if you'll allow me to flaunt my psych minor for a second, I'd like to talk about epigenetics. there's studies that show that if you shock a rat when you let them taste a certain flavor, they will immediately become averse to that flavor. not surprising. what is surprising is that the rat's grandchildren, who have never been shocked when given that flavor, will also be averse to it and afraid of it and avoid it. there's also correlational evidence to suggest that the descendants of people who suffered through famine are more likely to put on weight and keep it on easier, even if they have never been through a famine themself.

trauma gets passed down. the kinds of trauma your parents, grandparents, and so-on lived through is still living in you. even if your parents were the most well-off, loving, best parents in the world, their trauma is still in you.

my dad grew up being called "jew-boy." my mother had a coworker throw pennies at her at her job in the 2010s. and that's just two examples. they both grew up being harassed for being jewish. I wasn't. I'm incredibly lucky. the amount of antisemitism I've experienced in real life has been incredibly minimal. I didn't even hear anyone make an antisemitic joke in front of me until college.

and none of us were seriously persecuted. none of my grandparents were seriously persecuted. but even though nobody's broken my windows, nobody's beaten me in the streets, and I haven't been at any of those horrible protests in person, the fear is there. this deep seated, blood-pumping fear of the ancient jewish rabbit in me telling me to run. to run for dear life, to run as far as my legs can get me, as long as my heart keeps pumping and my lungs keep breathing.

we all feel this.

everyone feels this.

I called my mother yesterday. when I brought up this feeling she paused, and the silence said everything. she told me I wasn't alone. she feels it. my dad feels it. my brother feels it. my nana and grampa feel it. every jew you know, online, in real life, hell, even the famous ones, they feel it. the rabbit is inside us all, and the rabbit knows, because its brothers who didn't flee in the past were slaughtered.

Honestly actual play criticism is fucking wild, even when you get out of the crunchy angry Stop Having Fun dudebro criticisms, although I find those to be pretty toxic.

But like, on the "not toxic, just baffling" end of things, there's a gaming podcast I listen to that can be fun sometimes BUT also has the wildest "Well obviously Critical Role is scripted and planned out in advance because that's just good storytelling, no I haven't watched CR" takes that ignore how this show can sometimes have episodes that are SIX HOURS LONG, which. Look. I like Critical Role. But six hour long episodes is not really good storytelling and I think a major draw of it for me is that it's fairly crunchy but the players are charismatic and good at improv, unlike me who plays the face in my Shadowrun group and once froze up out of sudden social anxiety trying to play out a social roll I did extremely well on. I'm not tuning in for the brilliant narrative pacing of the shopping episodes, I'm there to watch Travis die inside while everyone else buys potions and annoys the NPCs.

One of the hosts also cited The Adventure Zone as an example of "the LAification of Actual Play," a thing he contrasted with his preferred approach, "the New York roleplaying podcast sensibility," because obviously New York and LA are the only two places in the United States and the McElroys have no regional influences outside of Los Fucking Angeles, not a single one.

(It is possible he actually addressed this later in the panel but I decided to skip that episode after the "TAZ has the same sensibility as CR and we're lumping it in with our imagined Los Angeles sensibility of actual play" statement because a. It was a recording of a live panel discussion and I don't like those very much anyway and b. I am a tired woman from Chicago trying to entertain myself while cooking dinner, and life is too short to listen to New Yorkers bitch about LA, The Only Other City, when talking about a type of performance that doesn't even require everyone to be in the same country.)

Occasionally I take a peak at DnD Podcast Criticism Subreddits out of morbid curiousity and by god you will find people out there who hate entertainers with every fiber of their being. If they're not playing exactly one-to-one with DnD rules and if they even ATTEMPT comedy or drama dudes online in these miserable little circles shake with rage. I totally think criticism towards a lot of DnD shows is fair, it's great to want the shows you listen to to improve, but good lord

It's so clear to me that so many so called "anti Zionists" - especially the non Palestinian goyim - have no idea how the Israeli election system works, and how bibi remains in power, and why we had five elections in like, three years, despite elections supposedly being every four years - because he couldn't keep a government stable enough to stay in power. Bibi netanyahu is MASSIVELY unpopular, and his approval rate has tanked even more since the war started, even among likud voters, the people who vote for HIS party (although their approval rates ranked less than the rest of the population). He has an extreme right wing government because if he didn't cooperate with right wing extremists and haredim he straight up wouldn't have the majority he needs to be our prime minister in the first place. He's been on trial for corruption for years at this point, and tried to completely restructure the judicial system just to avoid prison - leading to nearly a full year of protests until Oct 7. Luckily it didn't end up passing.

If elections were held at any point in the last five months since this war started, not only would he not be PM, we'd straight up have a center-left government. My recent transformation into a Yair Golan stan account is a joke but also 100% real - according to polls from the last three months or so, if he does what he's campaigning to do, leading a combined avoda and meretz party, he'd get enough votes to have an actual influential left wing party in the government for the first time in decades. An unbelievable amount of Israelis are calling for bibi to resign, many of them not calling for it to happen after the war ends, but right now.

I am sourcing this information from polls conducted by channels 11 (kan), 12, and 13, as well as by the Israeli democracy foundation, all but one of our important news channels - channel 14, the last channel, is our equivalent of fox news, and despite their numbers often being extremely different due to what is in my opinion biased reporting and flawed methodology, even they at times have had to admit that gantz is currently leading in the polls.

(Disclaimer that I work for a company that provides subtitles for channel 13, but i do not directly work for channel 13. Channel 13 leans mostly center left, and employs several (self identified) Arab Israelis in front of the camera, including Lucy Aharish, who makes considerable effort to bring Palestinian and Bedouin perspectives to her show. It also employs at least one massive racist though.)

I write this post because I keep seeing an unsourced claim by goyim that there's a poll showing a high rate of approval - 88%! - of the destruction and/or deaths Israel and the IDF are causing in Gaza. I went down a rabbit hole and simply couldn't find a poll asking about approval of deaths or destruction, although maybe I was looking up the wrong keywords? As a result I have just... So many questions. Because with the information I have from trustworthy local news sources, from the news channels I mentioned above and papers such as yediot aharonot/ynet and Haaretz, it doesn't fit with current public opinion, including many recent protests for more efforts towards a ceasefire. So my questions are thus -

Who conducted this poll? Was it a think tank, a government agency, a paper, a news channel? If so, which one? Are they left leaning, right leaning? Was it conducted by an Israeli or foreign institution?

Who did they ask? Was it a sample of likud voters; all Israeli adults; did they include only Jewish Israelis or also Arab citizens (approx. 1.5 million out of our 8 million population), Bedouins, and other minorities?

When was the poll conducted? Was it in October, immediately after the Oct 7 massacre, before the death toll in Gaza grew? Was it conducted more recently?

What, exactly, did they ask? Did they ask about destruction in general, or about the death toll in particular? Did they ask about the attempts to rescue hostages with military means, or all military actions? Did they ask about the number of Hamas operatives dead, about their estimated ratio of Hamas to civilians, about the total deaths?

What was the size of the pool surveyed? Was it conducted on a few dozen, a few hundred, or a few thousand people?

Because without this information, that one, sole statistic is essentially useless. As Mark Twain said, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Always look at the source and ask: who asked the questions, who got asked, and what the questions were.

I did find one survey by the Israel democracy foundation that asked if the IDF should take the Gazan suffering into account - an entirely different question, although it did still have a horrific 89% Jewish Israelis and 14% Arab Israelis and Palestinian citizens who said they shouldn't. That said, the pool they were drawing from was not very large - 500 of the interviews were conducted in Hebrew, 100 were conducted in Arabic. Also, of the people who supposedly said that they shouldn't, a little more than half of both populations said they should "somewhat" take it into account - that is, they didn't say they shouldn't take it into account at all, just not make it their first priority. This survey was conducted mid December.

In another survey by the same source with a slight larger sample size (a little over 600 Jewish Israelis and a little over 150 Arab Israelis), an insanely low 15% still wanted Bibi to be the PM, with the only candidate who received more than 6.5% being the center candidate Benny Gantz, who historically has tried to cooperate with center and left parties, with a whopping 23% of the votes. The survey included 10 candidates, as well as five other non candidate options. 4% voted "just not Bibi", and an actually insane 30.5% voted they were undecided. Only a quarter of those surveyed believed Bibi would manage to maintain a coalition after the war, a number that includes more extreme right wing voters, and only the ultra Orthodox haredi population had a majority of people (60%) who believed he can. This survey was conducted in January.

The channel 13 news survey from early March - barely over a week ago! - covered more specifically which parties would manage to get into the government and how many seats they would get, as under a certain amount of votes you simply do not get seats. Not all seats get into a coalition. According to their poll, the amount of seats the likud would get is halved, from 32 to 17, while gantz's the state camp would grow from 12 to 39. While currently meretz gets 4 seats and haavodah do not get enough votes to get a seat at the table so to speak, a combined haavodah and meretz under Yair Golan gets 9 mandates. In total, the right wing only get 47 mandates, well short of the amount of mandates necessary to create a government.

Channel 12's corresponding poll from January shows 35 mandates for gantz, and bibi had 18 mandates. Channel 11, in the same month, gave gantz 33 mandates and bibi 20.

I also sources an English Jerusalem post article which reports on channel 14's polls; jpost is a right wing biased paper, and yet even they report 36 mandates for gantz and 18 for bibi as of February.

I’ve seen people joke that Bruce would be on SNL and even play skits, but it makes me think, what about his kids? They’re just as famous as he is. Plus, there’s no way that they don’t have the humor that won’t get noticed by the media, they’d thrive on SNL.

Okay so someone shared this link on the server for the Chronicles of Darkness game I've been running since 2020 and I looked at the link and went 'yeah right' and then I read the article and went 'hunh' and then I watched the first three episodes of 'Knuckles,' which didn't take long because each episode is about half an hour long, and actually I fucking cried my eyes out at the big fight that is referenced because like... it's ... good, actually?

The show is very silly, and a lot of the humor is very childish, which makes a lot of sense, right, because it's about a fucking video game, but, at least so far, it's an extremely sincere show.

The siblings in this show act like highly exaggerated siblings. Of course adults wouldn't act like this, but it doesn't matter, because that's not really who the show is for. The show is for kids. It's goofy. The heart of sibling rivalry is there. The heart of hurting over a parent who abandoned you is there. The heart of a parent missing a family tradition is there.

The jokes that are made are made with love for Jewishness. Whoever made the food jokes has eaten a lot of gefilte fish and matzoh ball soup. Whoever wrote the episode understands how important it is that nothing puts out the Shabbat candles. Whoever wrote the episode understands the importance of minhagim -- the traditions that are unique to your family, to your synagogue, whatever.

Clearly they're not shomer Shabbos because their traditions include watching movies after Shabbat dinner, but that's not presented as them being Bad Jews -- it's just their family tradition, and that's just how it is.

Mom's bracha for the candles has the 'Adenoy' pronunciation which is so very New York Older Ashkenazi Jewish that it made my heart ache and made me powerfully homesick for the East Coast, since so many of the older people at my old shul used that specific pronunciation.

The fact that they literally centered a pair of Shabbas candles (with what are clearly kosher candles burning!!) in the fight, and the entire fight revolves around those candles? It just hit me right in the middle of the chest.

There's a difference between a show being silly and a show being insincere, and Knuckles is silly but it's not insincere. I will fully admit that I watched the first three episodes to get to the episode entitled The Shabbat Dinner, but you know... I might just finish the series? It's got heart, and all of the actors are clearly having such a good time. It's one of those projects that I refer to as a Summer Camp Show/Movie, where everybody's getting a nice paycheck and having a very good time and not taking themselves too seriously.

Plus, Christopher Lloyd made me laugh until I choked.

Frieren (the manga and anime) is nazi propaganda and I’m hoping you’ll spread awareness so people stop mindlessly praising such a reprehensible title.

All the main characters are very pale despite the in-show world being so vast - with the author only drawing characters with one complexion and not a single character with a hint of melanin or ethnic feature is in sight no matter where Frieren travels, which I think alone hints at the author’s white supremacist values.

The demons as they exist in the show are antisemitic caricatures as they are monsters who can mimik humans for more nefarious purposes - an antisemitic trope, see: Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Additionally, they’ve been at war with every other race in the world, are individualistic creatures and are greedy and conniving in nature (also an antisemitic trope) and even sympathising with them at all gets people killed as the show presents them as inherently evil creatures who can’t mix with other races.

The name ‘Himmel’ (Frieren’s love interest) is very similar to Himmler, a prominent nazi. Additionally, much of Frieren’s character revolves around her upset about not being his tradwife due to his untimely passing which puts a bad taste in my mouth alone.

It should also be pointed out that the female character designs are clearly lolibait and evoke the ‘1000 year old elf who looks very young’ trope. These sorts of designs are very popular amongst reactionaries - and this show does have its fair share of alt-right fans - who also view the demons as stand-ins for (primarily) Jewish and black people and regularly make disgusting jokes about it, which shows the sort of audience the author decided to cater to.

It’s the friend who always talks about how many Jews she knows, how many Jews she’s dated, how Jewish her high school was, who rolls her eyes and says of course she knows that Pesach means Passover…..and who used to call me a “Jewish American Princess” even though her family had money and mine didn’t.

It’s the friend-of-a-friend who posts a lot of disability advocacy that I’ve made an effort to learn from, and then posts this onion article with the punchline that Jewish women are “less desirable.”

It’s another friend-of-friend with a Jewish husband who says that “all” the mansions in her city are “owned by the JEWWWWS.” (Emphasis hers. That’s honestly the best way I can convey her tone.)

It’s my cousin’s husband who did an exaggerated “New York Jewish” accent in a shrill voice in an impression of his in-laws, who do not sound like that at all.

It’s the (very much ex) acquaintance whose post right after October 7 was this article calling the massacre a “breakout,” and then makes posts bragging about how many Jews they know and how much they love the Yiddish language.

It’s my friend’s partner (who I’ve vented about here before) who posts the most antisemitism stuff and vigorously defends Hamas, then reposts a picture of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew as a joke about how classrooms should hang it to circumvent the American right; the way they cheer for our murderers and use our Torah as their “gotcha.”

It’s the way, when leftist goyim brag about how many Jewish friends they have but make it a point to say that none of them support Israel, I’m old enough to remember that that’s just the current version of what I heard leftist goyim say twenty years ago - when they’d brag about how many Jewish friends they have but make a point to say that none of them are practicing Jews. The way “but you don’t support Israel, do you?” Is just the current version of, “but you don’t practice, do you?” Or, “so do you believe all of it?”

It’s the way goyim claim so much ownership over Jews and Judaism, and knowing Jews doesn’t make them more sensitive to how problematic and offensive and downright harmful and dangerous that is, it just gives them more tokens to show off.
