Hobie Brown wasn't actually a runway model; Key Term, "Briefly"
I keep seeing people saying Hobie Brown was a runway model because of this specific line-
(Sorry for the bad quality, I couldn't find a gif)
"I'm not a role model, I was briefly a runway model"
I know a lot of people say that he was a runway model as a joke, but some people are misinterpreting the line. He wasn't actually a runway model. He crashed a runway. Thus the line, "briefly".
Now, I'm not saying headcanoning him as a runway model is wrong, it doesn't really matter to me, but I just feel like that would be very OOC (out-of-character), and considering his values, he definitely wasn't canonically a runway model.
Modeling is a job in which every aspect of your life is controlled by an agency. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, your weight, your body, your hair, even your friends are determined by your modeling agent. Many models do not have access to free speech or free will and are under powerful contracts which limit their freedom heavily. Hobie Brown would not advocate for this at all. I don't believe the same Hobie Brown that protests against fascists and actively fights for freedom and loving yourself would want to be a runway model and have every aspect of his life controlled by a greedy agency. Not to say that he wouldn't absolutely kill it on a runway, but it would be very OOC for him to have been or currently be a runway model.
Activists often crash runways to publicize certain things, like animal rights or animal cruelty. Hobie was probably doing the same thing or something similar, since he is technically an activist, an activist for freedom of speech and basic human rights.
This is more of a rant than anything else, and I just really wanted to get this off my chest because I've seen a lot of people posting about him being a runway model. Headcanon him however you'd like, but if you want to be accurate, please try to do some research before-hand. The writers did an immaculate job at making him a very deep, well-thought out, well-written character, so try not to misinterpret him! 💜

Okay so I've been thinking about @nonbinarylocalcryptid Astyanax lived/daddy odysseus au. Which is some good shit in general. Yall should check it out. But specifically I'm think about what it would be like for this child to grow up on calypso's island. He would have been what ? 3-10 there??
#The odyssey#Odysseus#Astyanax#daddy odysseus au#@nonbinarylocalcryptid's au#Obvious this kid has nothing but trauma all day every day#It is the odyssey#And the whole adopted dad killed my whole family sacked my city thing#And his only role model is odysseus and various monsters#So I imagine he's a very bitter sassy child who hates the gods#But I also think it would be a very hard way to grow up#Watching your only contention to the world even if he did kill everyone else being dragged away from you every night#Finding him every morning sobbing on the beach#Idk man I'm just having a lot of feelings about Astyanax feeling bitter and helpless#And for years not knowing what was going on#Maybe calypso even used him in the early years made him apart of her schemes#And then having a realization of what's going on when he's around 9/10#I'm imagining he and odysseus had a convo about his orgins when he was 7/8#So basically everybody's having a bad time

I don't understand the idea that Victor has no backstory. Like- yeah, his backstory isn't as horrifically tragic and detailed as Eli's is, but we do know a good bit about him from what he's said so far.
His parents are pretty successful, so we can assume he grew up rich. Victor states that they write all of these books about family but have never taken time out of their day for him, even saying something along the lines of the last time they put aside time for him was his birth (not exact quotes, I don't have the energy to look back through the books rn), so we can assume that they were incredibly neglectful, most likely leaving him at home for days, weeks, maybe months at a time and probably not paying much attention to him even in times when they were home. Whether they paid someone to take care of him in that time or he had to learn to be self-sufficient is debatable.
I personally don't think they were physically abusive, and there doesn't seem to be any evidence at present that supports that idea. Verbal abuse is more likely, but I still don't think it was the case. It doesn't seem like they were around him long enough to do either. I don't think those things really need to be a part of his backstory to make it interesting or compelling. His parents were neglectful, and it shaped pretty much everything about who he is.
The biggest and most obvious one is Victor's obsession with attention. There are multiple references throughout the books of Victor craving attention from those around him, namely Angie and Eli. More than anything, Victor wants to be seen. He wants to be a part of something. He wants to be remembered and acknowledged and thought about. He craves the attention his parents never gave him. He doesn't want to be left behind or forgotten.
Being left behind is another big fear for him (I'm mostly speaking about Lockland here, as he becomes a bit less dependent after he becomes an EO, though there can still be an argument made about him latching onto Mitch and Sydney and Dol and Dominic in a kind of makeshift family he never had). He hates seeing Eli succeed because it feels like he's being left behind. He wants to be so intertwined with another person that they can't possibly forget him. He wants to form a connection so deep that it's impossible to sever. To Victor, there's a connection between 'success' and being left behind. He doesn't want to just be an expendable sidekick or an accessory. He wants to be an integral part of someone. Victor's life revolving around Eli is a symptom of his upbringing.
His social skills and general demeanor are also something that can be analyzed. From the beginning, he's set up as the antithesis to Eli, from social class to backstory to appearance to demeanor. They're the same at their core, but opposites in nearly everything else. Compared to Eli, Victor is a total recluse. He hates being around people, he avoids parties, and we barely see him interact with or pay attention to anyone except the people he genuinely cares about unless he absolutely needs to. His demeanor is off-putting, and he doesn't really make an effort to hide that, although he does just enough to make sure he isn't a complete social outcast. Victor grew up in one home with no siblings and parents who were hardly around. Compared to Eli, who was carted from home to home, meeting new people and learning how to blend in all the time, Victor likely doesn't have much in the way of social experience. He didn't have to hide who he was nearly as much as Eli did because there was no one there to see it anyway.
This being said, he is described as being a good liar and able to fool those around him, although notably worse at it than Eli. This one is more of a longshot, but I don't think it's improbable. Victor's parents were successful published authors who garnered their success based on the books they wrote about family. It's possible that Victor had to make press appearances at some point when he was younger, and learned how to lie for the cameras, or he just spent so long out of the company of others that he started seeing other people as more objects to use and less real living people, making it easier to learn the motions of manipulating them. Either way, Victor learns how to do or say the right thing to get someone to believe him, but he states that Eli is much better at actually faking emotions than he is. This is because while Eli spent his life following his father's death surrounded by people and thus learned how to change his entire self to appear more presentable to the general public, Victor only learned how to manipulate people through speech or actions. He can tell you exactly what you want to hear, but he can't put on a fake persona the way Eli can because he never needed to.
In conclusion, Victor does have a backstory, and it informs every aspect of his character, including his relationship to Eli.
#this isnt me defending victor this post got away from me a bit lmao#a not entirely serious mention of the idea that his skewed morality could also be a result of his upbringing#i mean#the man had no role models#and was pretty much raised on crime dramas#cmon#hopping off my soapbox now#i got tired near the end can you tell#Victor's backstory isnt explicitly outlines the way Eli's is but its There#i came up with most of this as i was typing#vicious ve schwab#vengeful ve schwab#victor vale#villains series#eli ever#eli cardale#vicious#vengeful

(Original Japanese on the left with translations under the break, Fan Translation in the middle, and Official Translation on the right.)
Saw some things flying around that have (unintentionally or otherwise) been giving people the wrong idea, so here are the comparisons to show that, yes, Miles was referring to Phoenix near the end of the second Miles Edgeworth Investigations game. Miles does bring up Gregory too, but Gregory being "that man" during the famous "shines brilliantly" scene was actually a change in the official English release that does not line up with the original Japanese version (even MTLs will get across the Wright meaning).
Also, "shining brilliantly in one's eyes" can be both how a son might look up to his father but also how a ruffly prosecutor might strongly/romantically see his courtroom partner; the line is simply intense enough to not easily carry the label of an "average" relationship. We don't need to elaborate when we tell family members/friends/significant others "I love you" (even if it's at the same time) for similar reasons, and I don't see anyone arguing that this means that Miles must see Phoenix like a father because he grouped them together in some form.
TL;DR: The official translation mucked up some context and stuff happened because of it. Keep shipping and feel free to use this as a reference post because the shippers did not misinterpret anything. We can have a conversation about how the change affected the moment, but the original context is still important and Phoenix was part of it.
Besides the translations, there are other points under the break as well, including a bonus of one of the nice and harmless additions the official translation changed/added with the "saved me from myself" line:
Translations (provided by a friend of mine who knows Japanese; edited at times to sound more natural in English or help get across the intended meaning)
........以前、 ある男が言っていました。
……..In the past, a certain man once said:
被告人の唯一の味方になって あげられるのが弁護士だと。
the only one willing to be the defendant's ally is their lawyer.
依頼人を信じることで、《真実》に近づいていく・・・・
By believing in the defendant, the truth draws closer....
その男の姿は、私の目にも まぶしく映りました。
The image of that man was so bright in my eyes, it was engraved into my mind.
There's a bit more added here for clarification's sake and people like me who have a habit of taking metaphors too literally; essentially, the first part that's in the game is saying that the sight of "that man" was so blinding that it stuck in Miles's mind/memory eternally, so the translation in the fan version is correct in a direct translation and what it means is closer to the official.
(fun fact that if you go for an MTL, a translator may translate what in English was "image"/"sight" as "appearance" or "figure" which is technically accurate but obviously not the intent when translated, just as "so bright"/"shining brilliantly" may become "dazzling"; doesn't mean I won't mention it for people to imagine/have fun with though :3c "That man's figure was so dazzling in my eyes." my god)
法廷で戦う父と、同じように・・・・
In the same way my father fighting in court does….
(without the clarification it's more like "In the same way my father fought in court...." but as above, message is clearer this way)
しかし、それはあくまで その男や父の生き方です。
However, that's just the way that man and my father lived their lives.
This is the big one since it makes a clear and blatantly obvious separation between "that man" and Gregory himself.
Here's another translation in a reblog of the post I linked, which follows even closer to the fan translation and is more straightforward.
My asks are open for any further translation clarifications people may want to make (don't want to bog down reblogs when edits can simply be made) but this was a long-winded way of saying that the fan translation was super on point with accuracy and the only thing of note is the "burning into memory" that the official one has to help get the point across (though I think more was definitely lost the way it was done).
Other Points
1 - Staying on the official translation, its use of "that man" is rather... bizarre, even if one hasn't seen the original. Such a use is typically for:
someone the game wants the audience for figure out on their own (so the character knows it but the player needs to go talk to the person themself once they figure it out)
someone who the character speaking isn't really familiar with (like, "oh yeah, that guy, I kind of remember now")
someone the game tries to keep secret a little longer for the sake of mystery (example being the fan translation where Ray refers to Gregory without a name drop for the build up that Ray worked for him)
Miles using the phrase and then saying "my father" in the very next sentence made me do a double take because I was totally caught off guard by how it was done.
The shot of Miles sepia toned in the courtroom (the fourth shot) doesn't even make sense anymore if he's only talking about Gregory since obviously he's never seen Gregory from across the courtroom while Miles has been behind the prosecutor's bench (nor do they do a camera slide as if Miles is only imagining himself across the courtroom from him; it flashes to white instead). It only makes sense if he's taking about Phoenix.
2 - Looking at it from a fan's perspective, it makes 150% sense why "that man" would immediately be associated with Phoenix in the context of the moment. Not only did the last case of the first game have that exact thing too ("In a situation like this… what would that man do…? What would he who can turn any desperate situation around do…?"), thus making it a near-perfect continuation of that, but "a defendant's only ally being their attorney" was a huge part of the original trilogy.
In fact, the official translation actually actively makes it weirder to leave Phoenix out of that bit because of the change "a friend to the friendless" it did, which catapulted me back so violently to Turnabout Sisters - the first serious case in the entire series - that it could've put me in a coma.
This is even disregarding how important the whole "trusting clients" and "finding the truth" stuff was in cases, especially 2-4.
It's like, "ah yes, Mr. Fender, that was yours and my father's life, not mine and also no one else's; honestly, not a single other important person in my life who I could have mentioned comes to mind" lol)
3 - From my own personal perspective, I'm not stirring up a fuss over shipping, it's not about that (though shippers getting thrown under the bus absolutely sucks). I'm far more baffled that it takes the already-not-around Phoenix and chucks his mention away for later.
4 - Anyone lamenting the loss of "shining brilliantly" for something else without the context has every right to be confused and should not be criticized for it. Shipper or otherwise, most wouldn't imagine for a second that the end of Miles's arc/self-reflection would have a significant change that takes 50% of the original meaning out.
This taken into account with my comment about the visual aid of Miles behind the prosecutor's bench in sepia during that very line furthers this. Obviously people will (still) think it's about Phoenix.
5 - I only linked to one of the comments/posts I saw in case I was accused of making things up. I don't actually recommend approaching/confronting anyone because I don't think it's worth the time/effort, so this is more for anyone who felt gaslit/like they'd gotten it wrong or wanted the actual evidence. I did check the blog of the person who I linked and they made a long answer to a person who was complaining about the people complaining about said post, but hadn't made an edit to their original post telling people that there were misinterpretations being made.
That's not actually me being aggressive in any way (it's their business and their blog), but pointing out that it's not something important to people like that. I'll also grant that some might simply not know enough about the fan translation/original meaning to get it, so don't stress about it is all I'll say. :)
6 - Here's the "saved me from myself" line as promised, congrats on listening to me babble and making it all the way down here~
#fandom silliness#narumitsu#wrightworth#the sight of that man still shines brilliantly in my eyes#I know I'm late to the party but I just got here and happened to see all this while scrolling#Combination nrmt post and me being confused as someone who has known the OG meaning forever#Gregory's already in a significant chunk of this game like obvs not many people are going to latch onto Gregory's mention at the end.#They'll focus on Phoenix. We already know Gregory has a huge impact on Miles's life and we don't get Miles's perspective in most games.#Gregory shines brilliantly in Miles's eyes like a son who looks up to his father as THE role model to be#and Phoenix 👀 SHINES BRILLIANTLY 👀 in Miles's eyes like [fill in blank with interpretation].#Even barebones interpretation that Miles sees both men as role models/people to aspire to be doesn't take away nrmt content#It alone shows that Phoenix is someone irreplaceable to Miles on a similar level to the man who was so crucial in his life.

There seems to be a lot of people excited for Hank Green on this season because of his tweet about how hot Brennan Lee Mulligan is. They want to see Hank being desperately attratced to Brennan Lee Mulligan. However, those people will be disappointed.
See, Hank made that tweet in June.
D20 seasons film many months in advance.
You will not see Hank desperately attracted to Brennan Lee Mulligan. You will see Hank DISCOVERING just how hot he thinks BLeeM is. Much more fun, if you ask me.
(Though remember these are two very real very much married adults please. This is all in good fun, don't RL-ship them!)

It’s interesting how Talia differs between Batman annual 25 and Lost Days, what with the two being published 4-5 years apart. If you pay attention you can see how Judd Winick went from having a general idea of using Talia to explain how Jason got his new moves + pairing them up to glorify Jason, to actually needing to flesh the story out and being forced to contend with the fact that Talia as she was wouldn’t have been into Jason like that. He could get away with making Talia kiss Jason in the annual because it was only one issue and who gives a shit about her, but in Lost Days she’s a main POV character. If Winick was going to keep his professional integrity as a writer at all, he had to pull some kind of excuse out of his ass to make that happen.
And yeah. Pull an excuse he did. Lost Days Talia doesn’t express any kind of sexual or romantic interest in Jason until the last issue, which took place after Death and the Maidens so now Winick could take advantage of the New And Improved CraZyy Talia to get them to bang. Woohoo I guess?
#I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Talia’s classic character model is that of a Bond girl#and Jason was set up to be an edgy mini James Bond during Lost Days#I guess this is my big problem with people who say Talia manipulated Jason#on a meta level she’s the one who got fucked over in order to make Jason look cooler#but im not mad at Jason#textually speaking Jason is still the one getting creeped on#I’m mad at Batman#like these characters existed for him and even now that they’ve left the roles they originally played for him they’re still like#trapped#idk if I’m explaining correctly#jason todd#talia al ghul#lost days#I like Winick he got me into Talia!!#but the man said himself he regrets making Jason and Talia sleep together#and I can see why!

"Ariel was stupid like she gave up her life in the ocean for a boy-" Well, if you actually watch the movie, before she even meets Eric, Arield shows interest in going to the surface and learning the ways of the humans. She collects artifacts and hides them, along with her trips to the surface from her father, who is prone to anger and hates her interest. He blows up her cave filled with said artifacts and bans her from ever going back to the surface (and seeing Eric, but the surface aspect and him go hand and hand). You want me to believe that you wouldn't book it at the first opportunity you got? Like yeah, the context of the deal was sketchy as hell, but when your dad is the literal ruler of all the seas you don't have many options. Also, in the sequel, Ariel is still connected to the ocean and can go back, especially after Ursula's sister dies so, in all honesty, my girl still wins in the end.
