hi!!! i love for custom blog theme,, do you have a link to the code or creator 0:?

ya!

so my theme is actually a heavily modified version of redux edit #1 by lopezhummel (current url: holyaura). i always remind users that most tumblr themes are old and that you'll need to replace all instances of "http://" in the code with "https://" so tumblr will save the theme. i had to do it with this one

these are the modifications i made to the theme. i edited this theme over the course of at least a year or so and don't quite recall how i did all of these things. but to the best of my ability:

i moved the "left side img" to the right side of the screen. i also made this element "responsive" so the image will never get cropped when you resize your screen. this was a bitch and a half to figure out and i truthfully do not remember how i did it

i deleted the text in the drop-down navigation so it appears as a little line that is otherwise not noticeable. this type of theme, the "redux edit," used to be very popular because having a drop-down menu let you cram a bunch of links that lead to sub-pages on your blog. i've done away with my sub-pages, but i still like the format of the "redux style" tumblr theme, for its minimal UI and for its customization options.

i separated my mobile description from my web description for formatting reasons. basically, most elements in tumblr themes are connected to specific text fields and toggles. i simply went to the section that was connected to my blog description and deleted it. the web description has to be manually typed inside of the CSS/HTML editor when i want to change it. whereas my mobile description is whatever i type in the "description" box of the normal tumblr theme editors.

i added code someone else made ("NoPo" by drannex42 on GitHub) which allows you to hide posts with certain tags on them. i did this to hide my pinned post, as it looks bad on desktop.

i replaced the tiny pagination arrows at the bottom with images that literally say "next" and "back" because the arrows were far too small/illegible. i know they aren't centered in the container i'm not sure how to fix that lol

i added a cursor

i installed a working music box ("music player #3" by glenthemes), and then added music by uploading MP3 files to discord and then using the links of those files as the audio sources. iirc i also had to make this element responsive and i aligned it so it would sit on the left side of my screen. i made the "album art" for each one the same strawberry pixel art

the moth is just a PNG i added and then moved around so it was behind my sidebar using the options that came pre-packaged with the theme

if you want something like the strawberry shortcake decoration at the top (called "banner" in the theme) your best bet is to google "pixel divider"

theme didn't support favicon so i added that in so i could have a little heart

ALSO:

this theme is. really weird about backgrounds. any background that i have ever set for it, i've had to do weird shit in photoshop. like making the background HUGE, mirroring it, etc. - because it would crop the image weird, or there would be a gap where there was no image. idk man, it's haunted. i'm sure there's a way to fix this but i am NOT tech savvy enough. anyway, patterns are probably your best friend. and if you DO want something that isn't a pattern, it's going to take a lot of trial and error. but i love this theme so i deal with it 😭

the sidebar image and the floating image do not scale. if your image is 1000 pixels, it will display at 1000 pixels. you'll either have to edit the code so that the theme scales the image for you, or resize any images before you add them

my white whale of theme editing (aside from the Weird Background thing) is that i cannot get infinite scrolling to work. i have tried every code out there. all of them break my theme. it makes me sad because like. i have music there for a reason. the idea is that people would listen to it while they scroll. unfortunately, the way it's set up now, the music will stop every time someone clicks "next" or "back" 💀

anyway sorry for rambling but i hope you enjoy the the theme and customizing it in the way that you want to!

this is very much from nowhere but you've HAD skip beat! thoughts before and i am rereading parts of this nonsense and i am having thoughts. primarily, i think skip beat! would be improved by aging all the characters up like 10 years but keep key ages the same. e.g. kyoko meeting kuon whenthey were 6 and 10 respectively, her and sho going to tokyo at 16 etc. the introduction of vie ghoul rings a bit hollow when sho has only been famous 1 years, but if he's a properly established idol who is aging out of the circuit, you get complexity. the dark moon arc doesn't have the same punch since forbidden love and everything but that's easily adjusted for aged up characters. these thoughts are presented by the fact that i keep forgetting they are 16/17 and 20.

I HAVE ANSWERED THIS ASK THREE TIMES. SEVERAL HOURS OF EFFORT HAVE BEEN DELETED BY VARIOUS TECHNICAL FOIBLES. i used to highlight-all-copy long posts as I went for safety (this was imperfect) but the new block-based text editor doesn't allow it....

So short version of this answer now, you're probably better off this way without all my in-depth rambling textual analysis haaladksklask;dlk. Like, you're losing some fun content but hey third draft right. Condensed essence of idea.

So, I don't at all mind being spontaneously tagged in on something like this! :D But sadly, I must disagree. I don't think that would work.

First there are practical points, where I think you're underestimating how much the idol industry is a child-munching horror, and how having someone debut in her late 20s would be nonsense--that's Christmas cake, she's an old maid. Teenagers only. The basic career-arc expectations that give the plot its rough shape don't wash.

And then if Shou's career had been at this level for 10 years--he's been consistently chart-topping for months, inspired to new creative heights by his rivalry with Kyoko--he'd be the icon of a generation, and plagiarizing him would be a totally different ballgame. He'd have some measure of institutional power, instead of everyone expecting him to flame out any moment now anyway. (The Beagles could still run that con, the calculus would just look different.)

He is utterly disposable to his owners, right now; he's profitable but they haven't invested that much in him. He's already gotten further than anyone is expected to, especially without loads of nepotism. He's not aging out of performing at all, but people are in fact counting down to his expiration date as a wild success as a singer-songwriter, which is what Vie Ghoul threaten to bring upon him.

But more importantly in character terms, I think our leads absolutely have to be the ages they are--like, Ren was clearly only made 20 for Age Gap Reasons lol, but all his development since has leaned on it in such a way he'd become incoherent if he were more than like 2 years older, at this point.

When the personality under the persona starts to surface, a lot of him is still basically a precocious teenager, because he hasn't been living as a whole person since before the breakdown. But he has been living. The longer he'd been doing that, the more profound his alienation from Kuon would be, and that would change the arc.

He's only been Ren for about five years. He's left that kid behind but he's also only just stopped being a kid, really.

The difference between how you look back on and hate yourself at 15 when you're 20, versus when you're 30.......

And then, if Kyoko had lost twelve years to Shou, somehow not being discarded or figuring it out that whole time, and was now facing the world at 26 with nothing to her name but long-ingrained habits of service and self-abnegation and dozens of minimum-wage jobs from which she saved nothing because it all went to Shou, that would be much more bleak.

Do you know what it's like to be 26 and ruined, and to know you did this to yourself?

This jousei version is going to have a hard time not being about either 1) actual physical murder or 2) the grieving process for yourself as a preliminary to self-reinvention.

Kyoko absolutely does the latter in canon, but it works differently folded into a coming-of-age narrative. Bildungsroman for a woman in her late 20s whose formal education ended at age 14 getting out of an emotionally abusive relationship could be a really moving and meaningful work, but it couldn't be this story.

The thing is, this is a manga about trauma, especially childhood trauma, and its role in identity. Kyoko and Ren are both going through their arcs from the context of the very very weird and uneven development process that happens as a result of 'neglect' and 'parental fuckery' and 'bullying' and 'isolation' and 'child labor.'

They had very different experiences! Ren's parents adore him. But Shou's parents loved Kyoko too; it wasn't enough to make up for everything else.

Kyoko is super mature and hypercompetent in some areas and has huge developmental deficits in others. We are introduced to the traumas underlying this fairly quickly, for the most part, although detail kept unfolding for a very long time, and at the same time we watched her go through stages of self-recognition and acceptance, and start to heal. A huge part of this has been nurturing and honoring her inner child.

Ren, we come to see over time, has a lot of the same shit it's just subtler, and he has a much harder time unpicking it. Partly because of who he is as a person--a good liar for one thing--partly because Kyoko started off with a big burst of rage at an external target to launch herself forward and discard a lot of her repression habits in one go, while the main person Ren hates is himself.

(Remember their first conversation when he went off on her, totally breaking persona only we didn't know him yet to know it? I need to reread that again, it's been a while. But from what we know now it sure looks like he saw his younger self in her, and since he's fucked up this led to lashing out. Which was one of the most genuine human interactions he'd had in possibly years by then!)

Partly because he's older. Four years is not generally a whole lot when it's 26 to 30, but from 16 to 20 there's a big shift in plasticity of character, and he just spent his late adolescence cramming himself into a Tsuruga Ren mold only to realize there are limits to the efficacy of this coping mechanism and he's hitting them.

Due specifically to work, and the specific expectations of adulthood! Which, talk about realism wrt mental health struggles around age 20, oof.

Anyway yeah I think the age gap influences their relationships to their child-selves in ways that have been vital to their character developments and how they've influenced each other through them, which would make no sense if they were ten years older.

Would it be Less Problematic? I mean, yeah, but it also would lose the psychological realism that is, perhaps bizarrely, very present in this wildly stylized comedy workplace romance about acting and the processing of trauma.

Kyoko's characterization would be rife with insulting infantilization if she was approaching 30, but in fact she is A Teenager and this is exactly how she should be; it's a sign of health.

Honestly I just think a lot of the shit these characters do only makes sense because they are or recently were teenagers. The intensity of teenage emotions....like Kyouko's whole poltergeist phenomenon, that's classically adolescent for a reason. Shou being in the process of realizing that his shitheadery was like, actually bad; much more acceptable at 17 than 27.

They'd all be weirdly stunted individuals at ten years older, and just much weirder people than they already are. The whole cast can't be Takarada Rories there needs to be some variation lmao.

Before developing some of the slots, I'm quoting what @greypetrel wrote about the central statement, which is one of the reasons I asked for her opinion:

FanFiction is an actual literary genre as much as anything that gets written and read by other people. It's niche and it's for free, it doesn't mean it's inherently bad. "Fan Fiction" shouldn't be a synonym with "Poor writing and lack of originality"... Or no fanfiction would ever be published and sold millions of copies, am I right? ;) ("But some FF is pretty bad.". Yes, but so are published books. Publishing comes with editors and translators, authors are not alone and yet I could give you examples of published books that are just good to be used for decoupage.)

For me it was totally one of those "ooh, that makes sense" moments one has when reading something they never thought about. Both here and privately she put things in a way that makes absolutely sense and I wanted to highlight it ;; hope you don't mind having this reposted <3

I do have three unfinished projects. Unfortunately, one is like... To be fair, I'm still bitter about how I handled it, because it's that fic that "deserves more attention". Deserved it, actually, and I forced myself to remove it because the fact that it had few interactions and it wasn't well received even within my mutual's circle was giving me severe anxiety. I took it way too personally <<' Now, I must thank and praise @underneathestars here because if it wasn't for her support, I wouldn't even have posted the final chapters of the first part. That was an "I wrote it for fun, I wasn't having fun" type scenario, basically. I was in a bad headspace and now that I'm less demanding with myself I'm starting to having much more fun writing ;; it took me a while to figure out that I don't need to be perfect in something I like to do in order to enjoy it and now I'm legit having the time of my life with the one I'm posting :'D

Obscurest Fanfic Ever?

I did it, I wrote the first-ever fanfic for something! Wheeee, LOL. My fic is called Pistachio Passion, and it's for the new novel series (one book out so far) The Cross Brothers.

Some info for context should you read the fic (and have not read the book):

This is a fanfic for the Cross Brothers book series by C.J. York (which is very new, and actually only has the first book out, Legacies. It's a big chonker with over 400 pages, though!) The short, short version of who these characters are:

Garey:

Tall blond British fellow with glasses who loves to read and learned all he knows about the United States from watching way too much TV while living under house arrest for most of his life. Shared a body with Lubella when Lou first arrived, and they could communicate in each other's heads, Lou could take over control of Garey's body to go walk around, etc.

Garey is a huge foodie, catching up for lost time when he had to eat only what his house arrest situation (read: abusive family) served.

Lubella:

Thousands of years old terrifying inhuman creature (their true form involves horns, sharp teeth, tendrils of black smoke, a face like a skull, and glowing eyes.) Non-binary and goes by they/them. Terrifies demons on sight, which Lou eats when they get too hungry to resist. Lou is extremely powerful, but also has been asleep for a long time; they're learning about the modern world through Garey.

Lou gets their own body in the book, but they still have their powers, unlike here in my fic where they are limited to human abilities while human.

(I have drawn art of Lubella, which you can see here on my art blog. As you can see in the art post, I'm the editor of this novel, too. I'm fond of the characters!)

I don't even know why I'm linking the fic, it was ten years ago I'd like to think my writing has improved a lot since then so... maybe don't read it lol. I actually have another fic that says it was posted on the same date but I think that's because I moved them both over from livejournal at the same time, so whatever

last fic you published: Acts of Devotion for the Hockey/Mattdrai fandom. Much prouder of this fic haha, though I was still getting a feel for hockey and these guys during it's construction. It hopefully won't be my last mattdrai fic though. Got a few ideas and WIPs sitting in my drafts

a fic you wrote for a fandom/ship only once: I don't think I've ever written just one fic for a fandom. Though I certainly have many abandoned WIP's and a few unpublished fics from days gone by. Also due to a lack of ideas or energy, I often end up publishing nothing for a fandom, despite my love for it. But I'll go with the fandom I only published two fics for. After Life's Fitful Fever, He Sleeps Well for The Terror. It's actually a platonic ship (if that counts? Depends on your definition of 'ship' I suppose), but it's still one I'm quite fond of overall

favorite fic you wrote in the fandom/ship with the most works: well I already mentioned Supernatural, so that would be the obvious answer lol. But I already did that, so I'm going to go with a fic from the next biggest fandom I've published for. Which I would say is String Theory for Final Fantasy XV. The only FF game I've ever played, but I had a grand old time, made a lot of friends and had a lot of growth in that community

fic you wish more people read: Can I say any of my fics from the Dunkirk fandom? No? Boo. It's a tiny fandom so I don't expect a tonne of interaction haha. But it is the fandom I've written the most for. Ideas just kept on coming (probably because I love history and angst). So I'd say... Where You Were, Where You're Needed. My first for the fandom, and one I still love dearly

fic you agonized over the most: Skybound, for Dunkirk. It's the only novel-length fic I've written, and it took me two years. I also didn't publish it until it was completely finished, edited, re-drafted, and remodelled within an inch of it's life so... yeah that one. Plus all the history research and story planning that went into it was a lot more than I usually do. It was fun, I'm glad I finished it, but fuck I don't know how people write novels regularly. Stephen King tell me your secret

fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort: For The Glory, for the Hockey/Mattdrai fandom. Maybe the fastest I've written anything. Basically wrote it from start to finish within a couple hours, not including food and sleep. Not a monumental fic, no, but for someone with chronic fatigue and adhd... astounding. It was very much a result of conversations with M. and her determination to drag me into hockey and mattdrai. Successfully, clearly haha

work you are proud of: I'm going to say Skybound again. Small fandom, but a huge fic for me. One I could probably turn into an original piece with minimal finagling if I wanted. I would also like to think one could enjoy the fic without having seen Dunkirk. That being said, now that it's been over a year a half since I finished it, I'm already looking at it thinking 'I could have written this differently. I could have removed this or tweaked that.' Editor hell. But I'm leaving it as is, using it as a benchmark for my (hopefully) continued improvement as a writer. I think I improved over the course of writing it, even. A lot changed from inception to publication. But I'm no less proud of it, as a written work or as a story. I did what I wanted, and I wrote the exact story I wanted to read. So I'm happy :)

BUT ANYWAY

I'm gonna use my book-on-sub for today's game, so that's GroundskeeperWIP in my tags or The Many Buried Things of Peter Shaughnessy for an actual title as we yeet it at editors

it's about an old man cursed with immortality who hunts ghosts rather than making mortal friends who will die one day, but when the residents of a small ohio town adopt him as their own, he has to choose: leave to protect his heart, or stay to save their lives?

1) What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?

you have to be open to love (of all kinds/any kind) even though it means being open to getting hurt

2) What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?

this book is a love letter to northwest ohio. even though the specific town in which it takes place is made up, it takes inspiration from real small towns across northwest ohio, plus we get plenty of real northwest ohio bird and plant species, real northwest ohio history, and a reference to a real crocodile at a real zoo in northwest ohio

however there are also ghosts. they mostly don't take corporeal form, bc that takes more energy than most of them have. they're usually encountered other ways instead, but I don't remember where those specifics ways came from

3) What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?

the titular character is trying to find and banish a vengeful spirit before it wreaks havoc. hunting ghosts is how he gives life meaning, since he's cursed with immortality. it gives him a purpose.

he's also trying to avoid making mortal friends who will just die on him. he's had quite enough of that, thank you very much.

predictably, I am making him make mortal friends and fall in love lol

also I'm trying to once again internalize a character arc I have yet to undergo. so when you see me writing the same themes over and over and over again, that's why.

4. How many chapters is your story going to have?

the sub version has 55 chapters (which sounds like a lot, but this manuscript is actually shorter than Remarkable Retirement by almost 10,000 words)

5. Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?

original fiction, and godwilling it'll get picked up by a publisher

6. When and why did you start writing?

I started writing "seriously," by which I mean consistently and with a mind to improve, when I was about twelve. I don't really remember why, except that I come from a family of readers and my grandpa was a writer and also my favorite person on earth.

7. Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow?

I don't know half of you half as well as you should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve!

I used the new post editor last night to set up a post that needed it and with the latest @/changes it has become moderately more usable. By which I mean, opening an existing post in the editor it was made in is a HUGE step, because I will no longer fuck up my posts if I need to edit them later. So...

There's still quite some things that annoy the heck out of me:

The tag autocomplete turns hyphens into space, which makes every single one of my sorting tags unusable. (I could probably mass replace them but...)

It also fails to recommend me a lot of tags I often need.

Treating every paragraph as its own entity and not allowing me to select all is hell.

It sets the headline as defined post URL the moment you first save the draft, which leads to a lot of my posts being called /a because I save with a letter and an image first LOL

The old post editor did turn "" into “”. Not a big deal, I don't often write in the editor, but why would you remove that.

I seem to be unable to add a paragraph/text block between images, so if I decide I want to write something in between, its an exercise in reordering.

I seem to be unable to add image descriptions to my decorative lines, because they are too thin, and you have to hover over them to access the button, and the button is outside the image (:

It fucking baffles me how there are antis in the Rick and Morty fandom. Why tf are you even here?? Have you even seen the show??? It's not exactly a wholesome fucking watch. Rick is the farthest thing from a good person, and Morty ain't exactly a sweet angel boy, either. Rick has quite literally destroyed civilizations (including his own), and both these mfs have killed a shit ton of people and aliens (some who did shit all to deserve it), but you're mad that people irl ship them?? Just shut the fuck up.

Nobody in this show is what's considered a good person. Nobody. They either have toxic traits, or are just straight up toxic af. But that's the fucking point. This show isn't meant to be Steven fucking Universe, ffs. It's an Adult Swim cartoon that's about an old alcoholic asshole of a scientist and his horny naive 14 year old grandson who go on or get sucked into dangerous adventures every episode. So if you're gonna be that pressed about people shipping them, or literally any other characters together, then maybe you should stop watching the show entirely, since everything that's said and done is SO far from being the "uwu I love my family and feel nothing but wholesome love for them" good morals that you fantasize every show and movie catering to.

so lately this has been on my mind a lot because I've been going through the archives of editors that would post picspams/graphics/gifsets etc. that I'd be fond of and its soooo sad to see that creativity and talent like that doesn't exist anymore (please note: im not saying that edits these days are bad, they're just different from what i used to see on 2010-2014 tumblr days)

and i know no one asked but here are my top 4 theories as to why we no longer see those types of edits anymore:

a lot of those editors that were the OG creators of picspams/graphics/rainbow giftsets etc. left tumblr! i used to know a lot of those editors and recall them being in their late 20s/30s so perhaps they just grew out of it and have other things to tend to in their personal lives :)

the introduction of other social media apps and incentivites - now that there's instagram and tiktok...social media became more so about posting selfies and videos and getting compliments blah blah you know the whole ordeal BUT ALSO getting paid to create! people who make edits on tiktok literally get paid and same for instagrammers which is great but i found it so amazing that people would put so much effort into creating on tumblr circa 2010-2014 with no incentive other than showing their love for their fandom in a creative way

UGH! the like button is seriously the downfall of tumblr like the current like to blog ratio is INSANE how is this allowed???? tumblr is not like other social media platforms...pls im begging y'all to reblog. there's nothing quite like a reblog with someone adding hashtags like I LOVE seeing the unhinged stuff ppl tag when they reblog ok that's the beauty of the reblog button

the new tumblr size limit...so yeah i remember being frustrated with the gif size limit but now that there's an increased limit people keep making big gifs and calling it a day WHICH there is nothing wrong with that but that meant people no longer made colorful sets like this or this which i absolutely adored! and genuinely i think those big gifs are more suited for tumblr mobile than tumblr desktop tbh

Sebastian as the main character

Yeah, he’s officially the main character, according to Yana-san. I don’t recall any tweets specifically about that, but she did say so in one of the art books… was it Artworks 2? We also have to consider the fact she went to Editor K with “I want to write about a demon butler”, not “I want to write about an aristocratic boy”. In fact, it looks to me like she recycled an older character concept she’d originally meant for another story to become our “Ciel” Phantomhive; his name was Ao (which means “blue”), and he was some sort of young, aristocratic detective. I used to have an image of him, from her old blog, but I haven’t been able to find that image again these past few years.

Anyway, yes, this means Sebastian should go through some sort of character development. And, even though he’s centuries (or even millennia) old, among demons he might be considered “young”. So, I do often call this series the demon’s Bildungsroman — his coming-of-age story.

I’ve got some old posts about this, so you might check the tags of this post for more information. Probably find the most under #series end, #end of the series, #series ending, #end of the manga, and maybe something like #predictions, #emotions, #epilogue, #character development, #soul devouring, and #soul effect. Maybe even #devoured soul effect? Also please see the Tagging Masterpost for a link that’s about this topic. How and when the series might end.

But mostly, I expect for Sebastian to get the meal he’s been promised. Then, when he eats our earl’s soul, something will happen that he wasn’t expecting. Like a blossoming of emotions that he didn’t know he could feel — love, loss, shame, regret, a heavy burden — stuff like that. The sorts of emotions that make humans cry. He previously told Beast that he didn’t “yet” have a “jot” of understanding about such things as love or loss. Then there’s the scene in the witch arc, where Sebastian is crying, but it’s just from mustard gas, which he had never encountered before. He even says to himself he doesn’t have the ability to cry from emotions. I think he’s gained a little taste of these, but our earl’s soul is full of such emotions.

Demons might be the epitope of “you are what you eat”. Othello says that most demon contracts are over so quickly because the humans who make contracts usually have simple wishes that are easily granted. This suggests those humans themselves are somewhat simple. But he also says there have been notable exceptions, and I think our earl is one of them. Plus, Sebastian has accepted a contract he knows might take a while to fulfill, due to the terms placed upon it. He’s ok with that, since a human lifespan isn’t very long to him, and he thinks the wait will make the finished meal all the tastier. Yana-san calls him a “perverted gourmet” because he likes to “prepare” his meals in a way that alters the taste; he wants to put his Young Master through a lot of ordeals in order to “season his soul”. And his goal is to make this soul taste different than others he’s had before. I think he will succeed in that!

I expect the demon to be very satisfied with the meal, but then it changes him. He becomes more like our earl. He’s still a demon, but he has a better understanding of human emotions. From personal experience, not just as some outsider or observer. And I expect him to gain the ability to cry due to emotions. And he should act accordingly…. That’s also probably under #mother3 predictions. Oddly, due to Mother3 theory, I ultimately expect something “good” or constructive to come out of it all, even though it might require an extremely destructive event to get there….

(1/2) I know you said no discourse, but this is something that I feel hasn’t been discussed at all, so it might provide a new perspective? I am a late, late bloomer, meaning that I am almost 30 and I’ve never gone beyond 2nd base lol and I wish I had a dollar for every single freak that tried to force the asexual label on me.

(2/2) I haven’t explored my sexuality (my gay, GAY sexuality) like I want to because of debilitating trauma and mental illness, not because I don’t have a libido. Yet these idiots are constantly on the prowl to convert people like they’re Jehova’s Witnesses. It pisses me off. Ace discourse ruined useful discussions about sexuality.

Okay, I’m gonna be annoying for a second and make this about the anime I just watched.

Samurai Flamenco has a gay lead and a bisexual loe interest. Spoilers for a 5+ year old anime but it ends in a gay proposal but they never kiss or have sex and they are both explicitly virgins despite being 20 and 24 years old. The tag for this show is full of ace and aro headcanons for them. Because these men aren’t openly sexual and they need time to figure their own feelings out, they must be ace or demiromantic.

The main character is 20 and is just learning what love but that’s because he’s demiromantic, not because... he’s a kid? And kids take a while to learn what love is.

And this has happened with almost every canon LGBT character I have ever seen. There is an article, still up to this day, calling Chiron from Moonlight asexual and saying reception to this film GAYWASHED him. Not even a tumblr post but an actual published article, with a professional editors note as an apology for using the term gaywashing.

I’m bringing these things up because I think headcanons and commentary on gay characters is a fairly decent scope to view people’s real views of LGBT people. And the real view is: LGBT people are sex obsessed and promiscuous as default (even LGBT children and teens) and to deviate from that requires a modifying term. It needs to be clarified through the lens of asexuality or aromanticism.

While it is pretty common knowledge that lots of LGBT people are late bloomers—you spend more time figuring yourself out, there’s often more trauma or internalized stuff to work through, and it’s just... harder for find a partner if you’re the only gay person you know—there is an excess of “If you are older then your mid teens and still a virgin or haven’t dated yet, you must be ace/aro.”

Because LGBT people are horny to them and there’s no reason good enough for LGBT people to NOT be horny unless there’s a mitigating factor like asexuality. It’s almost like they want LGBT people to be ace or aro because it purifies our desire and makes us palatable. We are more relatable if we are sexless and loveless.

Instead of having robust and diverse personal journeys with sex and love, that often mean going sexless and loveless for long stretches of time (as many humans do!), we are given the options of “sex crazed and other” and “ace and just like me.”

I really do think eagerness to label people ace and aro often is just incompatible with open LGBT and even feminist discussions of sex, love, self love, trauma, and other complicated factors. The hostility towards sexual disorders (which do exist and aren’t aphobic), the immediate need to suggest internalized homophobia is asexuality, the fact that they’ll pay lip service to “Yeah, we’re okay with labels being fluid, lots of ace-labeled people might realize they aren’t ace” and then get mad at the suggestion that some people aren’t ace, they’re just on anti depressants... they’ve flattened how human sexuality works in a way that makes productive conversation impossible and it’s just downhill from there for LGBT people.

I’ll say again: I have no issue with asexuality and aromanticism as labels in theory or even offering them up to people struggling but in practice there are so many bad actors or just poor understandings of how sexuality works, especially when other factors are included, that I just side eye the entire affair. They can’t even handle LGBT people + sexuality, let alone how complicated things get when you include race, gender, class, and other identities into how you view and approach sex and attraction.

I just don’t trust like that at this point. We are better off reiterating, “It’s okay to never want sex or romance and to have those boundaries respected but it’s also okay to analyze why you don’t want those things. It’s okay for your attitude to change, too.” That trumps every piece of rhetoric aces have ever propagated.

NICKNAMES: so. my given name is lucy, which never really sat right with me, but especially not now i've admitted to myself i'm trans. but i'm also autistic, and change freaks me the fuck out lol. online everybody knows me as CASSIDY (actually my surname) but in meatspace, most folks now call me LU, which is androgynous enough to feel okay, i guess. i came out as non-binary a few years ago (which felt right at the time) and only very recently told select folx i'm actually transmasc. it's complicated, for me, in my head, bc i have kids. anyways, my mum has started calling me LUKE (unprompted, lmfao.) also, my brother—who's also my closest buddy—has always called me DAVID, for reasons known only to himself. maybe he's always known i'm a guy.

SOMETHING RANDOM: this isn't really about me but my brain is foggy so. my ex (but still good buddies) sister-in-law was in a drama/thriller with chlöe sevigny called hit and miss about a trans assassin, and played the wife of vincent regan who was in the movie the 300. this was back in 2012 and chlöe was playing the titular character... these days you'd hope that trans characters get to be played by a trans actors.
