Nicolas Caldwell
Trying @cawthorntales bachelor challenge to woo Mr Bloom
Download from SFS (only cc are his lashes. He was made with the Waterdrop eyes so I'm not sure if his eye colour is custom but it should be whatever swatch looks grey and blue). For him to have all his outfits you'll need: Werewolves, Cats & Dogs, Romantic Garden and Cottage Living.
Forget that I often make self assured and confident sims because Nicolas is anything but...
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Oh shoot I should have figured that would be a question. Umm, I'm Nicolas, which I mean you probably know from the application. Ah, I'm what's called a military brat. My parents are both in the military and did a whole bunch of postings as I was growing up so we were never in one place for very long. It's made me kind of shy I guess, I'm not great at relating to others. I have one sister, Teresa, she's a decade younger than me but we get along.
And why have you applied?
Funny story. Well not really. Ah my younger sister Teresa actually applied for me. I consider myself pansexual but I've only ever been romantically attracted to guys. That was not a fun conversation with my father. But he's fine abut it now. What was I saying? Oh yeah, Teresa. She keeps telling me I need a boyfriend so I don't turn in to a hermit, I've had to shut down several fake dating profiles she's made on my behalf. I told her I'm shy, and the idea of being on camera all day scares me, and having to compete... But I don't want to let her down, she was so excited my application got accepted.
Tell us about some of your likes and dislikes
I'm a bit animal mad, it's what made me become vegetarian. As much as I like being outside hiking, gardening, bird watching... I cannot stand fishing. I just feel so bad for the poor fish, like what a terrible way to die. And even if you throw them back they're probably freaking out thinking they were abducted, and they are definitely still injured from the hook! Sorry... I don't mean to lecture I just... I like animals okay. You can fish all you like just don't expect me to join.
I'm a little bit musical. I mean I don't perform for anyone but myself and occasionally Teresa. Mum tried to get me in to violin but it was so boring. Guitar is my instrument. Well, musical instrument not... you know. Ah... I did a programming course after high school that was not for me, and I'm rather useless at fixing or making things. Except baking! I do like baking. I've definitely got a sweet tooth.
What are you dreading?
People. You'd probably think with having to introduce myself new places so many times it wouldn't worry me but it does. I'm pretty quiet so people can think I'm being a snob when really I just have no idea what to say. Is there a gender neutral or masculine term for resting bitch face? And I don't know if I can take my guitar. Playing it is what calms me down. Well that and cloudgazing. So hopefully the weather is good and I can get outside between challenges. I've really no idea how this show works. Also worried about losing my contacts but that's an everyday worry.
What are you looking forward to?
I mean.. Teresa showed me the picture of Daisy and yeah he's good looking. Those eyes, I just completely missed what she told me right after because I was dreaming. She also said he wasn't actually organizing it so I really really hope he can understand this all being a surprise for me because it's one for him to. And she said he has farm animals! I want to meet them. Hopefully they'll like me and that can convince him I'm a keeper.
Do you have a message for Mr Bloom?
Oh, ah, sure! Umm... hey there good looking. Give me a chance to show you I'm certified boyfriend material. Well not certified because I've never had a boyfriend. *BLEEP* I didn't mean to say that, I don't want the other contestants knowing. Can I start the message again?
EDIT: Turns out he should have green hair... the save file is his brunette look but on the show he will look more like...

Sonic Boom: Those Who're Made Fools
As April Fools day is upon them, Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends must content with a series of pranks that go a little farther than they would like.
Below is a oneshot Sonic Boom Fanfiction that I started and finished today, April fools day 2024. I have not time to edit because my scope for this got out of hand, so I'll share it now as to release it within Apr 1st my time. I'll release an edited version later this week. _________________________
While Sonic the Hedgehog would usually be sleeping in, the cool breeze blowing through his hut and swaying the hammock he lay on beckoned him awake. He declined this request to wake up at a normal time and curled up further. However his body began to shiver and his mind was dragged into enough consciousness to realize that the cool breeze was actually a freezing wind. His eyes shot open, seeing a light flurry of snowflakes blowing over him, already building up drifts in his beachside hut.
“What the f-, flakes? Snow??” said Sonic as he wobbled while standing up.
The warm light of sunrise was peering through his windows and the island outside looked as tropical as it should. The culprit, Sonic deduced, was likely the large yellow painted machine that looked like a window air-conditioner if it were on an industrial scale.
A letter lifted off of the pile of mail he kept strewn on the ground and into his face. It was the invitation to Amy’s birthday event this evening. Thus, it was also April Fools day.
“Either Tails actually got his sleep schedule in check just to get me first, or I need to have a chat with him about staying up all night again,” said Sonic aloud, ears turning to listen for any unseen listener.
The wind then picked up, and the snow flurries began to sting as they struck him. In fact it was more of a semi-frozen rain now. Everything in Sonic’s hut was quickly being coated with bits of water and ice which then turned into a slick layer over everything. He grumbled and shivered, then dashed to his door to find the off switch. The machine however blocked the entire doorway, and there were no controls on the side facing Sonic.
“Aw what the heck?!” Sonic tried to push the machine out of his door but found his feet slipping on the frozen and wet floor. “TAILS! I don’t wanna break your new toy here, but I will!”
Sonic heard no response aside from the torrent of wind and freezing rain, which grew strong enough to send him slipping onto his face and sliding away to the far wall. He grumbled, stood up, and placed his feet on the wall. With one strong kick he spin-dashed into the machine, sending pieces of it flying as it fell out of his doorframe.
“Brrr, jeez,” said Sonic as he stood up and looked around, seeing no sign of Tails, “don’t tell me he already ran off to prepare another prank. This one was already a bit much… Guess I’ll have to teach him a lesson on restraint…”
With resolve filling his eyes, Sonic the Hedgehog took off running across the beach in a blur. The machine was left behind on his front porch, a problem for later perhaps.
A potential problem for Sonic immediately descended from a hidden perch in the trees of the jungle to the machine. They fluttered with insectoid wings and had a green colour to match the jungle canopy. They landed atop Tails’ machine, and yanked a kunai dagger out of the machine's control panel before returning heading for their next target.
____________
The drone of power tools echoed throughout Tails’ workshop as usual while he assembled a new gadget. Progress was going good by his insane standards of pacing, so he took a step back to look over the device. Lifting the goggles off of his eyes, which bore a giddiness bright enough to almost hide his dark eyebags. This projector he was modifying would surely be perfect for setting the mood at Amy’s event this evening. All he needed to do now was program a remote for ease of use, something he was learning other cared about when using technology, and then-
A swinging sound from his mail chute on the door pulled Tails’ attention away. Could it be Sonic’s counter attack already? He chuckled to himself, picturing Sonic popping out of a pile of harmless snow with a dumbfounded look on his face. Upon approach however he saw that it was clearly from Amy. It bore fancy calligraphy for the address and her custom rose wax seal which was slightly cracked, likely from its journey.
“Oh, she must be excited,” muttered Tails to himself before biting the letter to open it with his teeth.
Tails immediately regretted his lazy choice of letter opening when a pink cloud of a gas blasted from the letter and filled the workshop, and his mouth. The taste of floral air freshener made him gag and spit. Then the overwhelming smell filled his nose. It should smell pleasant, but the flower scent was so overwhelming and suffocating that Tails had to cover his snout. He then scrambled for the nearest window.
“What The FLYING FFff-!” Tails gritted his teeth and compressed his fit into a soft growl.
One by one Tails swung each window open. Then he opened the garage door of the hangar portion of the workshop. That didn’t dilute the air freshener smell fast enough so he turned on every industrial fan he could. Soon he resorted to his emergency eye and face wash station, shoving a pile of boxes that surrounded it out of the way. The torrent of water on his face face made his eyes stop stinging so bad and got most of the taste out of his mouth. But his nose was still completely overwhelmed.
“I can’t work like this!! Why should I work like this?!” said Tails as he shook the water off of his head.
The ring of his doorbell drew Tails’ irritated red eyes to the door. Opening it revealed a fast food bag of which he couldn’t smell at all sitting on his welcomemat. This was definitely another prank, and the fact that he was hungry now that he thought about him annoyed him more. So he leaned forward and kicked the bag away before turning to slam his door shut.
“Hey woah!” said Sonic, jumped down from atop the workshop roof, “what’s up? Not hungry?”
Tails glared at Sonic, and glanced at the bucket of ice and snow in Sonic grasp.
“Okay to be fair you really-” Sonic coughed and waved a hand in front of his muzzle, “wow bud isn’t that a bit much air freshener? It’s kinda distracting.”
“Yes! And I guess Amy thinks that’s funny, since evidently you had a much more lazy prank in mind,” said Tails.
“Amy?” said Sonic, “She usually doesn’t take time for anything more elaborate than what you can buy at the joke store.”
“Yeah, except when she asks for help with her party tonight.” Tails walked to his work table and plugged his nose with tissue paper before pushing the projector project aside. “Let’s see how she likes my help now, heheheh…”
“Tails you’re getting a bit maniacal,” said Sonic, “seriously, don’t go overboard again. It just smells a bit too nice in here.”
“You don’t mess with someone's sense of smell and get off easy,” said Tails.
“Okay, well, can I ask your opinion on something first?” said Sonic
Tails turned to face Sonic, only to get a bit of half melted snow in his face.
“I’ll ask for your help fixing my house later!” said Sonic before dropping the bucket and dashing away.
Tails grumbled, wiped the snow off his face, then grabbed any errant material he had lying around to build his revenge on Amy. After a moment or two he started thinking about what Sonic had said.
“...Fix his house? What?”
In his state of sensory overload and anger, Tails failed to notice a figure move from the jungle canopy outside a nearby window. It stood tall, then began leaping between trees toward the village.
____________
The hum of Amy Rose’s voice trailed through her house as she happily prepared for the rest of the day. Her daily twenty-four step quill-styling routine was now ready, she was dressed, and every surface of the room was covered in decorations and snacks to be assorted. Sure she always had a bit of anxiety about the fact her birthday falls on the first of April, the day of fools fooling other fools. But that worry was now barely present after living the last couple years dealing with attacks from Dr. Eggman at any random time.
Working out a block of time in her schedule to deal with an inevitable attack or crisis meant Amy had all the time she needed to still have a fun birthday. She smiled to herself while looking over a stack of colourful papers she had printed, it was hard to suppress her enthusiasm at having her friends over tonight. Truly the real power of one's birthday was the leverage it put everyone else to try your favorite forms of entertainment.
“Alright, let’s get this next part right,” said Amy to herself as she organized the papers, character sheets. “This is my one chance this year to convince the other that this’ll be fun. And this time I’m right.”
Amy’s smile faltered slightly as she remembered her failure to convince Sonic and the others that playing out her favorite musicals was fun. Really she should’ve known that’d be too much. This time though, a simple role playing game, she can get them to agree to do this more often.
A knock on her door made Amy jump and gasp with a smile. She waved her hands a bit to lower her giddiness, taking a deep breath. Then she skipped over to the door.
Greeting her outside was a basket with a bow on it, sitting just past her welcomemat. Amy’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly recognized Knuckles’ handwriting. “Hope you like these colourful rocks!” It wasn’t a romantic gesture from Sonic, but still nice. With a sigh and a soft smile she stepped forward to see what varieties of polished stones Knuckles had-
Her boot fell through her welcomemat, and Amy stumbled into the hole the had been hidden just under it. It was a short fall, but she landed on her face and splattered some liquid all over herself. It took a few seconds of sitting still to process what just happened.
“What the F-Ow…” said Amy, as she stood up, eyes stinging from the oily fluid coating her. “What is this stuff?”
The smell, and once her vision cleared, the black colouration showed Amy that this was actually just oil. Used oil, most likely motor oil, from a motor, filled with gunk, that was now in her quills… and her whole dress.
“Are, You, SERIOUS?!” shouted Amy, “isn’t this a bit much!?”
Amy sighed, but tried not to let this ruin her mood. It was meant as harmless fun, even if it was ruining her morning. It wasn't usual for Knuckles to be that deceptive though, even though signs pointed to him being involved with how good he is at digging. Perhaps Tails put him up to this, considering the use of engine oil. But why would he? This is usually a thing between him and Sonic.
After a moment to glower, Amy decided to climb out of the small hole. The dirty motor oil made this tricky however, as she fell back in several times. By the time she heard the swishing of Tails’ tails mid flight, and a nefarious chuckle, she had worked through her patience.
“TAILS! Get down here this instant!!”
Amy heard a gasp, then the patter of footsteps. Tails leaned over the hole and looked at her with a strange squint. She in turn gave him the most stern look she could.
“This is really obnoxious, especially for you!” said Amy.
“Yeah, like you don’t know a thing about obnoxious pranks,” said Tails, glancing away from Amy’s eye contact.
“There’s Motor Oil In My Quills Tails!!” said Amy.
Tails leaned out of Amy’s sight, she heard him put something down on her deck, before he leaned back over the hole. “Who put a hole full over motor oil here anyway?”
“...It wasn’t you?”
“No! This is lazy, and just mean!” said Tails as she gestured energetically, “I’d at least be way more creative for something this mean! Or just less mean if I don’t have time to be creative.”
“Okay, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to insult your… prowess with pranking methods,” said Amy, “Please get me out of here.”
“Oh yeah, sure.”
With ease, Tails lifted Amy out of the hole and dropped her on the deck before landing himself. She pretended not to notice him immediately kicking a really haphazardly thrown together looking device out of sight.
“Uh, Amy,” said Tails as he rubbed the back of his head, not noticing the oil stain he was leaving there from his glove, “do you happen to know anything about the perfume filling my workshop.”
“What? What happened?” said Amy.
Tails made eye contact with Amy, a look of anger quickly fading to regret. “I-I’m sorry, someone else must’ve put that perfume bomb in my mailbox then.”
“...Probably Eggman, right?”
“He… He’s not good at all at being that sneaky though…” Tails squinted as he looked at the hole, “And this does look like it was dug by claws, natural or those glove things people can get. And I guess Knuckles can be sneaky sometimes?”
“Okay but how would he do this without your help?” said Amy.
“...I dunno, could’ve gone to a mechanic,” said Tails, “But this is something he’d try to do to Sonic for April fools, not you.”
Just overhead, as Amy & Tails started talking about their problems, a sneaky individual leapt and flew away from the top of a palm tree.
_________________
It was much easier for Knuckles to find specific rocks when they were in the ground. The polished stones he’d put in a gift basket for Amy evaded him in a way most minerals couldn’t. He’d been forced into retracing his steps to the best of his ability, now out on the jungle trails just outside of the Village. However all he could find was litter and Sticks’ traps.
“Oh come one gift basket, where’d you go?!” said Knuckles aloud, “I need you to be a good friend to Amy!”
The gift basket didn’t answer, only the rustling leaves did. Of course Knuckles could quickly gather some neat looking plants, but it wouldn’t have the same meaning to it. He slapped himself on the head trying to remember where he could’ve left the basket. After the week he spent picking out the perfect colourful stones it sickened him to just lose that gift.
Searching the edges of the trail closely, Knuckles came across a tree with a nook inside it. The colours inside excited him for a moment, until he realized that it was only foraged fruit and not his basket of rocks. His stomach grumbled now, and the smell and look of the berries there enticed him. Then when he noticed a doodle carved in the bark next to the nook in the tree, depicting a simple Sticks the Badger giving a thumbs up, he smiled.
“Oh! Awesome! I really gotta thank Sticks for these snack stocks she leaves out.” said Knuckles
As Knuckles stepped close enough to reach into the nook of this tree, something snagged on his leg. He instinctively kicked, and felt something wrap tight around his leg and pull him upward. He gave a yell as the complex and well hidden snare trap hung him upside down from the top of the tree, several feet out of reach of the collection of berries.
“Ah dang! I set off one of Sticks’ traps again…” said Knuckles as he folded his arms. “Wait, why was there a trap there, when there was a friendly and welcoming sign?! That’s like, the opposite of making sense!”
Knuckles grumbled to himself. If it took Sticks too long to find him then he’d have less time to find his gift basket. Then even less time to beat Sonic & Tails in the April Fools prank war.
“Wait, I think I know what’s going on…. Sticks is trying to make me an April Fool!” said Knuckles, slapping his face in shock. “Oh man I’ve never had to deal with a prank battle involving her before.”
“Knuckles! What’re you doing up there!” shouted the voice of Amy Rose.
“Amy?!” Knuckles looked down to see Amy with several paper towels in her hands and a bag over her shoulder. “Thank goodness you’re here! Sticks got me in a prank-snare thing! Who knows what she’ll do next!”
Amy’s eyes widened, then squinted. “Knuckles, Stick doesn’t do April Fools day!”
“Oh wait, really?”
“No, she stays in her burrow all day, remember?”
Knuckles thought about that. He did begin to recall Sticks’ distaste for the idea of April Fools day the first time it was ‘explained’ to her. That was one crappy day, Sonic only barely survived.
“Oh yeah!” Knuckles leaned up and grabbed the robe tied to his legs, then ripped it apart with his raw strength. He landed on his feet next to Amy and sighed in relief. “I was worried I’d have to stay up there all day. Good thing this rope doesn’t actually belong to Sticks.”
“Hey, I had a question for you,” said Amy.
“Oh yeah, I was gonna ask you about the oily smell but I can wait,” said Knuckles.
“...Yeah you didn’t dig that pit in front of my house then.”
“A pit?”
“Yeah, sorry, I thought you tried and succeeded to prank me.”
“Oh wow! If I were you I’dve like, punched me in the snoz,” said Knuckles as he looked over just how messed up Amy’s quills were, “man, I’m glad you’re so reasonable Amy, it’s nice knowing you have faith in the rest of us.”
“Heheh, yeah,” said Amy, tucking the bag over her shoulder behind herself. The spice-laden cupcakes inside will have to wait before burning someone's mouth up.
Seeing where Amy and Knuckles’ conversation was going, the hidden figure in the canopy fluttered away. Only one more member left to find.
_____________
No amount of fresh air from outside could alleviate the tension in Sticks the Badger’s nerves. She’d just managed to will herself out the door of her burrow, knowing that the number of traps and practical alarms she’d placed around would warn of any intrusion. None of the others were going to mess with her this year, she knew that, they assured her and she trusted them. She desperately wanted to just trust them.
“C’mon, you promised Amy you’d go to her party…” Sticks muttered, glaring down at her boots.
The sound of a bell jingle made her ear twitch and her body stand even more tense than before. She glanced over, seeing no sign of anyone there. That upset her more than anything she could’ve seen prowling toward her burrow. Her teeth clenched together hard enough to become sore again.
Sticks looked in the direction of the other makeshift alarms, and more broadly the edges of the jungle near her burrow. To her relief and wraith, someone was here and it wasn’t only her. That camouflaged figure staying perfectly still in the trees evidently didn’t realize to what extent Sticks had memorized the area around her living space.
Being sure to not look to close in the direction of the figure, Sticks started walking into the jungle. The peripheral view she had gave her enough information about the size and shape of this stalking figure that she was confident about what to listen for. After only a few steps she heard the sound of it sticking to a new tree, a light thud very subtle but distinct from the tropical woodpeckers.
“Heh, see, It’s not any of your friends,” Sticks muttered, trying then to steady her breath.
Based on the pace of when the figure hopped between trees, Stick knew exactly which snare to pass under. With a hand on her boomerang she listened as she walked. In short order, the figure fell into the trap as Sticks heard the snare suddenly tighten above her. She turned on her heel and threw the boomerang, letting herself snarl just a bit.
The sight of a scarf and large insectoid wings is all Sticks could see of the figure through a cloud of blue glitter as they were pulled away into the air. Sticks heard a snap from her rope, and saw the figure dodge the boomerang and duck behind a tree. Then the boomerang came back and knocked the figure down, triggering a chain reaction among Sticks’ traps.
Nets and leaves went flying throughout the air as several trees sprung loose from the ropes of the traps. Sticks dived behind a safe tree and tried to watch the figure, but they managed to escape her sight and each trap they triggered. Eventually she heard the drone of their large wings as they disappeared into the jungle. The only sign they left behind was a spot of blue glitter on every tree they’d touched.
“Sticks!” shouted Knuckles, “What was all that?! Are you alright”
“I’ve only heard legends, but if my guess is right… some sort of Ninja,” said Sticks.
Knuckles gasped, “a Ninja?! AWESOME!”
“Wait you’ve heard of ‘em?” said Sticks, “The rest of you hardly ever know what I’m talking about.”
“Well when you watch enough tv you learn what a Ninja is,” said Knuckles.
“TV? Darn, I should’ve known…” said Sticks as she walked out to find her boomerang, “wait, why’re you out here?”
“Oh yeah, Amy wanted me to find you. We have a problem.”

“Hoh Hoh Hoh!” laughed Dr. Eggman as he sat in his room of many monitors. On the largest screen the unfortunate situations of Sonic and his friends played out on loop. His assistants, Orbot and Cubot, waited patiently for him to get his fill of laughs in. As did the green Preying Mantis Ninja standing with their arms behind their back.
“Look at his face as he slips on his face!” said Dr Eggman, hitting his control panel and laughing, “he’s helpless against a bit of wind and freezing rain! I gotta remember that!”
“Uh boss,” said Orbot, “now that we’ve played these recordings on loop 20 times, perhaps we ought to worry about what Sonic and the others are going to do to retaliate?”
“Oh yeah, what did you build for Sonic to blow up today boss?” said Cubot.
“I didn’t build anything for today,” said Dr. Eggman.
“But eeh… that means they’re gonna break something else,” said Cubot.
“No you nincomputer!” Dr. Eggman stood up from his fancy swiveling chair, “they don’t even know who’s responsible for the appropriation of their pranks! It’s genius you see!”
“But sir, who else would antagonize them like that other than you?” said Orbat.
“Why this mischievous freelancer of course!” said Dr. Eggman, putting one of his hand on the Mantis’ shoulder and giving them a friendly shake.
“I did in fact sabotage their joy today,” said The Mantis, standing stiff and waiting for Dr. Eggman to release them.
“Yes you did! And you got four out five of them! That's four stars out of five in my book! I knew I wouldn’t regret hiring you out of that catalog.”
“Oh yeah, you were like ‘I better not regret this!’” said Cubot, taking up an Eggman-like pose.
Dr. Eggman glared at Cubot, then coughed and turned to look down at the Mantis. “Your contract said I’ve got your services for the whole day, yes?”
“I am standing here for that reason, yes,” said the Mantis.
“Good, now let’s show them who’s really responsible for their misfortune! I’ll even let you partake in gloating with me!” said Dr. Eggman.
“I do not have ‘gloat’ in my skillset. Thus I would perform poorly at that task,” said the Mantis.
“...I can teach you a bit about it on the way.”
___________________
“Alright team, if we’re going to have fun during my birthday, and Sonic & Tails are gonna have a fair ‘battle of annoyance,’ we gotta deal with that person who's trying to ruin our day!” said Amy Rose to the rest of Team Sonic. They had assembled at the Teams agreed DPZ, De-Prankified Zone, the Meh Burger dining lot.
“Who, other than Eggman, would go to these lengths anyway?” said Tails, “that’s what’s really bothering me. Have we done anything to someone recently?”
“Well there’s people who get ‘parasocially angry’,” said Sonic with finger quotes. “Could be literally anyone who doesn’t vibe with our brand of swagger and has no life of their own.”
“Ninja’s are notoriously without a life,” said Knuckles.
“And good at blending in…” said Sticks, turning and eyeing a family sitting at a nearby table with suspicion.
“That I have seen,” said Sonic.
“Oh yeah, did you manage to hire-” started Amy, before the attention-demanding voice of Dr. Eggman rudely interrupted her.
“MUAHAHAHAH!” bellowed Dr. Eggman from his flying eggmobile. His threatening presence caused the other patrons of meh burger to steadily flee, after only gathering their food, napkins, and food packets. “Have you had misfortune today Sonic?”
“Are you going to have some misfortune?” said Sonic, leaning forward but staying seated.
“Not today, Hedgehog! For you see, I have the upper hand.”
Some patrons scooted by the teams table as Tails said “Have you actually built a badnik we haven’t seen before, or are you just trying to hype up Mega again?”
“Grr, I don’t use that one that often!” said Dr. Eggman
“Uh, yeah, you kinda do,” said Sonic.
“It’s frankly embarrassing how often you pull out the same badniks on us,” said Amy, “the people of this village can’t even be bothered to put energy into fleeing from you anymore, that’s how stale you’ve gotten.”
“Yeah, and you use the same robots all the time!” said Knuckles.
“Yeah, okay, so maybe I can’t churn out new super badniks at an insane rate, but I’ve got standards for my health! I’m not gonna crunch my schedule if you lot won’t even respect what I build!”
Sonic turned and stared at Tails for a moment, who took a bit to notice. “What?”
Sonic titled his head and raised an eyebrow.
“What??”
“Does Egghead actually have a better sense of self care than you these days?” said Sonic.
Tails folded his arms and looked away from Sonic.
“If you all could be bothered to pay attention for more than a second!” shouted Dr. Eggman, “You might notice-”
The crash of a soda cup hitting the ground drew everyone’s attention to Sticks. She’d turned round and snarled as she tightly gripped the wrist of the Mantis Ninja, who appeared to have been attempting to tie a small wire to Sticks’ leg.
“Well, colour me impressed,” said Dr. Eggman with a widening grin.
Sonic recognized the smile and immediately dashed toward Dr. Eggman. Then Eggman pressed a button, and something tightened on Sonic’s leg. He fell onto his face then saw that a thin wire tied to his leg led to a small round black badnik with the shape of a spider. Three more wires protruding from this badnik were tied to Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, who were all sent to the floor by the momentum of Sonic’s dash.
“Ow FUCK!” shouted Tails.
“Tails what the F-! You can’t say that!” said Sonic.
“Actually,” said Knuckles as he pushed the dining table off of himself, “I’m with Tails, this fucking hurts.”
“I’ve had enough of Eggman’s shit today too,” said Amy.
“Goddammit, could you guys at least try to keep the Team PG?” said Sonic.
“It’s no use anyway,” Said Sticks, still grippin the Mantis, “It’s not like we’re getting fucking renewed anytime soon.”
“...What?” said the Mantis, with the second emotion to appear on their face being sheer bafflement.
Sticks responded by punching the Mantis in the face. The force allowed them to pull out of her grasp and dart away, diving behind the counter to the despair of the service worker there. Still Sticks gave chase, throwing her boomerang.
The Mantis responded with a flying kunai that struck Sticks’ boomerang and changed its trajectory. Truly Ninja’s are as dangerous as Sticks worried, as she found it hard to follow the boomerangs flight path. She only saw it just before it was about to strike her in the face.
Then a second kunai hit the boomerang, deflecting it away from Sticks. Everyone looked over to see a floating hand. Actually, it was attached to a well blended figure, whose colours changed from that of the background to purple.
“Chaotix agency, Espio,” said Espio the Chameleon.
“Oh he’s good,” said Amy, “how much money did Vector want?”
“Not too much,” said Sonic as he stood up and struggled against the wires of the spider badnik, “they said if we were actually dealing with another Ninja we’d get a discount.”
“That… doesn’t make sense,” said Tails.
“The honor of testing my skills against another trained in these arts,” said Espio as he stepped closer to the Mantis, “is worth a quarter of my boss’ revenue.”
The Mantis nodded, “so be it.”
“What is even happening anymore?” said Dr. Eggman, “this was supposed to be when you all cower at the genius of my Tripping-bot in conjunction with my competent hiring judgment!”
“Well Egghead, you’re not the only one who gets the ‘spies and assassins’ catalog,” said Sonic.
“That’s it,” said Sticks, “two Ninja’s is too much for me to worry about! I’ve got something more important to be doing!”
Sticks the Badger proceeded to leave… without her friends even. Sonic and the others exchanged a glance and shrug.
“Alright, no more delaying! Ninja, attack!” shouted Dr. Eggman.
“Go get em Espio!” said Sonic.
The two Ninja’s locked eyes, raised their kunai, and charged at each other. Just before an intense clash of blades, both Espio and the Mantis dodged toward different directions, hiding behind different tables.
Meanwhile Knuckles managed to get a footing against tension of the wire from the Spider Badnik. Seeing this, Dr. Eggman attacked team Sonic with the base missiles and laser on his eggmobile.
Two epic battles played out over the next few minutes. One where Team Sonic steadily overcame the problem of being tied together. At Amy’s suggestion, Knuckles took the lead of which direction they would all move, and even threw the other within range of Eggman. Via taunting Tails tricked eggman into blasting the cord tying him to the others, and started flying interference.
Eventually Tails lured Dr. Eggman close enough to the ground for Sonic, Amy, and Knuckles to time a jump together and all land on Dr Eggman's vehicle. Just in time too, as he had finally grabbed ahold of Tails and was about to throw hands. From there all four of the team beat up Dr. Eggman and his eggmobile until he finally admitted defeat, which took an impressive amount of blows to make him do.
All the while the two Ninja’s engaged in the most intense battle of their lives up till now. The Mantis used their flight advantage to duck behind elevated positions and look for Espio. However Espio knew this and compensated with his camouflage and speed. From the perspective of everyone else and each other however, they both remained completely out of sight. Some customers even started returning to the meh burger, unaware of the intense battle going on between tables and booths.
“...Are either of them still here?” asked Amy.
“ I literally can’t tell,” said Sonic.
“Well one of those ninja knives just appeared in my shoe, and I’m sure it wasn’t there before,” said Knuckles.
“They must be so fast!” said Tails.
“And sneaky,” said Sonic.
…
“This is so boring,” said Sonic as he sat down in a chair.
“Yep,”
“I’m afraid so,”
“Maybe I could build a Ninja tracker?” said Tails.
“If this fight takes that long, I think we’re better off-” Sonic leaned back in his chair as he talked, and to everyone's surprise tripped the Mantis Ninja who stumbled out into the open.
The Mantis immediately opened their wings to take flight, but were stopped as Espio charge out of nowhere horn first into their torso. The two Ninjas tumbled to the ground with the sounds of struggle. Once everyone managed to realize what was happening Espio had his kunai at the Mantis’ neck.
“Damn,” said the Mantis.
“Yep,” said Espio.
The two stood up and dusted themselves off. Espio quickly went to retrieve his scattered ninja weapons while the Mantis adjusted their scarf.
“Apologies Doctorate Eggman,” said the Mantis, “I was bested in the duel. Here is an adjusted invoice. Call my number if you have questions.”
“Right…” said Dr. Eggman.
Sonic and the others went over to Espio to congratulate him. Though the chameleon kept a stoic pose, Amy at least could tell he seemed to appreciate the praise.
“For the discount,” said Epsio and he pulled a pocket register out and started typing into it, “please write down all the thoughts you had about my performance for my boss to see.”
“Yeah I’ll tell vector you did a good job,” said Sonic.
“How will you be paying?”
“I have a card,” said Amy.
“But it’s your birthday!” said Knuckles.
“Yeah, we can cover it, right Sonic?” said Tails.
“Uh… yeah, I’ll just… hafta to buy a smaller gift for Amy,” said Sonic.
“D’aw,” Amy smiled warmly at Sonic, that comment fully recovered her mood from earlier, despite the battle damage to her dress and quills. “Don’t worry Sonic, having more money for later is a perfect birthday gift.”
“Oh, yeah, sure thing Ames,” said Sonic.
______________
While his mood was a bit soured, Dr Eggman took some pleasure in knowing he at least inconvenienced Sonic and his friends today. That was worth something. Now he just needed to figure out how best to word that to Orbot and Cubot as to make it sound like he didn’t lose.
That train of thought was halted when Dr. Eggman got within view of his lair. Smoke poured out of several portions of the structures, and loose wires threw sparks all over the place. Several of his defensive badniks were flying and walking circles around the base in full alert, but it was clear they had no idea where the culprit of this mess was. Dr. Eggman grumbled and flew in closer to evaluate the damage.
“No who had time to do this?!” Eggman said to the badniks.
From behind a rock, Orbot and Cubot peeked out and pointed to the top of the base, Orbot saying “she did…”
“Wha-” Dr. Eggman was cut off by Sticks the Badger landing on his Eggmobile and driving an obsidian shortsword into its control panel. He screamed in genuine terror as they crashed to the ground.
Dr. Eggman felt himself tumbling until he lay flat on his back, then Stick jumped onto his chest and bared her teeth, putting a hand on his collar.
“I have WAY too much to worry about, without dealing with this damned ‘Fools Holiday!’”
“Wait, I-” muttered Dr. Eggman.
“Shut up!”
Dr. Eggman shut up.
“When I hafta to worry just that much more, it actually hurts! And I’m not willing to spare you that pain!” Sticks took a few heavy breaths and made sure Eggman was looking her in the eyes. “Now, are you EVER, going to make me hafta to worry about an ‘April Fools’ again?!”
“Well… when you ask so nicely…”
Stick growled like a wild badger.
“No no of course not! Jeez! I’ll leave you alone if you leave me alone!” said Dr. Eggman.
Sticks’ posture immediately softened and she released Dr. Eggman's collar. She let out a sigh and said “thanks,” before stepping off of Eggman’s chest and lying on the ground.
“Uh… don't mention it,” said Dr. Eggman.
“Yeah, of course… Sorry I hafta be so mean…”
“I'm going… to go inside, and hide.”
Sticks gave him a thumbs up and continued to just lie on the ground in front of his base's door.

How did you make the custom Apollo animations?
- one very tired fool who thought it would be fun to attempt similar model shenanigans with Athena
Keep in mind three things,
one- I have never touched 3d animation before and this has just been me beating the shit out of this program until it does what I want, so this might not be the "right" or easiest way to do anything
two- I am using 3DS max for this so this might not apply to blender or any other program.
three- I'm going to assume you know how to load models and animations, at least directly from the game files
Also this is a very slapdash tutorial so you can send any other questions in, knowing I won't hit everything at all.
The easiest thing for you to do, amateur to amateur, is pick an animation that makes a good base. This can just be the neutral pose, a talking pose, whatever. I don't like dealing with talking and blinking so I usually make sure I have those loaded beforehand.
Before you worry about animation, spend time posing and adjusting things that aren't going to be moving, and just generally solidifying the pose. It's much more annoying to do this after you start animating. In my... very non-professional opinion.
Once you have that down, look at the bottom of the screen.
It's a lot, but you're going to be staring at it if you want to animate. What I do immediately is click on that little icon directly below the frame slider, at the very left edge. After that, click "Editor" and then "Curve editor". Then just enlarge it a bit, and...
boom, animation curve timeline. Let's get an actual animation to show what this actually represents...
I'm selecting bone15 here, which corresponds to his left upper eyelid. The red peaks in the curve timeline represent him blinking. So basically, this is a linear representation of all of the moving parts in the animation over time... very fun.
If you grab onto a node and move it around, you can see the effect it has, so this is one method of adding animation points. Another method is to move to the frame you want, and, after turning on "auto key" move the model to the pose you want.
this automatically adds animation keys when you move things around, which is better than physically editing the timeline sometimes. I do both depending on things.
I'd honestly just suggest screwing around in here with no goal first, as that's how I started. But, as for actual things...
Don't move the parts themselves, move the bones. If you must, messing with the mesh is possible (I had to do it for his jacket in the bashful emote) but it is very very janky. Try to stick to rotating things instead of moving them when messing with joints. "," and "." advance 1 frame back and 1 frame forwards respectively.
As for how I edit them out, you probably see my great green screen up there. It's just a flat plane turned green. I just screen record the animation and use websites online to crop out the green, turn the video into a gif, and resize it to my liking. I... should probably figure out how to directly get a transparent video or gif out of the program, but oh well, this works.

Fanart for Doves and Arrows
So there’s this amazing Tf2 Bushmedicine fic called Doves and Arrows, by @anonymous-astronaut, and I decided to make a thing for it. Astro at one point put the title of his fic into an ai generator, which produced this image:
I got permission to turn it into a wall hanging, and have finished this after almost 3 weeks of work (front and back):
If anyone wants to see my explanation for choices I made or in progress photos I took, I’ll put them under the cut since I tend to ramble. Please go read Doves and arrows, it is fantastic.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23886154/chapters/57423127
So, I started out by trying to make sense of the original ai image. I threw it into an art program and made 2 copies of it. One sticking closely to the original image, just cleaned up. The other changing some of the weirder shapes into something recognizable. I especially focused on including actual arrows into the second image.
I decided to use the second image, and put it into a site called Bracelet Book, in order to get a pattern to use. I did my best to make the pattern as symmetrical as I could on the first pass, but the dove was very difficult to work with.
People looking closely may see that the final project looks a little different from the pattern. Especially the dove’s eyes and the fletching on the arrows. That’s because I would sometimes make on the fly decisions to alter parts of the pattern, since it’s pretty flexible like that. Most edits were done to make parts look more even or less cluttered (except for 2 specific changes). Here is the edited pattern I had by the end of all this. The edits are a little messy since most were drawn using my phone. :P
Once I had a pattern, I started working on making it. The kind of method I used is used for what’s called Alpha bracelet patterns. If anyone wants to know more, I recommend looking up tutorials by the youtuber Masha Knots, as she was the one I learned from. Here’s some progress photos, as you can see it’s a pretty messy looking process.
I changed the eyes and and arrow fletching colors for a specific reason actually. I wanted the eyes to be blue since the dove represents the BLU Medic, Josef. The arrows fletching then became red for the RED Sniper, Mick. I just felt like the plainer pattern wasn’t as clearly a Tf2 thing.
Once I finished off the pattern, I tied the strings I had been tying my knots on into little tassels. I sewed a black outline around the beak, since it didn’t stand out against the body as well as I hoped. I also decided to make a cover for the back. This is because, for anyone who doesn’t know, the back of an alpha pattern pretty much always looks like a disaster. It takes a lot of work to hide the mess, so I like to make fabric covers for it. I did neaten up the mess where I could before sewing on the cover though.
When I made the fabric backing, I originally just planned something simple and plain, but the only fabric I had was blue, which didn’t match the look of the piece. So I got the idea to paint it to lean into the red and blue theme, complete with the characters class symbols. I cut out the fabric, hand hemmed it as best I could, and painted it with some acrylic paints I had.
Then it was just a matter of sewing it on and adding a string for the wall hanging to hang from! This is the biggest project of this sort I have ever made, nearly twice the size of the second largest wall hanging I’ve done. It’s about 5 1/2 inches tall (not counting tassels), and 5 1/4 inches wide. If anyone is interested in making anything like this, I have some advice. One, always get way more string than you think you need. I got two bundles of each kind of thread I purchased, since I got some specifically to color match as best I could. By the end I had to make another run to Michaels for more green since what I had wasn’t enough. Also, try to keep your knots neat and evenly sized. Some parts of the pattern aren’t clear on the final project because the knots are hard to see.
If you actually read through this whole thing, I hope you have a good day!
#general post#Tf2#bushmedicine#doves and arrows#this took me so long to make you have no Idea#It doesn't help that I am also trying to get my drivers license#so I literally finished this final test for an online driving course right before making this post#I'm very tired but very satisfied

Hey. Totally not returning a favor or anything this is definitely for no reason at all yep mhm. Do you want to tell me about photo editing.
Photo editing means a LOT to me because most people don’t realize how much really goes into it. Call me crazy, but I WILL be in my local mall staring at every advertisement poster I come across figuring out the editing techniques used. Are the highlights too high? What about the whites? Have the shadows been raised to provide more detail to the darker parts of the image? Does the subject pop out from the background the way they’re supposed to? Could a masking layer help this in any way? Unfortunately, this is not a words thing, this is a visual thing.
You did not ask for photo editing advice, but I will serve it to you anyway.
A lot of these terms and advices are all referenced from my experiences with Adobe Lightroom, since that is the main program I use.
Highlights + Whites– The most basic things I first learned when it came to photo editing was to always lower the whites and highlights in a photo. By lowering the brightest points in the photo, you get a more professional feel, as all the colors are in closer relation to eachother. And in fact! In movies, there are no parts of any shot that are complete, pure white. They are always dimmed. They are always a dimmer off-white, because that’s how you achieve that cinematic feel to a movie. The same goes for photos! This was just a good rule of thumb for a while me, until recently when I figured out that it really does add a level of professionalism to the entire photo.
Shadows– RAISE THEM! Reasonably, of course. But we want all the information we can get in a photo. It’s really shocking how BIG of a difference it starts making when you have more information in the darker parts of an image, how much it really brings the photo together.
Blacks– For more professional, contrasty photos, I usually leave this alone. But if you want to achieve a more film-like look, raise them slightly! Just keep in mind that the higher you raise them, the more flat your image may end up looking (If you play around with it, you’ll see what I’m getting at with that).
Masking– One of my favorite tools so far that I’ve discovered. Again, this mostly pertains for Adobe Lightroom. I use this for a large percentage of my photos. One thing that’s super super important is making sure your subjects stand out from their background. I don’t own a light reflector, so one of the ways I do this is by creating a subject mask (often for portraits), and in that mask, turning the subject’s shadows up, lighting them properly. Of course, an actual light reflector would absolutely work better for lighting the subject rather than a digitally processed way, but if you’re lucky with lighting outdoors, you shouldn’t be able to tell that it’s done in post. In some really strong cases, I’ll create a background mask to turn the exposure down on what is NOT the subject, so we can assure that that is still what our main focus is.
Saturation + vibrancy– I rarely ever touch these settings. They tend to adjust all the colors in an image, when my main point of editing is to bring out certain colors, and not other. Hell YES I want my subject’s shirt brought out against the blues of the sky. I also want some of the sky brought out! But not entirely. These settings will bring out the color of the shirt plus the blues of the sky, plus the reds in the subject’s skin that make them look like they really need some medical attention. I never really touch these settings. They do too much for what I want .
Curves– I’ve heard this described as “the most powerful tool” you can use in photo editing, but it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to get the hang of how to use curves properly. What I learned is that the curves chart is always divided into three sections: the shadows, midtones, and highlights. And there are four charts, one for gamma (general brightness), red/greens, green/purples, and blue/yellows. Curves are FANTASTIC for when there is an overarching single color in a photo. Is your photo too blue because you were shooting in the morning shadows? Adjust the curves chart (probably around the center, or the midtones area for general color-correction coverage) towards the yellows. Because of color theory, they obviously counteract eachother. If it’s mostly the shadows that look a little too blue, you can adjust the curves chart in the shadows portion to bring the shadows back to matching the rest of the image. I did not master the curves charts by fiddling around with them myself, I had to be shown how to use them, but they sure have benefited me for the better
Are you a beginner without the money for fancy programs like Lightroom? I got you. Lightroom Mobile IS INFACT FREE! But that’s not what I started off with. I did a lot of my editing on mobile for the longest time. I used Snapseed, a free mobile app for photo editing. The organization is… questionable. It really takes a lot of time to learn how to get around the app, and learn what all the options do. But like I said, organization of things within that app? Questionable. But even then I got compliments from professional photographers on my photos taken and edited with nothing but my phone. Crazy to me 2 years later, but. Anyways! Snapseed does give you more options for specific editing styles than Lightroom does, so there’s that!
Thank you again for the ask, photo editing is something that brings me so much joy every time I have the opportunity to do it <3

i have to shoot my shot and ask - HOW on earth do you make your gifs so crisp. they're so clean its literally out of this world!!!!!! when your gifs are on my dash i almost always know its you just by the QUALITY of the gif. help a girl out!!!
Hii! Thank you!! <3 I'm happy with the way my giffing process now goes but it's taken years and a few different fandoms and stumbling upon good tutorials which is why i decided to make one of my own too.
I still love figuring out new things to try and hopefully you can get some new tips to your process from me too. Under the cut is a long af post about gif making, focusing on some basic stuff and sharpening/coloring tips.
________________________
WAY TOO LONG INTRO
Before i get to the photoshop part, the base stuff is super important: You can't turn a very bad video into great gifs since there's only so much photoshop can do BUT you can turn a good video into great gifs. So, obviously the original video quality matters a lot.
I religiously stand by the correct tumblr size dimensions (see example, the numbers mean the width. Height doesn't really matter). However in 3 column sets i’ll sacrifice that one pixel and would make them all 177px. The empty space between gifs in 2 column sets is 4px, in 3 column sets it's 4px + 4px.
Since tumblr can only properly handle 540 gif pixels in the same row, sets with two wide gifs side by side can be laggy to scroll by. So for example, 268px gif will not be as sharp as 540px gif (if you click on it to see it bigger), since it legit has only half of the pixels, but if you plan to post 2 gifs in the same row, the 268px will look better on the dash in the gif set since it’s correctly sized for the best dash result.
I download videos when i can (dl is always better than screen recording), so that's youtube, instagram/twitter etc. Streaming sites/broadcasts i have to screen record and i use OBS to do it. It's the best i've tried for hq recording. I record with 60fps and use display capture. OBS is a heavy program, as is photoshop, so a good enough computer is also super important imo. I used to make gifs with a laptop of 4gb ram/128gb emmc and lost my mind after all the crashing and spent 1k€ on a new one. Basically, have as much performance as you can afford, and editing experience will be much much more pleasant. Of course gifs can be done with an average computer too, it'll just likely be slower and clumsier and you need more patience 😫
Also, i've gotten rid of the urge to be the first to post a gif set when new content drops. I'm not the fastest, i always do every coloring from the scratch. I save to drafts to see how it looks like on mobile, i go back to ps to correct the things that don't look right (too dark/bright, too green/yellow/red, too slow/fast), i make the changes, then save to drafts again and then post. I'd rather post a set i'm happy with than to post quickly knowing i could've made it look better with just a bit more time. (It'd bother me and i'd go back and re-color for my own peace of mind 😅) And i just wanna say it's totally fine when people make gifs of the same stuff!! The more the merrier, no need to think only the first to gif something somehow now has the rights to that moment. I just never get the best result if i try to hurry, so i’ve stopped trying to get my sets out asap. I’ll post when i’ll post.
________________________
SHARPENING
All these words and i haven't even gotten to the point yet 🫣 But fine tuning the details won't work if they don't have a proper base at first. Which!!! Finally brings us to your question:
I'm not sure if the order really matters but the main steps i do in this order: once the layers have been converted to video timeline and video timeline is converted into a smart object -> smart sharpen -> crop -> resize -> coloring
I like to sharpen things first, to me it makes sense to do it before resizing because after resizing you've already lost some pixels, so feels better to sharpen when you still have all the original pixels.
All the above steps (sharpening, cropping, resizing) will affect how the gif looks, so i do the coloring as the very last thing so i can better see how the end result will look.
To me sharpening and coloring go hand in hand, and you use both of them to get the best result. Sharpening obviously does what it says but good coloring will help to make the gif look cleaner and smoother too.
Finally, examples!! The key to a sharp result in my process is 2 sharpening layers. The main layer and the second layer.
Enjoy looking at judgy max f i giffed last year and chose to use as an example here. The source video quality was 1080px and i screen recorded with OBS.
I use photoshop CC2019 so cannot guarantee that these will work the same way in other ps versions. As always, it's about fuckin around and findin out 🙏🏻
__________________
1. Example with resizing done, but no sharpening or coloring (blurry and ungood)
2. Example with resizing and main sharpening layer (already much better)
3. Example with second sharpening layer included (more depth, dark spots are darker, almost too strong of an effect but coloring will fix that)
4. Example with all of the above + coloring (the final result)
5. The final result as a gif
And how did we get that result?
Main sharpening layer settings (yes, it’s in finnish but i think the options are in the same place in every language):
Because the sharpening is quite heavy, I double click on this thingy (red circle) in the layers panel to lower the opacity to 50-70%
The middle layer is gaussian blur, which i’ve set to 0,2.
So basically i intentionally oversharpen the gif and use the opacity function and blur to soften the effect. Dumb or smart, who knows not me, but it’s working for me so i’m rolling with it.
The top layer is the second sharpening layer. A godsend trick i’ve learned along the way: (the difference between the example photos 2 and 3 above)
(I've created an action, so i just gotta push one button and it'll run thru these sharpening settings, ie. i don't have to manually click thru these every time, saves crazy amount of time)
Wasn't sure at which point i'll mention this so i'm just putting it here: when saving the gif for web, i almost always use adaptive and diffusion.
________________________
COLORING
I’m not gonna go thru every coloring thing in my process since this is already so long hsdkfjdkjgkd but i’ll give some info on what i usually do and some tips i've found helpful.
My style is quite natural and i prefer colder tones. I hateeeee overly green/yellow/red skintones that are caused by bad lighting so I always try to correct that. The below stuff is more or less what i did to color that example gif too. (Everything is down to preference, these are just the way i like to color)
My most commonly used coloring layers:
Curves. Utilize the eye dropper tools, pick white eye dropper and click on a white spot on the gif (not pure white tho since it won’t do anything) and it will turn that spot to 100% white and correct the other colors at the same time. Black eye dropper will turn a dark spot you picked to 100% black. It can be super effective, just try a spot, undo, try another spot, undo, until you find what looks good. If you like the result but it’s too strong, lower the layer opacity. And of course you can just simply drag the curve up and get brightness that way. There are times when the eye droppers won't work nicely but it's always worth a try.
Levels. Works similarly to curves, they are basically the more efficient brightness/contrast combo.
Color balance. No gif of mine has been made in the last 3 years without dragging the blue in the midtones to the right. I also often drag the green to magnetas side.
B&W gradient map. I set the blending mode to soft light and lower the layer opacity. Gives the gif a bit more depth and pop to the dark/light parts.
If the dark parts in your gif are too dark, for example details around eyes look messy but you don't want to lower the contrast, then try adding light colored gradient map (light yellow-white or light blue-white etc) and set it to soft light and play with opacity. It will give light and brightness to the gif without making things blinding and not losing much contrast.
Photo filter. I’m almost always going for cold blue and 10-20 setting. (Orange filters can give a nice effect too, if you want to bring some warmness to the gif.)
Vibrance. Always adding at least a little bit, helps colors to pop and makes skintones look nicer.
Selective coloring. Just drag them sliders to left and right to see what works, that’s really the best advice i can give. If you want reds to pop, go to red and play around. If you think the white spots are a bit blinding, go to white and then slide the bottom one (black) to the right. If you want some more contrast, go to neutral and slide the bottom one (black) to the right. Same with black (black).
Also, i don't like to do too much with one layer. I tend to do different colors with different selective coloring layers, so if needed i can lower the opacity and it will only affect that one color. Also it's handy to duplicate layers if you really want a certain color to pop, one layer often isn't enough in that case so duplicate it and if it's too strong then play around with opacity.
(Left image below). If you want to correct overly yellow/green skintones, go to yellow and you can try these settings. Then lower the layer opacity to see what looks good.
(Right image). If you struggle getting rid of very red tones, you can use hue/saturation layer, go to red and just drag the middle slider to the left. (This is also a good tip with POC, when you think their skintone is overly orange/red but you are afraid of white washing. This setting will usually correct the orange and red tone without taking the dark/black color away.)

THE END
Wheew this is what happens when you give me an opprtunity to talk about giffing 😅 I hope it was easy to follow, feel free to ask if i was unclear about something!! And hopefully you got to learn something new.
Also these are obviously just my way of doing things, not the Only Correct way, do whatever you like and enjoy and don’t worry too much if other people do things differently. Most important thing is to have fun creating 🫡
#slowestlap's lowkey gif tutorial of sorts#answered#one thing about me is that if i start talking about photoshop#i simply do not know how to stop hdjdjdjdk#ok to reblog btw if you found this helpful#(thank ya again for the nice words anon <3)

Read on to find out about my plans for a fashion-inspired summer road trip, where I will explore new stores in each of the states I plan on visiting this summer. One of the three MTN DEW® bottles I picked up at Family Dollar had an Alabama label, which is my neighboring state, however, I don’t know much about it. So I picked up the MTN DEW® Green DEW® that, by the way, packs a refreshing citrus kick that's extra amazing when it’s ice cold. I decided to do my research on local Big & Tall shops in the Alabama area and then, boom, in less than 30 seconds a few big and tall specialty stores popped up. So you know I had to make that the first stop on my list of places to go when I get to Alabama, right after the beach… I heard the water is blue and I wanna see it with my own two eyes. Next, off to my hometown NEW YORK, NEW YORK, NEW YORK the concrete jungle where dreams are made of! There’s so much to see and do in New York - how do you just pick one………you don't. I’m gonna find a few places to stop on the road trip journey to New York. But first, remember after the gas station to head to a local Family Dollar and continue that search to find all 50 state labels. I’m a planner, so I bought an old school map just to plan out this road trip. Now off the last stop on the three city road trip…...Florida. My love for the sunshine state goes deep, really deep. Day 3
It was a cloudy and rather dreary start to my day. Mollie is doing what she does best besides eating and taking naps. She has discovered a new crawly that I think is a stink bug and is trying to herd it across the floor. I hope she doesn’t eat it.
Susie and the kids have gone into town for a bit so that leaves me with my own thoughts and my computer. This would be a great time to enjoy some tea and continue my search for understanding what worldviews might be here. What I originally thought was more religious, more closely resemble an open society.
Australia's values are the values of an open society. It believes that freedom is best advanced when it nurtures an environment where ideas can flourish, where contending philosophies have to make their case in the marketplace of ideas and where those who govern are held accountable to the governed.
Australia's national interests are frequently asserted but rarely defined. At their core, they are timeless: to advance security and prosperity and to contribute to the shaping and running of international institutions which reinforce the rule of law and international norms of behavior.
Imperial trade and domestic protection gave way to global markets and a more open economy. And around the same time, Australia’s strategic policy also underwent profound changes with a stronger emphasis on defense self-reliance and a greater confidence in our ability to defend Australia but within an alliance framework.
In the worldview of Australia’s religious practices, the percentages of different religions have a lot do have a lot to do with how they relate and interact to each other. Roman Catholic 20%, Protestant 18.1% (Anglican 9.8%, Uniting Church 2.6%, Presbyterian and Reformed 1.6%, Baptist 1.4%, Pentecostal 1%, another Protestant 1.7%), other Christian 3.5%, Muslim 3.2%, Hindu 2.7%, Buddhist 2.4%, Orthodox 2.3% (Eastern Orthodox 2.1%, Oriental Orthodox 0.2%), other 2.1%, none 38.4%, unspecified 7.3% (https://www.discoverwalks.com).(2021 est.)
The textbook shows a variety of religious disciplines, and each corresponds with a country and a way of life. Some of the listed religions date back from 4000 years to 1400 years, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam just to name a few. “Communication between Cultures”, 9th edition. 2019).
Religious traditions provide structure, discipline, and social participation in a community.” Friedman uses the image of an olive tree and its deep stable roots in the title of his book (“The Lexus and the Olive Tree”) to underscore the powerful and enduring quality of religion to a collection of people. “Religion as a Worldview”. (Communications between Cultures, 9th edition, 2019).
Economic overview seems to be what I thought but had to look it up anyway. Australia’s economy appears to be highly developed, diversified, regionally and globally integrated economy with strong mining, (https://www.discoverwalks.com).
Manufacturing and service sectors; Australia is a net exporter driven by commodities to East Asian trade partners; “Future Made in Australia” program focuses on green energy investments. (https://www.cia.gov). In all it really is not that much different than in the U.S. or other free countries.
Susie came home from town and Mollie presented the crawly which turns out to be a scarab beetle, non-venomous but would have tasted nasty if she had eaten it.

it’s been a while. i have very roughly done sprite edits (and some general notes)
jade strider (daveways)
if you’ve been here a while, there’s no need for me to make much of any notes atp. the only thing i can mention is that i used a dave sprite because my mannerisms were a lot more similar to canon dave and it felt a lot more fitting.
i didn’t draw my symbol since i lowkey don’t fully remember. i feel like it was a cassette tape though.
john harley (plus dave lalonde [roseways] from what i remember)
we started the session when we were older. maybe about 15? so that’s why we may look a little older.
it’s hard to tell, but i’m wearing shorts! i wore these a lot since the island was a bit warm but i could never really let go of sweaters (especially one dave made me) so i tended to wear them and just rolled my sleeves up. i also liked bracelets and jewelry! and had my ears pierced. i also got a lip piercing done by roxy strider (dirkways) but i think that was a lot further in the future (maybe even earth c?)
i remember dave a bit more post grimdark, at least in terms of appearance. he got a lot of scars on his arms afterwords. his hair was also practically white afterwards, but since there’s a lack of color, i can’t really show that lol
actually now that i think about it, it would be a smart idea for me to explain how i looked in these cause of me not coloring them. i had black hair (that was very poorly cut. i cut it myself most of the time. my dad could of helped but i was determined to get it done myself), green eyes, and light tan skin. i also had a bunch of freckles. my symbol was a plant
dave, on the other hand, had dark blond hair (pretty much white post-grimdark), purple eyes, and mid tan skin. his symbol might have been a pair of needles? maybe? :P
meulin makara (kurlozways)
appearance explanation! curly, poofy black hair, grey skin obvi but it was a bit darker than “standard” (for lack of better term), and pre-death my eyes had started to turn purple. post that, my entire eyes were just full white. cause yk. dead.
i had a scar on the back of my right hand. it was covered by my glove, but it was in between my thumb and pointer finger. there was also this big one on my stomach but idk what it was from.
not pictured due to the lack of color, but i did have face paint. it was similar to a cat. kind of like a tiger? the canon drawing in my pinned is the best example of it.
i might have gotten a tattoo from porrim? it’s not clear but i have a faint memory of getting a tattoo at some point, and she knew about that kind of stuff, so it makes sense to me. ^.3.^
OH and i had a nose piercing. that’s what that dot by my nose is for lol.
dirk lalonde (roxyways)
this is a really new one so i can’t say much. i mostly just remember myself.
appearance: light blond hair and pink eyes. i can’t really figure out what’s up with skin tone stuff. again, this is pretty new. i have no fucking idea what symbol i had.
i did programming stuff. i tinkered with robotics a bit, but it wasn’t my main deal. it was more so roxy’s.
i made this tl’s version of AR who…i’m pretty sure loathed me a bit. i attempted to make him a body at some point, but that was a bust. i considered contacting rox about it but didn’t want to bother her.
in terms of the outfit i have here? i had this off the shoulder sweater that i really really liked. i used to not wear a tank under. of course, i accidentally shrunk it in the wash, so then i did to cover my stomach. also i’m not sure when and where i got that eyebrow piercing. it’s just there until i get an idea.
(if anyone happens to see this post btw please don’t take the sprites w/out permission. ik that won’t stop anyone but it is very much appreciated if you don’t 🥲👍)

More info under the cut. I'll try to make future updates (if any) short or with cuts to avoid clogging up your dashboard.
The point of this project is to make a programming block (usually six hours, since that's usually the max you can get on a standard vhs tape on EP) containing videos from YouTube and Newgrounds, currently looking at Eddsworld, Tomska, Smosh, AVGN, and maybe Filthy Frank videos, all of this including adult swim esque bumps in between.
The last project had no video editing, purely relying on recording footage that others have recorded, as if I was recording the source footage to a tape myself (albeit a little out of order chronologically at times). The Real Will Wood tape was also easy to edit, as I just stretched the movie from 16:9 to 4:3, and then added the fbi warning and some commercials for the movie at the start, and threw in some bonus scenes at the end. (I also edited the credits sequence, once the lights are turned off during the green screen bit on the left, it's nearly impossible to make anything out on a CRT, so I scaled the credits up on the right to take up the whole screen, making them much more readable. Makes literally no real difference except to me.)
This project is going to be me basically making my own programming block. Picking music for the bumps, adding short introductions to videos (or just rambling about whatever) for the text, and editing videos that may have been presented in 16:9 in 4:3, either by stretching the video or by cropping it down to just the most important parts.
Why am I doing this? For two reasons.
1) It's YouTube on a VHS tape, how fucking cool is that?
2) I have a feeling that the Xbox 360 internet service is going to die soon. With the XBL marketplace being shut down last month, I feel I have very little time before I won't be able to watch YouTube on the Xbox anymore, and I'll have to upgrade to a more modern console or system of watching youtube on my TV. I would like to avoid that hassle as much as possible, and think rather than having another device to put my information into in order to watch YouTube with ads, I can simply just port as much as I can to DVD or VHS (or even just download to my computer) and watch that way.
Is it a very stupid reason? Yes. Is that going to stop me? No. Why? Please refer to Reason 1 above.
The working title of the project is Digital Guillotine. I will have that in the tags of any potential future posts in order to let people block me rambling about this project from their dash. The name Digital Guillotine comes from the idea of blocking every celebrity and big account on social media, in order to disconnect from drama, and live a more peaceful life. I didn't know about this when I came up with the name, I just thought the name sounded badass and googled it to make sure I wasn't stealing someone elses name. It turns out that the name was quite fitting.
Anyways, that's about all I wanted to say. If I know you irl, you'll probably end up seeing a bunch of these tapes scattered around my living quarters. I'll also make some update posts if anything notable happens, or if I just feel like rambling.
I've decided that since I can no longer find any archived adult swim tapes, I am going to start making vhs tapes with old youtube videos that I like on them, mostly flash cartoons and shit.

I love your art so much! Do you have any of your brushes for sale, or any tutorials, especially on colour?
Hi!! Thank you so much! 💕
Honestly, my go-to brushes are all procreate brushes with slight adjustments (like stabilization, etc.) my personal preference is brushes that kind of mimic graphite pencils. The best thing you can do is find a brush that suits you & get very comfortable using it! Specific brushes won’t necessarily improve your work, it’s all about practice! (But yes, a nice brush does help!)
I do have a video on my favourite brushes:
I’ve never really made any tutorials, but I’m happy to try and relay what I know and what I’ve learned so far!
Colours are a big part of illustration! I could probably ramble on for hours, honestly—in any case, it’s always helpful to know fundamentals of colour theory. Once you learn and apply it, it becomes intuitive! I’m gonna stick to RGB colours because CMYK is it’s own thing (printing!)
There’s a handful of basic terms like hue (pure colours), shade (adding black to a colour), tint (adding white to a colour), tone (adding gray to a colour) and also opacity (transparency) that help us understand and define the complexity of colours.
My colour choices are more often than not a gut feeling—but that does come from practice! There’s loads of colour palettes available online like this one, but if you wanna come up with your own, there’s some neat ways to do that using a colour wheel! Colours can broken down into primary, secondary and tertiary colours. We can also categorize them as warm or cold. With this we can make colour schemes!
Some basic schemes!
Complimentary: two colours, opposites on the colour wheel
Analogous: three colours side-by-side
Triadic: three colours that form a triangle, evenly spaced
Monochromatic: using one colour (using different shades)
(Bonus) Monochromatic with accent colour : using one colour as a foundation and having an accent colour (similar to analogous, but one colour is used for a majority of the piece while the accent colour is used sparingly)
It’s also important to keep in mind that values (a colour’s range from dark to light) will look different on different colours. Sometimes, you’ll put two colours together and think “huh, something about this feels off” and it turns out, the colours just happen to be very close in value and melt together. Switching your piece to grayscale just to check on your values every so often can help with contrast and muddiness! A light tone on a darker tone will look brighter than it really is. Colours can also influence each other and trick your eyes.
Environment is also a big part of choosing your colours for a piece. Determining what the setting is important! A sunset will make a drawing warmer, while a scene set in the night will usually have colder tones. Using only local colours (true colours, like green grass or blue sky) vs non-local colours (atmospheric perspective, accent colors that give depth, etc) can help enhance your drawing too. Don't be afraid of artistic interpretation!
Also, there’s always the option to use gradient maps (at least on procreate & photoshop but I’m sure it’s available in csp and other programs) where you draw in grayscale & apply a gradient map. The gradient map basically applies a color to every value (e.g all the shadows become blue and the highlights become orange) it can look really nice (and help out if colours just aren’t working that day yk)
Another thing, when I’m drawing (and this is specific to me!) I tend to start with pretty desaturated colours. Once my illustration is done, I’ll duplicate & merge my layers to do colour edits. Most programs give you the option to play with curves or colour balance—menus that allow you to play around with the hue of the shadows, midtones and highlights. I tend to make my shadows more cyan-blue, my midtones a little warmer and my highlights warmer as well. Of course, this depends on the mood of the piece, whether it’s warm or cold, lighter or darker, etc!
You can always make adjustment layers on top of your work; a low opacity yellow, magenta or blue (or anything your heart desires) overlay to tie all the colours together.
I hope this helps a bit!! Happy to answer more questions to the best of my knowledge :^)

"Damn it Solomon, be gentle! I just got those re-gilded the other day."
"It's not my fault you never do this on your own. What are you going to do when the Exchange Students get here? Let it get out of control? I'm staying with the Angels in the Purgatory Hall, I'm not going to have the time to do this for you until the program's over."
Mc let out a groan as they leaned away from the horn file in Solomon's hand. "You know I always fall asleep in the middle of grooming. It's a hassle, y'know?" The ram-horned demon sighed, leaning into the other's offhand that cradled their finished horn. Their wings laid slumped against the tile floor. The fuzz that coated the back of them were brushed to a silky soft texture. "How do you manage to get all of those loose scales out of your tail on your own then?" The green tipped plates in question lay tied up neatly in a silk pouch on the marble countertop of the sink. "Those things sell for a fortune, how could I not? The paralyzing properties in their natural poison practically markets itself to witches or anyone who makes any sort of strong potions. If I really wanted to, I could probably sell them for a million Grimm each!" "The last time you tried that Mc, Luke found out and made you apologize for overcharging people. Don't you think that your reputation at RAL is poor enough?" Mc rolled their eyes as Solomon finished filing down their remaining horn, pulling away and getting up from the floor. "You're the only one here who cares about that sorta thing, Sol." The aforementioned male simply rolled his eyes. "Do you want me to take care of, y'know..." The sorcerer gestured towards his own hips and neck. "No, it's alright, I took care of it yesterday. You just worry about packing tonight, okay? I'm going to bed, thanks for helping me out." Careful to avoid the serrated ridges of their fellow demon's horn, they gently tussled his white locks on their way out of the bathroom.
A rush of cold air creeped up their spine as the door clicked closed behind them. The temperature was one selected by Solomon, since it was one of the only ways to keep them awake when they had guests over. It would take several more centuries for all of those present to forget about the event in which Mc had curled around Simeon when they were in the middle of baking, almost starting a fire whilst they had kept the Royal Butler caged in their arms. The memory made the demon shiver more than the cold air of the hallway. A simple chime sounded from their D.D.D. that momentarily distracted them from the sour thought. A notification from Solomon's Devilgram lit up the screen, showing off his handiwork on his own horns that he had done before Mc's. They were almost distracted enough by it to run into their door. As their hand reached to open it, they stopped and simply stared at the ornate brass handle.
The demon stood there for a minute, staring at it like it would burn their hand if they closed their palm around it, before turning on their heel and going to a different room down the hall. The gentle sounds of running water welcomed them as they entered, as well as the faint pause screen music of a popular two player game. Pushing a large flat pillow in the shape of a familiar creature against the glass, Mc nestled down on top facing towards the tank. Sensing their presence, a pair of eyes peered out from the dark waters and drew themselves closer. The creature blinked its golden eyes with excitement as it pulled its aquamarine body up to the glass. Its black forked tongue flicked in and out of its mouth as if it were saying a greeting. "Hello, again." Mc murmured, pressing a palm against the glass before drifting off.
They awoke the next day to a violently shaking alarm clock near their head and a soft fleece blanket draped over their body.
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
Mc adjusted the tie of their uniform uncomfortably, slouching against the table of the Student Council room. The young demon prince sat at the head, restraining his excitement, whilst Simeon prepared the portal. The Human World Exchange students were going to be summoned first, with the Celestial Realm angels following not too far behind. Solomon had already packed his bags and moved into the Purgatory Hall prior to the Student Council Meeting, and Mc could admit it'd be lonely at HOL without him. Sure, they would have two of three humans to look after to keep them busy, but living with strangers is a lot lonelier than living with someone you had considered a close friend for centuries. Vaguely, it reminded Mc of the time before the demonic sorcerer had come crash-landing into the Devildom in a spot not too far from the original crater from a few years before. "Now, is everyone ready?"
Simeon's voice brought the room's attention to the now finished portal, remaining dormant and waiting. "As ready as I'll ever be." "Yep!" Solomon had set down the tome he was engrossed in, while Luke's eyes glinted with an eager joy. The room gazed back to Mc, earning a muffled "mhmm" as they rested the side of their head in their palm. The position was meant to be relaxing, a nice cradle for their head as they waited for the humans to emerge from the portal. And yet, as seven bodies passed through the portal, Mc's hands began to vigorously massage their temples. The pile of humans were very still, but still breathing thankfully.
"Luke?" The demon prince in question looked over to Mc, who had begun to strain their jaw to prevent their teeth from gnashing. "You had me select 16 profiles of humans, of which you were going to choose two. Like what you did with the angels. Why are there seven of them?" "Well, these ones all have a familial bond! I thought it would, y'know..." "I tried to talk him into less, but seven was the lowest I could get. He originally wanted to send all sixteen to the House of Lamentation, since there is technically enough room." Simeon cut Luke off, knowing the sort of reaction Mc would have at the prince's complete statement. Both demons knew that Luke meant no harm by it, but it was hardly the time to have the humans' protector sulking. Taking a breath, Mc ran a hand through their hair. "I am fully aware of the family situation. I was the one who picked out their files remember? Ugh..."
"..."
"Agh... damn it my head..." "Hey, you're crushing me! Get off Mammon!"
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
At the bottom of the pile lay the tallest out of the group of roommates. He had awoken to the feeling of being crushed and the sound of multiple people screeching in surprise. The ginger finally managed to sit up as the others skittered off in different directions. Frantic voices sounded from around him as he gasped for air. From his position on the floor he could see his other roommates around him, some sitting on the floor as well while the rest had jumped to their feet in shock. The only one who was still unconscious was his twin, likely from how late he had been up for his evening classes the day before. "Oh, hello again, Beelzebub. Or would you prefer me call you Big Guy again?" Beel squinted in the dim lighting straight ahead, from where the voice had come. A familiar looking face stared back at him with a strained smile, propping their head up on one of their hands as they stared at the group from a table in front of them. "On a nickname basis already?" "No, those are just the ones that I told you about from a good handful of months ago. The non-cult ones that summoned me." "I see, so which one is Asmodeus?" The two of the three strangers who sat next to his mysterious acquaintance had spoke up. The brunette spoke in a very calm manner, but the white-haired male sounded much more interested. "Hold on, hold on! We haven't even properly done introductions, don't go acting all friendly just yet!" The short blonde at the head of the table interrupted, jumping up from his seat. The trio that remained looked in-between each other for a moment before finally standing and lining up beside them.
The small line of four were definitely unique types, or at least Beel felt they were. The only unifying characteristic each of them held were their uniforms, in style and form. The shortest of the group stood out a bit like a sore thumb, the pastel blue base color of his uniform starkly contrasting the dark gray the rest of them wore. The four had stood in silence momentarily, before the brunette gave the blonde a gentle nudge. "We are glad you have awoken, dear humans." The formality in his tone sounded rehearsed. "Please, allow us to welcome you to the Devildom! We have brought you here in order to unite the three realms, so please do a good job." "Luke... Ehm. What my young master means is that we have brought you here to be a part of our Exchange Program." Beel had not heard his brothers this silent before, even when sleeping, but it would be hard to not admit he was also shocked into silence. "...Is this some sort of dream?" He asked, earning a soft chuckle. "Quite the human response. This is not a dream, no."
"Wait, wait, wait! What makes ya we're participatin' in this damn program of yours?! You just abducted us outta nowhere!" At the shout of his elder roommate, a confused look crossed the strangers' faces. "Did you already forget the letters I sent out? I signed my name on them really nice too." Luke frowned, toying with the end of one of his sleeves. Looking through his memories, Beel tried to recall any specific letters speaking about any exchange programs that he may have signed. He and his brothers had received numerous letters in the past couple of months about college, ranging from scholarship opportunities to colleges begging for their presences. There was a chance that he had forgotten about signing into some sort of foreign exchange program, but it was far less likely that all of his roommates had signed themselves into the exact same program and had also neglected it. "Solomon, can you grab the signed copies from the table? I had extras made in case." The butler looking one tapped on the shoulder of the one he was speaking to, causing the white-haired male to hum and grab a few documents from the table.
Solomon handed him the stack of papers, and even in the dark lighting of the room Beel could recognize the distinct and perfectly written out handwriting of his eldest roommate. Still, he handed them to their respective owners, who only confirmed with surprise that the handwriting was their own. Other than his twin, who was still somehow sleeping through this no matter how hard he was nudged. "Now that that matter is sorted, let's get back to introductions, shall we?" Solomon waited for any further interruptions. After a good minute of silence, he took it as the queue to continue.
"Well, your friend Asmodeus may have known me under a different name, but you may refer to me as Solomon. One of the two Avatars of Sin." The male had a bit of a pompous air around him as he gave his best welcoming smile. He pat the smallest of the group on the back, signaling him to speak. "I'm Luke! Prince of the Devildom." Luke held himself in a regal manner, but the eager shake in his voice was clear to just about anyone in the room. "I am Simeon. I serve Lord Luke and keep track of things in the kingdom." Simeon bowed respectfully to the group, a look of serene grace present on his features. Eyes fell onto the last remaining member of the Devildom natives. They responded with a sigh as they stood up from their slouching position, their hands settling in their pockets.
"I am Mc, the other Avatar of Sin. I will also be your caretaker for the time period of this program. All I ask is you stay close so I may ensure that other demons do not attempt to devour you and your souls so this program can function as needed."

(fnfisnfnjesfindj I hate it when I post this in the queue instead of actually posting it. Big sucks. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this! I'll probably continue this, so check in maybe next week ish. If you'd like a better way to imagine Mc's scaled tail, I personally work with seeing it like a pangolin's spines if they had poisonous tips. I am going to sleep for the next 6 hours lol. The its back to work on my other fic. Let me know if there is any weird bits or things that need fixing! Have a good morning/day/night! <3)

Hello! As requested, here is a tutorial on how I make my gifs. I would like to preface this by saying there are many ways to make gifs, and there’s no right or wrong answer imo. This is just how I personally go about doing so!
I will be using PS CC 2017, but as long as you have the video timeline option, it shouldn’t matter too much; on any version of PS, you should be able to adapt anything I mention here! You will also need some kind of screen recording software. I’ll talk a little more about that under the cut.
To start, you need the source material you will be making the gifs from! I get mine from snahp(.)it (avoiding links so tumblr hopefully doesn’t banish this from the tags lmao) and I always opt for either 1080p or 2160p. Not all laptops will support 2160p as it’s 4K, but either works great! You just want your gifs to be the best quality possible.
Next is where the screen recording comes in. I don’t use the screencapping method to make my gifs (where you use a program to cap a clip and then load those caps into a stack in PS). This isn’t for any particular reason… it’s just how my friends, (who very kindly taught me to gif), had always done it, so it’s now how I do it too. Personally, I find the quality to be just as good as the screencapping method, and have never noticed a difference between the two.
As I have a PC, I use the software built into it for screen-recording. If you go here: theverge(.)com/2020/4/21/21222533/record-screen-pc-windows-laptop-xbox-game-bar-how-to – you can see how to use the XBOX screenrecorder to record from files you have d*wnloaded. This also works on some streaming sites, but I think it depends on what browser you use. Personally, I recommend Firefox, as that seems to bypass a lot of the blocking and ads that occur when trying to do this sort of thing.
For MAC users, I have been told handbrake works well, as it converts MKV files to MP4, which can then be used to make gifs. You only need to convert part of the file to MP4 depending on how much you want to gif, and this also bypasses the screenrecording stage, as you can edit MP4 clips on Quicktime. I am told you can split them into smaller clips by going to edit > trim and it saves the new clip!
I have also used anyvideoconverter for small clips, but I can’t say what it does to the quality of your video, or how big of a file it lets you put in! With the XBOX screenrecorder, it doesn’t matter what type of video files you get, as the recording will save to MP4 anyway.
LOADING YOUR FRAMES
Now, go ahead and record whatever clips you want to gif. Make sure you have the video timeline open, by going to window > timeline. Then, go to file > import > video frames to layers.
Next, select and open your clip from where it has saved (with the XBOX recorder, it saves in video > captures). You should see a little window pop up, where you can move the sliders back and forth to clip your recording to whichever part(s) you specifically want to gif. I recommend trying not to load a lot of frames into photoshop at once, but I would be a hypocrite to say that, since I do it a lot lmao. Just be patient if you do!
Once you have chosen the length, click okay. Never, EVER, I repeat NEVER click the button that says “limit to every __ frames”. This really ruins the flow and quality of your gif—it’s better to have shorter, but smoother gifs, I promise. And with tumblr’s new 10 MB limit, it shouldn’t be a problem anyway!
Then, your frames should open up. What we want to do is make them into a smart object, so we can edit all the layers at the same time. To do this, click the small button in the left-hand corner. ALWAYS click this first. If you don’t, it will only convert the first frame to a smart object and the gif won’t work.
Give it a second to sort itself out, then, on the right-hand side, select all your frames at once using the shift key.
Then, go to filter > convert for smart filters. This might take a minute. Don’t click anything else in case PS gets angry lmao, just leave it for a second and it’ll do its thing. The more frames you have, the longer it takes! Now we have our gif, but it needs to be cropped, sharpened and coloured!
CROPPING
You want to start by selecting the rectangular marquee tool on the left-hand side, then drag it across by clicking and highlighting the area you would like to crop your gif to, like so:
What I tend to do is select everything inside the black lines you sometimes get around your gif (this depends on what file you d*wnload), and also the tiniest bit inside the sides. This is because I’ve found if you crop it right up to the edge, you get a tiny bit of transparency on the sides of your gifs, which I’d rather avoid.
Once you have your desired selection, go to image > crop. Now, the dimensions for tumblr are 540px width, so all your gifs have to be that width. However, the length is up to you. I really like big gifs, so sometimes I even make a full square, or even longer. It’s entirely up to you, and what kind of set you want to make.
For the purposes of this gif, I will stick to what I usually go for, 540px by 350 px. This will mean you’ll have to crop some width off, but that’s okay, since Marisa isn’t central anyway. The cropping is always trial and error for me, as sometimes people move out of the frame within in the gif. The best thing to do is just try it, and then move the slider in the timeline window at the bottom to see if the person stays inside the gif, and if not, adjust accordingly.
Next, go to image > image size:
In this box, if I put the width as 540, the gif is a smaller height than I want, as it keeps to the dimensions of the gif when you load it into PS. That’s okay, just put the height you want instead, and we’ll crop off the excess.
Then click OK. Using the rectangular marquee tool again, we need to remove the excess width. Part of the reason I like this version of PS is that it tells you the width of your selection as you do it, but you can always use the ruler as a guide, and check the size of your image by going to image > image size again.
Again, use image > crop, and your gif should now be the correct size!
You can also use the crop tool in the timeline window to crop the length of your gif:
However, I tend to wait until later on to do this (which will be explained further down!)
SHARPENING
Next you want to go to filter > sharpen > smart sharpen.
These are my settings. However, 0.4px is very sharp, too much so, but that’s easily fixed.
Go to filter > blur > Gaussian blur and then set it to 1.0.
Now on the right-hand side, we need to reduce the blur, so double click the little adjustment button, and change the opacity of the blur. I usually go for 20-30%!
Then click OK, and that’s your sharpening done!
COLOURING
I picked this scene on purpose as it’s dark, so good for showing how to colour a gif. I have a base psd which consists of some very basic adjustments, but it mostly exists so I don’t forget what adjustment layers I like to use. I adjust them every time I make a gif, essentially colouring each gif from scratch.
In this case, the psd actually makes it darker. So, what I will do is turn each layer off, and adjust as I go. A lot of people say using lots of adjustment layers ruins the quality of your gif… I have never found this to be true, as long as you are gentle with them. If you whack the brightness right up to the top, it’s going to ruin your gif no matter if you use 1 adjustment layer or 100. I would just say use your common sense, and adjust a little at a time!
I start with a simple black to white gradient map set to soft light, because I think it helps you see depth once you add some brightness to it. I usually do this on about 10%, or more if needed. It’s probably unnecessary, I just like how it looks!
Then, I move onto using curves and levels. This is where things can diverge depending on who you’re colouring. If this person is white, it doesn’t matter too much. If they’re not white, you don’t want to white wash them. My best advice is to play around with it. By adding vibrance and other (usually the red) selective colour settings later, you can ensure you don’t change the person’s skin tone from what it originally was. You can also use layer masks at varying opacities (various shades of grey), on your curves and levels, to remove some brightening so that you’re not changing anyone’s skin colour. Just brighten slowly and check in with yourself honestly about how your gif looks.
Some people don’t like using levels, or curves. It’s completely up to you. I tend to use both because levels are good for bringing depth, even if not brightening (though I like to use them for that as well).
One thing you can do is use the white point of the gif to make PS adjust the curves itself, however I like to drag the sliders myself and see what it looks like. Just make sure it’s not too bright, as we will be using further layers to brighten more, after.
Next is levels. The slider on the left controls the black point, the one in the middle controls the midtones, and the one on the right controls the white points. The black brings depth, the midtones adjust the overall brightness, and the white points produce stronger highlights. Again, you’ll get a feel for how this works as you practice. Just don’t use the white point excessively, especially if your characters are not white.
Then I add vibrance (+20!), because we’ve removed a lot of it when lightening the gif. Next is exposure, which I find brings out the highlight and shadow areas more effectively:
Then colour balance! This helps with scenes that might be a certain colour, i.e. too blue, too green, too red, etc. Moving the sliders in the opposite direction of the colour your gif is will counteract it. The best thing to do when accounting for different colours, is to make a new layer every time you change colour, so that you don’t get confused. I always add a new layer for colour balance and selective colour if I want to change more than one thing. So one for red, one for yellow, one for pink, etc.
A layer of brightness just to make the gif pop, and because the scene is extra dark, I added a very gentle extra curves layer:
SAVING YOUR GIF
Time to save the gif. You can go ahead and file > export > save for web (legacy) now, but then you’ll have to reopen the gif to reset the frame rate from 0.07, to 0.05. Instead of doing that, I use a modified action. The original was made by the very talented @elenafisher! So I do not take credit for that at all. You can find the original here: elenafisher(.)tumblr(.)com/post/190817437374/gif-sharpening-action-2-preview-download and in my resources tag. Please reblog it if you’re going to use this!
To use an action, first make sure you have actions turned on in window > actions. To load in your action, go to the little lines circled, and then load the action from your downloads:
Obviously if you don’t want to sharpen your gifs yourself, you can use the action as it is, and it will give you a beautiful glowing effect. If you’d just like to use it to flatten your gif into frames like I do, make sure to take out all the items I have highlighted:
Until it looks like this!
Make sure you have the layer under the file name highlighted, and then click the play button at the bottom! (If you get a screen saying select all frames cannot be found, don’t worry, just click continue!) You can delete the layer that does that if you want, I just keep it in case I realise I’ve forgotten to do something, because you can click cancel and edit your gif before you flatten it. Of course you can undo the steps to get back to the smart object version of your gif, it just takes longer!
And now your gif is in frames and set to 0.05 already, so you don’t have to change the speed! All you need to do now before saving is change the gif cycle to “forever” in the bottom left-hand corner:
Then to save the gif go to file > export > save for web (legacy). Sometimes, the gif is bigger than the tumblr 10MB limit. You’ll be able to see this in the bottom left-hand corner of the gif save settings. If this is the case, I like to preview the gif, to see whether it would be best to cut frames off of the beginning or the end, or both. When you’ve decided, you can select the frames at the bottom, and in the right-hand side panel, and delete them both using the little bins/trash icons.
I keep checking and deleting frames until I get the gif under 10 MB! Just don’t delete frames from the middle, as then you’ll have the same issue as if you selected “every other frame” when making the gif: it won’t flow!
Lastly, these are my save settings:
So that’s it! That’s how I make all my gifs. Blending I do when the gifs are in the grouped, smart filter stage, whereas text I add on during the framing section above! Really hope this is helpful, please feel free to ask any questions you may have! 💖

♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎♡︎☠︎︎
“Master what is the meaning of this.” Shigaraki looked at the television screen as he scratched his neck. “I took her quirk and made it a thousand times better.” He said simply. “Tomura shigaraki where should I place her?” Kurogiri asked. “Anywhere. I don’t care. I just don’t understand why you brought a stupid hero here.” He said annoyed.
“Now now—“ “Shut up and put her somewhere out of my sight!” Tomura demanded and Kurogiri sighed and carried your body to the spare room by shigaraki’s private quarters. You looked dead, you were exhausted, traumatized, in shock.
You were frozen. Your eyes stayed open, unblinking as you stared at the ceiling. It looked as if you were dead. But your body is warm and you were breathing, you’re alive and you’ll recover quick. Thanks to the quirk All for One fixed for you.
Dabi smirked at your ruined form. Spinner hid his rosy cheeks, you were a cute one. Toga was excited to have another girl in the league she talked with Twice about all the fun things you two could do together. Whether it be painting your nails, doing your hair, torturing someone, or making them bleed. She was excited.
“What’s so good about her quirk that you needed it.” Shigaraki asked. “It’s come to my attention that the league has been missing an important puzzle piece.” He started off. “Yeah? What’s that?” The light blue haired man asked. He was beyond ticked off to have a hero here. “She’s not a hero. She was training under UA’s school nurse. But she fell into the hero course for recovery and first aid training.” He said and everyone stayed silent and patiently listened to the brain behind the league.
“Her quirk is pyrokinetic regeneration. She manipulates fire with the energy of the person who needs healing and together she heals with so called fire. Her quirk was small, only a few cuts a bruises here and there could she heal. But I added cell regeneration so she can even fix up deep wounds that could need surgery in a matter of days instead of months.”
“Sounds amazing! No she could use her fire against us!” Twice said and Toga nodded. “She won’t. Her fire doesn’t burn unless you’re hurt.” Kurogiri returned. “But she’s still a hero brat so wouldn’t she try to resist?” Dabi asked. “I don’t know but let me try and see!” Toga giggled and pulled out a knife she easily slit her wrist and skipped her way to your new room.
Out of curiosity the other members followed suit. Shigaraki first, he wanted to see if you were truly useful if not then he’d disintegrate you right here and now. “Hi hi new friend! My name is Toga!” The psychotic girl giggle as her blood dripped all over the floor. You looked up slowly from your spot on the bed. “H-hi...T-toga..” your voice was low. “Kurogiri Can you bring her some water?” Toga asked and he left and came back in the blink of an eye.
Your hands were shaking for the cup of water but Toga held it back, away from you. “If you want the water then heal my wrist first.” She said sweetly with a giggle. “Heal your wrist?” You whispered and she nodded. “O-okay..” you stuttered and you slowly removed the blanket from your lap. You stood up with wobbly legs to go to the girl but you fell. The chain on your ankle pulled you back. You winced and looked at her, pleading for her to come to you. She asked if you were okay and when you responded she shoved her bloody arm to your face. “Take a deep breath. This may sting...” you started and a small green flame came upon your hand. You rubbed the flame over both of your hands like you were putting on lotion, finally when the flames covered both hands you pressed hard on her wrist. She winced, “ow ow ow.” She whimpered, you removed your hands and everyone stared at the flame around her whole wrist. “Give it thirty seconds....or not...” you said as you stared wide eyed at her already healed cut. It was barley a touch and it’s gone now. “Wow. No scar!” She giggled and turned to show the guys. “Wow stab me next, please don’t or else I’ll bite ya!” Twice said and you reached for the water. “Interesting.” Shigaraki mumbled with a small squint. Kurogiri looked over and hoped he wouldn’t do anything bad to you.
“Shows over. She needs her rest.” Kurogiri said and everyone left one by one. Toga gave her a hug and wished for you both to be the best of friends and she skipped away. “Tomura Shigaraki. What are you thinking?” Kurogiri asked as Shigaraki began to walk into your room. “Nothing that concerns you.” He spat and slammed the door. Kurogiri sighed but returned to the bar nonetheless.
“Do you know who I am?” Shigaraki asked, “Yes you’re the leader of the league of villains, You’re name is Tomura Shigaraki and your quirk is decay—“ “that’s enough!” He raised his voice and looked at you with wide eyes.
You looked so sad and you glanced down at your cup. “Mr. shigaraki I know I don’t usually talk this much. I’ve always been the quiet type. I think whoever kidnapped me gave me a huge sense of knowledge. I know the league is bad but I don’t care about the heroes anymore and I don’t know why. I know everything about you guys, your true identity, your quirks, your past. And when I see you I—“ you quickly stopped yourself.
Shigaraki raised a brow. “You what?” He asked curiously. “N-nothing. Just forget it.” You answered and he growled. “Answer me now before I kill you.” He said and your legs subconsciously clenched together. You stayed quiet and your chest rose and fell a little more quickly. Why was this feeling in your chest when this killer, this man child looked at you? What exactly did the man he calls master do to you?
Before you knew it he gripped your chin and lifted it harshly so you could look at his wrinkly red eyes. Even though he looks like a bum he smelled nice and clean. A hand was covering his face and you slowly lifted your hand to touch it and his other hand grabbed your wrist. “What the fuck are you doing? Do you have a death wish you fucking idiot?” He growled and you gulped. “C-can i see your face?” You asked and he tilted his head confused.
“No. Answer my question-“ before you both knew it, as if your body had a mind of its own you tackled shigaraki down and you snatched the hand off his face. His hand quickly wrapped around your neck and arm and you pressed your lips against his. He halted his finger from pressing against your neck. He was beyond confused.
“If only tomura finished listening to what i had to say.” All for one chuckled loudly. You both were able to faintly hear the television from down the hall. “He would know that I managed to change y/N’s desires and whole way of thinking. She’s now with the league of Villains and she’s in love with its leader, Tomura Shigaraki. Consider it a present and motivation for the future of the league.” You both heard and you pulled away from him. “I’m sorry. I should have asked.” You said lowly. He stood there stunned and silent.
He slowly sat up and looked at your figure. “So you were brainwashed like my Nomu.” He hummed and took a few steps back. He noticed how you crawled closer to him but the chain was keeping you away.
“Who do you love?”
“You.”
“Who do you belong to?”
“You.”
“Who’s your master?”
“Tomura Shigaraki.”
You said and he smirked. He was gonna have fun with you. “At least master was kind enough to give me a beauty.” He said as he held on to the chains. “Don’t freak out.” He warned and you nodded. He disintegrated the chain around your ankle and he pulled you by the arm. You were wearing an ugly hospital gown and you were barefoot. You couldn’t help but shiver. He went next door to his room and he shoved you in and slammed the door. You nearly tripped over the mess and you turned to look at shiggy. “Why are you just standing there?” He asked, “You haven’t given me orders.” You deadpanned. “You can’t think for yourself?” He questioned. “No i can but I Don’t want to upset you.” You replied.
“Fine then clean this shit up.” He referred to his very very messy room. You nodded and began to lift up a piece of trash but he pulled you away. “Change first.” He said and handed you a black hoodie. “Do you have a bathroom?” You asked. “No change here.” He said and you nodded. You turned so your back was facing him and carefully began to take off the gown, leaving you completely bare and Shigaraki couldn’t help but look.
Your skin was so beautiful and looked so soft. He saw as you carefully put on his hoodie and it completely engulfed you. It reached to your mid thigh. You slowly turned to look at him with rosy cheeks. The hoodie smelled just like him. “Tomura—“ “It’s master to you.” He Interrupted and you nodded, subconsciously squeezing your thighs together once more. “Sorry...m-master.” You said and played with the hem of his hoodie.
“Master..can I have some underwear too...? I feel weird, when I’m bare underneath..” you asked. “No, continue cleaning my room.” He answered coldly and sat on his gaming chair. He turned on his console and began playing whatever game he had.
You sighed and you couldn’t help but admire his gorgeous yet scarred face and his beautiful long fingers. In an instant he can kill you, but if you’re good..then he might even reward you. If you were to die, I’d rather be in the hands of your master than anyone else.
You quickly began you pick up the instant ramen bowls and bags of chips. You separated recycling and trash. You even managed to pick up all his dirty clothes and put it in the hamper in less than an hour. Tomura was stunned, one minute he can barley walk in, the next It’s almost spotless. He saw you from the corner of his eye, you were folding his clothes that practically had the same color scheme.
“Can i go through your drawers to put your clothes away..?” You finally spoke up. “Yeah it’s whatever. I don’t care.” He mumbled and returned to the screen. “Ugh stupid game!” He huffed and began pressing the controller more furiously. You chuckled and thought that it was so cute and adorable when he was frustrated.
You went to his California king sized bed and began to fix the sheets and make his bed. Since it was so huge, you had to climb on to properly fix it. You were completely in your own world when Shigaraki turned and saw your wet cunt on display in all it’s glory. Ever since he saw you he couldn’t help but feel that urge to take you. His resistance was getting to him and now he wanted to give in to his urges even more. He was too distracted that he lost the fucking game and he growled and disintegrated the controller. That was his own form of rage quitting.
You heard his sound of frustration so when you turned you expected him to be in the same chair uttering bullshit, but you were shocked when you felt your hips being pulled back. Your cunt was touching his pants, but you can feel his bulge. “Um..master..I—“
“Shut up.” He said and reached for your neck. He pulled you back to him and wrapped his other arm around your waist, hovering your aching clit. “This is whats gonna happen.” He started off and you nodded. “I’m going to fuck you. And you’re going to like it. Okay?”
“I understand.” You said softly, you felt his hands slowly lift up the hoodie just a bit to get a better view of your ass. You couldn’t help but feel slightly embarrassed. “I know I’m probably not your dream girl but I promise to be a good girl, master..” your voice shook. He tilted his head, were you getting insecure?
“No pet, you’re perfect to me.” He assured and you could hear his belt jingle as he took it off. “You seem pretty wet already, pet. Since how long have you been like this?” He asked as he got out of his jeans. He slowly open your cheeks to reveal your little pussy clenching around nothing, how cute. “Since I saw you..” you mumbled. He smirked and leaned down. He immediately began to eat out your cunt causing you to gasp in shock and grip the sheets. Your chest layed roughly against the bed as your ass stood proud in the air for the leader of the league of villains to enjoy.
“Fuck—“ you moaned and you felt a slap on your ass. You slightly jumped released a small yelp. “Watch your language.” He growled from your pussy. “Yes master.” You whimpered and he slowly began to rub his thumb on your other hole. Your small moans filled the room and he easily slipped his middle finger in you. You squeezed around him so deliciously, he couldn’t help but wished his cock was inside.
This has never happened to him before, this feeling in his chest. Someone that loves him and will obey his every command. You’re so beautiful as well, and your sounds. Your moans and whimpers, in all honesty he jut wanted to get himself off. But after hearing you and seeing you. He wants to make sure you have pleasure as well.
He continued pumping his finger in and out of your slick walls and your voice started getting slightly higher. “Master...I—I’m gonna cum...”you panted and your toes began to curl. “It’s okay, cum for me, pet. You’ve been a good girl.” He said softly and he felt you clench around his finger. When you came he slowly removed his finger and examined it. You must be new to is if you could get off with just one of his long fingers.
You layed on the bed a bit tired, not paying attention to your master who had tasted your cum on his finger. It was delicious and he wanted another taste. When you felt a lick on your cunt again you immediately shivered and clenched your thighs. “Hold still I just wanna taste some cum.” Shigaraki huffed and he pulled your thighs apart. You were pretty sensitive but you obeyed nonetheless.
You moans began to fill the room once more and before you could finish and cum again he pulled away. You automatically whimpered and turned to give your master puppy dog eyes. “I would let you cum again, but my cock is so fucking hard I don’t think I can wait another minute.” he said and began to pull down his boxers.
Before you could get back in position, which freaking hurt, he flipped you over on your back and you made a small oof noise. You looked up to See shigaraki focused on his cock, he was rubbing himself up and down your slit to use your cum as lube. “Alright I’m going in.” He announced and slowly pushed his rather large member inside your tint cunt. You immediately yelped and held on to his biceps. “M-master wait—it hurts..” you pleaded and Tomura finally looked up at your face.
He loves inflicting pain, he loves watching people’s painful expressions when they’re hurt or when they’re gonna die. Chisaki’s face was so amusing. But when he saw yours, his heart shattered and he didn’t want to hurt you at all. You’ve been nothing but good to him, he doesn’t want to hurt his little toy. “I’m sorry.” He apologized, “it’s okay..” you sniffled. After a minute of him being patient you gave him a nod and he continued to slowly bottom out.
You both released a moan when he was all the way in. You both have never felt anything like this before. “Can I start moving?” Shigaraki asked you as he brushed way the hair from your face. You nodded and he pulled almost all the way out and he slammed back in. Your little gasps and moans came back which made shigaraki feel at ease. You can clearly hear your slick with every thrust and it was music to his ears.
“I’ve been neglecting these.” He grunted and lifted his hoodie over your chest. Finally he was able to see your beautiful soft breasts bouncing with each thrust. “Fuck you’re so beautiful.” He moaned and immediately lowered his mouth to one of your nipples. You squealed and your back arched and he pushed you down. “Master...” you moaned softly. His tongue swirled around your hardened bud and your fingers tangled in his light blue hair. Two of his fingers pinched your other nipple and he lightly bit the nipple in his mouth.
“I think I-I’m close—“ you gasped and he removed his mouth. His thrusts decreased in speed but they became harder. He had a stupid smirk on his face and your eyes widened when he wrapped his hand around your throat. “Hold it until I say so.” He demanded and you muttered a weak yes. He felt how your gummy walls squeezed against his large dick, he was getting close too. “Fuck Fuck Fuck.” He groaned with his head tilted back and your mouth watered at the sight. Why is he so fucking handsome?
He could feel himself getting closer to his climax so he rubbed his thumb on you clit while increasing his pace once more, causing you to be even louder than before. Everyone in the bar could hear and a certain fire villian grumbled in annoyance. “Master I can’t hold it anymore!” You screamed. “Then cum my stupid little pet. Cum all over my cock like a good girl.” He grunted and bit his lip at the sight of your sweaty body. Your bouncing breasts, crazy hair, your adorable ahego face, your twitching legs and finally your grip on his biceps. You were so prefect and so good to him and only him.
When you came you felt his cum shoot inside you as well causing you to gasp at the delicious feeling. Tomura rested his head on your shoulder and tried catching his breath. You couldn’t help but smile and blush at the closeness. You slowly wrapped your arms around him and you gave his shoulder a kiss causing him to freeze. “I love you master, thank you for making me feel good.” You said softly. He chuckled and pulled you closer, “I love you too.”
I wanna write a part 2 of Shiggy finding out his little toy is being used by a certain fire boy 👀

Every Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series to date has had its own distinct look and feel, from the sitcom-derived pastiche episodes of WandaVision all the way back to the grim-and-gritty, dimly lit street narratives of Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Marvel’s Loki has been one of the MCU’s more distinctive-looking series, though, from the dimly lit, industrial-brown corridors of Time Variance Authority HQ to the vivid neon city of Sharoo on the doomed moon Lamentis-1.
Series director Kate Herron confirms that some of these designs were directly inspired by classic science fiction, while others were more personal experimentation. We sat down with Loki’s cinematographer, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, to break down what went into designing some of the most striking and memorable sequences from the series’ first three episodes.
This interview has been edited for concision and clarity.
EPISODE 1: TIME THEATER INTERROGATIONS
Autumn Durald Arkapaw: Kate [Herron]’s sensibilities led me to get the job in the first place. We shared those sensibilities, around noir films and more moody thrillers, so we were already on the same page as far as lighting and tone. So when it came to the Time Theater, Kasra [Farahani], the production designer, did a fantastic job of creating a space that had a lot of opportunity to feel textural and moody, and create symmetry. I’m big on symmetry. I like to frame center-punched, keeping in mind the architecture of the room, and framing for the architecture and the people at the same time. Stanley Kubrick does that very well. A Clockwork Orange obviously came up in our discussions. Some of our main references were David Fincher’s Zodiac and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, and the original Blade Runner, in terms of creating spaces that feel strong and weighted, with the people in them placed in a way where the conversation feels very heavy, so you’re paying a lot of attention to the lines, and where your eyes are drawn.
We did some lighting changes above, in the Brutalist ceiling. The lights move, so when we’re cutting back and forth, you see the lights change on the actors. We’re trying to time those movements to the dialogue. The editing was fantastic with that scene. We shot a good amount of coverage, and [series stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Owen Wilson as Mobius] play in that space a lot. So we’re trying to always keep it interesting, every time they go back there, changing up the lighting and the projections. That’s probably one of my favorite spaces in the show.
And then the acting, obviously — they’re riffing off each other, and you’re in the room with them and feeling the energy. It was very exciting. That scene was up front in our schedule, so Owen and Tom were getting to know each other in general. We got to watch that happen before our eyes, and it was very comical.
One of the most noticable things about that space is the harsh, rectangular overhead spotlights — Tom Hiddleston starts his interrogation under a spotlight, and when he gets angry, he moves himself back under it. How did you discuss that kind of blocking and framing?
The thing with Tom is, he’s a genius. He’s just a fantastic actor, The amount of things I could say about how amazing he is on set, and character-wise, the list goes on and on. You can introduce marks and let actors know where you’d like them to be for a shot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where they’ll go. Some actors like to be more freeform. But with Tom, I wouldn’t have to say “Stand under that light.” He just knows, and he’ll play off that because of the space. He walks in, sees how it’s lit, knows our agenda, and uses that in the character.
So there were certain moments where he asked, “Is this what you’re thinking?” or we would have a discussion. But mostly, he uses the environment around him to tell the story as well, and he took in that lighting as part of the character. Actors know how they look in certain types of light. He’s very good at that. So he played with that in that space, for sure.
When we pull back and take in the whole room, the lighting feels punitive — the striped shadows are noir-movie standards, like light coming through blinds, but they also feel like prison bars. Is that something you discussed?
We never talked about prison bars, but in designing that space, Kasra was thinking about what that space was — being arrested, and being judged. It’s a claustrophobic space. Loki is slightly free to communicate and move around, but the walls and ceiling are concrete, there’s this fake light coming in, because obviously, in the TVA, there’s no day or night. You can see the light moving above, but there’s no sun there. It’s just moving at certain moments.
I had an idea, after seeing the latest Blade Runner, where Roger Deakins moves the lights around: Why don’t we have the lights move? It’s not easy to have big tungsten light sources above a ceiling set move like that, because it takes heavy motors. But my gaffer and key grip are amazing, and they figured out a way we could move the lights without causing shadows between each of the sections of lighting. It looks all like it’s moving at the same time. That took a lot of thought, getting those lights to move, and not just creating shafts of light that fade in and out. I think it helped a lot, because it’s very subtle. You’re only going to see it as they’re sitting. You’ll see sometimes the light moves from Owen’s shoulders into his eyes at the right moment, when you get lucky in the edit, and catch it at the right moment. It was great to have the resources to actually do stuff like that.
EPISODE 2: THE ROXXCART VARIANT PURSUIT
I’m a fan of green. If we’re designing a clinical environment, or a shopping mall, and we’ve got overhead fluorescents, I like to use cool white fluorescents that have kind of a green kick. I’m a big David Fincher fan, and there’s an undertone of green in his setups that I appreciate. So Roxxcart is a bigger shop that is now closed down, and Kasra outfitted it like a big-box Costco-type place? That wasn’t a full set — we went to this big warehouse, and he made it feel like that kind of store.
Above the space where we shot in, there were a bunch of fixtures. We completely removed those and put in our own tubes. They were RGB, and we could fade them and turn them off and on to our liking, flicker them, make them red when we wanted. When they’re cool white, I appreciate that green kick. I did a lookup-table color correction as well, to give it that tone. It’s meant to be clinical, but make you feel like you don’t know what’s at every turn. And we’re keeping lights on or off depending on which way we’re looking. Kate was a big fan of that space being very dark, with pockets of light. Our antagonist is supposed to come out of the darkness as people change identities.
We’re also trying to make that space look bigger than it actually was. We’re creating depth with light. That was a bitch to shoot — we had so much rigging. My team was amazing. If you go into a space like that, a Target or something, you’d think “The lighting here is not that big of a deal. It’s just overheads.” But being able to control all those overheads and make them different colors and flicker them takes a lot of rigging, with a dimmer board and the programming. In the editing afterward, it really does feel like a space that’s a lot bigger than it actually was. The red sequence is one of my favorites, for sure.
The camera is below waist level a lot in that sequence. What are you communicating there?
I always like to shoot low! It’s just how I see things. Some of my favorite films are detective thrillers from the past, Zodiac being one of those. I’ve always just loved shooting below the eyeline. Obviously there are moments in features I’ve shot where I want to be higher, because it’s more emotional or romantic or something. But in this kind of story, where you have these amazing spaces, and you have multiple characters you’re trying to frame, all facing off and being strong, I’m just a bigger fan of seeing a ceiling than a floor. It’s an appreciation I have, as far as it feeling more mysterious. When a character is looking more mysterious, and you’re not trusting them, you’re trying to figure them out, I love that kind of framing. It’s amazing.
EPISODE 3: FIGHTING TO REACH THE LAMENTIS-1 ARK
That sequence has a great backstory. I did a lot of prep with Kate. We started prep in Los Angeles before we ended up in Atlanta. We knew that sequence was coming up. but in the script, it just says “Okay, so they end up at Sharoo, and then go on.” The description of that sequence went through an evolution, with the filmmakers discussing things, building the set, and collaborating, so early on, we spitballed about what we thought that could be. Having the support of Marvel and being able to build, and being able to do great stunts, we went bigger.
With the sequence as it evolved, Children of Men was a big reference for us. Kate was really interested in that feeling. She wanted to be with the characters the whole way. We tried to figure out, should the camera be handheld? Should it be Steadicam? We ended up with Steadicam. We looked at some previous oners, because we wanted this sequence to feel like a oner to the audience. Obviously, there are cuts in there, but we seamed certain shots together so the audience wouldn’t feel as though we cut. The intention was to feel like you’re on the run with Loki and Sylvie, racing to the ark, building up tension. You’re there with them as they’re fighting.
My husband’s a DP, and he shot True Detective season 1. That oner in True Detective was something we looked at as well, because it’s just one of those great oners that feels real and has those kinds of textural elements. We did pre-viz, we did rehearsals in the space, prior to shooting there. We went there a couple times and did camera rehearsals. We had an amazing Steadicam operator who I’ve worked with on my last four projects and features. He’s very in tune with my eye, and he’s great with those kind of moves. Kasra understood that we needed certain paths to go down, to help us get from point A to point B, so it feels like a run, it doesn’t feel like people keep entering the same space. Obviously, it’s hard to build really big sets where you can go very far. So he did a great job of knowing what we needed, and then adding stunts, and figuring out how we could feel like we were turning corners whenever we’re moving into different spaces.
How big was the physical space? How much of what we’re seeing there is digital?
Shiroo was very different from Roxxcart. At Roxxcart, we had blue at the end of the aisles, so they look like they’re going on a lot longer than they are. But we traveled to that space. It wasn’t built. Shiroo was built on a backlot. That was a set we had full control over, to build to our liking. Above a certain point, as you’re looking up at the buildings, that’s VFX. But we built the actual buildings up to a certain height, and then beyond that is a digital extension. As far as the depth as well, beyond a certain part of the street, it’s a digital extension. Obviously, the ark is an extension, and we’re using the explosions as cues to do a lot of lighting cues. But it was a very big set, a gorgeous set. It has a lot of texture.
Kasra had the idea of painting a lot of the set in black-light paint, which I’d never seen before, and putting black lights everywhere. Also, we had a bunch of units on top that lit the set for the moon color and those sources, and we had VFX helping us stitch it all together. We had to shoot the sequences and look at the overlays on set to make sure we were creating matchups that would work in the final edit.
For me, that’s a very successful collaboration of in-camera elements — that whole set was real — and having explosions on set along with lighting cues, and then the effects to seam it together and do the extension above and the depth. So everyone really had to play like a good chunk of that. But they’d be effects overall, I think taking what we shot and making it feel like something that big, you know, the buildings are falling. Obviously, we didn’t drop buildings on people. There’s some foam stuff. That was really fun. We shot all that stuff at night.
The camera work in that sequence is some of the most dynamic movement in the series. What was the most difficult part about coordinating that sequence for you?
Rehashing it now, it was the prep. When we were actually there in the space with Tom and Sylvie, running through all of this stuff, it really made sense by that time. We’d been pre-vizing it and reworking it and massaging it for so long that ultimately, once we got on the set and had to follow them with the camera, and the energy was going, and we had the extras there, it all fell together. I think one day, we even wrapped a little early, because we’d just nailed it. When you’re prepping those types of shots, in your mind, you’re always like, “This is gonna be hard, it’s going to be difficult to seam these together, I like perfect headroom.” And you also want it to feel real, and people have to jump and fly and tumble into the frame. But on the day, our execution ended up being pretty good. So that was the most surprising thing to me, because it was kind of a pain in the ass prepping, because there are so many elements. And we’re doing six episodes, so we’re always working, trying to chase the next prep. But it really fell into place nicely.
