this isnt even angst but like do you ever think about the inconsistency between the rules of the exhibits organs? teddy can get cut in half and be like 😁✌️ but jed can drown in sand?? excuse me??? does the tablet like...add organs?? like how does that work?? they shouldnt be able to eat/breathe right????

my working theory is that jed actually couldnt have drowned/suffocated. if the tablet didnt give teddy any guts, then it shouldnt have given jed lungs. he was freaking out because theyve never actually tested how to kill one of the exhibits before. he thinks he wouldve died, but in reality he wouldve just kinda been chilling under the sand

I mean- would you test your own mortality? These guys don’t how the magic works any more than we do. Probably less, since we’re able to look at it from multiple points of view. Maybe to them, they’re actually alive every night, and they really don’t want to find out if they can die.

For heart and homeland, what inspired the use of letters to tell the story?

I don’t know if I could point to a single reason, so I’ll name a few reasons the format appeals to us.

First, we kinda wanted to do an homage to old school novels, and a lot of popular early novels were epistolary/found media. These kind of gave readers a sense of heightened realism, like, oh, here we are rooting through someone’s trash and getting a sense of all the tea in their life. Some novelists (epistolary or not) also used the Dostoevsky Dash and blanked out names and places, whether that was to cover their butts for creating something inconsistent with reality, or doing a “no celebrities were harmed” version of prose. We have a particularly exciting moment coming in our next match of chapters where the Dostoevsky Dash drops…

Second, we knew we wanted to devote a lot of time to each of the five main characters, and writing letters gave us an easy way to track each character’s part in the story and develop their unique voices. It’s fun figuring out what each character’s correspondence style is like.

Third, it felt like a way to nod at the clever and organic way YR canon uses social media as part of its storytelling.

Finally, it’s a pretty practical way for @heliza24 and I to collaborate on our writing. Every time we plot out a run of chapters, we have a massive spreadsheet organizing to the letters, diary entries, newspapers, etc that will make up the storytelling. Filling out the spreadsheet becomes a game of sorts! Also, sometimes when I summarize a letter, I go out of my way to do it in a ridiculous manner (the August letters are particularly good choices for a summary full of performative pomposity) and it’s honestly fun to just make @heliza24 laugh, especially when our plot twists and turns get dramatic.

Found media has always been one of my favorite things! I adore it.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.

For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.

The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.

So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

this is a complicated answer, but i'd like to say that first and foremost, Calcifer is very proud of his work. whether that be killing or his work as a historian, he's very proud of what he does. he's a bit of a showoff when he's particularly proud of himself- say he kills a particularly bad person, like a serial killer/rap1st/etc that either wasn't caught or got off scott free . . . he would make it known that this person was dead by dressing up his murder. this would be a death that wouldn't get burned to a crisp, he would make art out of it and make something beautiful out of it. he would show his pride by dressing it up. he wouldn't get caught, of course - he has no fingerprints to trace the murder back to him and even if he left evidence of any kind, there's simply no record of him unless we're talking about a young man that "died" in the 1600's and that's awfully hard to explain.

when it comes to his work as a historian, it's much more similar, though hardly as gruesome. if he finds a particular piece of history that he's proud of or he's discovered something that he thinks is fascinating, he would decorate it and show it off. Calcifer feeds off compliments and positive ( or negative ) review. the more attention he gets, the happier he is. the more proud he is. Calcifer works hard at what he does and he likes to show it off. can't really blame him for that now can we ??

note: Calcifer doesn't put people on a high enough pedestal to feel prideful about them UNLESS he's shaped them to follow after him. if he takes a sort of apprentice, that is the only way he will feel pride towards another in a way that really matters. he might be proud of you for not smoking that last cigarette, but he's not going to show you off for it. make sense ?? Calcifer is very particular about the "someones" he puts pride into. it has to be something big or he won't put in that much effort. i'm sorry, that's just the way he is. if you make him dinner, he'll be proud of you, but he's not going to go to social media and boast about it. these things have to be particular and they have to be big. then and only then will he show you off to the world.

Nothing will dispell the "the curtains were just blue" myth faster than writing something yourself, because the amount of pretentious symbolism i am putting in my silly little fanfics is ridiculous. I mean SO much with these words, literally every single one of them. This fic has twenty five typos and zero correct uses of punctuation but if there's curtains you bet your ass I put thought into what colour they were.

Randomly thinkin about Chilchuck today, and how he tries sooooo hard to self sabotage

like for example, other half foots on the island think that he's a greedy asshole who only cares about money, and he does nothing to try to disprove that

but then there's this omake at the end of book 9 that shows that people treat half foots fucking TERRIBLY and chilchuck started a union to protect them

and then in the bicorn chapter, he doesn't want Marcille to keep digging into his personal business so he tells her he CHEATED ON HIS WIFE

but he just COMPLETELY fuckin lied about that and made himself sound so much worse than he is bc he's afraid of being vulnerable with people and would rather everyone believes he's a shitty person so he can keep them at a distance

and the thing that's memed so often is that he refuses to help with fighting most of the time because it's not part of his contract

but if you take this lore into account (not gonna add those particular images to this post simply bc I've used them in so many posts already LMAO) along with this tidbit from the world guide:

then it's like. yeah he has to keep his weight low so if he gets killed or severely injured and has to be healed, that could be really dangerous for him. and even if he was healed at that point he'd end up being a burden to the party after that point, he would be too dangerously thin/sickly to be able to help.

Like, Chilchuck has so many things about him that APPEAR to be character flaws, but every single one of them has a very reasonable explanation. He just leans into the mischaracterization bc he's emotionally withholding and can handle people thinking he's an asshole more than he can handle opening up to anyone. he's such a well thought out and interesting character
