Reading TGCF: Chapter 33

For those who don't know, I am reading TGCF for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

If you have not read it, there will be spoilers! Consider this a warning.

I was really exhausted yesterday because it has been A Time. We had Charlie's appointment, but I have also been super busy with work and union things.

Charlie update: For those who didn't know, my sweet boy Charles had some super concerning bloodwork a month ago and his specialist appointment to get him checked out was Tuesday.

His appointment was 4 hours long they did a full blood panel, physical exam, and an ultrasound. Thankfully he doesn't appear to have any masses. They found a little heart murmur (they were not so concerned about it right now) and his liver did look darker than normal. They suspected he has a liver infection (our boy is on anti-biotics). In two weeks we will follow up with another blood test and see how his levels are.

But for now better than I thought to be honest. I was so scared it was cancer or fully liver failure.

Okay, but could he not give the rain hat to someone else, like Mu Qing or Feng Xin and have them do it while he took care of his own prayers? p74

ooof. And then in Xianle, they're just imprisoning refugees, because they make the land look less aesthetic. So gross. p75

Fuck. Again I am struggling with the themes ins this book. All these people blaming their issues on the refugees, poor, and non-citizens of xianle is so awful. I hate this rhetoric so much. It's too real right now. p78

Ah, my question from earlier was answered. The hat requires a shit-ton of spiritual power (probably why only he can really do it) p81

Expelling the refugees is just horrible. p83

Xie Lian is just running himself ragged with his day divided into thirds. Do heavenly officials have to sleep? p85

This is so dark. I literally had to put the book down and walk away for a second. The entire scene with the kid being ill and his father climbing the wall really fucked me up. :( p87

This chapter actually has me a little unwell.

This was incredible hard to read. I can't help but drawing parallels to the the state of the world right now and it is really messing with me. Especially with the social othering and dehumanizing people based on their status as refugee or "other"; I can't.

For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

They bond :)

TGCF art from 2021 which were very experimental and very much something out of my comfort zone but am still so satisfied with

(gonna ramble more under the cut 👉 )

My main inspiration for these were definitely classic storybook illustration styles and the watercolor-like illustrations included inside the tgcf books which depict hualian's daily slice of life routines as seen below

I wanted to capture that feeling of warmth i got from reading but i also went with the storybook look because their relationship (and by extension broad strokes of the entire plot) really did feel like something out of actual myth or legend; i'm chinese indonesian and was raised surrounded by chinese culture + values so tgcf felt VERY familiar to me, it threw me back to my childhood reading or listening to tales about chinese deities, i'd say the storybook image definitely came into my mind pretty quickly bc of this

I find this style somewhat hard to replicate now but if i could or have the time to, i really want to continue the 'companion pieces to chapter titles ' concept i did with the last 2 pieces (which are of the same chapter title but i was just indecisive 😭😭), i even had 3 more planned based on my favorite titles before burning out back then

So you know how there’s The Frowning Critters? The opposite of The Smiling Critters? Well now that there’s The Nightmare Critters, what if we had the opposite of that?

Snow Fleece

Certainly the most outgoing of the group, Snow loves to sing songs and hang out with his friends! He enjoys making flower crowns as well!

Yummy Gummy

Yummy is rather good at sports, but she’d much rather cheer you on! She’s a real team player and will offer you all the support she can!

Tabby Batty

You can trust this silly bat with anything! He’s great at keeping secrets and would never judge you for anything. He’s a great listener too! You could even say he’s all ears!

Gogo Gator

A real go getter (yes her name is a pun), Gogo is up for anything! Her energy is unmatched and she’s always the first one up in the morning! She would never just sit around and wait for things to happen, she’d make them happen!

Gabri

A sweet and gentle bird, Gabri is always in a bright mood. They love to dance, and do so gracefully! They love the sunshine, the bright green grass, and feeling the wind in their feathers

Simone Vapor

Quite the nervous one! Simone always loves to lend a helping claw, but never wants to be in the spot light! She’s quite shy, but she’s still friendly. Although she’s a dragon, she isn’t greedy or fierce. She’s more about safety!

Stu Little

If you thought Simone was shy, Stu’s even more so! She’s super quiet, and likes to keep things nice and tidy! It takes a lot of work to get her to even say a word! But don’t worry, just because she isn’t speaking, doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy your company!

Marco Mako

Last, but certainly not least, we got Marco! He’s a real friendly shark, who loves eating healthy! He’s a vegetarian, so no meat for this guy! He loves all sorts of veggies, but his favorite is broccoli! (For some reason) And don’t worry, he doesn’t bite ;)
