this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.
good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.
sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.
so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.
one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

I love a good work done in lore. This is important! Also super useful for ficcers and other artists. All should read this one.
Basic Guide to Clone Trooper Armour
I don’t know about you guys, but I have a hard time keeping the terms for various parts of clone armour straight in my mind. So, I decided to make this Guide To Armour, to make my life easier for those times I’m drawing or writing stuff and need to reference what this, that or the other piece is called, how it’s put on or taken off. (I’ve also tried to include/come up with some casual or slang terms for some parts because you cannot seriously expect these guys to use the Right Proper Terminology for everything all of the time.)
This is based on the Clone Wars cartoons, because that’s what I know best. Also, this is just the standard armour of regular troopers; if y’all want something about the possible additions/variations that you could have then lmk and I’ll see what I can put together I guess?
Note: a lot of this terminology is taken from medieval knights’ armour. Many terms are originally French; alternative names provided where possible. I did do a bit of research on medieval plate armour, which is the closest thing I can think of to clone armour, but I am by no means an expert so if you have any input or corrections feel free to @ me. Likewise, if you’ve cosplayed as a clone trooper or stormtrooper, I’d very much like to hear about your experience wearing this stuff, how it moves and how it might be similar or different to the “real thing” so to speak.
Tumblr media
Figure 1: Clone trooper armour, front view. Kix got chosen for this because he’s a vain little bastard and loves to be painted. (ETA: this diagram now comes with a second, funnier version.)
(long post under cut)

Quick reminder that you don't need a solid sexuality! You can just be in love! Or not be in love! Or have a gender! Labels are a choice, not a requirement. All you need to do is be someone you like being! If labels help with that, great! But they are not required. You don't owe it to anyone, so don't feel pressured to choose labels if they aren't your thing!

One of my all time biggest pet peeves with historical(ish) fantasy is when the writer constructs a religion with a clear bias that it's stupid and false and therefore only the Stupid People and/or commoners believe in it and all the smart/elite main characters are like, quasi-atheists or otherwise just routinely flout established religious conventions of orthodoxy and/or orthopraxy because they're Too Smart for it or etc.
It's usually an extension of assumptions that people in the past were just less intelligent than in the contemporary, just being like "I know that the sun is a star millions of miles away that the earth orbits, but this ancient religion describes it as a chariot flying through the sky" and not really bothering to learn the context and just (consciously or subconsciously) settling on 'that's a crazy thing to think and was probably believed in because they were Stupid'.
And that whole attitude pisses me off so much. People were as 'smart' 10,000 years ago as they are today. These beliefs aren't just desperate, random flailing to explain phenomena that could not directly be accounted for either, it's not like people just looked at the sun and went "Uhhh I don't know what the fuck that thing is, actually. I guess it might be a chariot or a boat or something?? Yeah let's go with that." and based entire religious practices on this. Every well-established belief system exists within broader contexts of cultural values/subjective perceptions of reality/knowledge systems/etc, and exist as part of a historical continuum of religious practices that came before. Even when not Materially Correct, they have context and internal logic, they're not always dead literal with zero levels of allegory, and they're never a result of stupidity.

you dislike Luke Castellan because he disagreed with an oppressive government system and actually took action to change the abusive ways him and his peers have been forced to follow for millennia.
I dislike Luke Castellan because in the Titans Curse he manipulated Annabeth, who he raised as his little sister, into holding up the sky, the FUCKING sky, for over 20 hours and had the audacity to walk away as though he was completely apathetic towards it while she begged and pleaded with him to help her.
we are not the same.

Biscuit you’ve done it again. My brain is rubbing its last cells together.
Like with Katsuki he waits until you’re snoozing to run off to the bathroom and fuck his fist. All night he’s been hiding behind your stupid pillows and plushies on your bed. Poor boy has been tortured just all night.
You tried a new game, one he recommends but isn’t your strong suit. And he was an idiot for recommending it because you’d been whining all night. Making little huffs over losing, moaning at a character you think is hot, and begging for his help.
Every single time, it drives him fucking crazy. It sends jolts to his cock and makes it chub in his sweats. One moment you’re getting your ass beat in a game and the next he’s got you spread out and on the edge.
So he does what any somewhat decent friend would do. He waits until you’re knocked out and snoring, drooling on one of your plushies with a comfort movie on. And he pads into your quaint bathroom, turns the water on low to cover the slick noises.. and fucks his fist.
His hand tightens around himself and he rubs a thumb over the dribbling head. He gnaws on the end of his t shirt he has pulled up, abs flexing, trying not to make noises. Precum slides down the shaft and he smacks his hips forward into his palm.
His thrusts get all needy and sloppy when he’s trying to finish up despite the guilt clawing at the back of his throat. But he’s sure you’d rather he do this here than wake up with a hard on against you. And when he finishes with a low whine, he keeps replaying you saying “oh you’re so good” over and over in his head.
But no, it wasn’t like his fantasies where you praise him when he fills you up. No, no. It was because you couldn’t beat a level and begged him for help.
May the gods have mercy on his poor soul. He thinks this every time he washes his hands off and pulls his pants up, walking back into your room to pretend it never happened.
something about one-sided pining always gets me, especially if it’s from the guy’s perspective.
imagine you saying “i need you” to him and his mind instantly wandering to much more sinful places.
maybe he’s had a crush on you for ages, one you don’t have a single clue about. as a result, he’s so desperate from all the hidden yearning, so down bad that in a blink of an eye, he’s thinking about you laying naked underneath him, imagining you squirming and panting while you stroke his cock because of a single sentence.
the fantasy grows more realistic in mere seconds, especially if you start to whine and call his name when he doesn’t answer at first. you let out this cute little sound of urgency and he can literally see himself rubbing his dick against your lower belly as he needily fucks your fist, leaving a shiny trail of transparent pre-cum there. can see the way your upper lip quivers as he presses the sensitive cockhead against your hole, making you both gasp at the slight intrusion. can see how you wiggle your hips, inviting him into the soft warmth that is your cunt.
“i need you, i need you, i need you.”
but alas, you’re just saying that because he’s your friend. you’re calling out his name, begging him because you want him to help you set up the newest sims 4 expansion pack or some stupid shit like that, not because you need him to fuck your brains out. of course you are.
so now he’s very uncomfortable and is sweating and has got to hide the raging boner in his pants, pressing it deep into his thigh with the help of his hand in his pocket while you get all excited over a fucking game update.
he feels like he’s going to explode by the time you hug him and press a hasty kiss to his much too-warm cheek.

I love how on Tumblr, "media literacy" has become "Um, just because someone writes about this doesn't mean they're endorsing this. I hate all these media puritans ruining everything."
I'm sad to inform you that knowing when and whether an author is endorsing something, implying something, saying something, is also part of media literacy. Knowing when they are doing this and when they're not is part of media literacy. Assuming that no author has ever endorsed a bad thing is how you fall for proper gander. It's not media literacy to always assume that nobody ever has agreed with the morally reprehensible ideas in their work.
Sometimes, authors are endorsing something, and you need to be aware when that happens, and you also need to be aware when you're doing it as an author. All media isn't horny dubcon fanfic where you and the author know it's problematic IRL but you get off to it in the privacy of your brain. Sometimes very smart people can convince you of something that'll hurt others in the real world. Sometimes very dumb people will romanticize something without realizing they're doing it and you'll be caught up in it without realizing that you are.
Being aware of this is also media literacy. Being aware of the narrative tools used to affect your thinking is media literacy. Deciding on your own whether you agree with an author or not is media literacy. Enjoying characters doing bad things and allowing authors to create flawed or cruel characters for the sake of a story is perfectly fine, but it is not the same as being media literate. Being smug about how you never think an author has bad intentions tells me you're edgy, not that you're media literate. You can't use one rule to apply to all media. That's not how media literacy works. Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Aheem heem. Anyway.
