not to bring back any bad memories for treble singers but (if penny was there in the choir) can you imagine ocean trying to get her, constance, and penny to sing this little babe by benjamin britten for a holiday mass. the fights that would break out would be unmatched

I put on Britten’s Ceremony of Carols to help me grade which turned out to be a mistake because I forgot about how hard it slaps. Now I’m just drinking hot chocolate and head banging to This Little Babe

No Personent Hodie/On This Day? Gaudete? I guess those are a little less well known.
My actual favorite is Benjamin Britten's "This Little Babe", because the name makes it sound like a lullaby, but it's about baby Jesus leading the war against hell.

May I congratulate you on your FANTASTIC taste in Christmas music, this little babe has been one of my absolute favourites since I heard it as a teenager and so few people know it 💛
Ahaha, thank you! I got to sing it during a Christmas Vespers concert in college, and I've loved it and the rest of the Ceremony of Carols ever since. (I'm a horrible snob about Christmas music, generally- if it's not in Latin or middle English, I'm giving it the side eye.)
That poll got me thinking about Christmas music in general, though, so thank you for reblogging it! Now I'm listening to the Trinity College Choir recording of the Ceremony of Carols on Spotify.

12 Days of Classical Christmas
Day Six: This Little Babe, by Benjamin Britten
youtube
This little babe, so few days old,
Is come to rifle Satan's fold;
All hell doth at his presence quake
Though he himself for cold do shake;
For in this weak unarmed wise
The gates of hell he will surprise.
With tears he fights and wins the field
His naked breast stands for a shield
His battering shot are babish cries
His arrows looks of weeping eyes
His martial ensigns Cold and Need
And feeble flesh his warrior's steed.
His camp is pitched in a stall
His bulwark but a broken wall;
The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes,
Of shepherds he his muster makes;
And thus as sure his foe to wound
The angels' trumps alarum sound.
My soul with Christ
Join thou in fight;
Stick to the tents
That he hath pight
Within his crib
Is surest ward;
This little Babe
Will be thy guard.
If thou wilt foil thy
Foes with joy, then
Flit not from this
Heavenly boy!

THIS IS SO ACCURATE AND SO FUNNY im also in treble but we work with satb choirs a lot and i can confirm that is Precisely how it goes
may i also add
mischa has NO IDEA how to read music and noel has to either play his part on the piano for him or put his soul into singing a bass part
penny is not a mean soprano and it makes everyone confused
noel insists on going on vocal rest and cutting sugar and dairy out of his diet (he never does these things)
ocean repeatedly claims to have perfect pitch (she does not)
ocean using the most VILE INSULTS against mischa for yell-singing
kind of niche but can you imagine the treble singers trying to sing this little babe by benjamin britten (with the 3 part round) and all of them messing up and HATING each other for the time where that song is performed
ocean is the kind of soprano to CONSTANTLY be on the piano and the choir director is like “ok time to start ocean go to ur place” and ocean gets pissed off but moves
(based off my besties hc) penny dressing up all nice for her first choir performance at the fair (like with the lacy undershirt) and being hornswaggled when she discovered that none of them even dressed fancy
Tumblr media
I like to think they had some sort of vague rivalry in the choir tbh ….. something they’d do
