"they're literally me" is a great way to connect to a fictional character but "they were literally me when i read/watched this for the first time but it's been a few years and i've outgrown them now" is maybe an even more precious connection to have to a character or piece of media. it's sad to lose the ability to connect to a certain character so completely but at the same time i've found it's very precious to have a place to put some of that strange fondness and sadness you feel for your younger self

A way to interpret the line 'This is not a love story' in Solitaire occurred to me.

Obviously, romance doesn't play any significant role in Solitaire. I don't know what Michael and Tori have going on, but it's likely not entirely romantic.

In reality though, Solitaire IS a love story if you think of it through Alice Oseman's way of storytelling. Platonic and familial love are shown to be just as important as romantic relationships throughout the Osemanverse, and they are actually more important as plot themes in many of Alice's works, including Solitaire.

Tori learns about the joy and the hardships of true friendship from Becky, Michael, and even Lucas. The struggles of feeling betrayed by close friends or trying to reconnect with childhood friends only to learn that it doesn't really work anymore, as well as the odd but incredible experience of an incredible person suddenly appearing. Friendship is a complicated and important part of life, and Tori discovers so much about it in Solitaire.

Tori also faces challenges with her family, between the conflict with her parents and her struggle to support Charlie. She has to be reminded that her family care for her and that she is able to reach out to them when she needs them.

Love is a crucial element in Solitaire, but the cover says (insists, really) that it is not a love story. I think this is Tori's internal voice saying this because, throughout the story, all the way to the climax, Tori believes that she isn't worthy of love.

Tori doesn't think she's important or special at all. She thinks that every bad thing that happens to her is deserved, and she doesn't understand why Charlie shows concern for her or why Michael wants to be her friend because she doesn't think anyone would love who she is.

'This is not a love story' could refer to more than romantic love, but also include any kind of love Tori thinks she is unworthy of.

they have the best sibling bond ever, and they can tell each other things!! like they just support each other and yes they probably have points where they’re not the best to each other because that’s guaranteed when you literally live in the same house, there’s gonna be times where they fight, but i imagine they would get over it pretty quickly and both genuinely apologize and probably hug it out or something. but they feel comfortable with each other!! and they care about each other!! they’ve probably spent hours in each other’s rooms just talking about random stuff or whatever’s happening in their lives and then they get sidetracked and somehow end up talking about some old project from art class or something.

Best friend Micheal ate up. My favourite thing about this quote is that Micheal is also mentally ill. He also hates himself. but the biggest difference between him and Tori, specifically talking about their mental health, is that, whilst Tori doesn't see a problem with sitting in her own self-hatred, Micheal understands that that isn't okay, for himself or the people around him.

Now don't get me wrong, he doesn't go about it in the most healthy way. Pushing down his negative emotions and pretending he's fine, rather than actually addressing them and working to make them better. But he understands, seemingly better than Tori, that he isn't okay. whereas Tori doesn't understand that yet.

Additionally, I see a lot of (presumably young) mentally ill people who seem content in their unhappiness, and seem like they would prefer to stay that way than even consider the idea of getting better. and I do understand it to an extent. My mental health is less than ideal we'll say, and I know that change is scary, and when you are in that head space it's hard to put the work in to get better. But what Micheal is saying is the wake-up call that Tori needs. She isn't okay, and she definitely isn't going to get better by doing nothing.

whats your favorite part of solitaire?

Omg thank you for the question I could talk about it for hours. If you meant part of the plot and not like element of the book I’m sorry.

My favorite part of the book is so hard to say but it has to be the characters and their development. They are just fleshed out and well written. Becky seems like a classic popular girl but no she’s actually a flawed complicated person with both really great sides and really bad sides. Lucas Ryan character is fascinating and also a roller coaster and a half. Tori thinks she doesn’t care about anything and is apathetic to the world but progressively realizing that’s a lie and finding the closest to happiness she has in a while. She’s so much more than your stereotypical depressed teenager. Her inner monologue is so amazing. AND MICHAEL!!! Michael is one of my favorite characters of all time he is so complex and interesting and unlike any other character I’ve read before and also just so relatable to me personally. He’s this eccentric weird guy who does weird things (like doing a one-man flashmob on the lunchtables) and just seems to live in his own little weird sunny bubble and is trying to make Tori less depressed. But no he’s angry at the world. He struggles in school. People think he’s weird and he doesn’t have any friends. He isn’t hanging out with Tori to “help her”, he needs a friend just as much as he can see she needs one. He can’t be normal person to save his life and just always come across to other as if he’s trying too hard. These characters and their relationships to each other are just something you can never stop analyzing once you’ve started.

But I also really the mystery!! I love books with really good mystery books and how Solitaire is built up and progressively goes from feeling like a silly school prank to something actually dangerous is so fascinating. And the writing!!! It’s all just so good.
