best for A Nightmare on Elm Street where he was also a writer, Craven did not pen Scream. The story comes from the mind of Kevin Williamson who went on to work on I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty; also horror films involving teens, so let’s say he’d found his niche. It’s not too surprising to learn Williamson also created the hit teen series Dawson’s Creek.
If you’ve never seen Scream before, the killer is disguised in a halloween costume which is coined later as “Ghost Face Killer.” He terrorizes high schoolers of Woodsboro, mainly Sidney Prescott, daughter of a woman brutally murdered a year earlier. But her killer was put behind bars, so it couldn’t possibly be the same guy. Right?
Scream grabs you within the first five minutes. Poor innocent Casey Becker, played by Drew Barrymore, is home alone, about to start a movie and chill, when a phone call disguised as a wrong number turns into a game of cat and mouse, leaving her gutted, hanging from a tree for her parents to find. One must always remember the killer from Friday the 13th is, in fact, not Jason Voorhees, but his mother. Better luck next time, Casey.
Killed within ten minutes of the movie, one has to wonder why on earth a star like Barrymore would agree to play that part. According to Barrymore herself, she wanted that role. While she was sought out to play the lead role of Sidney Prescott, once reading the script, she asked for the role of Casey. Writer Williamson originally wanted actress Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) for the role of Casey. As if! Barrymore nailed it, solidifying herself as an official Scream Queen with her memorable and iconic scene.
While audiences are recovering from Casey’s shocking death, we’re introduced to the main protagonist, Sidney Prescott, played by fresh faced Neve Cambell, star of The Craft and drama series Party of Five. Portrayed immediately as young and naive, we see her being pressured to be more sexual by her boyfriend Billy Loomis, played by cutie Skeet Ulrich, donning his best Johnny Depp look. Depp stars in Nightmare on Elm Street, so maybe Craven figured that “look” was part of some kind of horror film formula for success. Who knows?
We learn Sidney and Billy have been dating for two years. My first thought? Two years and this guy is still whining about her being a virgin? Dumpppp himmmmm. But apparently it wasn’t always like this. The beginning of their relationship started out hot and heavy (but which relationship doesn’t, amirite?) then somewhere it falters... Sidney grows a bit cold as far as physical touch goes. Ah hah. That would be when her mom was brutally raped and murdered.
The quaint (but rather rich... I mean, everyone’s living in these huge fancy farmhouses and none of these kids seem to have jobs, other than Randy, whom I’ll get back to soon) town of Woodsboro is shooketh. They haven’t seen crime like this since Sid’s mom.
With Sid’s dad out of town for work, Sid waits around for her best friend Tatum (Rose McGowen) to pick her up for a sleepover. Sid gets a prank call and assumes its their friend Randy. Told you I’d come back to him. Randy works at a video store and makes many references to scary movies. In fact, the movie itself is very meta. Lots of name dropping and parallels to other horror classics. “Randy” gets Sid to chat about scary movies where Sid confesses she hates them because they’re all the same. “The big breasted actress that can’t act always runs upstairs instead of outside; it’s insulting” (I’m paraphrasing) which is comical because once she learns the voice on the phone is not Randy, and the person calling is actually in the house and attacks her, she can’t get out the front door, forcing her to run upstairs.
Hiding herself in her bedroom, Billy pops into the window and a cell phone falls out of his pocket. Dun dun dun! All signs point to Billy! There’s no way it can’t not be Billy! But we are so conditioned by Scooby Doo as kids. It’s never who we think it is. There’s always a red herring. There’s always a twist. So while we believe they want us to think it’s Billy, we’re smarter than that. We know it can’t really be him. Because where’s the fun in that? Giving away the killer so soon? Nah bruh. We’ll wait for the big epic “ah HA, I knew it wasn’t Billy” moment.
After a pit stop at the police station where both Sid and Billy are questioned, Sid stays over at Tatum’s house where the killer phones yet again, accusing Sid of “fingering the wrong guy again.” Whoa, whaaat? The wrong guy? AGAIN?
It’s not long after we learn that Sidney testified against her mother’s killer, Cotton Weary, putting him away for good. Tabloid journalist (think today’s TMZ) Gale Weathers played by Courteney Cox in a horrid neon green dress suit believes in Cotton’s innocence. She made bank writing a book about the tragic event surrounding Sid’s mom and Sid ain’t too happy about it.
Running into Billy at school, Sid and Billy chit chat about how the anniversary of the death of her mother is coming up and Billy thinks Sid should just “get over it” already. Because he got over his father leaving a year ago. Because that’s totally the same thing.
Boyfriend of the year right there. What a sociopath. Here’s where we get back on board thinking “Yeah maybe it’s Billy... who else could it be?”
The town of Woodsboro is put on a curfew until the police can get to the bottom of things. But kids will be kids and kids will have parties when parents are away and why are the parents always away? Randy and Stu (Stu would be Tatum’s goofy boyfriend played by over-the-top Matthew Lillard, and Stu just happens to be Billy’s ride or die) chat about Billy. Randy thinks Billy’s the killer. Stu laughs, but defends his buddy. The signs are starting to point more towards Sid’s dad. The police haven’t been able to get ahold of him. And when they checked the phone records for the calls made to Sid, they weren’t coming from Billy’s phone, but rather Sid’s dad’s phone. Uh oh. Could it be with the anniversary of mom’s death, dad is finally losing it?
At Stu’s house, teens are drinking beer and watching scary movies, provided by Randy. The killer’s there and Tatum meets her end, getting stuck in a doggy door and her neck snapping. Billy shows up to the house after this happens, again, making us believe he’s the killer. No one cares about Tatum’s whereabouts I guess, and Sidney slips away with Billy, upstairs. Two high schoolers headed upstairs into a bedroom, what could possibly happen next? Downstairs, Randy lists off rules for surviving a horror film.
Number one, never have sex. Number two, never drink or do drugs. Number three, never say “I’ll be right back.”
Remember those rules and you too will be around for the sequel.
This film is full of clever bits. While everyone is watching Halloween, Randy announces “obligatory tit shot” and just as the actress in Halloween bares her breasts, the shot then turns to Sidney taking off her bra but she gets blocked from view by Billy. Hah!
Yada yada yada, Sid and Billy break rule number one and Billy is next to be killed. This is when we believe we were right all along. It wasn’t Billy after all. The tricky movie makers tricked us but we secretly knew it wasn’t really him. Sid escapes out the window after being chased around a bit. The killer goes downstairs where Randy is now all alone on the couch watching Halloween. Randy is played by Jamie Kennedy and if you remember, Jamie Lee Curtis is the lead in Halloween. So Randy’s on the couch shouting “Jamie look behind you” as the killer sneaks up behind him. Thankfully, Randy is saved by Sidney screaming for help outside and the killer leaves him, for now.
More death happens, yada yada, it gets bloody. Sid ends up back in the house and Randy and Stu fight over who the killer is. Stu blames Randy and Randy blames Stu. We’ve seen Randy and the killer in the same room, but we’ve never seen Stu and the killer in the same room.... hmm. Something to think about. But not something Sid has time for, so she closes the door on both of them. Billy comes stumbling down from upstairs, covered in blood. Now that Sid is positive Billy isn’t the killer, she’s comfortable with him taking the gun from her, to be the protector now, even if he is half dead.
Billy lets Randy in and ends up shooting him. Whaaat? Sidney tries to escape, confused as hell, obviously, and bumps into Stu who came in through the kitchen. Stu pulls out a voice changer and speaks exactly like the killer and everyone is shocked to discover it was THE TWO OF THEM THIS WHOLE TIME! They admit to framing Cotton, who’d been having an affair with Sid’s mom. Apparently Sid’s mom had multiple affairs and was the reason Billy’s dad left. Dun dun dun.
Stu pulls Sid’s dad out of another room, bound and gagged. He and Billy plan to stab each other, kill Sid, then shoot Sid’s dad, making it look like Sid’s dad went on a killing spree, and then offed himself. Billy and Stu would be the only survivors. How convenient!
But things don’t work out how they hoped. Billy ends up getting shot. Then Randy, who isn’t dead, says “This is when the killer comes back for one final scare” and Billy comes back for one final scare before Sidney puts a bullet in his head.
The way the movie is shot, the clever way it pays homage to other horror classics, makes it so lovable. It’s really revived the horror genre, or at least the slasher portion. Many sequels have since been filmed, as well as a television series, and comical spoofs. It’s definitely a film that I would call a masterpiece of story telling and directing. Definitely add this one to your Halloween and Chill list for October. It’s available to rent on Amazon. Also check with your cable provider, as it was free on demand for me.
and if you may ... 49 too .. “Im too sober for this” .. Please ? Thank you ::!!
😊 another awesome prompt: 49. “I’m too sober for this”
Warning: mentions of underage drinking
Sorry this came out so freakishly long. Enjoy.
oOo oOo oOo oOo oOo oOo oOo oOo
As Senior resolutions went, mine was daring, brave, empowering and completely futile.
Since my best and only friends Gale and Madge graduated the previous year and left to pursue their own paths, I saw a chance to reinvent myself. It was gonna be the greatest thing since sliced bread!
I was gonna let lose, let my hair down (literally! Who wears braids to school everyday in their senior year anyway?!?). I was gonna brake some rules and be known as: Katniss Everdeen, the girl who was on fire!.
I had it all planned out.
I was going to shed my quiet, goody-two-shoes, hermit persona behind and become this easy going chick all the cool cats wanted to hang out with, and to my credit, I succeeded pretty much on everything I’d set out to do except the single most important thing of all...
But I’m nothing, if not persistent, hence my current situation, holding a flashlight, illuminating a doorknob, as a group of classmates try to break an entering in the school building after hours.
Real smart stuff for Katniss Everdeen, formerly sensible person.
”Come on man! What’s taking so freaking long?” Asked Marvel Quaid impatiently.
”Almost,” Says Annie Cresta still tweaking her bobby pin into the lock to Dr. Abernathy’s office.
Finnick Odair, Annie’s boyfriend and the father of this half baked idea of a prank, slaps Marvel’s shoulder with the back of his hand, telling him cockily, “Hush dude. You’re throwing my girl’s mojo. Besides, hasn’t your mother told you that patience is a virtue?”
”Ugh... just hurry it, will ya? I’m with twitchy here. Being at Abernathy’s office during the day is bad enough,”
”Johanna, when have I ever fail you?” Asks Finnick at his best friend with a pointed look, then he grins mischievously, “Plus, once we’re inside, will celebrate by raiding old man Haymitch’s liquor stash!” He wiggles his eyebrows at that.
”Wait... what? Nobody said anything about drinking the stuff! I thought we were just switching it with water. This is crazy Finn!”
”Shush it Peeta! Not a good time to act like a chicken shit!” Johanna whispers harshly. “I knew you were gonna wimp out half way!”
Peeta puffs out his already prominent chest, and frowns angrily a Johanna, “I’m not wimping out of nothing!” His intense blue eyes fix on mine for a second, but as usual, the moment I look back at him, they fleet away, returning to Johanna next to Finnick. “I’m just saying, that with every passing second, it’s more obvious this prank wasn’t thought through. That’s all. Plus, we already drank Annie’s dad’s liquor cabinet, I’m pretty sure stealing the principal’s cheap vodka and drinking it in his office is like... a felony or something.”
I’ve been watching Peeta pretty much my whole high school career. It’s not that I just noticed him, it’s just that I just became aware of how much I noticed him when he was around. With Gale’s towering frame out of the way, distracting me, I finally realized I’ve kept track of this blue eyed blonde, ever since I was a tween, and he fed me his own bread the day my father died. His one act of kindness set him apart from everyone else, and Ive finally come to terms with it. But for all my observations of the boy with the bread, I can say he does look a little green right now, but a coward he totally is not!
I let a long breath out, scratching my nose with my free hand. ”I’m too sober for this,” I didn’t actually mean to say it out loud, but it’s true, and it’s out.
”Wait until we’re drinking Abernathy’s poison, baby, that’ll take care of it right away!” Says our resident meathead, and designated muscle, Cato Alexander. His voice is so greasy, and obnoxious I scowl at him in disgust, but Peeta surges up from his hiding spot, to crouch in front of me, facing Cato. I think he’s trying to shield me from his leering eyes.
”Yeah, well, I still think we should stick to the original plan of just dumping it all out and switching it with water, and get the hell out of here ASAP.” Peeta grunts, more than says.
”Abernathy keeps his ‘secret’ stash under lock and key, though.” I offer. “Wiress told me he’s even putting some alarm system in place, because he has the bottle in the same place he keeps the final exams.”
Johanna rolls her eyes, blowing a bubble with her gum, and finally runs a hand through her spiky short hair. “Come on Brainless, that was just Nuts, being her nutty self. There aren’t any alarms here. Old man Haymitch is an angry drunkard, not a paranoid one.” Her gum pops and she chews on happily.
”Done!” Crows Annie triumphantly.
”I knew you could do it, Hon!” Says Finnick sporting that lovesick face he always has when speaking to Annie. He kisses her in the lips, and Johanna makes pukey faces at them while the rest of us try to look away uncomfortable.
”Dude, get a room!” Says Marvel.
We all slip into the open door on tip-toes, and come to Dr. Abernathy’s desk. There, where drawers used to be at one time, it’s a safe, with a digital keypad.
”Great!” Whines Marvel, “Deciphering this code is gonna be harder than guessing what’s in Mrs. Sae’s mystery meat stew!” He says throwing his arms in the air.
”I knew this was a bad idea. We suggest we just get out of here right away.” Says Peeta sweating profusely.
I can see Johanna’s mouth open to tell Peeta off, but whatever nasty comment she was gonna make we never found out, because all hell broke lose in the blink of an eye.
It turns out the old drunk was a bit paranoid after all, and Wiress Martin’s tip about the alarms was good. We tripped the silent system as soon as we picked the lock. It took the police all of five minutes to flood the school.
They caught Johanna first, then Marvel. Finnick was in top notch physical condition, and too fast for the cops, but Annie tripped and fell and when he came back to help her up, they too got apprehended. Cato ran off like a headless chicken screaming “Abort! Abort!” at the top of his lungs, until he fell silent. I’m not sure what happened to him. As for myself... I was standing there in the middle of the room, frozen. Then like in slow motion, Peeta started yelling at me.
”Run! Katniss, run! What are you doing? Run!”
When I don’t move, he pushes me out the door, when that doesn’t work, he grabs my hand and drags me with him, but although I’m great at track and runs, I’m not match for the rush of adrenaline he seems to be having, so he finally turns around, throws me over his shoulder like I’m a sack of flour, and off we go out of the building.
I’ve gather my wits enough to know we are out of their reach, but also that we have to come back and give ourselves up before someone rats us out. And someone will. I don’t trust Marvel or Cato.
”Peeta,” I call. “Peeta, we’re safe now. You can put me down!”
It takes me punching his back several times to get his attention, but he stops, and puts me on the ground gently. Then, out of the blue, his lips crash against mine in a passionate, all consuming kiss, I’ll be hard pressed to ever recreate with anyone else.
”You’re okay, you’re okay, you’re okay,” he mumbles over and over between kisses, all the while his hands cup my face, then smooth down my arms, around my back, cradle my head.
We break apart heaving for air, our foreheads resting against each other.
” I’m sorry for overstepping.” He finally breathes out, “but that was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me, and I live with Winnifred Mellark.” He chuckles raggedly. It’s no secret his mother is a piece of work witch that used to hit her children until they grew too big and wide to intimidate anymore. “If at some point, you feel the urge to slap me in the face, I’ll take. Gladly. I deserve it.” He chuckles again, “It was worth it.”
”What was worth it?” I ask dizzy.
”Finally plucking up the courage to kiss you.” He pulls away from me, for once in his life, his eyes aren’t avoiding mine. As he stares at me, hungrily, he adds, “I figured we have to go back and face Principal Abernathy sooner or later, which means my mother is gonna find out about this debacle, and she’s probably gonna try to kill me. I figured, if I’m gonna die, I rather die knowing what it felt like to have finally let you know how much of a goner am I for you.”
”Oh,” it’s all I can say.
He’s starting to get anxious at my lack of response, he’s blabbering some nonsense about having a shot at being friends and whatnot, but his frantic backpedaling won’t do, so I do the only thing I can think of, and grab his biceps for balance and surge up to shut him up with another kiss.
”We’ll go back there together,” I tell him against his lips.
He nods, not letting go of me, “Together.”
We will go into this as one.
Now, as a new mum, celebrating her daughter’s first Christmas, Rose takes up writing her Christmas letter to Father Christmas once again.
Rose’s Christmas letters are excerpts from her life with her beloved Tentoo and their children in Pete’s World, written once a year, for each of 31 years.
Dear Father Christmas,
It just doesn’t feel like Christmas this year. The girls are off studying (that’s nothing new), but Wilfred has left us too. He’s decided to do a bit of travelling on his own this year, a world tour. He’s a restless soul, he is, not a scholarly type like his sisters (they can buckle down and study when they need to). No, Wilf’s much more like his Dad, always needing to be on the move. He’s spending Christmas on a beach in Australia, surfing and eating shrimp from the barbie, and generally having a good ol’ time.
So, I guess that makes me and the Doctor official “empty nesters”, yeah?
Now I know how mum felt all those years ago, when I left to travel in the TARDIS. She must have been so lonely. At least I have my Doctor to keep me company; she had no one. And, at the time, I never gave it a passing thought how alone and worried she must have been… just the way my babies probably don’t think about me.
Look at me, blubbing away. Just as well I came out here to the treehouse. The Doctor would have been worried to see me cry. It’s been happening a lot recently. I’ll have to face the music soon enough, though. I can feel his concern, but at least he knows I’m safe, and he understands when I feel like I need some time to myself (well apart from Snowflake: she’s curled in my lap. You’re not leaving your mum, are you, darling?)
It’s a little chilly out here, to be honest, but being up in the treehouse makes me feel so much closer to the kids. So many memories here, and besides the view is unparalleled! The sky is so clear tonight, and the view from here is spectacular, though I can’t see many of the stars right now; the moon is directly overhead, in its last quarter but still so bright it’s hard to see anything else. But it is a gorgeous thing all on its own.
I’m always in awe of the fact that I can actually make out some of the Lunar colonies. So much has changed in the last few years, and Torchwood has been at the centre of it all. The Doctor contributed his extensive knowledge about space bases (after all, he’s run through so many in his lifetime!) and supervised the design team and the actual installation. It never gets old, witnessing first hand, humans taking those first few steps into space, especially since I know what the future has in store for them (the privileges of being a time traveller.)
The Lunar colonies are actually becoming very well established now (you’ll need to start visiting the moon on Christmas Eve, Santa, if you haven’t already. The first official Lunarians… Selenites… (I dunno… The debate for a proper name is still on. Mum just calls them all Loonies!) were born there early this year. I don’t know how you’ll keep up once humans spread across the universe!)
Of course, Hope has decided to be a part of it all: she has a position as a physician on Lunar Base Shepard lined up for the coming year, once she graduates. She loves the idea of “pioneering” and has her sights set on eventually going on to Mars once proper bases are established there. That’ll be a while though, and thank goodness! The Doctor had a very bad reaction when she mentioned it. I’ve very rarely seen him so bloody frightened: pure fear and dread. He never could explain why, exactly, just that he had a feeling it was a very bad idea and muttered on about fixed points and such for hours afterwards.
But that’s years off. In the meantime, I’m just missing my babies so much. It’s funny how the holidays are the times we tend to miss them most. The rest of the year, since Wilfred went travelling, me and the Doctor (and Snowflake) have been too busy off adventuring in the TARDIS to really dwell on their absence too much. It’s almost like old times, and I mean really old times, back in the Prime Universe: the two of us; lots of running; saving the universe… only a bit slower than we used to (not exactly spring chickens, us!) and with a lot more vacationing in between… and with a cat (something my Prime Universe Doctor would never have entertained!) But now, it’s all so completely brilliant! It’s so good to know we can still make a difference out there in our own little way.
But now, standing still, that’s when it sinks in… the loneliness.
We’re only really here for the Hand in Hand feast, and Mum’s New Year’s Gala, back in full swing this year, now that she’s fully recuperated. It’ll be at least a full week before we’re back running through the stars!
But that doesn’t mean we can’t go for a short trip, does it?
Ah ha! Right on cue, here he comes: My Doctor. He must have felt my itchy feet over the bond, because he’s beaming away and shouting up at me “Where to, Rose Tyler?”
I guess I’m off on another great adventure… even if it’s just for a few hours!
--ooOoo--
We’re back, Santa! Made it in just in time for me to finish my letter to you… it’s almost midnight!
So, I was shivering when we set off, and the Doctor decided we should go somewhere for hot chocolate. Who am I to argue with that? Years ago, he’d discovered there was a Planet Valentine in this universe. We’d been to the one in the Prime Universe, back when he was still wearing leather (that was an adventure and a half!) and the Doctor had proclaimed one of the cafés there (The Cupid’s Arrow) had the best chocolate treats anywhere in the universe, hands down. We’d yet to properly visit this universe’s version and agreed it was finally time to discover if it was up to scratch. Sure enough, both the planet and The Cupid’s Arrow were just as tacky and over-the-top as I remember, and the hot chocolate was just as gorgeous.
I briefly wondered why we had never come here before (the kids would have had a blast!) but as we were seated at our table, and it ascended on its anti-grav platform through showers of confetti, I looked around me at all the other patrons, and all the reasons why this was not a “family” adventure came rushing back to me. I could feel my cheeks flushing in embarrassment and, I admit, a bit of arousal. This was indeed the planet of love, and many of the customers of The Cupid’s Arrow were very, very, very… sexually uninhibited! The Doctor, hearing my thoughts very clearly, waggled his eyebrows at me and gave me a cheeky wink.
Laughing and very glad it was just the two of us, we placed our orders on the touch screen. I should mention, our family is very particular about how we take our hot chocolate. Me, Charlie, and Wilfred all prefer loads of miniature marshmallows, but the Doctor and Hope prefer whipped cream with chocolate curls. And we always get into a huge debate about which way is best, the whole family, all five of us… together. So, of course, while we waited for our cocoa to arrive, me and the Doctor couldn’t resist starting in on the familiar argument. But it just wasn’t the same without our three not-so-little trouble-makers contributing their two pennies worth, and it didn’t take long before I was crying again.
Blimey, it doesn’t take much to set me off these days. Mum thinks it’s an early sign of menopause (most of my uterus may be gone, but the doctors managed to save my ovaries, so she may very well be right. I’m about the right age for it: forty-seven.) Poor Doctor, he has a loooong few years ahead of him with menopausal-me. And he’s just so lovely and sweet, holding me when I need it, and letting me know how loved I am (because it’s easy to forget when I get into a state like this.)
It wasn’t long before the sparkly, fuchsia Droid-waiter appeared with our hot chocolates. It fluttered its long lashes at me, its heart-shaped deely-bopper eyes bobbing slowly as it expressed concern for my tears. It was so ridiculous I couldn’t help but smile and thank it for asking after me. After it flew away, me and the Doctor broke into gales of laughter, again. He wiped my tears away with his thumbs. “Better?”
Oh, I felt so much better, and apologized for being such a nutter.
He grinned at me, took a swig of his chocolate, and with a full, whipped cream mustache, leaned in and gave me a big, sloppy, creamy kiss. “Now you look like a nutter too!”
I gave him a (loving) shove and told him he looked like one, as well.
“Oh, yes!”
And, oh Santa! I made a startling discovery as I licked the cream from my lips (and then from his.) I discovered that I really, really liked hot chocolate with whipped cream and chocolate curls, and he discovered that he enjoyed marshmallows, especially the little gooey bits that stuck to the edges of my mouth. So we decided on an exchange… and then, well… we might, possibly have got rather enthusiastically involved in the uninhibited spirit of Planet Valentine. I even forgot about my children for a little while there… But I did remember to pick up some chocolatey treats for them and my mum before we left.
I hope I’m not on your naughty list, now…
Happy Christmas, Santa. I bet you and Mrs. Claus would enjoy the Peppermint Hot Chocolate at The Cupid’s Arrow. It’s so good! Love to both of you, the elves, and the reindeer too!
Hey, Luna, are you still doing the ask thing? If so, I was wondering if you had any headcanons regarding the Leonhart and Heartilly extended families? As in, do Squall, Linoa or Ellone have other still living relatives? People always talk about the parental issues in this game, but the rest of their families possibly being around never gets brought up.
I’m always “doing the ask thing,” haha~
(pardon me I’m gonna ramble real quick and then I’ll answer your actual questions)
I actually used to do this quite a lot before I got a new job and had to move my entire family of three people and eight(8, VIII) cats 500 miles northbound. Which was…incredibly stressful, and I just had no energy or brainspace left at the end of each day to communicate much, if at all, with large groups of people. So this stuff was right out. It pretty much tore me away from tumblr for a year and a half. I’ve been really bummed about that and kept trying to “get back into it,” but my several meager attempts at jumping back in got sidetracked by life responsibilities, and especially with tumblr’s new restrictions on external links not being searchable, the whole trawling for art thing I used to do just isn’t as feasible at this point in time because I have to edit each post very carefully so it will still show up in a search. That’s time-consuming. Maybe when I go back to 3rd shift in December (I hope) I’ll be able to art-hunt “full time,” again, but I just have a limited space in which to do that, now.
However, I can still do asks! And I really enjoy them, they’re fun and engaging and, hell I admit, I like it when people want to hear my opinion on things. But I was having a hard time, uh…asking for asks, haha. It felt too much like I was begging for attention. But then stuff happened and I had the worst pain spike I’ve had all year, and I kinda just broke down and said I needed a distraction. My chronic pain issues can be absolutely debilitating, and can lay me flat in bed for days (I had to take two days off work last week). But if I can manage to engross myself in something creative, it’s like a shot of cortisone. I think I get something of a rush, an adrenaline/endorphin kick out of it, and it does a lot to mitigate whatever the hell it is that causes my problem. I mean, that’s probably true of a lot of illnesses; you get attention and positive feedback and your brain rewards you with pleasant chemicals. But whatever, it worked and now I feel like I’m getting back in the game. I just have to keep the momentum up, now.
*cough* Ahem. So you asked me a thing. I will answer.
I do have headcanons about Squall’s extended family, specifically. I’ve not built out Rinoa’s yet…partially because it just never really comes up in the stories I’ve either plotted out or written. So I can’t answer that part of it–yet–but I can talk about Squall’s.
Working backwards: starting with Laguna’s side, Laguna is the oldest of two siblings, and not one, but both of them are kinda “black sheep” in the family. Partially it was their upbringing; Their mother, Elga Loire, was overworked and underappreciated, often working two jobs to keep food on the table (which she did very well). She didn’t have a lot of time to spend with her kids because of this, and the main reason for it was that their dad, Sevren Jr., was…kind of a loser? I mean, no, that’s not a good word, but a lot of people would call him that. He was an inventor. And always, always on the verge of the one that would make it big, this time. Automated chocobo saddles, “sliding” shoes to make walking more efficient, paramagic-powered chairs….yyyeah. You get why they were broke all the time. Sevren often traveled to demonstrate his newest creations, so he was absent a lot of the time, too. But when he came back, he would always bring the boys–Laguna and River (you must see where I’m going with this double-entendre)–some new toy or strange item from whatever country or town he’d visited.
This was fascinating to Laguna, in particular. Even as a kid, he dreamed of traveling the world. When he got older, joining the army seemed like the fastest way to do that, soooo….he roped his two best friends into joining with him. Heh.
Now, River…wasn’t into that stuff so much. He thought it was silly. He preferred to help Elga when she was at home, and even when she wasn’t, he ended up doing a lot of the house chores while his older brother went out and nearly died repeatedly trying to do dumb things. River was ‘fine’ just keeping to himself, reading and listening to music when he could get the radio to pick something up. As he grew up, he became a bit of a…punk? Like, he would be listening to Bad Religion in 1992. On the other hand, maybe Dream Theater when he was feeling happy. I imagine him looking a lot like Leon in KH2, but with hazel eyes (Sevren’s were brown) and no Griever all over his clothes. He cut his own hair so it always looked a bit jagged and unkempt, and he left it semi-long. Just generally prescient. He became pretty resentful of authority because he saw how it treated his mother and conspired to keep them all poor, and him too, when he got old enough to get a job (Laguna never had one until the army). It made him all the more determined to help his mother (and father, to an extent) weather the storm until the tides changed.
But then…well. They changed. But not for the better. Their dad died, and very suddenly, of an embolism. And, bitter as she was about having to support the family nearly single-handedly, Elga Loire loved Sevren quite a bit, and fell into some pretty deep broken heart syndrome. Inconsolable, she lost both her jobs. Laguna had already traipsed off to the army with his friends, and wouldn’t be aware of any of this for several weeks. River was left to care for their mother alone, and although they owned their small home, she had to sell it just to make ends meet. She moved in with a friend, and River…well, she sent him to the army, too. She insisted, thinking it was the best way to get both her sons out of this mess. Laguna already seemed to be doing well.
River did not do so well. He survived boot camp, but deserted his first year in service.
Laguna never heard from him, after that…and their mother passed away not too long afterward.
So…that’s Laguna’s end of it. As far as anyone knows, River is still out there. But Laguna hasn’t seen him in nearly 30 years. So, Squall has a missing uncle out there, somewhere, maybe.
Raine’s side…haha, geez, I might need to make a chart. In some ways, Raine is easier because she has no siblings and doesn’t know who her dad is. But I’ve traced her lineage back a bit further, and it gets…weird, in places. I might not be able to describe all of it, here.
Raine’s mother’s name is Gale. Gale is still alive, and Squall does meet her, once. It’s a solemn, one-time meeting, more an acknowledgement than a reunion. But it’s good. Gale is very practical. She never married, and never told Raine’s father she was pregnant (she didn’t like him for a permanent fixture). She was also a businesswoman. She owned and ran a hotel in middletown Dollet for many years. That’s where Raine got a lot of her experience before setting out on her own. Gale has sandy brown hair that she keeps short, and looks a bit like a taller Ellone in business casual, haha. But, but–those blue eyes. She has those. Her relation to Squall is evident.
It’s important to remember that although I enjoy both “he named himself” and “it’s Raine’s maiden name” theories, I’m pretty firmly in the camp of Raine’s last name being Leonhart. The story of Gale’s mother, Shiara (this is Arashi [storm] with the syllables reversed), depends on it, because she is the originator. I can’t detail the entire thing here–just too long–but the brief synopsis is that Shiara was a sorceress, in a time when sorceresses (”witches”) and “resistance” groups hell-bent on killing them all were in a state of cold war with one another. When Shiara became a sorceress, she panicked and ran away. She ended up being captured by one of these resistance factions, and had what I can only call a very complicated relationship with the faction’s leader, Dericho (this is the river Jericho with the first letter changed, making it phonetically very similar to Derecho, which is yet another type of storm).
Dericho’s faction was called, yes, the Pride, and they operated under a familiar leonine emblem. Of all his ancestors, Squall probably most closely resembles Dericho facially. Dericho is slightly shorter, his hair is a bit darker, and his eyes are a bit more on the grey side, but his posture, the way he carries himself, his facial expressions, his voice, even the sweep of his hair and the length he tends to keep it are all very familiar. A lot of those qualities were apparently recessive and just skipped a couple generations before thy found a match and popped up again.
How Shiara came to have Gale is a story I’d personally rather tell in prose, but I will say that it was Dericho who essentially named her, telling her in all his years of vetting people who want to be worthy of being called a Lion, Shiara was the only person he’d met with the heart of one. She carried that with her the rest of her life.
She is not, sadly, alive, having died at a ripe old age (and not terribly, since she was prepared with a willing successor nearby). She never actually told Gale about her powers, and to the very last, Gale never knew. The touch of sorcery ended there, seemingly. Dericho is also gone.
But I’m not done yet. One more generation, and this time, Hyne’s power is quite evident. Dericho’s mother, Hanwei, was a sorceress, his father was her knight, and they were quite open about it, feeling safe with it in their particular neck of the woods. Dericho was very familiar with the touch of his mother’s magic–she used it with him the way any mother would use a gentle hand, soothing scraped knees, gently grabbing his arm to pull him out of trouble–from fifteen feet away. His father, Mael[strom], was quite happy in his service to his wife and sorceress, and both Dericho’s parents loved him very much. When they embraced him, he could feel their connections tangling around him, and it was a very comfortable, safe way to be a child.
Of course, we can’t have that, can we?
When Dericho was about 5 or 6, they had been attending a fair that ran late into the night. Dericho started to nod off, so they went home early. It was a short distance, so they decided to walk instead of paying to ride a carriage to their home. Unfortunately, as you can probably guess, they were ambushed, by a particularly nasty faction called the Ridgebacks. Upon discovering Hanwei was a sorceress…well, let’s say the result was not pretty. At all. Dericho watched both his parents die, and his mother in particular, because she had no nearby successor. He was then “adopted” by the very faction who murdered his parents before his eyes.
Without going into specifics, they took this traumatized child, a blank slate, and turned him into one of them. But…not quite. By 17, Dericho didn’t know any other way of existing than as part of the factions, anymore, but he knew he still hated the Ridgebacks for what they had done. He murdered his “mentor” of a dozen or so years, killed several people, and took several more boys near his age on his way out of that particular clan. He started his own faction, with his own rules, and one was a “special” way of dispatching witches without having to burn them to dust. The Pride made their name on this and other standards which set their bar just a tad higher. They’d been in operation for almost ten years when Shiara showed up.
Then, as I said, things got complicated.
I should also note that Shiara and Dericho both lived in Centra. It was not long after Shiara flew free that the fateful Lunar Cry occurred, which deposited the Crystal Pillar and destroyed a third of the continent. Shiara barely escaped that disaster with her life…and her newborn daughter.
So….yeah, I think that’s about it, for now. If I ever get to working out my Rinoa’s tree, maybe I’ll put that up here as well, but for now, Squall’s all I’ve got, and his is hell in a handbasket.
I hope you enjoyed it, though!
A test of commitment: a young couple cross the North Atlantic from Michigan to Cornwall
Jessie Zevalkink and her fiancé Luke Yeates, sailed from her house to his – 4,800 North Atlantic miles from Michigan to Cornwall
Luke asked me marry him. My feet didn’t touch the ground, I was airborne in saying yes. Within a month we were discussing sailing trips, big sailing trips, the kind of trips that people spend lifetimes planning. Luke is the kind of guy who chases big ideas. He tackles them and they become his reality. His athleticism in this department is impressive.
I was never hankering to cross an ocean. It rested on my mind as a possibility but it wasn’t eating me, in fact I probably had to be gently sold on the idea.
Luckily for Luke, he is a salesman, and a damn good one. My perspective on sailing oceans changed in meeting someone who had an admirable passion for the sea, and a confident familiarity with handling its multiple personalities. I began to think that I, too, had a small fraction of what he had. We had barely sailed together, but knew that we needed to.
I grew up as a leisurely passenger aboard Desireé, my father’s 1962 Pearson Invicta, sailing the Great Lakes. Then, I had no interest whatsoever in the action of sailing, purely catching rays and swimming to land. It wasn’t until five years ago that I sailed a boat alone for the first time. I bought a 1979 Cal 27 with one of my best friends, and we dreamed of taking it to the Bahamas.
Luke had his first taste of sailing as a kid growing up in New Zealand. The first time Luke sailed an Optimist he decided sailing was all he ever wanted to do. He forged sick notes and skipped school to go sailing. As a 12-year-old, he would disappear for lengthy afternoons sailing, much to the annoyance of his family, as he never told them where he was sailing and when he planned to return. He became obsessed, with racing in particular.
I remember the first night I met Luke, at the Annapolis Boat Show. There may have been tequila involved but one conversation I recall was sobering. Luke and a friend had sailed a Hobie cat around Britain at 21 years old, setting a speed record on the way. I understood his extremity; his pushing of boundaries, which made me feel like I had yet to push mine, even though I thought I already had. Simply imagining being on the trampoline of a Hobiefor 28 days straight, soaking wet and freezing, had my mind ping-ponging with questions. I wanted to know everything.
In agreeing to spend the rest of my life with Luke there was no question about my future on the ocean. When I realised what ingredients we had laid out in front of us, I pitched him my brilliant idea: “Let’s sail from my house to your house, Michigan to England, before we get married. The ultimate premarital test!”
I didn’t even have to finish the pitch before Luke was speaking in numbers, routes, seasons, and logistics. I sat my father down and chose my words wisely: “Dad, can we sail your boat to England?”
Desireéis solid, built by wooden boatbuilders during the early days of glass. She is a beautiful design tastefully crafted by Bill Tripp Jr. She is a yawl rig with long overhangs, a big, full bow and a lovely counter stern, with sweeping sheer lines and low freeboard.
Luke was in love with the demi bulwarks with their mahogany cap rail, essential for keeping all lines on board, not to mention having stopped both of us from sliding off the deck on several occasions. She was designed for the Newport to Bermuda Race, which her sistership won back in the Sixties. This was the first glassfibre design to win an offshore race anywhere. It was guaranteed the boat would be fast and strong enough for any ocean.
The never-ending job list began. Inside an ice-cold storage unit during a northern Michigan winter, we prepped Desireéto cross the Atlantic. With numb fingers we installed self-steering, solar, AIS, a new head, and pieced together a newly rebuilt engine.
We measured the rig for new sails, installed an inner forestay… and the list went on and on. By spring’s first thaw, we launched her and sailed away on 17 April, just a few degrees above freezing.
Our route took us across four of the choppy and unpredictable Great Lakes, out through the ripping currents of the St Lawrence Seaway and into the Atlantic Ocean.
We were to cross the North Atlantic from St Johns in Newfoundland to Falmouth, south-west England. I had never been so terrified and never wanted something so badly. Planning and executing this voyage took everything we had mentally, physically, emotional, and financially. Our relationship orbited Desireé, our conversation rarely straying from the Atlantic Ocean. We were completely consumed.
It took one month to get out of the Great Lakes and over to Montreal, a wicked and arctic experience of frosty decks with both water and air temperatures just a few degrees above freezing. The Great Lakes were fierce, but my motivation to sail the boat to the ocean was to gain the confidence and to prepare for conditions that we expected to be much fiercer.
Heading for ‘Iceberg Alley’
Sailing double-handed on a classic boat was demanding. Our first night out of Quebec City we had to short tack up a narrow shipping channel, all hands required on deck. With 9 knots of current and ships navigating the channel, we both remained awake until the following day. Progress was hampered on several occasions, by headwind gales and wicked tidal currents pushing and shoving us as they pleased. Time was ticking away and we were far behind our ambitious schedule that had been based around career obligations. ‘Iceberg Alley’ was up next, and it was not the place to be rushing.
We opted to sail without radar, agreeing it was just another distraction, another drain on the battery, and another excuse for our eyes not to be on the horizon. A controversial decision? Yes. We entered the iceberg zone on the south coast of Newfoundland where seven bergs had been reported. The sun had set, and I disliked that night more than any other. It was foggy and windy, the kind of fog that messes with your mind. We turned off our running lights to eliminate the back glow, in hopes of seeing just a few more feet ahead of the bow. We dropped all canvas apart from two reefs in the main to slow down. Lightning flashed twice a minute but there was nothing to see besides birds circling, fog, wind, and blackness.
We agreed to take shorter shifts and I went down below to try and rest. I tried to sleep, unsuccessfully, and I smelled ice. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t trust that it was possible to smell ice.
When we switched shifts we sat together for a few moments in the companionway, looking ahead into the fog. I squinted to focus, and gripped Luke’s arm. “Look, look!” Just 200 yards away a wall of white passed down the port side of the boat. Visibility was so poor we hadn’t spotted it until we were already passing it. A chunk of glacier the size of a hotel silently drifted back out of sight.
It was terrifying and magnificent. I’m just a girl from Michigan; this was hard for me to wrap my head around. We decided to stop on Newfoundland’s south coast the following morning and review our iceberg tactics.
The anticipation of crossing the ocean was the worst of it. It was mental preparation for ultimate disaster. An uninsured, borrowed, classic yawl in which I held huge emotional value, captained by two opposites: Luke, a dinghy racer and accomplished super sailor who thrives on speed and efficiency; and myself, the slowest coastal cruiser known to man who knew a thing or two about diesel engines and virtually nothing about sails, a green ocean sailor.
By the time we reached St Johns, Newfoundland, we had learned a lot about the boat, and even more about each other. We had done our studying. We’d read our books and had a thousand conversations with experienced sailors. We took every precaution. Information was everywhere, it was just up to us to decide on the validity of that information, to agree or disagree.
We had to make our own decisions based on our own abilities and our own boat, no one else’s. This is tricky.
The whole reason for sailing all the way to St Johns, Newfoundland, was so that we could sail the great circle route over the North Atlantic, the fastest possible crossing for that section of ocean. Although it is the shortest mileage, timing is tricky. Leave in June and there are icebergs everywhere; wait too long and the ice has gone but it’s hurricane season. You have two choices: mountains of water, or mountains of ice. We decided ice would be better as you can sail around ice… if you can see it. We kept a diligent lookout for the first 600 miles until we were well clear of the Labrador Current.
Violently ill for the first two nights, it took five days for my body to adjust to the swells and sleep patterns. Energy and motivation was restored after week one and Luke and I found our divine rhythm. We were in a water park along for the ride, fine-tuning the sails and the Hydrovane. Days would go by on the same tack with only the most minute of adjustments. Gales and torrential rain would pass by, stirring up the seas and making the simplest of tasks effectively impossible, only to be followed by hours spent floating upon a sea of mercury, rocking side to side in the leftover swells, completely becalmed.
It took 17 days to cross the ocean. Two days of headwinds, 15 days downwind, three days becalmed. We never saw waves over 15ft, or winds higher than 45 knots. We did see three icebergs and six cargo ships, over 102 watch changes. I kept waiting for it to get worse, to meet God in a 30ft wave, to be locked inside the cabin under bare poles. But it never got worse and I didn’t meet any gods. The only thing that locked us inside was rain. We considered ourselves extremely lucky.
Desireécame alive once out on the ocean, beam reaching in 35-40 knots of wind heavily reefed, the staysail set with the Hydrovane self-steering gear engaged, and she proved herself as a truly excellent ocean-going yacht.
However, in under 10 knots of wind the boat would start to wallow in the dying swell, and it took a full sail change using the big asymmetric and the mizzen staysail to get her moving again. We had a bombproof set of Hyde Sails and went through every possible sail combination several times. We tried goosewinged, Twizzlerigged (double genoa goosewinged), poled back asymmetric main, mizzen and mizzen staysail, sometimes when really windy just sailing on the staysail only. The inner forestay and staysail combination was essential for this boat and this trip. The Hydrovane was our best friend and our Mazu weather app prepared us for the gales.
Making landfall
On the 17th evening we flew by the legendary Bishop Rock and made landfall in the Isles of Scilly under moonlight. We dropped the hook in St Agnes under the stars. We drank our last two beers and watched the sunrise in the stillest of waters.
It was the greatest reward, and the greatest sense of accomplishment. After 88 days since leaving Michigan and 4,800 miles in total from ‘my house’ to ‘his house’, Luke and I had solidified our joint capabilities. We had short-cut years of married life getting to know each other’s ‘worst’ selves. In very close quarters, we were forced into endless physically and mentally uncomfortable scenarios. When we made it to the other side, I can honestly say I’d never felt so complete, so entirely connected to another person, so in tune with how I wanted to spend my life, my time, my money.
We believe that any decent coastal sailor is capable of crossing the Atlantic, it is truly simpler than many of the hazards that coastal sailing brings. I never expected to feel so relaxed in the middle of an ocean; I became most anxious when we closed in on land. The nervousness of actually going often forces you to over-prepare, and all those precautions stacked up make for an ultra-safe vessel. And once you understand your ability to cross an ocean, you can go anywhere.
We have agreed to sail Desireéback to my father in Michigan. Now it’s just a question of if we’re going to take the long way or the short way home.
